This article aims to report and analyze the main findings of a study on how constraints affect the engagement and creativity of non-designers in co-creation activities. It focuses particularly on identifying the limits and potentials of using a physical interface to address tectonic and renewable energy aspects within the design process. To explore these issues, this study adopted a qualitative case study approach, combining co-design charrettes mediated by a physical interface with a mapping process used as the primary analytical and evaluative framework. The interface allows users to anticipate the structural behavior and construction aspects of small roundwood structures from the Brazilian Caatinga biome, as well as the operation of solar energy systems—all without prior technical training. Despite its limitations, this study offers three main contributions: (a) it demonstrates that interfaces and charrettes can include non-designers in technical design processes; (b) it highlights the pedagogical, technical, and political potential of these tools in democratizing architectural decisions; and (c) it emphasizes the value of constraints as generative elements in creative processes—a topic still underexplored in the co-design literature. This study explored the Erasmus+ project ’H2OMap: Innovative Learning by Hydraulic Heritage Mapping’, integrating environmental awareness and cultural heritage into secondary education through interdisciplinary, ICT, and STEM-based approaches. Focused on water-related heritage in the Mediterranean, the study pursued three aims: integrate ICT-supported participatory mapping bridging history/geography subjects with digital innovation; identify learning benefits and implementation conditions; and generate transferable outputs and datasets for classroom reuse. Intellectual outputs include a methodological guide, an e-learning course, and an educational multiplatform comprising a mobile mapping app for in situ geocataloguing, an online database, and a geoportal with interactive StoryMaps. Evidence came from classroom testing across age groups, teacher feedback from the e-learning course, student mobilities in Spain, Italy, and Portugal, and platform usage records. More than 390 students and teachers participated, documenting over 100 hydraulic heritage elements. Additionally, dissemination through nine multiplier events and conferences reached over 550 external attendees. Findings show increased student engagement and ICT/GIS skills, clearer cross-curricular integration, and a replicable open workflow supported by structured coordination that strengthens school–university partnerships. Learner experience emphasised hands-on, place-based exploration and collaborative documentation of water heritage. Recommendations include using open geospatial standards, providing teacher training, and maintaining geoportals for classroom reuse. Full article

Introduction: Market access, pricing, and reimbursement of digital health technologies (DHTs) in Europe are significantly challenged by regulatory fragmentation and various assessment methodologies. Understanding the challenges and priorities of technology developers is essential for developing effective and relevant policy responses. This study explores perceived barriers and developer-driven priorities to inform the development of a harmonized health technology assessment (HTA) framework under the EDiHTA project. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was adopted, including a scoping review to identify key challenges, a survey of 20 DHT developers, and interviews and focus groups with 29 industry representatives from startups to multinational companies across 10 European countries during 2024. Results: Key challenges included a lack of transparency in reimbursement processes, fragmented HTA requirements, and misalignment between traditional evidence models and the agile development of DHTs. Developers highlighted the need to integrate real-world evidence, consider usability and implementation factors, and provide structured, lifecycle-based guidance. Financial barriers and procedural burdens were particularly significant for small and medium-sized enterprises. Conclusions: These findings highlight the need for an HTA framework that reflects the iterative nature of digital development, integrates real-world evidence, and reduces uncertainty for developers. The EDiHTA project aims to respond to these challenges by building a harmonized and flexible approach that aligns with the goals of the European HTA Regulation. Full article

This study presents a systematic review of the literature on teaching techniques that enhance student motivation and academic performance across basic, secondary, and higher education levels. The review is grounded in the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, highlighting their decisive roles in engagement and achievement. The analysis focuses on active learning methodologies such as project-based learning, collaborative learning, gamification, and flipped classrooms. It identifies the mechanisms by which each approach fosters students’ interest, sense of competence, and persistence. Four international databases were consulted, and studies published between 2000 and 2024 reporting quantitative measures of motivation and/or performance were selected. Five investigations met all eligibility criteria and were assessed for methodological quality. The results indicate moderate motivational effects, especially when interventions last at least eight weeks, provide frequent feedback, and place students at the center of authentic problem-solving. Greater gains were also observed in STEM disciplines and in contexts that encourage peer collaboration. Based on these findings, practical recommendations are proposed for educators: structure interdisciplinary projects, incorporate playful elements in the initial stages of formal education, combine autonomous work with small-group discussions, and use data analysis tools to deliver personalized feedback. The study concludes that adopting diverse, student-centered pedagogical practices enhances motivation and academic achievement, leading to deeper and more lasting learning outcomes. Full article

