Leading agribusiness firms are pivotal to modernizing agricultural supply chains, yet evidence on how digital transformation translates into high-quality development remains fragmented. Using a 2024 sample of 30 Chinese national agribusiness leaders and the technology–organization–environment (TOE) framework, we integrate grey relational analysis with DEMATEL to quantify interdependencies among conditions, and combine fuzzy-set QCA with necessary condition analysis to identify both configurational pathways and binding constraints. The results of the analysis indicate that high-quality development rarely stems from a single driver; it emerges from complementary bundles linking digital technologies and R&D investment with organizational readiness (e.g., talent and governance) under supportive external conditions (e.g., policy incentives and market pressure). The findings provide a configurational explanation of digital upgrading in agribusiness and inform differentiated digital strategies for managers and policymakers. Full article

A living organism can be regarded as a dissipative, self-organizing physical system operating far from thermodynamic equilibrium. Such systems can be effectively described within the framework of Markov jump processes subjected to an external driving force that sustains the system away from equilibrium—leading, in the special case of stabilization, to a non-equilibrium steady state (NESS). By combining the Markov formalism with concepts from stochastic thermodynamics, we demonstrate the temporal evolution of entropy in such systems: entropy decreases during growth and development, stabilizes at maturity under NESS conditions, and subsequently increases during aging, death, and decomposition. This characteristic trajectory, which we term the entropy bathtub, highlights the universal thermodynamic structure of living systems. We further show that the system exhibits continuous yet time-dependent positive entropy production, in accordance with fundamental thermodynamic principles. Perturbations of the driving force—whether reversible or irreversible—naturally capture the impact of external stressors, providing a conceptual analogy to pathological processes in biological organisms. Although the model does not introduce fundamentally new elements to the physics of life, it offers a simple tool for exploring entropy-driven mechanisms in living matter. Full article

This study evaluated the fruit quality of 12 apple cultivars grafted onto the cold-resistant dwarfing interstock SH40 in the arid region of Lingwu, Ningxia, to identify well-adapted varieties for local production. A total of 21 indicators were measured, encompassing three major aspects: external quality (e.g., fruit size, shape index, peel color), internal flavor (e.g., soluble solids, soluble sugars, titratable acids, vitamin C content), and textural attributes (e.g., hardness, crispness, chewiness), and data were analyzed using principal component analysis and membership function methodology. The cultivars exhibited distinct quality profiles under identical management: ‘Red General’ performed well in fruit size, weight, and sugar–acid balance; ‘Yanfu 6’ showed the highest firmness and crispness; ‘Shengli’ had the greatest soluble solids content; and ‘Granny Smith’ was richest in vitamin C. Four principal components were extracted, explaining 80.06% of the total variance and simplifying the quality evaluation system. Based on the comprehensive membership function scores, ‘Red General’, ‘White Winter Pearmain’, and ‘Huashuo’ ranked highest in overall fruit quality. In conclusion, these three cultivars perform excellently on SH40 and are recommended for promotion, whereas ‘Red Delicious’ is not recommended due to poor performance. These findings offer a practical reference for selecting apple cultivars paired with SH40 in similar arid regions. Full article

To enhance PharmD student leadership and advocacy skills, combat the paucity of trained pre-health advisors for pharmacy admissions, augment community relationships, and increase pharmacy admissions volume, we designed, implemented, and assessed PAALS, a Pre-health Academic Advising and Leadership System. PAALS was grounded in Astin’s Theory of Student Involvement and evaluated using the RE-AIM implementation science framework. RE-AIM measured outcomes across Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance as indicators of PAALS’s scale, fidelity, sustainability, and institutional embedding. Analysis of PAALS using the RE-AIM framework demonstrated the following outcomes: (1) Reach: 42 P1-P3 PharmD students participated as mentors; external partnerships expanded from 2 to 8 regional high schools and community programs; and more than 25 mentored learners successfully matriculated into the PharmD program. (2) Effectiveness: students enacted sustained leadership, advocacy, and mentoring roles. (3) Adoption: voluntary uptake of mentoring and governance roles by PharmD students occurred with repeated engagement by external partner institutions. (4) Implementation: Core program components were delivered consistently using existing institutional resources. (5) Maintenance: PAALS remained operational across five academic years despite student turnover, with leadership succession and institutional embedding sustained across cohorts. Our findings demonstrate that student-led advising and advocacy ecosystems address critical gaps in pharmacy-specific pre-health advising models. Full article

