Background/Objectives: Taste dysfunction is a highly prevalent yet underrecognized complication among patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), significantly impairing nutritional intake, treatment adherence, and quality of life (QoL). This comprehensive review synthesizes current knowledge on the pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical management of taste dysfunction associated with HNC and its treatments, particularly chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Methods: A structured literature search was performed across PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library for articles published between January 2015 and February 2025. Studies were included if they investigated taste dysfunction related to HNC, focusing on pathophysiological mechanisms and therapeutic interventions. A total of 47 original studies were analyzed through a narrative synthesis due to heterogeneity in study designs and outcomes. Results: Taste dysfunction in HNC patients arises from tumor-related inflammation, cytotoxic injury from chemotherapy, and radiation-induced epithelial and neural damage. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy often exert synergistic negative effects on gustatory function. Management strategies identified include dietary counselling, nutritional supplementation (zinc, lactoferrin, monosodium glutamate, miraculin), pharmacological agents targeting salivary function, and non-pharmacological interventions such as acupuncture, photobiomodulation, and reconstructive surgery. However, the evidence is limited by small sample sizes, methodological variability, and the frequent exclusion of HNC patients from broader dysgeusia trials. Reported prevalence of taste dysfunction ranged from 39% to 97.4%, with higher rates observed among patients treated with radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy. Conclusions: Taste dysfunction remains a critical yet unmet clinical challenge in HNC patients. High-quality, targeted research is urgently needed to develop standardized assessments and evidence-based management strategies to improve patient outcomes. Full article

Phytotechnologies offer sustainable solutions for remediating mine residues by combining site rehabilitation with the potential recovery of secondary and critical raw materials (SRMs and CRMs, respectively), contributing to resource efficiency strategies. This study explored the direct propagation of Atriplex halimus unrooted cuttings into metal-contaminated mine tailings, assessing survival, biomass production, and trace metal accumulation. Treatments were carried out on mine tailings, with and without the addition of organic and inorganic amendments, and on commercial soil as a control. After an 8-week preliminary trial, Atriplex halimus demonstrated moderate survival and growth without phytotoxic symptoms, despite elevated trace metal concentrations. Significant accumulation of zinc, lead, and cadmium as model contaminants in the biomass of Atriplex halimus (up to 495.4, 31.9, and 1.2 mg kg−1, respectively), as well as magnesium and manganese as model CRMs (2081 and 87.8 mg kg−1, respectively) was observed in aerial tissues, comparable with traditional, though more labor-intensive propagation methods. Plants’ ability to accumulate metals was high in the presence of amendments added to promote biomass growth. These results highlight the significance of direct propagation by unrooted cuttings as a promising, low-cost strategy to initiate site restoration in metal-contaminated areas and warrant further investigation under field conditions and over longer durations. Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is a microalga widely used as a dietary supplement in sports nutrition and in treating metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome. Spirulina’s cell structure limits digestibility and reduces the availability of bioactive compounds. The extraction processes, coupled with encapsulation, can enhance the bioavailability of nutritional and antioxidant compounds, protecting them from degradation, preserving their functional activity, and supporting controlled release. The physicochemical properties of liposomes (Lps), bilosomes (Bls), and gelatin-enriched bilosomes (G-Bls) with incorporated Spirulina extracts were investigated. The delivery systems exhibited small particle size (101.8 ± 0.5 to 129.7 ± 1.2 nm), homogeneous distribution (polydispersity index (PDI) 0.17 ± 6.67 to 0.33 ± 9.06), negative surface charges (−31.9 ± 5.2 to 31.1 ± 6.4 mV), and high entrapment efficiency (>80%). G-Bls demonstrated effective retention of the extract, with a low release rate at pH 1.2 (41.8% ± 6.1) and controlled release at pH 7.0 (52.5% ± 3.0). Biocompatibility studies on Caco-2 cells showed that G-Bls maintained high cell viability at 200 μg·mL−1 (87.89% ± 10.35) and significantly mitigated H2O2-induced oxidative stress at 20 and 200 μg·mL−1, increasing cell viability by 23.47% and 19.28%. G-Bls are a promising delivery system for enhancing the stability, bioavailability, and protective effects of Spirulina extracts, supporting their potential application in dietary supplements aimed at promoting sports performance and recovery, mitigating exercise-induced oxidative stress, and managing metabolic disorders. The demand for sustainable and high-nutritional food sources is forcing the industrial sector to find alternatives to animal proteins. Microalgae and macroalgae showed remarkable protein and bioactive compound content, offering a promising solution for the food industry. However, the high production cost represents the main concern related to microalgae development. Thus, strategies that can reduce production costs, preserve the environment, and improve the nutritional characteristics of microalgae are required. Exploiting water from dismissed mines could lead to energy savings in production by opening new industrial opportunities to produce microalgae. Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina) can be grown in open ponds and photobioreactors; the composition of the growth medium and the light radiation could affect its biochemical composition. This work investigated the influence of mine water with the addition of Zarrouk growth medium on the biochemical composition of the final dried Spirulina. The trials were performed in vertical tubular photobioreactors (PBRs) exposed to the same light radiance. Samples were compared with standard growing conditions using distilled water with the addition of Zarrouk medium. Spirulina strains showed good tolerance to medium/high concentrations of Cl, SO42− and nitrogen in mine water. The experiment lasted 12 days, showing significant differences in protein, lipids, and carbohydrates between trials. Spirulina grown in mine water showed higher protein levels, 52.64 ± 2.51 g·100 g−1 dry weight. On the other hand, Spirulina grown in distilled water had higher lipids and carbohydrate levels, accounting for 9.22 ± 1.01 and 31.72 ± 1.57 g·100 g−1 dry weight. At the end of the experiment, both trials showed similar growth and pigment concentration. The availability of a high amount of mine water at no cost and at the ideal temperature for Spirulina cultivation increases environmental sustainability and reduces production costs. The results in terms of biomass were comparable to those of standard cultivation, whereas proteins showed higher values. Moreover, coupling renewable energy sources can further reduce production costs, with promising industrial and market developments. Full article

The cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina) has a global annual production of approximately 18,000 tons. Spirulina has notable nutritional benefits and is a key component of dietary supplements. However, efficiently extracting its bioactive compounds poses challenges. This study aimed to develop an eco-innovative method to enhance Spirulina’s antioxidant and nutritional values. The extraction protocol included a maceration step in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.4) at 5 °C for 48 h, followed by ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) at 400 W and 30 kHz, with a frequency of 30 cycles per min (consisting of 1 s on/off cycles, for a total of 6 extraction cycles). The proposed methodology allowed for the quantitative recovery of high-value compounds from Spirulina raw material (control), with increased yields of total lipids (+20.29%), total fatty acids (+60.48%), allophycocyanin (Apc, +41.41%), phycoerythrin (Pe, +81.42%), carotenoids (+30.84%), and polyphenols (+65.99%), leading to a boost in antioxidant activity (+42.95%). Conversely, the recoveries of proteins (−16.65%), carbohydrates (−18.84%), and phycocyanin (Pc, −0.77%) were incomplete. This study suggests a green extraction approach using PBS coupled with UAE, with promising energy and cost savings and potential applications in the dietary supplement sector. Full article

Background and Clinical Significance: Dental demineralization is a multifactorial process influenced by biofilm activity, diet, and systemic conditions. While gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is known for its role in enamel erosion, its contribution to cariogenic processes remains underexplored. Additionally, Brugada syndrome, a genetic arrhythmia disorder, may indirectly affect oral health due to medical complexities and reduced motivation for dental care. This case highlights the management of extensive mineral loss in a patient with GERD and Brugada syndrome, emphasizing the importance of personalized remineralization strategies and interdisciplinary collaboration. Case Presentation: A 27-year-old male with Brugada syndrome, treated with a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD), presented with widespread enamel demineralization, multiple active carious lesions, and gingival inflammation. Clinical evaluation revealed a high DMFT index (15), significant plaque accumulation, and an oral pH of 5.8, indicating an elevated risk of mineral loss. Poor hygiene habits, frequent sugar intake, and GERD-related acid exposure contributed to his condition. The therapeutic approach included patient education, fluoride-functionalized hydroxyapatite toothpaste and mousse, dietary modifications, and restorative procedures. After 120 days, improvements included enhanced enamel integrity, a reduction in plaque index (from 50% to 25%), and the resolution of gingival inflammation (BOP: 38% to 12%). Conclusions: This case underscores the importance of an integrated approach to managing dental demineralization in patients with systemic conditions. The combination of remineralization therapy, behavioral modifications, and structured follow-up yielded significant clinical benefits. Further research is needed to develop standardized protocols for individuals at high risk due to systemic factors affecting oral health. Full article

