Laser cleaning technology has been increasingly applied in the removal of damaged protective coatings from aircraft components due to its environmental friendliness and high efficiency. Appropriate laser cleaning process parameters improve cleaning efficiency while preventing substrate damage. In this study, a Gaussian continuous-wave laser was used to remove the 120 μm coating on the surface of Ti6Al4V alloy. The influence of laser power (100 W to 200 W) and scanning speed (520 mm/min to 610 mm/min) on the paint removal effect was explored based on paint removal rate, surface roughness, microstructural evolution, and the hardness’ change in the direction of heat transfer. The results reveal that optimal paint removal parameters are achieved at a laser power of 100 W with a scanning speed of 550 mm/min. The surface roughness of the sample after paint removal (55 nm) is similar to that of the original substrate (56 nm). Through EBSD analysis, the influence of laser thermal accumulation on the microstructure of the substrate is relatively small. The average hardness of the cross-section after cleaning was 347 HV, which was only 3.41% higher than that of the original substrate. This confirms that parameter-controlled laser cleaning can effectively remove ~120 μm thick paint layers without inflicting damage on the substrate. Full article

Three-dimensional (3D) radar imaging is essential for target detection and measurement of scattering characteristics. Cylindrical scanning, a prevalent spatial sampling technique, provides benefits in engineering applications and has been extensively utilized for assessing the radar stealth capabilities of large aircraft. Traditional cylindrical scanning generally utilizes highly sampled full-coverage techniques, leading to an excessive quantity of sampling points and diminished image efficiency, constraining its use for quick detection applications. This work presents an efficient 3D sampling strategy that integrates vertical linear scanning with horizontal rotating motion to overcome these restrictions. A joint angle–space sampling model is developed, and geometric constraints are implemented to enhance the scanning trajectory. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared to conventional techniques, the proposed method achieves a 94% reduction in the scanning duration while maintaining a peak sidelobe level ratio (PSLR) of 12 dB. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that 3D imaging may be accomplished solely by a “V”-shaped trajectory, efficiently determining the minimal possible sampling aperture. This approach offers novel insights and theoretical backing for the advancement of high-efficiency, low-redundancy 3D radar imaging systems. Full article

The increasing pace of climate-driven changes in forest ecosystems calls for reliable remote sensing techniques for quantifying above-ground carbon storage. In this article, we compare the methodology and results of traditional field surveys, mobile laser scanning, optical drone imaging and photogrammetry, and both drone-based and light aircraft-based aerial laser scanning to determine forest stand parameters, which are suitable to estimate carbon stock. Measurements were conducted at four designated sampling points established during a large-scale project in deciduous and coniferous tree stands of the Dudles Forest, Hungary. The results of the surveys were first compared spatially and quantitatively, followed by a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The mobile laser scanner proved to be the most accurate, while optical surveying—enhanced with a new diameter measurement methodology based on detecting stem positions from the photogrammetric point cloud and measuring the diameter directly on the orthorectified images—also delivered promising results. Aerial laser scanning was the least accurate but provided coverage over large areas. Based on the results, we recommend adapting our carbon stock estimation methodology primarily to mobile laser scanning surveys combined with aerial laser scanned data. Full article

Titanium has specific uses due to its cost, which is counterbalanced by its extraordinary chemical and physical properties. Submarine hulls and nuclear power plant pipes have been made of titanium since the last century due to its high corrosion resistance, and the aircraft industry has also exploited its remarkable properties, such as lightness and high melting point. Surface modifications by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) may increase its corrosion resistance, roughness and wettability. Furthermore, greater corrosion resistance is a rather attractive property in nuclear power plant pipes, although the increased roughness and wettability are disadvantageous downsides as they favor the attachment of marine organisms. Nonetheless these new features are particularly interesting for biomedical applications. In this study, PEO films were produced on commercially pure titanium substrates using different electrolytes, one of which contains zirconium dioxide and the other consisting of tantalum pentoxide, in addition to a third one composed of a combination of the former two. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses were performed in addition to contact angle and roughness measurements, and electrochemical tests were carried out to comparatively characterize the different film compositions. The results revealed that excellent corrosion resistance was achieved by mixing oxides in the electrolyte. Full article