Predictive modeling of extrusion processes through machine learning (ML) offers significant improvements over classical response surface methodology (RSM) when addressing nonlinear and multivariable systems. This study evaluated hemp residues (Cannabis sativa) as a non-conventional ingredient in ruminant diets and compared the performance of polynomial regression models against several ML algorithms, including artificial neural networks (ANNs), random forest (RF), K-Nearest neighbors (KNN), and XGBoost. Three experimental datasets from previous extrusion studies were concatenated with new laboratory experiments, creating a unified database in excel. Input variables included extrusion parameters (temperature, screw speed, and moisture) and formulation components, while output variables comprised expansion index, BD, penetration force, water absorption index and water solubility index. Data preprocessing involved robust z-score detection of outliers (MAD criterion) with intra-group winsorization, followed by normalization to a [−1, +1] range. Hyperparameter optimization of ANN models was performed with Optuna, and all algorithms were evaluated through 5-fold cross-validation and independent external validation sets. Results demonstrated that ML models consistently outperformed quadratic regression, with ANNs achieving R2 > 0.80 for BD and water solubility index, and RF excelling in predicting solubility. These findings establish machine learning as a robust predictive framework for extrusion processes and highlight hemp residues as a sustainable feed ingredient with potential to improve ruminant nutrition and reduce environmental impacts. Background: The rising costs in the metropolitan real estate market are compelling individuals to relocate outside of the city. The anticipated financial savings, however, may be undermined by long and costly commutes; raising the question of whether this trade-off is a worthwhile proposition. This paper uses a digital model of workplace commutes, income levels and house prices in England as well as Wales, to evaluate the trade-off between (i) moving to the city centre and cycling to work versus (ii) continuing to commute by car from a residence on the periphery. Methods: An indicator has been introduced that unifies the transport and housing affordability by expanding the concept of the ‘effective speed’ to include housing costs. The effective speed itself is commonly defined as the travel distance divided by the time dedicated to the transport activity (i.e., travel duration and time given to earn the money to pay for the costs incurred). Results: If only the associated fuel and mortgage costs are considered, residing on the periphery can—for those already living there—be a cost-effective option specially in cities like Cambridge and Oxford. Yet, accounting for the total ownership costs of cars or external effects, this advantage shifts in favour of relocating to the city centre. Conclusion: This study does not negate the existence of an affordable housing crisis in urban environments, though it demonstrates that strategies to cut transport emissions can produce economic gains. Global warming threatens sustainable human development, and carbon emission rights trading (CERT) has emerged as a key market-based tool for reducing emissions. Yet evidence on how CERT affects corporate green innovation—especially high-quality, substantive innovation—remains mixed and fragmented. Using unbalanced panel data on Chinese A-share listed firms from 2007 to 2016 and applying fixed-effect, DID, and PSM-DID models, this study examines the impact of China’s CERT pilot policy on quota-managed firms’ green innovation. The results show that the policy primarily stimulates substantive green innovation, reflected in green invention patents, with limited influence on strategic, low-novelty patents. Its effects are stronger for firms in central and western pilot regions, in non-high-tech industries, and at more mature stages of development, and differ between firms that anticipated regulation and those brought under quota management unexpectedly. Overall, the findings indicate that a well-designed carbon trading mechanism can reallocate resources to incentivize high-quality green innovation, offering micro-level support for Coasian market-based approaches to environmental externalities and informing the further development of China’s national carbon market. Background: Hip joint disorders exhibit diverse and overlapping radiological features, complicating early diagnosis and limiting the diagnostic value of single-modality imaging. Isolated imaging or clinical data may therefore inadequately represent disease-specific pathological characteristics. Methods: This retrospective study included 605 hip joints from Center A (2018–2024), comprising normal hips, osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). An independent cohort of 24 hips from Center B (2024–2025) was used for external validation. A multimodal deep learning framework was developed to jointly analyze radiographs, CT volumes, and clinical texts. Features were extracted using ResNet50, 3D-ResNet50, and a pretrained BERT model, followed by attention-based fusion for four-class classification. Results: The combined Clinical+X-ray+CT model achieved an AUC of 0.949 on the internal test set, outperforming all single-modality models. Improvements were consistently observed in accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and decision curve analysis. Grad-CAM visualizations confirmed that the model attended to clinically relevant anatomical regions. Conclusions: Attention-based multimodal feature fusion substantially improves diagnostic performance for hip joint diseases, providing an interpretable and clinically applicable framework for early detection and precise classification in orthopedic imaging. Background/Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify anatomical and systemic predictors of early (≤2 months) response to subthreshold micropulse laser (SMPL) in center-involving diabetic macular edema (DME) using automated AI-based OCT biomarker quantification. Methods: Retrospective observational study of 65 eyes. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) volumes were analyzed with a CE-marked software (Ophthal v1.0; Mr. Doc s.r.l., Rome, Italy) to quantify intraretinal fluid (IRF) and subretinal fluid (SRF) volumes and outer retinal integrity (external limiting membrane, ELM; ellipsoid zone, EZ). SMPL (577 nm; 5% duty cycle; 200 ms; 150 µm; 250 mW) was applied in a high-density macular grid, sparing the foveal avascular zone. The primary endpoint was absolute and percentage change in IRF volume from baseline to follow-up; predictors of %IRF reduction were assessed by multivariable linear regression. Results: At 52 days (IQR 41–60), best-corrected visual acuity improved from 0.22 to 0.15 logMAR (p < 0.001). IRF volume decreased (median −0.045 mm3; p = 0.034) despite stable central subfield thickness. All eyes with baseline SRF (n = 5; median 0.026 mm3 [0.020–0.046]) achieved complete SRF resolution. Treatment-naïve eyes had greater %IRF reduction than pretreated eyes (59.6% vs. 11.5%; p = 0.029). High responders showed shorter diabetes duration than low responders (14.5 vs. 17 years; p = 0.025); however, treatment-naïve status was the strongest independent predictor of %IRF reduction (p = 0.028). Conclusions: AI-derived fluid volumetrics capture early SMPL response despite unchanged thickness. Treatment-naïve status and shorter diabetes duration may define a metabolic window for optimal early response in DME. Full article

