Informal Treatment Practices in Ornamental Aquaria: An Overlooked Interface Between Aquatic Animal Health, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and One Health

Ornamental aquarium keeping collectively involves millions of freshwater, marine, and reef systems in which fish, corals, invertebrates, biofilters, microbial communities, and human husbandry practices are closely interconnected. In these domestic aquatic animal systems, preventive and curative treatments may include antimicrobials, antiparasitics, antiseptics, oxidizing agents, copper-based products, dips, and commercial formulations targeting microbial proliferations or visible system deterioration. Many interventions occur without veterinary diagnosis, microbiological confirmation, standardized dosing, active-ingredient transparency, or post-treatment monitoring. This raises concerns for aquatic animal health and welfare, as whole-system treatments may affect not only the intended pathogen or pest but also non-target organisms, biofilter communities, animal-associated microbiota, and water quality stability. Digital communities and online platforms can rapidly circulate empirical treatment protocols, although they may also provide opportunities for stewardship education and improved husbandry guidance. Current evidence does not support interpreting ornamental aquaria as major independent drivers of antimicrobial resistance. The more defensible concern is stewardship: biologically active compounds may be used repeatedly and empirically in animal systems without diagnosis, professional guidance, or systematic monitoring. This Perspective argues that ornamental aquaria should be recognized as an overlooked interface between aquatic animal health, welfare, antimicrobial stewardship, and One Health. It proposes a research and communication agenda focused on treatment transparency, diagnosis, prevention, biofilter protection, and responsible care practices. Full article

Education is crucial for addressing the global biodiversity crisis and encouraging behaviours that support sustainable resource use and biodiversity protection. Species identification skills are an important part of biodiversity education, but research shows that educational practitioners have limited species knowledge and preferences for certain biodiversity. This study compares UK practitioners’ knowledge, awareness, and perceptions regarding four biodiversity categories (invertebrates, mammals, birds, flowering plants). UK schoolteachers in primary education, secondary science, and geography (n = 192) completed an online survey, comprising an identification test, free listing exercise, Likert scale, and closed and open-text questions. Knowledge was poor overall but highest for birds and mammals, followed by plants and lastly invertebrates. Few respondents correctly identified all six plant species, and none correctly identified all six invertebrates. Identification knowledge was positively associated with age, nature connectedness, and type of university degree. Relative awareness was high for mammals, similar for trees, flowers and birds, and low for invertebrates and other vertebrate groups. Respondents perceived colourful flying species as attractive but species with stinging structures as unattractive. Approximately half the respondents thought it was important for teachers to possess identification skills and two thirds thought that children had poor identification skills. The potential impacts of low invertebrate knowledge and awareness on environmental education are discussed and solutions proposed for teacher training, support, and classroom interventions. The increasing social, ethical and regulatory pressure on the use of vertebrates in bioscience research has promoted the development of alternative models. The use of invertebrate models is very common in basic research, where insects are used in many studies. Cockroaches such as Gromphadorhina portentosa have emerged as a promising model organism due to their ease of maintenance, breeding in laboratory conditions, longevity, physiological resilience, size, and ability to be manipulated for sample collection. Similarly, prior to 2010, the Periplaneta americana was widely used as a bioscience model and shares many of the attributes of the Gromphadorhina portentosa. The objective of our study was to carry out a review in which we described the biological characteristics and analyzed the application of cockroaches, and specifically Gromphadorhina portentosa, as an alternative model in bioscience research. To do so, we established the period from 2010 to 2025 to carry out the bibliographic search in international scientific databases, PubMed and Scopus, using only peer-reviewed scientific publications on cockroach applications in bioscience research. This review outlines the principal biological characteristics of cockroaches and evaluates their suitability as experimental models. Additionally, potential humane euthanasia methods are discussed. The most common applications of cockroaches in laboratory experimentation are described, and a critical analysis of their advantages and limitations as model organisms is presented. The analysis reveals significant potential for the use of cockroaches in preliminary and educational studies, as well as an opportunity to expand the diversity of species in scientific research, applying the principle of replacement of the use of animals in experimentation. The