The Wolf isotopic response (WIR) refers to the development of cutaneous lesions in areas of previously healed but unrelated skin disease. While most are observed in healed herpes zoster, WIR has been reported in various other contexts. Affected areas are believed to exhibit immune dysregulation, lymphatic dysfunction, and altered neuromediator activity, increasing susceptibility to inflammatory, neoplastic, and infectious conditions. This phenomenon aligns with the broader concept of the “immunocompromised district”, which also encompasses the Koebner phenomenon and its reverse. Herein, we present the case of a 96-year-old woman who developed multiple cysts and comedones at the site of a resolved herpes zoster. Due to persistent and refractory inflammation, curettage was performed, and histopathological examination revealed angiosarcoma with a pseudolymphomatous reaction interspersed among the cysts. The coexistence of multiple types of WIR is rare but not unprecedented, highlighting the importance of recognizing the diverse pathologic conditions that can arise in such settings. In this review, we explore the historical evolution of terminology used to describe lesions in vulnerable skin areas and related phenomena. We also provide an updated overview of current pathogenic theories and present a comprehensive compilation of postherpetic reactions reported to date. Full article

Introduction: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignant skin tumor. While rarely fatal, it can cause local tissue damage. Part I of the review summarizes the dermoscopic features of BCC and the diagnostic accuracy of dermoscopy in the diagnosis of BCC. Methods: A search of the PubMed database was performed for studies reporting on the diagnostic accuracy of dermoscopy or dermoscopic findings in BCC, either pigmented or non-pigmented, located anywhere on the body, of any histopathologic subtype, size and at any age of onset. Results: BCC was found to present with a wide range of dermoscopic features, including white structures (shiny white lines, shiny white areas, rosettes), yellow structures (milia-like cysts, yellow lobular-like structures), multiple aggregated yellow-white globules (MAY globules), blue structures (blue ovoid nests), vascular structures (arborizing vessels, short fine telangiectasias), multiple small erosions/ulcerations, features of regression (pepper-like structures, white scar-like areas) and pigmented structures (spoke-wheel areas, maple leaf-like areas (MLLAs), blue/gray dots). Dermoscopy showed a sensitivity of 67.6–98.6% and a positive predictive value (PPV) of 85.9–97% in identifying BCC. The physician’s experience and training improve the accuracy, however, BCCs on the trunk and extremities, particularly of superficial subtypes, may still constitute a challenge. Conclusions: Dermoscopy, especially when performed by a trained physician, increases the accuracy of early BCC detection. Full article

