Water-lubricated bearings (WLB), due to their pollution-free nature and low noise, are increasingly becoming critical components in aerospace, marine applications, high-speed railway transportation, precision machine tools, etc. However, in practice, water-lubricated bearings suffer severe friction and wear due to low-viscosity water, harsh conditions, and contaminants like sediment, which can compromise the lubricating film and shorten their lifespan. The implementation of micro-textures has been demonstrated to improve the tribological performance of water-lubricated bearings to a certain extent, leading to their widespread adoption for enhancing the frictional dynamics of sliding bearings. The shape, dimensions (including length, width, and depth), and distribution of these micro-textures have a significant influence on the frictional performance. Therefore, this study aims to explore the coupling effect of different micro-texture shapes and distributions on the frictional performance of water-lubricated sliding, using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The results indicate that strategically arranging textures across multiple regions can enhance the performance of the bearing. Specifically, placing linear groove textures in the outlet of the divergent zone and triangular textures in the divergent zone body maximize improvements in the load-carrying capacity and frictional performance. This specific configuration increases the load-carrying capacity by 7.3% and reduces the friction coefficient by 8.6%. Overall, this study provided critical theoretical and technical insights for the optimization of WLB, contributing to the advancement of clean energy technologies and the extension of critical bearing service life. Both biosystems and engineering fields demand advanced friction-reducing and lubricating materials. Due to their hydrophilicity and tissue-mimicking properties, hydrogels are ideal candidates for use as lubricants in water-based environments. They are particularly well-suited for applications involving biocompatibility or interactions with intelligent devices such as soft robots. However, external environments, whether within the human body or in engineering applications, often present a wide range of dynamic conditions, including variations in shear stress, temperature, light, pH, and electric fields. Additionally, hydrogels inherently possess low mechanical strength, and their dimensional stability can be compromised by changes during hydration. This review focuses on recent advancements in using environmentally responsive hydrogels as lubricants. It explores strategies involving physical or structural modifications, as well as the incorporation of smart chemical functional groups into hydrogel polymer chains, which enable diverse responsive mechanisms. Drawing on both the existing literature and our own research, we also examine how composite friction materials where hydrogels serve as water-based lubricants offer promising solutions for demanding engineering environments, such as bearing systems in marine vessels. The marine water-lubricated bearing’s (WLBs) dynamic properties are essential for ensuring the shaft system’s operational dependability. The coupled model of mixed lubrication and turbulence under the impact of bidirectional misalignment is proposed in this research, and the perturbation equations of marine WLBs with 32 coefficients are derived. The finite difference method (FDM) is used to solve the steady-state and perturbation equations, and the impacts of turbulence, bearing bush deformation, surface roughness, and bidirectional shaft misalignment on the dynamic characteristics of the WLBs are systematically investigated. The results reveal that under mixed lubrication, surface roughness and the turbulence effect can both greatly improve the stiffness and damping of the bearings, but that there is a threshold phenomenon for the turbulence effect’s influence on these properties. Neglecting the elastic deformation of the bush may lead to an overestimation of the bearings’ stiffness and damping, causing substantial inaccuracies in conditions of heavy load or declined Young’s modulus. The 32 coefficients of the WLB exhibit considerable variation with the misalignment angle; hence, a more comprehensive dynamic model should be developed for misaligned marine WLBs. The study’s findings provide valuable insights for rotor dynamics research and optimal design of lubrication performance in marine WLBs. Full article

