This study investigates the influence of corporate governance on reducing financial statement fraud (FSF) in Jordanian service and industrial companies listed on the Amman Stock Exchange from 2018 to 2022. To achieve this, the study employed the Beneish M-score model to assess the likelihood of FSF and logistic regression to examine the influence of corporate governance structure on fraud mitigation. The study identified 13 independent variables, including board size, board director’s independence, board director’s compensation, non-duality of CEO and chairman positions, board diversity, audit committee size, audit committee accounting background, number of annual audit committee meetings, external audit fees, board family business, the presence of women on the board of directors, firm size, and market listing on FSF. The study included 74 companies from both sectors—33 from the industrial sector and 41 from the service sector. Primary data was collected from financial statements and other information published in annual reports between 2018 and 2022. The results of the study revealed a total of 295 cases of fraud during the examined period. Out of the 59 companies analyzed, 21.4% demonstrated a low probability of fraud, while the remaining 78.6% (232 observations) showed a high probability of fraud. The results indicate that the following corporate governance factors significantly impact the mitigation of financial statement fraud (FSF): independent board directors, board diversity, audit committee accounting backgrounds, the number of audit committee meetings, family business involvement on the board, and firm characteristics. The study provides several recommendations, highlighting the importance for companies to diversify their boards of directors by incorporating different perspectives and experiences. Full article

Civil aviation safety remains a critical concern globally, with continuous efforts aimed at reducing accidents and fatalities. This paper focuses on the comprehensive evaluation of civil aviation safety in the Slovak Republic over the past several years, with the main objective of identifying prevailing trends and key risk factors. A comprehensive analysis of 155 accidents and incidents was conducted based on selected operational parameters. Logistic regression was applied to identify potential causal factors influencing various levels of injury severity in aviation accidents. Moreover, the prediction model can also be used to predict the probability of specific injury severity for accidents with given parameter values. The results indicate a clear declining trend in the annual number of aviation safety events; however, the fatality rate has stagnated or slightly increased in recent years. Human error, particularly mistakes and intentional violations of procedures, was identified as the dominant causal factor across all sectors of civil aviation, including flight operations, airport management, maintenance, and air navigation services. Despite technological advancements and regulatory improvements, human-related failures persist as a major safety challenge. The findings highlight the critical need for targeted strategies to mitigate human error and enhance overall aviation safety in the Slovak Republic. Full article

Due to the recent significant increase in the scale of both domestic and international cargo transportation, the transport sector is becoming an important factor in the country’s economic development. This implies the need to improve all links in the cargo transportation chain. A key role in it is played by logistics centers, which in their activities must meet both state (CO2 emissions, reduction in road load, increase in transportation safety, etc.) and commercial (cargo transportation in the shortest time and at the lowest cost) requirements. The objective of the paper is freight transportation from China to European countries, reflecting issues of CO2 emissions, reduction in road load, and increase in transportation safety. Transport operations from the manufacturer to the logistics center are especially important in this chain, since the efficiency of transportation largely depends on the decisions made by its employees. They select the appropriate types of transport (air, sea, rail, and road transport) and routes for a specific situation. In methodology, the analyzed problem can be presented as a dynamic multi-criteria decision model. It is assumed that the decision-maker—the manager responsible for planning transportation operations—is interested in achieving three basic goals: financial goal minimizing total delivery costs from factories to the logistics center, environmental goal minimizing the negative impact of supply chain operations on the environment, and high level of customer service goal minimizing delivery times from factories to the logistics center. The proposed methodology allows one to reduce the total carbon dioxide emission by 1.1 percent and the average duration of cargo transportation by 1.47 percent. On the other hand, the total cost of their delivery increases by 1.25 percent. By combining these, it is possible to create optimal transportation options, effectively use vehicles, reduce air pollution, and increase the quality of customer service. All this would significantly contribute to the country’s socio-economic development. It is proposed to solve this complex problem based on a dynamic multi-criteria model. In this paper, the problem of constructing a schedule of transport operations from factories to a logistics center is considered. The analyzed problem can be presented as a dynamic multi-criteria decision model. Linear programming and the AHP method were used to solve it. Full article

