The generation of fine coal particles during mining and processing presents significant environmental and logistical challenges, particularly in coal-dependent, developing countries like South Africa (SA). This review critically evaluates the technical viability of fine coal briquetting as a sustainable waste-to-energy solution within a SA context, while drawing from global best practices and comparative benchmarks. It examines abundant feedstocks that can be used for valorization strategies, including fine coal and agricultural biomass residues. Furthermore, binder types, manufacturing parameters, and quality optimization strategies that influence briquette performance are assessed. The co-densification of fine coal with biomass offers a means to enhance combustion efficiency, reduce dust emissions, and convert low-value waste into a high-calorific, manageable fuel. Attention is also given to briquette testing standards (i.e., South African Bureau of Standards, ASTM International, and International Organization of Standardization) and end-use applications across domestic, industrial, and off-grid settings. Moreover, the review explores socio-economic implications, including rural job creation, energy poverty alleviation, and the potential role of briquetting in SA’s ‘Just Energy Transition’ (JET). This paper uniquely integrates technical analysis with policy relevance, rural energy needs, and practical challenges specific to South Africa, while offering a structured framework for bio-coal briquetting adoption in developing countries. While technical and economic barriers remain, such as binder costs and feedstock variability, the integration of briquetting into circular economy frameworks represents a promising path toward cleaner, decentralized energy and coal waste valorization. Gastrodia elata, known as Tianma in Chinese, is a valuable medicinal and nutritional resource. The favorable climate of Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, China, facilitates its growth and nurtures rich biocultural diversity associated with Tianma in the region. Local people not only cultivate Tianma as a traditional crop but have also developed a series of traditional knowledge related to its cultivation, processing, medicinal use, and culinary applications. In this study, field surveys employing ethnobotanical methods were conducted in Yiliang County, Zhaotong City, from August 2020 to May 2024, focusing on Tianma. A total of 114 key informants participated in semi-structured interviews. The survey documented 23 species (and forms) from seven families related to Tianma cultivation. Among them, there were five Gastrodia resource taxa, including one original species, and four forms. These 23 species served as either target cultivated species, symbiotic fungi (promoting early-stage Gastrodia germination), or fungus-cultivating wood. The Fagaceae family, with 10 species, was the most dominant, as its dense, starch-rich wood decomposes slowly, providing Armillaria with a long-term, stable nutrient substrate. The cultural importance (CI) statistics revealed that Castanea mollissima, G. elata, G. elata f. flavida, G. elata f. glauca, G. elata f. viridis, and Xuehong Tianma (unknown form) exhibited relatively high CI values, indicating their crucial cultural significance and substantial value within the local community. In local communities, traditionally processed dried Tianma tubers are mainly used to treat cardiovascular diseases and also serve as a culinary ingredient, with its young shoots and tubers incorporated into dishes such as cold salads and stewed chicken. To protect the essential ecological conditions for Tianma, the local government has implemented forest conservation measures. The sustainable development of the Tianma industry has alleviated poverty, protected biodiversity, and promoted local economic growth. As a distinctive plateau specialty of Zhaotong, Tianma exemplifies how biocultural diversity contributes to ecosystem services and human well-being. This study underscores the importance of biocultural diversity in ecological conservation and the promotion of human welfare. Full article

As a pivotal force in the development of hydropower and water conservancy, the evolution of China’s reservoir resettlement policies has garnered significant attention. Over the past seven decades, the nation has made remarkable strides in implementing resettlement initiatives, effectively contributing to poverty alleviation and water resource management. However, emerging challenges, including diminishing opportunities for new reservoir construction, the expiration of post-relocation support policies, and the current emphasis on high-quality development, reveal critical gaps in the existing research. Specifically, macro-level analyses of policy evolution remain scarce, particularly concerning the interrelation between two cornerstone components: land acquisition compensation policies and post-relocation support policies. To address this gap, this paper adopts a holistic historical perspective to analyze the evolution of China’s reservoir resettlement policies