Rapid urbanization and climate change are intensifying heat exposure in cities, making effective adaptation strategies essential. This study presents a streamlined digital twin modeling framework for simulating the impact of nature-based solutions (NBSs) on outdoor thermal comfort, developed within the Intelligent Communities Lifecycle (ICL) software suite. The approach automates the import of urban geometry from OpenStreetMap and integrates geolocated weather data, enabling users to efficiently test scenarios involving NBSs and surface material modifications. Outdoor thermal comfort is quantified using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), with results visualized through an interactive cloud-based 3D platform to support participatory urban planning. The methodology is demonstrated in Meunierstraat, Leuven (Belgium), where three planning alternatives are compared across seasonal extremes. Simulations show that targeted NBS interventions, particularly temporary participatory measures, can improve thermal comfort under extreme heat. However, the benefits are seasonally dependent and spatially heterogeneous, emphasizing the value of high-resolution, scenario-based analysis. This integrated workflow enhances both technical evidence and stakeholder engagement. While the tool is capable of linking outdoor comfort improvements with building energy performance and carbon emissions, the present paper focuses solely on the outdoor thermal comfort results, leaving indoor–outdoor coupling analysis as a direction for future work. Spontaneous fermentation of sugarcane juice for the production of artisanal sugarcane spirits in the Ecuadorian Amazon is driven by native microbial communities; however, the yeast diversity involved in this process remains poorly characterized. In this descriptive case study, sugarcane juice samples were collected from a single artisanal distillery at three fermentation stages (0, 48, and 96 h). Yeasts were isolated using selective culture techniques, yielding three distinct morphotypes (Y01, Y02, and Y03). A progressive reduction in morphological diversity was observed during fermentation, with isolate Y01 persisting at the final stage (96 h). Differences in crystal violet staining indicated variability in cellular metabolic activity among the isolates under the conditions tested. Biochemical characterization using the API 20C AUX system, combined with molecular identification based on ITS rDNA sequencing, was performed for isolate Y01, which showed ≥99% sequence identity with Pichia bruneiensis. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first report of P. bruneiensis associated with spontaneous sugarcane juice fermentation in an artisanal distillery from the Ecuadorian Amazon. These findings provide a descriptive baseline on yeast biodiversity in this traditional fermentation system and support future studies aimed at the functional characterization of native yeasts involved in artisanal sugarcane spirit production. Eating disorders among adolescents have emerged as a significant global public health concern, with attachment anxiety identified as a critical risk factor for anorexia nervosa (AN) symptoms. Individuals with attachment anxiety often exhibit heightened sensitivity to others’ perceptions and an intense fear of rejection, which may exacerbate their vulnerability to body image concerns. This study investigates the mediating role of appearance-based rejection sensitivity (ARS) and the moderating effect of sex in the relationship between attachment anxiety and AN symptoms among Chinese college students. A total of 826 participants aged 16–25 (M = 18.95, SD = 1.08, 60% females) completed online surveys using three validated scales: the Revised Adult Attachment Scale (RAAS) to assess attachment anxiety, the Appearance-based Rejection Sensitivity Scale (ARSS) to measure sensitivity to rejection related to physical appearance, and the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI) to evaluate AN symptoms. The results reveal that there was no significant difference in attachment anxiety between males and females, while females experienced significantly higher levels of ARS and severity of AN symptoms than males. Attachment anxiety is positively correlated with AN symptoms, with ARS mediating this association. Sex further moderates the relationship between ARS and AN symptoms, with stronger effects observed in females. Current findings suggest that AN symptoms are closely associated with contemporaneous attachment anxiety, with passive sensitivity to potential rejection acting as a mediating factor. This underscores the importance of addressing attachment styles and communication patterns in interventions targeting adolescent AN symptoms, particularly in females. Full article

Vehicle platooning is a cooperative driving scenario in which a set of consecutive, connected and autonomous vehicles travel at the same speed while controlling their inter-vehicular distance. Organising traffic in platoons of vehicles can mitigate issues in road transport by improving safety, energy efficiency, and road usage. Vehicle platooning scenarios are enabled by communication across the fleet, allowing the design of distributed controllers to impose cooperative vehicle motion. In contrast to initial control strategies tailored for specific network topologies, the last decade has witnessed a substantial increase in vehicle platooning control solutions that treat the cooperative platoon motion as the synchronisation of a network of dynamic systems, thereby enabling their use across a wider range of topologies. Despite numerous publications in recent years, the literature lacks a comprehensive survey of network synchronisation methods for vehicle platooning. To fill this gap, this paper aims to review network synchronisation strategies proposed for controlling the longitudinal motion of vehicle platoons over the period 2013–2025, with particular focus on contributions from 2018 onwards. The literature on network-synchronisation-based vehicle platooning methods is reviewed within a four-component framework. Then, the most widely used families of distributed consensus controllers are analysed, and the ways in which heterogeneity, nonlinearities, delays, packet drops, external disturbances, and cyber attacks are accounted for and mitigated are examined, along with different types of closed-loop stability. The review also surveys approaches from the literature for validating and assessing synchronisation algorithms in vehicle platoons, covering both experimental and simulation studies, as well as the related simulation platforms. The review paper concludes by presenting research trends and gaps, as well as potential future directions. Full article

