Stylistic neutrality is the basis for the stylistic evaluation of maps. Furthermore, the stylistic neutrality of a map as a cartographic text may be related to objectivity. However, what constitutes stylistic neutrality is not clearly stated in the field of cartography. The problem is complicated by the fact that the stylistically neutral image is a hypothetical image. The aim of this research is to investigate stylistic neutrality by exploring the peculiarities of cartographic language functioning in different fields of social activity. The research combines descriptive analysis, stylistic analysis, cartographic and interpretative methods. Firstly, the research reveals the concept of cartographic stylistic neutrality, in line with the cartographic linguistic paradigm. Secondly, an analysis of the characteristics of cartographic language in different fields of social activity from the point of view of stylistic neutrality is carried out. Thirdly, an example is developed to illustrate stylistic cartographic neutrality. Stylistic neutrality is characterised by the stylistic features of cartographic language: clarity, accuracy, conciseness, calmness, abstractness, temperance, neutrality and moderateness. The style of cartographic production for inventory and research activities is closest to stylistic neutrality, while the style of reflective activity is the most expressive and acts as a source of concreteness for stylistic neutrality. The research on teaching scaffolding for preschool children’s oral language development (OLD) has become an important topic in the academic world. However, there remains a lack of evidence-based research on the integration of scaffolding strategies integrated into creative art contexts to support children’s creative expression and language production. In this study, a qualitative case study was conducted to analyze the non-participatory observation and artwork analysis of five-year-old children’s drawing activities in a kindergarten in China based on socio-cultural and scaffolding theories. Three types of core scaffolding strategies were summarized. The findings reveal that the three strategies work together dynamically within the children’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD): (1) the visual prompt strategy enriches the vocabulary diversity of metaphors, adjectives, and ordinal words; (2) dialogic narrative co-construction effectively improves narrative coherence across exposition, rising action, climax, and resolution; and (3) emotional engagement strategies foster a safe expressive environment, promoting the integration of affective vocabulary with intrinsic motivation. Accordingly, a three-dimensional integrated “visual-linguistic-emotional” scaffolding model was constructed, emphasizing the practical guidelines of simultaneous scaffolding and gradual scaffolding withdrawal during the warm-up, creation, and sharing sessions of the drawing activity. This study expands the application of scaffolding theory in unstructured art contexts, and provides a systematic practical framework for the design of cross-contextual language support strategies and teacher training in preschool education. The Tunisian uprisings projected an elusive surrealistic scene that was an aberration in a part of the world where Islamic ideology had been considered the only rallying force and a midwife for regime change. However, this sense of exceptionalism was short-lived, as the religiously zealous Islamist expats and their militant executive wings infiltrated the power vacuum to resume their suspended Islamization project of the 1980s. Brandishing electoral “legitimacy”, they attempted to reframe the bourgeoning indigenous democratization project, rooted in an evolving Tunisian intellectual and cultural heritage, along the neocolonial ideological underpinnings of the “Arab Spring” metanarrative, which proffers the thesis that democracy can be promoted in the Muslim world through so-called “Moderate Muslims”. This paper challenges this dominant narrative by offering a counter-narrative about the political transition in Tunisia. It takes stock of the multidisciplinary conceptual and analytical frameworks elaborated upon in postcolonial theory, social movement theory, cognitive neuroscience theories, and digital communication theories. It draws heavily on socio-narrative translation theory. The corpus analyzed in this work consists of disparate yet corroborating narratives cutting across modes, genres, and cultural and linguistic boundaries, and is grounded in insider participant observation. This work opens an alternative inquiry into how the processes of cross-cultural knowledge production and the power dynamics they sustain have helped shape the course of the transition since 2011. Bottlenose dolphins’ broadband click vocalisations are well-studied in the literature concerning their echolocation function. Their potential use for communication among conspecifics has long been speculated but has yet to be conclusively established. In this study, we first categorised dolphins’ click production based on their amplitude contour and then analysed the distribution of individual clicks and click sequences against their duration and length. The results show that the repertoire and composition of clicks and click sequences adhere to the three essential linguistic laws of efficient communication: Zipf’s rank–frequency law, the law of brevity, and the Menzerath–Altmann law. Conforming to the rank–frequency law suggests that clicks may form a linguistic code subject to selective pressures for unification, on the one hand, and diversification, on the other. Conforming to the other two laws also implies that dolphins use clicks according to the compression criterion or minimisation of code length without losing information. Such conformity of dolphin clicks might indicate that these linguistic laws are more general, which produces an exciting research perspective on animal communication. Full article

