We present the validation of the latest version F Geophysical Data Records (GDR-F) for the TOPEX/POSEIDON (T/P) altimetry satellite mission. The GDR-F products represent a major evolution with respect to the preceding version B Merged Geophysical Data Records (MGDR-B) that were released more than two decades ago. Specifically, the numerical retracking of the altimeter waveforms significantly mitigates long-standing issues in the TOPEX altimeter measurements, such as drifts and hemispherical biases in the altimeter range and significant wave height. Additionally, GDR-F incorporates updated geophysical model standards consistent with current altimeter missions, improved sea state bias corrections, end-of-mission calibration for the microwave radiometer, and refined orbit ephemeris solutions. These enhancements notably decrease the variance of the Sea Surface Height Anomaly (SSHA) measurements, with along-track SSHA variance reduced by 26 cm2 compared to MGDR-B and crossover SSHA variance lowered by 1 cm2. GDR-F products also demonstrate improved consistency with Jason-1 measurements during their tandem mission phase, reducing the standard deviation of differences from 6 cm to 4 cm when compared to Jason-1 GDR-E data. These results confirm that GDR-F products offer a more accurate and consistent T/P data record, enhancing the quality of long-term sea level studies and supporting inter-mission altimetry continuity. Application of Neural Networks to Analyse the Spatial Distribution of Bicycle Traffic Before, During and After the Closure of the Mill Road Bridge in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom

Traffic congestions due to construction and maintenance works of road infrastructure cause travel delays, unpredictability and less tolerant road users. Bicyclists are more flexible with road closures, shifting to alternative routes, public transport and other active transport depending on the infrastructure, quality and transport services. However, the mixed traffic environment near road closures increases the safety risks for bicyclists. Traditional traffic monitoring systems rely on costly and demanding intrusive sensors. The application of wireless sensors and machine learning algorithms can enhance the analysis and prediction ability of traffic distribution and characteristics in the proximity of road closures. This paper applies artificial neural networks (ANNs) coupled with a Generalised Delta Rule (GDR) algorithm to analyse the sensor traffic data before, during and after the closure of the Mill Road Bridge in Cambridge City in the United Kingdom. The ANN models show that the traffic volume of motorbikes (44%) and buses (34%) and the proximity of Mill Road Bridge (39%) are significant factors affecting bicycle traffic before the closure. During the bridge closure, the proximity of the bridge (99%) and traffic volume of large rigid vehicles (51%) are the most important factors of bicycle distribution in nearby streets leading cyclists to unsafe detours. After the reopening of the Mill Road Bridge, unclear signage caused continued traffic impact, with motorbikes (17%) and large vehicles (24%) playing the most significant role in the spatial distribution of bicycle traffic. This paper emphasises safety concerns from mixed traffic and highlights the importance of cost-effective sensor-based traffic monitoring and analysis of the sensor data using neural networks. Background/Objectives: Post-translationally modified peptide fragments of fetuin-A (FetA) were identified as a potential biomarker of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). An independent association between urinary FetA-derived peptide levels (uPTM3-FetA) and DKD progression in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) was evidenced. This study aimed to explore uPTM3-FetA excretion and its associations with insulin resistance, inflammatory and metabolic biomarkers in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D), and the normal albuminuria and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) > 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Methods: uPTM3-FetA levels in aliquots of 24 h urine specimens, routine laboratory renal, metabolic and inflammatory tests, adipokines (leptin, adiponectin, resistin), and insulin resistance, assessed as the estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR), were measured in a cohort of 169 adult T1D patients. To evaluate the changes in early renal dysfunction, the cohort was divided according to the median eGFR. Above- and below-median-eGFR groups were considered as having normal and declining kidney function, respectively. Results: The median (IQR) uPTM3-FetA level was 11.7 (8.43–16.65 µg/24 h), with no significant difference between males and females, as well as normal and declining kidney function patients. However, a sex-specific analysis revealed a significantly higher uPTM3-FetA excretion in male T1D patients with lower eGFRs, when compared to those with higher eGFRs, whereas no such difference was observed in female patients. BMI, hs-CRP, resistin and HDL-cholesterol were identified as independent predictors of uPTM3-FetA excretion. Conclusions: Our results implicate the potential role of uPTM3-FetA in the detection of an early renal dysfunction in male patients with T1DM and pinpoint the importance of a sex-specific approach in diabetes diagnostics and research. Background and Objectives: Insulin resistance (IR) is a key factor involved in the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Besides its role in the pathogenesis of T2D, insulin resistance is associated with impairment of glycemic control, reduced achievement of glycemic targets, and increases in cardiovascular risk and diabetes complications, being thus a negative prognosis factor. Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are therapies for T2D which demonstrated, besides glycemic control, improvements of biomarkers traditionally associated with IR and inflammation. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of SGLT2i treatment on IR and inflammation biomarkers in patients with T2D. Materials and Methods: In a retrospective study, 246 patients with T2D treated with SGLT2i for a median of 5 years were evaluated regarding IR (estimated glucose disposal rate—eGDR, triglyceride/glucose index, triglyceride/HDLc index) and inflammation biomarkers (neutrophils to lymphocyte ratio, platelets to lymphocytes ratio and C-reactive protein) before and after intervention with SGLT2i. Results: After a median 5 years of SGLT2i treatment, patients with T2D had a higher eGDR (6.07 vs. 5.24 mg/kg/min; p < 0.001), lower triglyceride/HDLc ratio (3.34 vs. 3.52, p < 0.001) and lower triglyceride/glucose index (9.23 vs. 9.58; p < 0.001). The inflammation biomarkers decreased after SGLT2i therapy: C-reactive protein (3.07 mg/L vs. 4.37 mg/L), NLR (0.68 vs. 0.72; p < 0.001), and PLR (115 vs. 122; p < 0.001). Intervention with SGLT2i also improved the biomarkers associated with diabetes complications and cardiovascular risk: HbA1c (7.1% vs. 8.4%; p < 0.001), body mass index (30.0 vs. 31.5 kg/m2; p < 0.001) and urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (4.75 vs. 11.00 mg/g; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Treatment with SGLT2i in patients with T2D leads to decreases in IR and inflammation. These mechanisms may partially explain the additional cardiovascular and renal risk reductions associated with SGLT2i therapy, alongside the improvements in glycemic control, in patients with T2D. Food Environments and Diet Quality Among Vendors and Consumers in Five Traditional Urban Markets in Kenya

