Background/Objectives: Scutiger ningshanensis (Fang, 1985) is an endemic Chinese amphibian species within the genus Scutiger (Megophryidae). Despite its ecological significance, its mitochondrial genome architecture and evolutionary relationships remain poorly understood. Given the high structural variability in Megophryidae mitogenomes and unresolved phylogenetic patterns in Scutiger, this study aims to (1) characterize the complete mitogenome of S. ningshanensis, (2) analyze its molecular evolution, and (3) clarify its phylogenetic position and divergence history within Megophryidae. Methods: The complete mitochondrial genome was sequenced and annotated, followed by analyses of nucleotide composition, codon usage bias, and selection pressures (Ka/Ks ratios). Secondary structures of rRNAs and tRNAs were predicted, and phylogenetic relationships were reconstructed using maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods. Divergence times were estimated using molecular clock analysis. Results: The mitogenome of S. ningshanensis is 17,282 bp long, encoding 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs, and a control region, with a notable AT bias (61.05%) with nucleotide compositions of T (32.51%), C (24.64%), G (14.3%), and A (28.54%). All tRNAs exhibited cloverleaf structures except trnS1, which lacked a DHU stem. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the monophyly of Scutiger, forming a sister clade to Oreolalax and Leptobrachium, and that S. ningshanensis and S. liubanensis are sister species with a close evolutionary relationship. Positive selection was detected in Atp8 (Ka/Ks > 1), suggesting adaptation to plateau environments, while other PCGs underwent purifying selection (Ka/Ks < 1). Divergence time estimation placed the origin of Megophryidae at~47.97 MYA (Eocene), with S. ningshanensis diverging~32.67 MYA (Oligocene). Conclusions: This study provides the first comprehensive mitogenomic characterization of S. ningshanensis, revealing its evolutionary adaptations and phylogenetic placement. The findings enhance our understanding of Megophryidae’s diversification and offer a genomic foundation for future taxonomic and conservation studies. Full article

Emerging infectious diseases such as chytridiomycosis and ranavirosis, caused by Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and ranavirus (RV), respectively, are major contributors to global amphibian declines. Despite their significance, comprehensive data on the spatial epidemiology of these pathogens in South Korea remain limited. This study aimed to assess the nationwide co-occurrence and prevalence of Bd and RV across four anuran species in five administrative regions. Infection rates were analyzed in relation to host species, sex, and life history stage. Results indicated distinct prevalence patterns driven by ecological traits. Bd was predominantly detected in mountainous and coastal habitats, whereas RV was more common in flat inland areas. Both pathogens exhibited peak occurrence in central regions, likely reflecting seasonal transmission dynamics rather than stable endemic hotspots. The observed spatial heterogeneity appears to be influenced by pathogen-specific thermal tolerance and host ecology. These findings underscore the importance of understanding host–pathogen–environment interactions for effective disease surveillance and management. Continuous monitoring and integrative ecological approaches are essential to mitigate pathogen-induced biodiversity loss and to inform amphibian conservation strategies in East Asia. Full article

Ancient Lineages of the Western and Central Palearctic: Mapping Indicates High Endemism in Mediterranean and Arid Regions

The Palearctic region is characterised by high endemism in the west and east, and a low endemism centre. The endemic lineages occurring at the two ends are largely distinct, and eastern endemics are typically associated with humid climates and forests, representing the start of a continuum from temperate to tropical forest groups and leading to Indo-Malay endemics. In contrast, western Palearctic endemics are typically associated with arid or seasonally dry (Mediterranean) climates and vegetation. Those lineages occurring in the central Palearctic are typically of western origin. Here, we use phylogenetic age (older than 34 million years (My)) to define a list of tetrapod and vascular plant lineages endemic to the western and central Palearctic, map their distributions at the ecoregion scale, and combine these maps to illustrate and understand lineage richness and endemism patterns. Sixty-three ancient lineages were recovered, approximately half of them reptiles, with several herbaceous and shrubby angiosperms, amphibians, and rodents, and single lineages of woody conifers, insectivores, and birds. Overall, we show high lineage richness in the western Mediterranean, eastern Mediterranean, and Iran, with the highest endemism values recorded in the western Mediterranean (southern Iberian Peninsula, southern France). This paints a picture of ancient lineage survival in areas of consistently dry climate since the Eocene, but also in association with persistent water availability (amphibians in the western Mediterranean). The almost complete absence of ancient endemic bird lineages is unusual and perhaps unique among the world’s biogeographic regions. The factors accounting for these patterns include climate since the end of the Eocene, micro-habitats and micro-climates (of mountain terrain), refugia, and patchiness and isolation (of forests). Despite their aridity adaptations, some of the lineages listed here may be tested under anthropogenic climatic change, although some may extend into the eastern Palearctic. We recommend using these lineages as flagships for conservation in the study region, where their uniqueness and antiquity deserve greater recognition. Full article

