This study explores sustainable rural tourism entrepreneurship within the Urlaub am Bauernhof (UaB) cooperative network in Austria, offering an integrated model that unites financial, social, environmental, institutional, and marketing dimensions. Employing exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) on data from 393 farm-based accommodation stakeholders, this research identifies sustainable entrepreneurship as comprising six interconnected dimensions: Economic Resilience and Diversification, Sociocultural Integration, Environmental and Regional Commitment, Market Visibility and Strategic Communication, Quality Assurance and Institutional Support, and Perceived Value and Branding. This multidimensional and hierarchically structured framework reflects the complex yet coherent nature of sustainability-driven entrepreneurship in cooperative tourism networks. The findings confirm the multidimensional nature of sustainable entrepreneurship and support the hypothesized structural relationships. The UaB network is presented as a transferable model that demonstrates how cooperative frameworks can enhance sustainability, regional identity, and rural revitalization, offering valuable insights and practical guidance for rural regions in the Western Balkans, where economic challenges, depopulation, and underdeveloped tourism infrastructure prevail. By illustrating a successful cooperative approach rooted in sustainability and regional identity, this study contributes to policy-making aimed at fostering resilient, culturally rich, and environmentally responsible rural tourism entrepreneurship in transitioning contexts. The study of bacterial defense mechanisms against phages is becoming increasingly relevant due to their impact on the effectiveness of phage therapy. Employing a multifaceted approach that combines bioinformatics, molecular microbiology, TEM microscopy, and conventional microbiology techniques, here, we identify the ibfA gene as a novel defense factor targeting the virulent phage UAB_Phi20, acquired by Salmonella Typhimurium through lateral transfer on the IncI1α conjugative plasmid pUA1135 after oral phage therapy in broilers. IbfA, a two-domain protein containing ATPase and TOPRIM domains, significantly reduces UAB_Phi20 productivity, as indicated by decreased EOP, ECOI, and a diminished burst size, potentially reducing cellular viability without causing observable lysis. Our results indicate that IbfA enhances the transcription of early genes, including the antirepressor ant, which inhibits the C2 repressor of the lytic cycle. This may cause an imbalance in Cro/C2 concentration, leading to the observed reduction in the transcription of late genes encoding structural and cellular lysis proteins, and resulting in the abortion of UAB_Phi20 infection. Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most common pediatric primary liver tumor. About 20% of affected children have pulmonary metastasis at presentation. Survival rates for these children are dismal, not exceeding 25%. To study this subset of patients, we sequenced a metastatic HB cell line, HLM_2, and identified downregulation of the Liver X Receptor (LXR)/Retinoid X Receptor (RXR) pathway. LXR/RXRs function as transcriptional regulators that influence genes implicated in HB development, including the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. We assessed the effects of a novel LXR/RXR agonist, UAB116, on metastatic HB, hypothesizing that this compound would affect genes governing the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, decreasing the metastatic phenotype of HLM_2 metastatic HB cells. We evaluated its effects on viability, proliferation, stemness, clonogenicity, and motility, and performed RNA sequencing to study differential gene regulation. Treatment with UAB116 for 72 h decreased HLM_2 proliferation, stemness, clonogenicity, and invasion. RNA sequencing identified an eight-fold increase in TRIM29, a gene known to inhibit β-catenin, in cells treated with UAB116. Administration of the LXR/RXR agonist, UAB116, reduces proliferation, stemness, and invasiveness of metastatic HB cells, potentially by upregulation of TRIM29, a known modulator of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, providing support for further exploration of LXR/RXR agonism as a therapeutic strategy for metastatic HB. Background: Treating an underactive bladder (UAB) is challenging. Previously, we introduced a more precise method of transvaginal ultrasound-guided botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) injection into the external urethral sphincter as a treatment option for patients with UABs. Although many patients experience good results, those with an UAB and excessive residual urine still require catheterization. Therefore, we developed a new method that combines transvaginal ultrasound-guided BoNT-A injection with a transurethral bladder neck incision. Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 16 patients who experienced symptoms of UAB and chronic urine retention. The treatment consisted of a combination of transvaginal ultrasound-guided BoNT-A injection and a transurethral incision of the bladder neck (TUI-BN). The primary objective was to assess the efficacy of this combined treatment in improving symptoms in women with UABs. Results: Our study demonstrated significant improvements after treatment, including increased voiding volume, decreased post-void residual (PVR) urine, and improved voiding efficiency. The frequency of clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) decreased at 1 and 3 months post-surgery, along with improvements in the AUA symptoms score and the Patient Perception of Bladder Condition (PPBC) score. Conclusions: Our study showed significant improvements in the surgical treatment of UABs using a combination of transvaginal ultrasound-guided BoNT-A and TUI-BN. Full article

Background: Esophageal organoids from a variety of pathologies including cancer are grown in Advanced Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium-Nutrient Mixture F12 (hereafter ADF). However, the currently available ADF-based formulations are suboptimal for normal human esophageal organoids, limiting the ability to compare normal esophageal organoids with those representing a given disease state. Methods: We have utilized immortalized normal human esophageal epithelial cell (keratinocyte) lines EPC1 and EPC2 and endoscopic normal esophageal biopsies to generate three-dimensional (3D) organoids. To optimize the ADF-based medium, we evaluated the requirement of exogenous epidermal growth factor (EGF) and inhibition of transforming growth factor-(TGF)-β receptor-mediated signaling, both key regulators of the proliferation of human esophageal keratinocytes. We have modeled human esophageal epithelial pathology by stimulating esophageal 3D organoids with interleukin (IL)-13, an inflammatory cytokine, or UAB30, a novel pharmacological activator of retinoic acid signaling. Results: The formation of normal human esophageal 3D organoids was limited by excessive EGF and intrinsic TGFβ-receptor-mediated signaling. Optimized HOME0 improved normal human esophageal organoid formation. In the HOME0-grown organoids, IL-13 and UAB30 induced epithelial changes reminiscent of basal cell hyperplasia, a common histopathologic feature in broad esophageal disease conditions including eosinophilic esophagitis. Conclusions: HOME0 allows modeling of the homeostatic differentiation gradient and perturbation of the human esophageal epithelium while permitting a comparison of organoids from mice and other organs grown in ADF-based media. The combination of vitamin A and D derivatives with classical chemotherapeutic treatments results in more satisfactory outcomes. The use of drug combinations, such as 9cUAB130 with carboplatin and cisplatin with TAC-101, shows enhanced cytotoxic effects and reductions in ovarian tumor volume compared to single-drug treatments. Combining cisplatin with calcitriol and progesterone increases VDR expression, potentially enhancing the effectiveness of anticancer therapy in ovarian cancer. The effectiveness of vitamin derivatives in anticancer treatment may vary depending on the characteristics of the tumor and the cell line from which it originated. An increase in thiamine intake of one unit is associated with an 18% decrease in HPV infection. Higher intake of vitamin C by 50 mg/day is linked to a lower risk of cervical neoplasia. Beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E are associated with risk reductions of 12%, 15%, and 9% in endometrial cancer, respectively. A balanced daily intake of vitamins is important, as both deficiency and excess can influence cancer development. It has been observed that there is a U-shaped relationship between group B vitamins and metabolic markers and clinical outcomes. Full article

