Despite high rates of emotional dysregulation among autistic children, few studies have explored interventions addressing dysregulation. Naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBIs) are a class of interventions focused on supporting social communication. As social communication and emotion regulation skills emerge from similar developmental processes, NDBIs may be one approach for addressing dysregulation among autistic children. The present study sought to characterize change in dysregulation among one-hundred and eleven caregiver–child dyads completing Project ImPACT, a caregiver-mediated NDBI. Caregivers reported on child communication and social engagement using the Social Communication Checklist and emotion regulation using the Emotional Dysregulation Inventory-Young Child at the beginning and end of services. Clinicians reported on caregiver fidelity at each intervention session. Children showed reductions in emotional dysregulation throughout Project ImPACT, though reductions were specific to children who began the program with elevated dysregulation. Child social engagement at baseline and caregivers’ fidelity to specific strategies within Project ImPACT were associated with reductions in emotional dysregulation. Very few studies have tested interventions aimed at supporting emotion regulation among young autistic children. These findings demonstrate that NDBIs may support emotion regulation as well as social communication skills. Further incorporating support for emotion regulation in NDBI may address this critical gap without increasing service coordination for families. Full article

Background/Objectives: Although public health organizations encourage family walking, no studies have examined children’s physical activity and enjoyment during outdoor parent–child walks. This study addresses those gaps by examining children’s moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and enjoyment during outdoor walks with their parents, along with parental barriers and their relationship with parent’s self-efficacy and co-activity minutes. Methods: Fifty parent–child dyads (children aged 6–12 years) completed 10 min, self-paced outdoor walks while wearing waist-worn ActiGraph monitors. Parents reported perceived barriers to walking outdoors with their child and self-efficacy for supporting their child’s daily physical activity. Results: Children reported high enjoyment (mean = 5.1 on a six-point scale) and attained high physical activity intensity (71.3% of time in MVPA, 22.0% in vigorous activity, mean step count = 1200). Parents reported an average of 2.6 barriers (SD = 1.0) to walking outdoors with their child, with poor weather (70%) and lack of time (70%) reported most frequently. Each additional barrier was associated with a 1.3-point reduction in parents’ self-efficacy (p = 0.007). Two barriers (‘diverse interests between parent and child’ and ‘other parent-suggested barriers’) were significantly associated with fewer co-activity minutes per week (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study highlights the benefits of parent–child outdoor walking for promoting MVPA and enjoyment in children. Because perceived barriers may lower parents’ self-efficacy in supporting their child’s physical activity, addressing these barriers may be essential for the success of family-based interventions that encourage walking together outdoors. Background: Adolescents with a chronological age of less than 15 years or a gynecological age of less than 2 years may have a higher probability of complications because they are more likely to conceive within 1 to 2 years of menarche and, therefore, are still growing and maturing. This could impair their ability to adapt to the physiological demands of pregnancy. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between chronological age and gynecological age with low birth weight and small for gestational age among adolescent mothers in Mexico City. Methods: A retrospective cohort design of adolescent mother–child dyads was conducted. The study followed 1242 adolescents under 19 years of age and their children, collecting data on physical, socioeconomic, and clinical characteristics, including hemoglobin levels. Low birth weight was assessed using the Intergrowth-21st project standards and categorized as above or below 2500 g. The mothers were grouped by chronological age (<15 years and ≥15 years) and gynecological age (<3 years and ≥3 years). Adjusted odds ratios were calculated using binary logistic regression models. The outcome variables were low birth weight and small for gestational age. The independent variables included gynecological age, chronological age, age at menarche, hemoglobin concentration, and gestational weight gain, among others. All independent variables were converted to dummy variables for analysis. Calculations were adjusted for the following variables: marital status, maternal education, occupation, educational lag, family structure, socioeconomic level, pre-pregnancy body mass index, and initiation of prenatal care. Results: The average age of the participants was 15.7 ± 1 years. The frequency of small for gestational age and low birth weight was 20% and 15.3%, respectively. Factors associated with small for gestational age included gynecological age < 3 years [aOR = 2.462, CI 95%; 1.081–5.605 (p = 0.032)], hemoglobin < 11.5 g/dL [aOR = 2.164, CI 95%; 1.08–605 (p = 0.019)], insufficient gestational weight gain [aOR = 1.858, CI 95%; 1.059–3.260 (p = 0.031)], preterm birth [aOR = 1.689, CI 95%; 1.133–2.519 p = 0.01], and living more than 50 km from the care center [aOR = 2.256, CI 95%; 1.263–4.031 (p = 0.006)]. An early age of menarche [aOR = 0.367, CI 95%; 0.182–0.744 (p = 0.005)] showed a protective effect against small for gestational age. Factors associated with low birth weight included gynecological age < 3 years [aOR = 3.799, CI 95%; 1.458–9.725 (p = 0.006)], maternal age < 15 years [aOR = 5.740, CI 95%; 1.343–26.369 (p = 0.019)], preterm birth [aOR = 54.401, CI 95%; 33.887–87.335, p = 0.001], living more than 50 km from the care center [aOR = 1.930, CI 95%; 1.053–3.536 (p = 0.033)], and early age of menarche [aOR = 0.382, CI 95%; 0.173–0.841 (p = 0.017), which demonstrated a protective effect, respectively. Conclusions: The study concludes that biological immaturity, particularly early gynecological age, significantly contributes to adverse birth outcomes during adolescent pregnancies. Interestingly, early menarche appeared to have a protective effect, whereas chronological age was not a significant predictor of small for gestational age. Chronological age has an even greater impact: women younger than 15 years are 5.7 times more likely to have low birth weight infants. However, chronological age did not increase the likelihood of having an SGA newborn. Full article