With accelerating urbanization, urban expansion poses a significant threat to biodiversity, especially to endemic species, which are more sensitive to land use changes. However, to date, the impacts of future urban expansion at the species level in China on endemic species remain unclear. This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the impact of future urban expansion on endemic species in China under the framework of the shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs) from 2015 to 2050 using multiple indicators, including suitable habitat area changes, habitat fragmentation, and species extinction risk. The results show that from the perspective of suitable habitat loss and extinction risk, the negative impact of urban expansion in China from 2015 to 2050 may be greater for endemic species than for other species with a wide distribution. In addition, more than 56% of the affected species suffer from exacerbated habitat fragmentation. Biodiversity loss is more serious in regions with high endemic species richness and in urban agglomerations with rapid urban development in the future. Endemic birds and amphibians show high sensitivity to threats of urban expansion from various perspectives. This study provides a basis for biodiversity conservation, guiding the balance between urban development and biodiversity protection. Full article

The Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO) is a biogeographic province of Mexico that serves as a corridor for the northward expansion of subtropical species, while also acting as a barrier for the movement of species between western and eastern Mexico. The SMO houses 57 species of amphibians and 160 species of reptiles, representing 19.4% of the total number of amphibian and reptile species found in Mexico. Ten amphibian and thirteen reptile species are endemic to the SMO, and >50% of amphibian and reptile species found in the SMO are endemic to Mexico. Five amphibian species and three reptile species are listed in a category of conservation concern in the IUCN Red List. Specific threats include habitat loss, logging, mining, pollution, and climate change. The SMO shares a significant percentage of its species with neighboring provinces. In the cluster analysis for amphibians, a group comprising the SMO, the Pacific Lowlands, and the Chihuahuan Desert is linked to the Transvolcanic Belt. For reptiles, two distinct groups emerge: one including the SMO and the Chihuahuan Desert and one including the Transvolcanic Belt and the Pacific Lowlands. In conclusion, the rich biodiversity of the SMO, along with its role as both a corridor and barrier for species distribution, highlights the importance of targeted conservation efforts to mitigate the various threats facing this biogeographically significant province. The herpetofaunal diversity of northwestern Mexico, encompassing the Californian, Baja California, and Sonoran Desert biogeographic provinces, is characterized by relatively low species richness but a high degree of endemism. This region, particularly the islands of the Gulf of California, is recognized as a biodiversity hotspot. However, amphibian and reptile species in this area, especially those on the Gulf islands, are facing significant threats to their survival, including non-native species, habitat loss, and climate change. These factors pose considerable challenges to their conservation. In this study, we compiled updated lists of amphibian and reptile species across these three provinces, assessed their conservation status, identified the threats they face, and compared them with those in neighboring biogeographic provinces. Our analysis recorded a total of 228 species, comprising 29 amphibians and 199 reptiles, with a notable proportion of endemics, particularly in Baja California. Amphibians, due to the region’s arid conditions, are underrepresented and generally face a lower level of conservation concern. In contrast, reptiles, especially those on the islands, are at higher risk, primarily due to habitat loss, invasive species, and climate change. Of the 228 species, one amphibian and 21 reptiles are classified in a category of conservation concern (Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. In addition, 47 species (one amphibian and 46 reptiles) are listed as threatened (A) or at risk of extinction (P) by the Secretaría del Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT). These findings emphasize the urgent need for conservation strategies, particularly for island reptile species, that involve collaboration among scientists, local communities, and federal and state authorities to address these threats and safeguard the region’s herpetofauna. Similarity analysis revealed significant ecological connectivity among the amphibian and reptile communities across the three provinces. The similarity in species between the Californian, Baja California, and Sonoran Desert provinces highlights the role of historical climatic events, geographic barriers, and ecological factors in shaping species distributions of amphibians and reptiles in northwestern Mexico. The Balsas Basin (BB) is a biogeographic province in south-central Mexico that straddles the Mexican Transition Zone and the Neotropical region. We provide a list of the amphibian and reptile species of the BB based on a detailed review and update of recent species lists of its constituent states. The BB is home to 51 native amphibian and 155 native reptile species, which represent 14.7% of the herpetofauna of Mexico. No amphibian and six reptile species are endemic to the BB. Six species of amphibians and seven of reptiles are categorized as being of conservation concern status (vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered) on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List. The main threat these species face is habitat loss due to urbanization, agriculture, and pollution. The herpetofauna of the BB shows significant overlap with neighboring provinces. The composition of amphibian species in the BB is closest to that of the Pacific Lowlands, whereas the composition of reptile species is closest to the Sierra Madre del Sur and the Transvolcanic Belt. These findings suggest that while the BB supports significant amphibian and reptile diversity, its conservation importance may be limited due to the low levels of endemism and the relatively small proportion of species at risk. The Pacific Lowlands (PL) of Mexico hosts a rich diversity of amphibians and reptiles, comprising 326 native species (76 amphibians and 250 reptiles) across 45 families. This region is significant from a biodiversity standpoint, accounting for 23.3% of Mexico’s total amphibian and reptile species, with 30 species being endemic to the PL. Notably, the PL ranks sixth in amphibian and reptile diversity among Mexico’s fourteen biogeographic provinces. The species composition indicates a complex biogeographic relationship for the province, which shares the highest percentages of species with the neighboring Transition Zone provinces, while also acting as a vital corridor for species adapted to varied environmental conditions. Despite its diversity, 24 species in the PL are of conservation concern, highlighting threats from habitat loss, urbanization, and the impacts of introduced species in the province. Our findings underscore the ecological significance of the PL and the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect its unique biodiversity. Full article

