Advanced three-dimensional extended reality (XR) technologies are highly suitable for cultural heritage research and education. XR tools enable the creation of realistic virtual or augmented reality applications for curating and disseminating information about cultural artifacts and sites. Developing XR applications for cultural heritage requires interdisciplinary collaboration involving strong teamwork and soft skills to manage user requirements, system specifications, and design cycles. Given the diverse end-users, achieving high precision, accuracy, and efficiency in information management and user experience is crucial. Human–computer interaction (HCI) design and evaluation methods are essential for ensuring usability and return on investment. This article presents ten case studies of cultural heritage software projects, illustrating the interdisciplinary work between computer science and HCI design. Students from institutions such as the State University of New York (USA), Glasgow School of Art (UK), University of Granada (Spain), University of Málaga (Spain), Duy Tan University (Vietnam), Imperial College London (UK), Research University Institute of Communication & Computer Systems (Greece), Technical University of Košice (Slovakia), and Indiana University (USA) contributed to creating, assessing, and improving the usability of these diverse cultural heritage applications. The results include a structured typology of CH XR application scenarios, detailed insights into design and evaluation practices across ten international use cases, and a development framework that supports interdisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder integration in phygital cultural heritage projects. This research paper presents an assessment of geohazards on Lefkas Island, Greece, using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to map risk and enhance public awareness through an interactive web application. Natural hazards such as landslides, floods, wildfires, and desertification threaten both the safety of residents and the island’s tourism-dependent economy, particularly due to its seismic activity and Mediterranean climate. By combining the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction with GIS capabilities, we created detailed hazard maps that visually represent areas of susceptibility and provide critical insights for local authorities and the public. The web application developed serves as a user-friendly platform for disseminating hazard information and educational resources, thus promoting community preparedness and resilience. The findings highlight the necessity for proactive land management strategies and community engagement in disaster risk reduction efforts. This study underscores GIS’s pivotal role in fostering informed decision making and enhancing the safety of Lefkas Island’s inhabitants and visitors in the face of environmental challenges. Teacher education plays a key role in promoting inclusion and educational equity, especially in contexts characterised by increasing socio-cultural diversity and technological advancement. In this framework, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and digital technologies are presented as complementary and innovative strategies to create accessible, flexible, and motivating learning environments for all students. The study analysed the impact of UDL-focused learning activities and integrated Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). A comparative tool was applied before and after the intervention to measure the level of knowledge, perception, and digital competence of prospective teachers. Statistical analyses were carried out to evaluate the changes obtained. Findings reveal significant improvements in knowledge about UDL, as well as positive perceptions of ICT as a resource for inclusion. Participants demonstrated a greater understanding of UDL principles and strengthened their digital competences to design educational proposals adapted to diversity. The research confirms the value of integrating UDL and ICT in teacher training, fostering inclusive educational practices. It highlights the need to strengthen training programmes that respond to the current challenges of the education system. Full article

Sustainable development has emerged as a critical priority for the global community, influencing all aspects of development worldwide. Within this context, the role of education and training in advancing sustainable development can contribute to this. This research aims to explore whether the integration of Information and Communication Technology educational tools into the curricula of engineering technicians helps trainees better understand the concepts of climate change and resource management, which are directly linked to the green transition and the green economy, compared to traditional educational methods. The study was conducted with trainees from Higher Vocational Training Schools (SAEKs) in the wider Athens area, Greece. According to the results, using educational technology to teach engineering courses aids students in developing the competencies needed to change production processes and business models in the direction of a greener future. This is especially crucial as future technicians will be able to use cutting-edge methods to lower emissions and boost resource use efficiency. The findings of the study could provide important information for all those involved in the design of educational curricula of engineering technicians. Concerns and thoughts on the effective use of educational technology in the educational process are also expressed. Full article

