Household Satisfaction and Drinking Water Quality in Rural Areas: A Comparison with Official Access Data

Background: Access to safe and reliable water and sanitation remains a critical public health and development challenge, with rural and low-income communities being disproportionately affected by inadequate services and heightened exposure to waterborne diseases. Despite global efforts and infrastructure-based progress indicators, significant disparities persist, and these often overlook users’ perceptions of water quality, reliability, and safety. This study explores the determinants of household satisfaction with drinking water in rural areas, comparing subjective user feedback with official access data to reveal gaps in current monitoring approaches and support more equitable, user-centered water governance. Methods: This study was conducted in Kazakhstan’s Atyrau Region, where 1361 residents from 86 rural villages participated in a structured survey assessing household access to drinking water and perceptions of its quality. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multinomial logistic regression to identify key predictors of user satisfaction, with results compared against official records to evaluate discrepancies between reported experiences and administrative data. Results: The field survey results revealed substantial discrepancies between official statistics and residents’ reports, with only 58.1% of respondents having in-house tap water access despite claims of universal coverage. Multinomial logistic regression analysis identified key predictors of user satisfaction, showing that uninterrupted supply and the absence of complaints about turbidity, odor, or taste significantly increased the likelihood of higher satisfaction levels with drinking water quality. Conclusions: This study underscores the critical need to align official water access statistics with household-level experiences, revealing that user satisfaction—strongly influenced by supply reliability and sensory water quality—is essential for achieving equitable and effective rural water governance. Improving the green innovation quality (GIQ) of center cities is crucial to achieve sustainable urban agglomeration development. Utilizing data on green patent citations and economic indicators across cities in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration (YRD) from 2003 to 2022, this research examines the influence of center cities’ GIQ on the economic performance of peripheral municipalities. The results show the following: (1) Center cities’ GIQ exerts a significant suppressive effect on peripheral cities’ economic growth overall. Heterogeneity analysis uncovers a distance-dependent duality. GIQ stimulates growth in proximate cities (within 300 km) but suppresses it beyond this threshold. This spatial siphoning effect is notably amplified in national-level center cities. (2) Mechanisms suggest that GIQ accelerates the outflow of skilled labor in peripheral cities through factor agglomeration and industry transfer mechanisms. Concurrently, it impedes the gradient diffusion of urban services, collectively hindering peripheral development. (3) Increased government green attention (GGA) and industry–university–research cooperation (IURC) in centers can mitigate these negative impacts. This paper contributes to the theoretical discourse on center cities’ spatial externalities within agglomerations and offers empirical support and policy insights for the exertion of spillover effects of high-quality green innovation from center cities and the sustainable development of urban agglomeration. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are becoming increasingly important for sustainable rural development through the smart village concept. This study aims to model ICT’s potential for public services management in European rural areas. It identifies ICT applications across rural service domains, analyzes how these technologies address specific rural challenges, and evaluates their benefits, implementation barriers, and future prospects for sustainable rural development. A qualitative content analysis method was applied using purposive sampling to analyze 79 peer-reviewed articles from EBSCO and Elsevier databases (2000–2024). A deductive approach employed predefined categories to systematically classify ICT applications across rural public service domains, with data coded according to technology scope, problems addressed, and implementation challenges. The analysis identified 15 ICT application domains (agriculture, healthcare, education, governance, energy, transport, etc.) and 42 key technology categories (Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, digital platforms, mobile applications, etc.). These technologies address four fundamental rural challenges: limited service accessibility, inefficient resource management, demographic pressures, and social exclusion. This study provides the first comprehensive systematic categorization of ICT applications in smart villages, establishing a theoretical framework connecting technology deployment with sustainable development dimensions. Findings demonstrate that successful ICT implementation requires integrated urban–rural cooperation, community-centered approaches, and balanced attention to economic, social, and environmental sustainability. The research identifies persistent challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited digital competencies, and high implementation costs, providing actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners developing ICT-enabled rural development strategies. The socio-economic geography of the Italian territory is framed by strong imbalances in the settlement development, with consequent inequalities in terms of accessibility to essential services. These challenges are most critical in the ‘inner areas’, which are remote from metropolitan and urban centers and affected by chronic demographic decline and depopulation. Both European and national policies have relied primarily on financial interventions, often implemented with limited integration into comprehensive urban and territorial planning frameworks. Using a case study methodology, this research examines the area-based strategies of the 72 pilot areas designated under the 2014–2020 program-ming cycle of the National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI). The main research question guiding this study is as follows: how does economic planning intersect with territorial governance in Italy’s inner areas, and what is the specific role of local autonomies and the management of core functions, particularly in relation to urban and regional planning? Through this lens, this study proposes a conceptual reframing of the inter-municipal ad-ministrative scale as a strategic framework for promoting more effective territorial policies. Full article