across four distinct stages, focusing on the development of two key policies and their interrelations. The findings reveal that each stage of China’s reservoir resettlement policies is characterized by unique thematic priorities, with their interrelations gradually evolving toward greater synergy. Nevertheless, challenges persist, including insufficient per capita farmland allocation and industrial decline in resettlement areas. Accordingly, this paper proposes optimization strategies that encompass policy innovation, multi-stakeholder participation, digital management, and the enhancement of resettlement agencies. China’s experience in fostering policy synergy offers critical insights into institutional evolution while providing valuable references for other countries seeking to refine their reservoir resettlement frameworks. Rural tourism has become a key driver of rural revitalization in China, contributing to poverty alleviation while also irreversibly altering the spatial evolution of rural settlements. In the ecologically fragile regions of northwest China, the rapid expansion of rural tourism destinations has raised ecological concerns, particularly regarding land resource utilization. Therefore, it is crucial to examine the phenomenon of industrial agglomeration in the evolution of rural tourism within the context of tourism-driven poverty alleviation. This study uses Lanzhou City as a case study and employs nearest neighbor analysis and kernel density estimation to analyze the spatial agglomeration patterns of rural tourism destinations, focusing on agglomeration forms, scales, and patterns. Additionally, it explores the spatial coupling distribution between agglomeration levels and influencing factors. The results show that from 1987 to 2022, the development of rural tourism destinations in Lanzhou City has progressed through several stages, from initial emergence to rapid growth. The form of industrial agglomeration has shifted from a dispersed to a clustered distribution, gradually expanding from urban centers to peripheral areas. The spatial agglomeration follows a multi-core hierarchical point-axial diffusion model, forming multiple core and sub-core agglomeration zones of varying scales. This transformation is primarily driven by geographical factors, transportation accessibility, and the presence of high-quality tourist attractions. However, a comparison of land use changes and ecological vulnerability indices over multiple periods indicates that the industrial agglomeration of rural tourism has led to irregular land use patterns and ecosystem instability. Finally, based on the complex relationship between rural tourism development, industrial agglomeration, and ecological sustainability, this study proposes strategies for the development of rural tourism in Lanzhou City, with the aim of providing valuable insights for the development of rural tourism in ecologically fragile regions of China. Geothermal resources are considered a clean energy source, and their development plays a key role in achieving sustainable development. This energy contributes to environmental protection, energy security, and economic growth, while also helping to alleviate energy poverty. Qinghai Province, rich in geothermal resources, holds significant potential for development. First, this study evaluated the geothermal resources in the uplifted mountainous regions of Qinghai Province using the volumetric method and analyzed their spatial distribution. Next, the degree of geothermal resource endowment was measured, and the relationship between geothermal resources and industrial structure was analyzed. Finally, the Vector Autoregression (VAR) model and impulse response function were applied to assess the impact and duration of geothermal resources on changes in the industrial structure from 2000 to 2020. Geothermal resources in Qinghai Province exhibit significant regional variation, with the northern and western regions being particularly rich in geothermal resources, peaking at 3.58 × 1017 J in Banma County. Geothermal resources in Qinghai are predominantly utilized for power generation, averaging 42.20% of energy consumption. The interplay between geothermal resource use and industrial structure is intensifying, notably in secondary and tertiary sectors. Initially restrictive, the influence of industrial structure on geothermal resource use is projected to become facilitative as clean energy technologies advance. This study revealed the relationship between geothermal resources and the local industrial structure in Qinghai Province, providing a scientific basis for the sustainable and efficient development and utilization of these resources. It contributed to the long-term sustainability of geothermal resource exploitation. Full article