Background/Objectives: Traditional food markets are essential in urban food environments in Kenya and other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). They provide affordable fresh food, particularly for low-income urban communities, and are vital places of livelihoods and local economic activities. Despite their importance, associations between market-related factors and diet quality for vendors and consumers are underexplored. This study explores these relationships to inform policies aimed at improving diets and nutrition in LMICs. Methods: Survey data were collected from 1042 vendors and 876 consumers in five urban markets in Kenya. The survey assessed market-related factors, consumer purchasing behavior, socioeconomic factors, and dietary outcomes using the Kenya Diet Quality Questionnaire. Linear regression models were employed to evaluate associations between the availability of foods, consumers’ purchase of foods, proximity to the market, reported sickness from food, and diet quality indicators, including the Dietary Diversity Score (DDS), Global Dietary Recommendations (GDRs), NCD-Protect, and NCD-Risk scores. Results: Vendors’ own dietary outcomes were characterized by lower DDS, NCD-Protect, and NCD-Risk scores but higher GDR scores compared to consumers. Significant associations were identified between the purchase of specific food groups (e.g., vegetables, legumes, and nuts) and improved diet quality for consumers. Longer travel times were linked to lower diet quality for both vendors and consumers. Socioeconomic factors, such as gender, age, and education, significantly influenced diet quality. Conclusions: Traditional markets play a pivotal role in urban food environments. Policies that enhance market access and support vendors and consumers, particularly women, young adults, and low-income groups, are essential to improving diets and nutrition outcomes in LMICs. The relations between religion and the state in the socialist-governed states of Eastern Europe in 1945–1989 are generally framed using the term “persecution of religion”. On the other hand, significant differences existed in the region, from limited freedom of religion in Yugoslavia to a prohibition of religious practice in Albania. From the side of religion, these relations were significantly formed by the attitudes and activities of religious leaders. Which options were adopted by key religious actors in a political environment hostile to religion? What is to be learned about religion in authoritarian systems? This qualitative study draws on the case of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), governed in 1949–1989 by the Socialist Unity Party of Germany. We studied professional biographies of prominent religious dignitaries and a comprehensive volume of files from the Ministry for State Security of the GDR in order to conceptualize their attitudes and activities according to a two-dimensional classification (towards the state and towards society), which enabled an overview of the range of their options, and identified the types of religious dignitaries in authoritarian systems. This analysis revealed that a variety of attitudes and activities of religious leaders existed in the GDR. Full article