This study intends to portray how varying degrees of environmental policy stringency and the growing pressure of global competition reflect on high-tech (HT) sectors’ cost rationalization strategies and lead to environmental consequences in 15 G20 countries (1992–2019). Moreover, we center the pattern of cost rationalization management regarding the opportunity cost of ecosystem service consumption and propose to test the fundamental hypothesis stating the possible transmission of competition-induced technological innovations to green economic transformation. Our new methodology estimates quantile-specific effects with MM-QR, while identifying the main interaction effects between regulatory pressure and trade competition uses an extended STIRPAT model. The results reveal a paradoxical finding: despite higher environmental policy stringency and opportunity costs of ecosystem services, HT sectors persistently adopt environmentally detrimental cost-reduction approaches. These findings carry important policy implications: (1) environmental regulations for HT sectors require complementary innovation subsidies, (2) trade agreements should incorporate clean technology transfer clauses, and (3) governments must monitor sectoral emission leakage risks. Our dual machine learning–econometric approach provides policymakers with targeted insights for different emission scenarios, highlighting the need for differentiated strategies across clean and polluting HT subsectors. Africa’s rapid urbanization often exceeds the capacity of governments to provide essential services and infrastructure, exacerbating structural inequalities and exposing vulnerable populations to serious health risks. This paper examines the case of Douala, Cameroon, to demonstrate that health inequities in African cities are not simply the result of urban growth but are shaped by spatial inequities, historical legacies, and systemic exclusion. Disadvantaged neighborhoods are particularly impacted, becoming epicenters of health crises. Using a mixed-methods approach combining spatial analysis, household surveys and interviews, the study identifies three key findings: (1) Healthcare services in Douala are unevenly distributed and dominated by private providers, which limits access for low-income residents. (2) Inadequate infrastructure and environmental risks in informal settlements lead to a higher disease burden and an overflow of demand into better-equipped districts, which overwhelms public health centers across the city. (3) This structural mismatch fuels widespread reliance on informal and unregulated care practices. This study positions Douala as a microcosm of broader public health challenges in rapidly urbanizing African cities. It highlights the need for integrated urban planning and health system reforms that address spatial inequalities, strengthen public health infrastructure, and prioritize equity—key principles for achieving the third Sustainable Development Goal (ensuring good health and well-being for all residents) in sub-Saharan Africa. The making of a land patrimony for the benefit of religious missions is profoundly linked to territorial construction in the colonies but is rarely examined from the angle of ecclesiastical governmentality over the ceded lands. This analysis highlights three complementary processes for understanding the role of religious mission land heritage in territorial reconfigurations. First, this article examines the process of “land sanctuarization”, which materializes territorial anchoring through the crystallization of land rights granted to religious missions over customary lands previously presumed to be “vacant”. Next, it explores the formation of an “ecclesiastical dominium”, manifested in the dismantling of state missions and their free transfer, explicit or tacit, to religious missions under concession or agreement regimes. This reveals the exercise of state power over the land heritage of religious missions, positioning them as structuring axes and administrative intermediaries for public services, thus giving rise to an ecclesiastical governmentality that drives territorial production and reconfiguration. Finally, postcolonial dynamics reveal the resurgence of new spatial polarities shaped by the complexity of evolving religious actors along the center–periphery axis of a recomposing territorialization. This study underscores the importance of a transversal approach to better govern the land legacies of religious missions, fostering a pluralistic reterritorialization of postcolonial societies in central Africa. Against the backdrop of the energy crisis and a rapidly advancing digital economy, electricity–computing synergy has become a strategic pathway to resolve energy constraints in computing power center and overcome renewable energy consumption challenges. This study breaks through the existing single-factor fragmented analysis method and systematically constructs a vertically progressive and horizontally coupled electricity–computing synergy planning model to deconstruct the core elements of computing power center construction and reconstruct the path of electricity–computing value co-creation. It proposes a multi-objective site selection decision-making method for computing power center based on linear weighting and the principle of reusability and universality, effectively avoiding the problem of overall system efficiency loss caused by single-objective optimization. Based on