Nature-based solutions (NbS) are widely considered cost-effective approaches for improving mental health in sustainable cities. However, how different ecological settings influence restorative outcomes is still not fully clear. This study examines whether mental recovery during forest-based meditation can be predicted from environmental conditions and physiological responses in real-world settings. Twenty-four healthy adults were assigned to one of three forest environments and completed three repeated meditation sessions within the same condition, yielding 72 observations. Environmental indicators (temperature, humidity, PM2.5, CO2, illuminance, wind speed, and noise) and heart rate variability (HRV) metrics were recorded. A predictive modeling framework was applied to capture nonlinear interactions between ecological exposure and physiological responses. Subject-level separation was strictly enforced to prevent data leakage. The results indicate that restorative outcomes can be reliably estimated from ecological and physiological signals under the observed conditions. Environmental variables exhibited stronger predictive contributions than baseline physiological indicators. These findings suggest that restorative outcomes are structured by ecological context. Given the limited sample size (N = 24), the proposed framework should be interpreted as a proof-of-concept model rather than a fully generalizable solution. Repeated subject-level random splits yielded consistent predictive performance across data partitions, indicating the robustness of the model. Full article

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the performance of three tooth wear indices—BEWE, simplified TWI (sTWI), and TWES 2.0—based on the visual assessment of digital intraoral scans. A secondary exploratory objective was to examine unadjusted sex-stratified score distributions. Methods: This retrospective study included 246 anonymized intraoral scans obtained using Medit i700 and iTero Element 2 systems. All scans were independently evaluated by two calibrated examiners using the BEWE, simplified TWI (sTWI), and TWES 2.0 indices. Scoring was performed through visual assessment of the digital models, without applying automated measurements or software-assisted analysis tools. Unadjusted sex-stratified patterns were explored using mixed-effects linear models, with a significance threshold set at p < 0.05. Estimated marginal means were calculated, and graphical approaches, including heatmaps, were used to present score distributions and inter-examiner variability. Results: The indices exhibited different scoring characteristics. BEWE produced the most consistent sextant-based patterns, with low variability between examiners. TWES 2.0 showed generally stable scoring, although with slightly greater dispersion, particularly in posterior sextants. In contrast, sTWI demonstrated the highest variability and more pronounced surface-specific differences, especially on occlusal and palatal surfaces. Sex-stratified analyses indicated minor and inconsistent variations. Although isolated statistically significant findings were observed (BEWE Sextant 6; TWES 2.0 Sextant 5), they did not form a consistent or interpretable pattern. Conclusions: Assessment based on digital intraoral scans highlighted differences in scoring behavior depending on the index used. BEWE demonstrated the most stable scoring patterns, TWES 2.0 showed moderate consistency, while sTWI was associated with the greatest variability. Differences observed in sex-stratified analyses were minor and lacked consistency. Clinical significance: BEWE enables consistent scoring when applied to digital scans and may be appropriate for monitoring purposes. TWES 2.0 provides a structured approach to screening. The higher variability observed with sTWI indicates that caution is warranted when it is used exclusively on digital models. Overall, the choice of index has a substantial impact on the assessment of tooth wear in digital workflows. Full article

