Globally, beef customers are seeking verified information regarding the carbon footprint (CF) of the products they buy. As a major supplier of premium grass-finished and natural grain beef supplying markets world-wide, JBS Southern Australia developed a certified Farm Assured (FA) program, launched in 2013, to provide quality beef from independently audited suppliers. This study conducted a life cycle assessment (LCA) with ‘cradle to farm gate’ and ‘cradle to processor gate’ boundaries, using two reference flows—(i) one kilogram (kg) of liveweight (LW) at the farm gate, and (ii) one kg of boxed beef at the processor gate—to assess the greenhouse gas (GHG) CF for beef produced in southern Australia. This study is the first to integrate individual animal carcass characteristics with brand level CF analysis at scale. This was achieved by developing a uniquely comprehensive dataset, with primary data supplied by 200 farms and individual animal data provided for 514,922 heads of cattle. The mean farm gate CF was 11.7 (standard deviation 0.4) kg carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) kg−1 LW, and the mean boxed beef CF was 24.1 kg CO2-e kg−1 boxed beef. The study’s novel approach to data collection allowed for the CF to be stratified by region, carcass characteristics, farm of origin and product brand. Analysis revealed that the lowest farm-average and individual animal CFs were 29% and 48% lower than the supply chain average, respectively. These findings indicate that the CFs of beef produced from grass and natural grain-finished production systems in southern Australia were comparable or lower than the CFs of beef entering similar markets. Background: Stress is regarded as one of the natural and unavoidable elements of human life and, at the same time, one of the key determinants of physical and mental health. Stress is not a new phenomenon; it has accompanied human beings since the beginning of life as a reaction to everyday challenges. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and severity of stress, as well as stress-coping strategies, in a group of patients treated for oncological reasons. Methods: The study included 108 patients hospitalized at the Independent Public Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Lublin, Poland, in the following departments: the 2nd Department of General, Gastroenterological and Gastrointestinal Oncological Surgery; the Department of Oncological Surgery; and the Department of Hemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation. Three standardized questionnaires were used: the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), the Type D Personality Scale (DS-14), and the “How Do I Cope” Inventory (JSR). Statistical analysis was performed with IBM SPSS Statistics, version 25; statistical significance was set at α < 0.05. Results: Patients treated for oncological reasons constitute a group exceptionally exposed to stress, which accompanies them at every stage of the disease, from diagnosis, through treatment, to the terminal phase. In patients whose treatment resulted in remission, stress related to the possibility of recurrence accompanies every follow-up examination and every worrying symptom. Given the range of situations that provoke stress, the overall level of stress in this group can be regarded as high. Stress-coping strategies among oncological patients are shaped by multiple factors, including selected sociodemographic characteristics; taking into account the diversity of these factors, coping strategies varied considerably across the sample. The level of coping strategies was not associated with age or sex but was significantly associated with educational attainment. Conclusions: Oncological patients experience a high and pervasive level of stress that persists throughout diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. Stress-coping strategies are heterogeneous, are not determined by age or sex, but are shaped by education, indicating a need for individualized psychosocial and educational support integrated into routine oncological care. Background: Device-independent, lifestyle-integrated active pursed-lip diaphragmatic breathing (PLDB) may overcome respiratory rehabilitation barriers in chronic heart failure (CHF). This retrospective real-world study evaluated its prognostic association with functional capacity, quality of life (QoL), and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Methods: A total of 58 CHF patients (NYHA II–IV) were categorized by 6-month post-discharge PLDB adherence into a Respiratory Training Group (RTG; n = 20) and Control Group (n = 38). Functional, structural, QoL metrics, and MACE outcomes were analyzed. Results: After 6 months, the RTG demonstrated significant intra-group improvements in 6 min walk test (6MWT) distance (302.00 [243.60, 408.15] m to 386.00 [339.50, 439.00] m, p = 0.006; baseline-adjusted between-group gain: +76.16 m), handgrip strength (p = 0.046), LVEF (p = 0.003), and scores on the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) (p < 0.001), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) (p = 0.010), and Self-rating Somatic Symptom Scale-China (SSS-CN) (p = 0.004). Post-intervention, the RTG outperformed controls in handgrip strength (p = 0.012), MLHFQ (p = 0.001) and SSS-CN (p = 0.020). The RTG exhibited a significantly lower MACE incidence (5.0% vs. 42.1%, p = 0.003) and superior MACE-free survival (log-rank p = 0.005). Multivariable Cox regression confirmed high PLDB adherence was independently associated with a lower MACE risk (adjusted HR = 0.103, 95% CI: 0.014–0.779, p = 0.028). Conclusions: High adherence to a 6-month lifestyle-integrated PLDB program correlates with clinically meaningful improvements in exercise capacity, cardiac function, and QoL, and is independently associated with a lower risk of short-term MACE in CHF patients. Alphonse Mucha’s oeuvre is frequently categorized as a formalist paradigm of ornamentation within the Art Nouveau movement. This study, however, contends that Mucha’s signature Q Formula is far from a mere aesthetic redundancy or a utilitarian embellishment; rather, it manifests as Autonomous Ornament—an autonomous generative process and an inherent rhythm. Adopting a synchronic structural perspective that transcends linear historical causality, this research frames ornament as a dynamic relational medium connecting individual perception with collective evolution across geocultural boundaries. With Theosophy serving as a historical mediation and synthesizing Rudolf Arnheim’s psychology of visual perception with Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy of the ornamental refrain (ritornello), this paper traces the cross-cultural construction of the Q Formula—from Mucha’s Moravian Catholic roots to the avant-garde Theosophical milieu of Paris. Through a horizontal comparative analysis with contemporary fin-de-siècle artists—specifically contrasting Gustav Klimt’s ornamental dissolution and Aubrey Beardsley’s ironic fragmentation—the study underscores Mucha’s distinct integrative strategy. Furthermore, it demonstrates a profound structural homology in topological energy between the Q Formula and the Eastern Kālacakra Mandala. Within this pure and vital ornamental logic, the circular main body acts as a centripetal anchor referencing Emptiness (Śūnyatā), while the boundary-crossing media serve as a metaphor for centrifugal Dependent Origination (Pratītyasamutpāda) and worldly manifestation through clothed repetition. Such ornamental rhythms collapse the classical hierarchy between structure and surface. Amidst the pervasive anxiety of fin-de-siècle industrialization, these forms exerted a visual soothing function, providing deep emotional and psychological efficacy. Mucha’s ornamental schemata reveal how repetitive and structural rhythms successfully transmuted traditional religious paradigms into channels for the internal integration of the modern subject. The paper thus reaffirms ornament as a form of critical imagination and an independent artistic force, which not only reshapes the psychological homeostasis of the modern subject but also constructs a profound resonance between form and life within a cross-cultural context. Background/Objectives: Personal listening devices (PLDs) have become ubiquitous in modern daily life, raising growing concerns about their cumulative impact on auditory health. This study examined the prevalence and patterns of PLD use and the independent predictors of perceived hearing handicap among Saudi adults. Methods: A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted between November 2025 and January 2026 among 2018 adults (aged 18 years or older) residing in Saudi Arabia. Participants completed a self-administered online questionnaire assessing sociodemographic characteristics, PLD usage patterns, and hearing handicap measured by the Revised Hearing Handicap Inventory (RHHI-18). Results: Participants had a mean age of 29 ± 12 years, 54.0% were female, and 93.9% were Saudi nationals. Earphones and headphones were used by 51.1% and 47.7% of participants, respectively, and 68.1% reported current use of at least one personal listening device. The mean RHHI-18 total score was 10 ± 18, and 23.0% of participants scored within the hearing handicap range (mild-to-moderate: 16.2%; significant: 6.8%). All PLD use categories were independently associated with higher RHHI-18 scores relative to non-use: headphones only (beta = 4.58; p < 0.001), earphones only (beta = 3.29; p = 0.002), and combined use (beta = 2.87; p = 0.005). Further independent correlates of higher RHHI-18 scores were stroke (beta = 21.51; p < 0.001), diabetes mellitus (beta = 8.64; p < 0.001), hypertension (beta = 4.84; p = 0.006), non-Saudi nationality (beta = 3.92; p = 0.014), male sex (beta = 3.09; p < 0.001), and older age (beta = 0.16; p = 0.002). Conclusions: PLD use is highly prevalent among Saudi adults and is independently associated with greater perceived hearing handicap. These findings support public health efforts promoting safe listening practices at the population level. Full article