As society ages, there is a growing concern about the comfort and health of elderly people. Although populations around the world, including Slovenia, are rapidly aging, evidence that increasing longevity is being accompanied by an extended period of good health is scarce. An increasing number of older adults live with chronic diseases, functional limitations, or frailty. In 2025, Slovenia launched the project Systemic Approach to Frailty with a Focus on Pre-Frailty for Healthy and Hight-Quality Ageing, within the European Cohesion Policy Programme 2021–2027, aiming to address frailty through multidimensional and community-based interventions. In addition to presenting the project framework, this paper provides an analytical preliminary review of existing literature, critically reflecting on research gaps in the field. The main aim of this paper is to explore the possibilities for creating healthy living environments that support the prevention and management of frailty. The project’s core innovation lies in the integration of public health principles into urban planning and design through a structured, community-based approach and the use of the Living Environmental Assessment (OBO) Tool. This tool enables urban planners, municipalities, and local communities to collaboratively evaluate and co-design living environments (e.g., optimizing walkability, green space access, barrier-free design, and social amenities) to build resilience and independence among older adults. Designing inclusive, accessible, and health-promoting environments can help to prevent frailty and improve well-being across all age groups. Full article

Digital portfolios have become an essential assessment tool in project-based and student-centered learning environments. Unfortunately, students exert minimal effort in creating digital portfolios because they find the writing component unchallenging. This issue is concerning since existing research predominantly focuses on the use of pre-existing platforms for building digital portfolios. With this concern, there is an opportunity to explore more challenging approaches to digital portfolio creation. Consequently, this study employs a project-based learning (PBL) approach within a website design and development course, where 176 undergraduate students completed weekly coding tasks culminating in a self-coded digital portfolio. Using a one-group posttest-only research design, data were collected through a structured questionnaire that included demographic items and validated scales measuring learning effectiveness and ownership of learning. The survey was administered electronically after students submitted their digital portfolio projects. The results reveal that device ownership shows only weak associations with students’ perceptions, while internet connectivity and self-reported academic performance demonstrate stronger relationships with engagement and ownership of learning. Additionally, prior experience with digital portfolios positively influences students’ engagement, motivation, and ownership of learning. Implications of these findings are discussed for supporting the integration of digital portfolios into technical disciplines. Overall, this study contributes to the literature on PBL methodology, expands our understanding of digital portfolio integration, and underscores the significance of student-centered pedagogies. This paper presents ModuLab, a modular, low-cost sensor platform designed to simplify real-time environmental monitoring for laboratory research and educational settings. Centered on the APP-All MCU 2023 development board with an AVR128DA48 microcontroller (Microchip Technology Inc., Taiwan) ModuLab supports plug-and-play integration of multiple sensor types—including temperature, pH, light, and humidity—using a robust I2C communication protocol. The system features configurable sampling rates, built-in signal conditioning, and a Python-based interface for real-time data visualization. As a proof-of-concept, ModuLab was operated continuously for 48 h to evaluate system stability and filtering capabilities. However, due to institutional data ownership and confidentiality policies, the underlying datasets cannot be disclosed in this submission. The architecture and implementation details described herein are intended to guide future users and research groups seeking accessible alternatives to conventional data acquisition solutions. Comprehensive performance validation and open-access data sharing are planned as the next steps in this ongoing project. Full article

