Wound care in military and combat environments poses distinct challenges that set it apart from conventional medical practice in civilian settings. The nature of injuries sustained on the battlefield—often complex, contaminated, and involving extensive tissue damage—combined with limited access to immediate medical intervention, significantly increases the risk of infection, delayed healing, and adverse outcomes. Traditional wound dressings frequently prove inadequate under such extreme conditions, as they have not been designed to address the specific physiological and logistical constraints present during armed conflicts. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent progress in the development of advanced wound dressings tailored for use in military scenarios. Special attention has been given to multifunctional dressings that go beyond basic wound coverage by incorporating biologically active macromolecules such as collagen, chitosan, thrombin, alginate, therapeutic peptides, and growth factors. These compounds contribute to properties including moisture balance control, exudate absorption, microbial entrapment, and protection against secondary infection. This review highlights the critical role of advanced wound dressings in improving medical outcomes for injured military personnel. The potential of these technologies to reduce complications, enhance healing rates, and ultimately save lives underscores their growing importance in modern battlefield medicine. Full article

Background: Since the election of Hamas in 2006, Gaza has endured eight major military conflicts, culminating in the ongoing 2023–2025 war, now surpassing 520 days. This protracted violence, compounded by a 17-year blockade, has resulted in the near-total collapse of Gaza’s health system. Over 49,000 deaths, widespread displacement, and the destruction of more than 60% of health infrastructure have overwhelmed both local capacity and international humanitarian response. Objectives: This narrative review aims to examine and synthesize the current literature (October 2023–April 2025) on the health crisis in Gaza, with a specific focus on identifying key themes and knowledge gaps relevant to rebuilding a sustainable health system. The review also seeks to outline strategic pathways for recovery in the context of ongoing conflict and systemic deprivation. Methods: Given the urgency and limitations of empirical data from conflict zones, a narrative review approach was adopted. Fifty-two sources—including peer-reviewed articles, editorials, reports, and correspondence—were selected through targeted searches using Medline and Google Scholar. The analysis was framed within a public health and political economy perspective, also taking health system building blocks into consideration. Results: The reviewed literature emphasizes emergency needs: trauma care, infectious disease control, and supply chain restoration. Innovations such as mobile clinics and telemedicine offer interim solutions. Gaps include limited attention to mental health (including that of health workers), local governance, and sustainable planning frameworks. Conclusions: Sustainable reconstruction requires a durable ceasefire; international stewardship aligned with local ownership; and a phased, equity-driven strategy emphasizing primary care, mental health, trauma management, and community engagement. The management of public health projects in a BANI (brittle, anxious, non-linear, incomprehensible) environment, exemplified by the ongoing war in Ukraine, presents unprecedented challenges due to fragile systems, heightened uncertainty, and complex socio-political dynamics. This study proposes an AI-driven framework to enhance the resilience and effectiveness of public health interventions under such conditions. By integrating a coupled SEIR–Infodemic–Panicdemic Model with war-specific factors, we simulate the interplay of infectious disease spread, misinformation dissemination, and panic dynamics over 1500 days in a Ukrainian city (Kharkiv). The model incorporates time-varying parameters to account for population displacement, healthcare disruptions, and periodic war events, reflecting the evolving conflict context. Sensitivity and risk–opportunity analyses reveal that disease transmission, misinformation, and infrastructure damage significantly exacerbate epidemic peaks, while AI-enabled interventions, such as fact-checking, mental health support, and infrastructure recovery, offer substantial mitigation potential. Qualitative assessments identify technical, organisational, ethical, regulatory, and military risks, alongside opportunities for predictive analytics, automation, and equitable healthcare access. Quantitative simulations demonstrate that risks, like increased displacement, can amplify infectious peaks by up to 28.3%, whereas opportunities, like enhanced fact-checking, can reduce misinformation by 18.2%. These findings provide a roadmap for leveraging AI to navigate BANI environments, offering actionable insights for public health practitioners in Ukraine and other crisis settings. The study underscores AI’s transformative role in fostering adaptive, data-driven strategies to achieve sustainable health outcomes amidst volatility and uncertainty. Full article

