(1) Background: This article aims to understand the forms and elements through which the inhabitants of the city of Medellin have configured their subjectivity in the context of the application of neoliberal policies in the last two decades. In this way, we can approach the frameworks of understanding that constitute a fundamental part of the individuation processes in which the incorporation of their subjectivities is evidenced in neoliberal contexts that, in the historical process, have been converging with authoritarian, antidemocratic and neoconservative elements. (2) Method: A qualitative approach with a hermeneutic-interpretative paradigm was used. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 41 inhabitants of Medellín who were politically identified with right-wing or center-right positions. Data analysis included thematic coding to identify patterns of thought and points of view. (3) Results: Participants associate success with individual effort and see state intervention as an obstacle to development. They reject redistributive policies, arguing that they generate dependency. In addition, they justify authoritarian models of government in the name of security and progress, from a moral superiority, which is related to a negative and stigmatizing perception of progressive sectors and a negative view of the social rule of law and public policies with social sense. (4) Conclusions: The naturalization of merit as a guiding principle, the perception of themselves as morally superior based on religious values that grant a subjective place of certainty and goodness; the criminalization of expressions of political leftism, mobilizations and redistributive reforms and support for policies that establish authoritarianism and perpetuate exclusion and structural inequalities, closes roads to a participatory democracy that enables social and economic transformations. Livestock, poultry, and fisheries play an important economic role in Pakistan’s animal industry. The pet industry is also emerging and contributing to the country’s economy and people’s emotional well-being. This review provides insight into the current challenges and future directions of the animal industry in Pakistan. Livestock, poultry, and fisheries provide an economically beneficial source of milk, meat, and eggs; however, they face challenges such as disease outbreaks, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, natural disasters, and a lack of proper policies. Likewise, humans benefit from companion animals that provide emotional attachment. Moreover, the pet food market has also shown potential growth, contributing to the country’s economy. Due to the close association between animals and humans, both are at risk for infectious disease transmission. Challenges such as the lack of strong animal welfare laws and the increasing number of stray dogs and cats threaten human safety and that of other animals. We highlight current problems and additional approaches to the management of livestock, poultry, fisheries, and pets, which need to be addressed to further advance the animal industry in Pakistan. We investigate the statistical entropy of black holes within the framework of the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) by employing effective metrics that incorporate leading-order and all-order quantum gravitational corrections. We construct three distinct effective metrics induced by the GUP, which are derived from the GUP-corrected temperature, entropy, and all-order GUP corrections, and analyze their impact on black hole entropy using ’t Hooft’s brick wall method. Our results show that, despite the differences in the effective metrics and the corresponding ultraviolet cutoffs, the statistical entropy consistently satisfies the Bekenstein–Hawking area law when expressed in terms of an invariant (coordinate-independent) distance near the horizon. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the GUP naturally regularizes the ultraviolet divergence in the density of states, eliminating the need for artificial cutoffs and yielding finite entropy even when counting quantum states only in the vicinity of the event horizon. These findings highlight the universality and robustness of the area law under GUP modifications and provide new insights into the interplay between quantum gravity effects and black hole thermodynamics. The Shenhu sea area is rich in unconsolidated hydrate reserves, but the formation mineral particles are small, the rock cementation is weak, and the coupling mechanism of hydrate phase change, fluid seepage, and formation deformation is complex, resulting in unclear productivity change law under depressurization exploitation. Therefore, a thermal–fluid–solid–chemical coupling model for natural gas hydrate depressurization exploitation in the Shenhu sea area was constructed to analyze the variation law of reservoir parameters and productivity. The results show that within 0–30 days, rapid near-well pressure drop (13.83→9.8 MPa, 36.37%) drives peak gas production (25,000 m3/d) via hydrate dissociation, with porosity (0.41→0.52) and permeability (75→100 mD) increasing. Within 30–60 days, slower pressure decline (9.8→8.6 MPa, 12.24%) and fines migration cause permeability fluctuations (120→90 mD), reducing gas production to 20,000 m3/d. Within 60–120 days, pressure stabilizes (~7.6 MPa) with residual hydrate saturation < 0.1, leading to stable low permeability (60 mD) and gas production (15,000 m3/d), with cumulative production reaching 2.2 × 106 m3. This study clarifies that productivity is governed by coupled “pressure-driven dissociation–heat limitation–fines migration” mechanisms, providing key insights for optimizing depressurization strategies (e.g., timed heat supplementation, anti-clogging measures) to enhance commercial viability of