In a smart microgrid (SMG) system that deals with unpredictable loads and incorporates fluctuating solar and wind energy, it is crucial to have an efficient method for controlling frequency in order to balance the power between generation and load. In the last decade, cyberattacks have become a growing menace, and SMG systems are commonly targeted by such attacks. This study proposes a framework for the frequency management of an SMG system using an innovative combination of a smart controller (i.e., the Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC)) with three conventional cascaded controllers, including Fractional-Order PI (FOPI), Tilt Integral Fractional Derivative (TIDμ), and Proportional Integral Derivative Acceleration (PIDA). The recently released Eel and Grouper Optimization (EGO) algorithm is used to fine-tune the parameters of the proposed controller. This algorithm was inspired by how eels and groupers work together and find food in marine ecosystems. The Integral Time Squared Error (ITSE) of the frequency fluctuation (ΔF) around the nominal value is used as an objective function for the optimization process. A diesel engine generator (DEG), renewable sources such as wind turbine generators (WTGs), solar photovoltaics (PVs), and storage components such as flywheel energy storage systems (FESSs) and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are all included in the SMG system. Additionally, electric vehicles (EVs) are also installed. In the beginning, the supremacy of the adopted EGO over the Gradient-Based Optimizer (GBO) and the Smell Agent Optimizer (SAO) can be witnessed by taking into consideration the optimization process of the recommended regulator’s parameters, in addition to the optimum design of the membership functions of the fuzzy logic controller by each of these distinct algorithms. The subsequent phase showcases the superiority of the proposed EGO-based FFOPI-TIDμ-PIDA structure compared to EGO-based conventional structures like PID and EGO-based intelligent structures such as Fuzzy PID (FPID) and Fuzzy PD-(1 + PI) (FPD-(1 + PI)); this is across diverse symmetry operating conditions and in the presence of various cyberattacks that result in a denial of service (DoS) and signal transmission delays. Based on the simulation results from the MATLAB/Simulink R2024b environment, the presented control methodology improves the dynamics of the SMG system by about 99.6% when compared to the other three control methodologies. The fitness function dropped to 0.00069 for the FFOPI-TIDμ-PIDA controller, which is about 200 times lower than the other controllers that were compared. Full article

This paper presents a novel Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) framework aimed at enhancing the performance and stability of Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs) in power systems. The proposed system combines fuzzy control theory with the Fractional Order Proportional Integral Derivative (FOPID) technique and employs cascading control theory to significantly improve reliability and robustness. The unique control architecture, termed Fuzzy Fractional Order Proportional Integral (PI) plus Fractional Order Proportional Derivative (PD) plus Integral (Fuzzy FOPI+FOPD+I), integrates advanced control methodologies to achieve superior performance. To optimize the controller parameters, the Teaching–Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO) algorithm is utilized in conjunction with the Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) objective function, ensuring precise tuning for optimal control behavior. The methodology is validated through comparative analyses with controllers reported in prior studies, highlighting substantial improvements in performance metrics. Key findings demonstrate significant reductions in peak overshoot, peak undershoot, and settling time, emphasizing the proposed controller’s effectiveness. Additionally, the robustness of the controller is extensively evaluated under challenging scenarios, including parameter uncertainties and load disturbances. Results confirm its ability to maintain stability and performance across a wide range of conditions, outperforming existing methods. This study presents a notable contribution by introducing an innovative control structure that addresses critical challenges in AVR systems, paving the way for more resilient and efficient power system operations. A fuzzy cascaded PI−PD (FCPIPD) controller is proposed in this paper to optimize load frequency control (LFC) in the linked electrical network. The FCPIPD controller is composed of fuzzy logic, proportional integral, and proportional derivative with filtered derivative mode controllers. Utilizing renewable energy sources (RESs), a dual-area hybrid AC/DC electrical network is used, and the FCPIPD controller gains are designed via secretary bird optimization algorithm (SBOA) with aid of a novel objective function. Unlike the conventional objective functions, the proposed objective function is able to specify the desired LFCs response. Under different load disturbance situations, a comparison study is conducted to compare the performance of the SBOA-based FCPIPD controller with the one-to-one (OOBO)-based FCPIPD controller and the earlier LFC controllers published in the literature. The simulation’s outcomes demonstrate that the SBOA-FCPIPD controller outperforms the existing LFC controllers. For instance, in the case of variable load change and variable RESs profile, the SBOA-FCPIPD controller has the best integral time absolute error (ITAE) value. The SBOA-FCPIPD controller’s ITAE value is 0.5101, while sine cosine adopted an improved equilibrium optimization algorithm-based adaptive type 2 fuzzy PID controller and obtained 4.3142. Furthermore, the work is expanded to include electric vehicle (EV), high voltage direct current (HVDC), generation rate constraint (GRC), governor dead band (GDB), and communication time delay (CTD). The result showed that the SBOA-FCPIPD controller performs well when these components are equipped to the system with/without reset its gains. Also, the work is expanded to include a four-area microgrid system (MGS), and the SBOA-FCPIPD controller excelled the SBOA-CPIPD and SBOAPID controllers. Finally, the SBOA-FCPIPD controller showed its superiority against various controllers for the two-area conventionally linked electrical network. Full article