the empirical results from data from 31 provinces in China, this study classifies the endowments for computing power center construction, conducts targeted analyses of each province’s situation, and finds three major contradictions facing China’s computing power center: a spatial mismatch between green energy resources and service demand, a dynamic imbalance between electricity price advantages and comprehensive costs, and structural contradictions between talent reserves and sustainable development. Finally, a multi-dimensional integrated strategy was systematically constructed, encompassing demand-driven initiatives, electricity price adjustments, talent innovation, natural cold-source activation, and network upgrades, to provide guidance and policy toolkits for the government planning of computing power infrastructure development. Blockchain’s promise of decentralised, tamper-resistant services is gaining real traction in three arenas: decentralized finance (DeFi), blockchain gaming, and data-driven analytics. These sectors span finance, entertainment, and information services, offering a representative setting in which to study real-world adoption. This survey analyzes how each domain implements blockchain, identifies the incentives that accelerate uptake, and maps the technical and organizational barriers that still limit scale. By examining peer-reviewed literature and recent industry developments, this review distils common design features such as token incentives, verifiable digital ownership, and immutable data governance. It also pinpoints the following domain-specific challenges: capital efficiency in DeFi, asset portability and community engagement in gaming, and high-volume, low-latency querying in analytics. Moreover, cross-sector links are already forming, with DeFi liquidity tools supporting in-game economies and analytics dashboards improving decision-making across platforms. Building on these findings, this paper offers guidance on stronger interoperability and user-centered design and sets research priorities in consensus optimization, privacy-preserving analytics, and inclusive governance. Together, the insights equip developers, policymakers, and researchers to build scalable, interoperable platforms and reuse proven designs while avoiding common pitfalls. Full article

Assessment of TCFD Voluntary Disclosure Compliance in the Spanish Energy Sector: A Text Mining Approach to Climate Change Financial Disclosures

This study investigates voluntary compliance with the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework in 64 financial, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reports from six Spanish IBEX-35 energy firms (2020–2023) and explores the implications for intangible assets and corporate reputation, employing empirical quantitative text mining and Natural Language Processing (NLP) in Python. A validated scale-based taxonomy within the TCFD framework applies query-driven rules to extract relevant text. This enables an evaluation of aspects of the reports, facilitating the development of a compliance index measuring each company’s adherence to TCFD recommendations. All companies showed year-on-year improvements (2023 was the most comprehensive), yet none fully adhered due to information gaps. Disparities in the disclosures of Scope 1,2 and 3, persisted, suggesting reputational risks. A replicable methodological model generating a compliance index that assesses the ‘being’ (‘true performance’) versus ‘seeming’ (‘external perception’) dichotomy within sustainability reports and acts as a potential reputational barometer for stakeholders. By providing unprecedented evidence of TCFD reporting in the Spanish energy sector, this study closes a significant academic gap. Future research may analyze ESG reports using AI agents, study the impact of ESG on energy-intensive companies from AI data centers, supporting services like Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and extend this methodology to other industrial sectors. With the development of urban construction and the improvement of residents’ quality of life, the focus of governance has shifted to a people-centered approach. In the core area of Beijing, there is a mismatch between the existing large comprehensive hospitals (LCHs) and the current demand for medical technology and services. Therefore, this study focuses on tertiary LCHs in the core area of Beijing from the perspective of supply and demand (SD) and explores in depth the problem of matching the crowd concentration and the SD of the surrounding public service facilities in the process of seeking medical treatment. By comprehensively analyzing the public service facilities within a 15-min walking distance around the hospital and considering demand, supply, and transport factors, this study identifies 15 key indicators, constructs an SD coupling model (SDCM) evaluation system, and systematically evaluates the space of public service facilities around an LCH. The results show that the higher the spatial coupling and coordination of these facilities around the LCH, the more tightly the system is connected, and the more pronounced the coupling effect is in the vicinity of the hospital, which suggests that the hospital has a clustering effect on its radiating area. The public–private partnerships (PPP) mode is very popular in public infrastructure projects. The PPP model for sponge city construction (SCC) provides an effective way to curb and manage the increasingly serious ecological water problems in China. The quantitative evaluation of value for money (VFM) is an evaluation method that obtains quantitative values through a certain calculation process. However, the current studies lack a dynamic quantitative evaluation of VFM for the entire life cycle of SCC PPP projects, and cannot observe the impact of key factors on the VFM value. By constructing a system dynamics (SD) model for the VFM quantitative evaluation of SCC PPP projects from the perspective of the whole life cycle, this study can intuitively and transparently observe the impact of key factors (such as discount rate and profit margin) on the evaluation results and feasibility of