To address the issue of low accuracy and stability in traditional Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)-based defect depth prediction for civil aircraft composites, we propose an improved Feature Enhancement Network (FEN)-CNN-Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) impact damage depth prediction method. By integrating terahertz (THz) time-domain, frequency-domain, and absorbance spectroscopy with Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) depth measurements, the correlation between THz spectral features and impact damage defect depth is systematically elucidated, thereby constructing a “THz features-depth” dataset. Furthermore, by leveraging the FEN model’s feature enhancement and denoising capabilities, along with the BiLSTM model’s bidirectional sequence modeling capability, the underlying relationship between terahertz spectral features and defect depth is deeply learned. This approach improves the stability and accuracy of spectral feature extraction by the CNN model under complex conditions. Ablation experiments revealed the improved model, compared to traditional CNN, reduced Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Mean Squared Error (MSE), and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) by 43.08%, 44.4%, 57.18%, and 34.56%, respectively. Additionally, it decreased the Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) by 32.14%, and increased the Coefficient of Determination (R2) by 6.8%. Comparative experiments demonstrated the proposed model achieved an MSE of 0.0075 and an R2 of 0.9539, outperforming other models. This study provides a novel method for precise low-velocity impact damage assessment in carbon fiber reinforced composites, enhancing safety evaluation for civil aircraft composite structures and contributing to aviation safety. This study investigates the degradation of aircraft paint and its impact on aerodynamic performance, using the PZL M-20 “Mewa” aircraft as a case study. Paint samples were collected from both damaged and intact areas of the airframe and analyzed using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and aerodynamic testing. One of the major challenges addressed in this work was the non-destructive identification of chemical aging effects in operational paint coatings and their correlation with aerodynamic behavior. The application of EPR spectroscopy in conjunction with real-world aerodynamic testing on naturally degraded surfaces represents an innovative approach that offers both scientific insight and practical guidance for maintenance practices. The results indicate significant deterioration in aerodynamic characteristics—such as increased drag and reduced lift—due to coating damage, particularly around riveted and bolted joints. EPR spectra revealed a notable increase in the density of unpaired electron spins in aged coatings, confirming ongoing oxidative degradation processes. While this study was limited to a single aircraft, the findings highlight the critical importance of regular inspection and maintenance of paint coatings to ensure flight safety and operational efficiency. The integral welded panel represents a highly promising aircraft structural component, owing to its lightweight design and reduced connector requirements. However, the complexity of its welded structure results in the formation of cross-welded joints. This study systematically investigated the mechanical properties of the cross-welded joints through tensile tests across different welded regions, which were complemented by fracture morphology examination via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The residual stress distribution was characterized using X-ray diffraction, while electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis was used to elucidate the relationship between residual stress and microstructure. Key findings revealed that the cross-welded zone exhibited lower yield strength and ductility than the single-welded zone, and the advancing heat-affected zone demonstrated superior tensile properties relative to the retreating side. Residual stress analysis showed that the cross-welded joint lacked the “double peak” profile characteristic and displayed lower maximum residual stress than the single-welded joint. EBSD analysis indicated significant grain elongation in the cross-welded zone due to mechanical forces during the welding process, resulting in higher dislocation density and deformation, corresponding with elevated residual stress levels. The Fe-36Ni alloy, with ultra-low thermal expansion and stable properties, is essential for aerospace remote sensors and aircraft load-bearing structures, widely used in aerospace. Additive Manufacturing, an emerging rapid prototyping technology with short cycles, high efficiency, and flexibility, addresses complex structural fabrication challenges. While selective laser melting (SLM) enables complex geometry fabrication, post-process treatments (e.g., annealing-induced homogenization, thermal aging for stress relief, surface polishing) remain critical for attaining metallurgical stability in as-built components. The impact of different laser scanning speeds (500 mm/s, 1000 mm/s, 1500 mm/s, 2000 mm/s) on the microstructure and mechanical and thermal expansion properties of the Fe-36Ni alloy fabricated by selective laser melting was studied. The results indicate that all Fe-36Ni alloys predominantly exhibit the γ-phase. Interestingly, a small amount of α precipitates was also observed, which is primarily attributed to the formation of a supercooled region. Notably, at a scanning speed of 1000 mm/s, the Fe-36Ni alloy samples exhibit optimal mechanical properties, with a tensile strength of 439 MPa and an elongation of 49.0%. This improvement is primarily attributed to the enhanced molding quality and grain refinement. The minimum coefficient of thermal expansion occurs at a scanning speed of 2000 mm/s, likely due to the elevated defect density. Full article