Pentadesma butyracea is a medicinal plant of which bark decoctions are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of diarrhea symptoms in Gabon. The aim of the present work was to perform phytochemical and pharmacological analyses of decoctions of P. butyracea bark. In a principal approach, spectrophotometric analyses were used to quantify phenolic compounds, followed by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry analysis that allowed the identification of flavanone–flavone dimers as the main metabolites. Pharmacological analyses showed the absence of toxicity, thus confirming the safety of use of this decoction in traditional medicine. The antioxidant activity of the bark decoctions was demonstrated to depend on their phenolic contents. The decoction of stem barks harvested during the rainy season also induced a dose-dependent relaxation of isolated ileum fragments from Wistar rats. In addition, the antidiarrheal activity of P. butyracea barks was investigated against castor oil-induced diarrhea. The oral administration of different concentrations of this decoction led to a decrease in wet stools, indicating an antidiarrheal effect at the doses that were used. These results encourage the deepening of bio-guided research on P. butyracea bark decoctions in order to propose standard traditional medical treatments. Full article

Recently, when examining the differential internal pair creation coefficients of 8Be, 4He and 12C nuclei, we observed peak-like anomalies in the angular correlation of the e+e pairs. This was interpreted as the creation and immediate decay of an intermediate bosonic particle with a mass of mXc2 17 MeV, receiving the name X17 in subsequent publications. In this paper, our latest results obtained for the X17 particle are presented by investigating the e+e pair correlations in the decay of the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) of 8Be. Our results initiated a significant number of new experiments all over the world to detect the X17 particle and determine its properties. In this paper, we will also conduct a mini-review of the experiments whose results are already published, as well as the ones closest to being published. Full article

The present study characterizes gamma dose rate (GDR) concentrations in Bilbao, located in the northern Iberian Peninsula, utilizing a comprehensive 10-min interval database spanning from 2009 to 2018. This station belongs to the radiological environmental monitoring of the Basque Country network. The daily average GDR was found to be 0.07624 ± 0.00004 µSv/h, with the daily 95th percentile averaging 0.08026 ± 0.00007 µSv/h throughout the entire period. Our analysis specifically addresses the impact of precipitation on GDR, revealing a higher correlation coefficient for daily 95th percentile values compared to daily averages. Additionally, the influence of the Galerna (GL) event, a natural meteorological phenomenon in this region, on GDR was investigated, noting that it can develop both with and without precipitation. Understanding the interaction between GDR and this meteorological scenario is vital for the development of more reliable radiological monitoring strategies and for safeguarding public health. For this purpose, 40 GL events were analyzed. The present results indicate that GDR values frequently exceed alarm levels when a GL is formed. These GDR peaks should be considered natural radiological events, necessitating the classification of such GDR peaks as false alarms within the radiological monitoring network. To explain them in detail, 10-min time series of precipitation and radon outdoor concentrations were analyzed. The results demonstrate that the GL event with precipitation is a meteorological scenario that can be associated with false alarms. The present analysis provides a distinct contrast in radon behavior under the same meteorological event in case of being developed with precipitation or without precipitation. The findings from this analysis are crucial for avoiding and understanding false radiological alarms triggered in the monitoring network, thereby enhancing the accuracy of radiological data interpretation and improving public safety measures. Leveraging Classifier Performance Using Heuristic Optimization for Detecting Cardiovascular Disease from PPG Signals

