Urban wildlife conservation is emerging as a critical component of sustainable city ecosystems. Rather than simply increasing tree abundance or species richness, conservation management should focus on key species. In this research, Xishan Forest Park in Beijing was chosen as a case study. Our aim was to identify keystone taxa critical for avian foraging and nesting during the breeding season. We performed a network analysis linking bird species, their diets, and nest plants. Dietary components were detected using DNA metabarcoding conducted with avian fecal samples. Nest plants were identified via transect surveys. Two indices of the network, degree and weighted mean degree, were calculated to evaluate the importance of the dietary and nest plant species. We identified 13 bird host species from 107 fecal samples and 14 bird species from 107 nest observations. Based on the degree indices, fruit trees Morus and Prunus were detected as key food sources, exhibiting both the highest degree (degree = 9, 9) and weighted mean degree (lnwMD = 5.21, 4.63). Robinia pseudoacacia provided predominant nesting sites, with a predominant degree of 7. A few taxa, such as Styphnolobium japonicum and Rhamnus parvifolia, served dual ecological significance as both essential food sources and nesting substrates. Scrublands, as a unique habitat type, provided nesting sites and food for small-bodied birds. Therefore, targeted management interventions are recommended to sustain or enhance these keystone resource species and to maintain the multi-layered vertical vegetation structure to preserve the diverse habitats of birds. The integration of digital twins (DTs) with intelligent traffic systems (ITSs) holds strong potential for improving real-time management in smart cities. However, securing digital twins remains a significant challenge due to the dynamic and adversarial nature of cyber–physical environments. In this work, we propose TwinFedPot, an innovative digital twin-based security architecture that combines honeypot-driven data collection with Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL) for robust and adaptive cyber threat detection without requiring prior sampling. The framework leverages Inverse Federated Distillation (IFD) to train the DT server, where edge-deployed honeypots generate semantic predictions of anomalous behavior and upload soft logits instead of raw data. Unlike conventional federated approaches, TwinFedPot reverses the typical knowledge flow by distilling collective intelligence from the honeypots into a central teacher model hosted on the DT. This inversion allows the system to learn generalized attack patterns using only limited data, while preserving privacy and enhancing robustness. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy and F1-score, establishing TwinFedPot as a scalable and effective defense solution for smart traffic infrastructures. Environmental consciousness has become increasingly important in the professional sports industry as it often hosts large-scale events that have significant environmental impacts. While the economic benefits of locating stadiums in city centers have been discussed, especially in terms of neighborhood revitalization, there has been limited empirical research on whether stadium relocation affects the transportation choices of spectators and reduces carbon dioxide emissions. Through a case study of a Japanese professional football club that relocated its home stadium from the suburb to the city center, this study quantitatively elucidated the change in spectators’ transportation choices and resulting reductions in carbon emissions achieved by the stadium relocation. Analysis indicated variations in behavioral changes among groups based on their loyalty levels to the club. It also highlighted the varying influence of the different residential areas within the metropolitan area on the modal choice. This study demonstrates the potential contribution of stadium relocation to sustainable urban planning by providing empirical evidence of these behavioral changes and policy implications for restructuring the urban public transportation network. This study critically examines the rapid proliferation of megaprojects across the Arab region, with a focus on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, where large-scale developments are strategically deployed to reshape global economic influence and enhance geopolitical positioning. Megaprojects, characterized by their vast scale, substantial financial investment, and long-term impact, remain a subject of intense academic debate. While much of the literature questions their economic viability, citing frequent cost overruns and misalignment with localized urban priorities, megaprojects continue to emerge worldwide. Governments and developers promote megaprojects as catalysts for foreign investment, tourism growth, and enhancing the global stature of host countries and regions. Beyond financial and economic imperatives, megaprojects are fundamentally shaped by socio-spatial, socio-political, and capital accumulation dynamics, each playing a critical role in their justification and implementation. These interconnected forces influence the prioritization of large-scale developments, often reinforcing their persistence as dominant urban and infrastructural strategies despite well-documented uncertainties and risks. The study employs a comparative case study approach to analyze two high-profile megaprojects: Masdar City in Abu Dhabi and The Line in NEOM, Saudi Arabia. By examining their underlying motivations, political, social, and economic dynamics, and projected success factors, the study aims to provide an evidence-based assessment of the forces driving these large-scale developments and their potential for completion and long-term viability. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on megaproject development by offering a nuanced, evidence-based analysis of the socio-political and economic forces shaping large-scale urban initiatives in the Arab region. By critically evaluating the motivations and viability of Masdar City and The Line, this research provides valuable insights that can inform future scholarly inquiries into the governance, planning, and long-term sustainability of megaprojects. The Study offers a strategic framework for policymakers, urban planners, and investors to make more informed, balanced decisions that align large-scale developments with broader economic and social priorities, mitigating risks associated with cost overruns, feasibility challenges, and socio-spatial disparities. The world is characterised by the growing volumes and flow of goods, which, amid benefits to economic development, result in negative externalities affecting the sustainability of cities. Although numerous studies have analysed the locational patterns of logistics facilities in cities, further research is required to examine their real estate patterns and trends. The aim of the paper is, therefore, to analyse the value of land accommodating logistics facilities in the City of Cape Town municipality, South Africa. Given the lack of dedicated geo-spatial data, logistics firms were searched on Google Maps, utilising a combination of aerial photography and street view imagery. Three main attributes of land parcels hosting logistics facilities were thereafter captured from the municipal cadastral information: property extent, street address, and property number. The latter two were used to extract the 2018 and 2022 property market values from the valuation rolls on the municipal website, followed by statistical, spatial, and geographically weighted regression (GWR) analyses. Zones near the central business district and seaport, as well as areas with prime road-based accessibility, had high market values, while those near the railway stations did not stand out. However, GWR yielded weak relationships between market values and the locational variables analysed, arguably showing a disconnect between spatial planning and logistics planning. Towards augmenting sustainable logistics, it is recommended that relevant stakeholders strategically integrate logistics into spatial planning, and particularly revitalise freight rail to attract investment to logistics hubs with direct railway access. Fragments of urban forests can host a remarkable diversity of insects, even in environments that have been greatly transformed. This study evaluates the diversity, abundance, and composition of insects that belong to seven families in four urban forest fragments near Panama City, i.e., Ciudad del Saber (CDS), Parque Natural Metropolitano (PNM), Corozal (COR), and Albrook (ALB). A total of 2038 individuals were collected via Malaise traps and categorized into 403 morphospecies, 75 genera, and 43 subfamilies. The highest richness of morphospecies was observed in CDS (223), whereas PNM exhibited the highest abundance of individuals (862). The alpha diversity indices (Shannon-Wiener > 4.3; Margalef > 21; Pielou ≈ 1.0; and Simpson’s inverse > 0.95) reflected communities that were characterized by high levels of diversity and equity. The level of similarity observed among the fragments was moderate (Diserud–Odegaard index = 0.543), thus indicating differences among the sites evaluated as part of this research in terms of their taxonomic composition. These results provide evidence concerning the variability of entomological communities in tropical urban landscapes and the role of forest fragments as possible reservoirs of biodiversity. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), an emerging infectious tick-borne viral disease, is increasingly affecting human beings worldwide. SFTS monitoring has been carried out since 2010 in mainland China. Since 2022, an increase in local cases has been noted in the central coastal plain region of Hebei Province. This study aimed to identify the endemic region in the central coastal plain region by epidemiological characteristics, antibody surveillance and molecular characterization. Case data were obtained from the Chinese Disease Control and Prevention Information System. Serum samples from suspected or clinically diagnosed cases, the indigenous healthy population and native domesticated animals were collected for laboratory tests, along with ticks in the central coastal plain region of Hebei Province, China. The local cases were mainly distributed in Cangzhou City, located at the central coastal plain region of Hebei Province. The 0.68% of IgM antibody detection rate and 1.71% of IgG antibody detection rate in this study showed the potential existence of subclinical or mild infections in Cangzhou. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all sequences from patients, ticks and sheep clustered within the F subtype, exhibiting a close evolutionary relationship and the possible circulation of SFTSV having established among animal hosts and ticks in Cangzhou. These findings first identify the natural focus of SFTSV in the central plain region of Hebei Province, highlighting enhanced surveillance measures for preventing and controlling SFTSV. Full article

