Background/Objectives: Despite legal frameworks acknowledging the need to protect the rights of female prisoners, penitentiary systems often neglect gender-specific needs, particularly for foreign women. Among them, Muslim women face distinct challenges linked to cultural and religious practices, which are frequently unmet in prison contexts. This review aims to explore the academic literature on the experiences of Muslim women in detention. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using three major bibliographic databases—Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science—covering the period from 2010 to 2024. Inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed studies examining the condition of Muslim women in prison. Of the initial pool, only four articles met the criteria and were included in the final analysis. Results: The review reveals a marked scarcity of research on Muslim women in prison at both national and international levels. This gap may be due to their limited representation or cultural factors that hinder open discourse. The selected studies highlight key issues, including restricted access to services, limited ability to practice religion, and language and cultural barriers. These challenges contribute to increased psychological vulnerability, which is often underestimated in prison settings. Conclusions: There is an urgent need for targeted research and culturally competent training for prison staff to adequately support Muslim women in detention. Greater academic and institutional attention is essential to develop inclusive policies that consider the intersection of gender, religion, and migration, particularly in the post-release reintegration process. In crisis-stricken economies, leadership effectiveness increasingly hinges not on technical expertise alone but on emotional competence. While emotional intelligence (EI) has been widely acknowledged as a catalyst for effective leadership and employee outcomes, its role in volatile and resource-scarce contexts remains underexplored. This study addresses this critical gap by investigating the impact of five core EI dimensions, namely self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills, on employee performance amid Lebanon’s ongoing multidimensional crisis. Drawing on Goleman’s EI framework and the Job Demands–Resources theory, the research employs a quantitative, cross-sectional design with data collected from 398 employees across sectors in Lebanon. Structural Equation Modeling revealed that all EI dimensions significantly and positively influenced employee performance, with self-regulation (β = 0.485) and empathy (β = 0.361) emerging as the most potent predictors. These findings underscore the value of emotionally intelligent leadership in fostering productivity, resilience, and team cohesion during organizational instability. This study contributes to the literature by contextualizing EI in an under-researched, crisis-affected setting, offering nuanced insights into which emotional competencies are most impactful during prolonged uncertainty. Practically, it positions EI as a strategic leadership asset for crisis management and sustainable human resource development in fragile economies. The results inform leadership training, policy design, and organizational strategies that aim to enhance employee performance through emotionally intelligent practices. Full article

Sustainability has emerged as a prominent concern globally, extending its influence into various domains, including education. It is recognized as of utmost importance to address global environmental challenges. However, there is a critical gap in the perception of innovative teaching strategies, i.e., interdisciplinary collaboration, experiential learning, and targeted approaches, to improve sustainability literacy and its applications. This review analyzes existing environmental and sustainability education frameworks and approaches to determine desired learning outcomes and challenges associated with sustainability education. Also, it explores and identifies concepts, theories, and assumptions found within the literature review, promoting sustainability integration within engineering education. The review was conducted to facilitate the development and improvement of sustainability education within the Architectural Engineering discipline, a field known for emphasizing educational innovation and technical excellence. By synthesizing existing ideas related to sustainability and sustainable development, this work aims to guide curriculum designers and educators in fostering sustainability competencies among engineering students within the built environment. Procedural physician-scientists have made significant contributions to medicine and science, with twelve proceduralists receiving a Nobel Prize. Unfortunately, several systemic challenges have jeopardized the existence, let alone the flourishing, of procedural physician-scientists: the widening gap in the National Institutes of Health salary cap, decreasing funding from nonfederal public and private agencies, and shifting priorities among U.S. hospitals, payers, and policymakers toward relative value unit productivity-based compensation and fee-for-service models. Additional pressures include prolonged training pathways and the need to maintain clinical continuity. Adopting a team science approach may offer a powerful strategy to mitigate these competing demands, support rigorous scientific inquiry, and address the growing complexity of biomedical research. Concerted efforts by the federal government, policymakers, corporations, institutions, and procedural departments will also be crucial to restoring the vitality of this diminishing workforce. Background/Objectives: Clinical Research Nurses (CRNs) have emerged as pivotal actors in the conduct, coordination, and oversight of clinical trials globally. Over the past three decades, the role of the CRN has evolved in response to the increasing complexity of research protocols, ethical standards, and regulatory frameworks. Originating as task-oriented support figures, CRNs have progressively assumed broader responsibilities that include patient advocacy, protocol integrity, ethical vigilance, and interprofessional coordination. By mapping the global literature on CRNs, this review will examine how their role has been defined, implemented, and evaluated over the past three decades. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using JBI methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The search covered the peer-reviewed and gray literature from 1990 to 2024 across major databases. Data analysis combined traditional extraction with topic modeling, Multiple Correspondence Analysis, and k-means clustering to identify key themes. Results: From the 128 included studies, four major themes emerged: clinical trial management, role perception and team integration, professional competencies and development, and systemic barriers. Despite formal competency frameworks, CRNs face inconsistencies in role recognition, unstable contracts, and limited career pathways. Emotional strain and professional isolation are recurrent. Over time, their functions have evolved from task execution to broader responsibilities, including advocacy and ethical oversight. However, no studies reported patient-level outcomes, revealing a critical gap in the evidence base. Conclusions: CRNs play a vital but undervalued role in clinical research. Persistent structural challenges hinder their development and visibility. Enhancing institutional support and generating outcome-based evidence are necessary steps toward fully integrating CRNs into research infrastructures. Full article

The construction sector significantly contributes to global environmental degradation through intensive resource extraction, high energy consumption, and substantial waste generation. Addressing this unsustainable trajectory requires integrated approaches that simultaneously improve operational efficiency and material circularity. Lean Construction (LC) and Circular Economy (CE) offer complementary frameworks for enhancing process performance and reducing environmental impacts. However, their combined implementation remains underdeveloped and fragmented. This study conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) of 18 peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and 2025, selected using PRISMA 2020 guidelines and sourced from Scopus and Web of Science databases. A mixed-method approach combines bibliometric mapping and qualitative content analysis to investigate how LC and CE are jointly operationalized in construction contexts. The findings reveal that LC improves cost, time, and workflow reliability, while CE enables reuse, modularity, and lifecycle extension. Integration is further supported by digital tools—such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA), and digital twins—which enhance traceability and flow optimization. Nonetheless, persistent barriers—including supply chain fragmentation, lack of standards, and regulatory gaps—continue to constrain widespread adoption. This review identifies six strategic enablers for LC-CE integration: crossdisciplinary competencies, collaborative governance, interoperable digital systems, standardized indicators, incentive-based regulation, and pilot demonstrator projects. By consolidating fragmented evidence, the study provides a structured research agenda and practical insights to guide the transition toward more circular, efficient, and sustainable construction practices. Background: Adequate nutrition is fundamental to the health and performance of young athletes. However, many fail to meet nutritional recommendations. Nutrition education programmes are promising, cost-effective strategies for improving dietary habits. However, research gaps persist, coupled with notable variability amongst the intervention programmes targeting youth athletes. The aim of this study was to assess the nutritional knowledge of Portuguese youth athletes and to evaluate the effectiveness of a nutrition education programme in improving football players’ understanding of a healthy diet. Methods: Participants were recruited from a local football club through public announcement. Male youth football players aged 13 to 18 years, training at least 3 times per week and competing regularly over the past six months, were eligible. The baseline assessment included anthropometric measurements, an assessment of the adherence to the Mediterranean diet using the KIDMED questionnaire, and an assessment of general and sports nutrition knowledge via a structured questionnaire. Following the intervention—comprising three face-to-face educational sessions and two digital infographics—the KIDMED and nutrition knowledge questionnaires were re-administered. Results: A sample of 38 male footballers were eligible for this study. Most participants exhibited a healthy body weight, with a corresponding adequate body composition. The mean KIDMED score indicated moderate adherence to the Mediterranean diet with no statistically significant difference between the baseline and post-intervention (6.79 ± 1.52 versus 6.97 ± 2.01, p > 0.05). There was a significant enhancement in overall nutrition knowledge, accompanied by notable improvements in the comprehension of macro- and micronutrient sources and sports nutrition principles. Conclusions: This pilot programme proved effective in enhancing young football players’ knowledge of nutrient sources and sports nutrition. Full article

