Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a prevalent disorder with significant systemic and oral health consequences. This narrative review synthesizes the current knowledge on the interplay between dental health and sleep apnea, highlighting the expanding role of dentists in the screening, early detection, and management of OSAS. Validated questionnaires, anatomical assessments, and anthropometric measurements have enhanced dentists’ capacity for early screening. However, knowledge and training gaps remain, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Dentists are uniquely positioned to identify anatomical and oral risk factors, facilitate referrals for diagnosis, and provide therapeutic interventions such as oral appliance therapy. Interdisciplinary collaboration between dental and medical professionals is essential to improve early detection, treatment outcomes, and patient quality of life. Enhancing education, standardizing protocols, and integrating dentists into multidisciplinary care pathways are critical steps for advancing the management of sleep apnea. Full article

Stunting is a chronic growth disorder that not only affects height but may also impair craniofacial development. Facial proportions, especially in the vertical dimension, may provide additional anthropometric insight into growth status among children. Objectives: To assess and compare the vertical and horizontal facial proportions of stunted and non-stunted children, and to explore the potential of facial dimensions as supportive indicators for early-stunting detection in community-based settings. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study involved 266 children aged 7–72 months (mean age 42.63 ± 13.82 months) from several community health centers in Bandung, Indonesia. Children were categorized as stunted or non-stunted based on WHO height-for-age Z-scores. Facial dimensions were measured directly by calibrated pediatric dentistry residents using manual instruments. The vertical dimensions included Nasion–Subnasale (N–SN) and Subnasale–Menton (SN–M), while horizontal dimensions included zygomatic width and intergonion width. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test and Spearman correlation. Results: Significant differences were found in vertical facial dimensions between stunted and non-stunted children: median N–SN (32.4 mm vs. 33.6 mm; p = 0.003) and SN–M (42.5 mm vs. 45.1 mm; p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in horizontal dimensions. All facial parameters showed a positive correlation with age (p < 0.001). No significant differences were found based on sex. Conclusions: Stunted children exhibited shorter vertical facial dimensions compared to their non-stunted peers, while horizontal dimensions remained stable across groups. Vertical facial proportions may serve as supportive indicators in the screening and monitoring of childhood stunting. This method has potential for integration into community-based growth monitoring using simple or digital anthropometric tools. Full article

Anxiety has become an important issue affecting students’ mental health. There is some evidence that mindfulness-based art interventions (MBAIs) can reduce students’ anxiety symptoms. However, some studies have shown the opposite view. Therefore, it is necessary to explore whether MBAIs are effective in alleviating students’ anxiety. In this meta-analysis, we chose 17 articles that met the criteria for inclusion, involving a total of 1548 participants, to figure out how big an impact the interventions had on student anxiety as a whole. The results show that MBAIs can reduce students’ anxiety (g = −0.387, p = 0.000). The effect size varies based on different moderators, including learning stage, sample size, intervention type, research design, measuring instrument, and intervention duration. Intervention type, research design, and measuring instrument are significant moderators. Specifically, the mindfulness-based art intervention (MBAI) showed stronger effects than the mandala coloring activity. Single-group experimental designs showed significantly higher effect sizes than studies that included a control group, and studies that used other measurement instruments had significantly higher effect sizes than those that used the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory. On this basis, the researchers put forward specific suggestions based on MBAIs to alleviate the anxiety of students from different educational backgrounds. However, due to the nascent nature of this field, the number of included articles is relatively small. The effectiveness of the research needs further testing. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated mental illness, accelerated cognitive decline, and deepened social inequalities. In low and middle-income countries (LMIC) such as Panama, it is unclear as to whether, and to what extent, the pandemic lockdowns affected cognitive, mental, and physical health of older adults. This study investigated changes in cognitive function, mental health, and physical health in a sample of Panamanian older adults assessed before and during the pandemic, and examined whether sociodemographic variables were associated with cognition and mental health. Participants completed in-person interviews between 2018 and early 2020 and a follow-up telephone interview between February and May 2021. Repeated measures analyses showed no significant changes in cognitive function or depression; however, participants reported fewer chronic illnesses. Linear regression analysis indicated that higher cognitive function during the pandemic was associated with younger age, higher education, and having sufficient income. An attrition analysis compared participants who completed both interviews to those who were lost to follow-up, revealing that participants who dropped out of the study had lower socioeconomic status and greater impairment at baseline. These findings highlight the need for targeted support for vulnerable older adults during public health crises. Full article

