The fish liver, as the main detoxification organ, is highly susceptible to xenobiotic exposure, often resulting in various hepatopathies. The cytochrome P450 system plays a central role in xenobiotic metabolism, with cytochrome P450 reductase (CYPOR) supplying the electrons required for CYP enzyme activity. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the ecological state of a reservoir and fish health, including CYPOR levels, through hematological, bacteriological, and histological analyses. Samples of water and fish were collected from 12 littoral sites of Lake Ladoga. A total of 1360 specimens of fish from carp (Cyprinidae) and perch (Percidae) families were examined. For histological examination and CYPOR level determination, we selected 40 specimens using a blind randomization method. This sample size was sufficient for statistical analyses. Hematological smears were stained with azure eosin; bacteriological cultures were grown on multiple media; liver samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Sudan III. CYPOR levels in liver homogenates were measured by ELISA-test. Physical and hydrochemical analyses indicated a high pollution level in the littoral zones. Isolated bacterial species were non-pathogenic but exhibited broad antibiotic resistance. Hematological evaluation revealed erythrocyte vacuolization and anisocytosis. Histological analysis showed marked fatty degeneration in hepatocytes, indicating toxic damage. CYPOR concentrations ranged from 0.3–0.4 ng/mL in healthy fish to 5–6 ng/mL in exposed specimens, showing strong correlation between environmental influence and enzyme activity. These findings demonstrate the potential of CYPOR as a sensitive biomarker for biomonitoring programs. The integrated methodological approach provides a model for assessing aquatic ecosystem health and identifying zones requiring priority remediation. Full article

Cannabis is one of the most common intoxicants used worldwide. Cannabis is widely consumed worldwide and can lead to visual alterations. However, most of the available information on its effects comes from studies conducted in developed countries, while data remain limited in developing regions such as Morocco, despite its significant role in cannabis cultivation. The aim of this study was to explore multiple visual parameters and self-perceived eyesight in cannabis users in Morocco. A cross-sectional study was conducted between March 2022 and April 2023 in Marrakesh, Morocco, in cannabis consumers. Data collection was performed in two phases. First a hetero-administrated questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographics, intoxicant consumption habit information, and eye health information. Then, several visual acuity tests were performed, including a preliminary examination, a visual function assessment, and an eye health assessment. Ninety-five cannabis users participated in this study. The majority were single (62.1%) males (87.4%). All lived in the Marrakesh-Safi region (100%), and most had daily activities such as having a job or being a student (77.9%). Most had vision conditions like astigmatism or myopia (83.4%). The majority had multiple addictions (66.5%), mainly to tobacco (43.7%). Hashish was the main cannabis type used (57.9%), and smoked cannabis was the principal mode of consumption (94.7%). Many had a family history of cannabis addiction (58.9%). Day light sensitivity (66.3%) and appearance of eye symptoms after cannabis use (90.5%) were declared by the majority. In most cases, no impact on far or near vision or vision impairment due to cannabis use were declared. Our results showed that using cannabis could have significant adverse effects on visual functions. Full article

Antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infections are a persistent public health issue causing excess death and economic impacts globally. Because AMR in clinical settings is often acquired from nonpathogenic bacteria that surround us, environmental surveillance must be better characterized. It has been well established that metals can co-select for bacterial AMR. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that compromised microbial community diversity may lead to community invasion by antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Widespread legacy mining has led to acid mine drainage and metal contamination of waterways and sediments throughout the western United States, potentially compromising microbial community diversity while simultaneously selecting for AMR bacteria. Our study objectives were to survey metal contaminated sediments from the Bonita Peak Mining District (BPMD) in southwestern Colorado, USA, compared to sites downstream in Durango, CO for bacterial and ARG diversity. Sediment bacteria were characterized using 16S rRNA Ilumina and metagenomic sequencing. We found that overall, bacterial diversity was lower in metal-contaminated, acidic sites (p = 0.04). Metagenomic sequencing revealed 31 different ARGs, with those encoding for efflux pumps (mex and spe gene families) substantially more prevalent in the BPMD sites, elucidating a specific AMR marker fingerprint from the high metal concentration sediments. Raising awareness and providing antimicrobial