This study explores the integration of digital media tools—specifically TikTok, online press news analysis, and digital portfolios—into pre-service chemistry teacher education to enhance student engagement, foster conceptual understanding, and highlight the relevance of chemistry in society. The educational intervention involved 138 pre-service teachers who analysed digital news articles to reflect on the societal and environmental implications of chemistry, promoting media literacy and awareness of socioscientific issues. Additionally, they created short-form TikTok videos, using social media to communicate scientific concepts creatively and interactively. All participants compiled their work into digital portfolios, which served as both a reflective and integrative tool. A post-course Likert-scale questionnaire (N = 77) revealed high overall satisfaction with the methodology, with 94.8% valuing the news analysis activity and 59.7% finding TikTok particularly engaging. Despite some limitations regarding access to technical infrastructure, the findings indicate that incorporating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in this manner supports motivation, meaningful learning, and the development of key teaching competencies. This case study contributes practical insights into ICT use in science education. Full article

South Africa’s bioeconomy strategy identifies bio-innovation as a key driver of economic growth and social development, with plant breeding playing a central role in improving food security through the development of high-yielding, resilient, and high-quality crops. However, consumer perceptions of recent advances, particularly new breeding techniques (NBTs), remain underexplored. This study examines South African consumer attitudes towards plant breeding innovations, using a mixed-methods approach. The initial focus group interviews informed the development of a structured quantitative survey examining familiarity, perceptions, and acceptance of plant breeding technologies. Consumer awareness of plant breeding principles was found to be limited, with 67–68% of respondents unfamiliar with both conventional and modern plant breeding procedures. Despite this information gap, consumers expressed conditional support for modern breeding techniques, especially when associated with actual benefits like increased nutritional value, environmental sustainability, and crop resilience. When favourable effects were outlined, support for general investment in modern breeding practices climbed from 45% to 74%. Consumer purchase decisions emphasised price, product quality, and convenience over manufacturing techniques, with sustainability ranked last among the assessed factors. Trust in the sources of food safety information varied greatly, with medical experts and scientists being ranked highly, while government sources were viewed more sceptically. The results further suggest that targeted education could improve customer confidence, as there is a significant positive association (R2 = 0.938) between familiarity and acceptance. These findings emphasise the significance of open communication strategies and focused consumer education in increasing the adoption of plant breeding breakthroughs. The study offers useful insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders working on engagement strategies to facilitate the ethical growth and application of agricultural biotechnology in support of food security and quality in South Africa. This study contributes to a better understanding of South African consumers’ perceptions of plant breeding innovations and food safety. The research findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders in developing effective engagement and communication strategies that address consumer concerns and promote the adoption of products derived from diverse plant breeding technologies. Extensive research in the field of construction safety has predominantly focused on identifying the causes and impacts of construction accidents, evaluating safety plans, assessing the effectiveness of safety education materials, and analyzing relevant policies. However, comparatively limited attention has been given to the systematic formation, management, and utilization of safety-related information and knowledge. Despite significant advancements in information and knowledge management technologies across the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries, their application in construction safety remains underdeveloped. This study addresses this gap by proposing a novel ontology-based framework specifically designed for construction safety management. Unlike previous models, the proposed ontology integrates diverse safety regulations and terminologies into a unified and semantically structured knowledge model. It comprises three primary superclasses covering key areas of construction safety, with an initial focus on fall hazards—one of the most frequent and severe risks, particularly in roofing activities. This domain-specific approach not only improves semantic clarity and standardization but also enhances reusability and extensibility for other risk domains. The ontology was developed using established methodologies and validated through reasoning tools and competency questions. By providing a formally structured, logic-driven knowledge base, the model supports automated safety reasoning, facilitates communication among stakeholders, and lays the foundation for future intelligent safety management systems in construction. This research contributes a validated, extensible, and regulation-aligned ontology model that addresses critical challenges in safety information integration, sharing, and application. Full article