Modern logistics requires effective solutions for the optimization of intermodal transportation, providing cost reduction and improvement of transport flows. This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization method for intermodal freight transportation planning within the framework of sustainable service network design. The approach aims to balance economic efficiency and environmental sustainability by minimizing both transportation costs and delivery time. A bi-criteria mathematical model is developed and solved using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III (NSGA-III), which is well-suited for handling complex, large-scale optimization problems under multiple constraints. The aim of the study is to develop and implement this technology that balances economic efficiency, environmental sustainability and manageability of operational processes. The research includes the development of a two-criteria model that takes into account both temporal and economic parameters of the routes. The optimization method employs the NSGA-III, a well-known metaheuristic that generates a diverse set of near-optimal Pareto-efficient solutions. This enables the selection of trade-off alternatives depending on the decision-maker’s preferences and specific operational constraints. Simulation results show that the implementation of the proposed technology can reduce the costs of intermodal operators by an average of 8% and the duration of transportation by up to 50% compared to traditional planning methods. In addition, the automation of the process contributes to a more rational use of resources, reducing carbon emissions and increasing the sustainability of transportation networks. This approach is in line with the principles of sustainable economic development, as it improves the efficiency of logistics operations, reduces pressure on infrastructure and minimizes the environmental impact of the transport sector. Route optimization and digitalization of transport processes can increase resource efficiency, improve freight flow management and contribute to the long-term stability of transport systems. The developed technology of automated planning of intermodal transportation is oriented to application in large-scale production systems, providing effective management of cargo flows within complex logistics chains. The proposed method supports the principles of sustainable development by providing a formal decision-making framework that balances transportation cost, delivery time and environmental objectives. Instead of optimizing for a single goal, the model enables the identification of efficient trade-offs between economic performance and ecological impact. Moreover, by generating multiple routing scenarios under varying operational constraints, the approach enhances the adaptability and robustness of freight transportation systems in dynamic and uncertain environments. Background: Economic logistics in fire and rescue services is a critical determinant of operational readiness, fiscal sustainability, and resilience to large-scale emergencies. Despite its strategic importance, logistics remains under-researched in Central and Eastern European contexts, where legacy governance structures and EU-funded modernization coexist with systemic inefficiencies. This study focuses on the Slovak Fire and Rescue Service (HaZZ) as a case to explore how economic logistics systems can be restructured for greater performance and value. Objective: The objective of this paper was to evaluate the structure, performance, and reform potential of the logistics system supporting HaZZ, with a focus on procurement efficiency, lifecycle costing, digital integration, and alignment with EU civil protection standards. Methods: A mixed-methods design was applied, comprising the following: (1) Institutional analysis of governance, budgeting, and legal mandates based on semi-structured expert interviews with HaZZ and the Ministry of Interior officers (n = 12); (2) comparative benchmarking with Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands; (3) financial analysis of national logistics expenditures (2019–2023) using Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) principles, completed with the visualization of cost trends and procurement price variance through original heat maps and time-series graphs. Results: The key findings are as follows: (1) HaZZ operates a formally centralized but practically fragmented logistics model across 51 district units, lacking national coordination mechanisms and digital infrastructure; (2) Maintenance costs have risen by 42% between 2019 and 2023 despite increasing capital investment due to insufficient lifecycle planning and asset heterogeneity; (3) Price variance for identical equipment categories across regions exceeds 30%, highlighting the inefficiencies in decentralized procurement; (4) Slovakia lacks a national Logistics Information System (LIS), unlike peer countries which have deployed integrated digital platforms (e.g., CELIS in the Czech Republic); (5) Benchmarking reveals high-impact practices in centralized procurement, lifecycle-based contracting, regional logistics hubs, and performance accountability—particularly in Austria and the Netherlands. Impacts: Four high-impact, feasible reforms were proposed: (1) Establishment of a centralized procurement framework; (2) national LIS deployment to unify inventory and asset tracking; (3) adoption of lifecycle-based and performance-based contracting models; (4) development of regional logistics hubs using underutilized infrastructure. This study is among the first to provide an integrated economic and institutional analysis of the Fire and Rescue Service logistics in a post-socialist EU member state. It offers a structured, transferable reform roadmap grounded in comparative evidence and adapted to Slovakia’s hybrid governance model. The research bridges gaps between modernization policy, procurement law, and digital public administration in the context of emergency services. Full article