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is attractive for high-frequency communications but adheres very poorly to other materials due to its very low surface energy. Conventionally, surface treatments of PTFE are used to increase the polarity of the PTFE surface and enable bonding to materials with increased surface free energy. However, surface treatments are difficult to scale, can damage surfaces, and often lack reproducibility. Therefore, developing a material that can make PTFE adhere well to other materials without surface treatment is highly desirable. In this study, we aimed to develop a new material with strong adhesion to PTFE. We synthesized three polymer gels from dodecyl acrylate (DA) and 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl acrylate (DMAE): the homopolymer gels PDEAE and PDA, and the copolymer gel P(DEAE-co-DA). The copolymer gel P(DEAE-co-DA) exhibited high pressure-sensitive adhesion to PTFE, recording the highest adhesive strength (F = 430.0 N/m) and the highest peel energy (G = 713.4 J/m2) compared to the homopolymer gels PDEAE and PDA. Mechanical testing showed PDEAE had the greatest strength and toughness, PDA balanced stiffness and extensibility, and P(DEAE-co-DA) was the most flexible and extensible. The P(DEAE-co-DA) with the smoothest surface (Sz ≈ 0.176 µm) showed the highest F and G, implying that surface roughness did not contribute significantly to the interfacial adhesion between the gels and the PTFE. Based on the surface free energy σs and work of adhesion Wa values, the adhesive strength to PTFE was predicted to be PDEAE > P(DEAE-co-DA) > PDA, but the measured G in peel tests contradicted this, indicating that the gels’ viscoelastic deformation and energy dissipation dominate the measured F and G. The frequency-dependent viscoelastic data and relaxation times τ and activation energies Ea suggested optimal adhesion requires a balance of adhesion (mobility for energy dissipation (short τ, low Ea)) and sufficient cohesion (high G′). P(DEAE-co-DA) achieved this balance, explaining its high measured F and G. With precise control of polymer chain mobility, the adhesion of P(DEAE-co-DA) gels can likely be improved further. Future work will employ block copolymerization and monomer-ratio control to tune molecular motion and enhance adhesion to PTFE. Full article

Gold mining in South Africa’s Witwatersrand Basin represents a critical case study of mining-induced environmental degradation affecting interconnected ecological and human systems. While the cascading effects of acid mine drainage (AMD), originating from a legacy of approximately 270 tailings dams containing 6 billion tons of FeS2 waste and 600,000 tons of residual uranium, are widely documented, this evidence often remains fragmented. This study applies a systematic, framework-based analytical approach that integrates multidisciplinary evidence from geochemical, ecological, agricultural, and public health research within a One Health/EcoHealth perspective. Qualitative field observations are used to contextualize and validate the analytical synthesis along the water–soil–food–human continuum. A four-pathway conceptual model, including environmental dispersion, biotic uptake, trophic transfer, and direct human exposure, is developed to structure and interpret the integrated findings. The results demonstrate that mining-derived contaminants propagate through interconnected pathways, leading to persistent contamination of water resources, agricultural systems, and human communities, particularly within the Wonderfonteinspruit watershed. Evidence synthesized across pathways reveals extreme bioaccumulation and exposure levels and elevated uranium levels in the hair of local children. The study concludes that the impacts of acid mine drainage constitute a systemic socio-ecological failure driven by cumulative and interacting exposure pathways that cannot be effectively addressed through sectoral or single-medium interventions. The principal contribution of this research is the development of an operational, transferable framework that enables integrated risk assessment and supports evidence-based management and remediation strategies in post-mining landscapes. LGBTQ+ individuals continue to experience substantial barriers to accessing affirming healthcare, including discrimination, structural inequities, and provider-level limitations. This study aimed to develop an emergent grounded theory model of constructing wholeness in healthcare. Methods: This study employed a secondary constructivist grounded theory analysis of qualitative data from The Rainbow Connections Study, a community-based system dynamics project. Data were collected through eight group model-building sessions conducted via Zoom with 28 LGBTQ+ participants, including older adults, youth, transgender and gender-diverse individuals, and staff from the LGBTQ+ community center who also held service and practitioner roles; analytic claims are framed to reflect this mixed-role sample. Sessions were audio- and video-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding procedures. Constant comparative methods, reflexive memoing, and member checking were used to support analytic rigor and trustworthiness. Results: Analysis revealed a dynamic process in which LGBTQ+ individuals encounter external forces within healthcare systems that alternately support or fragment their sense of self. In response, participants engaged in four interconnected internal processes—interconnecting selves, intra-community support, self-determined care, and meaning-finding—that facilitated movement toward wholeness. These processes were non-linear, iterative, and present across diverse identities and life stages. Conclusions: The emergent theory of Constructing Wholeness in Connecting to Healthcare highlights that LGBTQ+ healthcare experiences extend beyond access and utilization to include identity integration, community reliance, and meaning making. Supporting LGBTQ+ health requires healthcare approaches that affirm wholeness, reduce structural harm, and recognize the central role of community in navigating care. Full article