Objectives: Assessing balance in highly trained individuals, such as military pilots, poses challenges, as deficits may be underestimated when compared to general population norms. To address this, several studies have proposed tailored databases providing reference values for specific populations. This study retrospectively analyzed balance characteristics in active-duty military pilots of the Italian Air Force. Methods: We enrolled 106 subjects split into two groups: 53 military pilots from the Italian Air Force and 53 civilians without flight experience or exposure to specific vestibular stimuli. All participants underwent ENT examinations with audiometric testing to exclude related pathologies, followed by a personal history collection. Subsequently, they completed the EquiTest protocol across six standard conditions. Results: Significant differences were observed between Army Aviators and Non-Aviators. The PREF variable showed the most consistent distinction, with military pilots demonstrating a superior performance (p < 0.01). Additionally, borderline differences were noted in Condition 6 of the equilibrium scores (p = 0.056), and in the Centre of Gravity (COG) analysis along the X-axis for Conditions 1 and 5 (p = 0.090), and for Condition 2 (p = 0.050). These findings suggest enhanced postural control strategies among Army Aviators under conditions of sensory conflict. Conclusions: These findings suggest that normative balance values specific to military pilots should be used when evaluating aviators recovering from balance deficits. Such tailored benchmarks can help determine the need for rehabilitation before returning to duty, ensuring optimal performance under demanding conditions. Further research is necessary to explore the underlying mechanisms responsible for these adaptations and to identify the specific stimuli that contribute to the enhanced balance capabilities observed in this highly trained population. The United States national identity is changing as the non-religious population is growing and fewer Americans follow traditional Christian faiths. When Alexis De Tocqueville visited the United States, he found that the national government gained legitimacy and support from the popular national religion. This faith was nominally Christian but lacked any meaningful theological content. The national creed was a simple monotheism that was supported through the public’s integration of a Cartesian methodology. This national religion was critical in providing the foundation for American economic growth and identity. Today, fewer Americans identify as Christians than at any point in its history, and more citizens have no religious preference or creed. The dominant religious culture is changing, and to understand the United States future, it is important to identify the political preferences of the non-religious population. This paper looks at the most recent Cooperative Election Survey and assesses the non-religious population’s political participation and its aggregate support for U.S. military aid to Ukraine. The data show that the non-religious population is less politically active and more opposed to miliary aid to Kyiv. United States is becoming more secular. The division between the traditional religious and the growing secular populations is generating a cultural conflict—one that has a fundamental consequence for the American national identity. Background: The global space economy has grown remarkably, witnessing a 10-fold increase in active satellites during the last 15 years. This growth was accompanied by both the increase in geopolitical tensions feeding huge investments (the New Space Race), on the one hand, and the transformation, shifting from a domain historically dominated by government-led programs to one partially energized by commercial players and innovative business models (“New Space”), on the other hand. Objective: To assess the space economy’s current state and future prospects by considering its economic and social dimensions. Methods: Over 120 scholarly articles and “grey” literature positions (e.g., industry reports) were reviewed. The review was structured by a modified Structure–Conduct–Performance framework originally developed by industrial organization (IO) scholars. Findings: Outer space creates extremely harsh conditions for placing and operating objects in orbits, which results in high launching costs, steep reliability standards, capital intensity, and risks that are unmatched in most terrestrial industries. One of the main motivations to venture into this harsh domain was, and still is, the desire to dominate or the fear of being subjugated by others. This “original sin”, born of geopolitical rivalries, continues to cast a shadow over the space economy, channeling the majority of public space budgets into military-related programs. Moreover, many space technologies have a dual-use feature. Not surprisingly, governments are still the major source of demand, dominating midstream in the space value chain. This triad—harsh physics, great power rivalry, and a state-centric midstream—produces a specificity of the sector. In the recent two decades, new entrants (called “New Space”) have begun altering market structure, resulting in new conduct patterns focused on pursuits towards serial production, reusability, and lowering costs. Performance outcomes are mixed. While some efficiency gains are unprecedented, some doubts about market power and negative externalities arise. The assessment of the space economy’s performance is a challenge, as such, due to the blurred boundary between political objectives (supplying public goods, mitigating negative externalities) and economic optimization. Such trade-offs are becoming even more complicated considering the potential conflict between national and global perspectives. The paper offers a preliminary, descriptive study of the space economy through the lens of the modified S-C-P framework, laying basic foundations for the future, possibly more rigorous research of the increasingly important space economy. Russia’s conflict with Ukraine, which escalated into full-scale military confrontation in February 2022, originated in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea and the backing of pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk. However, this war extends beyond bilateral hostilities, reflecting a broader geopolitical confrontation with the West that aligns with Vladimir Putin’s strategic vision, as signalled in his 2007 Munich Security Conference speech. Russian security doctrines have consistently framed the West as an existential threat, a perception reinforced by state-controlled media. This study examines the role of Russian state media in shaping public perceptions of the West between 2014 and 2022. It explores how Russian media, particularly RIA Novosti, constructed adversarial narratives about Latvia, Poland, and Serbia within the framework of Russian security policy. Through qualitative content analysis, the research investigates the alignment of media narratives with official strategic objectives, the portrayal of Western nations as threats, and the intended audience of these narratives. The findings underscore the integral role of state-controlled media in Russia’s security strategy, highlighting an increasing consolidation of media control to sustain domestic legitimacy and justify external aggression. As Russia faces growing challenges, media restrictions are expected to intensify, reinforcing state-driven narratives and information isolation. Full article

