Service-learning has emerged as a promising pedagogical approach to address social challenges while fostering students’ academic, socioemotional, and civic development. Despite the growing body of literature, there is a lack of systematic reviews evaluating its effectiveness in secondary education beyond the United States. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to synthesize the available empirical research on service-learning interventions implemented with secondary education students (grades 7–10) outside United States. Following The Campbell Collaboration guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across Web of Science and ProQuest, supplemented by other resources (general web search, hand searches, ongoing research, open access and relevant institutions and networks). Inclusion criteria required quantitative empirical studies (randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental designs, or pretest–posttest designs) published from 2008 to June 2025 that measured academic, cognitive, socio-emotional, civic, and community outcomes using quantitative procedures. After screening, 10 studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings indicate that service-learning programs can generate positive outcomes on academic performance and non-cognitive skills. Nevertheless, methodological weaknesses and heterogeneity across studies prevent drawing robust conclusions. The review highlights the need for more rigorous research to strengthen the evidence base for service-learning among adolescents in systems worldwide. Full article

Intergenerational trauma significantly affects the health and mental health of African American families, particularly women whose lives are shaped by systemic inequities and historical oppression. This scoping review examines how trauma and resilience are transmitted across generations in African American communities, with a focus on dyads such as mother–child and mother–daughter relationships and a conceptual grandmother–mother–daughter triad. The review aims to identify mechanisms of trauma transmission and resilience and to inform culturally responsive, multigenerational interventions. Peer-reviewed studies published between 2012 and 2025 were identified that included African American caregivers and children and addressed biological, psychological, social, cultural, and resilience dimensions of intergenerational processes. Data were synthesized using a dimensional conceptual analysis approach. Findings indicate that intergenerational trauma is perpetuated through chronic stress and discrimination, maternal mental health challenges, family structure and caregiving strain, and cultural narratives about strength and self-reliance. At the same time, resilience is transmitted through sensitive caregiving, spirituality and faith, social and kin support, racial socialization, and economic survival strategies that draw on cultural and historical knowledge. These results underscore the importance of addressing intergenerational trauma holistically by integrating dyadic evidence within a broader conceptual triadic framework. Culturally responsive, multigenerational interventions that leverage family and community strengths and make space for emotional vulnerability are essential for interrupting cycles of trauma and fostering healing within African American families. Background/Objectives: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social, communication, and behavioral challenges. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is widely used by parents worldwide, yet research exploring parents’ experiences, particularly in Arab countries, is limited. This study explored mothers’ perceptions and experiences of CAM use for children with ASD, information-seeking behaviors and challenges encountered. Methods: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was conducted among twenty mothers at Autism Academy of Jordan in 2024. Inclusion criteria were mothers with children diagnosed with ASD for at least six months and those who had used at least one CAM therapy. Interviews were conducted via Skype, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using NVivo 12 with inductive thematic analysis. Results: Three major themes emerged in this qualitative study: (1) mothers’ experiences with CAM and perceptions of benefit; (2) sources of information and decision-making processes; and (3) main challenges in selecting and implementing CAM. Mothers reported using therapies such as honey, black seed, camel milk, Hujama, olive oil, supplements, and region-specific programs like Andalosiah. Faith, cultural beliefs, and the desire for natural, safe interventions strongly influenced CAM selection. Internet searches and social media groups were primary information sources. Challenges included financial, logistical, emotional burdens, and lack of trustworthy, Arabic-language information sources. Conclusions: Mothers in Arab countries navigate CAM use for their children with ASD through culturally and religiously informed practices. Interventions should focus on developing evidence-based guidance, culturally sensitive counseling, and accessible information to support families in safe, informed CAM use. Full article

Enhancing Quality of Life in Ostomized Patients Through Smart-Glasses-Supported Health Education: A Pre-Post Study