document highlights the need for protocol standardization and regulatory recognition for this species, offering an updated perspective on the state of the art regarding its rational incorporation into bioscience research. Spain is the world’s leading producer and exporter of olive oil, with Andalusia being the autonomous community with the largest cultivated area. In recent decades, agricultural practices have followed a trend toward maximizing production without adequately considering ecosystem contamination. Olive groves are, in fact, complex agroecosystems in which thousands of plant species and numerous plant communities have been documented, supporting a rich diversity of vertebrate and invertebrate fauna. Intensive and unsustainable practices have led to a decline in floral diversity and, consequently, in faunal diversity. The aim of this research is to demonstrate the loss of floristic diversity associated with herbicide use. To this end, a comparative analysis of floristic diversity was conducted across 117 plots, contrasting data collected in 2007 with that from the same plots in 2021. From a methodological perspective, an inquiry-based approach was implemented involving students from the Master’s program in Olive Growing, Olive Oil, and Health. Abundance–dominance indices were compared, and the Importance Value Index (IVI) was calculated to assess changes in plant community composition. For instance, Hordeum leporinum exhibited an IVI > 70 in 2007, decreasing in 2021 to values ranging between 11 and 31.58. Similarly, Sinapis alba subsp. mairei showed a decline in IVI from 81.06 to 26.35. A notable result is the greater floristic change observed in plots located on basic substrates where herbicides were applied, compared to plots on siliceous substrates designated for grazing. This issue clearly highlights a lack of knowledge regarding appropriate cultivation techniques that promote sustainable development and social awareness. It underscores the need for educational interventions that foster learning at all levels about agricultural practices, sustainability, and ecosystem services. Full article

The use of animals in biomedical research and university teaching remains socially sensitive, shaped by ethical concerns, regulations, and public expectations. While animal models are still essential for basic and translational research, society increasingly demands transparency, strong welfare protections, and the development of alternative methods. This study investigated Spanish university students’ attitudes toward the use of animals in basic research, translational research, and educational settings, and examined their acceptance of different species for addressing human health problems. It also assessed how sociodemographic variables, personality traits, empathy, and anthropomorphism relate to these views. The sample included 653 students, predominantly women, heterosexual, and urban residents. Most participants supported the use of animals in research, whereas opinions regarding teaching uses were more divided. Attitudes toward the use of laboratory animals consistently differed by gender and field of study, with men and students in science-related disciplines showing higher acceptance. Of the psychological variables assessed, only anthropomorphism showed moderate negative correlations with support for the use of laboratory animals across all contexts. Species strongly influenced attitudes: companion animals generated the most opposition, primates and livestock elicited mixed responses, and rodents, invertebrates, and aquatic species received the highest support. Overall, students generally accept animal use but vary substantially by species, gender, and academic background. Full article

Leopold Blaschka (1822–1895) and his son Rudolf (1857–1939) created scientifically accurate glass models of marine invertebrates that reshaped natural history education in the 19th century. Their work overcame the limitations of traditional preservation techniques, allowing for detailed and lifelike representations of soft-bodied sea creatures and botanic species. Today, their models are preserved in prestigious collections worldwide. This paper examines not only the historical and artistic significance of the Blaschka models but also presents the findings of recent material analyses, including computed tomography (CT), scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS), visible ultraviolet fluorescence (UVF), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The multi-analytical approach allowed for the characterization of the chemical composition of the glass and adhesives used, shedding light on the Blaschkas’ unique manufacturing processes and material choices. Data from this study demonstrate how the combination of a multi-analytical approach with knowledge of historical glassmaking practices can provide a solid foundation for both conservation efforts and further academic investigation into these composite objects. The study underscores the models’ value not only as artistic masterpieces but also as technological artifacts, offering insights into 19th-century scientific craftsmanship at the intersection of art and biology. Furthermore, the study presents a conservation intervention based on scientific evidence and a skilfully tailored solution, chosen piece-by-piece, part-by-part of the intricate glass models. This study examines the morphology and development of