tracking techniques to resource limited communities could help provide information needed for better antibiotic use recommendations and environmental monitoring. Local vegetables and spices are essential components of traditional food and health systems in northeastern Thailand, yet quantitative ethnobotanical evidence remains limited. This study documents the diversity, utilization, and cultural significance of vegetables and spices used in Sang Kho Sub-district, Phu Phan District, Sakon Nakhon Province. Ethnobotanical data were collected in 2025 through field surveys, voucher-based plant identification, semi-structured interviews, and participant observation involving 92 informants across 23 villages. Cultural significance and medicinal knowledge were evaluated using the Cultural Importance Index (CI), Informant Consensus Factor (FIC), and Fidelity Level (FL). A total of 113 taxa belonging to 94 genera and 49 plant families were recorded. Poaceae and Zingiberaceae were the most species-rich families. Native species slightly predominated (51.33%), and herbaceous taxa were most common. Leaves were the most frequently used plant part. Most taxa were used as vegetables (92 species), followed by traditional medicines (20 species), spices or seasonings (18 species), and food ingredients or culinary additives (18 species). The highest CI values were recorded for Allium ascalonicum L. (1.152), Capsicum annuum L. (1.098), and Coriandrum sativum L. (1.043). FIC values ranged from 0.60 to 1.00, with complete consensus for circulatory and neurological disorders. Cymbopogon citratus showed the highest FL (75%) for gastrointestinal uses. These findings demonstrate the close integration of food and medicine in local plant-use systems and provide baseline data for food system resilience and cultural knowledge conservation. Full article

As population aging accelerates, the mounting burden on informal family caregivers in areas lacking formal care systems threatens the sustainability of elder care. This study aims at evaluating how the rural living environment and external connectivity jointly alleviate caregiver burden and exploring whether regional accessibility serves as a substitute for local infrastructure deficits. Guided by Ecological Systems Theory, we analyzed a cross-sectional dataset of 327 matched caregiver-recipient dyads from rural China using multivariate regression and mediation models. Results indicate that a favorable local environment reduces burden both directly and indirectly through improved recipient health. Crucially, county-level accessibility moderates this relationship via a substitution effect, where the marginal relief from local environmental improvements is most potent in isolated areas but diminishes where external access is convenient. Dimension-specific analyses show that developmental and physical strains are particularly sensitive to these factors. We conclude that sustaining informal care requires a dual-pathway strategy: prioritizing local “soft” assets like community safety and cultural activities while enhancing regional connectivity to service hubs. Ultimately, this research provides empirical evidence and a theoretical framework for enhancing rural informal care sustainability through environmental optimization, thereby advancing Sustainable Development Goals regarding health, reduced inequalities, and sustainable communities. Liver cancer, also known as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), remains a major global health concern, with high mortality driven by late-stage diagnosis, limited treatment efficacy, and frequent therapeutic resistance. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a large family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases, are central to the biological processes that drive liver tumor initiation and progression. By degrading and reorganizing extracellular matrix components, MMPs facilitate tumor expansion, tissue invasion, and metastatic dissemination. In addition, these enzymes regulate the availability of growth factors, cytokines, and chemokines, thereby influencing angiogenesis, inflammation, immune cell recruitment, and the development of an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Aberrant expression or activity of multiple MMP family members is consistently associated with aggressive clinicopathologic features, including vascular invasion, increased metastatic potential, and reduced patient survival, highlighting their promise as prognostic markers and actionable therapeutic targets. Past attempts to modulate MMP activity were hindered by broad inhibition profiles and dose-limiting toxicities, underscoring the need for improved specificity and delivery strategies. Recent advances in molecular design, biologics engineering, and nanotechnology have revitalized interest in MMP targeting by enabling more selective, context-dependent modulation of proteolytic activity. Preclinical studies demonstrate that carefully tuned MMP inhibition can limit tumor invasion, enhance anti-angiogenic responses, and potentially improve the efficacy of existing systemic therapies, including immuno-oncology agents. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the multifaceted roles of MMPs in HCC pathobiology and evaluates emerging therapeutic strategies that may finally unlock the clinical potential of targeting these proteases. The dung beetle family Geotrupidae (Scarabaeoidea) plays a vital ecological role in nutrient cycling and soil health, yet the scarcity of complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) data has hindered phylogenetic and comparative studies within this family. Here, we sequenced, assembled, and annotated the first complete mitogenomes of Geotrupes stercorarius and Phelotrupes auratus, collected from the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. Comparative analysis of these two novel mitogenomes with eight existing mitogenomes revealed conserved architectural features across Geotrupidae, such as gene arrangement, tRNA secondary structures, and small intergenic spacers. Nucleotide composition was largely conserved, though marked divergence occurred at the third codon positions. Substantial structural variation was observed in non-coding regions, particularly in the control region and the nad2-trnW spacer. Evolutionary analyses indicated strong purifying selection across all protein-coding genes, with no evidence of widespread positive selection linked to high-altitude adaptation. Phylogenetic reconstruction consistently recovered the relationships (Bolboceratinae, (Lethrinae, Geotrupinae)), with Anoplotrupes and Geotrupes forming sister genera within Geotrupinae. This study provides additional mitogenomic resources and a well-supported phylogenetic framework for Geotrupidae, resolving key taxonomic uncertainties and establishing a basis for future evolutionary and ecological research. Antimicrobial resistance represents a critical challenge to global public health, driving the search for bioactive compounds in medicinal plants. The Fabaceae family stands out for its chemical richness and pharmacological properties; however, in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico—an area of high diversity due to its location between the Nearctic and Neotropical regions—this flora remains largely unexplored. The objective of this review was to analyze the global scientific literature on the Fabaceae of Tamaulipas, integrating floristic records, phytochemistry, and antimicrobial activity. Of the 347 species recorded in the state, only 60 have phytochemical studies, and 43 have documented medicinal uses. The results show that extraction methods predominantly use polar solvents to isolate phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and alkaloids, which show efficacy against pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. Despite limited local ethnobotanical documentation, the potential demonstrated by these species in other regions positions Tamaulipas as a strategic reservoir. This review identifies research gaps and emphasizes the need for systematic studies that validate traditional uses and prioritize bioprospecting of the flora of northeastern Mexico for the development of new therapeutic alternatives. Patulin (PAT) is a fatal mycotoxin that exerts serious threats to human and animal health. Biodegradation of PAT is considered to be one of the promising ways for controlling its contamination. In this study, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 6076 (LP 6076) with reliable removal efficiency on PAT was screened out from three lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains. It was found that the PAT was eliminated through degradation by LP 6076, and the intracellular proteins played a crucial role in PAT degradation with the induction of PAT. The proteomic analysis showed that the response of LP 6076 to PAT was by a concerted effort to repair DNA damage, in parallel to adaptive changes in cell wall biosynthesis and central metabolism. Eleven differentially expressed proteins with high fold changes were picked out and identified as PAT degradation candidate enzymes. The 3D structures of the candidate enzymes were predicted, and molecular docking between the enzymes and PAT was performed. Five enzymes, including Acetoin utilization AcuB protein (AU), GHKL domain-containing protein (GHLK), Dihydroneopterin aldolase (DA), YdeI/OmpD-associated family protein (YDEL), and Transcription regulator protein (TR), could dock with PAT with lower affinity and shorter distance. Through molecular docking analysis, DA was ultimately identified as a potential key degrading enzyme. The choice of DA was substantiated by its superior combination of strong binding affinity and a productive binding pose with PAT. VAL84 and GLN51 residues of DA were likely the active sites, forming four hydrogen bonds with PAT. Our study could accelerate the commercial application of biodegradation toward PAT decontamination. Background: Nurses’ clinical reasoning is increasingly being recognized as a core competence that enhances the quality and safety of care across diverse healthcare settings. Nurses with refined clinical reasoning skills contribute significantly to improved health outcomes and broader health gains. In emergency departments, this competence is essential to rapidly assessing complex problems, anticipating complications, and preventing the deterioration of patients’ clinical conditions. Such expertise