Background: There is limited evidence regarding sarcopenia in Thailand, especially in southern provinces when applying the AWGS-2019 criteria. Objective: The present study aimed to determine the prevalence and independent risk factors of sarcopenia among community-dwelling older adults in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 246 adults aged 60 years or older. Sarcopenia was defined using the AWGS-2019 criteria. Data collection comprised the Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF), Abbreviated Mental Test (AMT), and physical performance assessments. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent predictors, incorporating both categorical and continuous variables. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia was 27.64%. Multivariable analysis identified age of ≥80 years or older (AOR = 4.25, 95% CI: 1.12–16.14; p = 0.033) and body mass index (BMI) below 18.5 kg/m2 (AOR = 3.58, 95% CI: 1.20–10.65; p = 0.022) as significant risk factors. Protective factors included attainment of secondary education or higher (AOR = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.02–0.78; p = 0.025), BMI of 23.0 kg/m2 or greater (AOR = 0.19, 95% CI: 0.09–0.40; p < 0.001), engagement in regular physical activity (AOR = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.08–0.54; p = 0.001), and normal nutritional status (AOR = 0.24, 95% CI: 0.08–0.71; p = 0.010). Further continuous analysis confirmed that each 5-year increase in age significantly increased the risk of sarcopenia (AOR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.14–2.03; p = 0.005), while each 1 kg/m2 increase in BMI was associated with a protective effect (AOR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.69–0.88; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Sarcopenia is common among older adults in Southern Thailand. Both categorical and continuous analyses identify advanced age as a primary risk factor. In contrast, higher education, optimal body mass index, regular physical activity, and adequate nutrition serve as important protective factors. These results highlight the importance of community-based screening and targeted interventions that address nutritional adequacy and structured exercise to enhance quality of life in this population. A Quality-Aware Multimodal Reliability Framework for Health Assessment and Remaining Useful Life Prediction of Cold-Region Tunnels

This study proposes a quality-aware multimodal framework for health-state assessment and remaining useful life (RUL) prediction of cold-region tunnels. The framework integrates structural-response, environmental, apparent-defect, and engineering-inspectiondata, with the apparent-defect pathway jointly encoding raw images through a convolutional neural network and structured defect variables. Five data-quality dimensions-completeness, accuracy, consistency, timeliness, and traceability are incorporated intoreliability-guided multimodal fusion. Their base weights were re-audited through two rounds of expert consultation, each comprising 323 valid questionnaires. The Cr-weighted group analytic hierarchy process yielded weights of 0.0548, 0.1326, 0.1372, 0.2279, and 0.4474, respectively, with a group consistency ratio of 0.0455; the ranking remained stable under one-at-a-time +10% perturbations. In the primary tunnel case study, the framework achieved 89.7% health-state accuracy, a 6.3% RUL mean absolute percentage error, and 84.1% accuracy under Gaussian perturbation of standardized numerical inputs at a noise scale of 0.15. To further examine the reliability contribution of data-quality information, an independent field panel comprising 600 segment-month observations from 25 segments across three operational tunnels was evaluated using target-excluded specifications, two-way fixed effects, leave-one-tunnel-out validation, multiple baseline models, and five fixed random seeds. A one-standard-deviation increase in lagged quality instability was associated with a 0.0151 increase in the subsequent state-error index (95% CI: 0.0118-0.0184; p < 0.001). In cross-tunnel random-forest tests, incorporating quality information increased mean R2 from 0.8277 to 0.8323 for state-error prediction and from 0.8517 to 0.8673 for RUL-contraction prediction, with both improvements significant in paired tests (p < 0.001). Split-conformal intervals achieved mean cross-tunnel coverage of 95.8% and 95.9%, respectively. These findings demonstrate that data-quality information provides a modest but statistically supported improvement in cross-tunnel reliability, whilethe principal contribution lies in