This study systematically investigated the corrosion behavior of P110 pipeline steel in simulated carbonated concrete environments through a combination of electrochemical testing and multiphysics simulation, with particular focus on revealing the evolution mechanisms of corrosion product deposition and ion concentration distribution under half crevice structures, providing new insights into localized corrosion in concealed areas. Experimental results showed that no significant corrosion occurred on the P110 steel surface in uncarbonated simulated pore solution. Conversely, the half crevice structure significantly promoted the development of localized corrosion in carbonated simulated pore solution, with the most severe corrosion and substantial accumulation of corrosion products observed at the crevice mouth region. COMSOL Multiphysics simulations demonstrated that this phenomenon was primarily attributed to local enrichment of Cl and H+ ions, leading to peak corrosion current density, and directional migration of Fe2+ ions toward the crevice mouth, causing preferential deposition of corrosion products at this location. This “electrochemical acceleration-corrosion product deposition” multiphysics coupling analysis of corrosion product deposition patterns within crevices represents a new perspective not captured by traditional crevice corrosion models. The established ion migration-corrosion product deposition model provides new theoretical foundations for understanding crevice corrosion mechanisms and predicting the service life of buried concrete pipelines. Background: A dilated main pancreatic duct (MPD) ≥ 5 mm can be observed in main-duct IPMNs (MD-IPMN) and chronic pancreatitis (CP); however, distinguishing between the two differently treated diseases can be difficult. Cell-free (cf) DNA in MPD fluid obtained by EUS-guided FNA might help to distinguish MD-IPMN from CP. Methods: All patients with a dilated MPD ≥ 5 mm on EUS during the period of 1 June 2017 to 30 April 2024 were prospectively analysed in this single-centre study, with EUS-guided MPD fluid aspiration performed for suspected MD-IPMN or CP in patients who were suitable for surgery. Twenty-two known gastrointestinal cancer genes, including GNAS and KRAS, were analysed by deep targeted (dt) NGS. The results were correlated with resected tissue, biopsy, and long-term follow-up. Results: A total of 164 patients with a dilated MPD were identified, of which 30 (18.3%) underwent EUS-guided FNA, with 1 patient having a minor complication (3.3%). Twenty-two patients (mean MPD diameter of 12.4 (7–31) mm) with a definitive, mostly surgically confirmed diagnosis were included in the analysis. Only a fish-mouth papilla, which was present in 3 of 12 (25%) MD-IPMNs, could reliably differentiate between the two diseases, with history, symptoms, diffuse or segmental MPD dilation, presence of calcifications on imaging, cytology, and CEA in the ductal fluid failing to achieve differentiation. However, GNAS mutations were found exclusively in 11 of the 12 (91.6%) patients with MD-IPMN (p < 0.01), whereas KRAS mutations were identified in both diseases. Conclusions: GNAS testing by dtNGS in aspirated fluid from dilated MPD obtained by EUS-guided FNA may help differentiate MD-IPMN from CP for surgical resection. Full article