Background/Objectives: Less often employed as a rinsing solution for controlling oral biofilms, NaOCL was used in oral rinses at various concentrations in steps 1 and 4 of periodontal therapy. The aim of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the biofilm-disruptive properties of a 0.2% NaOCl solution in standardized oral rinses using dedicated plaque-disclosing agents and 3D scanning methods in patients undergoing the regular Guided Biofilm Therapy® protocol. Methods: Eight patients with at least 20 teeth present evenly distributed between the two arches were included. After 24 h of refraining from oral hygiene, dental arches were stained with a disclosing agent, the subjects rinsed for 20 s, clinical photographs and 3D scans were performed, subjects rinsed again for 20 s, photographs and 3D scans were performed again, and then the GBT® protocol was resumed as usual. Data representing areas covered with dental plaque were acquired using the “Medit Scan for Clinics” software and then underwent a post-processing and rendering process. The outcome variable was the percent reduction in the plaque-covered areas. Results: For the upper jaw, the estimated mean percent reduction in the biofilm-covered area was 39.65%, while for the mandible, it was 38.26%. The analysis of individual photographs revealed changes in the plaque-covered areas and reductions in the color intensity of the residual plaque-covered areas under identical lighting conditions. Conclusions: When analyzed using 3D intraoral scanning, the 0.2% NaOCl rinsing solution seems to be a clinically efficient disruptor/dissolvent of the oral biofilm, both when integrated into modern protocols of periodontal therapy like GBT® and for home self-care. Background/Objectives: Meditation induces changes in the nervous system, which presumably underpin positive psychological and physiological effects. Such neural changes include alterations in the arousal fluctuation, as well as in infraslow brain activity (ISA, <0.1 Hz). Furthermore, it is known that fluctuations of arousal over time correlate with the oscillatory phase of ISA. However, whether this arousal–ISA correlation changes after meditation practices remains unanswered.; Methods: The present study aims to address this question by analyzing a publicly available electroencephalogram (EEG) dataset recorded during meditation sessions in the groups of experienced meditators and novices. The arousal fluctuation is measured by galvanic skin responses (GSR), and arousal–ISA correlations are measured by phase synchronization between GSR and EEG ISAs.; Results: While both groups exhibit arousal–ISA correlations, experienced meditators display higher correlations than novices. These increased arousal–ISA correlations in experienced meditators manifest more clearly when oscillatory phase differences between GSR and EEG ISAs are either 0 or π radians. As such, we further investigate the characteristics of these phase differences with respect to spatial distribution over the brain. We found that brain regions with the phase difference of either 0 or π radians form distinct spatial clusters, and that these clusters are spatially correlated with functional organization estimated by the principal gradient, based on functional connectivity.; Conclusions: Since increased arousal–ISA correlations reflect enhanced global organization of the central and autonomic nervous systems, our findings imply that the positive effects of meditation might be mediated by enhanced global organization of the nervous system. Despite the high diversity of elasmobranch fishes in the Balearic Islands, knowledge of their biology and population dynamics is still scarce. A recent mark-and-recapture experiment off the Balearic Islands tagged 3738 individuals of 23 shark and batoid species during MEDITS and CANAL bottom trawl scientific surveys from June 2021 to August 2023. Retrieval was reported for the sharks Scyliorhinus canicula and Mustelus mustelus, revealing relatively small home ranges for these species (0.2–38.5 km and 7.8–15.3 km for S. canicula and M. mustelus, respectively). Recapture efficiency was higher from scientific surveys than from commercial catches, highlighting potential challenges in collaboration with fishermen and recapture reports. Density estimates obtained from the MEDITS bottom trawl survey suggest a much larger population for S. canicula than estimates from the mark–recapture data, indicating MEDITS density estimates for this species may be overestimated due to its scavenger behavior perhaps favoring individuals searching for discards aggregated in the fishing grounds. This study