ChatGPT-4o and OpenAI-o1: A Comparative Analysis of Its Accuracy in Refractive Surgery

Background: To assess the accuracy of ChatGPT-4o and OpenAI-o1 in answering refractive surgery questions from the AAO BCSC Self-Assessment Program and to evaluate whether their performance could meaningfully support clinical decision making, we compared the models with 1983 ophthalmology residents and clinicians. Methods: A randomized, questionnaire-based study was conducted with 228 text-only questions from the Refractive Surgery section of the BCSC Self-Assessment Program. Each model received the prompt, “Please provide an answer to the following questions.” Accuracy was measured as the proportion of correct answers and reported with 95 percent confidence intervals. Differences between groups were assessed with the chi-squared test for independence and pairwise comparisons. Results: OpenAI-o1 achieved the highest score (91.2%, 95% CI 87.6–95.0%), followed by ChatGPT-4o (86.4%, 95% CI 81.9–90.9%) and the average score from 1983 users of the Refractive Surgery section of the BCSC Self-Assessment Program (77%, 95% CI 75.2–78.8%). Both language models significantly outperformed human users. The five-point margin of OpenAI-o1 over ChatGPT-4o did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.1045) but could represent one additional correct decision in twenty clinically relevant scenarios. Conclusions: Both ChatGPT-4o and OpenAI-o1 significantly outperformed BCSC Program users, demonstrating a level of accuracy that could augment medical decision making. Although OpenAI-o1 scored higher than ChatGPT-4o, the difference did not reach statistical significance. These findings indicate that the “advanced reasoning” architecture of OpenAI-o1 offers only incremental gains and underscores the need for prospective studies linking LLM recommendations to concrete clinical outcomes before routine deployment in refractive-surgery practice. Stylistic neutrality is the basis for the stylistic evaluation of maps. Furthermore, the stylistic neutrality of a map as a cartographic text may be related to objectivity. However, what constitutes stylistic neutrality is not clearly stated in the field of cartography. The problem is complicated by the fact that the stylistically neutral image is a hypothetical image. The aim of this research is to investigate stylistic neutrality by exploring the peculiarities of cartographic language functioning in different fields of social activity. The research combines descriptive analysis, stylistic analysis, cartographic and interpretative methods. Firstly, the research reveals the concept of cartographic stylistic neutrality, in line with the cartographic linguistic paradigm. Secondly, an analysis of the characteristics of cartographic language in different fields of social activity from the point of view of stylistic neutrality is carried out. Thirdly, an example is developed to illustrate stylistic cartographic neutrality. Stylistic neutrality is characterised by the stylistic features of cartographic language: clarity, accuracy, conciseness, calmness, abstractness, temperance, neutrality and moderateness. The style of cartographic production for inventory and research activities is closest to stylistic neutrality, while the style of reflective activity is the most expressive and acts as a source of concreteness for stylistic neutrality. Mobile smartphones are prime targets for sophisticated surveillanceware, designed to covertly monitor specific individuals. While mobile operating systems implement various protection mechanisms, their defenses are frequently bypassed due to risky user behaviors or underlying software flaws, leading to persistent successful attacks. This paper addresses the critical research problem of how targeted mobile spyware can be effectively counteracted, particularly given its pervasive and evolving threat amplified by sophisticated evasion techniques. To contribute to this understanding, we comprehensively review mobile surveillanceware variants, namely stalkerware and mercenary spyware. We also critically review mobile OS protection mechanisms, and we detail how surveillanceware bypasses or exploits them. Our analysis reveals that, despite continuous efforts by mobile operating system and device manufacturers, both Android and iOS platforms struggle to protect devices and users, particularly against sophisticated mercenary spyware attacks, remaining vulnerable to these threats. Finally, we systematically review state-of-the-art countermeasures, identify their shortcomings, and highlight unresolved research challenges and concrete directions for future investigation for enhanced prevention and detection. Crucially, this future research must increasingly leverage artificial intelligence, including deep learning and large language models, to effectively keep pace with and overcome the sophisticated tactics employed by modern spyware. Focusing on the legend of Phaedra and Hippolytus as developed in Euripides and Seneca and especially in Racine’s Phèdre and taking into account as well its further development in works by Camillo Boito, Luchino Visconti, and Yukio Mishima, I make the following arguments: (1) Contrary to many