In recent decades, the application of composite materials in aerostructures has significantly increased, with modern commercial aircraft progressively replacing aluminum alloys with composite components. This shift is exemplified by comparing the material compositions of the Boeing 777 and the Boeing 787 (Dreamliner). The Boeing 777 incorporates approximately 50% aluminum alloy and 12% composite materials, whereas the Dreamliner reverses this ratio, utilizing around 50% composites and 12% aluminum alloy. While metals remain advantageous due to their availability and ease of machining, composites offer greater potential for property tailoring to meet specific performance requirements. They also provide superior strength-to-weight ratios and enhanced resistance to corrosion and fatigue. To ensure the reliability of composites in aerospace applications, comprehensive testing under various loading conditions, particularly impact, is essential. Impacts were performed on quasi-isotropic (QIT) carbon-fiber reinforced epoxy panels with stainless steel, round-nosed and flat-ended impactors with rubber discs of 1-, 1.5- and 2 mm thickness, adhered to the flat-ended impactor to simulate the transition between hard and soft impact loading conditions. QIT composite panels were tested in this research employing similar lay-ups often being implemented in aircraft wings and other structures. The rubber discs were applied in the flat-ended impactor case but not for the round-nosed impactor due to the limited adhesion between the rubber and the rounded stainless-steel surface. Impact energies of 7.5, 15 and 30 J were investigated, and the performance of the panels was evaluated using force-time and force-displacement data alongside post-impact ultrasonic C-scan imaging to assess the damaged area. Damage was observed at all three energy values for the round-nosed impacts but only at the highest impact energy when using the flat-ended impactor, leading to the hardness study with adhered rubber discs being performed at 30 J. The most noticeable difference with the addition of rubber discs was the reduction in the damage in the plies nearest the top (impacted) surface. This suggests that the rubber reduces the severity of the impact, but increasing the thickness of the rubber from 1 to 2 mm does not notably increase this effect. Indentation clearly plays a significant role in promoting delamination at low-impact energies for the round-nosed impactors. Full article

The 6061 aluminum alloy is extensively utilized in the production of aircraft components, valve parts, and maritime equipment, owing to its exceptional corrosion resistance, weldability, machinability, and anodic oxidation performance. This study investigates the effects of different heat treatment parameters on the mechanical properties of 6061 aluminum alloy. A series of orthogonal experiments were conducted, including quasi-static tensile tests using a QJBV212F-300KN universal testing machine following different solution and aging treatments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed for microstructural characterization, revealing the mechanisms by which different heat treatment conditions impact the alloy’s mechanical properties. The test results indicate that the plasticity of 6061 aluminum alloy improves progressively within the temperature range of 510 °C to 540 °C. However, when the solution treatment temperature is elevated to 570 °C, significant grain coarsening occurs, leading to increased brittleness at the grain boundaries and reduced plasticity. Additionally, the elongation of 6061 aluminum alloy initially decreases and then increases as the aging time increases. Based on the experiments, a Hansel–Spittel constitutive model was developed, incorporating temperature, strain rate, and strain effects to accurately predict the flow stress of 6061 aluminum alloy under varying heat treatment conditions. The aviation industry currently faces several challenges in inspecting and diagnosing aircraft structures. Current aircraft inspection methods still need to be fully automated, making early detection and precise sizing of defects difficult. Researchers have expressed concerns about current aircraft inspections, citing safety, maintenance costs, and reliability issues. The next generation of aircraft inspection leverages semi-autonomous and fully autonomous systems integrating robotic technologies with advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods. Active Thermography (AT) is an example of an NDT method widely used for non-invasive aircraft inspection to detect surface and near-surface defects, such as delamination, debonding, corrosion, impact damage, and cracks. It is suitable for both metallic and non-metallic materials and does not require a coupling agent or direct contact with the test piece, minimising contamination. Visual inspection using an RGB camera is another well-known non-contact NDT method capable of detecting surface defects. A newer option for NDT in aircraft maintenance is 3D scanning, which uses laser or LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technologies. This method offers several advantages, including non-contact operation, high accuracy, and rapid data collection. It is effective across various materials and shapes, enabling the creation of detailed 3D models. An alternative approach to laser and LiDAR technologies is photogrammetry. Photogrammetry is cost-effective in comparison with laser and LiDAR technologies. It can acquire high-resolution texture and colour information, which is especially important in the field of maintenance inspection. In this proposed approach, an automated vision-based damage evaluation system will be developed capable of detecting and characterising defects in metallic and composite aircraft specimens by analysing 3D data acquired using an RGB camera and a IRT camera through photogrammetry. Such a combined approach is expected to improve defect detection accuracy, reduce aircraft downtime and operational costs, improve reliability and safety and minimise human error. Full article