Objectives: Anisakidosis is an emerging, cosmopolitan, and underdiagnosed parasitic disease caused by the accidental ingestion of third-stage anisakid larvae when consuming raw or improperly prepared seafood. Within hours to days of consuming infected raw seafood, patients may develop acute gastrointestinal symptoms including pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and/or constipation, as live anisakid larvae attach to the gastric, or more rarely, the intestinal mucosa. Cases have been reported in which the nematodes succeed at migrating from the stomach upwards to the esophagus and then the oral cavity. Therefore, the purpose of the present literature review is to collect, analyze, summarize and present the relevant epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, parasitological, therapeutic, and prognostic data concerning anisakidosis localized inside the oral cavity. Methods: An electronic search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Ovid databases was performed with them being accessed for the last time on 29 March 2025. Results: The present literature review identified 13 individual case reports of oral mucosa anisakidosis, which were published in the period 1971–2022. Conclusions: Our review aims to summarize the relevant epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, parasitological, therapeutic, and prognostic data regarding the oral localization of anisakidosis, a helminthic infection caused by the accidental ingestion of live anisakid larvae and which manifests mainly with gastrointestinal symptoms. Its localization in the oral mucosa appears to be exceptionally rare and, in most cases, occurs with a characteristic clinical picture, defined by the onset of acute mouth or throat pain immediately after the consumption of raw seafood and by the observation of one or more larvae, either lying on or penetrating the oral mucosa. Despite its rarity, dental health professionals and other clinicians should be aware of this disease and the possibility of its intraoral localization, since environmental factors on the one hand, and the adoption of foreign dietary habits on the other, will likely make anisakidosis a much more common disease worldwide in the near future. Background: Oral leukoplakia (OL) and proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) remain challenging entities due to the absence of reliable prognostic biomarkers. All-trans retinoic acid (atRA), a pivotal modulator of epithelial differentiation and mucosal integrity, has been proposed as a candidate biomarker. This study sought to quantify plasma RA levels in patients with OL and PVL compared to healthy controls, assessing their potential clinical utility. Methods: A cohort of 40 participants was recruited, comprising 10 patients with OL, 10 with PVL, and 20 healthy controls. This nested case–control study was derived from previously characterized institutional databases of oral potentially malignant disorders. Plasma samples were analyzed for atRA concentration using high-precision mass spectrometry. Statistical comparisons were conducted to evaluate differences between groups and associations with clinical outcomes. Results: Patients with homogeneous OL exhibited significantly reduced plasma atRA concentrations (mean 2.17 ± 0.39 pg/mL) relative to both PVL patients (2.64 ± 0.56 pg/mL) and healthy controls (2.66 ± 0.92 pg/mL), with p-values of 0.009 and 0.039, respectively. No statistically significant difference was found between PVL patients and controls. Furthermore, atRA levels demonstrated no correlation with clinicopathological variables or malignant progression within the PVL cohort. Conclusions: These preliminary findings indicate that diminished plasma atRA levels may serve as a prognostic marker for homogeneous oral leukoplakia, whilst its role in PVL appears limited. However, effect estimates were imprecise, and additional studies are warranted. Full article

This article examines the evolution and potential cross-cultural adaptations of the “Goddess of the Flaming Mouth”, Jvālāmukhī (Skt.) or Kha ‘bar ma (Tib.), in Indic and Tibetan traditions. A minor figure in medieval Hindu Tantras, Jvālāmukhī is today best known through her tangible manifestation as natural flames in a West Himalayan temple complex in the valley of Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India. The gap between her sparse portrayal in Tantric texts and her enduring presence at this local “seat of power” (śakti pīṭha) raises questions regarding her historical development and sectarian affiliations. To address these questions, we examine mentions of Jvālāmukhī’s Tibetan counterpart, Kha ‘bar ma, across a wide range of textual sources: canonical Buddhist texts, original Tibetan works of the Bön and Buddhist traditions, and texts on sacred geography. Regarded as a queen of ghost spirits (pretas) and field protector (kṣetrapāla) in Buddhist sources, her portrayal in Bön texts contain archaic motifs that hint at autochthonous and/or non-Buddhist origins. The assessment of Indic material in conjunction with Tibetan texts point to possible transformations of the goddess across these culturally proximate Himalayan settings. In presenting and contextualizing these transitions, this article contributes critical data to ongoing efforts to map the development, adaptation, and localization of Tantric deities along the Indo-Tibetan interface. This study provides the first comprehensive characterization of benthic macrofaunal communities in the Loukkos estuary, highlighting their spatial and seasonal variability and the environmental factors shaping their structure. A total of 47 species were identified across 12 site–season combinations, dominated by molluscs (47%), polychaetes (23%), and crustaceans (21%). Species richness varied considerably along the estuarine gradient, ranging from fewer than five species in the upstream sector to up to 30 species downstream. Overall, higher diversity was observed in the downstream areas and during the dry season. Macrofaunal density also exhibited substantial variability, ranging from 95 ind.m−2 to 14,852 ind.m−2, with a mean density of 2535 ± 4058 ind.m−2. Multivariate analyses identified four distinct benthic assemblages structured primarily by spatial factors (ANOSIM R = 0.86, p = 0.002), with negligible seasonal effect (R = −0.03, p = 0.6). Assemblages ranged from marine-influenced communities at the estuary mouth dominated by Cerastoderma edule, through rich and diverse seagrass-associated communities in the lower estuary dominated by Bittium reticulatum, and moderately enriched mid-estuary communities characterized by Scrobicularia plana and Hediste diversicolor, to species-poor upstream communities dominated by the tolerant species H. diversicolor. Canonical analysis showed that salinity and vegetation explain nearly 40% of the variation in benthic assemblages, highlighting the key role of Zostera seagrass beds as structuring habitats. Moreover, upstream anthropogenic pressures alter environmental conditions, reducing benthic diversity and favoring tolerant species. Full article