This article focuses on activities addressed in the European project hydrogen lightweight & innovative tank for zero-emission aircraft, H2ELIOS. The authors propose a preliminary approach oriented to the design of a structural health monitoring SHM system conceived for a cryo-tank liquid hydrogen storage for medium range vehicles. The system was ideated to be installed on board and operating during service, to provide early detection and localization of potential damage, critical both in terms of safety and maintenance. The use of optical fibers for strain measurement is justified, on one hand, by the capability of pure silica fiber to prevent hydrogen darkening effects and, on the other hand, by the absence of metal components, which eliminates the risk of embrittlement. In detail, distributed and fiber Bragg grating FBG sensors designed for this specific application have demonstrated reliable monitoring capabilities, even after exposure to hydrogen and at cryogenic temperatures. Furthermore, another key contribution of this preliminary activity is the analysis of thermoplastic material faults by correlating damage characteristics with static and dynamic response. This is due to the fact that the investigated physics strongly depend on the nature of occurring damage. Achievements lie in the demonstrated ability to assess the health status of the reference composite structure, establishing the first steps for a future qualification of the proprietary system, made of commercial and original hardware and software. Background: Thallium is a metal that is ubiquitous in our natural environment. Despite its potential for high toxicity, thallium is understudied and not regulated in food. The California Department of Public Health was alerted to a household cluster of elevated urine thallium levels noted among a mother (peak 5.6 µg/g creatinine; adult reference: ≤0.4 µg/g creatinine) and her three young children (peak 10.5 µg/g creatinine; child reference: ≤0.8 µg/g creatinine). Objectives: This case report identifies questions raised after a public health investigation linked a household’s thallium exposure to a commercially available food product. We provide an overview of the public health investigation. We then explore concerns, such as gaps in toxicological data and limited surveillance of thallium in the food supply, which make management of individual and population exposure risks challenging. Methods: We highlight findings from a cross-agency investigation, including a household exposure survey, sampling of possible environmental and dietary exposures (ICP-MS analysis measured thallium in kale chips at 1.98 mg/kg and 2.15 mg/kg), and monitoring of symptoms and urine thallium levels after the source was removed. We use regulatory and research findings to describe the challenges and opportunities in characterizing the scale of thallium in our food supply and effects of dietary exposures on health. Discussion: Thallium can bioaccumulate in our food system, particularly in brassica vegetables like kale. Thallium concentration in foods can also be affected by manufacturing processes, such as dehydration. We have limited surveillance data nationally regarding this metal in our food supply. Dietary reviews internationally show increased thallium intake in toddlers. Limited information is available about low-dose or chronic exposures, particularly among children, although emerging evidence shows that there might be risks associated at lower levels than previously thought. Improved toxicological studies are needed to guide reference doses and food safety standards. Promising action towards enhanced monitoring of thallium is being pursued by food safety agencies internationally, and research is underway to deepen our understanding of thallium toxicity. Mastitis is a significant challenge in the buffalo industry, affecting both milk production and animal health and resulting in economic losses. This study presents the first fully automated AI-driven thermal imaging system integrated with robotic milking, specifically developed for the real-time, non-invasive monitoring of udder health in Italian Mediterranean buffalo. Unlike traditional approaches, the system leverages the synchronized acquisition of thermal images during milking and compensates for environmental variables through a calibrated weather station. A transformer-based neural network (SegFormer) segments the udder area, enabling the extraction of maximum udder skin surface temperature (USST), which is significantly correlated with somatic cell count (SCC). Initial trials demonstrate the feasibility of this approach in operational farm environments, paving the way for scalable, precision diagnostics of subclinical mastitis. This work represents a critical step toward intelligent, automated systems for early detection and intervention, improving animal welfare and reducing antibiotic use. Full article