Acquiring prosodic focus marking in a second language (L2) is difficult for learners whose native language utilizes strategies that differ from those of the target language. German typically uses pitch accents (L+H*/H*) to mark focus, while (Modern Standard) Arabic preferably employs a syntactic strategy (word order) or lexical means. In Syrian Arabic, a variety which is predominantly oral, pitch accents are used to mark focus, but the distribution and types are different from German. The present study investigates how Syrian Arabic learners of German prosodically mark focus in L2 German. A question–answer paradigm was used to elicit German subject-verb-object (SVO)-sentences with broad, narrow, or contrastive focus. Productions of advanced (C1, N = 17) and intermediate (B1/B2, N = 8) Syrian Arabic learners were compared to those of German controls (N = 12). Like the controls, both learner groups successfully placed pitch accents on focused constituents. However, learners, especially those with lower proficiency, used more pitch accents in non-focal regions than the controls, revealing challenges in de-accentuation. These may result from the larger number of phrase boundaries in learners’ productions, which in turn might be explained by transfer from the L1 or aspects of general fluency. Learners also differed from the controls with respect to accent type. They predominantly used H* for narrow or contrastive focus (instead of L+H*); proficiency effects played only a minor role here. Our study hence reveals an intricate interplay between cross-linguistic influence and proficiency in the L2 acquisition of prosodic focus marking, targeting a language pair so far underrepresented in the literature (German vs. Syrian Arabic). Air quality management concerns the assessment, analysis and mitigation strategies associated with ensuring that air is breathable and non-toxic. Successful management is a cognitively intensive task, knowledge-focused and converges multiple sources of information to develop a shared understanding of a problem. To operate effectively in this space, managers and operational teams share common points of reference in discussing problems and solutions, strategies, tactical briefings, etc., and communication and technical language use are key to the discipline. However, few studies have homed in on the language communities of air quality management discourse, and fewer still have exploited this to gain insight into the cognitive processes underpinning salient operational knowledge production. This paper draws upon a discussion from a multi-stakeholder workshop on bioaerosols and the built environment and draws upon Cognitive Linguistics to systematically examine the cognitive structuring of those different stakeholder representations. This approach is then explored as a contribution to good practice in air quality knowledge management and communication that is consistent with studies on cognitive and learning science and has potential for policy formulation. The adverb anymore is standardly a negative polarity item (NPI), which must be licensed by triggers of non-positive polarity. Some Englishes also allow anymore in positive-polarity clauses. Linguists have posited that this non-polarity anymore (NPAM) carries a feature of negative affect. However, this claim is based on elicited judgments, and linguists have argued that respondents cannot reliably evaluate NPAM via conscious judgment. To solve this problem, we employ sentiment analysis to examine the relationship between NPAM and negative affect in a Twitter corpus. Using two complementary sentiment analytic frameworks, we demonstrate that words occurring with NPAM have lower valence, higher arousal, and lower dominance than words occurring with NPI-anymore. Broadly, this confirms NPAM’s association with negative affect in natural-language productions. We additionally identify inter- and intra-regional differences in affective dimensions, as well as variability across different types of NPI trigger, showing that the relationship between negative affect and NPAM is not monolithic dialectally, syntactically, or semantically. The project demonstrates the utility of sentiment analysis for examining emotional characteristics of low-frequency variables, providing a new tool for dialectology, micro-syntax, and variationist sociolinguistics. This article carries out an interdisciplinary analysis of five MOOC courses developed by the University of Valladolid and offered on higher education platforms between 2020 and 2024. This research is based on the study of the lexical categories used by the informants participating in these courses, establishing a correlation with the theoretical and practical debates surrounding the definition of heritage and the frameworks of contemporary heritage education. Through a metalinguistic approach, the semantic limits of the emerging lexical categories are examined, paying attention to their ambiguity, polysemy and contexts of use, both from a formal linguistic perspective and from a hermeneutic approach. The analysis is based on natural language processing tools, complemented by qualitative techniques from applied linguistics and cultural studies. This dual approach, both scientific–statistical and humanistically nuanced, allows us to identify recurrent discursive patterns, as well as significant variations in the conceptualization of heritage according to the socio-cultural and geographical profiles of the participants. The results of the linguistic analysis are contrasted with the thematic lines investigated by our research group, focusing on cultural policy, legacy policies, narratives linked to the culture of depopulation, disputed scientific paradigms, and specific lexical categories in the Latin American context. In this sense, the article takes a critical look at discursive production in massive online learning environments, positioning language as a key indicator of the processes of cultural resignification and the construction of legacy knowledge in the Ibero-American context. The findings of my scientific article underscore the pressing need for a multiform liberation of the traditionally constrained concept of heritage, which has long been framed within rigid institutional, legal, and disciplinary boundaries. This normative framework, often centered on materiality, monumentalism, and expert-driven narratives, limits