emphasizes the importance of monitoring, collaborative efforts, and improved reporting mechanisms to enhance our understanding of elasmobranch populations and provide support for sustainable management of these vulnerable marine species. While research on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for the general population is expanding, there remains a scarcity of studies investigating the efficacy and utilisation of CAM practices, specifically in the paediatric population. In accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO), the prevalence of the parental utilisation of CAM in their dependents is estimated to reach up to 80%. This literature review identified broad, heterogeneous, and inconclusive evidence regarding CAM’s applications and effectiveness, primarily attributed to variance in sociodemographic factors and differences in national healthcare systems. Additionally, the review identified a lack of consensus and polarised positions among mainstream professionals regarding the mechanisms of action, applications, and effectiveness of CAM. This narrative review presents varied results concerning the efficacy of most CAM therapies and their applications; however, some evidence suggests potential benefits for acupuncture, yoga, tai chi, and massage in improving physical and mental health. Moreover, the available evidence indicates that meditation may enhance mental health, while reiki may only influence patients’ perceptions of comfort. In light of the intricate and multifaceted nature of herbal medicine, it is imperative to assess its efficacy on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the specific compounds and procedures involved. This comprehensive review serves as a valuable resource for health professionals, offering guidance for personalised healthcare approaches that consider the values and beliefs of patients, thereby facilitating integrated, evidence-based practices aimed at enhancing the quality of healthcare services and patient satisfaction. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated various determinants of mental disorders. Several behavioral changes were observed given this increase, including harmful health consequences, such as excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). To assess this relationship, we investigated the meditational role of symptoms of mental disorders (anxiety and depression) in the association between stress resulting from social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic and the consumption of UPFs in 3884 Brazilian public employees in a supplementary study of the ELSA-Brasil study. Structural equation models (SEMs) were estimated to assess the direct and indirect effects mediated by symptoms of mental disorders. The results suggested a significant and positive mediational effect of the symptoms of mental disorders on the association between the stress resulting from social distancing and the consumption of UPFs. These findings contribute to informing the need for policies and early interventions in potentially stressful situations, with a focus on the promotion of mental health, and may thus help prevent or reduce the consumption of unhealthy foods. Fisheries management requires the best scientific knowledge on the exploitation and conservation status of stocks. This is challenging for by-catch species, for which necessary data for their assessment is more limited than for target ones. That is the case for the thornback ray, Raja clavata, in the Balearic Islands (western Mediterranean), whose exploitation and conservation status are addressed here for the first time, in an integrative approach, by using innovative assessment methods and genetic diversity analysis. The time series of fishing landings from 1964 and MEDITS trawl survey data from 2004 were used to apply CMSY++ and Bayesian state-space Schaefer production models. We also estimated the genetic diversity of the Cytochrome C Oxidase subunit I mitochondrial gene from 31 individuals collected during MEDITS surveys. The species showed overexploitation with a current fishing mortality (F) below that producing maximum sustainable yield (FMSY), but with a current stock biomass (B) lower than BMSY. Despite the fact that the exploitation status is stable or even has improved in the last decades, the overexploitation period since the late 1970s seems to have reduced levels of genetic diversity, below those of related species and other populations of R. clavata. This low genetic diversity may entail the loss of adaptive potential, making the species more vulnerable to fishing and the current climate change. Full article