The vast urban–rural income gap (URIG) is a global challenge, particularly severe in underdeveloped regions. While the income-generating effects of transportation improvements are widely accepted, their income distribution effects remain controversial. This study focuses on national poverty-alleviated counties in central and western China, using a mixed-methods approach to quantitatively test the non-linear relationship between highway improvements and the URIG and qualitatively analyze the reasons behind the threshold effects of regional economic development levels. The main findings are as follows: first, regional economic development levels exhibit a double-threshold effect, with the impact of highway improvements shifting from widening to narrowing the URIG after surpassing the second thresholds. Second, inter-regional highways have a limited impact on narrowing the URIG, while intra-regional highways significantly reduce the URIG once crossing their thresholds, reflecting the distinct functions of different highway classes. Third, the heterogeneity analysis reveals that the impact of highway improvements on the URIG varies depending on the external environment surrounding residents, including both the indirect and direct environments. Fourth, from the perspective of rural labor transfer to non-farm employment, regional economic development levels create threshold effects in two ways: for local employment, they influence non-agricultural industry growth and job distribution following highway improvements, affecting rural laborers’ participation; for migrant employment, they impact human capital investment, influencing rural laborers’ skills and wage returns after highway improvements. This paper looks into the impact of China’s new rural land reform, the three rights separation policy (TRSP), on Chinese farmers’ income. Based on data collected from 360 rural households in Anhui Province, China, 2021, this paper constructed the influence pathways of the TRSP on household income and estimated the effects along different pathways using the structural equation model (SEM) model. It showed that through expanding the planting scale and promoting resource-use efficiency, the new land tenure system can indirectly increase transfer-in household income. However, the TRSP has a significant negative direct effect on transfer-out households’ income, and only a slight impact on transferring rural labor to other industries or relaxing the liquidity constraint. In short, the TRSP’s effect on income gains is more prominent in transfer-in households than transfer-out ones, which in the long run would lead to an increased income gap, more so if transfer-out households lack easy access to non-farm employment. Our findings suggest that public authorities should respect farmers’ autonomy in land transfer decisions and pay special attention to labor transfer in poverty alleviation. Meanwhile, widening income disparities among different groups should be heeded while implementing local governments’ service roles. Full article

Quinoa is the only single plant that can meet all the nutritional needs of human, and its potential for feed utilization has been continuously explored, becoming a prosperous industry for poverty alleviation. In order to further tap the feeding value of whole quinoa, develop quinoa as a feed substitute for conventional crops such as corn, and improve its comprehensive utilization rate, this experiment analyzed the silage quality and mycotoxin content of mixed silage of whole-plant quinoa (WPQ) with whole-plant corn (WPC) or stevia powder(SP) in different proportions, and further improved the silage quality of mixed silage by using two lactic acid bacteria preparations (Sila-Max and Sila-Mix). The quality, microbial population, and mycotoxin levels of quinoa and corn silage, as well as that of the mixed silage of quinoa and stevia, were evaluated using single-factor analysis of variance. The impact of various lactic acid bacteria preparations on the quality of whole-quinoa and whole-corn mixed silage was investigated through two-factor analysis of variance. WPQ and WPC were mixed at the ratio of 5:5 (QB5), 6:4 (QB6), 7:3 (QB7), 8:2 (QB8), 9:1 (QB9) and 10:0 (QB10). SP was mixed with WPQ at the supplemental levels of 0.2% (QB10S2), 0.4% (QB10S4), 0.6% (QB10S6), 0.8% (QB10S8) and 1.0% (QB10S10). After 60 days of silage, the silage indexes, the number of harmful microorganisms, and the mycotoxin levels were measured, to explore the appropriate ratio of mixed silage. The membership function analysis showed that the quality of mixed silage of WPQ with SP was better, and the optimal addition amount of SP was 0.6%. The results of Max and Mix on the quality improvement test of WPQ with WPC mixed silage showed that the two lactic acid bacteria formulations increased CP and AA content, and reduced NH3-N/TN; pH was significantly lower than the control group (p < 0.01), and LA was significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.01). The microbial count results showed that the addition of lactic acid bacteria preparation significantly reduced the number of molds and aerobic bacteria, and the effect of Mix was better than that of Max. When the mixing ratio was between QB7 and QB10, mold was not detected in the lactic-acid-bacteria preparation groups. Max and Mix significantly reduced the levels of mycotoxins, both of which were far below the range of feed safety