Side-Scan Sonar (SSS) is widely used in underwater rescue operations and the detection of seabed targets, such as shipwrecks, drowning victims, and aircraft. However, the quality of sonar images is often degraded by noise sources like reverberation and speckle noise, which complicate the extraction of effective features. Additionally, challenges such as limited sample sizes and class imbalances are prevalent in side-scan sonar image data. These issues directly impact the accuracy of deep learning-based target classification models for SSS images. To address these challenges, we propose a side-scan sonar image classification model based on joint image deblurring–denoising and a pre-trained feature fusion attention network. Firstly, by employing transform domain filtering in conjunction with upsampling and downsampling techniques, the joint image deblurring–denoising approach effectively reduces image noise while preserving and enhancing edge and texture features. Secondly, a feature fusion attention network based on transfer learning is employed for image classification. Through the transfer learning approach, a feature extractor based on depthwise separable convolutions and densely connected networks is trained to effectively address the challenge of limited training samples. Subsequently, a dual-path feature fusion strategy is utilized to leverage the complementary strengths of different feature extraction networks. Furthermore, by incorporating channel attention and spatial attention mechanisms, key feature channels and regions are adaptively emphasized, thereby enhancing the accuracy and robustness of image classification. Finally, the Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) technique is integrated into the proposed model to ensure interpretability and transparency. Experimental results show that our model achieves a classification accuracy of 96.80% on a side-scan sonar image dataset, confirming the effectiveness of this method for SSS image classification. Aircraft gas turbine blades operate in aggressive, generally oxidizing, atmospheres. A solution to mitigate the degradation and improve the performance of such components is the deposition of thermal barrier coatings systems (TBCs). High-velocity air fuel (HVAF) is a very efficient process for coating deposition in TBC systems, particularly for bond coats in aerospace applications. However, its low-temperature variant has received little attention in the literature and could be a promising alternative to limit oxidation during spraying when compared to conventional methods. This study has the main objective of analyzing how the geometry of the low-temperature HVAF gun influences the microstructure and the in-flight oxidation of MCrAlX coatings. To that end, a low-temperature HVAF torch is used to deposit MCrAlX coatings on a steel substrate with different nozzle lengths. In-flight particle diagnosis is used to measure the MCrAlX particle velocity, and to correlate to the nozzle geometry and to analyze its influence on the final coating. The microstructure of the coatings is assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the material oxidation is analyzed and measured on a field emission scanning transmission electron microscope (FE-STEM) equipped with focused ion beam (FIB) and by Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Precipitation-hardenable stainless steels (PHSSs) are widely used in various applications in the aerospace industry. PHSSs are used in various parts that need to combine mechanical properties with corrosion resistance when aircrafts are in corrosive environments. This study aimed to analyze the corrosion kinetics of CUSTOM 450 and AM 350 stainless steels that were passivated in acid baths for a period of 120 min at temperatures of 25 and 50 °C and then immersed in solutions containing 1 wt. % sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and 5 wt. % sodium chloride (NaCl). The electrochemical technique used was cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) based on ASTM G61-86. Microstructural characterization was performed via optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results revealed that the potentiodynamic polarization curves have two distinct corrosion mechanisms. The immersion of PHSSs in the H2SO4 solution produces an activation–passivation reaction. The NaCl solution has pseudopassivation (unstable passivation film). The values of the icorr current densities in the solutions of sodium chloride and sulfuric acids are between 10−3 and 10−5 mA/cm2; the stainless steels are susceptible to localized pitting corrosion in both test solutions, with positive hysteresis in the CPP. Fatigue Experiment and Failure Mechanism Analysis of Aircraft Titanium Alloy Wing–Body Connection Joint

Taking the titanium alloy wing–body connection joint at the rear beam of a certain type of aircraft as the research object, this study analyzed the failure mechanism and verified the structural safety of the wing–body connection joint under actual flight loads. Firstly, this study verified the validity of the loading system and the measuring system in the test system through the pre-test, and the repeatability of the test was analyzed for error to ensure the accuracy of the experimental data. Then, the test piece was subjected to 400,000 random load tests of flight takeoffs and landings, 100,000 Class A load tests, and ground–air–ground load tests, and the test piece fractured under the ground–air–ground load tests. Lastly, the mechanism analysis and structural safety verification of the fatigue fracture of the joints were carried out by using a stereo microscope and scanning electron microscope. The results show that fretting fatigue is the main driving force for crack initiation, and the crack shows significant fatigue damage characteristics in the stable growth stage and follows Paris’ law. Entering the final fracture region, the joint mainly experienced ductile fracture, with typical plastic deformation features such as dimples and tear ridges before fracture. The fatigue crack growth behavior of the joint was quantitatively analyzed using Paris’ law, and the calculated crack growth period life was 207,374 loadings. This result proves that the crack initiation life accounts for 95.19% of the full life cycle, which is much higher than the design requirement of 400,000 landings and takeoffs, indicating that the structural design of this test piece is on the conservative side and meets the requirements of aircraft operational safety. This research is of great significance in improving the safety and reliability of aircraft structures. Full article