This study investigated the effects of non-pharmacological interventions on sleep in older people through a systematic review and meta-analysis. We conducted a literature search using eight electronic databases according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol. Participant characteristics, the contents of the evaluated interventions, and the measured outcomes were systematically reviewed for 15 selected studies. We performed a meta-analysis to estimate the effect size for overall, aggregated sleep outcomes. Due to the small number of studies available for each intervention, only the overall effectiveness of non-pharmacological sleep interventions was evaluated. The evaluated interventions included exercise, aromatherapy, acupressure, cognitive behavior therapy, and meditation. Our results demonstrated that non-pharmacological interventions showed statistically significant effects on sleep (effect size = 1.00, 95% confidence interval: 0.16, 1.85, I2 = 92%, p < 0.001). After confirming publication bias and removing outliers, we found no heterogeneity (I2 = 17%, p = 0.298), with a decrease in effect size to 0.70 (95% confidence interval: 0.47, 0.93). Non-pharmacological interventions are effective for improving sleep in older adults. Future studies should continue to investigate sleep problems and interventions addressing these problems in this demographic, particularly in older women. Objective measures should be used to follow-up on the evaluated sleep interventions over the long term. Full article

Sleep of inadequate quantity and quality is increasing in the present 24 h society, with a negative impact on physical and mental health. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) generate a state of calm behavior that can reduce hyperactivity and improve sleep. We hypothesized that our specific MBI, administered online, may improve sleep quality and foster emotion regulation and mindfulness. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Sleep Condition Indicator (SCI), Arousal Predisposition Scale (APS), Ford Insomnia Response to Stress Test (FIRST), Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) were used to measure sleep quality and stability. Emotion regulation and mindfulness were measured via the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) and Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ). Our MBI included 12 biweekly integral meditation (IM) classes, recorded IM training for individual practice, and dietary advice to promote sleep regulation. Fifty-six voluntary poor sleepers with a PSQI score of >5 were randomly allocated to treated (n = 28) and control (n = 28) groups. Linear mixed models were used to estimate the effectiveness of the intervention. Statistically significant results were observed in the FFMQ sub-domain non-reactivity to inner experience (β = 0.29 [0.06; −0.52], p = 0.01), PSQI (β = −1.93 [−3.43; −0.43], p = 0.01), SCI (β = 3.39 [0.66; 6.13], p = 0.02) and ISI (β = −3.50 [−5.86; −1.14], p = 0.004). These results confirm our hypothesis regarding the beneficial effects of our intervention on sleep quality. Full article

Background and Objectives: CDC data indicate that the U.S. is experiencing a sustained epidemic of drug-related mortality, with such deaths exceeding a record 100,000 in 2021, up 47% from 2019. Opioids, especially the synthetic opioid fentanyl, account for approximately 75% of this mortality. This study evaluates a proposed Consciousness-Based® approach that may possibly help reduce trends in drug-related fatalities by mitigating what WHO refers to as an “epidemic of stress” in society that helps fuel drug misuse and other negative public health trends. This approach involves providing support in public and private sector public health initiatives for individual and group practice of a subjective, evidence-based meditation procedure suitable for those of all educational, cultural, and religious backgrounds: the Transcendental Meditation® (TM®) technique and its advanced aspect, the TM-Sidhi® program. Materials and Methods: Segmented-trend regression analysis of monthly CDC data on U.S. drug-related fatality rates (dfr) from a prospective social experiment (2002–2016) was used to replicate and extend prior peer-reviewed research. Results: As hypothesized, (1) practice of the TM and TM-Sidhi program by a group of theoretically predicted size (√1% of the U.S. population) was associated with a statistically and practically significant reduction in dfr trend during the five-year “demonstration period” of the quasi-experiment; and (2) monthly dfr trend subsequently increased during the five-year follow-up period when the group fell below the required size (both p’s < 0.0001). The estimated total percent decrease in dfr during the demonstration period was 35.5%, calculated relative to the baseline mean. This decline was followed by total dfr increases of 11.8% and 47.4% relative to the demonstration-period mean during the two phases of the follow-up period. Conclusion: Existing evidence warrants implementation and further evaluation of this approach in U.S. public health initiatives. Full article

Yoga is an embodied contemplative practice considered as a path toward long-term well-being, which fosters an integrated processing of bodily and emotional stimuli. However, little is known about how the different components of yoga contribute to these processes. This was the aim of this single-case multiple-baseline study. Herein, we explored how different yoga components affect body awareness, emotion regulation, affectivity, self-compassion, and distress tolerance. Forty-two randomly assigned participants (from initially fifty-seven) completed one of four 8-week treatments: Mantra meditation alone (MA), meditation plus physical yoga (MY), meditation plus ethical education (ME), and meditation plus yoga and ethical education (MYE). Participants had no prior regular yoga or meditation practice. Data were analyzed using visual inspection, effect size estimation, and multilevel modeling. Surprisingly, all four treatments similarly improved body awareness (Tau-UMA = 0.21 to Tau-UMY = 0.49), emotion regulation (Tau-UMYE = −0.43 to Tau-UME = −0.52), self-compassion (η2 = 0.08), and distress tolerance (η2 = 0.13). These effects were maintained until follow-up at 2 and 12 months after the study, even though home practice declined. The MA condition had the least favorable effect on affective experience (Tau-UMA = −0.14 and 0.07), while the ME condition enhanced valence the most (Tau-UME = 0.10) and the MY condition was the most effective in preventing negative affective responses. Although mantra meditation on its own negatively influenced daily affect, it can be assumed as the driving force behind the improvement in the other variables. This points to the central role of meditation in increasing interoception, self-awareness, and embodied processing. Full article