theologians and philosophers of love, a pathological form of love that issues in murder and suicide should not be regarded as unworthy of serious attention. Racine’s tragedy provides a catharsis for universal experiences of unrequited love and jealousy, a major human phenomenon. (2) Contrary to Paul Valéry, Phèdre’s love cannot be called merely animal, since the analytical insight she develops into her morbid passion carries tremendous moral force and lies at the origin of the European psychological novel, as launched by Madame de La Fayette a year later. (3) Contrary to François Mauriac, even if she is a heroine of desire or concupiscence rather than of “true love” (in contrast to the relatively innocent affections of Hippolyte and Aricie), the incredible beauty of her language resists such an easy categorization. (4) Study of concrete presentations of “love” in literature confirms that the meaning and use of this word is marked by an irreducible pluralism. Philosophical and theological analysis of love has to come to terms with this. (5) The role of a work of art, in crystallizing archetypical emotions and situations in a way that carries authority, is to provide the middle ground between the abstractions of philosophy on the one hand and the uncontrollable diversity of the empirical on the other. Even psychologies or sociologies of love, which claim to be close to the concrete data, need to be anchored in and corrected by the special concrete vision that only great literature can bring. This paper combines Christopher Alexander’s pattern language with generative AI into a hybrid design framework. The result is a narrative synthesis that can be useful for informed project design. Advanced large language models (LLMs) enable the real-time synthesis of design patterns, making complex architectural choices accessible and comprehensible to stakeholders without specialized architectural knowledge. A lightweight, web-based tool lets project teams rapidly assemble context-specific subsets of Alexander’s 253 patterns, reducing a traditionally unwieldy 1166-page corpus to a concise, shareable list. Demonstrated through a case study of a university department building, this method results in environments that are psychologically welcoming, fostering health, productivity, and emotional well-being. LLMs translate these curated patterns into vivid experiential narratives—complete with neuroscientifically informed ornamentation. LLMs produce representative images from the verbal narrative, revealing a surprisingly traditional design that was never input as a prompt. Two separate LLMs (for cross-checking) then predict the pattern-generated design to catalyze improved productivity as compared to a standard campus building. By bridging abstract design principles and concrete human experience, this approach democratizes architectural planning grounded on Alexander’s human-centered, participatory ethos. Full article

This study explores how Speech and Elocution Training (SET) activates language potential and fosters career-oriented development among higher vocational students through self-efficacy mechanisms. Through qualitative interviews with four vocational graduates who participated in SET 5 to 10 years ago, the research identifies three key findings. First, SET comprises curriculum content (e.g., workplace communication modules such as hosting, storytelling, and sales pitching) and classroom training using multimodal TED resources and Toastmasters International-simulated practices, which spark language potential through skill-focused, realistic exercises. Second, these pedagogies facilitate a progression where initial language potential evolves from nascent career interests into concrete job-seeking intentions and long-term career plans: completing workplace-related speech tasks boosts confidence in career choices, planning, and job competencies, enabling adaptability to professional challenges. Third, SET aligns with Bandura’s four self-efficacy determinants; these are successful experiences (including personalized and virtual skill acquisition and certified affirmation), vicarious experiences (via observation platforms and constructive peer modeling), verbal persuasion (direct instructional feedback and indirect emotional support), and the arousal of optimistic emotions (the cognitive reframing of challenges and direct desensitization to anxieties). These mechanisms collectively create a positive cycle that enhances self-efficacy, amplifies language potential, and clarifies career intentions. While highlighting SET’s efficacy, this study notes a small sample size limitation, urging future mixed-methods studies with diverse samples to validate these mechanisms across broader vocational contexts and refine understanding of language training’s role in fostering linguistic competence and career readiness. Sex workers and formerly incarcerated people with a cervix face significant structural, interpersonal, and emotional barriers to cervical cancer screening, despite being at elevated risk for HPV infection. HPV self-sampling (HPV-SS) is a validated, user-directed method that has the potential to address these barriers, yet it remains excluded from Ontario’s organized screening program. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of structurally marginalized individuals with a cervix who were offered HPV-SS as part of a mixed-methods pilot in the Greater Toronto Area. Five virtual focus groups were conducted with 34 participants, including both those who used the HPV-SS kit and those who declined it. Using inductive thematic analysis, we identified barriers to traditional screening including fear, stigma, mistrust of healthcare providers, logistical constraints, and a lack of accessible information. HPV-SS was widely described as more acceptable, empowering, and emotionally manageable, offering participants autonomy, privacy, and control over their care. Concerns included swab design, uncertainty about correct use, and unclear follow-up after positive results. Participants offered concrete, community-informed recommendations to improve HPV-SS implementation, including opt-in distribution models, gender-affirming language, and trauma-informed educational materials. The findings highlight the urgent need to integrate HPV-SS into organized screening programs to advance equitable access to cervical cancer prevention for marginalized populations. Full article

Background: Bioinformatics is increasingly used in various scientific works. Large amounts of heterogeneous data are being generated these days. It is difficult to interpret and analyze these data effectively. Several software tools have been developed to facilitate the handling and analysis of biological data, based on specific needs. Methods: The Galaxy web platform is one of these software tools, allowing free access to users and facilitating the use of thousands of tools. Other software tools, such as Bioconda or Jupyter Notebook, facilitate the installation of tools and their dependencies. In addition to these tools, RStudio can be mentioned as a powerful interface that facilitates the use of the R programming language for data analysis and statistics. Results: The aim of this study is to provide the scientific community with guides on how to perform bioinformatics/biostatistical analyses in a simpler manner. With this work, we also try to democratize well-documented software tools to make them suitable for both bioinformaticians and non-bioinformaticians. We believe that user-friendly guides and real-life/concrete examples will provide end-users with suitable and easy-to-use methods for their bioinformatics analysis needs. Furthermore, tutorials and usage examples are available on our dedicated GitHub repository. Conclusions: These tutorials/examples (In English and/or French) could be used as pedagogical tools to promote bioinformatics analysis and offer potential solutions to several bioinformatics needs. Worldwide, the healthcare industry produces massive quantities of medical waste (MW), most of which is incinerated, releasing large quantities of dioxins, mercury, and other pollutants. Despite this, only a limited number of studies have explored the incorporation of MW into construction materials, with a special focus on cement-based construction materials (CB-CMs). However, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no existing review formally structures, summarizes, correlates, and discusses the findings of previous studies on MW in CB-CMs to encourage further research and applications of this promising alternative. Therefore, the added value of this study lies in providing an innovative and critical analysis of existing research on the use of MW in CB-CMs, consolidating and evaluating dispersed findings through a systematic literature review, enhancing understanding of the topic, and identifying knowledge gaps to guide future research. A robust systematic literature review was conducted, encompassing 40 peer-reviewed research articles, retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. The methodology involved a three-stage process: a descriptive analysis of the included articles, the identification and synthesis of key thematic areas, and a critical evaluation of the data to ensure a rigorous and systematic report. The selection criteria prioritized peer-reviewed research articles in English with full text availability published in the last 7 years, explicitly excluding conference papers, book chapters, short reports, and articles not meeting the language or accessibility requirements. The results indicate that the influence of MW in CB-CM varies significantly. For example, while the incorporation of face masks as fiber reinforcement in concrete generally enhances its mechanical and durability properties, the use of gloves is less effective and not always recommended. Finally, it was found that further research is needed in this field due to its novelty. Full article