The growing importance of the symbolic dimension in urban globalisation has led cities to compete not only in economic terms, but also in cultural and symbolic arenas. In this context, events and festivals have emerged as strategic tools for building reputation, attracting global audiences, and projecting soft power. This study introduces an updated version of the Synthetic Index of Events and Festivals (SIEF), which evaluates the positioning of 150 cities based on their capacity to host significant cultural and sporting events. Using a multi-methodological approach that combines an extensive literature review with a statistical analysis of data from various international organisations, the findings reveal a complex urban hierarchy. Globally multifunctional cities coexist with secondary or globalising ones that gain symbolic visibility through thematic specialisation. This study also identifies synergies between different event types and provides evidence of thematic clusters within the global urban network. The results underscore the importance of incorporating cultural indicators into global urban studies and position events as a privileged lens through which to examine the symbolic reconfiguration of the contemporary urban system. Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most widely distributed intracellular parasites worldwide, which can infect humans and a wide range of warm-blooded animals including sheep, with felines serving as its definitive host. T. gondii infection in sheep can lead to premature births, abortions and stillbirths, causing significant economic losses to the sheep industry. Sheep farming has become a key pillar of the agricultural economy in Shanxi Province, North China, but little is known about T. gondii infection in sheep in this province. In the present study, a total of 755 sheep tissue samples (682 muscle tissue samples and 73 lymphatic tissue samples) were collected from different markets in 10 different cities of Shanxi Province. The genomic DNA of all samples was extracted and the B1 gene of T. gondii was amplified by PCR. The B1 gene-positive samples were genotyped at 12 genetic markers employing the multilocus nested PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (Mn-PCR-RFLP). The molecular prevalence of T. gondii infection in sheep tissues in Shanxi Province was 20.5% (155/755). The T. gondii genotype ToxoDB#9 was identified in one positive T. gondii sample, with complete genotyping at all 12 genetic markers based on Mn-PCR-RFLP. This is the first report of molecular prevalence and genotype of T. gondii infection in sheep in Shanxi Province. These results reveal the widespread distribution of T. gondii in sheep in Shanxi, which is of significant public health importance. Full article