Background: Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) occurs in approximately one in five children who undergo surgery. Youth with anxiety and depressive symptoms are at greater risk of developing CPSP. Psychological interventions hold promise to prevent CPSP; however, existing psychological interventions are often brief and offered exclusively pre-surgically. Objective: The Perioperative Pain Program (PPP) was designed to address psychological risk factors for CPSP. This study aimed to explore acceptability and satisfaction with the PPP, from the perspective of youth and caregivers. Method: In this mixed-methods study, 24 youth and caregivers completed a satisfaction questionnaire, and six dyads participated in semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative data was analyzed using inductive content analysis. Results: The qualitative analysis generated four categories: (1) developing support and a sense of preparedness for surgery; (2) connection matters between families and the team; (3) personal characteristics may impact intervention use; (4) the need for adaptable content and delivery. Quantitative data indicated overall satisfaction and acceptability of the intervention. Conclusions: Psychological interventions that facilitate interpersonal connections in a timely manner may be key to facilitating more meaningful engagement and help prevent CPSP in youth. Background/Objectives: Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS), particularly its aesthetic subcomponent (Aesthetic Sensitivity; AES), has been linked to individual differences in emotional processing. This study examined whether parental visual attention to emotional facial expressions predicts corresponding attentional patterns in their children, and whether this intergenerational concordance is mediated by child AES and moderated by child empathy. Methods: A sample of 124 Greek Cypriot parent–child dyads (children aged 7–12 years) participated in an eye-tracking experiment. Both parents and children viewed static emotional facial expressions (angry, sad, fearful, happy). Parents also completed questionnaires assessing their child’s SPS, empathy (cognitive and affective), and emotional functioning. Regression analyses and moderated mediation models were employed to explore associations between parental and child gaze patterns. Results: Children’s fixation on angry eyes was significantly predicted by parental fixation duration on the same region, as well as by child AES and empathy levels. Moderated mediation analyses revealed that the association between parent and child gaze to angry eyes was significantly mediated by child AES. However, neither cognitive nor affective empathy significantly moderated this mediation effect. Conclusions: Findings suggest that child AES plays a key mediating role in the intergenerational transmission of attentional biases to emotional stimuli. While empathy was independently associated with children’s gaze behavior, it did not moderate the AES-mediated pathway. These results highlight the importance of trait-level child sensitivity in shaping shared emotional attention patterns within families. Full article