To address the challenges of low automation in tunnel wet-spraying jumbos and the heavy reliance on manual expertise for ensuring the spraying quality, this study proposes a novel task planning method for tunnel spraying operations. First, the tunnel surface to be sprayed is aligned with the designed contour using a vehicle navigation method, enabling the estimation of the overbreak and underbreak volumes. These volumes are then utilized to hierarchically plan the spraying tasks (e.g., patching, filling, and surface smoothing). A concrete coating thickness prediction method is developed, incorporating static and dynamic coating accumulation models with key process parameters—spraying flow rate Q, air pressure P, and spraying distance H—as independent variables. Based on the required thickness for each task layer, operational parameters such as the spraying duration t and nozzle movement speed v are optimized. By analyzing the spray gun action combinations and integrating hierarchical task planning with parameter optimization, a Planning Domain Definition Language (PDDL) domain file and problem file are designed to generate the spray gun action sequences and paths via a planner. The experimental results demonstrate that the overbreak volume on the sprayed tunnel surface is reduced to approximately 3 cm after applying the planned sequences. The proposed method autonomously generates the task hierarchies and the corresponding spray gun actions based on the 3D morphology of the tunnel surface, effectively ensuring the spraying quality while significantly reducing the dependence on manual intervention. This approach provides a practical solution for enhancing automation and precision in tunnel spraying operations. Full article

The turn away from phenomenology in 20th century French philosophy was in large part due to an increased emphasis on Ferdinand de Saussure’s notion of “linguistic structure”, i.e., that language is the internal system of differences between signs. Thinkers such as Paul Ricoeur and Jean-François Lyotard famously offered a “semiological challenge” to phenomenology. The idea was that phenomenology, especially Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, reduces to the sensible world and cannot think linguistic structure. Thus, the argument goes that phenomenology leaves out a basic element of human life: not only can it not think linguistic structure, but it also cannot think about elements, e.g., writing and text, which are its result. This paper takes up this challenge, especially in reference to Merleau-Ponty’s terminology in Phenomenology of Perception of “speaking speech” (parole parlante) and “spoken speech” (parole parlée). I point out that, in retrospect of his later work, Merleau-Ponty very clearly did want to take linguistic structure seriously. This, however, means that we need to reconsider some of the basic themes in his work. Taking inspiration from the recently published “problem of speech” lectures, I reconstruct Merleau-Ponty’s idea that speech is a concrete limit situation from which we get both the idea of a language structure in which there are differences and of an ontological difference between being and beings. This is an internal criticism of both linguistic structure and formal ontology. I begin the paper by noting that, in Merleau-Ponty’s descriptions of the tacit and spoken cogito, also in Phenomenology of Perception, Merleau-Ponty criticizes the notion of a subject to which language refers and highlights the notion of a subject that defies representational and denotational structure. I do not, however, go along with Merleau-Ponty’s own criticism of the tacit ego, which he ultimately declared too subjectivistic. Ultimately, I hope to stress the importance of linguistic structure and writing in Merleau-Ponty’s ontology. This is an ontology of that is fragile and requires symbolization. This paper emphasizes under-developed themes in Merleau-Ponty’s work such as bodily event, difference, symbolization, and the writing of philosophy. Full article

The rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) has made software security and reliability a critical concern. With multi-language programs running on edge computing, embedded systems, and sensors, each connected device represents a potential attack vector, threatening data integrity and privacy. Symbolic execution is a key technique for automated vulnerability detection. However, unknown function interfaces, such as sensor interactions, limit traditional concrete or concolic execution due to uncertain function returns and missing symbolic expressions. Compared with system simulation, the traditional method is to construct an interface abstraction layer for the symbolic execution engine to reduce the cost of simulation. Nevertheless, the disadvantage of this solution is that the manual modeling of these functions is very inefficient and requires professional developers to spend hundreds of hours. In order to improve efficiency, we propose an LLM-based automated approach for modeling unknown functions. By fine-tuning a 20-billion-parameter language model, it automatically generates function models based on annotations and function names. Our method improves symbolic execution efficiency, reducing reliance on manual modeling, which is a limitation of existing frameworks like KLEE. Experimental results primarily focus on comparing the usability, accuracy, and efficiency of LLM-generated models with human-written ones. Our approach was integrated into one verification platform project and applied to the verification of smart contracts with distributed edge computing characteristics. The application of this method directly