Background/Objectives: Photoplethysmography (PPG) signals, which measure blood volume changes through light absorption, are increasingly used for non-invasive cardiovascular disease (CVD) detection. Analyzing PPG signals can help identify irregular heart patterns and other indicators of CVD. Methods: This research involves a total of 41 subjects sourced from the CapnoBase database, consisting of 21 normal subjects and 20 CVD cases. In the initial stage, heuristic optimization algorithms, such as ABC-PSO, the Cuckoo Search algorithm (CSA), and the Dragonfly algorithm (DFA), were applied to reduce the dimension of the PPG data. Next, these Dimensionally Reduced (DR) PPG data are then fed into various classifiers such as Linear Regression (LR), Linear Regression with Bayesian Linear Discriminant Classifier (LR-BLDC), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), PCA-Firefly, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Kernel LDA (KLDA), Probabilistic LDA (ProbLDA), SVM-Linear, SVM-Polynomial, and SVM-RBF, to identify CVD. Classifier performance is evaluated using Accuracy, Kappa, MCC, F1 Score, Good Detection Rate (GDR), Error rate, and Jaccard Index (JI). Results: The SVM-RBF classifier for ABC PSO dimensionality reduced values outperforms other classifiers, achieving the highest accuracy of 95.12% along with the minimum error rate of 4.88%. In addition to that, it provides an MCC and kappa value of 0.90, a GDR and F1 score of 95%, and a Jaccard Index of 90.48%. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that heuristic-based optimization and machine learning classification of PPG signals are highly effective for the non-invasive detection of cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of overweight and obesity increases in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, the impact of fat accumulation on glucose dynamics in T1D is poorly understood. We assessed continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) parameters in patients with T1D depending on their body weight, body composition, and insulin sensitivity. In 547 patients, including 238 overweight/obese individuals, CGM-derived time in range (TIR) and glucose variability (GV) were estimated. Body composition was assessed by DXA. Estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR) was used as an indicator of insulin sensitivity. Overweight/obese patients, when compared to normal-weight ones, have a lower time below range (TBR) (<3 mmol/L), GV, and experienced fewer episodes of low glucose. In men, lower TIR, higher time above range (TAR), and GV reduction were associated with central adiposity assessed by total, trunk, and android fat mass. In women, gynoid fat mass only was associated with a lower TIR and higher TAR. The eGDR was a positive predictor of TIR and a negative predictor of TAR, TBR, and GV in men and women. In conclusion, adiposity in people with T1D is associated with a lower risk of CGM-confirmed hypoglycemia, higher TAR, and reduced GV. These features of daily glucose dynamics may be mediated by insulin resistance. Full article

Background and Objectives: Chronic total occlusion (CTO) is a complex lesion of coronary artery disease (CAD) with a detection rate of approximately 25% on coronary angiography. CTO patients generally experience poor quality of life and prognosis. This study aims to evaluate the association between the estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR), a surrogate marker for insulin resistance (IR), and the prognosis of CTO PCI patients, as well as to investigate the potential role of the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in this process. Methods: We retrospectively included 1482 non-diabetic patients who underwent successful CTO PCI at Anzhen Hospital between January 2018 and December 2021. The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs). Clinical characteristics, biochemical markers, and interventional records were collected, and the eGDR and SII were calculated. Cox regression, restricted cubic splines (RCSs), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, and Kaplan–Meier curves were used to assess associations. Results: MACEs occurred in 158 patients (10.67%). Patients with MACEs had lower eGDR and higher SII levels. A high eGDR significantly reduced MACE risk (Q4 vs. Q1: HR 0.06, 95% CI 0.03–0.12), while a high SII increased it (Q4 vs. Q1: HR 3.32, 95% CI 1.78–6.33). The combination of low eGDRs and high SIIs predicted the highest MACE risk (HR 4.36, 95% CI 2.71–6.01). The SII partially mediated the relationship between eGDR and MACEs. Conclusions: A low eGDR and high SII are significant predictors of poor prognosis in non-diabetic CTO PCI patients. Combining the eGDR and the SII provides a comprehensive assessment for better predicting cardiovascular outcomes. Full article