Background/Objectives: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) presents with persistent, heterogeneous symptoms requiring multifaceted care. Although interdisciplinary rehabilitation is increasingly recommended, implementation remains inconsistent. This study aimed to synthesize existing literature and clinician perspectives to construct a practice-informed conceptual framework for interprofessional mTBI rehabilitation. Methods: Structured interviews were conducted with 94 clinicians—including neurologists, neuropsychologists, optometrists, occupational and physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, neurosurgeons, and case managers—across academic, private, and community settings in the United States. Interviews followed a semi-structured format adapted for the NIH I-Corps program and were analyzed thematically alongside existing rehabilitation literature. Results: Clinicians expressed strong consensus on the value of function-oriented, patient-centered care. Key themes included the prevalence of persistent cognitive and visual symptoms, emphasis on real-world goal setting, and barriers such as fragmented communication, reimbursement restrictions, and referral delays. Disciplinary differences were noted in perceptions of symptom persistence and professional roles. Rehabilitation technologies were inconsistently adopted due to financial, training, and interoperability barriers. Equity issues included geographic and insurance-based disparities. A four-domain conceptual framework emerged: discipline-specific expertise, coordinated training, technological integration, and care infrastructure, all shaped by systemic limitations. Conclusions: Despite widespread clinician endorsement of interprofessional mTBI care, structural barriers hinder consistent implementation. Targeted reforms—such as embedding interdisciplinary models in clinical education, expanding access to integrated technology, and improving reimbursement mechanisms—may enhance care delivery. The resulting framework provides a foundation for scalable, patient-centered rehabilitation models in diverse settings. Full article

This paper outlines a methodology for creating an educational and informative communication system for non-specialised audiences in order to preserve and pass on the heritage of ideas and practices adopted in the medieval political and administrative sphere. Through the combined use of digital technologies (such as GISs, 3D modelling and virtual tours), historical sources can potentially reveal how political and administrative aspects affected different areas within the medieval city, not just the main seats of power. Bologna, a prestigious medieval university metropolis, is chosen as a case study because of the remarkable wealth of documentation in its archives from the city’s political culture in the Middle Ages. Written historical sources, including documentary and narrative texts, are among the primary tools employed in the study of European medieval urban communities in general. Documentary sources help us understand and reconstruct the complexities of civic administration, urban policies and the economy, as well as how citizens experience them daily. The involvement of citizens in the political and administrative life of late medieval cities is explored through the management and digital processing of historical documentation. Digital humanities tools can facilitate this analysis, offering a perspective that sheds light on the formation of the pre-modern state. Although digital databases and repositories have significantly contributed to preserving and digitally archiving historical sources, these are often aimed exclusively at the academic level and remain underutilised as privileged didactic and educational tools for a broad audience. Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) face significant challenges in self-managing their chronic condition. Digital health technology (DHT) has become increasingly common and understanding ALHIVs’ preferences is essential for developing interventions tailored to this unique population. This study aimed to explore the preferences of ALHIV regarding the use of DHT for self-management. A qualitative research approach with an exploratory and descriptive design was used. Participants were recruited using a purposive sampling method. Data were gathered through six nominal focus groups with 29 participants at two Community Health Centers in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. The participants were ALHIV aged 15–24 years. Discussions focused on current technology usage and the ranking of desired DHT features. The transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. Three main themes emerged: (1) everyday usage of digital technology where participants frequently used digital devices for communication, social media, and finding information; (2) the role of digital technology in self-management; a strong interest in digital technology that provides medication reminders, health education, and peer support; and (3) factors influencing digital technology, including the cost of data, limited connectivity, and issues of privacy related to participants’ HIV status. The ALHIV showed a strong willingness to use digital platforms for health information, reminders, and peer support, although concerns about connectivity, data cost, and privacy remain. These findings underscore the need for flexible, user-centered approaches when designing DHT interventions for self-management in South Africa. Full article