Underactive bladder (UAB) is a prevalent but under-researched lower urinary tract symptom that typically occurs alongside detrusor underactivity (DU). Unlike UAB, DU is a urodynamic diagnosis which the International Continence Society (ICS) defines as “a contraction of reduced strength and/or duration, resulting in prolonged bladder emptying and/or a failure to achieve complete bladder emptying within a normal time span”. Despite the widespread prevalence of UAB/DU, there are significant gaps in our understanding of its pathophysiological mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment compared with overactive bladder (OAB) and detrusor overactivity (DO). These gaps are such that clinicians regard UAB/DU as an incurable condition. In recent years, the understanding of UAB has increased. The definition of UAB has been clarified, and the diagnostic criteria for DU have been considered more comprehensively. Meanwhile, a number of non-invasive diagnostic methods have also been reported. Clinical trials involving novel drugs, electrical stimulation, and stem cell therapy have shown promising results. Therefore, this review summarizes recent reports on UAB and DU and highlights the latest advances in their diagnosis and treatment. Full article

Previously, the RXR agonist UAB126 demonstrated therapeutic potential to treat obese mice by controlling blood glucose levels (BGL) and altering the expression of genes associated with lipid metabolism and inflammatory response. The purpose of the study was to assess the effects of UAB126 on the progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in rodent models of type 1 diabetes (T1D), streptozotocin-induced, and type 2 diabetes (T2D), in db/db mice. UAB126 treatment was delivered either by oral gavage for 6 weeks or by topical application of eye drops for 2 weeks. At the end of the treatment, the retinal function of diabetic mice was assessed by electroretinography (ERG), and their retinal tissue was harvested for protein and gene expression analyses. Bone-marrow cells were isolated and differentiated into bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs). The glycolysis stress test and the 2-DG glucose uptake analysis were performed. Our results demonstrated that in the UAB126-treated diabetic BMDMs, the ECAR rate and the 2-DG uptake were improved as compared to untreated diabetic BMDMs. In UAB126-treated diabetic mice, hyperglycemia was reduced and associated with the preservation of ERG amplitudes and enhanced AMPK activity. Retinas from diabetic mice treated with topical UAB126 demonstrated an increase in Rxr and Ppar and the expression of genes associated with lipid metabolism. Altogether, our data indicate that RXR activation is beneficial to preclinical models of DR. Full article

Ultrasonic-assisted brazing (UAB) technology has been introduced to prepare the diamond/AlSi composite coating on Ti-6Al-4V substrate. The microstructure and wear properties of the coating were studied. The results showed that AlSi filler metal had a certain spreading and climbing phenomenon on the diamond surface, indicating a significant improvement in wettability between AlSi filler metal and diamond by ultrasonic-assisted brazing. Under ultrasound action, the microstructure of AlSi brazing alloy was greatly refined, and the Ti atoms in the Ti-6Al-4V substrate diffused to the interface between diamond and AlSi brazing alloy and formed TiC on diamond particles. There was no thermal damage to diamond particles when the brazing temperature was 750 °C. UAB improved the microhardness of the coating alloy matrix due to the increasing quantity and distribution range of TiAl3 as reinforced particles but had no obvious effect on the microhardness of the Ti-6Al-4V substrate. The wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V substrate with diamond/AlSi composite coating was promoted due to the dense diamond particles, the formed TiC on diamond particles, and the increase in microhardness of the alloy matrix of diamond/AlSi coating under ultrasound action. Appropriate Nitrogen Form and Application Rate Can Improve Yield and Quality of Autumn Tea with Drip Irrigation

Applying nitrogen fertilization is an important way to improve the yield and quality of autumn tea (Camellia sinensis L.), but the effects of nitrogen application rate and nitrogen form still remain unclear. Field experiments were conducted in a drip-irrigated tea garden in Rizhao City, China in 2020 and 2021. The effects of nitrogen application levels (N: 0 kg·hm−2, CK; N: 45 kg·hm−2, U1; 75 kg·hm−2, U2; and 105 kg·hm−2, U3) and nitrogen application forms (ammonium bicarbonate, AB; ammonium bicarbonate + urea, UAB; and urea, U) on soil moisture, as well as nitrogen spatiotemporal change, and autumn tea yield and quality, were studied. Results showed that applying ammonium bicarbonate or urea through a drip irrigation system can significantly increase the tea plant evapotranspiration and the autumn tea yield and quality (including free amino acids and tea polyphenols). With the same nitrogen application, the urea fertilization treatment had the higher ammonium nitrogen content within the 0–60 cm soil layer. The application form of nitrogen fertilizer had a significant impact on the yield of autumn tea, and the yield increasing ability was U > UAB > AB. The partial factor productivity of applied nitrogen under the AB treatment was the lowest. The yield-increasing effect of nitrogen fertilizer can be observed only 16–18 days after topdressing through the drip irrigation system. In 2020 and 2021, the yield of autumn tea under the U3 treatment increased by 40.6% and 23.0%, respectively, compared with the CK treatment. In conclusion, the topdressing with urea 105 kg·hm−2 with drip irrigation for tea plants in autumn is recommended. This recommendation will provide a theoretical basis for efficient irrigation and yield increase in tea gardens. Full article

