The integration of 5G technology with cloud and edge computing is redefining the digital landscape by enabling ultra-fast connectivity, low-latency communication, and scalable solutions across diverse application domains. This paper investigates the synergistic impact of 5G on cloud-to-edge architectures, emphasizing its transformative role in revolutionizing sectors such as healthcare, smart cities, industrial automation, and autonomous systems. Key advancements in 5G—including Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC), and Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC)—are examined for their role in enabling real-time data processing, edge intelligence, and IoT scalability. In addition to conceptual analysis, the paper presents simulation-based evaluations comparing 5G cloud-to-edge systems with traditional 4G cloud models. Quantitative results demonstrate significant improvements in latency, energy efficiency, reliability, and AI prediction accuracy. The study also explores challenges in infrastructure deployment, cybersecurity, and latency management while highlighting the growing opportunities for innovation in AI-driven automation and immersive consumer technologies. Facial emotion recognition has become increasingly important in healthcare, where understanding delicate cues like pain, discomfort, or unconsciousness can support more timely and responsive care. Yet, recognizing facial expressions in real-world settings remains challenging due to varying lighting, facial occlusions, and hardware limitations in clinical environments. To address this, we propose TriViT-Lite, a lightweight yet powerful model that blends three complementary components: MobileNet, for capturing fine-grained local features efficiently; Vision Transformers (ViT), for modeling global facial patterns; and handcrafted texture descriptors, such as Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG), for added robustness. These multi-scale features are brought together through a texture-aware cross-attention fusion mechanism that helps the model focus on the most relevant facial regions dynamically. TriViT-Lite is evaluated on both benchmark datasets (FER2013, AffectNet) and a custom healthcare-oriented dataset covering seven critical emotional states, including pain and unconsciousness. It achieves a competitive accuracy of 91.8% on FER2013 and of 87.5% on the custom dataset while maintaining real-time performance (~15 FPS) on resource-constrained edge devices. Our results show that TriViT-Lite offers a practical and accurate solution for real-time emotion recognition, particularly in healthcare settings. It strikes a balance between performance, interpretability, and efficiency, making it a strong candidate for machine-learning-driven pattern recognition in patient-monitoring applications. In an increasingly globalized context marked by growing professional mobility, establishing shared standards for assessing nursing competencies is essential. The licensure examination represents a critical gateway between academic preparation and professional practice. However, significant ambiguity remains regarding what competencies are assessed and how this assessment is conducted internationally. This scoping review aimed to map the international literature on nursing licensure examinations by comparing frameworks and domains, performance levels, and assessment tools to identify similarities and differences in the core competencies required for entry into practice. The review followed Arksey and O’Malley’s methodological framework. Comprehensive searches were conducted across PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, ERIC, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, and OpenGrey databases. Studies addressing competency frameworks, performance levels, and assessment tools in undergraduate nursing licensure were included. Twenty-three studies were analyzed. The most frequently cited framework was ‘Client Needs’. Competency domains commonly addressed patient needs, professional roles, and healthcare settings. The dominant performance level was cognitive, typically assessed through multiple-choice questions; practical skills were often evaluated via ‘bedside tests’. Despite variations in frameworks and domains, cognitive performance expectations and assessment tools showed some consistency. These findings underscore the need for a context-sensitive, internationally adaptable framework to promote fairness and support nurse mobility. Full article

Blood transfusion remains vital in healthcare but poses risks, particularly from transfusion-transmissible viral infections (TTVIs). This study aims to determine the seroprevalence of HIV, HBV, and HCV among blood donors in Borgou (Benin) in 2023. This prospective, cross-sectional study involved voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors recruited via mobile campaigns and at a fixed site from January to December 2023. Screening for HIV, HBV, and HCV was performed using fourth-generation ELISA (Biorad®). Data analysis used SPSS with Chi-square test of independence (p < 0.05), and multiple logistic regression identified independent risk factors. Among 9646 donors, 87.80% were male (sex ratio 7.19), mostly aged 18–24 (55.93%), with students forming the largest group (58.67%). Mobile units collected 70.80% of donations; 52.60% were repeat donors. Overall TTVI seroprevalence was 9.35%, with HBV (6.29%) most common, followed by HCV (1.78%) and HIV (1.28%). Chi-square tests revealed significant associations between serostatus and donor status, donation site, and occupation, but not sex. Logistic regression identified independent risk factors: age, donor status, and donation site were significantly associated with HIV infection; male sex, older age, occupation, and donor status predicted HBV infection; and only donor status was significantly associated with HCV infection. These findings highlight the need for targeted recruitment and awareness strategies to improve transfusion safety. Full article