the full potential of heritage as a relational and socially embedded construct. My research reveals that diverse social agents—ranging from educators and local communities to cultural mediators and digital users—demand a more flexible, inclusive, and participatory understanding of heritage. This shift calls for redefining legacy not as a static legacy to be preserved but as a dynamic bond, deeply rooted in affective, symbolic, and intersubjective dimensions. The concept of “heritage as bond”, as developed in contemporary critical theory, provides a robust framework for this reconceptualization. Furthermore, the article highlights the need for a new vehiculation of access—one that expands heritage experience and appropriation beyond elite circles and institutionalized contexts into broader social ecosystems such as education, digital platforms, civil society, and everyday life. This approach promotes legacy democratization, fostering horizontal engagement and collective meaning-making. Ultimately, the findings advocate for a paradigm shift toward an open, polyphonic, and affective heritage model, capable of responding to contemporary socio-cultural complexities. Full article

Background: Suicide and self-harm pose significant global public health challenges with substantial economic implications. Recent Australian evidence shows considerable variations in the prevalence of suicidal behaviours and mortality among culturally and ethnically diverse population groups. This study aims to estimate the associated economic cost of suicide among culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) migrants in Australia. Methods: We evaluated the economic impact of suicide by considering the years of life lost, years of productive life lost, and overall economic costs, including direct, indirect, and intangible costs. We used data on suicide deaths in 2020 from the National Coronial Information System. Results: The estimated economic cost associated with 346 suicide deaths among CALD migrants is $2.9 billion (Australian dollars), with an average cost per fatality equivalent to $8.47 million. This estimate varies in the sensitivity analysis from $1.9 billion to $3.9 billion, depending on the average age of fatality, with corresponding average costs of $5.59 million to $11.35 million, respectively. These estimates do not capture costs associated with suicidal behaviours, which may substantially increase the economic burden. Conclusions: The significant economic impacts of CALD migrants’ suicide in Australia highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive national suicide prevention programme tailored for CALD migrant populations. Dvora Baron’s “Ogmat Nefesh” exemplifies the complexities of early 20th-century Jewish multilingualism, offering distinct Hebrew and Yiddish versions of the story to explore intersections of gender, ideology, and identity. This paper draws on theoretical frameworks from Harshav’s concept of the “language of power”, Miron’s notion of “amphibianism”, Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory, and Brenner’s “lingering bilingualism” to examine how Baron’s bilingual authorship shapes her narrative strategies and critiques systemic inequities. Through close readings of key passages, it analyzes how her linguistic choices influence character portrayal, narrative tone, and thematic emphasis across the two versions. Situating “Ogmat Nefesh” within the historical contexts of Eastern European and Palestinian Jewish communities, the study also considers Baron’s engagement with Zionist and diasporic frameworks and her feminist critique of patriarchal structures. Finally, Baron’s personal experiences of exile and literary seclusion further illuminate the interplay between individual circumstances and cultural production in her work. By engaging with secondary scholarship and feminist perspectives, this study highlights Baron’s contributions to early 20th-century feminist writing and her enduring relevance to debates on multilingualism and cultural identity in Jewish literature. Integrating Reliability, Uncertainty, and Subjectivity in Design Knowledge Flow: A CMZ-BENR Augmented Framework for Kansei Engineering

As a knowledge-intensive activity, the Kansei engineering (KE) process encounters numerous challenges in the design knowledge flow, primarily due to issues related to information reliability, uncertainty, and subjectivity. Bridging this gap, this study introduces an advanced KE framework integrating a cloud model with Z-numbers (CMZ) and Bayesian elastic net regression (BENR). In stage-I of this KE, data mining techniques are employed to process online user reviews, coupled with a similarity analysis of affective word clusters to identify representative emotional descriptors. During stage-II, the CMZ algorithm refines K-means clustering outcomes for market-representative product forms, enabling precise feature characterization and experimental prototype development. Stage-III addresses linguistic uncertainties in affective modeling through CMZ-augmented semantic differential questionnaires, achieving a multi-granular representation of subjective evaluations. Subsequently, stage-IV employs BENR for automated hyperparameter optimization in design knowledge inference, eliminating manual intervention. The framework’s efficacy is empirically validated through a domestic cleaning robot case study, demonstrating superior performance in resolving multiple information processing challenges via comparative experiments. Results confirm that this KE framework significantly improves uncertainty management in design knowledge flow compared to conventional implementations. Furthermore, by leveraging the intrinsic symmetry of the normal cloud model with Z-numbers distributions and the balanced ℓ1/ℓ2 regularization of BENR, CMZ–BENR framework embodies the principle of structural harmony. Globalization enhances communication among people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. As cultural artifacts, English language teaching textbooks are crucial media for learners’ intercultural education, especially under the concept of English as a lingua franca. This study investigated