unconsolidated hydrate reservoirs. This paper contends that the West’s civic crisis is, at root, a cosmological crisis: civic renewal requires metaphysical repair. It is insufficient to endorse virtue ethics and demand civic virtues without a deeper account of reality that can sustain them. What is needed is a cosmology—one informed by contemporary science—in which nature, personhood, and political community are meaningfully situated within an ordered whole. Drawing on the Platonic isomorphism between soul, city, and cosmos, I outline a hylomorphic framework with the potential to integrate key elements of neo-Aristotelian, Stoic, and Thomist metaphysics with developments in contemporary physics. Against the dominant atomistic and holistic paradigms, I argue that hylomorphism offers a more adequate account of personhood, the polis, and the cosmos itself as an intelligible whole. Full article

Increasing wildfires are causing global concerns about ecosystem functioning and services. Although some wildfires are caused by natural ignitions, it is also important to understand how human ignitions and human-related factors can contribute to wildfires. While dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) have incorporated fire-related modules to simulate wildfires and their impacts, few models have fully considered various human-related factors causing human ignitions. Using global examples, this study aims to identify key factors associated with human impacts on wildfires and provides suggestions for enhancing model simulations. The main categories explored in this paper are human behavior and activities, socioeconomic background, policy, laws, regulations, and cultural and traditional activities, all of which can influence wildfires. Employing an integrated and interdisciplinary assessment approach, this study evaluates existing DGVMs and provides suggestions for their improvement. Full article

This paper offers a Christian ethical evaluation of transhumanism. It employs a two-part framework. First, the paper contextualizes transhumanism within the evolutionary cosmology of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and thereby suggests a theological openness to technologically influenced development as part of an ongoing cosmogenesis towards greater consciousness, or the Omega Point. Second, the paper critically evaluates transhumanist values against five key principles of Catholic Social Teaching (CST): natural law, human dignity, human flourishing, the common good, and care for creation. While the Teilhardian lens does indeed allow us to interpret certain transhumanist goals as potentially conducive to humans, the CST assessment reveals serious ethical concerns that must be addressed. These concerns include threats to inherent dignity through the reductionism of the human person, the potential unchecked exacerbation of current social inequality, and significant conflicts with the care of creation stemming from an unchecked technocratic paradigm as described in Laudato Si’. This paper concludes that while engagement with transhumanism is necessary, a Christian perspective should strive to ensure that technological advancement remains subordinate to the universal dignity of all persons, the common good, and authentic flourishing in communion with God. Natural Ventilation Technique of uNVeF in Urban Residential Unit Through a Case Study

The present study was motivated by the need to enhance indoor air quality and reduce airborne disease transmission in dense urban environments where high-rise residential buildings face challenges in achieving effective natural ventilation. The problem lies in the lack of scalable and convenient tools to optimize natural ventilation rate, particularly in urban settings with varying building heights. To address this, the scientific technique developed with an innovative metric, the urbanized natural ventilation effectiveness factor (uNVeF), integrates regression analysis of wind direction, velocity, air change rate per hour (ACH), window configurations, and building height to quantify ventilation efficiency. By employing a field measurement methodology, the measurements were conducted across 25 window-opening scenarios in a 13.9 m2 residential unit on the 35/F of a Hong Kong public housing building, supplemented by the Hellman Exponential Law with a site-specific friction coefficient (0.2907, R2 = 0.9232) to estimate the lower floor natural ventilation rate. The results confirm compliance with Hong Kong’s statutory 1.5 ACH requirement (Practice Note for Authorized Persons, Registered Structural Engineers, and Registered Geotechnical Engineers) and achieving a peak ACH at a uNVeF of 0.953 with 75% window opening. The results also revealed that lower floors can maintain 1.5 ACH with adjusted window configurations. Using the Wells–Riley model, the estimation results indicated significant airborne disease infection risk reductions of 96.1% at 35/F and 93.4% at 1/F compared to the 1.5 ACH baseline which demonstrates a strong correlation between ACH, uNVeF and infection risks. The uNVeF framework offers a practical approach to optimize natural ventilation and provides actionable guidelines, together with future research on the scope of validity to refine this technique for residents and developers. The implications in the building industry include setting up sustainable design standards, enhancing public health resilience, supporting policy frameworks for energy-efficient urban planning, and potentially driving innovation in high-rise residential construction and retrofitting globally. Grasping objects with a high degree of anthropomorphism is a critical component in the field of highly anthropomorphic robotic grasping. However, the accuracy of contact maps and the irrationality of the grasping gesture become challenges for grasp generation. In this paper, we propose a reasonably improved generation scheme, called Diffangle-Grasp, consisting of two parts: contact map generation based on a conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE), sharing the potential space with the diffusion model, and optimized grasping generation, conforming to the physical laws and the natural pose. The experimental findings demonstrate that the proposed method effectively reduces the loss in contact map reconstruction by 9.59% in comparison with the base model. Additionally, it enhances the naturalness by 2.15%, elevates the success rate of grasping by 3.27%, reduces the penetration volume by 11.06%, and maintains the grasping simulation displacement. The comprehensive comparison and qualitative analysis with mainstream schemes also corroborate the rationality of the improvement. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive account of our contributions to enhancing the accuracy of contact maps and the naturalness of grasping gestures. We also offer a detailed technical feasibility analysis for robotic human grasping. Full article

In 2022, the Russia–Ukraine conflict has severely impacted the EU’s energy supply chain, and the EU’s natural gas import pattern has begun to reconstruct, and exploring the spatiotemporal differentiation of EU natural gas trade and its driving factors is the basis for improving the resilience of its supply chain and ensuring the stable supply of energy resources. This paper summarizes the law of the change of its import volume by using the complex network method, constructs a multi-dimensional index system such as demand, economy, and security, and uses the geographic detector model to mine the driving factors affecting the spatiotemporal evolution of natural gas imports in EU countries and propose different sustainable development paths. The results show that from 2000 to 2023, Europe’s natural gas imports generally show an upward trend, and the import structure has undergone great changes, from pipeline gas dominance to LNG diversification. After the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the number of import source countries has increased, the market network has become looser, France has become the core hub of the EU natural gas market, the importance of Russia has declined rapidly, and the status of countries in the United States, North Africa, and the Middle East has increased rapidly; natural gas consumption is the leading factor in the spatiotemporal differentiation of EU natural gas imports, and the influence of import distance and geopolitical risk is gradually expanding, and the proportion of energy consumption is significantly higher than that of other factors in the interaction with other factors. Combined with the driving factors, three different evolutionary directions of natural gas imports in EU countries are identified, and energy security paths such as improving supply chain control capabilities, ensuring export stability, and using location advantages to become hub nodes are proposed for different development trends. Certain industries will bear a disproportionate share of the burden of climate change. Climate change risk perceptions can impact workers’ mental health and well-being; increased climate change risk perceptions are also associated with more favourable adaptive attitudes. It is, therefore, important to understand whether climate risk perceptions differ across workers between industries. We conducted an online survey of British Columbians (16+) in 2021 using social media advertisements. Participants rated how likely they believed their industry (Natural Resources, Science, Art and Recreation, Education/Law/Government, Health, Management/Business, Manufacturing, Sales, Trades) would be affected by climate change (on a scale from “Very Unlikely” to “Very Likely”). Ordinal logistic regression examined the association between occupational category and perceived industry vulnerability, adjusting for socio-demographic factors. Among 877 participants, 66.1% of Natural Resources workers perceived it was very/somewhat likely that climate change would impact their industry; only those in Science (78.3%) and Art and Recreation (71.4%) occupations had higher percentages. In the adjusted model, compared to Natural Resources workers, respondents in other occupations, including those in Art and Recreation, Education/Law/Government, Management/Business, Manufacturing, Sales, and Trades, perceived significantly lower risk of climate change-related industry impacts. Industry-specific interventions are needed to increase awareness of and readiness for climate adaptation. Policymakers and industry leaders should prioritize sectoral differences when designing interventions to support climate resilience in the workforce. Full article

This paper addresses the critical gap in the existing literature regarding the combined buoyancy–Marangoni convection of power-law fluids in three-dimensional porous media with complex evaporation surfaces. Previous studies have rarely investigated the convective heat transfer mechanisms in such systems, and there is a lack of effective methods to accurately track fractal evaporation surfaces, which are ubiquitous in natural and engineering porous media (e.g., geological formations, industrial heat exchangers). This research is significant because understanding heat transfer in these complex porous media is essential for optimizing energy systems, enhancing thermal management in industrial processes, and improving the efficiency of phase-change-based technologies. For this scientific issue, a general model is designed. There is a significant temperature difference on the left and right sides of the model, which drives the internal fluid movement through the temperature difference. The upper end of the model