Background/Objectives: Parental involvement is essential in managing type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in children, particularly with the growing use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). Validated tools assessing parental self-efficacy in this context remain limited. This study aimed to validate the Parental Self-Efficacy Scale for Diabetes Management (PSESDM) among parents of children using a CGM sensor and to examine its associations with diabetes outcomes and parental characteristics. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 106 parent–child dyads at a university pediatric diabetes center. Parents completed the Hungarian PSESDM. Data regarding children’s HbA1c level were recorded, along with standard measures of their general and diabetes-specific quality of life (EQ-5D-Y-3L, PedsQL Diab); data regarding parents’ health literacy (Chew), fear of hypoglycemia (HFS), health-related quality of life (EQ-5D-5L), and capability well-being (ICECAP-A) were also collected. The PSESDM’s reliability, internal consistency, and discriminant and criterion validity were assessed using standard statistical methods. Results: The PSESDM demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.857) and strong item–total correlations (range: 0.678–0.791). Higher parental self-efficacy was significantly associated with better glucose control (lower HbA1c, rs = −0.50) and weakly correlated with the child’s diabetes-specific quality of life (rs = 0.20). Among parental characteristics, self-efficacy correlated strongly with capability well-being (rs = 0.52), moderately with health literacy (rs = −0.30), and showed no difference between socio-demographic subgroups, except for the subgroup related to income. Conclusions: The PSESDM is a valid and reliable tool for measuring self-efficacy in parents of children with T1DM using CGM sensors. Its associations with children’s HbA1c levels, diabetes-specific quality of life, and parental characteristics support its clinical relevance and potential use in identifying families at risk for poorer diabetes outcomes. Background/Objectives: Lower-limb amputation profoundly affects individuals and their family caregivers, particularly during home transition after hospital discharge. Understanding the needs, challenges, and emotions during this period is essential for designing effective family centered empowerment interventions. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of amputees and their caregivers, identify their needs and challenges, and identify strategies to foster empowerment, resilience, and adaptation after amputation. Methods: This qualitative, descriptive-exploratory study involved semi-structured interviews with 37 dyads, each comprising an amputee who has undergone major dysvascular lower-limb amputation and their primary caregiver, who provided home care. The participants attended follow-up consultations post-amputation. Data were collected over a 13-month period and analyzed using qualitative content analysis based on Bardin’s methodology, with support from ATLAS.ti 23.3.4 software for coding and data organization. Results: Four categories emerged: (i) difficulties faced, including loss of autonomy, mobility challenges, architectural barriers, and emotional strain; (ii) home discharge, emphasizing functional training for amputees and caregivers and the need for community support; (iii) impact of amputation, highlighting acceptance difficulties, psychological distress, social isolation, and lifestyle changes; and (iv) empowerment strategies, focusing on psychological support, skills training, assistive devices, and coordinated care. Tailored interventions such as peer support, home adaptations, and multidisciplinary care are essential for resilience, independence, and improved quality of life. Conclusions: Family centered empowerment strategies are vital for improving the outcomes of amputees and caregivers. Interventions that prioritize caregiver education, psychological support, and enhanced accessibility promote resilience, autonomy, and quality of life. These findings highlight the need for integrated hospital-to-community programs. Full article

β-Lactamase/transpeptidase-like superfamily proteins are serine proteases that use the Ser–Lys catalytic dyad to carry out their biological functions. Here, we investigate the three known families of β-lactamase/transpeptidase-like superfamily proteins, β-lactamase/D-Ala carboxypeptidase, glutaminase, and Dac-like, and describe the structural catalytic cores that govern the catalytic residues in these proteins. We show that the structural catalytic core of these proteins is a combination of three zones, the mutual three-dimensional arrangement of which correspondingly determines their belonging to one of seven and twenty-four established groups and subgroups. Maternal Psychopathology and Family Functioning as Predictors of Externalizing Behavior in Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Study in Greece