enables nurses to discern the severity of clinical situations quickly and intervene effectively. Objectives: The aims of this study were to analyze the clinical reasoning process of nurses and develop a theory that explains this process in emergency care settings. Methodology: This qualitative study explored the following research question: “How do nurses enact the clinical reasoning process in emergency departments?” The Grounded Theory methodology was used, with a theoretical sample of 20 nurses. Data collection methods included in-depth interviews, participant observation, and field notes. Results: The theoretical analysis identified clinical reasoning as a substantive theory composed of two subprocesses: Diagnostic Nursing Assessment and Therapeutic Nursing Intervention. Nurses’ clinical reasoning determines two levels of patient severity—Level I, life-threatening situations (immediate risk), and Level II, non-life-threatening situations (expressed problems)—according to which nursing interventions are adjusted. Conclusions: The Nursing Clinical Reasoning Model is a dynamic and continuous process that involves both Diagnostic Nursing Assessment and Nursing Therapeutic Intervention. It is deeply rooted in the nurse–patient–family relationship and is shaped by the specific care context, which influences nurses’ assessments and interventions and patients’ responses and behaviors. Background and Objectives: Bladder cancer (BC) represents a significant global health burden, ranking as the tenth most commonly diagnosed malignancy worldwide, with an incidence rate of 5.6 per 100,000 person-years annually. The research team aimed to summarize evidence on specialized nursing-led interventions for bladder cancer management across the disease continuum. Materials and Methods: This scoping review used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) methodology to search four databases from January 2018 to November 2025. Results: This concise but informative scoping review of 20 studies revealed substantial clinical and patient-reported benefits from specialized nursing interventions. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols incorporating structured nursing care demonstrated a 35% reduction in postoperative complications. Integrated nursing interventions during postoperative intravesical therapy significantly improved patient satisfaction, treatment compliance, and self-efficacy while reducing anxiety and depression. Digital health platforms, including internet-based and mobile applications, proved effective in reducing caregiver burden, enhancing disease knowledge, and improving coping strategies. Preoperative stoma education and postoperative ostomy care management significantly improved self-efficacy, stoma care knowledge, and overall health-related quality of life. Psychosocial interventions, including cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based approaches, demonstrated significant improvements in quality of life and reductions in fear of recurrence, depression, and anxiety. However, a critical evidence gap exists regarding bladder cancer-specific mental health interventions. Conclusions: Specialized nursing-led care plays a critical role in strengthening clinical and assistive practice in bladder cancer. Evidence from this scoping review shows that nursing-led interventions significantly improve clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, symptom management, and quality of life across all phases of bladder cancer care while reducing caregiver burden and enhancing psychological well-being for both patients and families, reinforcing the value of integrating specialized nursing roles into routine bladder cancer management. Background/Objectives: Nurses are susceptible to compassion fatigue due to the nature of their professional responsibilities. Factors contributing to this vulnerability include daily patient interactions and organizational elements within their work environment, as well as work-related stress and sociodemographic characteristics, including age, marital status, years of professional experience, and, notably, gender. This research investigates the relationship between compassion fatigue and the levels of anxiety and depression, as well as the professional quality of life among nurses providing care to dementia patients in Greece. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out with 115 nurses working in dementia care centers in Greece. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL-5), and the participants’ personal, demographic, and professional information were all included in an electronic questionnaire. Multiple regression analysis was used. Results: A total of 42.6% of nurses rated their working environment as favorable. Additionally, 23.5% of the sample exhibited high levels of compassion satisfaction, whereas 46.1% demonstrated low levels of burnout. Female gender (p = 0.022) and a higher family income (p = 0.046) was positively associated with compassion satisfaction. Regression analysis indicated that elevated symptoms of anxiety and depression were found to correlate with decreased compassion satisfaction, increased burnout, and heightened secondary post-traumatic stress. Conclusions: Engaging in the