Scientific culture in pedagogical work involves the integration of scientific principles, values, and practices into education to promote critical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, and curiosity. It fosters an environment where students develop as independent learners, problem-solvers, and informed citizens. Teachers play a key role in cultivating this culture, acting as facilitators and guides who equip students with the tools to think critically and engage with the world scientifically. While often associated with STEM disciplines, scientific literacy extends beyond these areas, emphasizing the integration of scientifically grounded knowledge into all subject areas. To achieve this, teachers must continually enhance their own understanding and skills in scientific thinking. Staying updated with the latest scientific discoveries, critically evaluating information, and applying innovative pedagogical methods are essential. Professional development can provide a vital avenue for teachers to acquire these competencies. Approaches such as reading scientific literature, collaborating with colleagues, and attending specialized training programs can improve teaching strategies and promote scientific thinking in the classroom. This study investigated professional development programs provided for in-service teachers to understand how they contribute to fostering a scientific culture. The researchers collected data from municipalities in Latvia and online resources to summarize the information on the professional development programs provided to in-service teachers. This study examined how elements of scientific culture are reflected in teacher professional development programs in Latvia, using Merton’s CUDOS norms as an analytical framework. The acronym CUDOS refers to four foundational principles of scientific ethos: communalism, universalism, disinterestedness, and organized skepticism. These norms guided the evaluation of whether and how scientific inquiry values are embedded in the design and delivery of training programs for in-service teachers. Using quantitative and qualitative methods for data analysis, it was found that in-service teacher training in Latvia is highly eclectic and often lacks alignment with scientifically grounded principles. There are a lot of programs provided to develop transversal competencies, but very few subject-specific programs are available. The findings highlight the need for more structured and cohesive professional development programs to support in-service teachers in developing competence in cultivating scientific inquiry, nurturing curiosity, and empowering students to navigate an increasingly complex and technology-driven society. These insights offer practical implications for education policymakers and program designers aiming to enhance the scientific orientation of teacher training. By identifying specific gaps in content and alignment with scientific culture, this study provides an original contribution to the discourse on evidence-informed teacher development and supports a more conceptually grounded and equitable approach to lifelong professional learning in Latvia. Advances in pharmaceutical technology have positioned 3D printing and bioprinting as promising tools for developing personalized drug therapies. These innovations may redefine compounding practices by enabling precise, patient-specific drug formulations. Evaluating pharmacists’ readiness to adopt such technologies is therefore becoming increasingly important. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate pharmacists’ knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers regarding the application of 3D printing and bioprinting technologies, as well as their perspectives on the regulation and implementation of these technologies in the context of personalized pharmacy. Materials and Methods: A custom-designed questionnaire was developed for the purposes of this pilot study, based on a review of the existing literature and informed by expert consultation to ensure conceptual relevance and clarity. The survey was conducted between September and December 2024. The data collection instrument comprises three main sections: (1) sociodemographic and professional characteristics, (2) knowledge regarding the applications of 3D printing and bioprinting in pharmacy, and (3) attitudes toward the regulatory framework and implementation of these technologies. Results: A total of 353 respondents participated, and 65.5% of them (n = 231) correctly distinguished between the concepts of “3D printing” and “bioprinting.” More than 25% (n = 88) were uncertain, and 8.5% (n = 30) were unable to differentiate between the two. Regarding the perceived benefits of personalized pharmacy, 83% (n = 293) of participants identified “the creation of personalized medications tailored to individual needs” as the main advantage, while 66% (n = 233) highlighted the “optimization of drug concentration to enhance therapeutic efficacy and minimize toxicity and adverse effects.” Approximately 60% (n = 210) of the pharmacists surveyed believed that the introduction of 3D-bioprinted pharmaceuticals would have a positive impact on the on-site preparation of customized drug formulations in community and hospital pharmacies. Lack of regulatory guidance and unresolved ethical concerns were identified as primary barriers. Notably, over 40% (n = 142) of respondents expressed concern that patients could be subjected to treatment approaches resembling “laboratory experimentation.” Nearly 90% (n = 317) of participants recognized the need for specialized training and expressed a willingness to engage in such educational initiatives. Conclusions: Three-dimensional printing and bioprinting technologies are considered cutting-edge instruments that may contribute to the advancement of pharmaceutical practice and industry, particularly in the field of