Objectives: This study investigates the presence of crowding-in or crowding-out effects of long-term care insurance (LTCI) on older adults’ care in Korea. Additionally, it examines the influence of old-age income security and private systems, including private transfer income and private health insurance, on these effects. The analysis focuses on three aspects: family-provided care, private non-family care, and total care expenses. Methods: This study conducted logistic and linear regression. Logistic regression was used to examine the likelihood of receiving family-provided and private non-family care, while linear regression analyzed factors associated with total care expenditures. Results: The results reveal a crowding-in effect for family care, as greater utilization of public LTCI is positively associated with family-provided care. However, the relationship between public LTCI and private non-family care was not statistically significant, suggesting that the crowding-in effect on private care systems remains limited. Lastly, LTCI utilization was significantly associated with higher care expenditures. It is noteworthy that the current public LTCI in Korea has low coverage, resulting in insufficient care provision. Consequently, there is growing activity in the private care sector. Conclusions: These findings highlight the need for a more integrated approach to long-term care in Korea, balancing public, private, and family care resources. To achieve quality integrated long-term care for older people, policymakers should focus on expanding public LTCI coverage while fostering coordination between family caregivers and professional care services, ensuring a comprehensive and high-quality care system that meets the diverse needs of Korea’s aging population. Economic transformations in emerging countries have resulted in an increase in the volume of international travellers from diverse geographical regions. In the tourism sector, service providers must possess cultural competencies that foster a flexible and appropriate attitude, which in turn affects the perception of service. The present study aims to shed light on the motivational factors and cultural behaviours that influence intercultural empathy among staff working in the tourism sector in Quintana Roo. To this end, a comprehensive literature review has been conducted, during which the variables have been validated, and a quantitative study has been undertaken, employing multivariate analysis through a Multiple Correspondence Analysis and inferential statistics with an Ordinal Logistic Regression. The findings of this study demonstrate a positive correlation between motivation and cultural behaviour, which is contingent on experience and age, and its impact on empathy in understanding and meeting the diverse needs of tourists. Cultural motivation is defined as the interest in learning and interacting in multicultural situations, and its impact on behaviour is reflected in appropriate personal management for effective cultural interactions. The probabilities estimated by ordinal logistic regression models of consistently or predominantly exhibiting intercultural empathy increase with age and experience for the most significant variables obtained by the Multiple Correspondence Analysis. Background: This study aimed to assess patient satisfaction with the quality of healthcare services at selected public primary healthcare facilities in Almaty during the COVID-19 pandemic and to identify associated demographic and facility-related factors. Methods: A cross-sectional, quantitative study was conducted over a period of 6 months, from 30 June to 31 December 2021, through a web-based survey. An adapted questionnaire was employed to survey the respondents. In total, 1035 respondents participated in the study. To examine the relationship between demographic and facility characteristics and patient satisfaction, we utilized the proportional odds model for ordinal logistic regression. Results: A total of eight primary healthcare organizations from the public sector in Almaty participated in the survey. The analysis identified significant demographic predictors of patient satisfaction, such as marital status, social status, self-perceived health, and the use of online consultations. Among the facility-related factors, only the availability of a cross-ventilation system emerged as a significant predictor. Conclusions: This study provides evidence for the factors influencing patient satisfaction with primary healthcare services in Almaty during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both demographic characteristics and facility-level attributes were found to significantly affect satisfaction levels. These findings underscore the need for targeted structural and organizational