Employees have both work and non-work lives, and these domains of investment can interfere with each other. The present investigation (total N = 497) sought to understand the potential role(s) of work-related emotional intelligence (W-EI) in managing these forms of conflict, with samples consisting of full-time military personnel (Study 1), postdoctoral researchers (Study 2), and employees from diverse occupations (Study 3). Higher levels of W-EI were associated with lower levels of family-to-work conflict, but not work-to-family conflict, suggesting an asymmetric form of conflict shielding. Lesser experiences of family-work conflict also provided some explanation for why employees with higher W-EI levels were less prone to counterproductive work behaviors and work-related burnout. In addition, employees with higher W-EI levels were less prone to counterproductive work behaviors even when levels of family-work conflict were relatively high. The results highlight multiple ways in which employees with high W-EI levels manage the family-work interface. Full article

The Multi-Objective Optimization Problem (MOOP) in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is a challenging issue that requires balancing multiple conflicting objectives, such as maintaining coverage, connectivity, and network lifetime all together. These objectives are important for a functioning WSN safety-critical applications, whether in environmental monitoring, military surveillance, or smart cities. To address these challenges, we propose a novel bio-inspired Bird Flocking Node Scheduling algorithm, which takes inspiration from the natural flocking behavior of birds migrating over long distance to optimize sensor node activity in a distributed and energy-efficient manner. The proposed algorithm integrates the Lyapunov function to maintain connected coverage while optimizing energy efficiency, ensuring service availability and reliability. The effectiveness of the algorithm is evaluated through extensive simulations, namely MATLAB R2018b simulator coupled with a Pareto front, comparing its performance with our previously developed BAT node scheduling algorithm. The results demonstrate significant improvements across key performance metrics, specifically, enhancing network coverage by 8%, improving connectivity by 10%, and extending network lifetime by an impressive 80%. These findings highlight the potential of bio-inspired Bird Flocking optimization techniques in advancing WSN dependability, making them more sustainable and suitable for real-world WSN safety-critical systems. Conducted in challenging environments such as disaster or conflict areas, operational medicine presents unique challenges for the delivery of efficient and quality healthcare. It exposes first responders and medical personnel to many unexpected health risks and dangerous situations. To tackle these issues, artificial intelligence (AI) has been progressively incorporated into operational medicine, both on the front lines and also more recently in support roles. The ability of AI to rapidly analyze high-dimensional data and make inferences has opened up a wide variety of opportunities and increased efficiency for its early adopters, notably for the United States military, for non-invasive medical imaging and for mental health applications. This review discusses the current state of AI and highlights its broad array of potential applications in operational medicine as developed for the United States military. Full article

The growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical issue for both civilians and the military. With each successive conflict, pathogens become more resistant, making the management of infections in casualties increasingly challenging. To better understand the scope and characteristics of conflict-related AMR, a comprehensive literature search was conducted in the PubMed database in April 2025, using defined search terms related to war casualties and antimicrobial resistance. We screened and included 117 relevant publications, comprising original research articles, reviews, case series, case reports, editorials, and commentaries, published in English or French, with no date restriction. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on multidrug-resistant bacteria most commonly isolated from war casualties, their associated resistance mechanisms, and the microbiological diagnostic tools available at various levels of the military continuum of care (Roles 1–4). It also presents strategies for preventing cross-contamination and infection in resource-limited combat settings and provides practical, field-adapted recommendations for clinicians, from first responders to specialized care providers, aiming to improve infection management in armed conflict zones and mitigate the spread of AMR. This paper addresses critical challenges in renewable energy research, particularly under the difficult operational conditions caused by the military conflict in Ukraine. Despite significant infrastructure loss due to the armed conflict (13% of solar and 70% of wind power), Ukraine maintains a commitment to reach 27% renewable energy in final consumption by 2030. However, the wartime conditions present unique challenges to scientific research, with laboratories vulnerable to missile strikes and frequently requiring evacuation. This paper introduces innovative portable laboratory stands designed for comprehensive analysis and monitoring of photovoltaic (PV) module parameters. These portable platforms, integrating advanced microcontrollers, sensors, and data-processing units, enable effective real-time monitoring and parameter estimation of PV modules, thereby enhancing their operational efficiency and reliability. Two distinct portable laboratory setups were developed and are detailed: the first focuses on real-time voltage and current measurements, while the second, termed the photovoltaic module parameter scanner (SPFEM), emphasizes data collection, remote data transmission, and database integration for subsequent analysis. This research provides essential tools for ensuring continuity in scientific activities and practical training for students and researchers amidst the ongoing security threats. The presented systems significantly contribute to optimizing the performance of PV systems in Ukraine and underscore the necessity for continuous adaptation and technological advancement in renewable energy infrastructure. The coastal zone consists of diverse littoral habitats, which we categorize into two primary types: linear and areal. Investigating linear littoral habitats is crucial for resolving the ‘coastal squeeze’ phenomenon in coastal and marine protected areas and in seaside resorts. Our research aims to identify the critical conditions for the conversion of defunct seaside military training areas as brownfields into coastal protected areas and small-scale seaside resorts and their sustainable planning and management. The development of seaside tourism facilities is taking place both on the coast and in the hinterland, but the coast is used for tourism much more intensively than the hinterland. It is challenging to ‘pull’ tourists away from the linear beach to the areal hinterland. We argue that the distinctiveness of the resource use conflicts in coastal and hinterland tourism lies in an essential difference between the system’s linear and areal littoral habitats, as 78% of summer visitors in Pajūris Regional Park in Lithuania come for active leisure in nature. The results of our study show that combining the GIS interpretation algorithms, supported by the innovative conjoining of DPSIR and Delphi analytical tools, ensures site-tailored integrated management of the linear waterfront and the areal hinterland. An Approach for Studying the Direct Effects of Shock Waves on Neuronal Cell Structure and Function

Recent U.S. military conflicts have underscored the knowledge gap regarding the neurological changes associated with blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI). In vitro models of TBIs have the advantage of following the neuronal response to biomechanical perturbations in real-time, which can be exceedingly difficult in animal models. Here, we sought to develop an in vitro approach with controlled blast biomechanics to study the direct effects of the primary shock wave at the neuronal level. A blast injury apparatus mimicking the human skull and cerebrospinal fluid was developed. Primary neuronal cells were cultured inside the apparatus and exposed to a 70 kPa peak blast overpressure using helium gas in a blast tube. Neuronal viability was measured 24 h after blast exposure. The transmission of the pressure wave through the skull is believed to be a factor in injury to the cells of the brain. Three thicknesses in the apparatus wall were studied to represent the range of thicknesses in a human skull. To study the transmission of the shock wave to the neurons, the incident pressure at the apparatus location, as well as internal apparatus pressure, were measured. Analysis of the internal pressure wave revealed that wave oscillation frequency, not amplitude, was a significant factor in cell viability after a bTBI. This finding is related to the viscoelastic properties of the brain and suggests that the transmission of the shock wave through the skull is an important variable in blast injury. Full article

Wavelet Entropy for Efficiency Assessment of Price, Return, and Volatility of Brent and WTI During Extreme Events

This study analyzes the market efficiency of crude oil markets, namely Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI), during three different periods: pre-COVID-19, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and during the ongoing Russia–Ukraine military conflict. To evaluate the efficiency of crude oil markets, wavelet entropy is computed from price, return, and volatility series. Our empirical results show that WTI prices are predictable during the Russia–Ukraine military conflict, but Brent prices are difficult to predict during the same period. The prices of Brent and WTI were difficult to predict during the COVID-19 pandemic. Returns in Brent and WTI are more difficult to predict during the military conflict than they were during the pandemic. Finally, volatility in Brent and WTI carried more information during the pandemic compared to the military conflict. Also, volatility series for Brent and WTI are difficult to predict during the military conflict. These findings offer insightful information for investors, traders, and policy makers in relation to crude oil energy under various extreme market conditions. Full article