The digestive gland of Venus flytrap consists of various types of specialized cells. Secretory cells form two layers: the first is a more external outer layer and the second is an internal layer that is connected to stalk cells. Our goal was to check whether the position/location of cells is essential in terms of cell wall composition (whether cell wall microdomains exist). We also focused on the structure of cell wall ingrowths in secretory cells. To achieve this, the localization of the cell wall components in the cell walls of gland cells was performed using the immunolabeling technique and confocal microscopy. It has been found that cells within the gland head are not equal. Their location determines the composition of their cell walls in terms of the presence of various epitopes. The cell walls of the secretory cells in the outer layer were deficient in epitopes recognized by antibodies, including JIM5 (low methylesterified homogalacturonans), CCRC-M38 (low methylesterified homogalacturonans), LM5 (galactan), and CCRC-M48 (xyloglucan), which contrasted with the cell walls of the cells in the inner layer. In terms of the occurrence of pectic homogalacturonans, cell wall ingrowths constitute cell wall microdomains. The digestive glands of Dionaea muscipula exhibit pronounced cell wall microdomain organization, with distinct distributions of pectins, hemicelluloses, and arabinogalactan proteins across different glandular layers. These compositional differences reflect functional specialization in secretion, absorption, and structural support. Full article

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This increases the demand for real-world evidence to complement findings from randomized controlled trials. The German IQVIA Disease Analyzer (DA) database, which is populated with anonymized electronic medical records from general practitioners and specialists, has become an increasingly valuable source for cardiovascular research. Over the past two decades, and especially between 2020 and 2025, numerous epidemiological studies have used this database to explore associations between cardiovascular risk factors, comorbidities, therapeutic patterns, and cardiovascular outcomes in large, broadly representative outpatient populations. This review synthesizes evidence from 13 selected DA-based studies examining atrial fibrillation, heart failure, cardiometabolic disease, lipid management, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)–related cardiovascular risks, cerebrovascular complications, COVID-19-associated vascular events, and modifiable behavioral and anthropometric factors. These studies were selected based on predefined criteria including cardiovascular relevance, methodological rigor, large sample size, and representativeness of key disease domains across the 2000–2025 period. Eligible studies were identified through targeted searches of peer-reviewed literature using the German IQVIA Disease Analyzer database and were selected to reflect major cardiovascular disease domains, risk factors, and therapeutic areas. Across disease domains, the reviewed studies consistently demonstrate the DA database’s capacity to identify reproducible associations between cardiometabolic risk factors, comorbidities, and cardiovascular outcomes in routine outpatient care. While causal inference is not possible, the database enables the identification of clinically meaningful associations that inform hypothesis generation, help quantify disease burden, and highlight gaps in prevention or treatment. The database’s strengths include large sample sizes (often exceeding 100,000 patients), long follow-up periods, and high external validity, while limitations relate to coding accuracy, residual confounding, and the absence of detailed clinical measures. Collectively, the evidence underscores the importance of the DA database as a crucial platform for real-world cardiovascular research. Full article

