Background/Objectives: Psychoanalytic theories of destructiveness highlight its deep, unconscious origins tied to primal emotional and motivational mechanisms. Traditional psychiatric models of suicidal risk assessment focus on classic risk factors, limiting diagnostic and intervention approaches. This study examines the neuropsychoanalytic foundations of destructive tendencies, integrating sublimation and evolutionary motivational systems, redefining their role in the destruction process. Methods: A total of 480 AI-generated illustrations were assessed for interpretative accuracy. The final set was used in an online projection task with 204 respondents. Analyses included factorial exploration of the structure of the tool, assessment of psychometric properties (Cronbach α, ROC, AUC), logistic regression and analysis of intergroup differences. Results: Factor analysis identified eight subscales. Six of the eight factors showed thematic resemblance to Panksepp’s emotional systems, although this interpretation remains theory-driven and requires empirical validation. The remaining two—pursuit of destruction and its sublimation—extend beyond natural evolutionary mechanisms. Destructiveness was best explained by depression and psychological pain (OR = 1.39, 95% CI [1.26–1.52]), aggression and impulsivity (OR = 1.68, 95% CI [1.36–2.06]), and anxiety and a sense of threat (OR = 1.55, 95% CI [1.27–1.90]). Key predictors of destruction sublimation were curiosity (OR = 3.15, 95% CI [2.43–4.09]), closeness and love (OR = 3.43, 95% CI [2.48–4.76]), and pleasure and fun (OR = 3.08, 95% CI [2.26–4.20]). Analyses showed higher levels of destructiveness in individuals receiving psychological or psychiatric support, those with prior diagnoses, and students compared to employed individuals. Conclusions: Results indicate high reliability (Cronbach’s α > 0.87) and discrimination among internal subscale-defined groups (ROC > 0.7), supporting the tool’s potential in assessing destructive and sublimation tendencies within a neuropsychoanalytic framework. Future studies will explore its external validity and clinical applications. Full article

Background/Objectives: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) during adolescence increases the risk of psychosocial difficulties. To address these challenges, the 10VIDA program was developed to support psychological adjustment, treatment adherence, and quality of life. This study examined socioemotional factors linked to chronic illness adjustment and psychological well-being in adolescents with T1DM, assessing the impact of the 10VIDA intervention. Methods: Adolescents with T1DM participated in two studies: (1) an inter-group design with experimental and control groups assessed pre- and post-intervention, and (2) an intra-subject longitudinal design with three assessments (two pre-intervention and one post-intervention). All participants completed the 10VIDA intervention delivered online through seven sessions: five targeted adolescents with T1DM, while two included primary caregivers. The program’s main objective was to enhance well-being and quality of life. Results: Girls reported higher anxiety and depression, while boys showed greater self-esteem and emotional well-being. The experimental group experienced significant reductions in discomfort, anxiety, depression, and perceived illness threat, alongside improvements in self-esteem and psychological well-being. Intra-subject analysis also revealed increased well-being and decreased discomfort after intervention. Conclusions: The 10VIDA program effectively addressed socioemotional challenges in adolescents with T1DM and reshaping illness perception. These findings underscore the importance of integrated psychological support to improve adjustment and quality of life in chronic illness during adolescence. Full article