This study presents a comprehensive evaluation and selection framework for extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) measurement instruments. Recognizing the diversity of application environments and technical constraints, the framework addresses the challenges of selecting appropriate tools for specific scenarios. It integrates a structured, quantitative approach through a weighted scoring matrix that evaluates instrumentation across six criteria: monitoring duration, sensitivity, environmental adaptability, biological/regulatory relevance, usability, and cost. Complementing this is a logic-based flowchart that visually guides decision-making based on user-defined operational needs. The framework is applied to a realistic occupational case study, demonstrating its effectiveness in producing evidence-based, scenario-sensitive instrument recommendations. This method provides stakeholders with a transparent and adaptable tool for ELF-EMF device selection. Full article

Optimizing Pedestrian-Friendly Spaces in Xi’an’s Residential Streets: Accounting for PM2.5 Exposure

Urban street canyons in high-density areas exacerbate PM2.5 accumulation, posing significant public health risks. Through integrated empirical and computational methods—including empirical PM2.5 and microclimate measurements, multivariate regression analysis, and high-resolution ENVI-met5.1 simulations—this study quantifies the threshold effects of pedestrian-oriented morphological indicators on PM2.5 exposure in east–west-oriented residential streets. Key findings include the following: (1) the height-to-width ratio (H/W) negatively correlates with exposure, where H/W = 2.0 reduces the peak concentrations by 37–41% relative to H/W = 0.5 through enhanced vertical advection; (2) the Build-To-Line ratio (BTR) exhibits a positive correlation with exposure, with BTR = 63.2% mitigating exposure by 12–15% compared to BTR = 76.8% by reducing aerodynamic stagnation; (3) pollution exposure can be mitigated by enhancing airflow ventilation within street canyons through architectural facade design. These evidence-based morphological thresholds (H/W ≥ 1.5, BTR ≤ 70%) provide actionable strategies for reducing health risks in polluted urban corridors, supporting China to meet its national air quality improvement targets. The Effect of Mild Exercise in the Chemotherapy Room on the Anxiety Level of Cancer Patients: A Prospective Observational Paired Cohort Study