Dobreștilor–Brusturet Cave, located in the Brusturet gorge at the western edge of the Bran–Dragoslavele Corridor, an important tourist route in the Romanian Carpathians. The research aims to analyze the geomorphological characteristics and establish the heritage value of the Dobreştilor Cave geomorphosite, supporting protection efforts for invertebrate species that led to the cave’s designation as a natural monument. The inventory of physical features prompted the Piatra Craiului National Park Scientific Council to consider including this speleological site in a thematic geotourism circuit called “The Road of Gorges and Caves in the Upper Basin of the Dâmbovițean”, integrated within protected areas. This represents the first geomorphological study of the cave. Given its ecological significance within the national park’s strict protection zone, recreational tourism is prohibited. The cave should only be used as a geotourism resource for scientific research and education. Morphogenetic analysis reveals that the cave has evolved in a vadose hydrological regime since the Pleistocene, with cavity expansion influenced by free-flowing water alternating with that under pressure during torrential episodes, concomitant with the precipitation of calcium carbonate that formed various speleothems. This research supports documentation for promotional materials and could assist local authorities in the Dâmbovicioara commune with geotourism development decisions, potentially integrating the site into a proposed “Moieciu–Fundata–Dâmbovicioara–Rucăr Geological and Geomorphological Complex”. The combination of animals and plants in zoological gardens provides the opportunity for conservation within the grounds. An example is pollination gardens that support free-moving butterflies and bees. Pollination gardens and other areas with plants also support a wide range of other non-captive animals, including soil-associated invertebrates. This study targeted land snails, a species-rich group that links the brown decomposition food web and the plant-based web that is preyed upon by fireflies and birds, among others. A survey of 24 sites within the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden revealed a diverse snail fauna of 23 species. The majority were native species but included 10 non-native species that are common regional urban species, likely introduced through the plant trade. No distributional pattern of snails was evident, probably because of the similar management scheme throughout the zoo. Snails and other observed soil-associated invertebrates (e.g., isopods, millipedes, and earthworms) support non-captive birds and other animals. Lightly managed areas with leaf litter and downed wood are especially conducive to snails and other soil-associated invertebrates and are nesting sites for bees. These communities can form conservation demonstration areas that can be the basis of educational programs, including outreach programs. Full article

Sporotrichosis caused by Sporothrix brasiliensis is an emergent mycosis that is now a worldwide concern. One important step to sporotrichosis control is its correct treatment. However, limitations abound; thus, new antifungals, mainly focused on S. brasiliensis, are urgently needed. We performed a systematic review (following the PRISMA guideline) focused on (1) the global distribution of human and animal sporotrichosis by S. brasiliensis, especially outside of Brazil; (2) appraising therapies tested against this pathogen. We identified sporotrichosis caused by S. brasiliensis reported in five countries (Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, the United Kingdom, and the United States) in addition to Brazil, occurring on three continents, highlighting the epidemiological scenario in Argentina with an important increase in reported cases in recent years. Regarding the antifungal activity of drugs, 25 articles described the in vitro action of 20 unique chemicals and eight repurposed drugs against S. brasiliensis. Only five studies reported in vivo activity against S. brasiliensis (five drugs) using invertebrate and vertebrate models. Sporotrichosis caused by S. brasiliensis has a global impact and it is no longer specifically a Brazilian problem. We review the need for understanding the disease epidemiology, education of clinicians and of the populace, organization of health care delivery to respond to a spreading epidemic, and research on therapy for sporotrichosis. A semester-long internship was designed for undergraduate students at the University of Delhi, India. Teams comprising 30 students from all over the University were trained to carry out field exploration activities on the Yamuna River flowing in Delhi. The students were provided with portable kits to measure the physicochemical parameters at a selected bank of the Yamuna River. Students documented the invertebrate fauna in the riparian zone of the banks. At the same time, they noted the anthropogenic polluting activities on the bank of the Yamuna River. This internship educated students about the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They all studied Ecology and Environmental Science in their undergraduate curriculum, but they all confessed that they were unaware of the 17 SDGs and the deteriorating health of the Yamuna River in the city. We educated students about the freshwater emergency recovery plan and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list of