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of benzodiazepines (BZDs) on pre-procedural anxiety, procedural parameters, post-procedural pain, and satisfaction in transarterial microembolization (TAME). Methods: Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from 31 patients with refractory upper extremity pain treated with transradial TAME in 2023. Patients were divided into a non-BZD group (n = 15; 8 female; age 59.3 ± 9.5 y) and a BZD group (n = 16; 10 female; age 53.3 ± 9.9 y). Pre-procedural anxiety (five-point Likert scale), satisfaction (Likert), and pain (Visual Analog Scale, VAS) were assessed. Satisfaction and pain were evaluated immediately and 1 and 3 months post-procedure. Results: Baseline demographics, intra-procedural variables, and post-procedural reductions in VAS scores showed no significant intergroup differences (all p > 0.05). However, compared to the non-BZD group, the BZD group exhibited a significant reduction in anxiety scores (1.12 vs. 3.80; p = 0.04) and procedure time per artery (23.58 vs. 34.81 min; p = 0.001). The BZD group also reported significantly higher immediate, short-term, and mid-term satisfaction (4.25 vs. 3.13, p = 0.045; 4.69 vs. 3.67, p = 0.01; 4.81 vs. 3.80, p < 0.001), and a significantly greater proportion exhibited artery diameters ≥ 2 mm (p = 0.02). Conclusions: TAME with oral BZD premedication significantly improves patient satisfaction, reduces anxiety, and promotes a high proportion of arterial diameters ≥ 2 mm, thereby reducing procedural time. Although acculturation research recognizes that a community’s context of reception shapes acculturation, relatively limited research has explored how social and contextual variables shape the divergence of ‘real’ acculturation from ‘ideal’ (or individually desired) acculturation across life domains. Building on the Relative Acculturation Extended Model, this study examines how one’s local context and interactions within it shape acculturation in peripheral (public), intermediate (social), and central (private) life domains. In this cross-sectional study, 408 first-generation immigrant adults born in Latin America (M = 37.91, SD = 12.93) who had lived in the United States for 1–55 years (M = 16.56; SD = 9.50) completed self-report measures across four communities with distinct contexts of reception. Results revealed that perception of the receiving community’s acculturation preferences, prejudice, community contact, and symbolic threat all shaped immigrants’ ‘real’ acculturation beyond ‘ideal’, both directly and indirectly via their sense of community and intergroup anxiety. These socioecological factors had a stronger impact on peripheral domain acculturation overall, though pathways generally remained consistent across life domains. Results have numerous implications for policy, practice, and the future of acculturation research as they suggest that social context more readily shapes public expressions of acculturation than more private expressions. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of exercise on psychological disorders in patients receiving childhood cancer treatment. Methods: The study group consisted of patients with cancer between the ages of 9 and 17 who were treated in the Hematology–Oncology units of Erciyes University. For the sample group, children with cancer were informed about the content of the study, and 40 children with cancer agreed to participate in the study voluntarily. The volunteers were divided into two groups, control and experimental, each consisting of 20 people. For the pre-test, participants completed a socio-demographic information form, as well as the Kovacs Depression scale, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the pediatric cancer quality of life scale for children. Volunteers in the experimental group engaged in aerobic and strength exercises for an eight-week period. The study was completed with 8 volunteers in the control group and 14 volunteers in the experimental group due to various factors, such as voluntary withdrawal, disease progression, and mortality. After this period, the volunteers were asked to complete the same scales once more as a post-test. The SPSS 22.00 statistical analysis program was used. The independent samples t-test was employed to compare the pre-test and post-test findings of the control and experimental groups, while the paired samples t-test was used for within-group evaluations. Results: In the within-group comparisons, significant differences were observed in favor of the post-test scores in the experimental group for both the anxiety scale (p < 0.05, Mean: 8.14) and the quality-of-life child form (p < 0.05, Mean: 38.14). For intergroup comparisons, significant differences were found in favor of the experimental group in terms of post-test scores of depression (p < 0.05, mean: 10.57) and anxiety scales (p < 0.05, mean: 8.14). Conclusions: It is postulated that this outcome stems from the positive effects of sports activities in helping children undergoing cancer treatment distance themselves from their psychological adversities. Background/Objectives: Mental health problems are a major cause of disability, impacting nearly 20% of adolescents. Nevertheless, they are hesitant to seek help because of stigma and fear of being labelled. Adolescents often have low mental health literacy and perceive mental health problems as personal failures. To address it, our study aimed to identify subgroups within the adolescent population based on mental health knowledge, social stigma, experiences of intergroup anxiety, and endorsement of stereotypes. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 182 adolescents (50.6% male) aged 10 to 17 years (M = 13.8, SD = 2.4). Participants completed an online survey comprising the Mental Health Knowledge Schedule, Attribution Questionnaire (AQ-8-C), Intergroup Anxiety Scale, and a scale regarding stereotypes towards people with mental health problems. Cluster analysis was used to identify the subgroups. Results: We identified three subgroups: (1) “Potential Advocates”, showing high mental health knowledge, low social stigma, low intergroup anxiety, and moderate endorsement of stereotypes; (2) “Ambivalents”, manifesting high mental health knowledge, moderate social stigma, heightened intergroup anxiety, and low endorsement of stereotypes; and (3) “Stigmatizers”, revealing low mental health knowledge, pronounced social stigma, moderate intergroup anxiety, and tendency to endorse stereotypes. Conclusions: The results highlight the multiplicity of perceptions regarding mental health and the pivotal role of knowledge, stigma, intergroup dynamics, and stereotypes in shaping attitudes. Implications for interventions targeting mental health stigma and fostering positive attitudes among adolescents are discussed, underscoring the importance of customised strategies to address the multiple needs and experiences characteristic of this developmental stage. Background: Stigma education for nursing students has focused solely on stigma reduction, with studies showing temporary improvements in attitudes. However, nursing education research should also emphasize the importance of critical reflection and self-reflection to enhance attitudes, beliefs, topic comprehension, and learning satisfaction. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the “This is me” intervention regarding knowledge, attitudes, and communication skills of senior undergraduate nursing students in responding to mental illness-related stigma. Methods: This study employed a psychoeducational intervention for reducing mental illness stigma, using a questionnaire survey to assess pre- and post-intervention effects, with 37 eligible nursing students undergoing clinical training in psychiatric services between 16 May and 15 July 2022. Instruments included sociodemographic and health questions, the MICA-4 scale to evaluate students’ attitudes toward mental illness, the MAKS to measure mental health knowledge, the Empathy Scale (JSPE-S), the Intergroup Anxiety Scale (SS-12), and the Attribution Questionnaire (AQ-27). Results: Most students were female (73.0%) and single (70.3%), with a mean age of around 29 years. After implementing the psychoeducational program, there was a statistically significant increase in overall stigma-related knowledge (MAKS: Z = −1.99, p < 0.05), a decrease in intergroup anxiety (IAS: Z = −3.42, p < 0.05), and reductions in the perceptions of patients as dangerous (AQ27—Dangerousness: Z = −2.399, p < 0.05) and fear (AQ27—Fear: Z = −2.415, p < 0.05). Additionally, there was an improvement in empathy, specifically in Perspective Taking (JSPE: Z = −2.555, p < 0.05). Conclusions: This program may contribute to mental health literacy related to stigma, positively impacting therapeutic relationships and communication with people with mental illness and resulting in more effective care practices. This purpose of this research is to understand the role of networked narratives in social media in modulating viewer prejudice toward ethnic neighborhoods. We designed experimental videos on YouTube based on intergroup contact theory and narrative frameworks aimed at (1) gaining knowledge, (2) reducing anxiety, and (3) fostering empathy. Despite consistent storytelling across the videos, we observed significant variations in viewer emotions, especially in replies to comments. We hypothesized that these discrepancies could be explained by the influence of the surrounding digital network on the narrative’s reception. Two-stage research was conducted to understand this phenomenon. First, automated emotion analysis on user comments was conducted to identify the varying emotions. Then, we explored contextual factors surrounding each video on YouTube, focusing on algorithmic curation inferred from traffic sources, region, and search keywords. Findings revealed that negative algorithmic curation and user interactivity result in overall negative viewer emotion, largely driven by video placement and recommendations. However, videos with higher traffic originating from viewers who had watched the storyteller’s other videos result in more positive sentiments and longer visits. This suggests that consistent exposure within the channel can foster more positive acceptance of cultural outgroups by building trust and reducing anxiety. There is the need, then, for storytellers to curate discussions to mitigate prejudice in digital contexts. Full article