Skeletal muscle is associated with cardiometabolic health. The appendicular skeletal muscle index (aSMI) represents the skeletal muscle mass “corrected” for height and constitutes a clinically applicable feature of sarcopenia. The relation of the aSMI with dietary habits is not clear, especially in young adults. The present pilot study aimed to investigate the relationship between the aSMI and Mediterranean diet adherence in young adults. A cross-sectional study of 151 university students was conducted. Anthropometry and bioimpedance analysis (TANITA-MC780) were performed. The aSMI was calculated as the sum of the upper and lower extremity muscle masses divided by height squared. The HPAQ questionnaire was used for physical activity evaluation. A validated food frequency questionnaire was used for dietary assessment, and the Mediterranean Diet Score (MedDietScore) was calculated. Multivariate linear regression models with log-aSMI as a dependent variable were applied. The MedDietScore was positively related to log-aSMI in the total sample (B = 0.009, SE = 0.004, p = 0.05, R2 for total model = 71%) irrespective of gender, age, ΒΜΙ, smoking, physical activity, and academic year and in males (B = 0.027, SE = 0.011, p = 0.023 R2 for total model = 37%) irrespective οf age and ΒΜΙ. The positive association of the MedDietScore with aSMI supports the importance of the adoption of a Mediterranean dietary pattern—rich in plant proteins and antioxidant/anti-inflammatory compounds—in maintaining/attaining muscle mass in young subjects. Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L.) is an herbaceous perennial plant from the Mediterranean Basin, cultivated as a poly-annual crop in different countries. Artichoke produces a considerable amount of waste at the end of the harvesting season in the field (5.2 tons/ha/year, DW) and from the industrial processing of fresh-cut products during the harvesting time (800 tons/year). The qualitative and quantitative phenolic profile and inulin content of artichoke samples from the field and industrial processing waste have been investigated after green extraction. The best operative conditions were achieved using the dried biomass extracted with water at 80 °C for 120 min and a matrix-to-solvent ratio of 1:30. The data obtained showed that the concentration of total polyphenols in fresh artichokes followed this order: stems > heads > leaves > outer bracts. Chlorogenic acid and 3,4 di-O-caffeoylquinic acid were the most concentrated caffeoylquinic derivates, whereas luteolin 7-O-malonyglucoside, luteolin 7-O-glucoside and 7-O-rutinoside were the most abundant flavonoids. The artichoke by-products showed high polyphenolic and inulin values, thus representing an important source of health-promoting biomolecules for application in pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical fields. According to the principles of circular economy, the work scheme proposed in this article, the use of waste and its processing into useful products such as nutraceutical supplies could provide a practical and economic opportunity for companies and farmers involved in the cultivation and industrial processing of artichokes. Honey, a natural food with a rich history, is produced by honeybees and other species of bees from nectar, other plant fluids, and honeydew of sap-sucking insects. During foraging, these bees may be exposed to plant protection products (PPPs), metals, and metalloids, potentially leading to residues in honey and hive products that could have a negative impact on human safety. Recognizing the lack of an appropriate methodology for pesticide contamination of honey and other hive products, this research aims to support the need for studies on residues in pollen and bee products for human consumption to establish safe maximum residue levels (MRLs) for consumers. A UHPLC-MS/MS residues method and a modified QuEChERS extraction were applied to simultaneously determine 237 pesticide residues in honey and pollen. The study in North Sardinia analyzed honey and pollen samples from six areas for pesticide residues and verified 27 heavy metals and metalloid residues using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). The data obtained showed residues at levels close to the LOQ of the method, cycloate in a few samples of pollen, and dichlorvos, zoxamide, cycloate, and chlorantraniliprole in honey samples. All samples showed the absence of heavy metal contamination. Overall, no risk to human health was identified. The results of this study confirm that honey and pollen may be a good bioindicator of environmental contamination of a wide area surrounding honeybee hives. Full article

Nonpharmacological Interventions in the Management of Xerostomia: A Review on Topical Treatments, Alternative Medicine, and Innovative Therapies

Background: Despite incidence rates and complications, the clinical management of xerostomia lacks guidelines. Aim: The aim of this overview is to summarize the clinical experience over the past 10 years of treating xerostomia using non-pharmacological interventions. Materials and Methods: A literature search was conducted across PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases, covering publications from 1 January 2013 to 30 January 2023. Results: Topical therapies are the mainstays in cases of longstanding oral dryness. Their aim is to relieve oral discomfort by retaining mouth moisture. Macro-molecular lubricants were largely used in xerostomia due to radiotherapy for Head and Neck cancer (HNC) and xerostomia due to the chronic use of drugs. However, none of them provided stable relief for dry mouth. Traditional Medicine (TM), through the administration of different medicinal herbs and plants, has recently been evaluated against xerostomia in clinical trials. Matricaria chamomilla L., Linum usitatissimum, and Malva sylvestris L. together with Althea digitata Boiss, Licorice root, and Salvia Officinalis are among the most used compounds. They were formulated as water extracts with health benefits that are attributed to the presence of polyphenols. However, the low number of clinical evaluations represents the greatest limitation for validating the efficacy of TM against xerostomia. Regarding acupuncture, it did not show significant effects in the trials in comparison to the control groups. Further, electrostimulation, photo-biomodulation and hyperbaric therapy need more randomized clinical evaluations to effectively demonstrate their ability to relieve dry mouth. Conclusions: No topical treatment has shown stable relief of xerostomia. Consequently, the management of xerostomia and its devastating complications remain a significant void in daily clinical practice. Full article