Background/Objectives: Cancer represents a significant health challenge, with high mortality and morbidity rates. Its diagnosis often triggers chronic stress, adversely affecting patient outcomes. Exercise has emerged as complementary therapy, enhancing treatment adherence and mitigating the side effects of chemotherapy. This study examines the effects of mild exercise during chemotherapy on patient anxiety. Methods: This prospective paired cohort study was conducted in the General Oncology Hospital of Kifisia “Agioi Anargyroi” in Athens, Greece. Adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy participated, excluding those with cognitive, hearing, or motor impairments, those who experienced side effects, or those who declined consent. Anxiety was measured before and after a 20-minute exercise routine performed during chemotherapy, using the Greek-translated State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The exercise regimen included warm-up, full-body stretching, and cool-down exercises. Pre- and post-exercise scores were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: Forty-five patients (20 women, 25 men; mean age 69.02 ± 10.62 years) with various cancer backgrounds participated. Pre-intervention anxiety levels were in the borderline “moderate” range, dropping post-exercise to the “low” range. Mean STAI scores decreased from 37.73 ± 13.33 to 32.00 ± 14.22 (p < 0.0001), with a medium-large effect size (Cohen’s d for paired samples = −0.646). No significant correlation was found between age and anxiety scores. Discussion: This study found a significant short-term reduction in anxiety, suggesting that incorporating mild exercise during chemotherapy may help in alleviating patient stress. The medium-to-large effect size supports the potential for meaningful short-term benefits. Conclusions: Incorporating mild exercise during chemotherapy may help reduce anxiety and psychological burden. These findings underscore the need for more comprehensive research in larger, more diverse populations to better understand the benefits of incorporating mild exercise during chemotherapy. Objective: With a global prevalence ranging from 50% to 100%, gingivitis is considered the most common oral disease in adults worldwide. It is characterized by clinical signs of inflammation, such as redness, swelling and bleeding, on gentle probing. Although it is considered a milder form of periodontal disease, gingivitis plays an important role in overall oral health. Early detection and treatment are essential to prevent progression to more severe conditions. Typically, diagnosis is performed by dental professionals, as individuals are often unable to accurately assess whether they are affected. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine to what degree gingivitis is visually detectable by an easy-to-use camera-based application. Materials and methods: Standardized intraoral photographs were taken using a specialized intraoral camera and processed using a custom-developed filter based on a machine-learning algorithm. The latter was trained to highlight areas suggestive of gingivitis. A total of 110 participants were enrolled through ad hoc sampling, resulting in 320 assessable test sites. A dentist provided two reference standards: the clinical diagnosis based on bleeding on probing of the periodontal sulcus (BOP) and an independent visual assessment of the same images. Agreement between diagnostic methods was measured using Cohen’s kappa statistic. Results: The agreement between the application’s output and the BOP-based clinical diagnosis was low, with a kappa value of 0.055 [p = 0.010]. Similarly, the dentist’s visual assessment of clinical photos showed low agreement with BOP, with a kappa value of 0.087 [p < 0.001]. In contrast, the agreement between the application and the dentist’s photo-based evaluations was higher, with a kappa value of 0.280 [p < 0.001]. Conclusions: In its current form, the camera-based application is not able to reliably detect gingivitis. The low level of agreement between dentists’ visual assessments and the clinical gold standard highlights that gingivitis is difficult to identify merely visually. These results underscore the need to refine visual diagnostic approaches further, which could support future self-assessment or remote screening applications. Full article

Armed conflict poses a significant threat to the mental health of youth worldwide. This study focused on the role of teachers as protective agents fostering resilience among their students. The study examined the moderating effects of teachers’ personal well-being and their efficacy in the school on relations between their students’ armed conflict exposure and student psychiatric symptoms. Participants included 1260 students and their homeroom teachers from 62 8–11th grade classes. Using self-report standardized measures, teachers reported their life satisfaction and sense of efficacy while students reported their armed conflict exposure and psychiatric symptoms. Data were analyzed using a multilevel modeling (MLM) approach. Findings revealed positive correlations between student armed conflict exposure and psychiatric symptoms. In the between-class level of analysis, teacher personal life satisfaction and efficacy in participation in the school system emerged as protective factors for the students, significantly moderating relations between student exposure and their psychiatric symptoms. However, teacher efficacy in class management showed no significant moderating effect on student mental-health difficulties. Results highlight the importance of supporting teachers in conflict-affected environments and emphasize the need for preventive and therapeutic initiatives that prioritize teacher well-being and organizational resources to enhance teachers’ capacity to foster student resilience. Turbot Scophthalmus maximus (Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the most valuable and economically important species for the Black Sea countries. In Bulgaria, their numbers are limited and stocks are depleted; therefore, monitoring development and health status is extremely important. Internal helminths are widespread among turbots on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. However, description of this infection is relatively limited, and they have not been reported in scientific papers. For this purpose, a total of 36 hauls were made at depths from 15 to 90 m, and 65 turbots were examined for intestinal parasites. The present study represents the first report of internal helminths in turbot from Bulgarian marine waters through the spawning season, characterized morphologically based on a microscope observation and molecular identification. Evaluation of laboratory analyses revealed that two different parasites were determined: Bothriocephalus sp. (Müller, 1776) and Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802) and that 73.85% of the turbot were infected with one or more parasites. Based on the results, control measures and treatment for the wild population are unrealistic but should be considered for the containment and spread of diseases in aquaculture facilities. Quality of Life and Executive Function Deficits in Inflammatory Arthritis: A Comparative Study of Rheumatoid and Psoriatic Arthritis