testing, and 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that the silage microbiota varied with different mixing ratios and whether lactic acid bacteria preparations were used. Max and Mix increased the relative abundance of Firmicutes, with Mix having a more significant effect, especially in the QB6 (65.05%) and QB7 (63.61%) groups. The relative abundance of Lactobacillus was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05). The relative abundance of Enterobacteriaceae and Streptococcus were negatively and positively correlated with the addition level of quinoa, respectively. Comprehensive analysis showed that adding 0.6% SP to the WPQ and using Mix in mixed silage of WPQ and WPC with the proportion of WPQ no less than 70% had the best silage effect, and was more beneficial to animal health. Facilitating the sustained and stable growth of farmers’ income is crucial for achieving sustainable development in forest regions. As an emerging driving force, the digital economy has demonstrated substantial potential in enhancing farmers’ income and promoting regional economic prosperity in forest areas. Based on survey data from 1043 households across 10 counties in Guizhou Province, China, this study empirically examined the direct and indirect effects of digital economy participation on income growth among farmers in forest regions. The findings revealed that, first, participation in the digital economy significantly contributed to income growth for these households. This effect remained robust across various estimation methods, restricted sample tests, and when replacing dependent variables. Second, forestry management and its diversification played a mediating role in the relationship between digital economy participation and farmers’ income. Participation in the digital economy indirectly influenced income growth by fostering forestry management activities and their diversification. Third, the heterogeneity analysis indicated that digital economy participation had a significant positive impact on the income growth of pure farming households, part-time farming households, and households that had previously escaped poverty. This discovery underscored the unique role of the digital economy in alleviating poverty and preventing its recurrence. The conclusions of this study provide essential theoretical and practical guidance for empowering forestry development through the digital economy and advancing the digital transformation of the forestry industry. More critically, this research presents a novel pathway for the deep integration of the digital economy with forestry, jointly fostering income growth for farmers in forest regions, which holds significant implications for achieving rural sustainable development. China plays a significant role in the global fishing industry. The small-scale fisheries (SSFs) operating along its coast have made noteworthy and invaluable contributions in the areas of poverty alleviation, protein provision, social equity, and overall socioeconomic development. Coastal small-scale fishing management is a persistent challenge for all fishing nations, including China. In recent years, China has made significant strides in adopting scientific and refined approaches to fishery management in this sector. This paper provides an overview of the development of China’s coastal fishery management practices, including changes in policies, methods, and modes since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. To address these challenges, this research seeks to enhance the governance system of small-scale coastal fisheries by assessing values from three dimensions: society, economy, and ecology. Edible mushroom products, encompassing both cultivated and wild varieties, are highly favored by consumers due to their rich nutritional profiles, including significant levels of proteins and amino acids. These mushrooms have extensive applications across the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries, making the edible mushroom industry a vital component of global poverty alleviation efforts. Taking China as an example, the country produces over 45 million tons of edible mushrooms annually, accounting for 94.01% of the world’s total production, thereby establishing itself as the leading global producer of edible mushrooms. However, alongside the rapid expansion of this industry, concerns have emerged regarding counterfeit products and incidents of poisoning resulting from the consumption of toxic wild mushrooms. As follows, to advance the development and integrity of the mushroom production and processing industry: (1) This study presents the situation of counterfeit edible mushrooms and elucidates the factors contributing to the production of fraudulent products from both subjective and non-subjective perspectives. (2) We provide a detailed introduction to 22 varieties of freshly cultivated edible mushrooms and commonly encountered wild edible mushrooms in the Chinese consumer market, proposing the application of DNA barcoding, environmental DNA analysis, and other technologies for the future authentication of counterfeit mushroom products. (3) Concurrently, we present an overview of mushroom poisoning incidents in China from 2010 to 2023, emphasizing the challenges in mitigating the risks associated with wild mushroom consumption and preventing food poisoning, thereby necessitating heightened consumer caution. (4) Finally, we offer four recommendations aimed at ensuring the healthy, stable, and sustainable growth of the edible mushroom industry. Full article