is designed as a complex evaporation surface, and there is flowing steam above it, thus forming a coupled flow field. The VOF fractal reconstruction method is adopted to approximate the shape of the complex evaporation surface, which is a major highlight of this study. Different from previous research, this method can more accurately reflect the flow and phase change on the upper surface of the porous medium. Through numerical simulation, the influence of the evaporation coefficient on the flow and heat transfer rate can be determined. Key findings from numerical simulations reveal the following: (1) Heat transfer rates decrease with increasing fractal dimension (surface complexity) and evaporation coefficient; (2) As the thermal Rayleigh number increases, the influence of the Marangoni number on heat transfer diminishes; (3) The coupling of buoyancy and Marangoni effects in porous media with complex evaporation surfaces significantly alters flow and heat transfer patterns compared to smooth-surfaced porous media. This study provides a robust numerical framework for analyzing non-Newtonian fluid convection in complex porous media, offering insights into optimizing thermal systems involving phase changes and irregular surfaces. The findings contribute to advancing heat transfer theory and have practical implications for industries such as energy storage, chemical engineering, and environmental remediation. Full article

Mid-infrared passive spectroscopic imaging is a novel non-invasive and remote sensing method based on Planck’s law. It enables the acquisition of component-specific information from the human body by measuring naturally emitted thermal radiation in the mid-infrared region. Unlike active methods that require an external light source, our passive approach harnesses the body’s own emission, thereby enabling safe, long-term monitoring. In this study, we successfully demonstrated the simultaneous, non-invasive measurements of blood glucose and lactate levels of the human body using this method. The measurements, conducted over approximately 80 min, provided emittance data derived from mid-infrared passive spectroscopy that showed a temporal correlation with values obtained using conventional blood collection sensors. Furthermore, to evaluate localized metabolic changes, we performed k-means clustering analysis of the spectral data obtained from the upper arm. This enabled visualization of time-dependent lactate responses with spatial resolution. These results demonstrate the feasibility of multi-component monitoring without physical contact or biological sampling. The proposed technique holds promise for translation to medical diagnostics, continuous health monitoring, and sports medicine, in addition to facilitating the development of next-generation healthcare technologies. In the anti-immigrant national context of the first Trump administration, what motivated Latine immigrants in Texas to pursue naturalization? Based on 31 Spanish and English semi-structured interviews conducted during 2017–2019, we examine how lawful permanent residents’ (LPRs’) perceptions of contemporary immigration policy and their social rights affect their motivations to naturalize. Surprisingly, we find that although fear of deportation was an extremely common motivation, it was rarely the residents’ primary motivation. When asked why they wanted to naturalize, our respondents expressed four primary motivations grounded in their claims for social rights: proactive (gain the right to vote, benefit the group), pragmatic (expedite family reunification, access better jobs, benefit the individual), defensive (protect against deportation), and emotional (formalize a sense of belonging). Although 60 percent of interview subjects mentioned some defensive motivations, citing the current national and state political climate as hostile to immigrants, it was the least common primary motivation for naturalization; that is, they named another motivation first as their most important reason for naturalizing. The need to naturalize to protect their social rights in a shifting political context is a strong subtext to subjects’ narratives about why they choose to become citizens. Defensive motivations undergird all other motivations, but the national hostile climate is moderated by relatively positive local interactions with law enforcement and the larger community. Large language models (LLMs), as one of the most advanced achievements in the field of natural language processing (NLP), have made significant progress in areas such as natural language understanding and generation. However, attempts to achieve the widespread use of these models have met numerous challenges, encompassing technical, social, ethical, and legal aspects. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the various challenges associated with LLMs and analyzes the key issues related to these technologies. Among the challenges discussed are model interpretability, biases in data and model outcomes, ethical concerns regarding privacy and data security, and their high computational requirements. Furthermore, the paper examines how these challenges impact the applications of LLMs in fields such as healthcare, law, media, and education, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues in the development and deployment of these models. Additionally, solutions for improving the robustness and control of models against biases and quality issues are proposed. Finally, the paper looks at the future of LLM research and the challenges that need to be addressed for the responsible and effective use of this technology. The goal of this paper is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and issues surrounding LLMs in order to enable the optimal and ethical use of these technologies in real-world applications.