improvements in primary healthcare settings, especially during public health emergencies. Addressing these gaps through infrastructural upgrades, enhanced preparedness, and the integration of patient-centered care models can help to bolster trust and resilience within Kazakhstan’s healthcare system. Industry 4.0, Sustainability, and the service sector are topics that have been explored little in the literature. Thus, this article aims to evaluate Sustainability 4.0 practices in service companies in Pernambuco, a state located in northeastern Brazil. The choice to investigate the connections between Industry 4.0 technologies and the adoption of sustainability practices in the service sector in Pernambuco, Brazil, is justified by the growing relevance of these areas for the economic and environmental development of the region. Pernambuco, with its significant industrial development and strong presence in the service sector, represents a fertile field for the implementation of innovative technologies. The service sector, although less explored in comparative studies with other sectors, offers numerous opportunities for the application of these technologies in favor of sustainability, from improving energy efficiency to optimizing logistics. This combination of local and sectoral factors makes the study relevant and urgent, in addition to filling a gap in the existing literature, contributing to the advancement of knowledge on the intersection between technological innovation and sustainable practices. Through the existing literature, it was possible to identify 27 impacts that technologies have on the sustainability of service companies. Thus, the survey method was used, with the application of a structured questionnaire based on the impacts found. Thus, a total of 22 responses were collected from companies in Pernambuco, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Kendall coefficient. Among the results obtained, it was found that the factors that had the greatest impact were more related to economic and environmental gains, while social factors were less evident. In addition, the analysis demonstrated that impacts such as the reduction in the use of materials, reduction of waste and costs, generation of less waste, and improvement in the quality of life at work were among the most relevant for companies. Therefore, the research contributes to expanding this line of studies, offers insights into Sustainability 4.0 practices in services, and promotes sustainable development in services, benefiting both academia and society. Comprehending the dynamics of risk spillover across the value chain is indispensable for effective risk management, especially amid increasing economic and geopolitical uncertainty. This study investigates the mechanics of risk transmission within the value chain of the Chinese hospitality industry by employing a Time-Varying Parameter Vector Autoregression (TVP-VAR) model using daily data from January 2015 to December 2023. Our research identifies key sub-sectors, such as hotel resort and luxury cruises, film and entertainment, malls and supermarkets, environmental and facilities services, air freight and logistics, and road transportation, as significant risk transmitters that affect the overall stability of the industry. Conversely, sectors such as restaurants, liquor and wine services, leisure services, and railway transport are designated as risk receivers. These results offer critical insights for stakeholders, emphasizing the necessity of comprehensive risk management strategies to reduce negative spillover effects, particularly in the context of economic shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical events like the Russia–Ukraine conflict. Increasing turnover intention among public employees in Korean public sector organizations endangers both organizational sustainability and public service quality. Although prior research highlights job stress, compensation systems, and organizational culture as key drivers of turnover, scholars in limited empirical studies directly examine the role of public service motivation. In this study, we address this gap by investigating whether public service motivation reduces turnover intention and how perceived organizational politics may moderate this relationship. Using survey data from the 2023 Korean Public Employee Viewpoints Survey—conducted by the Korea Institute of Public Administration and including responses from central and local government employees—we employ stereotype logistic regression for analysis. Results show that public service motivation significantly lowers turnover intention, but its positive effect diminishes when employees perceive high levels of organizational politics. When employees believe that power and resources are distributed based on political interests rather than merit, they experience diminished reciprocity toward their organization. As a result, their intention to leave the organization increases. These findings underscore the need to sustain and enhance public service motivation while mitigating perceived organizational politics. Enhancing fairness, transparency, and trust—while reducing political interference—can preserve public service motivation’s positive impact and reduce turnover intention within public sector organizations. This article examines the relationship between implementing sustainable development measures and financial risk in the context of global companies and the recycling economy. This study uses statistics from Forbes, TIME, and