Coastal port cities depend on global seafood flows, yet their food security is increasingly exposed to price volatility and supply disruptions. This study examines Busan citizens’ perceptions of seafood-related food security and seafood supply chain stability, and derives actionable municipal policy priorities for a trade-dependent port city. Anchored in the FAO four-dimensional framework—availability, access, utilization, and stability—we developed 20 seafood-related attributes and surveyed adult residents in Busan (n = 297). The measurement structure was assessed through reliability checks and exploratory factor analysis, and Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA) was used to map attribute-level priorities and identify the largest importance–performance gaps. Overall, respondents regard seafood food security as highly important but only moderately satisfactory. Availability and utilization perform relatively well, indicating perceived strengths in basic supply conditions and safe consumption, whereas access and stability show lower performance relative to importance, reflecting concerns about affordability, uneven physical access for vulnerable groups, price volatility, and exposure to external shocks. Notably, several stability-related attributes emerge as “Concentrate Here” priorities, highlighting the need for strengthened risk management, early warning communication, and resilience-oriented logistics planning at the city level. By integrating the FAO framework with attribute-level IPA, this study demonstrates how citizen perception data can translate macro food security debates into locally implementable priorities for building sustainable food systems in coastal cities. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory skin disease with critical unmet therapeutic needs. This study compared the efficacy of three probiotics—Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis J12 (B. animalis J12), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Zhang-LL (L. plantarum Zhang-LL), and Limosilactobacillus salivarius M18-6 (L. salivarius M18-6)—in a 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB)-induced mouse AD model. Interventions included topical fermented supernatants (J12S/Z-LL-S/M18-6-S), oral live cells (J12L/Z-LL-L/M18-6-L), and topical dexamethasone (Dex) as the positive control. Post-intervention, AD-related pathological and immunological indices were evaluated. Among the three probiotics, J12 exhibited superior efficacy, whereas L. plantarum Zhang-LL and L. salivarius M18-6 showed limited therapeutic effects. Both J12-derived formulations alleviated DNFB-induced AD symptoms: Topical J12S significantly reduced ear swelling, serum IL-4 and IL-17 levels, and increased the proportion of splenic Treg cells. Oral J12L exerted comparable immunomodulatory effects, while further improving skin pathology—epidermal thickness and mast cell infiltration were each reduced to approximately one-third of those in the model group. Additionally, J12L regulated gut microbiota by enhancing alpha diversity and altering functional predictions. Collectively, B. animalis J12 is a promising candidate for AD management: topical J12S serves as an effective, non-invasive alternative to oral J12L. Notably, the two formulations act through distinct yet complementary mechanisms—J12L exerts systemic effects via regulating immunity and the gut–skin axis, while J12S exerts local anti-inflammatory effects and protects the skin barrier—highlighting J12′s versatile therapeutic potential for AD. Structural failure of the lead-carbon battery casing under external loads poses a serious threat to the safety of its energy storage function. To overcome the limitations of traditional protective casings regarding specific energy absorption (SEA) and crush force efficiency (CFE), this study proposes a novel thin-walled protective structure utilizing graded aperture honeycomb sandwich panels fabricated via additive manufacturing (AM). Finite element (FE) models were established using HyperMesh and validated against experimental data. Subsequently, the impact resistance and energy absorption characteristics of four distinct cellular topologies were systematically investigated under varying pore-size gradients, impact directions, and velocities. Experimental and numerical simulation results indicate that, among the investigated configurations, the triangular honeycomb structure exhibits superior impact resistance and energy absorption capability under both axial and lateral loading conditions. Furthermore, the synergistic enhancement mechanism based on topological configuration and gradient design effectively optimizes the progressive crushing mode, thereby reducing the initial peak crushing force transmitted to the battery and resulting in a pronounced advantage in impact performance. This research provides a novel design approach for optimizing next-generation high-performance, lightweight protection systems for energy storage devices. Full article

Background/Objectives: Self-collection devices are more widely used than ever for detecting sexually transmitted infections and cervical cancer. Despite this, we still lack a clear understanding of how well these tools actually collect and release the necessary molecular samples. This study compared the in vitro uptake and release performance of commonly used self-sampling devices for total proteins, nucleic acids, and episomal human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) DNA. Methods: An artificial cervicovaginal fluid composed of phosphate-buffered saline supplemented with serum and nucleic acid extracts was serially diluted 2-fold. Each dilution was applied for 5 min to the external surfaces of a vaginal veil (Vaginal Veil Collector V-Veil UP2TM device), a flocked swab (FLOQSwabs®), and a commercial vaginal tampon. Non-woven surgical tissue and plastic film served as controls. Total proteins and nucleic acids were quantified by spectrophotometry, and HPV-16 DNA by real-time quantitative PCR. Results: Recovery rates for proteins and nucleic acids were highest for the vaginal veil (81% and 91%), followed by the swab (66% and 70%) and non-woven tissue (44% and 47%). In contrast, the tampon and plastic film performed poorly, releasing less than 30% of proteins and negligible amounts of nucleic acids. Episomal HPV-16 DNA release was highest for the veil (89%), compared with the swab (57%), non-woven tissue (37%), tampon (4%), and plastic film (2%). Conclusions: The vaginal veil demonstrated superior uptake and release of proteins, nucleic acids, and HPV-16 DNA at physiological concentrations. Its non-absorbent structure allows high saturation with efficient release of genital components, including microbial genomes, whereas vaginal tampons retained these components, limiting analytical recovery.