Objectives: To establish the risk of being a carrier of multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDR) upon ICU admission, according to the risk factors (RFs) from the Spanish “Resistencia Zero” (RZ) project checklist, using machine learning methodology. Methods: A retrospective cohort study, conducted with a consecutive sample of patients admitted to the ICU between 2014 and 2016. The study analyzed the RZ RFs for MDR, as well as other pathological variables and comorbidities. The study group was randomly divided into a development group (70%) and a validation group (30%). Several machine learning models were used: binary logistic regression, CHAID-type decision tree, and the XGBOOST methodology (version 2.1.0) with SHAP analysis. Results: Data from 2459 patients were analyzed, of whom 210 (8.2%) were carriers of MDR. The risk grew with the accumulation of RF. Binary logistic regression identified colonization or previous infection by MDR, prior antibiotic treatment, living in a nursing home, recent hospitalization, and renal failure as the most influential factors. The CHAID tree detected MDR in 56% of patients with previous colonization or infection, a figure that increased to almost 74% if they had also received antibiotic therapy. The XGBOOST model determined that variables related to antibiotic treatment were the most important. Conclusions: The RZ RFs have limitations in predicting MDR upon ICU admission, and machine learning models offer certain advantages. Not all RFs have the same importance, but their accumulation increases the risk. There is a group of patients with no identifiable RFs, which complicates decisions on preventive isolation. Dysfunctions and disorders of the craniomandibular system are accompanied by pathophysiological changes of muscle groups in the throat/neck and facial area, e.g., pain in the jaw and muscles of mastication and disturbance of occlusion, leading to teeth injury (loss of dental hard tissue, fractures/sensibility disorders, etc.). For muscular dysfunctions, even in the context of psychosomatic disorders and chronic stress, hippotherapy is particularly suitable, since it helps actively to relieve muscle tensions. In the current project we combined hippotherapy with progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) to achieve a synergistic effect. The horses used for therapy (two mares and five geldings between seven and twenty-one years old) were especially suitable because of their calm temperament. In two cases, trained therapy horses were used; in five other cases, the patients used their own horses, which were not specially trained. Right from the beginning, the project was accompanied by veterinary support. Conditions of horse keeping (active stable, same-sex groups, no boxes) were assessed as well as the horses themselves prior to, during, and after each therapy unit. In patients, cortisol, as a quantifiable parameter for stress, was measured before and after each therapy unit. From before the start until the end of each therapy unit of 15 min, the heart rate variability (HRV) of both patients and horses was registered continuously and synchronously. In addition, the behavior of the horses was monitored and recorded on video by an experienced coach and a veterinarian. The stress load during the tension phases in the therapy units was low, perceivable in the horses lifting their heads and a slightly shortened stride length. Likewise, the horses reflected the patients’ relaxation phases, so that at the end of the units the horses were physically and psychically relaxed, too, noticeable by lowering their necks, free ear movement, and a decreasing heart frequency (HF). Altogether, the horses benefited from the treatment, too. Obvious stress signs like unrest, head tossing, tail swishing, or tense facial expressions were not noticed at any time. Collaboration is essential in today’s technology-driven world, where IT professionals work in teams to solve complex problems. To mirror industry practices, universities have increasingly adopted project-based learning approaches, requiring students to work collaboratively on tasks such as software development. However, while considerable research has examined group project outcomes, little is known about the decision-making processes students use to select their partners, particularly in software development. This study, therefore, explores the factors influencing IT students’ choices of group project partners and how these choices reflect broader learning priorities. A qualitative approach was employed, collecting open-ended responses from 103 software development students through individual interviews conducted via MS Teams. Thematic analysis was used to identify recurring patterns in the data. Five main themes emerged: Personal Relationships & Familiarity, Work Ethic & Dedication, Communication & Teamwork, Reliability & Accountability, and Technical Skills & Competence. The findings indicate that students prioritise interpersonal trust, reliability, and communication skills over technical ability when selecting partners. This suggests that students view effective collaboration as grounded more in work ethic and relational qualities than in coding proficiency alone. Full article

The most recent scientific literature shows the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on socially vulnerable groups such as Roma people. Non-profit social initiative organizations were active agents in overcoming the effects of the pandemic. This article shows the role that Third Sector of Social Action organizations played in alleviating the impact of the pandemic in collaboration with the Roma community itself, as part of the R&D&I research project ROM21, which studied the social agency of the Roma population in Spain regarding overcoming inequalities caused by the pandemic in relation to education, social services, and civic organizations. Based on the communicative methodology, discussion groups and interviews were conducted with Roma people and professionals from social services, civic organizations, and the health and education sectors, with 54 Roma women, 24 Roma men, 40 professionals, and 5 social activists participating. The results show the social initiative entities’ social action strategies in collaboration with the Roma community and the public administrations that responded to the needs that arose during the pandemic and in the post-pandemic context. We present the conceptual framework of the Astronomical Hub (AstroHub), a unified platform combining various optical instruments at a single observatory. Its major approach lies in arranging conditions for research groups to install telescopes and equipment and participate in joint projects. AstroHub is planned to integrate Virtual Observatory (VO) tools, FAIR data principles, and a telescope network to create a powerful and attractive ecosystem for both robust near-Earth object (NEO) monitoring and diverse deep space research. We provide an overview of the AstroHub development directions in the case study of the Assy-Turgen Observatory. Full article