Background: Ostomy care consultations are essential for promoting patient autonomy and quality-of-life. The integration of innovative technologies may enhance health education and support effective self-care among ostomized patients. Objective: To evaluate the impact of a nursing-led health education intervention supported by smart-glasses on the quality of life of ostomized patients. Methods: A pre–post quasi-experimental design was employed with 14 patients who had undergone digestive surgery resulting in an ostomy. The intervention consisted of a single 60-min session comprising three phases: (1) assessment of baseline knowledge on ostomy management, (2) personalized feedback, and (3) a hands-on workshop using Vuzix© smart-glasses to demonstrate ostomy care techniques. Quality of life was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire before and after the intervention. Results: The intervention significantly improved overall SF-36 scores, with notable advancements in emotional role (78.57 ± 36.06 to 97.44 ± 9.25, d = 10.54), mental health (79.14 ± 20.10 to 87.38 ± 13.94, d = 6.27), and vitality (69.29 ± 20.56 to 71.15 ± 16.98, d = 4.19). Social function remained high throughout the study, while bodily pain showed a slight decline. A strong correlation (ρ = 0.923, p = 0.001) was observed between pre- and post-intervention quality of life scores. Conclusions: The findings suggest that integrating smart-glasses into nursing-led health education may enhance the quality of life and self-care capabilities of ostomized patients. However, the small sample size, lack of a control group, and exploratory nature of the study limit the generalizability of the results. Further research is needed to validate these findings in larger, controlled trials. Full article

Background/Objectives: Parental mental health challenges are associated with parenting difficulties and child mental health issues. Parenting interventions can support families; however, parents with mental health challenges face barriers to accessing parenting support, which is not consistently offered within adult mental health settings. Embedding technology-assisted parenting programs into these settings could provide accessible, holistic support. Partners in Parenting Kids (PiP Kids) is a digital parenting program designed to prevent child anxiety and depression, yet its suitability for parents with mental health challenges and fit within mental health services remains unclear. This study aimed to co-design and adapt PiP Kids for future implementation in an Australian adult mental health service. Methods: Parents who recently sought mental health support (n = 8) and service providers (n = 7) participated in co-design workshops to explore needs and preferences for a technology-assisted parenting program and iteratively develop a prototype. Parents (n = 3) trialled the online component of the prototype and participated in qualitative interviews to assess acceptability. Results: The adapted clinician-supported program was designed to facilitate (1) parent and clinician readiness for parenting support; (2) emotional and social support for parents and clinicians; (3) practical, personalised parenting knowledge; (4) parent-led empowerment; and (5) accessible, integrated support. Prototype clinician training was developed to strengthen the clinician-support component. Parents indicated initial acceptability of the online prototype while reiterating the value of including face-to-face support. Conclusions: This study co-designed an online, clinician-supported parenting program for future embedding within adult mental health settings. The findings highlight key considerations for developing and implementing technology-assisted interventions that promote family-focused care for parents seeking mental health support. Full article

Background: Parents caring for preterm infants during hospital admission have unique needs. How these are addressed plays an important role in parents’ ability to cope with caregiving responsibilities. Educational programmes have proven beneficial to parents during their infant’s stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), for both parental and neonatal outcomes. Key components of parenting education during the NICU stay have been described; however, less is known about our understanding of parents’ educational needs, specifically in the South African context. Objectives: To explore parental needs and perceptions regarding a parenting education intervention provided to them while in the NICU, with a focus on programme content, structure, and mode of delivery. Methods: Three focus group discussions were conducted with mothers of preterm infants admitted to the NICU of a referral hospital in the North West province, South Africa. Inclusion criteria comprised parents of infants born in the hospital, singletons or multiples, with a gestational age below 37 weeks, and expected to stay in the NICU for at least 7 days. Discussions centred on mothers’ perceived needs regarding parenting education based on their experiences during their baby’s NICU admission. Results: Twenty-five mothers of singletons or multiples born before 37 weeks of gestation participated in the study. Three main themes were identified: (1) preference for content topics to include basic infant care, infant health and behaviours, and post-discharge related information; (2) education programme structure, which included instructional approaches and training logistics; and (3) support needs, including intrapersonal motivators, communication, and psychosocial and physical support. Conclusions: Participants recognised educational content needs that align with existing literature. However, they also emphasised the importance of addressing basic physical and emotional needs while receiving educational content, ensuring that parents feel empowered and capable of engaging with the information. Early detection of suicidal risk in adolescents requires valid tools adapted to the clinical and educational context. However, there are currently no observational scales developed specifically for use by significant people in the adolescent’s environment. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to design, validate and apply to a pilot sample an observational scale to identify behavioural and emotional signs of suicidal risk in adolescents, from the perspective of adolescents, parents and teachers. Validation study of an Observational Adolescent Suicide Risk Scale (EORSA) based on a theoretical review and expert consensus. Content validity was evaluated through expert judgement by professionals with recognised experience in mental health, psychometrics, and suicide prevention. The scale was subsequently applied to a sample of adolescents, parents and teachers, analysing the mean scores per item in each group. The final scale included 19 items with a high level of agreement among experts (content validity index > 0.80). When applied to the pilot sample, significant differences were observed in the items considered most frequent by each group. The EORSA is a valid and potentially useful tool for identifying signs of suicidal risk in adolescents from an observational perspective. Its design and application allow for a contextualised and multidimensional assessment, favouring preventive interventions adapted to each setting. Full article