integrating auditable data governance, reliability-aware fusion, and engineering decision support within a unified tunnel health-management framework. Predicting the remaining useful life (RUL) of lithium-ion batteries is essential as it relates to the safety, reliability, and maintenance of both electric vehicles and energy storage systems. While machine learning algorithms have greatly enhanced the accuracy of prediction, a lot of the models available today still have some major flaws including redundant features, poor performance due to non-optimized model settings, and the necessity of the complete degradation process of the system. In this study, we develop a machine learning framework using particle swarm optimization (PSO) to perform hyperparameter tuning and feature optimization to improve lithium-ion battery RUL prediction. The framework allows for the automatic determination of the key degradation indicators, resulting in the optimization of the learning model and enhancement of both the accuracy and interpretability of the predictions. Furthermore, the framework is designed to be employed in an early-cycle learning environment wherein only the first 30% of battery discharge cycles are utilized in the model training. This method is intended to mimic the constraints of real-world applications in which complete lifecycle data is unavailable. Under a properly nested evaluation protocol, the results indicate that the model achieves a mean R2 of 0.354 ± 0.157 and RMSE of 19.13 ± 1.39 using only 30% of degradation cycles, compared to a mean R2 of 0.922 ± 0.014 and RMSE of 18.10 ± 1.11 under full-cycle training across five independent evaluations. While early-cycle prediction shows reduced and more variable explanatory power due to the smaller sample size, the model maintains reasonable error magnitude, supporting its potential utility for early diagnosis of lithium-ion batteries. The effectiveness of the framework is confirmed by feature importance analysis, evaluation of optimization convergence and multi-metric error assessment. In conclusion, the framework offers a highly interpretable and effective solution for predicting lithium-ion battery RUL, in alignment with the emerging data-driven approaches to battery management systems. Background/Objectives: Osteoarthritis of the hip and/or knee is a major contributor to pain, disability, and reduced quality of life. The aim of this study was to provide preliminary validity and reliability evidence for a Greek adaptation of the Quality Indicators for Physiotherapy Management of Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis (QUIPA) questionnaire. Methods: This cross-sectional methodological study involved cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric evaluation of the Greek QUIPA in 90 adults aged 45–65 years with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis attending private physiotherapy clinics. Participants completed the questionnaire twice, seven days apart. Structural validity was explored using exploratory factor analysis, and exploratory subgroup analyses by age and sex were also conducted. Internal consistency, categorical item-level test–retest reliability, total-score test–retest reliability, and floor/ceiling effects were assessed. Results: Exploratory factor analysis of the initial 18-item pool suggested a three-factor 12-item solution explaining 51.5% of the total variance, with eigenvalues of 3.11, 1.58, and 1.49. Internal consistency was borderline for the total score (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.675) and the first factor (alpha = 0.662), and poor for the second (alpha = 0.424) and third (alpha = 0.598) factors. Item-level observed agreement ranged from 79.7% to 97.8%, with Cohen’s kappa values ranging from 0.580 to 0.887. Total-score test–retest reliability was good (ICC = 0.829, 95% CI = 0.748–0.896), although the total proportion-positive score increased by 5.6 percentage points at retest. Ceiling effects were observed for Q1, Q7, and Q8. Conclusions: The present study provides preliminary validity and reliability evidence for a derived 12-item Greek QUIPA short-form model. However, given the marginal sampling adequacy, low-to-moderate communalities, six-item reduction from the original 18-item questionnaire, categorical item properties, and borderline-to-poor internal consistency of some factors, the findings should be interpreted cautiously. The intricate relationship between the heart and the brain has transitioned from historical, cardio-centric theories to a modern, circuit-based, bi-directional framework known as neurocardiology. This review provides a comprehensive anatomical, physiological, and clinical synthesis of the bidirectional heart–brain axis, highlighting how disruptions in one organ systematically impact the other. Structurally, the heart–brain axis operates as a closed-loop feedback network. Vagal parasympathetic