Mind–Body Medicine (MBM) includes a broad range of interventions with proven preventive and clinical value, such as yoga and meditation. However, people differ in their preferences and response to different MBM treatments and it remains unclear who benefits most from what type of practice. Thus, finding moderators of treatment outcome seems to be a promising approach. This was the aim of the present study. We conducted a single-case multiple-baseline study investigating the outcomes and moderators of four different MBM treatments. Fifty-seven healthy participants with no prior experience were randomly assigned to three baselines (7, 14, and 21 days) and four eight-week treatments: mantra meditation alone, meditation plus physical yoga, meditation plus ethical education and meditation plus yoga and ethical education. We analysed the data using effect size estimation, multiple regression and cluster analyses. High anxiety, high absorption, low spirituality, low openness and younger age were associated with a range of positive outcomes, such as increased wellbeing or decentering and decreased mind wandering. Receiving ethical education consistently improved wellbeing, while engaging in physical yoga reduced mind wandering. In the cluster analysis, we found that participants with a more maladaptive personality structure enhanced their emotion regulation skills more. Consequently, people do differ in their response to MBM interventions and more vulnerable people, or those high in absorption, seem to benefit more. These findings could support the development of custom-tailored MBM interventions and help clinicians to make scientifically sound recommendations for their patients. Full article

Neurophysiological Effects of a Singing Bowl Massage

Background and Objectives: In recent years, singing bowl sound interventions have been progressively implemented in the fields of well-being, therapy and education; however, the effectiveness has only scarcely been investigated. Therefore, this study was aimed at determining neurophysiological effects of a singing bowl massage. Materials and Methods: In this prospective cohort study 64-channel EEG, ECG and respiration was recorded from 34 participants (mean age 36.03 ± 13.43 years, 24 females/10 males) before, during and after a professional singing bowl massage. Further, subjective changes in well-being were assessed. EEG data were analyzed by determining the effect sizes of distinct frequency bands. Significant differences were calculated by a two-tailed t-test corrected for multiple comparisons. Heart rate variability metrics, heart rate and respiration rate were estimated and compared. Results: Overall EEG power decreased during the sound condition compared to a task-free resting state (d = −0.30, p = 0.002). After the intervention, global EEG power was further reduced (d = −0.46, p < 0.001), revealing a decrease in the beta 2 (d = −0.15, p = 0.002) and the gamma frequency band (d = −0.21, p = 0.004). The mean heart rate was significantly lower after the intervention (75.5 ± 19.8 vs. 71.5 ± 17.9, p < 0.001) and the respiration rate higher (13.5 ± 5.3 vs. 15.2 ± 6.3, p = 0.018). 91.2% of the participants felt more integrated, 97.1% more balanced and 76.5% more vitalized. Conclusions: The neurophysiological effects of a singing bowl sound massage may be interpreted as a shift towards a more mindful, meditative state of consciousness. The intervention was perceived as beneficial for the wellbeing. Full article

Multicomponent cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a secondary prevention strategy for cardiac patients to tackle stress and psychosocial wellbeing. However, there is a lack of data on its psychoneuroimmunological effects and of biomarkers to determine individual risk and to develop treatment strategies. We conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) to investigate the feasibility of deriving psychophysiological stress markers in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Thirty individuals with cardiovascular disease (mean age 58.8 years; 23.3% female) were enrolled and randomized into three treatment groups: standard rehabilitation, yoga, or transcendental meditation (TM). Depression, anxiety, sleep, stress perception, personality functioning, hair cortisol, serum tryptophan, kynurenine and neopterin concentrations were estimated at baseline and after a four-week intervention. Hair cortisol levels decreased significantly after rehabilitation in all groups (F = 15.98, p < 0.001). In addition, personality functioning improved in all patients over time. Participants with impairments in personality functioning showed a positive correlation with baseline neopterin that did not remain significant after Bonferroni correction. Concentrations of serum tryptophan and its metabolite kynurenine did not change significantly. This pilot RCT provides preliminary evidence of multicomponent CR leading to stabilization of hair cortisol levels and improved psychophysiological wellbeing and personality functioning. Impairments in personality functioning were correlated with neopterin levels, which may impact the symptomatology and outcome. Full article