ICT tools are fundamental for promoting educational inclusion, as they allow for flexible teaching practices adapted to the diversity of students. Their appropriate integration into teaching makes it easier to respond to different paces, styles, and needs, promoting the active and meaningful participation of all learners. However, this inclusive potential is only fulfilled if equitable access to and use of ICT is guaranteed, both at school and at home. This qualitative study explores the digital divide in its three main dimensions: access to technology, digital skills, and the meaningful use of ICT in educational settings. Through focus groups and semi-structured interviews, the study gathers the perceptions of different members of the educational community. The sample consists of 89 participants, including teachers, students, families, and school administrators from the Communities of Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha. The results reveal a common concern about inequalities in ICT access and use, related to economic, geographical, and educational factors. These findings emphasise the need for targeted public policies to bridge digital gaps and highlight the importance of promoting digital competence across the entire educational community to achieve true educational inclusion. Chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) incidents pose significant challenges requiring swift, coordinated responses to safeguard public health. This is especially the case in densely populated urban areas, where the public is not only at risk but can also be of assistance. Public cooperation is critical to the success of mass decontamination efforts, yet prior research has primarily focused on technical and procedural aspects, neglecting the psychological and social factors driving casualty behaviour. This paper addresses this gap through a narrative literature review, chosen for its flexibility in synthesising fragmented and interdisciplinary research across psychology, sociology, and emergency management. The review identified two primary pathways influencing casualty decision making: rational and affective. Rational pathways rely on deliberate decisions supported by clear communication and trust in responders’ competence, while affective pathways are shaped by emotional responses like fear and anxiety, exacerbated by uncertainty. Trust emerged as a critical factor, with effective —i.e., transparent, empathetic, and culturally sensitive— communication being proven to enhance public cooperation. Cultural and societal norms further shape individual and group responses during emergencies. This paper demonstrates the value of narrative reviews in addressing a complex, multifaceted topic such as casualty behaviour, enabling the integration of diverse insights. By emphasising behavioural, psychological, and social dimensions, the results of this paper offer actionable strategies for emergency responders to enhance public cooperation and improve outcomes during CBRN incidents. Background/Objectives: Within their host trees, mountain pine beetles (MPBs, Dendroctonus ponderosae) interact with many fungal species, each releasing a unique profile of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The FVOCs released by the two primary symbionts of MPBs, Grosmannia clavigera and Ophiostoma montium, have been found to enhance MPB attraction in the field and laboratory studies. Opportunistic, saprophytic fungal species, such as Aspergillus sp. and Trichoderma atroviride, are also common in MPB galleries and can negatively impact MPB fitness. However, little is known about the FVOCs produced by these fungal species and how they may impact MPB feeding and attraction. Methods: To address this knowledge gap, we characterized the FVOC profile of T. atroviride, and performed bioassays to test the effects of its FVOCs on MPB attraction and feeding activity. Results: Our chemical analysis revealed several FVOCs from T. atroviride known to inhibit the growth of competing fungal species and impact subcortical-beetle attraction. Conclusions: From those FVOCs, we recommended four compounds—2-pentanone, 2-heptanone, 2-pentanol, and phenylethyl alcohol—for use in future field tests as anti-attraction lures for MPBs. In bioassays, we also observed strong MPB repellency from FVOCs released by T. atroviride, as well as the mild effects of FVOCs on MPB feeding activity. Our findings highlight the potential for these FVOCs to be utilized in the development of more effective MPB anti-attractant lures, which are crucial for the monitoring and management of low-density MPB populations. Reflexivity is a metacognitive process traditionally applied to tasks and actions. Although emotions are a significant component of work life, the application of reflexivity to the emotional domain has received limited attention. This study addresses this gap by critically reviewing empirical evidence on reflexivity and emotions, aiming to understand this relationship and its outcomes in the workplace. A systematic literature review on Scopus and PsycINFO identified 722 records resulting in a final sample of 15 studies that met the PICO inclusion criteria and were included. These studies were analyzed according to recursively developed criteria. The findings showed that reflexivity affects emotions by considering them as the application domain; emotions, in turn, can trigger reflexivity. The outcomes of this relationship concern organizational learning and the workers’ role and identity. This relationship was more frequently investigated in high-emotion professional contexts and with a focus on specific professional roles. Due to the limited number of studies, the findings cannot be generalized. However, this study helps to define the role of reflexivity as a metacognitive competence applicable to emotions. Developing reflexivity within professional and organizational settings may help professionals regulate their own and others’ emotions by learning to detect, make sense of, and question critical emotional episodes. As the wood and furniture industry moves towards the vision of Industry 5.0, a major challenge remains addressing the lack of competencies. This study examines the self-perceived digital and sustainability competencies of 433 final year students at different levels of wood science and technology education in Slovenia and compares them with the expectations of 28 industry stakeholders. Using the established competency frameworks of DigComp and GreenComp, which represent generic competencies, as well as 24 profession-specific competencies related to digitalization and sustainability, the study uses survey data analysis to identify possible discrepancies. The results suggest that students’ self-assessment increases only slightly with increasing educational level, while the expectations of industry stakeholders increase significantly more, leading to notable discrepancies. At the secondary level, stakeholders place greater emphasis on developing students’ generic digital and sustainability