Instructional leadership is crucial for improving teaching quality and student academic performance, especially in secondary schools where Heads of Department (HoDs) play a vital role. Despite this, there is no empirical evidence on how Science HoDs provide instructional leadership in Lesotho. This study looked at the self-reported instructional leadership techniques of Science HoDs in Lesotho secondary schools and whether they vary based on specific demographic and workload criteria. Using a quantitative descriptive survey approach, data were obtained from 67 Science HoDs using a paper-based questionnaire adapted from the Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS). Descriptive statistics and inferential analysis were employed (t-tests and ANOVA). The data indicate that Science HoDs frequently used tactics such as goal planning and communication, curriculum coordination, learner progress monitoring, teaching time management, and instructional resource availability. However, high-impact pedagogical approaches, such as classroom observation, formal written feedback, and systematic evaluation of teacher learning, were less frequently implemented. Except for the number of courses taught, instructional leadership strategies showed no significant differences by age, gender, qualification, experience, teaching load, or school location. The study reveals a preference for administrative rather than pedagogical instructional leadership, highlighting the need for targeted professional development and policy support to improve HoDs’ capacity for sustained instructional practices in science education. This study examines the impact of social media use on public behavioral intentions regarding waste sorting in China, integrating the Cognition–Affect–Conation model with the Social Amplification of Risk Framework. The proposed framework explores how social media exposure and gratification influence waste sorting intentions through anticipated emotions and environmental risk perception. Regression analysis confirms that information gratification primarily activates positive emotions, while information exposure has a stronger effect on negative emotions. Both affective pathways significantly predict waste sorting intentions, with comparable predictive strengths. Mediation analysis further reveals that information gratification and information exposure indirectly influence behavioral intention through dual emotional pathways and environmental risk perception. Qualitative interviews highlight two structural deficiencies: fragmented knowledge dissemination, which weakens environmental norm internalization, and uneven community integration, which limits behavioral translation. These findings underscore the need for diversified communication strategies and community-based policy interventions to enhance public participation in waste sorting. Full article

With the development of the digital intelligence era, generative AI is being widely used in scientific research, and its impact on graduate students’ research competence has attracted much attention from the academic community. Based on cognitive distribution theory and self-efficacy theory, this study classifies AI applications into three levels from basic to advanced—technical support AI use, text development AI use, and transformation AI use—explores their effects on graduate students’ research competence, and examines the mediating effect of critical thinking and the moderating effect of research self-efficacy. The results of the empirical analysis show that all three types of AI use behaviors are significantly correlated with research competence, with the strongest correlation for text development type and the weakest for technical support type. In the relationship between the three types of AI use behaviors and research competence, critical thinking plays a significant positive mediating role, and research self-efficacy plays a significant moderating role. Universities and tutors should guide students to focus on higher-order AI use behaviors in the text development and transformation categories, promoting the use of critical thinking to avoid technology misuse and improving research self-efficacy to help students accumulate confidence and support their research. Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming language education. However, its pedagogical and sociocultural impacts on Japanese business writing remain underexplored. This study aims to examine how ChatGPT4o-based automated feedback functions within Japanese business writing education for adult learners in online higher education, with particular attention to both its instructional impact and learners’ sociocultural awareness. Situated in a cyber university context where the proportion of adult learners is increasing, the study explores the potential of AI-mediated feedback to address learners’ diverse educational and cultural needs. It employed a mixed-methods design, combining a survey of 27 participants and in-depth interviews with 11 participants. The interviews were transcribed and thematically coded to gain deeper insights into learners’ perceptions. The findings indicate that ChatGPT feedback contributed to learners’ planning of study strategies, the provision of immediate and personalized corrections, the reinforcement of error awareness, and the acquisition of honorific and polite expressions. On the one hand, learners reported that they could quickly understand regional language practices and communication conventions in business contexts, thereby deepening their cultural sensitivity. On the other hand, some learners expressed concern that increased reliance on AI could weaken exploratory and critical learning. These results suggest that ChatGPT can serve not merely as a correction tool but also as an educational resource that simultaneously fosters self-directed learning and sociocultural competence. However, to ensure reliability and cultural appropriateness, hybrid feedback incorporating instructor guidance is necessary. This study has academic significance in demonstrating the potential of extending AI-based feedback to Japanese business communication education, thereby constructing an integrated language and culture learning environment. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications are growing fast in different sectors, such as agricultural, commercial, academic, leisure, and health fields. However, drones pose a significant threat to public safety due to their ability to transmit information, particularly when used in an unauthorized or malicious manner. In fact, in order to protect citizens’ privacy and prevent accidents in high-traffic areas due to poorly controlled flights, no-fly zones for drones have been established in the legislation of a number of countries. Most common UAV detection techniques are based on radio frequencies, which identify drones and their models by monitoring radio frequency signals. However, differentiating between multiple UAVs of the same model is their main limitation. This article fills this gap by proposing a method for physically tracking the communication frames of a registered UAV in the presence of another UAV of the same model. A measurement campaign was conducted to collect real-world RF communication signals from two DJI MAVIC 2 Zoom, two DJI Air2S, and two DJI Phantom drones. This measurement was performed inside and outside an anechoic chamber in order to study the UAV’s communication without any interference and in the presence of other communications. Through detailed statistical analysis, we characterized features such as communication duration, time intervals between communications, signal strength, and patterns in communication timing sequences. Our analysis revealed unique, identifiable patterns for each UAV, even within identical models. Based on these results, we developed an automated system that links communication frames to the corresponding registered drones. The proposed method fills gaps in drone detection and surveillance models, providing valuable information for applications in the fields of security and airspace management. This research lays the foundation for drone identification solutions, thereby addressing a major limitation of current detection technologies. Full article