Statista on 50 global companies that actively embrace sustainable development and recycling-economy practices across various industries. As a result, we have compiled a Structural Equation Model (SEM), with the help of which we established that growth in the activity of their implementing the measures of sustainable development and the recycling economy by each 1 point leads to a reduction in the risk of a shortfall in global companies’ profit by USD 0.0741 billion and the risk of ousting global companies from the market by USD 1.8374 billion. It has also been revealed that a reduction in the risk of the shortfall in profit by each USD 1 billion is accompanied by an increase in the activity of global companies’ implementing the measures of sustainable development and the recycling economy by 0.3433 points, and a reduction in the risk of market displacement by each USD 1 billion is accompanied by a growth in this activity by 0.0073 points. The theoretical novelty of the research consists of substantiating the differences in the consequences of the development of the recycling economy for financial risks of companies from different sectors. Practical implications of the proposed recommendations for companies in different industries are that the authors’ recommendations for the development of the recycling economy will allow for systemic reduction in financial risks in the sectors “Automotive Industry & Suppliers”, “Banking, Insurance & Financial Services”, “Chemicals, Drugs & Biotechnology”, and “Retail, Wholesale & Consumer Goods”. We have also revealed the threat of growth of all financial risks in the course of the development of the recycling economy in the sphere “Transportation, Logistics & Aviation”. In “Electronics, Hardware & Equipment” and “Manufacturing & Industrial Production”, the implications are differentiated among financial risks, which require flexibility and care during the development of the recycling economy. We find that global companies’ implementation of sustainable development measures, recycling economy practices, and financial risks are mutually dependent organizational phenomena. Moreover, the risk to profits and market displacement manifest differently among global industries. Our conclusions support expediency in implementing sustainable development and recycling-economy measures to reduce the financial risks to global companies. Further, we propose practical recommendations for companies from different sectors of the world economy. Full article

This study examines how participation in the Thessaloniki International Fair (T.I.F.) influences exhibitors’ satisfaction and loyalty toward the host city of Thessaloniki. It investigates factors such as event organization, logistical support, business networking opportunities, and exhibitors’ interactions with local infrastructure and services. Using social exchange theory (S.E.T.) as a framework, this research investigates how positive exchanges, including cultural experiences, local hospitality, and professional interactions at the fair, drive destination loyalty. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with German exhibitors, to capture comprehensive insights into the factors shaping their perceptions. Results indicate high satisfaction with Thessaloniki’s cultural and culinary offerings, with local hospitality emerging as a significant factor in fostering emotional connections and loyalty intentions. However, transportation and accessibility were identified as areas for improvement, as these logistical issues detract from the overall experience and impose perceived ‘costs’ within the exchange. The findings highlight these factors’ roles in shaping destination loyalty and offer actionable recommendations for improving exhibitor experiences. The findings emphasize the broader implications for urban development, highlighting how trade fairs can serve as catalysts for city branding and infrastructural improvements, thereby strengthening Thessaloniki’s position in the competitive M.I.C.E. tourism sector. In recent decades, technological shifts within the healthcare sector have significantly transformed healthcare management and utilization, introducing unprecedented possibilities that elevate quality of life. Organizational factors are recognized as key drivers in technology adoption, but involvement of hospitals in community-oriented activities and promotion of health equity are underexplored. This study investigated the impact of community social determinant activities and health equity activities on the adoption of AI and telehealth services within U.S. hospitals. The data were collected from the 2021 American Hospital Association (AHA) annual survey and were analyzed using multiple logistic and linear regression models to examine activities related to addressing population health, particularly social determinants and health equity, and their impacts on the adoption of AI and telehealth among U.S. hospitals. The results indicate a significant positive association between the community social determinant indicator and health equity indicator in adopting AI and telehealth services. Organizational factors were also major drivers of AI and telehealth adoption. The active incorporation of hospital strategies that address social determinants and promote health equity leads to the integration of advanced technologies and improves hospital conditions, enabling more adaptability to the changing healthcare landscape, which enhances healthcare services and accessibility.