the cultural elements in Chinese university English textbooks via the approach of content analysis. Specifically, a set of Chinese English language teaching textbooks was selected as the sample and the audio and video materials were transcribed into texts as the data. The results were displayed by the counts of cultural elements. The data revealed that international cultures and source cultures were highlighted, and the textbooks were not oriented toward native-speakers’ English. Moreover, the distribution of cultural categories across the textbooks remains imbalanced, with cultural products occupying the largest proportion, and cultural perspectives displayed the least. This is mainly attributed to the fact that cultural perspectives are implicit cultures under the surface of the iceberg, and notably, they are sporadically reflected by the cultural products, practices, and persons. The findings provide suggestions that writers include balanced cultural elements in compiling English language teaching textbooks, and teachers scrutinize cultural representation and design intercultural activities. In the rapidly evolving field of e-commerce, precise and efficient attribute extraction from product descriptions is crucial for enhancing search functionality, improving customer experience, and streamlining the listing process for sellers. This study proposes a large language model (LLM)-based approach for automated attribute extraction on Trendyol’s e-commerce platform. For comparison purposes, a deep learning (DL) model is also developed, leveraging a transformer-based architecture to efficiently identify explicit attributes. In contrast, the LLM, built on the Mistral architecture, demonstrates superior contextual understanding, enabling the extraction of both explicit and implicit attributes from unstructured text. The models are evaluated on an extensive dataset derived from Trendyol’s Turkish-language product catalog, using performance metrics such as precision, recall, and F1-score. Results indicate that the proposed LLM outperforms the DL model across most metrics, demonstrating superiority not only in direct single-model comparisons but also in average performance across all evaluated categories. This advantage is particularly evident in handling complex linguistic structures and diverse product descriptions. The system has been integrated into Trendyol’s platform with a scalable backend infrastructure, employing Kubernetes and Nvidia Triton Inference Server for efficient bulk processing and real-time attribute suggestions during the product listing process. This study not only advances attribute extraction for Turkish-language e-commerce but also provides a scalable and efficient NLP-based solution applicable to large-scale marketplaces. The findings offer critical insights into the trade-offs between accuracy and computational efficiency in large-scale multilingual NLP applications, contributing to the broader field of automated product classification and information retrieval in e-commerce ecosystems. Subject pronoun expression (SPE) has been widely studied as a sociolinguistic variable across a range of languages. However, previous research has primarily focused on production, leaving the perception of subject pronouns largely unexplored. The perception of sociolinguistic variants not only reflects unconscious judgments towards linguistic features but also unveils the social meanings associated with these features. This study explores the perception of SPE in Mandarin by native and non-native listeners. 262 participants (185 native and 77 non-native) were recruited for Mandarin SPE perception tasks in which participants needed to rate the appropriate use of SPE in given contexts. Mixed-effects regression models reveal that native and non-native Mandarin listeners shared similar perception patterns of SPE. SPE rate serves as a significant structural constraint for both native and non-native perception. However, these two groups differ in that person of the subject and L2 experience play a key role in native perception, whereas non-native listeners demonstrated greater sensitivity to gender as a social factor. To what extent production and perception may interact is further discussed. This study contributes to the current understanding of sociolinguistics and second language acquisition by providing empirical evidence of SPE perception, adopting innovative approaches to examine variation perception, addressing the differences between native and non-native patterns of perceptual variation, and exploring the connection between variation production and perception. This study aims to analyze the spatial effects triggered by dollar liquidity by constructing a multidimensional spatial matrix that modifies the traditional monetary spatial framework. We utilized a three-level spatial econometric model (Spatial Lag, Durbin, and Generalized Nested Space) to measure Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Consumer Price Index (CPI), and Asset Price Bubbles (BBL) through five spillover channels (geography, linguistics, politics, war, and economy). Our aim is to establish a systematic relationship between the conduction mechanism, means, economic indicators, and dollar externalities to examine liquidity spillover effects at varying distances in the global monetary space. We find that the spatial effects induced by the global circulation of the US dollar behave significantly differently in a single matrix space compared to in a multidimensional space. While the model verifies the existence of a positive correlation between the complexity of a single space and the spillover effect from a conduction mechanism perspective, the measure of the multidimensional matrix shows that the significance of the spillover effect weakens with an increase in abstraction level from a conduction means perspective. It suggests that spatial matrices of different dimensions reflect different economic realities. The former shows hierarchical multivariate details in independent matrices, while the variation in the level of abstraction of matrices of different dimensions in the latter enhances their interactivity and complexity.