The ball and balancer system is a popular research platform for studying underactuated mechanical systems and developing control algorithms. It is a well-known two-dimensional balancing problem that has been addressed by a variety of controllers. This research work proposes two controllers that are proportional integral derivative-second derivative-proportional integrator (PIDD2-PI) controller and tilt integral derivative with filter (TID-F) controller in a multivariate, electromechanical, and nonlinear under-actuated ball and balancer system. Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) is an objective function used for designing controllers because of its ability to be more sensitive to overshooting as well as reduced settling time and steady-state error. As part of the analysis, four metaheuristic optimization algorithms are compared in the optimization of proposed control strategies for cascaded control of the ball and balancer system. The algorithms are the Grey Wolf optimization algorithm (GWO), Cuckoo Search algorithm (CSA), Gradient Base Optimization (GBO), and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). The effectiveness of proposed controllers PIDD2-PI and TID-F is investigated to be better in terms of transient time response than proportional integral derivative (PID), proportional integral-derivative (PI-D), proportional integral-proportional derivative (PI-PD) and proportional integral derivative-second derivative-proportional derivative (PIDD2-PD). Moreover, these two proposed controllers have also been compared with recently published work. During the analysis, it is shown that the proposed control strategies exhibit significantly greater robustness and dynamic responsiveness compared to other structural controllers. The proposed controller WOA-PIDD2-PI reduced the 73.38% settling time and 88.16% rise time compared to classical PID. The other proposed controller GWO-TID-F reduced 58.06% the settling time and 26.96% rise time compared to classical PID. These results show that proposed controllers are particularly distinguished in terms of rise time, settling time, maximum overshoot, and set-point tracking. Full article