(1) Background: Although daily time-use is associated with diet quality and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in children, their interdependence remains unexplored. This study first examined the associations between reallocating daily movement time and diet quality and CRF, and second the mediating role of diet quality in the relationship between daily time-use and CRF. (2) Methods: This study included 1131 Chinese children (aged 8 to 10 years; median [interquartile range]: 8.5 [8.3, 8.8]) at baseline (September 2022) and 1268 children at the 9-month follow-up (June 2023) from the OptiChild study. Daily durations of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sleep, and sedentary behavior (e.g., screen time) were self-reported or proxy-reported by parents. Diet quality was assessed via the Diet Quality Questionnaire (DQQ), which uses a 24 h dietary recall and is categorized according to the Global Dietary Recommendations (GDR) score and Food Group Diversity Score (FGDS). The CRF was measured using VO2max after the 20 m shuttle run test. Longitudinal associations between daily time-use, diet quality, and CRF were calculated using isotemporal substitution models. Mediation analyses were used to determine whether diet quality mediated the associations between daily time-use and CRF. (3) Results: Reallocation of 30 min from screen time to MVPA resulted in significant improvements in the GDR score (β baseline = 0.11, p = 0.024; β follow-up = 0.26, p < 0.001), FGDS (β baseline = 0.11, p = 0.006; β follow-up = 0.19, p < 0.001), and CRF (β baseline = 0.40, p < 0.001; β follow-up = 0.26, p = 0.001). Diet quality partially mediated the associations between MVPA, screen time, and CRF. Substituting 30 min of screen time for MVPA led to diet quality mediating a proportion of the association with CRF (GDR score: 11.4%, FGDS: 6.6%). (4) Conclusions: These findings underscore the importance of optimizing daily time-use of MVPA and screen time and improving diet quality to promote physical fitness in school-aged children. Sexual dimorphism influences cardiovascular outcomes in type 1 diabetes (T1D), with women facing a higher relative risk of macrovascular events compared to men, especially after menopause. This study hypothesizes that abnormalities in intermediate metabolism may be associated with cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) in T1D. We aim to assess low molecular weight metabolites (LMWM) as markers of CAN in T1D, considering the effects of sexual dimorphism and age. In this cross-sectional study, we included 323 subjects with T1D (147 women and 176 men), with a mean age of 41 ± 13 years. A total of 44 women and 41 men were over 50 years old. CAN was assessed using Ewing’s tests, and serum metabolites were analyzed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR). Patients with CAN had lower levels of valine, isoleucine, and threonine, and higher levels of lactate, compared to those without CAN. These differences persisted after adjusting for BMI and estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR). In a logistic regression model (R² = 0.178, p < 0.001), the main determinants of CAN included isoleucine [Exp(β) = 0.972 (95% CI 0.952; 0.003)], age [Exp(β) = 1.031 (95% CI 1.010; 1.053)], A1c [Exp(β) = 1.361 (95% CI 1.058; 1.752)], and microangiopathy [Exp(β) = 2.560 (95% CI 1.372; 4.778)]. Sex influenced LMWM profiles, with over half of the metabolites differing between men and women. However, no interactions were found between CAN and sex, or between sex, age, and CAN, on metabolomics profiles. Our findings suggest an association between CAN and LMWM levels in T1D. The sexual dimorphism observed in amino acid metabolites was unaffected by the presence of CAN. Full article

The grain moisture content of maize inbred lines at maturity is one of the most important indicators for mechanical harvesting of kernels. In this study, 116 maize inbred lines from a wide range of sources were used as research materials and 30 traits of grain moisture content were analyzed using multivariate statistical analysis. The results showed that all 30 traits had some correlations. Principal component analysis downscaled the 30 traits into 10 principal component factors, reflecting 77.674% of the information in the original traits. Cluster analysis categorized the 116 inbred lines into 5 major groups containing 26, 29, 31, 16 and 14 inbred lines. Based on the D value of the overall evaluation, discriminant analysis reclassified the maize inbred lines by principal component scores and 98 maize inbred lines were correctly discriminated with a probability of 84.48%, which can be regarded as a relatively reliable clustering result. The stepwise regression method was further used to screen seven traits: GMC2, GDR1, HMC3, NH, GDR2, CD and EL and to establish a comprehensive evaluation model for the grain moisture content of maize inbred lines. Among 116 maize inbred lines, 14, represented by H21 and MS71, had the lowest grain moisture content at maturity. Full article