Background/Objectives: The present exploratory study evaluates the feasibility and psychological effects of a structured Qigong intervention implemented in an Italian university setting. Qigong is a traditional Chinese mind–body practice combining gentle movements, breathwork, and mindful attention, aimed at enhancing mind–body integration and interoceptive awareness. Methods: A total of 332 undergraduate students voluntarily enrolled in a 12-week Qigong program. The intervention was based on Neidan Qigong and integrated both static and dynamic exercises. Psychological functioning was assessed through several self-report measures evaluating a range of constructs, including mindfulness (FFMQ), interoceptive ability (MAIA), perceived stress (PSS), depression, anxiety, and stress (BDI; DASS-21; STAI Y), emotion regulation (DERS), alexithymia (TAS), and sleep quality (PSQI). Results: A total of 114 students completed the intervention. The protocol was well received by participants and demonstrated high feasibility in the academic context, with good attendance rates and overall engagement. Preliminary findings indicate consistent improvements across several psychological domains. Conclusions: The results suggest that Qigong may be associated with improvements in mental health and well-being in young adults and may represent a promising, low-cost intervention. The findings should be interpreted as preliminary. Further research using controlled and methodologically rigorous designs is needed to assess the stability of these effects over time, incorporate physiological measures, and clarify the specific therapeutic contribution of spontaneous movement within Qigong practice. Background/Objectives: Multidisciplinary hybrid educational programs combined with continuous glucose monitoring may contribute to improved self-management in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM); however, real-world evidence remains limited. This study assessed the effects of an educational intervention integrated with continuous glucose monitoring on glycemic control and patient-reported outcomes in adults with T1DM. Methods: We conducted a single-group quasi-experimental study including 210 adults with T1DM from a public hospital. The nurse-led hybrid intervention consisted of a 2-h in-person group educational session followed by an individual telematic follow-up session. All participants used continuous glucose monitoring. The primary outcome was the change in HbA1c at 9 months. Secondary outcomes included continuous glucose monitoring metrics, diabetes-related quality of life, treatment satisfaction, and hypoglycemia awareness. Results: HbA1c showed a statistically significant but modest reduction from 7.70 ± 1.10% to 7.45 ± 0.91% following the intervention (p = 0.003). No statistically significant changes were observed in continuous glucose monitoring metrics, including time in range, time below and above range, mean glucose, glycemic variability, or sensor wear time. In terms of emotional well-being, treatment satisfaction increased significantly (8.17 ± 7.86 vs. 12.73 ± 5.49; p < 0.001), and the Clarke score showed a statistically significant but modest decrease (2.49 ± 1.90 vs. 2.12 ± 1.88; p = 0.017). Although the overall quality of life score did not change significantly, statistically significant differences were observed in several subscales, including satisfaction, impact, and diabetes-related concern. Conclusions: A multidisciplinary hybrid educational intervention integrated with continuous glucose monitoring was associated with modest improvements in HbA1c and statistically significant, though limited, enhancements in quality of life, treatment satisfaction, and hypoglycemia awareness in adults with T1DM. These findings suggest that similar educational models may have a supportive role in routine care. Full article