ecosystems. This internship is a great example of an undergraduate-directed study or research experience that supported student constructivism and inquiry-based learning, and this research article elaborates on student reports and situational interest in freshwater biology to achieve SDG6. The pioneer Swiss naturalist René-Édouard Claparède (1832–1871), professor at the University of Geneva, left important contributions to diverse areas of natural science, biology, and comparative anatomy, including the structure of infusoria, annelids, and earthworms, the evolution of arthropods, and the embryology of spiders. He also published observations on marine invertebrates. This essay presents a brief overview of his academic life and work and makes the distinction from his nephew with the same name, the neurologist and educational psychologist Édouard Claparède (1873–1840). Scientists and conservationists suggest species knowledge as a possible starting point when it comes to creating deeper knowledge and awareness of nature, the environment, and biodiversity. The aim of this work was to analyze secondary school students’ species knowledge of vertebrates and invertebrates. This is one of the first studies that also draws on invertebrates. Furthermore, we investigated whether knowledge of species forms a basis for the formation of environmental knowledge and attitude towards the environment. For this purpose, a questionnaire on species knowledge was developed. In addition, a questionnaire was used to measure environmental system knowledge, and the 2-MEV Attitude Scale to measure attitude towards the environment. The questionnaires were completed by 103 seventh and eighth-grade (age: 12–13) students of a secondary German school (Gymnasium, highest stratification level). The students identified more vertebrates than invertebrates (50.15% vs. 36.7%). The structural equation model with the latent variables species knowledge, environmental system knowledge, and attitude towards the environment showed that species knowledge has a highly significant influence on the two other latent variables. More precisely species knowledge explained 28% of the variance in environmental systems knowledge and 17% of the variance in attitude towards the environment. This study can therefore draw attention to the relevance of teaching species knowledge in the sense of Education for Sustainable Development, in order not to promote decreasing biodiversity through dwindling species knowledge. Accessible palaeontological sites conform highly adequate out-of-school environments for meaningful learning experiences regarding formal and non-formal teaching of geosciences. Accessible palaeontological sites conform highly adequate out-of-school environments for meaningful learning experiences regarding formal and non-formal teaching of geosciences. With a perspective of international cooperation, two correlative Cenomanian–Turonian (Upper Cretaceous) outcrops from the Iberian Peninsula have been chosen as the focus of this project—the sections of Figueira da Foz (Portugal) and Tamajón (Spain)—along with the Palaeontological and Archaeological Interpretation Centre of Tamajón (CIPAT). Virtualization of fossil samples and sites has been undertaken by means of phase-shift scanning, photogrammetry, and small object scanning by structured light and laser triangulation, resulting in three-dimensional virtual models of the main fossil tracks and invertebrate fossil samples. These virtual fossils have allowed the development of transdisciplinary didactic activities for different educational levels and the general public, which have been presented as file cards where the age of participants, objectives, multiple intelligences, European Union key competences, needed resources, development, and further observations are specified. This work aims to contribute to improving the design and development of didactic sequences for out-of-school education at these sites, organizing effective transdisciplinary teaching tools, and developing awareness, values, and responsibility towards geoheritage. Imparting knowledge on agriculture and ecology is important for the preservation of nature. This study suggested the design of a rice–fish mixed farming (RFMF) paddy for urban agriculture and ecological education in Korea. This RFMF paddy supports the growth of rice as well as freshwater fish. ANOVA statistical analysis was conducted, and an RFMF paddy was necessary for urban agriculture/education and confirmed that biodiversity was high. To this aim, the design of a 10 m × 10 m RFMF paddy was suggested. Vegetation, insects, and aquatic invertebrates of the RFMF paddy constituted approximately 40 species more than a conventional paddy. The quality of an actual farm’s soil and water was assessed, and techniques for the co-cultivation of rice and fish are proposed. The soil must comply with the standards of Korean paddy soil, and the water must be in the temperature range of 15 to 35 °C. In the proposed design, approximately 44.0 kg rice can be produced, and catfish can grow up to 30 cm. The study suggested many experiences using rice and freshwater fish. On the basis of our study design, a virtual model of an RFMF paddy was developed in consideration of the accessible space. The development of RFMF paddies in educational institutions can promote biodiversity in cities while providing ecological education regarding aquatic plants and insects. Full article