The integration of robotics and mobile networks (5G/6G) through the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) is revolutionizing telemedicine, enabling remote physician participation in scenarios where specialists are scarce, where there is a high risk to them, such as in conflicts or natural disasters, or where access to a medical facility is not possible. Nevertheless, touching a human safely with a robotic arm in non-engineered or even out-of-hospital environments presents substantial challenges. This article presents a novel IoRT approach for healthcare in or from remote areas, enabling interaction between a specialist’s hand and a robotic hand. We introduce the IoRT-in-hand: a smart, lightweight end-effector that extends the specialist’s hand, integrating a medical instrument, an RGB camera with servos, a force/torque sensor, and a mini-PC with Internet connectivity. Additionally, we propose an open-source Android app combining MQTT and ROS for real-time remote manipulation, alongside an Edge–Cloud architecture that links the physical robot with its Digital Twin (DT), enabling precise control and 3D visual feedback of the robot’s environment. A proof of concept is presented for the proposed tele-robotic system, using a 6-DOF manipulator with the IoRT-in-hand to perform an ultrasound scan. Teleoperation was conducted over 2300 km via a 5G NSA network on the operator side and a wired network in a laboratory on the robot side. Performance was assessed through human subject feedback, sensory data, and latency measurements, demonstrating the system’s potential for remote healthcare and emergency applications. The source code and CAD models of the IoRT-in-hand prototype are publicly available in an open-access repository to encourage reproducibility and facilitate further developments in robotic telemedicine. Prevalence of Hearing Impairment in Saudi Arabia: Pathways to Early Diagnosis, Intervention, and National Policy

Background: Hearing impairment is a significant public health issue globally, yet national data for Saudi Arabia remain sparse. Methods: Using data from the 2017 Disability Survey, we analysed 12 hearing-related indicators across 13 administrative regions. Descriptive statistics, logistic regression, cluster analysis, and residual mapping were applied to identify socio-demographic disparities and service gaps. Findings: Among 20,408,362 Saudi nationals, about 1,445,723 (7.1%) reported at least one functional difficulty. Of these, 289,355 individuals (1.4%) had hearing impairment, either alone or with other difficulties—229,541 (1.1%) had hearing impairment combined with other disabilities, while 59,814 (0.3%) had only hearing impairment. Females and males were equally affected. Notably, educational attainment and marital status significantly influenced device uptake; less-educated and divorced individuals were particularly underserved. Regionally, southern provinces (Al-Baha, Jazan, and Najran) demonstrated the highest unmet need due to geographic barriers, limited audiological resources, and socioeconomic constraints, reflecting compounded risks from consanguinity and rural isolation. Cluster analyses identified provinces requiring urgent attention, recommending mobile audiology units, tele-audiology services, and means-tested vouchers to enhance coverage. Conclusions: Despite Saudi Arabia’s existing public audiology services and a National Newborn Hearing Screening programme achieving 96% coverage, substantial gaps remain in follow-up care and specialist distribution, underscoring the necessity for systematic workforce tracking and enhanced rural incentives. International evidence from India and Brazil underscores the feasibility and cost-effectiveness (approximately USD 5200/QALY) of these recommended interventions. Implementing targeted provincial strategies, integrating audiological screening into routine healthcare visits, and aligning resource allocation with the WHO and Vision 2030 benchmarks will significantly mitigate hearing impairment’s health, social, and economic impacts, enhancing the quality of life and societal inclusion for affected individuals. Purpose: This systematic review aims to evaluate the utility of mobile health (mHealth) applications in uro-oncology, hereafter referred to as mHealth apps, specifically examining their potential to improve patient care, symptom management, and communication in genitourinary cancer treatment. Methods: Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a comprehensive systematic review was conducted focusing on mHealth applications for patients with genitourinary cancers. Results: The review analyzed 29 studies, which revealed that mHealth apps demonstrated potential in uro-oncology patient care. Key findings included effective symptom monitoring, enhanced decision support, and improved patient education. The applications were found to be feasible and well-accepted by patients. However, implementation challenges were identified, including technical barriers, variations in app quality, and unequal access to digital healthcare technologies. This review systematically categorized mHealth interventions into three functional domains—symptom management, decision support, and personalized care—and identified critical implementation barriers including digital inequity, high risk of bias, and app quality variability. Conclusions: Mobile health applications demonstrate promise in revolutionizing uro-oncology care. Future research should prioritize developing comprehensive applications that address a broader range of urological cancers, enhance patient–clinician communication, and undergo rigorous evaluation. Collaborative efforts among researchers, clinicians, and app developers are crucial to overcome existing limitations and maximize the potential of these innovative healthcare tools. Full article