personalized medicine. However, respondents’ views suggest that successful integration may require improved pharmacist awareness and targeted educational initiatives, along with the development and adaptation of appropriate regulatory frameworks to accommodate these novel technologies in drug design and compounding. Numerous studies, diagnoses, and projects have been carried out in recent years to analyze the low female presence in STEM studies. However, progress has been limited, and the female presence is still low in certain degrees related to information and communication technologies, physics, and engineering. Many of the actions have been aimed at attracting women to these fields, but few have tried to change the culture of these disciplines, which make them a non-place for women. This paper analyses the measures carried out in Spanish public universities, and specifically at the University of Santiago de Compostela, to contribute to making these disciplines a place for women. Computer engineering workshops for primary and secondary education are proposed, incorporating a gender perspective. These transformative activities were highly valuated and welcomed by non-university teachers. The ideas inspiring these initiatives might help both to attract girls to STEM degrees and to generate gender equality environments, in order to change the androcentric culture of this field. Effectiveness, Adoption Determinants, and Implementation Challenges of ICT-Based Cognitive Support for Older Adults with MCI and Dementia: A PRISMA-Compliant Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (2015–2025)

Background: The increasing prevalence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among the elderly population is a global health issue. Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-based interventions hold promises for maintaining cognition, but their viability is affected by several challenges. Objectives: This study aimed to significantly assess the effectiveness of ICT-based cognitive and memory aid technology for individuals with MCI or dementia, identify adoption drivers, and develop an implementation model to inform practice. Methods: A PRISMA-based systematic literature review, with the protocol registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251051515), was conducted using seven electronic databases published between January 2015 and January 2025 following the PECOS framework. Random effects models were used for meta-analysis, and risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklists. Results: A total of ten forms of ICT interventions that had proved effective to support older adults with MCI and dementia. Barriers to adoption included digital literacy differences, usability issues, privacy concerns, and the lack of caregiver support. Facilitators were individualized design, caregiver involvement, and culturally appropriate implementation. ICT-based interventions showed moderate improvements in cognitive outcomes (pooled Cohen’s d = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.14–1.03). A sensitivity analysis excluding high-risk studies yielded a comparable effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.50), indicating robust findings. However, trim-and-fill analysis suggested a slightly reduced corrected effect (Cohen’s d = 0.39, 95% CI: 0.28–0.49), reflecting potential small-study bias. Heterogeneity was moderate (I2 = 46%) and increased to 55% after excluding high-risk studies. Subgroup analysis showed that tablet-based interventions tended to produce higher effect sizes. Conclusions: ICT-based interventions considerably enhance cognition status, autonomy, and social interaction in older adults with MCI and dementia. To ensure long-term scalability, future initiatives must prioritize user-centered design, caregiver education, equitable access to technology, accessible infrastructure and supportive policy frameworks. The growing complexity and risk profile of fire and emergency incidents necessitate advanced training methodologies that go beyond traditional approaches. Live-fire drills and classroom-based instruction, while foundational, often fall short in providing safe, repeatable, and scalable training environments that accurately reflect the dynamic nature of real-world emergencies. Recent advancements in immersive technologies, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), extended reality (XR), and simulation-based systems, offer promising alternatives to address these challenges. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the integration of VR, AR, MR, XR, and simulation technologies into firefighter and incident commander training. It examines current practices across fire services and emergency response agencies, highlighting the capabilities of immersive and interactive platforms to enhance operational readiness, decision-making, situational awareness, and team coordination. This paper analyzes the benefits of these technologies, such as increased safety, cost-efficiency, data-driven performance assessment, and personalized learning pathways, while also identifying persistent challenges, including technological limitations, realism gaps, and cultural barriers to adoption. Emerging trends, such as AI-enhanced scenario generation, biometric feedback integration, and cloud-based collaborative environments, are discussed as future directions that may further revolutionize fire service education. This review aims to support researchers, training developers, and emergency service stakeholders in understanding the evolving landscape of digital training solutions, with the goal of fostering more resilient, adaptive, and effective emergency response systems.