Background and objectives: Trismus is a frequent and debilitating complication in people with head and neck cancer (HNC) which leads to significant functional limitations and reduced quality of life. Rehabilitation interventions are commonly recommended to manage or prevent trismus. However, in many randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the theoretical justification for these interventions is poorly articulated, and the underlying biological or physiological mechanisms are not described in detail, limiting our understanding of why certain treatments may (or may not) work. This review aimed to identify and analyze how RCTs report the rationale for rehabilitation interventions and the explanations used to manage this population. Materials and Methods: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Five databases (PubMed, PEDro, Web of Science, Scopus, and EMBASE) were searched up to May 2025 for RCTs evaluating rehabilitation interventions for the management or prevention of treatment-induced trismus in patients with HNC. Data were extracted and synthesized narratively, focusing on the type of intervention, the rationale for its use, and the proposed mechanisms of action. Results: Of 2215 records identified, 24 RCTs met the inclusion criteria. Thirteen studies focused on preventive interventions—primarily exercise therapy—while the remainder addressed established trismus using exercise, manual therapy, electrotherapy, or combined treatment modalities. The rationales provided for intervention selection were heterogeneous and often lacked depth, with most studies justifying interventions based on their potential to improve mouth opening or reduce fibrosis but rarely grounding these claims in detailed pathophysiological models. Only half of the studies provided any mechanistic explanation for the intervention’s effects, and these were typically generic or speculative. Conclusions: RCTs investigating rehabilitation interventions for treatment-induced trismus in patients with HNC frequently lack comprehensive rationales and mechanistic explanations for their interventions. This gap limits the ability to refine and optimize treatment approaches, as the underlying processes driving clinical improvements remain poorly understood. Future research should be guided by theoretical models and include objective outcomes to better elucidate the mechanisms of action of interventions to inform clinical practice. Full article

Factors Influencing the Effectiveness of Botulinum Toxin Therapy in Bruxism Management

A total of 304 patients with bruxism (206 women, 98 men; mean age: 52.5 years) received 25 units of botulinum toxin injected into the bilateral masseter muscles; the changes in various clinical symptoms and their contributing factors were analyzed 2 months after treatment. The mean masseter muscle electromyographic amplitude (189 μV) and maximal bite force (618.4 N) significantly decreased after botulinum toxin therapy compared to that at baseline (55.4 μV, 527.3 N, respectively; p < 0.001). Maximal mouth opening (44 mm), sleep quality (visual analog scale: 5.3), shoulder and neck stiffness (6.7), and headache (5.4) significantly improved after the injection (47.3 mm, 6.6, 4.7, and 2.6, respectively; p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that the mean masseter electromyographic amplitude reduction rate was significantly affected by age, sex, and baseline amplitude (all p < 0.001); the maximal bite force reduction rate was influenced by age (p < 0.001), sex (p = 0.007), and baseline bite force (p = 0.008). Age, sex, and muscle activity may affect the therapeutic effects. A more effective outcome for bruxism can be achieved using a tailored approach involving dose adjustment, thereby preventing the side effects attributed to excessive dosage. Full article

Background/Objectives: Delayed gastric emptying (DGE) is a well-known complication of laparoscopic pylorus-preserving gastrectomy (LPPG). Patients who underwent LPPG in the KLASS-04 trial, which was a multicenter prospective randomized control trial comparing LPPG and laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG), showed an unneglectable incidence of long-term DGE compared to patients who underwent LDG. This study aimed to identify the multifactorial risk factors associated with DGE and to analyze the quality of life (QoL) of patients with DGE following LPPG. Methods: DGE was defined as “nearly normal diet residue” at least once in the endoscopic follow-up at 1, 2, and 3 years after the surgery. Clinicopathological features, surgical outcomes, and QoL were compared between the DGE and non-DGE groups. Results: DGE was observed in 21/124 patients (16.3%) who underwent LPPG. Patients without previous abdominal surgery had a higher incidence of DGE in the univariate (32% vs. 4.8%, p = 0.011) and logistic regression analyses (odds ratio: 0.106, 95% confidence interval: 0.014–0.824, p = 0.032). Patients with DGE reported more symptoms of nausea and vomiting (p = 0.004), constipation (p = 0.04), and a dry mouth (p = 0.005). Conclusions: Despite the strict protocol used to avoid well-known risk factors for DGE, such as damage to the hepatic branch of the vagus nerve, infrapyloric artery and vein, and short antral cuff, the LPPG group of the KLASS-04 trial exhibited a considerable incidence of DGE. No clinicopathological or surgical factors, other than the absence of a previous surgical history, were identified as multifactorial risk factors for DGE. However, DGE had a negative impact on the QoL of patients. Full article