Background: The increasing integration of automated transport drones into logistics networks presents transformative potential for addressing contemporary logistics challenges, particularly in last-mile delivery, healthcare, disaster response, urban mobility, and postal services. However, their effective integration into varied logistics contexts remains hindered by infrastructure, regulatory, and operational limitations. This study aims to explore how drone-based logistics systems can be systematically planned and evaluated across diverse operational environments. Methods: A structured literature review was conducted, employing thematic synthesis to analyze current research on drone logistics. The analysis focused on identifying the key planning dimensions and interrelated components that influence the deployment of drone-based transport systems. Results: The review identified seven central planning dimensions: areas of application, system components, transport configuration, geographic areas, optimization and analysis methods, logistical planning, and performance assessment. These dimensions inform a conceptual framework designed to guide the planning and assessment of drone logistics networks. Conclusions: While existing studies contribute valuable insights into route optimization and drone deployment strategies, they often overlook integrative approaches that account for societal and environmental factors. The study emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and context-specific planning frameworks to enhance the sustainable and effective implementation of drone-based logistics systems. Gas sensors based on graphene have gained considerable attention because of graphene’s remarkable properties, such as its extensive surface area, impressive electrical conductivity, and exceptional mechanical strength. This review critically analyzes recent developments in functionalization strategies designed to enhance the sensitivity, selectivity, and stability of graphene-based sensors. It discusses various chemical, physical, and hybrid functionalization methods, illustrating how surface alterations affect graphene’s interaction with target gas molecules. The paper also investigates the fundamental sensing mechanisms, including charge transfer, carrier mobility modulation, and Schottky barrier modification, to provide a thorough understanding of sensor response characteristics. Additionally, it highlights emerging applications in environmental monitoring, healthcare diagnostics, and industrial safety, demonstrating the transformative potential of these sensors in real-world settings. Finally, the review addresses challenges concerning reproducibility, long-term stability, and large-scale production, while also offering future insights on utilizing innovative nanomaterials and artificial intelligence to advance the next generation of graphene-based gas sensing technologies. Pain management in multiple trauma patients presents a complex clinical challenge due to competing priorities such as hemodynamic instability, polypharmacy, coagulopathy, and the urgency of life-saving interventions. In this context, peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs) are increasingly recognized as a valuable asset for their role in managing pain in patients with multiple traumatic injuries. By reducing reliance on systemic opioids, PNBs support effective pain control and facilitate early mobilization, aligning with enhanced recovery principles. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the use of PNBs in the context of polytrauma, focusing on their analgesic efficacy, integration within multimodal analgesia protocols, and contribution to improved functional outcomes. Despite these advantages, clinical application is limited by specific concerns, including the potential to mask compartment syndrome, the risk of nerve injury or local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST), and logistical barriers in acute trauma settings. Emerging directions in the field include the refinement of ultrasound-guided PNB techniques, the expanded use of continuous catheter systems, and the incorporation of fascial plane blocks for anatomically complex or multisite trauma. Parallel efforts are focusing on the development of decision-making algorithms, improved risk stratification tools, and integration into multimodal analgesic pathways. There is also growing emphasis on standardized clinical protocols, simulation-based training, and patient education to enhance safety and consistency in practice. As evidence continues to evolve, the long-term impact of PNBs on functional recovery, quality of life, and healthcare utilization must be further explored. With thoughtful implementation, structured training, and institutional support, PNBs may evolve into a cornerstone of modern trauma analgesia. Full article

Background/Objectives: Older adults (65+) are the fastest growing age group in Canada, comprising 18.8% of the country’s population. During the COVID-19 pandemic, use of virtual care, including telehealth and tele-medicine, increased dramatically among older adults in Canada who often face higher health risks, mobility limitations, and many barriers to accessing healthcare. Despite the rapid expansion in virtual care, no systematic review has focused specifically on virtual care among older adults in Canada. This review aims to explore the factors influencing virtual care adoption and the experiences of older Canadians during the pandemic through a systematic review. Methods: Conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, the review involved a comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, ESCBOHost, and Web of Science on 2 May 2025, yielding 281 unique citations. After screening and applying eligibility criteria, 15 studies employing quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods designs, with sample sizes ranging from 15 to 2,282,798, were included and appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Results: The review identified three domains of factors and the ways in which each factor shapes older adults’ virtual care experiences: (1) personal factors influencing virtual care use and demand (e.g., age, education, language, income, immigration status, community sizes), (2) resource factors impacting virtual care adoption (e.g., technology access, support), and (3) varying virtual care experiences among older adults (e.g., in assessment and communication efficacy, privacy, care quality, convenience, safety, and costs). Conclusions: This review highlights the complexities of virtual care engagement among older adults and underscores the need for inclusive, tailored strategies to improve the accessibility and effectiveness of virtual care delivery in both pandemic and post-pandemic contexts. The growing use of mobile health (mHealth) technologies adds complexity and risk to the healthcare environment. This paper presents a multi-layered cybersecurity assessment of