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) aims to prevent the overexploitation of species by controlling their trade. However, there is currently no international regulatory framework to protect the trade of non-CITES species. We examined the LEMIS database, online trade, and scientific literature with the aim of identifying and compiling a list of South African native species traded as pets and wildlife products. We found that there are 223 non-CITES species traded as wildlife products and 95 species traded as pets. Mammals and birds were the most traded taxa for wildlife products, while reptiles and amphibians were mostly traded as pets. At the least, species traded as wildlife products and pets are currently not facing extinction, as most are categorized as Least Concern. However, some endemic species have an unknown population size, with Sclerophrys pantherina and Neamblysomus gunningi being Endangered. The international pet trade involves 10 countries, with the USA, the Czech Republic, and the UK being the largest importers. The trade of species as wildlife products involves 20 countries, with the USA being the major importer. This study emphasizes the necessity of strict regulations and international cooperation to control the wildlife trade effectively. Full article

This article provides the first data on amphibian diversity in the Yoko Forest Reserve, located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. During twenty-four field sampling campaigns organized over a period of twelve months, amphibians were collected from nocturnal surveys supported by three techniques: visual spotting using a headlamp, systematic searching of habitats and acoustic hearing of vocalizations. A total of 5707 amphibians in 10 families, 17 genera and 33 species were recorded throughout the study area. The Hyperoliidae and Arthroleptidae families were the most diverse, with Amnirana albolabris (Ranidae) the most abundant species, followed by Phrynobatrachus auritus (Phrynobatrachidae). By contrast, Afrixalus quadrivittatus, A. equatorialis, Arthroleptis tuberosus, A. variabilis, Cryptothylax greshoffi, Hyperolius langi, H. ocellatus, H. parallelus, Hyperolius sp., Hoplobatrachus occipitalis, Kassina maculosa, Leptopelis calcaratus, Nectophryne batesii, Phrynobatrachus perpalmatus, Sclerophrys gracilipes and S. gutturalis were less frequent. For the first time, Amietia nutti and Kassina maculosa have been reported in Congolese forests. Amphibian species known from the YFRE are widely distributed in Central African forests, and particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where A. equatorialis, H. langi, H. parallelus and Ptychadena christyi are endemic. Amphibians serve as reliable indicators of ecosystem health and are the most threatened group of vertebrates. Studies on their spatial distribution pattern and threats are crucial to formulate conservation strategies. Gongga Mountains, with a peak at 7509 m a.s.l. and running latitudinally, are in the center of the Hengduan Mountains Range and at the eastern steep edge of the Qinghai–Xizang Plateau, providing heterogeneous habitats and varied niches for amphibians. In this study, we combined 83 days of field work with information from 3894 museum specimens that were collected over the past 80 years, and identified twenty amphibian species belonging to seven families and twelve genera by morphology. Of these species, seven were listed in the threatened categories of the Red List of China’s Biodiversity and thirteen were endemic to China. Ten species were found on the plateau side (western slope) and eleven species were found on the other side close to the Sichuan Basin (eastern slope). Only one species was found on both sides, indicating different community structures horizontally. The species richness was unimodal vertically and peaking at mid elevation on both sides, with the maximum number (ten vs. nine) of species occurring at 3300–3700 vs. 1700–1900 m a.s.l. and in different types of vegetation. The elevation span and body length of species distributed on both slopes did not show significant differences. These findings help to understand the horizontal and vertical distribution pattern of amphibian diversity, laying a foundation for future biogeographical and conservation research in this area. Frog virus 3 (FV3) in the genus Ranavirus of the family Iridoviridae causes mass mortality in both anurans and urodeles worldwide; however, the phylogenetic origin of FV3-like ranaviruses is not well established. In Asia, three FV3-like ranaviruses have been reported in farmed populations of amphibians and reptiles. Here, we report the first case of endemic FV3-like ranavirus infections in the Korean clawed salamander Onychodactylus koreanus, caught in wild mountain streams in the Republic of Korea (ROK), through whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Two isolated FV3-like ranaviruses (Onychodactylus koreanus ranavirus, OKRV1 and 2) showed high similarity with the Rana grylio virus (RGV, 91.5%) and Rana nigromaculata ranavirus (RNRV, 92.2%) but relatively low similarity with the soft-shelled turtle iridovirus (STIV, 84.2%) in open reading frame (ORF) comparisons. OKRV1 and 2 formed a monophyletic clade with previously known Asian FV3-like ranaviruses, a sister group of the New World FV3-like ranavirus clade. Our results suggest that OKRV1 and 2 are FV3-like ranaviruses endemic to the ROK, and RGV and RNRV might also be endemic strains in China, unlike previous speculation. The Mexican Republic ranks fifth in the world in terms of amphibian diversity, and within Mexico, the state of Oaxaca has the greatest amphibian richness and endemism. Unfortunately, various factors, such as land use change and global warming, have caused a global crisis that threatens the conservation of this class. In the face of these threats, an analysis of beta diversity provides information that can be applied to conservation strategies, since its study reveals the spatial scaling of diversity loss and clarifies the mechanisms of regional diversity maintenance. In this work, we analyzed the beta diversity at the species and higher taxa level (order, family, subfamily, genus and species) for the amphibians of Oaxaca and their replacement components and the differences in richness for anurans and caudates separately between physiographic subprovinces. Very high beta diversity was recorded, with higher diversity occurring among caudates (0.92) than among anurans (0.84). Species replacement was the component that most contributed to this result, and the subprovinces with substantial environmental differences had the most dissimilar amphibian communities. The results of this study show the need to implement conservation strategies in subprovinces with high amphibian richness and endemism levels, following the example of Sierra Madre de Oaxaca (SMO), where local communities have developed conservation actions in most of the territory. Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve (JNNR) is a renowned World Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO-designated World Nature Heritage Site. The age structure and body size of a population are crucial for assessing the quality of habitats in which a population lives and are essential for the vertebrate conservation and management, especially for amphibians. Unfortunately, information about the life history traits of amphibians is currently unavailable in JNNR. Herein, we first estimated the age structure and body size of Rana kukunoris, which is endemic to the Eastern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. Then, we compared our data with 28 reported populations along an elevation gradient (1797–3450 m) and investigated how life history traits respond to climatic variations. Our results indicated the following: (1) For individuals from JNNR, the maximum longevity is 8 years, age at sexual maturity (ASM) is 2 years, suggesting a favorable ecological environment in JNNR. Notably, females are significantly larger than males due to the age factor. (2) The average age and ASM show a positive correlation with elevation. However, when the elevation exceeds 3000 m, the average SVL initially increases and then decreases due to the harsh environmental conditions at higher elevation. (3) Temperature and/or UV-B have a significant impact on the average age, ASM, and average SVL variations of R. kukunoris, suggesting adaptive potential of this species via life history variations in light of environmental changes. These accounts provide antecedent information about the life history traits of amphibians in JNNR, and provide insights into the driving factors of the life history variations of the plateau brown frog. The harmonious landscape of Montagne des Français is a protected area in the far north of Madagascar. Our herpetofauna surveys were conducted on the eastern and western slopes according to habitat variations within the massif for 2014 and 2020. Our research updates the herpetofauna species richness, spatial distribution ranges, and ecological guilds within the protected area. We used direct opportunistic observations, systematic refuge examinations, and pitfall traps with drift fences at three sites to sample animals. Nineteen amphibian and fifty reptile species were recorded during this study. Three amphibian species and one reptile species, in addition to the snake Langaha pseudoalluaudi, last recorded in 2007, were discovered at Montagne des Français. Here, we present a database update for the herpetofauna species from Montagne des Français and provide a specific morphological description of the morphospecies considered as a new extension or localized distribution. This new database can help site managers develop new strategic conservation plans in response to habitat modification. Full article