competencies, while at the tertiary level, they place increasing importance on profession-specific competencies. It is worth noting that some stakeholders assessed certain competencies as not required for graduates on certain level of education. The study highlights the need for coherent and vertically aligned curriculum structures that reflect evolving competency expectations at all qualification levels. The study shows several areas in which the discrepancy between students’ self-assessments and the expectations of industry stakeholders is particularly pronounced. It highlights the need to better align educational content with the needs identified by industry stakeholders, while recognizing the role of wider social partnership in curriculum development. Such alignment and collaboration is essential to equip graduates with the competencies they need to make a meaningful contribution to the digital and sustainable transformation of the wood and furniture sector. A mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and observational data from disaster drills to evaluate the preparedness levels of 400 healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and administrative staff. The results showed that while knowledge (mean: 3.9) and skills (mean: 4.0) were generally moderate to high, notable gaps in overall preparedness remained. Importantly, 69.5% of participants reported enhanced readiness following simulation drills. Machine learning models, including Random Forest and Artificial Neural Networks, were used to predict preparedness outcomes based on psychosocial variables such as emotional intelligence, teamwork, and stress management. Sentiment analysis and topic modeling of qualitative responses revealed key themes including communication barriers, psychological safety, and the need for ongoing training. The findings highlight the importance of integrating both technical competencies and psychosocial resilience into disaster management programs. This study contributes an innovative framework for evaluating preparedness and offers practical insights for policymakers, disaster planners, and health training institutions aiming to strengthen the sustainability and responsiveness of primary healthcare systems. From Batch to Pilot: Scaling Up Arsenic Removal with an Fe-Mn-Based Nanocomposite

Arsenic contamination in groundwater is a significant public health concern, with As(III) posing a greater and more challenging risk than As(V) due to its higher toxicity, mobility, and weaker adsorption affinity. Fe-Mn-based adsorbents offer a promising solution, simultaneously oxidizing As(III) to As(V), enhancing its adsorption. This study evaluates an Fe-Mn nanocomposite across typical batch (20 mg of adsorbent), fixed-bed column (28 g), and pilot-scale (2.5 kg) studies, bridging the gap between laboratory and real-world applications. Batch experiments yielded maximum adsorption capacities of 6.25 mg/g and 4.71 mg/g in a synthetic matrix and real groundwater, respectively, demonstrating the impact of the water matrix on adsorption. Operational constraints and competing anions led to a lower capacity in the pilot (0.551 mg/g). Good agreement was observed between the breakthrough curves in the pilot (breakthrough at 475 bed volumes) and the fixed-bed column studies (365–587 bed volumes) under similar empty bed contact times (EBCTs). The Thomas, Adams–Bohart, and Yoon–Nelson models demonstrated that lower flow rates and extended EBCTs significantly enhance arsenic removal efficiency, prolonging the operational lifespan. Our findings demonstrate the necessity of continuous-flow experiments using real contaminated water sources and the importance of optimizing flow conditions, EBCTs, and pre-treatment in order to successfully scale up Fe-Mn-based adsorbents for sustainable arsenic removal. Satellite-Based Approach for Crop Type Mapping and Assessment of Irrigation Performance in the Nile Delta

Water scarcity, exacerbated by climate change, population growth, and competing sectoral demands, poses a major threat to agricultural sustainability, particularly in irrigated regions such as the Nile Delta in Egypt. Addressing this challenge requires innovative approaches to evaluate irrigation performance despite the limitations in ground data availability. Traditional assessment methods are often costly, labor-intensive, and reliant on field data, limiting their scalability, especially in data-scarce regions. This paper addresses this gap by presenting a comprehensive and scalable framework that employs publicly accessible satellite data to map crop types and subsequently assess irrigation performance without the need for ground truthing. The framework consists of two parts: First, crop mapping, which was conducted seasonally between 2015 and 2020 for the four primary crops in the Nile Delta (rice, maize, wheat, and clover). The WaPOR v2 Land Cover Classification layer was used as a substitute for ground truth data to label the Landsat-8 images for training the random forest algorithm. The crop maps generated at 30 m resolution had moderate to high accuracy, with overall accuracy ranging from 0.77 to 0.80 in summer and 0.87–0.95 in winter. The estimated crop areas aligned well with national agricultural statistics. Second, based on the mapped crops, three irrigation performance indicators—adequacy, reliability, and equity—were calculated and compared with their established standards. The results reveal a good level of equity, with values consistently below 10%, and a relatively reliable water supply, as indicated by the reliability indicator (0.02–0.08). Average summer adequacy ranged from 0.4 to 0.63, indicating insufficient supply, whereas winter values (1.3 to 1.7) reflected a surplus. A noticeable improvement gradient was observed for all indicators toward the north of the delta, while areas located in the delta’s new lands consistently displayed unfavorable conditions in all indicators. This approach facilitates the identification of regions where agricultural performance falls short of its potential, thereby offering valuable insights into where and how irrigation systems can be strategically improved to enhance overall performance sustainably.