Background: The aim of this paper is to evaluate the impact on the quality of life of the treatment of nasal vestibule tumors by interventional radiotherapy (IRT-brachytherapy) through a patient reported outcome questionnaire. Methods: We prospectively collected data about patients undergoing IRT according to our institutional schedule of 44 Gy delivered in 14 fractions twice a day. We recorded both acute toxicity data, using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 5.0, and quality of life data, using the 22-item Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) at baseline (T0), at 1 month (T1), at 3 months (T3), and at 6 months (T6). Results: We enrolled 10 consecutive patients treated between February 2023 and October 2023. The decrease in terms of SNOT-22 mean value was statistically significant from T0 and T6 with a p-value < 0.001. A noteworthy clinical finding is that quality of life improved regardless of the occurrence of G1-G2 side effects. Conclusions: Using SNOT-22 on patients with nasal vestibule carcinoma treated with IRT has shown an improvement in quality of life that is not strictly dependent on the occurrence of expected G1-G2 side effects. Several synthetic food additives that bear an E-number are used by the meat industry as antioxidants/preservatives of cured meat products, such as pariza-type meat emulsion products. However, these agents have been associated with health problems, namely cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and potential carcinogenic effects. As a result, natural alternatives are constantly under evaluation with the intention of replacing/minimizing their applications in the meat industry. The aim of the present study was therefore to evaluate the effects of a natural citrus phenolic complex extract on the quality characteristics of pariza-type meat emulsion products. The following three batches of pariza were produced based on the same raw material and recipe: a control group without natural antioxidants and two groups with the addition of the polyphenol complex at the levels of 500 and 1000 ppm. The pH, color, tenderness, and oxidative stability of the meat products were assessed immediately after pariza manufacture (day 0), and 30 and 72 days after the start of its refrigerated storage. As indicated, the oxidative stability of pariza was improved as a result of the natural polyphenol complex addition, since the values of malondialdehyde (MDA), an index of lipid peroxidation, were linearly decreased. Parameters such as pH, lightness (L), and yellowness (b*) were linearly increased, while redness (a*) was linearly decreased, and tenderness was not significantly influenced in the treatment groups compared to the control group. It can be concluded that the natural polyphenol complex under examination can be utilized for the improvement of oxidative stability in pariza. Full article

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms presenting unique challenges in diagnosis and management. Traditional markers such as chromogranin A (CgA), pancreatic polypeptide (PP), and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) have limitations in terms of specificity and sensitivity. Specific circulating markers such as serotonin and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and various gastrointestinal hormones such as gastrin, glucagon, somatostatin, and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) have a role in identifying functional NENs. Recent advances in molecular and biochemical markers, also accounting for novel genomic and proteomic markers, have significantly improved the landscape for the diagnosis and monitoring of NENs. This review discusses these developments, focusing on both traditional markers such as CgA and NSE, as well as specific hormones like gastrin, insulin, somatostatin, glucagon, and VIP. Additionally, it covers emerging genomic and proteomic markers that are shaping current research. The clinical applicability of these markers is highlighted, and their role in improving diagnostic accuracy, predicting surgical outcomes, and monitoring response to treatment is demonstrated. The review also highlights the need for further research, including validation of these markers in larger studies, development of standardized assays, and integration with imaging techniques. The evolving field of biochemical markers holds promise for improving patient outcomes in the treatment of NENs, although challenges in standardization and validation remain. Full article