Adolescent externalizing problems are commonly linked to maternal psychological distress and family functioning, but these associations remain underexplored in the Greek sociocultural context. This study examined how maternal symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress, along with adolescent-perceived family functioning, predict externalizing behaviors in Greek adolescents. A total of 563 adolescent–mother dyads (63.4% girls; M_age = 15.03 and SD = 0.83) participated. Mothers completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), and the Family Assessment Device (FAD–GF), while adolescents completed the Youth Self-Report (YSR) and FAD–GF. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that adolescent-perceived family functioning was the strongest predictor of externalizing behavior (β = 0.24 and p < 0.001), even after accounting for demographic and maternal mental health variables. The final model explained 18% of the variance in adolescent externalizing problems. Mediation analysis confirmed that family functioning partially mediated the relationship between maternal depression and adolescent externalizing problems, with a significant indirect effect (a × b = 0.088, Sobel z = 2.90, and p = 0.004). Gender differences were found for self-reported aggressive behavior (t = −2.40, p = 0.017, and d = 0.20), with girls scoring higher than boys. These findings highlight the indirect impact of maternal depression through family dynamics and underscore the importance of culturally sensitive, family-centered interventions to reduce adolescent externalizing problems. This research study was conducted to pilot an out-of-school family science program for fifth- and sixth-grade Latina girls and their parents. Program goals included encouraging parents in supporting their Latina daughters in science, increasing the girls’ interest in science and increasing the families’ participation in science experiences together. The 41 families participated in a 7-week Saturday program on either rocketry or gardening. Each week, the parent–daughter dyads engaged in hands-on Family Problem-Based Learning activities together and then the parents and daughters met separately in Conversation Groups. To measure the impact of the program, surveys were administered to the parents and daughters separately at four points: pre-, mid-, post- and delayed-post (three months after the program). Parents reported increases over time for several aspects of their support for their daughters in science and also increases in frequency of science experiences with their daughters. The daughters reported increases over time in their science identity and their discussions with their parents about jobs in science. In addition, the examination of video-recordings of a subset of the parent–daughter interactions during the activities revealed that parental and daughter behaviors evolved over the course of the program. Implications for engaging parents in science education are discussed. Full article

Objective: Parental responsibilities for childcare remain unequally distributed between mothers and fathers. This study investigates whether such gender disparity also applies to night-time care, particularly when children experience sleep disorders. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey study including 882 clinical files from sleep consultations for children aged 0 to 5 years, completed by one parent (98% mothers). To assess inter-rater reliability, 112 father–mother dyads outside the clinical setting were also surveyed. Additionally, 1409 mothers from the general population formed a control group. Results: In the clinical group, 60% of children were cared for exclusively by their mother at night, versus 9% by the father. In the control group, the figures were 64% and 6%, respectively. Gender disparities persisted even when both parents worked full-time or when the child was no longer breastfed. Inter-rater reliability was strong (r > 0.70). Factors such as number of night awakenings, child’s age, and maternal education influenced caregiving distribution. Greater maternal involvement was associated with increased psychological distress and lower relationship satisfaction. Conclusions: Mothers remain the primary caregivers at night, even in dual-earner families. This unequal distribution can affect maternal well-being and couple dynamics. Promoting paternal involvement may reduce maternal overload and improve child sleep outcomes. Full article

Lilies are one of the most popular ornamental flowers in the world. However, the abundant pollen produced in their anthers causes significant inconvenience for producers and consumers. Pollen abortion induced by molecular breeding techniques is one of the effective ways to solve this problem. In this study, the LoTDF1 gene, which is involved in regulating lily anther development, was identified and cloned from lily anthers based on transcriptome data. The open reading frame of LoTDF1 is 936 bp and encodes a protein with 311 amino acids. Multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that the LoTDF1 protein contained a conserved R2R3 domain, belonging to the MYB transcription factor family. Subcellular localization and transcriptional activation assays demonstrated that LoTDF1 localized to the nucleus and functioned as a transcription activator. The transcriptional activation domain was located within the last 195 amino acids (117–311a) of the C-terminus, and there may be more than one transcriptional activation domain in the region. The expression level of the LoTDF1 gene was highest during the pollen mother cell (PMC) stage of lily anther development (2 cm anther), followed by the tetrad stage (4 cm anther). In situ hybridization experiments further confirmed that LoTDF1 transcripts were predominantly localized in PMCs, tapetal cells, middle layer cells, dyads, and tetrads. The experiment data suggest that LoTDF1 plays a critical role in regulating early anther development in lily. LoTDF1 could be a promising candidate gene for molecular breeding strategies aimed at developing pollen-free lily cultivars to enhance commercial and consumer appeal. Full article