control dominates at rest, driven by an asymmetrical fiber distribution where sensory afferents actively supply interoceptive data to the brainstem. Hemodynamically, cerebral blood flow delivery is linked to cardiac output in an age-dependent fashion with the related vascular dysfunction. Clinically, brain-to-heart pathologies like acute brain injury trigger life-threatening catecholamine surges, neuroinflammation, and myocardial stunning, including Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Conversely, heart-to-brain pathways reveal that atrial fibrillation and heart failure can independently trigger cardioembolic stroke, long-term neuroinflammation, and a profound, progressive burden of cognitive decline. The heart and brain are inexorably linked through complex structural, mechanical, and paracrine pathways. Ameliorating clinical outcomes demands integrated cross-specialty diagnostic screening, digital rhythm monitoring, and holistic neurocardioprotective therapeutic strategies. Full article

Introduction: Melanoma is a chronic disease that significantly affects patients’ daily functioning and emotional well-being. Beyond its somatic burden, it often leads to substantial changes in quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to assess illness acceptance among melanoma patients and examine its associations with selected clinical characteristics (disease stage, pruritus and time since diagnosis), psychological distress (depression and anxiety) and QoL. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between June 2025 and February 2026 at two tertiary oncology centers in Poland. Initially, 191 consecutive melanoma patients were recruited, of whom 162 (58.6% men; mean age 59.8 ± 13.7 years) were included in the final analysis (response rate: 84.8%). Participants completed validated questionnaires assessing illness acceptance (Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS)), depression (PHQ-9, HADS-D), anxiety (GAD-7, HADS-A), and QoL (DLQI). Statistical analyses were performed, with p < 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: The mean AIS score was 13.28 ± 7.50 points, indicating a remarkably low level of illness acceptance. In the multivariable linear regression analysis, greater depressive symptoms (HADS-D: β = −1.16, 95% CI −1.79 to −0.54; p < 0.001) and more advanced melanoma stage (β = −1.52, 95% CI −2.92 to −0.12; p = 0.034) were independently associated with lower illness acceptance. In addition, illness acceptance showed significant correlations with depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and dermatology-related QoL, whereas no significant associations were observed with most evaluated demographic and clinical variables. Conclusions: Patients with melanoma demonstrated remarkably low illness acceptance. Depressive symptoms and more advanced melanoma stage were independently associated with lower illness acceptance. These findings support the integration of psychological assessment into comprehensive melanoma care. Full article

Accurate interpretation of radiation sensor decay data is important for environmental monitoring, site remediation, radiation metrology, detector quality assurance, and nuclear data evaluation. When the original gamma spectrometry records are unavailable, a published decay plot may be the only source that can be reanalyzed independently. This study presents a reproducible reduced-data workflow for testing half-life estimates from a digitized 198Au decay dataset. A weighted exponential fit to the digitized data points reproduces the published room-temperature half-life, indicating that the main decay scale is retained in the figure-level dataset. The analysis then tests how the fitted result changes under plausible figure-level effects, including baseline-like offsets, time-axis reconstruction, finite-window leverage, and ratio-based robustness checks using pairwise summaries and Steiner’s most frequent value statistics. The no-offset fit is locally well constrained, but small constant offsets can shift the fitted half-life because the normalization, decay constant, and residual baseline are partly degenerate over the limited time window. Toy Monte Carlo diagnostics show that some estimator shifts are expected for finite-window exponential data. This study does not revise recommended nuclear data or replace the original experiment. Instead, it shows how published radiation sensor decay data can be tested for reproducibility, identifiability, and sensitivity to analysis choices when only reduced or figure-level information is available. Background: Heart failure is a chronic and progressive condition that substantially affects patients’ physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. Although the clinical burden of heart failure is well documented, limited qualitative evidence exists regarding how Saudi adults experience and interpret the condition within their cultural, familial, and religious contexts. This study explored the experiences of Saudi adults living with heart failure and their perceptions of its impact on health-related quality of life. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study informed by an interpretivist perspective was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 25 Saudi adults diagnosed with heart failure. Participants were recruited from specialized heart failure and cardiac outpatient clinics within a tertiary medical city in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Four themes were identified: (1) emotional distress and fear, (2) loss of independence and increased dependency, (3) social role disruption, and (4) coping and adaptation strategies. Participants described significant psychological burden, reduced autonomy, and changes in family and social roles following their diagnosis. Conclusions: Heart failure was experienced as more than a physical illness, affecting participants’ emotional well-being, social identity, family relationships, and spiritual life. The findings underscore the importance of holistic and culturally responsive care that addresses psychological, social, spiritual, and family-related needs alongside symptom management. Full article

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the interaction between periodontal disease, sleep quality, and quality of life and to investigate the effects of the presence and severity of periodontal disease on individuals’ sleep patterns and oral health-related quality of life. Materials and Methods: A total of 195 individuals were included in the study. Participants’ sociodemographic data and dental habits were recorded. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while the impact of oral health on quality of life was evaluated using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14). Results: A significant difference was observed in OHIP-14 scores among the groups (p < 0.001), with median values of 6, 13, and 22 in the healthy, gingivitis, and periodontitis groups, respectively. OHIP-14 scores also increased significantly with the stage and grade of periodontitis (p < 0.001). PSQI scores differed significantly among the groups (p < 0.001), with median values of 4, 8, and 10 in the healthy, gingivitis, and periodontitis groups, respectively. However, no significant differences were observed in total PSQI scores across the stages or grades of periodontitis. In addition, a strong positive correlation was found between total PSQI and OHIP-14 scores (r = 0.63, p < 0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis confirmed that periodontal status remained independently associated with both PSQI and OHIP-14 scores after adjusting for age, sex, education level, and smoking status, with periodontitis showing the strongest association in both models (PSQI: B = 5.03; OHIP-14: B = 15.80, both p < 0.001). Conclusions: A significant relationship was identified between periodontal disease, sleep quality, and oral health-related quality of life. Furthermore, the strong positive correlation between sleep quality and oral health-related quality of life suggests that deterioration in sleep quality may be associated with poorer oral health-related quality of life. These findings indicate that periodontal health is not limited to oral tissues but is also closely associated with an individual’s overall well-being. Full article

Apple harvesting is transitioning from conventional manual picking to harvest-assist platforms, vibration-based mechanical systems, and selective robotic harvesting. For fresh-market apples, harvesting efficiency cannot be evaluated independently of mechanical damage, postharvest quality deterioration, and food-safety risks. Compression bruising, impact bruising, abrasion, cuts, punctures, and stem-end tearing can disrupt the peel, cuticle, and cellular structure to different degrees, triggering reactive oxygen species accumulation, membrane lipid peroxidation, cell-wall degradation, enzymatic browning, and increased respiration and ethylene metabolism. These responses may subsequently be amplified during storage, transportation, and processing, leading to softening, decay, shortened shelf life, and potential patulin contamination. Centered on the damage–safety trade-off, this review compares the technical characteristics and typical damage profiles of manual harvesting, vibration-based mechanical harvesting, harvest-assist platforms, and selective harvesting robots; explains how mechanical damage is transmitted from cellular physiological responses to food-quality and safety outcomes; and proposes conceptual frameworks for a Damage Risk Index and a Harvest Suitability Score. The central objective of intelligent apple harvesting should therefore be to improve efficiency while preserving appearance, texture, nutritional quality, storage stability, and food safety.