This text describes a study that investigates the mechanics, environmental benefits, and potential challenges of paper recycling machines. It highlights the importance of these machines in promoting a more sustainable future, and how they align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs aim to address issues such as climate change, land use, responsible consumption and production, and poverty alleviation by promoting sustainable economies. Significant losses occur in the fresh produce supply chain, spanning from the harvest to postharvest stages, with considerable wastage during production and consumption. Developing predictive models for overall postharvest losses is crucial to inform growers and industry stakeholders, facilitating better decision-making and resource management. These models play a pivotal role in supporting governments, as well as global food and agricultural organizations, in their efforts to alleviate poverty and ensure food and nutrition security for the growing human population. This review discusses opportunity targets for predicting total postharvest losses and addresses strategies for effective waste management with the aim of promoting sustainable agricultural production and enhancing global food security. Poverty remains a significant global challenge, particularly in severely impoverished areas where balancing eco-civilization and economic growth is crucial. This study aims to analyze livelihood assets, determine appropriate strategies, and establish an eco-compensation model based on ecological vulnerability in Longnan City. We developed a livelihood evaluation index system using the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework and entropy weight method to assess the vulnerable portfolio of livelihood assets. We examined poverty causes and proposed targeted alleviation measures. Additionally, we created an “Eco-Compensation Model of Longnan City” incorporating the Sloping Land Conversion Program, key industries exit compensation, and cross-provincial water compensation based on incentive and punitive mechanisms. Our findings reveal that severely impoverished areas in Longnan City are primarily in the central, southern, and northwestern regions. Poverty is driven by unfavorable natural conditions, frequent natural disasters, regional economic marginalization, inadequate infrastructure, and a limited agricultural structure. The evaluation shows that natural capital in the five areas is lower than the national average level. We propose targeted measures for different vulnerable livelihood portfolios. The eco-compensation model provides a scientifically calculated compensation standard, offering a crucial funding source for implementing targeted poverty alleviation strategies. Full article

Can Cashew Value Chain Industry Improve Food Security: An Empirical Study from The Gambia

Food security is the most critical issue to address in The Gambia, and cashew production and its respective value chain provide opportunities to improve the quality of livelihood for many families. This study conducts value chain and SWOT analyses to provide information that could improve development opportunities and strengthen linkages to food security within the cashew industry in The Gambia’s Kombo East district, West Coast region. The results show that the cashew value chain in the study site is characterized by a large number of producers and relatively few intermediaries working through five marketing channels. The results demonstrate that farmers received 66% of the final market value, but there is a lack of farmer organizations, which severely affected farmers’ free and fair access to markets to sell their products. So, there is an immediate need to establish farmers’ cooperatives to reduce intermediaries in the value chain and obtain fair product prices. Moreover, the result of SWOT analysis revealed that the strategic position of the cashew industry is an advantageous ‘holds and maintains’ position, indicating a market penetration, product development, or modifying existing products, and a vertical integration strategy could increase revenue, alleviate poverty, and reduce food insecurity. Adopting the recommended market-based approaches will result in higher producer prices and incomes, thereby reducing poverty and food insecurity. The study contributes to the literature by focusing on the cashew chain value in The Gambia, added value opportunities through transformation, better markets, improved products, and other alternatives to promote global value creation, and the dynamics of the food system, which can promote food security and sustainable rural development.