Multi-area power systems (MAPSs) are highly complex non-linear systems facing a fundamental issue in real-world engineering problems called frequency stability problems (FSP). This paper develops an enhanced slime mold optimization algorithm (ESMOA) to optimize the tuning parameters for a cascaded proportional derivative-proportional integral (PD-PI) controller. The novel ESMOA proposal includes a new system that combines basic SMO, chaotic dynamics, and an elite group. The motion update incorporates the chaotic technique, and the exploitation procedure is enhanced by searching for a select group rather than merely the best solution overall. The proposed cascaded PD-PI controller based on the ESMOA is employed for solving the FSP in MAPSs with two area non-reheat thermal systems to keep the balance between the electrical power load and the generation and provide power system security, reliability, and quality. The proposed cascaded PD-PI controller based on the ESMOA is evaluated using time domain simulation to minimize the integral time-multiplied absolute error (ITAE). It is evaluated in four different test situations with various sets of perturbations. For tuning the cascaded PD-PI controller, the proposed ESMOA is compared to the golden search optimizer (GSO) and circle optimizer (CO), where the proposed ESMOA provides the best performance. Furthermore, the findings of the proposed cascaded PD-PI controller based on the ESMOA outperform previous published PID and PI controllers adjusted using numerous contemporary techniques. This paper presents a controller design technique for cascade control systems based on the grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm. In the proposed control scheme, the proportional-integral-proportional-derivative (PI-PD) controller structure is used to control both the open-loop unstable process in the primary loop and the stable process in the secondary loop. To determine the optimal controller parameters, a new optimization algorithm is used in which the Euclidean distance function is used as a multi-objective function. A symmetry property of the Euclidean distance function is that its distance does not depend on the starting point and destination. The multi-objective function is designed according to system time response specifications such as settling time, overshoot, and steady-state error. Thus, the optimization algorithm allows the simultaneous determination of all controller parameters according to the desired output response. Three simulation studies are presented in the paper and the results are compared with studies using various methods based on internal model control, a modified Smith predictor, and a genetic algorithm. The simulation results reveal that the proposed method improves the performances of the systems in the control of cascade processes. Full article

The demand for energy is increasing at an abrupt pace, which has highly strained the power system, especially with high share of power generation from renewable energy sources (RES). This increasing strain needs to be effectively managed for a continuous and smooth operation of the power system network. Generation and demand exhibit a strong correlation that directly creates an impact on the power system frequency. Fluctuations and disruptions in load frequency can manifest themselves as over-voltages and physical damages in the power grid and, in the worst case, can lead to blackouts. Thus, this paper proposed an effective solution to mitigate the load frequency problem(s), which is initiated by the changing load demand under high penetration of RES. This paper presented an improved cascaded structure, the proportional integral with a fractional operator coupled with proportional derivative PIFOP+PD. The proposed FOP+PD modifies the (1+PD) controller by introducing fractional properties that improve its tracking efficiency and mitigate frequency fluctuations taking minimal time. The introduction of FOP β diversifies its tracking and overall controlling ability, which translates it as a significant controller. The controller optimal parameters are extracted by deploying a dragonfly search algorithm (DSA). The study of the results illustrates that the proposed design displays efficient performance under any disturbance or uncertainty in the power system. Full article

This study develops and implements a design of the Fuzzy Proportional Integral Derivative with filtered derivative mode (Fuzzy PIDF) for Load Frequency Control (LFC) of a two-area interconnected power system. To attain the optimal values of the proposed structure’s parameters which guarantee the best possible performance, the Bees Algorithm (BA) and other optimisation tools are used to accomplish this task. A Step Load Perturbation (SLP) of 0.2 pu is applied in area one to examine the dynamic performance of the system with the proposed controller employed as the LFC system. The supremacy of Fuzzy PIDF is proven by comparing the results with those of previous studies for the same power system. As the designed controller is required to provide reliable performance, this study is further extended to propose three different fuzzy control configurations that offer higher reliability, namely Fuzzy Cascade PI − PD, Fuzzy PI plus Fuzzy PD, and Fuzzy (PI + PD), optimized by the BA for the LFC for the same dual-area power system. Moreover, an extensive examination of the robustness of these structures towards the parametric uncertainties of the investigated power system, considering thirteen cases, is carried out. The simulation results indicate that the contribution of the BA tuned the proposed fuzzy control structures in alleviating the overshoot, undershoot, and the settling time of the frequency in both areas and the tie-line power oscillations. Based on the obtained results, it is revealed that the lowest drop of the frequency in area one is −0.0414 Hz, which is achieved by the proposed Fuzzy PIDF tuned by the BA. It is also divulged that the proposed techniques, as was evidenced by their performance, offer a good transient response, a considerable capability for disturbance rejection, and an insensitivity towards the parametric uncertainty of the controlled system.