Contrary to conventional journal bearings, which operate using oil-based substances, water-lubricated bearings (WLBs) utilize water and, thus, constitute a more environmentally responsible solution. The shipping industry, among others, as already been introduced to this technology with a lot of commercial ships using water-lubricated stern tube systems; in other cases, hydropower plants manage to keep up with the strict environmental regulations by implementing the use of WLBs in water turbines. However, there are a lot of challenges when it comes to transitioning from conventional bearings to water-based ones. Such challenges are caused by the low viscosity of water and lead to phenomena of high complexity. Such phenomena are related but not limited to cavitation and turbulent flow due to the interaction between the lubricating water and bearing surface. In this study, a numerical method will be used to simulate the fluid film and bearing geometries in order to perform a thermo-elastohydrodynamic (TEHD) analysis. The dynamic characteristics of the bearing will be calculated and the results will be discussed. The novelty of the study is evident in but not limited to the determination of the elastic deformation of a WLB during operation, as well as the effect of surface roughness, cavitation, and thermal effects on bearing characteristics. In order to study the influence of water-lubricated bearings on the vibration of the marine magnetic pump, the vibration characteristics of the marine magnetic pump under different flow rates and bearing structural parameters (bearing clearance, eccentricity, and length–diameter ratio) were numerically analyzed. The internal flow fields of marine magnetic pumps and water-lubricated bearing were numerically calculated, and experimental verification of their external characteristics results was conducted. The results show that the vibration velocity level of the pump increases with the increase in the bearing clearance and the bearing eccentricity, and the vibration velocity level of the pump gradually decreases with the increase in the bearing length–diameter ratio. The clearance has the greatest influence on the vibration of the pump, the length–diameter ratio the second, and the eccentricity the smallest. The peak value of vibration velocity at the pump outlet at the vibration measurement point is the highest, the peak value of vibration velocity at the pump inlet is second, and the peak value of vibration velocity at the pump foot is the smallest. However, the peak value of vibration velocity at the pump inlet is most sensitive to changes in operating conditions and bearing structural parameters, with a maximum increase of 6.2 dB. Therefore, the change in the peak value of vibration velocity at the pump inlet can be used as the main indicator for monitoring the operating status of bearings. Full article

Water-lubricated bearings are widely used in marine equipment, and the lubricating water often contains hard particles. Once these particles enter the gap between the bearing and the shaft, they can scratch the smooth surfaces of the shaft and bearing, influencing the working performance of the bearing system. To investigate the effect of scratch parameters on tribological performance, this paper conducts multiple block-on-ring experiments and constructs a mixed-lubrication model under water-lubrication conditions. The results show that among the three commonly used bearing materials, the tribological performance of graphite block is the most sensitive to scratches on the test ring surface. Under the condition of one scratch (N = 1), the loading area of water film pressure is divided into two separate zones (a trapezoidal pressure zone and an extremely low-pressure zone). In addition, the variation of maximum water film pressure is determined by the positive effect (hydrodynamic pressure effect of fluid) and negative effect (“piercing effect” of the asperities). Compared with the scratch depth and scratch location, the scratch width has the most significant effect on the tribological performance of the block-on-ring system. The maximum contact pressure is located at both edges of the scratch due to the formation of a water sac structure. The scratch has a great influence on the transition of the lubrication state of the block-on-ring system. The existence of scratches increases the critical speed at which the lubrication state transits from mixed-lubrication to elastohydrodynamic lubrication, and the critical speed is directly proportional to the scratch width. Under low speed and heavy load operating conditions, the marine water-lubricated bearing (WLB) is often in a mixed lubrication state. This leads to abnormal friction-induced vibrations and noise in underwater vehicles. An empirical mode decomposition (EMD) based method for identifying friction-induced vibration characteristics of WLB was proposed, and friction-induced vibration experiments of WLB were carried out. The results showed that the specific pressure and lubricant temperature significantly affected friction-induced vibrations while the cooling water flow hardly had an effect. Studying the monotonicity of the eigenvalues of IMF energy, time-domain standard deviation, bias angle, and center of gravity frequency can visualize the trend of the bearing friction-induced vibration signals. Among them, the critical point of friction-induced vibrations could be analyzed by the inflection point of IMF energy, standard deviation, bias angle, and the sudden increase of the center of gravity frequency. The study results were valuable for revealing the friction-induced vibration mechanism of WLB and providing an important reference for design optimization. Full article