Integrating renewable energy requires robust, large-scale storage solutions to balance intermittent supply. Underground hydrogen storage (UHS) in geological formations, such as salt caverns, depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, or aquifers, offers a promising way to store large volumes of energy for seasonal periods. This review focuses on the biological aspects of UHS, examining the biogeochemical interactions between H2, reservoir minerals, and key hydrogenotrophic microorganisms such as sulfate-reducing bacteria, methanogens, acetogens, and iron-reducing bacteria within the gas–liquid–rock–microorganism system. These microbial groups use H2 as an electron donor, triggering biogeochemical reactions that can affect storage efficiency through gas loss and mineral dissolution–precipitation cycles. This review discusses their metabolic pathways and the geochemical interactions driven by microbial byproducts such as H2S, CH4, acetate, and Fe2+ and considers biofilm formation by microbial consortia, which can further change the petrophysical reservoir properties. In addition, the review maps 76 ongoing European projects focused on UHS, showing 71% target salt caverns, 22% depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, and 7% aquifers, with emphasis on potential biogeochemical interactions. It also identifies key knowledge gaps, including the lack of in situ kinetic data, limited field-scale monitoring of microbial activity, and insufficient understanding of mineral–microbe interactions that may affect gas purity. Finally, the review highlights the need to study microbial adaptation over time and the influence of mineralogy on tolerance thresholds. By analyzing these processes across different geological settings and integrating findings from European research initiatives, this work evaluates the impact of microbial and geochemical factors on the safety, efficiency, and long-term performance of UHS. Local economic development (LED) strategies at the district level—such as sub-city or neighbourhood initiatives—play a crucial role in fostering sustainable and inclusive urban growth. This study explores the critical factors influencing LED and urban regeneration at the district scale, emphasising the integration of sustainability, digital technologies, inclusivity, energy efficiency, community engagement, and innovation into strategic planning. To prioritise these CFs, a tailored survey was distributed among a group of 13 city experts from European cities, involved in research projects focused on district-level quality-of-life enhancements through building retrofits, urban space interventions, energy community promotion, and technological deployment. By focusing on the district level, this research highlights the importance of tailoring strategies to local contexts and leveraging the unique characteristics of each neighbourhood. The findings reveal the need for local governments to enhance the capacity of administrative staff to engage citizens and direct external support for development projects. The normative recommendations derived from this study are specifically grounded in district-level research and practice, ensuring their applicability to sub-city areas. This paper concludes that a context-specific and collaborative approach is essential for achieving equitable and sustainable economic development at the district level. Full article

Background: Children affected by unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) represent a therapeutic challenge requiring the development of novel therapies, such as the implant of a bioengineered tissue—BIOCLEFT—or the use of nasoalveolar molding (NAM). The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of NAM on the surgical and aesthetic outcomes of children with UCLP. Methods: A total of 36 children with UCLP treated at a craniofacial malformations management unit were evaluated, including 23 patients treated with presurgical NAM followed by palate surgical correction (NAM group) and 13 patients treated surgically without previous NAM (non-NAM group). Measurements were obtained from each patient immediately before palate surgery, including four linear measurements: nasal ala projection length (NAPL), nasal dome height (NDH), superoinferior alar groove position (S-I AGP), and nasal dome position (M-L NDP), and two angular measurements: columellar deviation (CD) and nasal bridge deviation (NBD). Results: When NAM was used, a significant improvement of the basilar view linear measurements of the patient’s nose was found, including the NAPL and NDH, and the frontal view linear measurement M-L NDP, but not S-I AGP. Significant improvements were also observed in the angular measurements of nasal symmetry CD and NBD. All these variables, except the S-I AGP, significantly correlated with the treatment group, and two variables—NAPL and CD—significantly contributed to generate a predictive model developed using binary logistic regression. Conclusions: These findings support the use of NAM to efficiently improve the nasal symmetry and the presurgical outcomes of patients with UCLP. Full article