Backgrounds/Objectives: Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programs may have applications for adults with cerebral palsy (CP), particularly as this population is at increased risk of mental health challenges relative to the general population. However, little is known about the experiences of adults with CP participating in these programs. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of adults with CP, and a facilitator, who participated in a 9-week MBSR telehealth program. Methods: Adults who attended an MBSR telehealth program were invited to participate in focus groups. If a participant was unable to attend a focus group, they were offered a semi-structured interview. The facilitator participated in a semi-structured interview. Focus groups and interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and inductively thematically analyzed using Framework Analysis. Results: Ten adults with CP and one facilitator participated. Feedback on the program spanned across three themes: (i) learning and creating my mindfulness toolbox; (ii) applying mindfulness to everyday life; and (iii) online together with expert facilitation. Participants appreciated having access to a variety of mindfulness techniques to accommodate individual preferences. Peer-learning in a facilitated, online group context was also valued. Participants recalled implementing mindfulness strategies in everyday life and provided recommendations of how to improve the program. These included incorporating a group orientation, shortening group sessions to reduce fatigue, and follow-up sessions to maintain mindfulness skills after program completion. Conclusions: This study provides new knowledge about the perspectives of adults with CP regarding MBSR delivered via telehealth. Participant recommendations should inform future implementation of group mindfulness telehealth programs for adults with CP. Full article

Background/Objectives: Within Paediatric Palliative Care (PPC), motherhood in the context of severe cognitive impairment is shaped by unique emotional, relational, and identity-related challenges. Traditional understandings of maternal identity are strained when verbal communication and typical developmental milestones are absent. Although caregiving in PPC has been widely studied, the subjective and symbolic dimensions of motherhood in this setting have received far less attention. This study sought to explore how mothers construct, interpret, and make sense of their maternal identity while caring for a child with severe cognitive impairment in a PPC context, and to underscore the clinical relevance of these identity-related processes. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted involving nine mothers of children receiving paediatric palliative care services at a regional centre in Italy. Participants engaged in three online focus groups, totalling 270 min. Reflexive thematic analysis was employed to interpret the transcribed data, using ATLAS.ti software, version 25.0.1 ATLAS.ti Scientific Software Development GmbH, Berlin, Germany, for support. Member reflections were incorporated to validate the findings. Results: Three interconnected themes emerged from the reflexive thematic analysis. First, mothers described the development of a fusion-like, enmeshed mother–child relationship, characterised by embodied attunement, specialised interpretive expertise, and lifelong care dependency. Second, mothers detailed the construction of their maternal role, shaped by emotional labour, identity negotiation, sacrifice, loneliness, and peer support, alongside the construction of the child’s role, in which children were perceived as unique, symbolically meaningful beings whose social presence and limited reciprocity shaped maternal identity. Third, mothers articulated a search for meaning that sustained them throughout the caregiving journey, reframing their experience within a broader existential and relational perspective. Conclusions: Maternal caregiving in PPC encompasses distinct emotional, relational, and symbolic dimensions that extend beyond conventional understandings of motherhood. Grasping these identity-related dynamics has direct clinical relevance: it enables more attuned communication, strengthens the therapeutic alliance, and supports personalised, meaning-oriented care. These insights highlight the need for tailored interventions and further qualitative research to inform health care professionals and interdisciplinary practice. Full article