The lacustrine to deltaic depositional systems of the Upper Jurassic Qigu Formation in the Yongjin area constitute a significant petroleum reservoir in the central Junggar Basin, China. Based on core observations, petrology analyses, paleoenvironment indicators and modern sedimentary analyses, sequence stratigraphy, lithofacies associations, sedimentary environment, evolution, and models were investigated. The Qigu Formation can be divided into a third-order sequence consisting of a lowstand systems tract (LST) and a transgressive systems tract (TST), which is further subdivided into six fourth-order sequences. Thirteen lithofacies and five lithofacies associations were identified, corresponding to shallow-water delta-front deposits. The paleoenvironment of the Qigu Formation is generally characterized by an arid freshwater environment, with a dysoxic to oxic environment. During the LST depositional period (SQ1–SQ3), the water depth was relatively shallow with abundant sediment supply, resulting in a widespread distribution of channel and mouth bar deposits. During the TST depositional period (SQ4–SQ6), the rapid rise in base level, combined with reduced sediment supply, resulted in swift delta retrogradation and widespread lacustrine sedimentation. Combined with modern sedimentary analysis, the shallow-water delta in the study area primarily comprises a composite system of single main channels and distributary channel-mouth bar complexes. The channel-bar complex eventually forms radially distributed bar assemblages with lateral incision and stacking. The distributary channel could incise a mouth bar deeply or shallowly, typically forming architectural patterns of going over or in the mouth bar. Reservoir test data suggest that the mouth bar sandstones are favorable targets for lithological reservoir exploration in shallow-water deltas. Full article