an in-house mHealth platform (PHGL-COVID), comprising a Docker-based server infrastructure, a Samsung Galaxy A55 smartphone, and a Galaxy Watch 7 wearable. The objective was to identify vulnerabilities across the server, mobile, and wearable components by emulating real-world attacks and conducting systematic penetration tests on each layer. Tools and methods specifically tailored to each technology were applied, revealing exploitable configurations, insecure Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communications, and exposure of Personal Health Records (PHRs). Key findings included incomplete container isolation, BLE metadata leakage, and persistent abuse of Android privacy permissions. This work delivers both a set of actionable recommendations for developers and system architects to strengthen the security of mHealth platforms, and a reproducible audit methodology that has been validated in a real-world deployment, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical threat models and practical cybersecurity practices in healthcare systems. Background: Schizophrenia affects patients’ organizational thinking, as well as their ability to identify problems. The main objective of this study was to explore healthcare consultants’ application of AI mind maps to educate patients with schizophrenia regarding their perceptions of family function, social support, quality of life, and loneliness, and to help these patients think more organizationally and understand problems more effectively. Methods: The study used a survey research design and purposive sampling method to recruit 66 participants with schizophrenia who attended the psychiatric outpatient clinic of a hospital in central Taiwan. They needed to be literate, able to respond to the topic, and over 18 years old (inclusive), and they attended individual and group health education using AI mind maps over a 3-month period during regular outpatient clinic visits. Results: The study results show that patients’ family function directly affects their quality of life (p < 0.05) and loneliness (p < 0.05), satisfaction with social support affects quality of life and loneliness directly (p < 0.05), and satisfaction with social support is a mediating factor between family function and quality of life (p < 0.05), as well as a mediating factor between family function and loneliness (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Therefore, this study confirms the need to provide holistic, integrated mental health social care support for patients with schizophrenia, showing that healthcare consultants can apply AI mind maps to empower patients with schizophrenia to think more effectively about how to mobilize their social supports. Assessing Veterans’ Lived Experiences After Exposure to an Autonomous Shuttle

Transportation is often cited as a significant barrier to healthcare access by Veterans, particularly those from minority groups, who have disabilities, or live in rural areas. Autonomous shuttles (AS) offer a potential solution, yet limited research has explored Veterans’ experiences with this technology. This study qualitatively investigated Veterans’ lived experiences with AS through focus groups, enrolling participants aged 18+ from Gainesville, The Villages, and Lake Nona, Florida. Via a directed content analysis, six key themes were identified: Perceived Benefits, Safety, Experience with Autonomous Vehicles (AV), AS Experience, AV Adoption, and Perception Change. Among 26 participants (aged 30–85; 77% men; 88% urban residents), prominent themes included Safety (n = 161), Perceived Benefits (n = 153), and AS Experience (n = 118), with predominantly positive counts in all themes except AS Experience. Participants acknowledged safety advantages and multitasking potential of AS over human-operated vehicles while recommending improvements to the shuttle’s slow speed, availability and convenience. While the AS ride was positively received overall, some participants noted issues with comfort and braking, emphasizing the need for further technological enhancements. Real-world exposure to AS appeared to influence acceptance positively, offering insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders aiming to optimize AS deployment for mobility-vulnerable Veterans. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are becoming increasingly important for sustainable rural development through the smart village concept. This study aims to model ICT’s potential for public services management in European rural areas. It identifies ICT applications across rural service domains, analyzes how these technologies address specific rural challenges, and evaluates their benefits, implementation barriers, and future prospects for sustainable rural development. A qualitative content analysis method was applied using purposive sampling to analyze 79 peer-reviewed articles from EBSCO and Elsevier databases (2000–2024). A deductive approach employed predefined categories to systematically classify ICT applications across rural public service domains, with data coded according to technology scope, problems addressed, and implementation challenges. The analysis identified 15 ICT application domains (agriculture, healthcare, education, governance, energy, transport, etc.) and 42 key technology categories (Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, digital platforms, mobile applications, etc.). These technologies address four fundamental rural challenges: limited service accessibility, inefficient resource management, demographic pressures, and social exclusion. This study provides the first comprehensive systematic categorization of ICT applications in smart villages, establishing a theoretical framework connecting technology deployment with sustainable development dimensions. Findings demonstrate that successful ICT implementation requires integrated urban–rural cooperation, community-centered approaches, and balanced attention to economic, social, and environmental sustainability. The research identifies persistent challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited digital competencies, and high implementation costs, providing actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners developing ICT-enabled rural development strategies.