Background/Objective: Executive functions (EFs) are essential in the daily management of arthritis, as they influence treatment adherence, decision-making, and the ability to cope with disease-related challenges. The objective of this study was to compare EFs alongside functional status and quality of life in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and examine their associations with disease activity and clinical variables. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 140 patients (70 RA, 70 PsA) were assessed using the Stroop-TBAG, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), and Adult Executive Functioning Inventory (ADEXI). Functional status and quality of life were measured with the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and WHOQOL-BREF, respectively. Correlations with disease activity (DAS28-CRP), age, and disease duration were examined. Results: RA patients had significantly higher disease activity and longer disease duration. They showed poorer performance on the Stroop Test (color–word time: 61.6 ± 14.8 vs. 52.4 ± 10.9 s, p < 0.001; errors: 3.2 ± 2.1 vs. 2.1 ± 1.5, p = 0.001), more WCST perseverative errors (p = 0.002), and higher ADEXI inhibition scores (13.9 ± 2.5 vs. 12.9 ± 3.0, p = 0.013). DAS28-CRP was correlated with EF impairments, disability, and poorer quality of life in RA (p < 0.05). In PsA, EFs remained relatively stable, although higher disease activity was associated with worse HAQ scores (p = 0.001). Treatment type was not linked to EF, but patients on combination therapy reported lower physical (p = 0.009) and psychological (p = 0.014) quality of life, along with higher HAQ scores (p = 0.016). Conclusions: This study revealed that patients with RA exhibit more pronounced executive dysfunction, along with lower ADL skills and quality of life compared to those with PsA. These findings highlight the need for multidimensional assessment strategies in inflammatory arthritis, especially in RA, where cognitive and functional outcomes are closely tied to clinical burden. Prevalence, Causes, and Risk Factors of Visual Impairment: Evidence from Duhknah, a Rural Community in Saudi Arabia

Background: Visual impairment (VI) continues to be a significant global public health concern, especially in underserved rural communities. Objectives: This study aims to assess the prevalence of VI and refractive errors, as well as to identify the causes and risk factors associated with VI in Duhknah, a rural area in Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted in May 2024, included 929 participants aged 6–90 years from Duhknah, a rural area in Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia. Refractive errors (REs) were measured using a non-cycloplegic autorefractometer. Anterior and posterior eye examinations were performed using slit lamp biomicroscopy, direct ophthalmoscopy, and 90 D fundus biomicroscopy. VI was classified based on the International Classification of Diseases 11th revision (ICD-11), 2018. Results: The findings revealed that 671 (72.2%) participants had never undergone an eye examination. The overall prevalence of presenting VI was 370 (39.8%), comprising 21.6% with mild VI, 11.0% moderate, 4.1% severe, and 3.1% classified as blind. The prevalence of hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism was 20.6%, 36.9%, and 13.2%, respectively. Uncorrected REs were the most common cause of VI (81.4%), followed by amblyopia (13.5%) and cataracts (3.2%). Regression analysis showed that women had 1.58 times higher odds of VI (p = 0.001). Participants with eye examinations for one year or more had 3.64 times higher odds (p < 0.001). Additionally, the risk of VI was significantly lower among older participants (ages 18–90) compared to younger ones (ages 6–17), (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study found most participants had never had an eye exam, and VI was highly prevalent in the rural community. These findings underscore the need to strengthen primary eye care in rural Saudi Arabia. Regular vision screening, particularly for children, and better access to refractive services could significantly reduce VI and support the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. Full article