Patients with fibromyalgia syndrome tend to report deficits in cognitive functions; however, there is no clear consensus on which cognitive domains are impaired. The aim of this study was to compare the differences in cognitive performance between a group of patients with fibromyalgia syndrome and a group of pain-free subjects controlling for the covariables anxiety, depression, and sleep quality. In total, 130 patients with fibromyalgia syndrome and 111 pain-free subjects with an average age of 54.96 years completed the evaluation protocol consisting of sociodemographic data, psychological data, and neurocognitive tests. All data were collected from May 2022 to May 2023. Multivariate analyses of covariance (MANCOVAs) were conducted to assess intergroup differences in all neurocognitive tests. MANCOVA analyses showed that the group of patients with fibromyalgia showed a worse cognitive performance than the group of pain-free subjects after controlling for anxiety, depression, and sleep quality. This study found that fibromyalgia patients exhibited worse cognitive performance and executive function than pain-free subjects. Thus, cognitive performance seems to not be related with anxiety, depression, or sleep quality in our sample of women with FMS. Full article

The Efficiency of Kinesiotherapy versus Physical Modalities on Pain and Other Common Complaints in Fibromyalgia

Due to its variety of signs and symptoms, there have been numerous attempts to treat fibromyalgia (FM), but a cure has yet to be established. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a complex kinetic therapy program and a combined physical modality program on pain and other common symptoms of FM. Patients and methods: A total of 78 female patients were included in this study; 39 subjects underwent a kinesiotherapy (KT) intervention (combining aerobic and Pilates exercises), and 39 participated in a physical modality (PM) program (including electrotherapy (TENS and low-laser therapy) and thermotherapy). Results: Regarding the parameter of pain assessment, kinesiotherapy demonstrated its superiority both during the treatment period and in the evaluation 3 months after therapy cessation. Both in terms of patient-reported pain (inter-group comparisons: p = 0.000 at T3) and the examination of tender points (inter-group comparisons: p = 0.000 at T3), as well as the algometric assessment, pain was alleviated by the two forms of applied kinetic therapy. The observed functional impairment was statistically significantly influenced (p = 0.001) at the end of the kinetic program application, while for the perceived functional impairment, neither therapy proved superiority over the other at any point of evaluation (inter-group comparisons: p = 0.715 at T3). Regarding the influence of the emotional consequences implied by fibromyalgia, neither the forms of kinesiotherapy nor the chosen physical modalities proved superiority at any point of evaluation (HAQ anxiety inter-group comparisons: p = 0.000 at T3). In conclusion, even though kinesiotherapy had superior influences on fibromyalgia pain in the studied group, the current research lends credence to the significance of non-pharmacological therapy in managing fibromyalgia. Participants demonstrated positive advancements in subjective and objective pain assessments, as well as improvements in functional and emotional well-being. Full article

To reduce prejudice and to promote intergroup harmony and equality, the imagined intergroup contact technique, based on the mental simulation of an encounter with an outgroup member, has been proposed. Though a substantial body of research has provided support for the efficacy of imagined intergroup contact in prejudice reduction, an alternative strand of research has raised questions about its effectiveness. In this experiment, we combined imagined intergroup contact with cultural humility, that is, an other-oriented, humble approach toward people with different cultural backgrounds, recognizing status and power imbalances and privileges. Specifically, we tested whether instructions aimed at eliciting cultural humility during imagined contact boosted its effectiveness in reducing prejudice and promoting future contact intentions, compared to a standard imagined contact condition and to a control imagination task. Intergroup anxiety was tested as a mediator of the effects of culturally humble imagined contact on reduced prejudice and on future contact intentions. We found that culturally humble imagined contact, compared to the two other conditions, reduced intergroup anxiety and yielded indirect effects on reduced prejudice and increased future contact intentions. The findings will be discussed by focusing on the integration of cultural humility in prejudice reduction techniques based on intergroup contact. Full article

Neurophysiological and Psychometric Outcomes in Minimal Consciousness State after Advanced Audio–Video Emotional Stimulation: A Retrospective Study

In the last ten years, technological innovations have led to the development of new, advanced sensory stimulation (SS) tools, such as PC-based rehabilitative programs or virtual reality training. These are meant to stimulate residual cognitive abilities and, at the same time, assess cognition and awareness, also in patients with a minimally conscious state (MCS). Our purpose was to evaluate the clinical and neurophysiological effects of multi-sensory and emotional stimulation provided by Neurowave in patients with MCS, as compared to a conventional SS treatment. The psychological status of their caregivers was also monitored. In this retrospective study, we have included forty-two MCS patients and their caregivers. Each MCS subject was included in either the control group (CG), receiving a conventional SS, or the experimental group (EG), who was submitted to the experimental training with the Neurowave. They were assessed before (T0) and after the training (T1) through a specific clinical battery, including both motor and cognitive outcomes. Moreover, in the EG, we also monitored the brain electrophysiological activity (EEG and P300). In both study groups (EG and CG), the psychological caregiver’s aspects, including anxiety levels, were measured using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). The intra-group analysis (T0-T1) of the EG showed statistical significances in all patients’ outcome measures, while in the CG, we found statistical significances in consciousness and awareness outcomes. The inter-group analysis between the EG and the CG showed no statistical differences, except for global communication skills. In conclusion, the multi-sensory stimulation approach through Neurowave was found to be an innovative rehabilitation treatment, also allowing the registration of brain activity during treatment. The Neuropsychological and Emotional Profile of Adults with Parasomnia: A Case Series