care of patients with dementia, particularly throughout the pandemic period, has underscored a pronounced susceptibility to compassion fatigue, physical fatigue, pain, psychological stress, and a reduced quality of life. These results highlight the importance for nursing management to adopt specific organizational measures, including proper staffing levels, balancing workloads, and conducting routine mental health assessments. Recognizing cervical cancer as a major public health concern, Romania was among the first EU countries to introduce human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination in 2008. Despite multiple strategies implemented over the past 17 years, HPV vaccine coverage remains one of the lowest in the EU, while cervical cancer mortality rates are among the highest. To explore the underlying factors, we conducted a cross-sectional study involving 209 family physicians at the national level. The study assessed their attitudes, practice, knowledge, and training needs related to HPV vaccination. The majority of physicians (90%) reported that they provide HPV vaccination services, and 88.5% considered themselves to have good and very good knowledge about HPV, which they routinely share during consultations with patients. However, respondents noted that both physician and public attitudes toward HPV vaccination are only moderately positive, which limits vaccine uptake and the success of prevention efforts. Parental hesitation was the main barrier, mentioned by 81.8% of respondents. The majority (71.3%) of doctors indicated that they were able to adequately respond to patients’ questions, but 81.4% of respondents expressed the view that additional training is needed for healthcare professionals on HPV infection and vaccination. These findings highlight the need for coordinated efforts to increase demand and trust in HPV vaccination. Recommended strategies include targeted professional training, public information campaigns, and the development of strong cross-sector partnerships to support vaccination efforts. Full article

Intergenerational trauma significantly affects the health and mental health of African American families, particularly women whose lives are shaped by systemic inequities and historical oppression. This scoping review examines how trauma and resilience are transmitted across generations in African American communities, with a focus on dyads such as mother–child and mother–daughter relationships and a conceptual grandmother–mother–daughter triad. The review aims to identify mechanisms of trauma transmission and resilience and to inform culturally responsive, multigenerational interventions. Peer-reviewed studies published between 2012 and 2025 were identified that included African American caregivers and children and addressed biological, psychological, social, cultural, and resilience dimensions of intergenerational processes. Data were synthesized using a dimensional conceptual analysis approach. Findings indicate that intergenerational trauma is perpetuated through chronic stress and discrimination, maternal mental health challenges, family structure and caregiving strain, and cultural narratives about strength and self-reliance. At the same time, resilience is transmitted through sensitive caregiving, spirituality and faith, social and kin support, racial socialization, and economic survival strategies that draw on cultural and historical knowledge. These results underscore the importance of addressing intergenerational trauma holistically by integrating dyadic evidence within a broader conceptual triadic framework. Culturally responsive, multigenerational interventions that leverage family and community strengths and make space for emotional vulnerability are essential for interrupting cycles of trauma and fostering healing within African American families. Expanding longevity, together with a decrease in mortality, leads to an increase in the older population worldwide. In this review, ageing and older adults, as well as psychosocial and advanced technological interventions, will be discussed. Older adults are associated with an increased incidence of multimorbidity and disability; thus, they have a higher demand for health services than younger individuals. Challenges in welfare services and inadequate family and community-based care support negatively impact the psychosocial and economic wellbeing of older people. Active ageing and successful ageing are crucial aspects for a better quality of life in this age group, as there is a complex interplay of different domains and disease types that influence quality of life in older adults. Additionally, promoting the social participation of older adults is vital for improving their quality of life. Furthermore, the use of technology in older adults has a positive impact on their quality of life; however, aside from the promotion and implementation of technological interventions, challenges persist at all levels of acceptance and use. A better understanding of these challenges and implementing measures to overcome them will have a significant impact on the technological acceptance of older adults and their use in daily life activities, resulting in more favourable quality of life outcomes.