Marine water-lubricated polymer bearings support the propeller shaft that stretches out of the ship. The bending deformation of propeller shaft often leads to journal misalignment, significantly impacting the bearing performance. In this paper, a mixed lubrication model for water-lubricated polymer bearing is established considering the effect of journal misalignment, liner elastic deformation, and local turbulence. The influence of key structural and operating parameters on the performance of water-lubricated bearing with journal misalignment is investigated. The results show that the journal misalignment significantly reduces the load-carrying capacity, deteriorates the bearing tribological characteristics, and may cause different axial sections of the bearing to be in different lubrication regimes. Compared with aligned bearings, increasing the length–diameter ratio to improve the load-carrying capacity is significantly weakened for misaligned bearings. Increasing the liner thickness and the load improves axial uniformity of pressure distribution of misaligned bearings. A relatively large clearance ratio decreases the load-carrying capacity and increases the friction coefficient of bearings in the mixed lubrication regime. Full article

Water lubrication has been widely used in marine equipment, where rubber bearings and seals suffer intense friction and severe wear under mixed and boundary conditions. It has good research prospects and practical value to study the composite of amorphous carbon on water lubrication rubber to improve lubrication and reduce wear. In this work, modified graphite-like carbon films incorporated with titanium and nitrogen ((Ti:N)-GLC) were integrated on nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) with multi-target magnetron sputtering. Direct current (DC) sputtering of graphite target was used as the carbon source. The incorporation of Ti and N elements was accomplished by using radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering of three different targets: Ti, TiC and TiN, to optimize the mechanical and tribological performance. This work is aimed to clarify the modification mechanism of Ti and N incorporation and obtain the optimum scheme. The influence of RF power on surface topography, chemical composition, mechanical properties and tribological properties was investigated by SEM, XPS, Raman spectra, nanoindentor and tribometer. The consequences revealed that the characteristics of films depend on RF target types and power. For the Ti-C and TiC-C series, when RF power is 100 W and below, with low content of Ti (6 at.%~13 at.%) and N (around 10 at.%), the incorporation of Ti and N optimizes the surface topology, improves the mechanical properties and maintains excellent adhesion to NBR substrate. The tribological and wear behaviors of (Ti:N)-GLC films are better than GLC films under mixed and boundary lubrication. When RF power grows to 200 W, the dopants result in the deterioration of surface and mechanical properties, followed by worse lubrication and wear behaviors. For TiN-C series, the incorporation of TiN takes no advantage over GLC films, even worse in the case of high RF power. Overall, the incorporation of Ti or TiC by magnetron sputtering in Ar/N2 atmosphere is an effective modification method for GLC films on NBR to improve mechanical and tribological behaviors. The polymer water-lubricated bearing is widely used in marine transmission systems, and the tribological properties can be improved by addition of inorganic nano-fillers. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of SCFs and temperature on the water-lubricating properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites. HDPE composites reinforced by varying content of short carbon fibers (SCFs) were fabricated via twin-screw extrusion and injection molding techniques to study the hardness and surface wettability of those composites. The tribological properties under water-lubricated conditions were investigated through a pin-on-disk reciprocating tribometer under different temperatures. The results showed that the increase in hardness of HDPE composites reached maximum to 42.9% after adding 25 wt % SCFs. The contact angle also increased with the increase in SCFs content and reached a maximum of 95.2° as the amount of SCFs increased to 20 wt %. The incorporation of SCFs increased the wear resistance and lubricating property of HDPE composites at different temperatures. The HDPE composite containing 20 wt % SCFs showed the lowest friction coefficient of 0.076 at 40 °C, and the wear track depth reached a maximum of 36.3 mm at 60 °C. Based on the surface wetting property and wear analysis, potential effect mechanisms of fillers and temperature were discussed.