adopting a PPP model in the project, offering policymakers a tool to mitigate the risks of “Pseudo-PPP” projects. After collecting cases in Anhui province from the China PPP Center, this study constructed a life cycle VFM quantitative evaluation system dynamics model suitable for SCC PPP projects that consist of the public sector comparison (PSC) value and PPP value. The results indicate that the system dynamics model can be effectively applied to the dynamic quantitative evaluation of SCC PPP projects and clarify the influence degree on and sensitivity of various factors to the VFM value. Specifically, when the discount rate increases, the decrease in the PPP value is greater than that in the PSC value, leading to an increase in the VFM value. Moreover, a reasonable profit margin is more sensitive to the VFM value and decreases as the reasonable profit margin increases. In addition, choosing different availability service fee calculation methods will result in varying the adjustment range to a reasonable profit margin that drives the adoption of VFM quantitative evaluation. These research findings have provided a viable dynamic research methodology for the quantitative VFM evaluation of SCC PPP projects. This methodology enables the dynamic visualization and easy determination of the acceptable ranges for relevant factors, offers rational policy recommendations for the quantitative evaluation of key factor values, and thereby effectively prevents PPP project violations, promoting fair and reasonable cooperation between governments and private enterprises. In recent years, forest education has become a critical element in global environmental governance. This study employed the CiteSpace tool to systematically analyze 2917 titles of the forest education literature from the Web of Science Core Collection. The goal was to explore the spatial and temporal trends, thematic evolution, and emerging research directions in this field. The research shows that in recent years, the annual number of published papers on forest education has been on a continuous upward trend, and the attention to the subject has increased significantly. The research field mainly takes the United States in North America as the core center, with the joint participation of scholars from Europe and Asia. The development trajectory of the discipline shows a trend of gradual expansion toward multidisciplinary intersections and multidisciplinary integration based on traditional forestry and environmental sciences. Research hotspots mainly focus on core issues such as forest management, climate change, ecosystem services, and biodiversity. This study investigates the evolutionary game dynamics of medical knowledge sharing (KS) among Chinese hospitals under government regulation, focusing on the strategic interactions between general hospitals, community health service centers, and governmental bodies. Leveraging evolutionary game theory, we construct a tripartite evolutionary game model incorporating replicator dynamics to characterize the strategic evolution of the involved parties. Our analysis examines the regulatory decisions of the government and the strategic choices of Chinese hospitals, considering critical factors such as KS costs, synergistic benefits, government incentives and penalties, and patient evaluations. The model is analyzed using replicator dynamic equations to derive evolutionary stable strategies (ESSs), complemented by numerical simulations for sensitivity analysis. Key findings reveal that the system’s equilibrium depends on the balance between KS benefits and costs, with government regulation and patient evaluations significantly influencing Chinese hospital behaviors. The results highlight that increasing government incentives and penalties, alongside enhancing patient feedback mechanisms, can effectively promote KS. However, excessive incentives may reduce willingness to regulate, suggesting the need for balanced policy design. This research provides novel theoretical insights and practical recommendations by (1) pioneering the application of a tripartite evolutionary game framework to model KS dynamics in China’s hierarchical healthcare system under government oversight, (2) explicitly integrating the dual influences of government regulation and patient evaluations on hospital strategies, and (3) revealing the non-linear effects of policy instruments. These contributions are crucial for optimizing Chinese medical resource allocation and fostering sustainable collaborative healthcare ecosystems. Full article

With the rapid development of China’s electric vehicle industry, the influence mechanism of government policies on consumers’ purchase intentions has become a research focus. This study integrates the technology acceptance model (TAM) and SOR theory to propose four key driving factors: policy incentive, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and test drive experience. Through stratified random sampling of 400 valid questionnaires in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, four cities with a high penetration rate of electric vehicles, the structural equation model (SEM) was used for empirical analysis. The results show that policy incentives have a significant impact on purchase intentions and play a mediating role through perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use; driving experience moderates the effects of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use on purchase intentions. Based on the research results, this paper proposes a three-stage policy optimization path: strengthening the accuracy of fiscal and tax incentives in the short term, improving the visual construction of the charging network in the medium term, and establishing a network of test drive experience centers in the long term. The research conclusions provide a theoretical basis for the government to formulate differentiated electric vehicle promotion strategies and propose a “policy-technology-service” three-dimensional implementation plan for enterprises to optimize product design and improve user experience, so as to help the sustainable development of China’s electric vehicle market.