As critical hubs for long-distance transportation, railway passenger stations (RPSs) significantly influence energy conservation and CO2 mitigation. This study investigates the spatiotemporal patterns and driving factors of CO2 emissions across 247 Chinese RPSs (2014–2023), proposing region-specific decarbonization strategies. The key findings include: (1) Emissions increased universally during 2014–2023, with severe cold zones and developed cities hosting the most high-emission RPSs; (2) purchased thermal energy dominated the emissions in severe cold/cold zones, while purchased electricity prevailed in other zones; (3) the heating area (HA) was a primary emission driver, whereas the percentage of lighting energy consumption (PLEC) served as a key constraint, as shown by correlation and PCA analyses; (4) CO2 emissions in severe cold zones exhibited strong correlations with heating-related factors, whereas emissions in other zones were predominantly linked to energy structure-related factors. These findings provide region-specific, actionable strategies to support CO2 emission reduction planning for RPSs. Full article

The 2020 wildfire season in the Western U.S. was historic in its intensity and impact on the land and atmosphere. This study aims to characterize satellite retrievals of carbon monoxide (CO), a tracer of combustion and signature of those fires, from two key satellite instruments: the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) and the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI). We evaluate them during this event and assess their synergies. These two retrievals are matched temporally, as the host satellites are in tandem orbit and spatially by aggregating TROPOMI to the CrIS resolution. Both instruments show that the Western U.S. displayed significantly higher daily average CO columns compared to the Central and Eastern U.S. during the wildfires. TROPOMI showed up to a factor of two larger daily averages than CrIS during the most intense fire period, likely due to differences in the vertical sensitivity of the two instruments and representative of near-surface CO abundance near the fires. On the other hand, there was excellent agreement between the instruments in downwind free tropospheric plumes (scatter plot slopes of 0.96–0.99), consistent with their vertical sensitivities and indicative of mostly lofted smoke. Temporally, TROPOMI CO column peaks were delayed relative to the Fire Radiative Power (FRP), and CrIS peaks were delayed with respect to TROPOMI, particularly during the intense initial weeks of September, suggesting boundary layer buildup and ventilation. Satellite retrievals were evaluated using ground-based CO column estimates from the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) and the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON), showing Normalized Mean Errors (NMEs) for CrIS and TROPOMI below 32% and 24%, respectively, when compared to all stations studied. While Normalized Mean Bias (NMB) was typically low (absolute value below 15%), there were larger negative biases at Pasadena, likely associated with sharp spatial gradients due to topography and proximity to a large city, which is consistent with previous research. In situ CO profiles from AirCore showed an elevated smoke plume for 15 September 2020, highlighted consistency between TROPOMI and CrIS CO columns for lofted plumes. This study demonstrates that both CrIS and TROPOMI provide complementary information on CO distribution. CrIS’s sensitivity in the middle and lower free troposphere, coupled with TROPOMI’s effectiveness at capturing total columns, offers a more comprehensive view of CO distribution during the wildfires than either retrieval alone. By combining data from both satellites as a ratio, more detailed information about the vertical location of the plumes can potentially be extracted. This approach can enhance air quality models, improve vertical estimation accuracy, and establish a new method for assessing lower tropospheric CO concentrations during significant wildfire events. A new genus of Ectinosomatidae is recorded in association with an Ascidia from a permanent submerged coral community in Barra Beach, Salvador City, Bahia State (Brazil). The new taxon belongs to a smaller group of genera in the family Ectinosomatidae based on the geniculate maxilla and the prehensile first swimming leg. This group is composed of Bradiellopsis, Chaulionyx, Halophytophilus, and Sigmatidium. The new genus differs from the others due to distinct aspects of the mandible gnathobasis, which features sharp processes on the pars incisiva and pars molaris followed by a short spinulated area and a serrulated seta; the presence of a two-segmented endopod of the first swimming leg, with the first endopodal segment longer than all exopodites combined; and a short, quadratic second endopodal segment with two strong curved claws. In addition, it differs from other genera due to the distinct armature of the first to fourth swimming legs and the presence of fused exopod and baseoendopod on the fifth swimming leg. Cruscollatus gen.nov. lives specifically within the digestive tract of Eudistoma vannamei Millar, 1977, an Ascidia species endemic to northeastern Brazil. This study reports the first documented association between a harpacticoid copepod of the family Ectinosomatidae (order Harpacticoida) and ascidian hosts (Ascidia). Full article