Improving children’s oral health is a national priority. Parental knowledge and self-efficacy influence children’s health behaviors; however, the relationship between parental oral health-related knowledge, self-efficacy, child oral health-related quality of life (OHQoL), and dental caries remains unclear, especially among low-income, ethnically diverse U.S. families. This study assesses the relationship between parental oral health-related knowledge, self-efficacy, child dental caries, and OHQoL. This cross-sectional seco ndary analysis uses baseline data from a school-based cluster-randomized controlled trial among children (kindergarten–second grade). Dental assessments were conducted using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) on site in schools at baseline (n = 34 schools, n = 1084 consenting parent–child dyads). Child OHQoL, parental knowledge, and self-efficacy were measured using validated self-report surveys. Associations between exposures and outcomes (child dental caries prevalence, child OHQoL) were evaluated by univariate and multivariable logistic and linear regressions, respectively. After adjusting for covariates, higher parental self-efficacy was associated with lower child OHQoL (lower score indicates higher quality of life) [beta = −0.16, 95% CI: −0.24, −0.09, p < 0.01] and lower odds of active dental caries [Adj OR: 0.95, 95% CI: 0.9, 0.99, p = 0.02]. No significant associations were noted for parental knowledge. These findings can inform future research, understanding how parental psychosocial factors influence dental caries prevention behaviors and risk, and inform interventions for children. Full article

Resiliency in Child–Caregiver Dyads and the Impact on Health Outcomes in Sickle Cell Disease

Background/Objectives: Resiliency is critical in coping with stressors associated with chronic health diseases. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a chronic blood disorder in which familial psychosocial functioning impacts disease outcomes. We hypothesized that caregiver perceived stress and resiliency are related to the resiliency of children with SCD and may influence SCD clinical outcomes. Methods: Child–caregiver dyads completed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), Connor Davidson-Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and used a 1–5 Likert scale to rate the frequency of stressors they experience, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: Of the 55 child participants, 36% reported a history of stroke, 7% a bone marrow transplant, and 25% frequent (≥3) emergency room visits within last year. Dyad median resiliency scores (68.5 vs. 75.8) and stress scores (16.1 vs. 15.3) were similar and consistent with population studies. Child resiliency was not associated with child (r = −0.21, p = 0.12) or caregiver (r = −0.16, p = 0.26) perceived stress. Caregiver and child resiliencies had a significant positive correlation (r = 0.38, p = 0.0046) but no relationship across dyads with perceived stress scores. Children with one to two hospitalizations within the last year had significantly lower median resiliency scores compared with those who had experienced no hospitalizations (median 65 vs. 76, p = 0.0386), but displayed no relationship with genotype, history of stroke, or stem cell transplant. During the COVID-19 pandemic, both groups rated “worry about my/my child’s sickle cell disease” as the most frequent psychosocial stressor. Conclusions: In a cross-sectional cohort study that explored the relationship between caregiver resiliency and child resiliency in SCD, we found that caregiver resiliency and child resiliency were strongly correlated, while child resiliency showed no significant association with perceived stress. Higher child resiliency scores were associated with fewer hospitalizations. The results indicate the need for interventions to increase both child and caregiver resiliency in SCD, as it may contribute to health outcomes in SCD. Further research is needed to explore cofounding factors influencing resiliency in children with SCD. Full article

Background: The development of children is shaped by a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors, yet the role of fathers remains underrepresented in research. This study contributes to addressing this gap by examining paternal involvement through the Parent–Child Relationship Scale (P-CRS), an observational tool previously validated for mother–child interactions. Methods: The sample included 204 father–child dyads, with children aged 6 months to 5 years (mean age: 43.3 months), encompassing both clinical and non-clinical groups. Experienced clinicians conducted in vivo observations across 4–5 sessions, scoring interactions along three dimensions: parent, child, and interaction. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) validated the P-CRS’s applicability to father–child relationships, confirming its psychometric robustness and alignment with the factors observed in mother–child dyads. Conclusions: These findings highlight the unique and complementary role of fathers in shaping developmental trajectories and underscore the importance of incorporating fathers in parenting interventions and assessments. Additionally, they demonstrate the P-CRS’s effectiveness in capturing the nuanced dynamics of early parent–child relationships. Future research should investigate longitudinal differences in parental roles and expand the P-CRS’s application to diverse family structures. Full article