Although parasomnias are nocturnal phenomena occurring during sleep or during arousals from sleep, there is increasing evidence that they are associated with daytime dysfunction as well. However, systematic studies in this field are scarce. The aim of the current case series was to investigate the sleep–wake, neuropsychological and emotional profiles of patients with parasomnias. Thirty patients with parasomnia (13 NREM, 17 REM) and 30 healthy subjects matched for age, sex and educational status were included. All participants underwent comprehensive neuropsychological, cognitive and behavioral evaluation. We found that parasomnia patients scored higher in all neuropsychological, emotional, sleep–wake and quality of life scales compared to healthy subjects. The presence of a parasomnia was associated with major impact on daytime functioning across several domains with increased levels of fatigue (FSS > 4) in 56%, sleepiness (ESS > 10) in 47%, depressive symptoms (BDI > 20) in 17%, anxiety (PSWQ > 52) in 17%, anger expression out (STAXI A > 16) in 27% and anger expression in (STAXI B > 16) in 23%, as well as a reduced average quality of life score (RAND derived from SF-36). Sleep–wake disturbances were significantly correlated with QoL scores. In the intergroup analysis between REM/NREM, we found that the REM group had worse cognitive performance and lower levels of fatigue/energy compared to NREM patients. These findings suggest that parasomnia is associated with difficulties in several aspects of daytime functioning (cognitive, affective/emotional and physical) and, therefore, parasomnia diagnostic workup should not be limited only to nocturnal phenomena. Background: During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, we could observe different attitudes towards restrictive bans and orders. Aim: The research aimed to examine the potential psychological factors, such as generalized anxiety, fear of COVID-19 or social approval, related to the approach to mandatory face covering in public spaces. Methods: The web-assisted interviews survey was used among 202 participants, which included socio-demographical data, approach to face covering, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, the COVID-19 Anxiety Scale, and The Questionnaire of Social Approval. Result: The data showed a statistically significant correlation between compliance to the rule of face and nose covering vs. anxiety and compliance to the rule of face and nose covering vs. generalized anxiety. The results indicate differences between vaccinated and non-vaccinated people in the anxiety of COVID-19, generalized anxiety, and compliance with the rule of face and nose covering. Conclusions: People vaccinated has a higher level of anxiety and more often compliance with the rule of face covering. It is worth noting that an overly pronounced fear of COVID-19 could be a risk factor for mental health. More research about coping with anxiety in the group of vaccinated people is recommended. Background: Occupational stress and shift work (including night shift work) are associated with physical and psychological health consequences in healthcare providers in general and those working in psychiatric establishments in particular. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of occupational risk factors and unscheduled night-time naps on self-reported health disorders among nurses working in a French psychiatric hospital. Methods: We performed a 12-month observational field study of experienced nurses working at Philippe Pinel Psychiatric Hospital (Amiens, France) between September 2018 and September 2019. A comparative descriptive study of two groups of nurses who filled out a questionnaire on health and occupational stress was performed: nurses working permanently on the night shift (the night shift group, who took unscheduled naps), and nurses rotating weekly between morning and afternoon shifts (the day shift group). Results: The night and day shift groups comprised 53 and 30 nurses, respectively. There were no intergroup differences in health disorders, sleep quality, occupational stress, and risk factor perception. Correlation analyses showed that in the day shift group, a low level of support from supervisors was associated with elevated levels of distress, anxiety, and gastrointestinal disorders. In the night shift group, a greater overall work load was associated with elevated levels of anxiety and distress. These findings indicated that the nurses on the night shift had adapted well to their working conditions. Conclusions: An organizational strategy including an unscheduled night-time nap might improve health among night shift nurses. Full article