The main problem presented in this paper is the safety inlet navigation of the waterway below the bridge in the city of Kaunas in Lithuania. The analyzed reach is located in the Nemunas river downstream of the Kaunas dam. It is a part of the waterway E–41 leading to the Klaipeda harbor on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. The work was initiated by the Lithuanian company UAB “Inžinerinis projektavimas” with funds from the project called European Union Trans-European Transport Network (EU TEN-T). The main requirement imposed along this reach is to keep sufficient depth even in the range of the lowest flows. The depth is sufficient if it is not lower than 1.15 m for minimum flows such as Q95% and Q95% with ice. The hydraulic conditions for maximum flow Q50%, Q5%, and Q1% are also taken into account for control because the threat of hydraulic jump generation was also noticed. The research is based on georeferenced data from public and non-public sources. The hydrologic data were received from the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service. The physical model was created in the Water Laboratory of the Department of Hydraulic and Sanitary Engineering at Poznan University of Life Sciences, Poland. The preprocessing of spatial data in ArcGIS 10.8.2 and rules of hydraulic similarity were implemented in the process of physical model preparation. Three experiments were conducted in the laboratory with scaled values of Q95%, Q5%, and Q1%. The measurements of the water surface and evaluations of the average velocity were used to validate the 2D numerical model prepared in HEC-RAS 6.3.1. The basic layers of the HEC-RAS model were preprocessed in ArcGIS 10.8.2 by ESRI company. The numerical model was implemented to test different values of unknown roughness of the channel bottom. The simulations were conducted for the real values of Q95% and Q95% with ice and Q50%. The results of the simulations were depth and Froude number maps. These maps were classified into zones of no risk, middle risk, and high risk. ArcGIS in the post-processing phase was applied to identify the locations of the hazards. The magnitude of risk was expressed in terms of minimum depth achieved, maximum Froude number, as well as the length of the reaches with high risk related to these two factors. The threat of hydraulic jump formation below the bridge was also noticed. Conducted results confirmed that the combination of hydrodynamic simulations and geoprocessing in the pre- and post-processing stages could be a powerful tool in hydraulic engineering analyses. Additionally, it is worth noting that numerical modeling enables a wider analysis of potential conditions than could be possible with a physical model only. Full article

Understanding the spatiotemporal changes in land use and land cover (LULC) in the watershed is crucial for maintaining the sustainability of land resources. This study intents to understand the historical (1972–2015) and future (2030–2060) spatiotemporal distribution of LULC changes in the Upper Awash Basin (UAB). The supervised Maximum Likelihood Classifier technique (MLC) was implemented for historical LULC classification. The Cellular Automata-Markov (CA–Markov) model was employed to project two scenarios of LULC, ‘business-as-usual’ (BAU) and ‘governance’ (Gov). Results from the historical LULC of the study area show that urban and cropland areas increased from 52.53 km2 (0.45%) to 354.14 km2 (3.01%) and 6040.75 km2 (51.25%) to 8472.45 km2 (71.97%), respectively. Whereas grassland, shrubland, and water bodies shrunk from 2052.08 km2 (17.41%) to 447.63 km2 (3.80%), 2462.99 km2 (20.89%) to 1399.49 km2 (11.89%) and 204.87 km2 (1.74%) to 152.44 km2 (1.29%), respectively, from 1972 to 2015. The historical LULC results indicated that the forest area was highly vulnerable and occupied by urban and cropland areas. The projected LULC under the BAU scenario shows substantial cropland and urban area expansion, increasing from 8472.45 km2 (71.97%) in 2015 to 9159.21 km2 (77.71%) in 2060 and 354.14 km2 (3.1%) in 2015, 1196.78 km2 (10.15%) in 2060, respectively, at the expense of vegetation cover. These results provide insight intothe LULC changes in the area, thus requiring urgent attention by watershed managers, policymakers, and stakeholders to provide sustainable practices for the UAB. Meanwhile, the Gov scenario indicates an increase in vegetable covers and a decrease in cropland, encouraging sustainable development compared to the BAU scenario. Full article