To understand how student journalists handle news coverage surrounding suicide, this study took a case study approach and analyzed how two student newspaper staffs at U.S.-based universities reported on the topic throughout the 2022–2023 academic year, in which multiple student deaths by suicide occurred on each campus. Guided by the literature on trauma in journalism and the Communication Theory of Coping, and through interviews with reporters, editors, and the newspapers’ advisors and a thematic analysis of the newspapers’ coverage during that academic year, we were able to glean insight into how coverage decisions were made, how students navigated such a sensitive topic, and how they enacted care for each other during and after the coverage period. Our findings underscore the pivotal role of the newspaper advisor in helping students navigate such sensitive reporting. Full article

Guan Yu (d. AD 220), better known by his posthumous title as Guan Gong or Lord Guan, was a prominent military general in the late Han dynasty (AD 206–220). For centuries, Lord Guan has been widely worshipped as both a god of war and a god of wealth throughout China. His worship is particularly prevalent in southern Shanxi, which is celebrated as his birthplace. This region features a notable array of temples dating from the late imperial period, many of which are specifically dedicated to his cult. As tangible heritage, Lord Guan temples represent a significant facet of Chinese architectural and religious history. Today, they continue to serve as religious spaces, where pilgrims and devotees come together to honour the deity through ritual practices and theatrical performances. These activities not only reinforce the community’s religious beliefs but also help to perpetuate the cultural and historical traditions associated with Lord Guan’s worship. Based on fieldwork conducted between 2023 and 2025, the study scrutinises the restoration, preservation and conservation challenges faced by these sacred spaces and structures, emphasising the ongoing tension and collaboration between grassroots religious practices and state-led restoration initiatives. Through this examination, the paper sheds light on the multifaceted nature of tangible and intangible heritage conservation and its implications for Lord Guan’s cult in contemporary society. We study the problem of joint sensing and secure communications in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-based symbiotic radio (SR) system. In the considered system, a dual-functional radar and communication base station (DFRC-BS) achieves secure communications with multiple user terminals (UTs), and at the same time, performs a target sensing task. An RIS simultaneously assists the secure communications between the DFRC-BS and the multiple UTs and conveys its own data to the UTs by modulating the radio frequency signal from the DFRC-BS. Two different SR settings are investigated, namely, parasitic SR (PSR) and commensal SR (CSR). In both the PSR and the CSR situations, the echo signal from the sensing target is interfered by the backscattered signal from the RIS. We propose two strategies for the DFRC-BS to handle with the interference from the RIS, namely, (1) directly sensing without interference cancelation, and (2) performing interference cancelation before sensing. For both the two strategies, we aim to maximize the sum secrecy rate from the DFRC-BS to the multiple UTs while ensuring satisfactory performances for the sensing and the backscatter links. A block coordinate ascend algorithm is proposed to solve the established non-convex optimization problems. Simulation results reveal that at the DFRC-BS, performing interference cancelation leads to an improved system performance. Furthermore, compared with PSR, CSR leads to a higher sum secrecy rate between the DFRC-BS and the UTs. Full article