The rapid expansion of mindfulness research has generated both enthusiasm and controversy regarding its actual clinical value. While meditation is often regarded as the central mechanism of mindfulness-based interventions, other components such as psychoeducation and informal practice may play an equally significant role in improving mental health outcomes. This critical review examines the relative contributions of these elements to the therapeutic impact of mindfulness and clarifies the extent to which its effects are comparable to established treatments, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Evidence from meta-analyses and high-quality trials indicates that mindfulness programs achieve moderate efficacy in reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress, but effect sizes are frequently inflated by methodological limitations. Importantly, cognitive and emotional regulation skills, especially acceptance and non-judgment, appear to sustain long-term benefits more consistently than meditation alone. These findings highlight the need for rigorous longitudinal studies and component-focused designs to identify the mechanisms that drive clinical change. By distinguishing between evidence-based applications and overstated claims, this review contributes to a more balanced understanding of mindfulness and its appropriate integration into healthcare. Informal learning in institutional settings plays a vital role in lifelong education by fostering self-directed knowledge acquisition. With the increasing integration of digital media into these environments, augmented reality (AR) has emerged as a particularly promising technology due to its ability to overlay virtual content in real-time and across multiple sensory modalities. This systematic literature review investigates the use of AR in institutional informal learning places (IILPs) from 2018 to 2025, aiming to synthesize findings across the following overall research questions: (1) In which IILP contexts has AR been implemented, and what are the characteristics of the technology? (2) What learning-relevant functions and (3) outcomes are associated with AR in these settings? (4) Which learning theories underpin the design of AR interventions? Following the PRISMA guidelines, empirical studies were identified through comprehensive database searches (Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, FIS Bildung) and cross-referencing. Forty-four studies were analyzed via qualitative content analysis. The goal is to provide a descriptive overview of findings, patterns, and relationships. Findings indicate that AR is widely adopted across diverse domains and institutional contexts, primarily through mobile-based AR applications for K–12 learning. Native app development signals growing technological maturity. AR enhances both cognitive and emotional-motivational outcomes, though its potential to support social interaction remains insufficiently investigated. The predominant function of AR is the provision of information. Most of the examined studies are grounded in constructivist or cognitivist learning theories, particularly the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning. Only limited references to emotional-motivational frameworks and minimal references to behaviorist frameworks were found. Full article

Background/Objectives: Anxiety disorders (ADs) affect up to 20% of mothers in the postpartum period, characterized by psychological symptoms (e.g., emotion dysregulation; ER) and physical symptoms (e.g., disrupted bodily awareness). Although Cognitive Behavioural Therapy effectively reduces anxiety and mood symptoms, it shows limited efficacy in addressing ER difficulties and rarely targets interoceptive dysfunction—both common in postpartum ADs. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a brief mindfulness-based intervention in improving anxiety, ER, and interoception in mothers with postpartum ADs. A secondary aim is to examine changes in brain connectivity associated with these domains. Methods: This protocol describes a proof-of-concept randomized controlled trial involving 50 postpartum mothers with ADs. Participants will be randomized to receive either a 4-week mindfulness intervention plus treatment-as-usual (TAU) or TAU alone. Participants in the mindfulness + TAU group will complete a virtual 4-week group intervention adapted from Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. The TAU group will receive usual care for 4 weeks and then be offered the mindfulness intervention. Self-report measures of anxiety, ER, and interoception will be collected at baseline, post-intervention, and at a 3-month follow-up. Resting-state functional MRI will be conducted at baseline and post-intervention to assess functional connectivity changes. This trial has been registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT07262801). Results: Improvements in anxiety, ER, and interoception are anticipated, along with decreased default mode network, and increased salience network connectivity post-intervention is hypothesized. Conclusions: This study will be the first to examine the combined psychological and neural effects of mindfulness in postpartum ADs, offering a potentially scalable mind–body treatment. Full article

Emotional Dysregulation and Stress-Related Psychopathology in Workers Exposed to Occupational Stress

Emotional dysregulation (ED) reflects a heightened reactivity to stimuli, characterized by excessive negative affect and impulsive behaviors. This study aimed to evaluate ED in workers seeking care for occupational stress and to examine its associations with sociodemographic characteristics, occupational stress, and the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Eighty-seven workers referred for work-related stress were assessed using the Psychological Stress Measure (PSM) and the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) for stress, the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) for psychopathology, and the RIPoSt-40 for ED. Group comparisons and correlation analyses were conducted using parametric or non-parametric tests, as appropriate. Forty-six percent of participants met criteria for Adjustment Disorders and 54% for Major Depressive Disorder. No significant differences between diagnostic groups emerged for ED or symptom severity. Women reported higher perceived stress and anxiety than men. Negative ED domains—affective instability, negative emotionality, and emotional impulsivity—showed moderate-to-strong positive correlations with stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Affective instability was also related to job stress dimensions, correlating negatively with decision latitude and positively with job demands. Negative emotional dysregulation appears to be a transdiagnostic vulnerability factor for stress-related psychopathology. Screening for ED may support early detection and targeted preventive interventions in occupational settings. Full article