Growing evidence suggests that intracranial pressure (ICP) plays an important role in the pathophysiology of glaucoma, especially in normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) patients. Controversial results exist about ICP’s relationship to visual field (VF) changes. With the aim to assess the relationship between ICP and VF zones in NTG patients, 80 NTG patients (age 59.5 (11.6) years) with early-stage glaucoma were included in this prospective study. Intraocular pressure (IOP) (Goldmann), visual perimetry (Humphrey) and non-invasive ICP (via a two-depth Transcranial Doppler, Vittamed UAB, Lithuania) were evaluated. Translaminar pressure difference (TPD) was calculated according to the formula TPD = IOP − ICP. The VFs of each patient were divided into five zones: nasal, temporal, peripheral, central, and paracentral. The average pattern deviation (PD) scores were calculated in each zone. The level of significance p < 0.05 was considered significant. NTG patients had a mean ICP of 8.5 (2.4) mmHg. Higher TPD was related with lower mean deviation (MD) (p = 0.01) and higher pattern standard deviation (PSD) (p = 0.01). ICP was significantly associated with the lowest averaged PD scores in the nasal VF zone (p < 0.001). There were no significant correlations between ICP and other VF zones with the most negative mean PD value. (p > 0.05). Further studies are needed to analyze the involvement of ICP in NTG management. Behavioral and movement ecology have quickly advanced as a result of the development of biotelemetry devices and analytical techniques. Global positioning system (GPS) transmitters assist scientists in gathering location and movement data at detailed spatial and temporal resolutions. Machine-learning methods can then be applied to GPS data to provide insights into the ecological mechanisms of animal behavior and movements. By means of accurate GPS data-loggers, in 2019, 2020, and 2021, we tracked 8 red-footed falcons at the two largest colonies in Italy. We collected 13,484 GPS points and used recently introduced machine-learning methodology Unsupervised Animal Behaviour Examiner (UABE) to deduce the regular, nested, and hourly ethograms of the tracked individuals. We found clear and significant patterns of the red-footed falcons’ behaviors on monthly, daily, and hourly bases. Our study is a step forward in advancing the knowledge of this threatened species, and provides a baseline assessment of the current behavioral patterns of this red-footed falcon population, with which results of future studies can be compared to detect potential behavioral changes that act as early warnings of increased human disturbance. The metabolism of a building can be connected to a rooftop greenhouse, exchanging energy, water and CO2 flows, therefore reducing emissions and recycling cultivation inputs. However, integrating a rooftop greenhouse onto a building requires the application of stringent safety codes (e.g., fire, seismic codes), to strengthen and secure the structure with safety elements such as thick steel pillars or fireproof covering materials. These elements can shade the vegetation or reduce solar radiation entering the rooftop greenhouse. Nevertheless, application of additional LED light can help to overcome this constraint. The present study evaluated supplemental LED light application in an integrated rooftop greenhouse (i-RTG) at the ICTA-UAB research institute, located in Barcelona (Spain), for tomato cultivation (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Siranzo). The experiment explored the effects of three LED lighting treatments and a control cultivated under natural light only (CK). Applied treatments, added to natural sunlight, were: red and blue (RB), red and blue + far-red (FR) for the whole day, and red and blue + far-red at the end-of-day (EOD), each for 16 h d−1 (8 a.m.–12 a.m.) with an intensity of 170 µmol m−2 s−1. The results indicate that LED light increased the overall yield by 17% compared with CK plants. In particular, CK tomatoes were 9.3% lighter and 7.2% fewer as compared with tomatoes grown under LED treatments. Fruit ripening was also affected, with an increase of 35% red proximal fruit in LED-treated plants. In conclusion, LED light seems to positively affect the development and growth of tomatoes in building integrated agriculture in the Mediterranean area. Full article