reduces the manual modeling effort from a month to just a few minutes. This provides a foundational validation of our method’s feasibility, particularly in reducing modeling time while maintaining quality. IT (Information Technology) support plays a major role in CPSs (cyber-physical systems). More and more IT solutions and CIS (complex information system) modules are being developed to help engineering systems to a higher level of efficiency. The different specificities of different technological environments require a very different IT approach. Increasing the efficiency of different manufacturing processes requires an appropriate architecture. The Zachman framework guidelines were applied to design a suitable framework architecture for the welding process. A literature search was conducted to explore the conditions for component matching to a complex information system, in which advanced data management and data protection are important. In order to effectively manage the standards, a dedicated module needs to be created that can be integrated into the MES-ERP (Manufacturing Execution System-Enterprise Resource Planning) architecture. The result of the study is the creation of business UML (Unified Modeling Language) and BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) diagrams and a roadmap to start a concrete application development. The paper concludes with an example to illustrate ideas for the way forward. Full article

This paper investigates the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the context of an interconnected, multi-scale world. As global challenges intensify, policy frameworks must navigate the complex intersection of social, economic, and environmental threats to human development. The United Nations SDGs offer a common language and a roadmap with a standard set of development indicators. However, the current lack of progress reveals the need for context-specific implementations of this universal model reflecting and responding to local realities, challenges, and capacities. By combining a systematic literature review with qualitative and quantitative coding via MAXQDA, this study applies grounded theory to analyze how the growing body of research conceptualizes and operationalizes SDG localization. The findings identify key mechanisms, themes, and case studies that illustrate how SDGs are adapted to local contexts. The analysis highlights the critical role of agency, emphasizing that localization is not merely a top-down implementation but a dynamic process that aligns global goals with local governance structures, actors, and tools to foster ownership and long-term impact. Importantly, the study underscores that cities and local governance entities are not just sites of implementation but active drivers of SDG adaptation, serving as crucial policy spheres that transform a global agenda into concrete local action. Religion is one of the most important factors in architectural shaping. The concepts or sub-concepts that make up religion have a different language that each designer wants to explain. This language is presented semantically and syntactically through the architect and the user interprets this fiction mostly with its syntactic dimension. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into modern mosque design by establishing a connection between belief systems and architectural expressions. Moreover, the study contributes to heritage preservation efforts by proposing a framework that links historical values to contemporary practices. In this study, it is aimed to analyze the effects of the belief concepts in the Islamic religion by analyzing the semantic and syntactic dimensions in rural wooden mosque architecture. Starting from the assumption that abstract values have a language in shaping, the principle of semiotics was utilized to reach concrete results. How the concepts and principles are determined in the semantic and syntactic dimensions of semiotics are explained. In the examination of the semantic dimension, 5 concepts from the concepts of belief in the Islamic religion, namely wahdaniyet, survival, knowledge, powerand hereafter, were discussed. The syntactic dimension was analyzed under basic design principles. The semantic and syntactic dimensions of the sample wooden mosques were analyzed, interpretedand analyzed through architectural drawings, interiorand exterior visuals. These analyses provide practical strategies for translating abstract religious principles into tangible design elements, enhancing their applicability in both educational and professional contexts. As a result, the concepts that emerged in the analyzed examples and the indicators of the sub-concepts belonging to these concepts were presented. It is suggested that the determined analysis model can contribute to design education in design departments and provide convenience to designers and researchers. The model also serves as a tool for creating mosque designs that respect cultural identity while addressing contemporary needs. This research is important in terms of being a reference for the concrete expression of the concepts that we cannot see in architectural formations but we can feel that they exist. Full article