Isolation and Identification of Colletotrichum nymphaeae as a Causal Agent of Leaf Spot on Rhododendron hybridum Ker Gawl and Its Effects on the Ultrastructure of Host Plants

Rhododendron hybridum Ker Gawl, a widely cultivated horticultural species in China, is highly valued for its ornamental and medicinal properties. However, with the expansion of its cultivation, leaf spot disease has become more prevalent, significantly affecting the ornamental value of R. hybridum Ker Gawl. In this study, R. hybridum Ker Gawl from the Kunming area was selected as the experimental material. The tissue isolation method was employed in this study to isolate pathogenic strains. The biological characteristics of the pathogens were determined using the mycelial growth rate method. The pathogens’ influence on the host plant’s ultrastructure was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Colletotrichum nymphaeae was identified as the pathogen implicated in the development of leaf spot disease in R. hybridum Ker Gawl across three regions in Kunming City through the integration of morphological traits and phylogenetic analyses of multiple genes (ITS, ACT, GAPDH, HIS3, CHS1, and TUB2). Its mycelial growth is most effective at a temperature of 25 °C. pH and light have relatively minor effects on the growth of mycelium. The preferred carbon and nitrogen sources were identified as mannitol and yeast extract, respectively. Additionally, TEM observations revealed significant damage to the cell structure of R. hybridum Ker Gawl leaves infected by the pathogen. The cell walls were dissolved, the number of chloroplasts decreased markedly, starch granules within chloroplasts were largely absent, and the number of osmiophilic granules increased. This is the first report of leaf spot disease in R. hybridum Ker Gawl caused by C. nymphaeae. The results of this study provide valuable insights for future research on the prevention and control of this disease. Full article

Groundwater Vulnerability in the Kou Sub-Basin, Burkina Faso: A Critical Review of Hydrogeological Knowledge

Groundwater resources in the Kou sub-basin of southwestern Burkina Faso play a critical role in supporting domestic water supply, agriculture, and industry in and around Bobo-Dioulasso, the second-largest city in Burkina Faso. This study synthesizes over three decades of research on groundwater vulnerability, recharge mechanisms, hydrochemistry, and residence time across the region’s sedimentary aquifers. The Kou basin hosts a complex stratified system of confined and unconfined aquifers, where hydrochemical analyses reveal predominantly Ca–Mg–HCO3 facies, alongside local nitrate (0–860 mg/L), iron (0–2 mg/L) and potassium (<6.5 mg/L–190 mg/L) contamination. Vulnerability assessments—using parametric (DRASTIC, GOD, APSU) and numerical (MODFLOW/MT3D) models—consistently indicate moderate to high vulnerability, especially in alluvial and urban/peri-urban areas. Isotopic results show a deep recharge for a residence time greater than 50 years with deep groundwater dating from 25,000 to 42,000 years. Isotopic data confirm a vertically stratified system, with deep aquifers holding fossil water and shallow units showing recent recharge. Recharge estimates vary significantly (0–354 mm/year) depending on methodology, reflecting uncertainties in climatic, geological, and anthropogenic parameters. This review highlights major methodological limitations, including inconsistent data quality, limited spatial coverage, and insufficient integration of socio-economic drivers. To ensure long-term sustainability, future work must prioritize high-resolution hydrogeological mapping, multi-method recharge modeling, dynamic vulnerability assessments, and strengthened groundwater governance. This synthesis provides a critical foundation for improving water resource management in one of Burkina Faso’s most strategic aquifer systems. Full article
