The aim of this study was to determine the effects of hygiene (H) and nano-color pigment (NCP) modifications on hardness, glossiness, and adhesion strength of some surface coating materials produced specifically for use in wooden toys. For this purpose, H- and NCP-modified polyurethane (PU) and waterborne (WBV) varnishes were applied to specimens prepared from Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis L.) and Oriental plane (Platanus orientalis L.) woods; Oriental beech, birch (Betula pendula), and poplar (Populus deltoides) plywood; and medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Then, hardness, glossiness, and adhesion values were determined. Results indicated that the highest values were obtained for hardness in PU and PU*NCP applied to MDF; for glossiness in WBV*H applied to birch plywood and MDF; and for adhesion strength in WBV and PU*H applied to beech. H and NCP modifications have significant effects on hardness, glossiness, and adhesion strength. As a result, it was determined that hardness and glossiness increased with H modification and decreased with NCP, especially glossiness. Furthermore, it was determined that H and NCP decreased the adhesion strength. Future studies comparing natural antibacterial effects of different wood species with various coating types will contribute to the development of products that are safe for children and sustainable. White spot lesions (WSLs) are demineralized lesions of the enamel that form in the presence of bacterial plaque, affecting the aesthetics by modifying the refractive index of the enamel, giving the characteristic “chalky” aspect. They have various causes, including fixed orthodontic treatments, improper hygiene, fluorosis and genetic factors. Background/Objectives: Considering the latest need for dental aesthetics and the popularization of fixed orthodontic treatments, the need to effectively treat WSLs has increased. The objective of this research is to review the development of WSLs and their treatment with resin infiltration. Methods: The PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar databases were searched for relevant reviews and studies. Out of all, 56 were included in this research. Results: Prophylactic measures, such as fluorized toothpaste and varnishes, have limited results. Standard caries treatment is too invasive as it removes too much healthy enamel for obturation retentivity. The resin infiltration resin process does not require drilling or tooth structure loss, making it a painless and minimally invasive treatment. The resin used has a refractive index comparable to that of healthy enamel, consequently restoring aesthetics and ensuring the prevention of caries evolvement. The treatment involves five important steps: prophylaxis, acid demineralization, alcohol drying, resin infiltration and UV light curing. Depending on the clinical case, the demineralization and drying steps may need to be repeated. Conclusions: Infiltrations with resin are painless and well tolerated by patients. Out of all minimally invasive treatments, they have an immediate satisfactory outcome, with results stable for a minimum of 45 months. Full article

The purpose of this study was to radiographically and clinically assess, after six and twelve months, the additive effect of light-curable resin-modified glass ionomer (LCRMGI) varnish on preventive standard-of-care measures (sodium fluoride varnish, oral hygiene instructions, and dietary counseling) for the treatment of non-cavitated proximal carious lesions in primary molars. This prospective, split-mouth, randomized clinical trial recruited 5–8-year-old children with at least one pair of bilateral non-cavitated proximal carious lesions in the enamel or outer third of the dentin. The lesions were randomized into one of two groups: experimental (which received LCRMGI varnish with the preventive standard-of-care measures) or control (which received the preventive standard-of-care measure). A total of 47 out of 53 participants, with 70 out of 80 pairs, completed the study. Radiographically, lesions in the experimental groups were more likely to regress after six (OR = 3.25) and twelve months (OR = 2.67), but it was not statistically significant (p = 0.052 and p = 0.055, respectively). Clinically, the experimental group showed significantly higher regression rates than the control group after six and twelve months (p = 0.041 and p = 0.003, respectively). The LCRMGI varnish demonstrated promising potential as an adjuvant to preventive standard-of-care measures in promoting regression and inhibiting the progression of non-cavitated proximal carious lesions. This comprehensive community health intervention aimed to improve the oral health and reduce the incidence of dental caries in Tabuk schoolchildren. The program supports the public health pyramid that provides a framework to improve health and included creating and evaluating a school oral health surveillance system, applying fluoride varnish and dental sealants on high- and medium-caries risk children, and providing treatment for existing diseases. In a pilot phase, 48 children (26 males 22 females; mean age 6.42; dmft 9.33, Decayed, Missing, or Filled Primary and Permanent Teeth (DMFT) 3.27) received the dental services, both treatment and prevention. Three hundred seventy-eight composite resin or resin-modified light-cured glass ionomer restorations were placed. One-hundred and eighteen teeth received pulp therapy (pulpotomy or pulpectomy), ten of which received stainless steel crowns. A total of 72 teeth were extracted due to caries. To understand the effects of dental disease on children, as perceived by parents, an oral health-related quality of life survey was completed and analyzed. Results found an underestimation of the role the teeth play, particularly primary teeth, in the general health and wellbeing of the child. The program’s main evaluation effort focused on the process and outcome objectives, including the number of children received care, number of teeth received restorations and sealants, and number of children received fluoride varnish, etc. Analyzing the effect of the program on oral hygiene revealed an improvement in oral health, as a direct result of oral health educational sessions and one-to-one counseling. There is an urgent need to expand the program to include all primary schools. Full article