This study focuses on the clastic reservoir in the first member of Yaojia Formation within Qijia-Gulong Sag, Songliao Basin. The results indicate that the reservoir in the study area develops within a shallow-water delta sedimentary system. The dominant sedimentary microfacies comprise underwater distributary channels, mouth bars, and sheet sands. Among these, the underwater distributary channel microfacies exhibits primary porosity ranging from 15.97% to 17.71%, showing the optimal reservoir quality, whereas the sheet sand microfacies has a porosity of only 7.45% to 12.08%, indicating inferior physical properties. During diagenesis, compaction notably decreases primary porosity via particle rearrangement and elastic deformation, while calcite cementation and quartz overgrowth further occlude pore throats. Although dissolution can generate secondary porosity (locally up to 40%), the precipitation of clay minerals tends to block pore throats, leading to “ineffective porosity” (permeability generally < 5 mD) and overall low-porosity and low-permeability characteristics. Carbon–oxygen isotope analysis reveals a deficiency in organic acid supply in the study area, restricting the intensity of dissolution alteration. Reservoir quality evolution is dominantly governed by the combined controls of sedimentary microfacies and diagenesis. This study emphasizes that, within shallow-water delta sedimentary settings, the material composition of sedimentary microfacies and the dynamic equilibrium of diagenetic processes jointly govern reservoir property variations. This insight provides critical theoretical support for understanding diagenetic evolution mechanisms in clastic reservoirs and enabling precise prediction of high-quality reservoir distribution. Bcakground: The deepithelialized free gingival graft (DGG) technique provides high-quality connective tissue grafts (CTGs) with predictable outcomes for recession coverage. This study evaluates a novel method of free gingival graft (FGG) deepithelialization using an Er,Cr:YSGG laser (LDEE) for treating multiple gingival recessions. Methods: A split-mouth study was conducted on 46 (n = 46) recessions in nine patients (23 per test and control group). Sites were randomized. Full-thickness palatal grafts were harvested with a scalpel. In the test group (LDEE), deepithelialization was performed extraorally using an Er,Cr:YSGG laser (2780 nm; 2.5 W, 83.3 mJ, 30 Hz, 600 µm tip). In the control group (DEE), a 15c scalpel was used. All CTGs were applied using the modified coronally advanced tunnel (TUN) technique. Clinical parameters—recession depth (RD), keratinized tissue width (KT), gingival thickness (GT), pocket depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), pink esthetic score (PES), approximal plaque index (API), mean root coverage (MRC), and complete root coverage (CRC)—were assessed at baseline (T0), 3 months (T1), and 6 months (T2). Results: Both LDEE and DEE groups showed significant improvements in RD, KT, GT, PD, and CAL over time (p < 0.001). At T1 and T2, KT was significantly higher in the LDEE group (T1: 3.73 ± 0.72 mm; T2: 3.98 ± 0.76 mm) compared to the DEE group (T1: 3.21 ± 0.61 mm; T2: 3.44 ± 0.74 mm; p < 0.05). Other parameters (RD, GT, PD, CAL) showed no statistically significant intergroup differences at any time point (p > 0.05). After 6 months, MRC was 95% and CRC 82.6% for LDEE, compared to 94.8% and 82.6% for DEE (p > 0.05). PES scores were similar between groups at all time points (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Both laser- and scalpel-deepithelialized grafts effectively treated gingival recessions. LDEE combined with TUN resulted in significantly greater KT width compared to DEE + TUN. The study of muscle activity as a function of vertical dimension has been extensively developed in the field of oral physiology. It involves asking subjects to open their mouths to a predetermined distance and then recording muscle activity in that position. Most studies perform this without accounting for physiological differences among patients. The objective of this study is to present a protocol for recording muscle activity at various mouth-opening levels using electromagnetic articulography (EMA) and surface electromyography (sEMG), normalizing opening degrees and muscle activity. Muscle activity recordings were obtained in the position of maximum intercuspation and maximum mouth opening. Based on these recordings, the position corresponding to 5–50% of maximum opening was calculated. EMA and sEMG recordings were performed at these levels. Muscle activity during maximum voluntary clenching was recorded and used to normalize the previous data. In all cases, three 5-second recordings were obtained. The analysis of muscle activity using EMA and sEMG did not present any complications. A slight difference was observed between the intended percentage of mouth opening and the actual percentage achieved. The method described in this study is a tool that allows for the analysis of muscle activity at various mouth-opening levels in a way that has not been previously explored in the literature. Background/Objectives: This study aims to uncover the variables related to the success of the intervention. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on patients who underwent joint replacement surgery utilizing a customized alloplastic system between 2018 and 2023, comprising subjects with complete records for both the planning and follow-up phases. The Student’s t-test was applied with a significance threshold of p < 0.05. Results: Forty-eight subjects were admitted for initial analysis, and 31 subjects were evaluated with a minimum follow-up of 1 year and a maximum of 7 years, with a mean age of 36.37 ± 15.53. The TMJ diagnosis was mainly with degenerative TMJ disease, followed by ankylosis and craniofacial syndromes, and an average of 2.1 ± 1.2 previous surgeries were noted. Degenerative joint disease correlated with increased pain (p < 0.0001) and a higher prevalence of prior joint surgery (p < 0.0001). Thirty-one subjects were followed up with 47 prostheses installed; 74.4% underwent complementary surgery with other facial osteotomies. Significant improvements (p < 0.0001) were observed when comparing pain levels pre- and postoperatively, with a decrease from 5.5 (±2.3) to 2.2 (±0.4). Concerning the interincisal opening, there was a significant increase (p < 0001) from 25.85 (±10.2) mm to 35.93 (±4.2) mm in mouth opening. TMJ replacement treatment is efficient and effective, demonstrating stability in follow-up assessments for up to 7 years. Conclusions: The indications for replacement are diverse and may benefit patients who have not yet progressed to end-stage TMJ disease. Full article

In the past two decades, little information has been updated to understand the resource status of the crab species Ovalipes punctatus in the East China Sea Region. In this study, we conducted surveys in 2018 and 2019 to identify the seasonal spatial distribution patterns of the economically important sand crab Ovalipes punctatus (De Haan 1833) in the southern Yellow and East China Seas. In the study area, the largest biomass of crabs was observed in the fishing grounds of Dasha and the Yangtze River mouth, and the second largest biomass was detected in the Jiangwai-Zhouwai area. Seasonally, the total biomass order in these areas was summer > autumn & winter > spring, and the mean average individual weight order was spring & summer > winter > autumn. These findings provided maps of the seasonal spatial distribution pattern of the species across seasons, which were then used in climate-change scenario models. Model predictions suggested that O. punctatus might migrate northward and offshore under climate warming conditions, and that the climate scenario SSP585-2100 might be the most negative case, respectively, for the habitat area of gain% minus loss%. These data can be used to develop robust and systematic regional fisheries resource management policies that consider adaptation measures to address the impact of environmental and climate change along China’s coasts and other areas in the world.
