The exponential growth of genomic and proteomic data has made computational protein–protein interaction (PPI) prediction indispensable, driving the need for a comprehensive and method-aware evaluation of supervised learning approaches. PPIs are fundamental to understanding cellular processes and disease mechanisms, yet experimental identification remains slow, costly, and difficult to scale. This survey systematically investigates ten supervised learning models—Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), Naïve Bayes, Probabilistic Decision Tree, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Least Squares SVM (LS-SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), and Weighted K-Nearest Neighbor (WKNN)—through a tri-layered framework that integrates Comparative Quantitative Analysis, Comparative Observational Analysis, and Experimental Evaluations. Beyond conventional accuracy summaries, this work provides critical commentary tied to real-world use, analyzing where techniques succeed or fail in practice—for instance, when instance-based methods bottleneck during inference, when kernel choices influence SVM variance, or when deep architectures trade accuracy for computational cost. The survey also offers concrete deployment guidance, such as calibration insights for WKNN versus KNN under varying feature noise or dataset curation quality, delivering operational perspectives that typical surveys omit. Comparative Quantitative Analysis consolidates metrics such as accuracy, F1-score, and computational time from the existing literature, while Comparative Observational Analysis evaluates interpretability, scalability, dataset suitability, and efficiency. Complementing these, Experimental Evaluations conducted by the authors empirically validate model performance on benchmark datasets. Together, these layers provide a unified and evidence-backed perspective on algorithmic strengths, weaknesses, and practical applicability. Findings show that GNNs and DNNs achieve the highest predictive accuracy due to their ability to capture structural and topological relationships, whereas ELM and Naïve Bayes offer superior efficiency. SVM and LS-SVM maintain robust stability under noisy conditions, and CNNs are well-suited for sequence-based prediction tasks. By combining empirical validation, critical insights, and deployment-focused recommendations, this survey delivers decision-grade guidance that bridges theoretical understanding with real-world implementation, thus clarifying the trade-offs among accuracy, efficiency, and scalability in PPI detection research. Predicting the concrete breakout strength of an expansion anchor embedded in short carbon fiber-reinforced concrete (SCFRC) is challenging due to the nonlinear and heterogeneous nature of fiber–matrix interaction. This study develops an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to estimate the breakout capacity of a single expansion anchor installed in SCFRC. Experimental data from 48 cases covering variations in compressive strength, tensile strength, fiber volume fraction, and fiber length were used to train and validate multiple ANN architectures in MATLAB’s Regression Learner. A 4-4-1 trilayered ANN with Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) activation and 5-fold cross-validation achieved the most reliable performance, yielding R2 values of 0.6726 (validation) and 0.9376 (test), with correspondingly low RMSE, MAE, and scatter index (SI < 0.1). SHAP-based sensitivity analysis identified tensile strength as the dominant predictor, contributing 70.78% to model output influence. ANN predictions were compared with the Concrete Capacity Design (CCD) model adopted by ACI and the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) and a multiple linear regression (MLR) model, showing that while the ANN is not the most precise model, it provides acceptable accuracy and captures nonlinear concrete breakout behavior more effectively than linear approaches. Results demonstrate that the ANN framework offers a viable data-driven tool for estimating concrete breakout strength in SCFRC anchorage systems. Full article

Filling operations in pressurised pipeline systems can trap air pockets, generating hazardous transient overpressures that threaten structural integrity and operational reliability. Evaluating these events using conventional hydraulic models can be computationally intensive, limiting design-space exploration of operational scenarios. This study presents a simulation-driven design-screening framework based on Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate and predict peak absolute pressures during pipeline start-up and filling operations. A total of 2000 transient scenarios were generated for a representative 1100 m pipeline system by varying key geometric and operational parameters, including diameter, friction factor, column lengths, slopes, and reservoir elevation. Twenty-eight machine learning regression models were trained to develop a physics-informed surrogate model capable of rapidly predicting pressure peaks within the defined parameter domain. The trilayered neural network achieved the highest predictive accuracy, with robust validation (RMSE = 10.95 m, R2 = 0.99) and test performance (RMSE = 9.78 m, R2 = 0.99). Screening results showed that nominal pressure thresholds of 61.18 m and 407.89 m were exceeded in 97.53% and 4.89% of the retained peak-forming scenarios (n = 1746), respectively. The proposed framework provides an efficient and reproducible surrogate-based design-screening approach for transient overpressure risk within the evaluated hydraulic domain. Full article

The application of machine learning (ML) methods enables the modeling of sheet metal friction phenomena based on experimental data, allowing for the prediction of the coefficient of friction (CoF) under various operating conditions. The aim of this article is to compare the predictive capability of a wide range of ML algorithms trained on the results of the strip drawing test. The variable parameters in the strip drawing test were sheet orientation, load, sample orientation relative to the sheet rolling direction, and the drawing quality of the low-carbon steel sheet metal. Based on the coefficient of determination (R2) and the root mean squared error (RMSE), it was determined that the best predictive performance was achieved by a trilayer neural network (R2 = 0.986, RMSE = 0.0025). It was found that the CoF decreased with increasing countersample surface roughness and load. Meanwhile, the orientation of strip samples relative to the sheet rolling direction had a statistically insignificant effect on the CoF. Based on SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values, it was shown that the average roughness of the countersamples and the load had the most significant influence on the friction coefficient. This was also confirmed using the F-test and permutation importance analysis of the friction process parameters. Full article

This study evaluates the mechanical behavior and durability of a silty soil stabilized with Portland cement and recycled ground glass powder (GGP). The porosity–cement index (η/Civ) was applied to predict unconfined compressive strength (qu), splitting tensile strength (qt), and accumulated mass loss (ALM) under wetting–drying cycles. Mixtures were prepared with cement contents of 3%, 6%, and 9%, GGP contents of 5%, 15%, and 30%, and dry unit weights of 13.5, 14.5, and 15.5 kN/m3, and were cured for 7, 28, and 90 days. The experimental program consisted of a large dataset, comprising 486 mechanical tests (unconfined compressive and splitting tensile strength) and 81 durability tests, providing a robust basis for both empirical modeling and machine learning analysis. The results confirmed a strong power-law relationship between η/Civ and both qu and qt, achieving high coefficients of determination (R2 > 0.98). The strength coefficient (A) increased consistently with curing time and GGP addition, indicating enhanced pozzolanic reactivity and matrix densification. After 90 days, qu increased by over 250% and qt by nearly 700%. Durability tests revealed exponential reductions in ALM with higher density and binder content, achieving values below 0.5% for the densest mixtures, which contained 30% GGP. These findings validate the η/Civ index as an effective predictor of strength and durability in soil–cement–GGP geomaterials, establishing a solid basis for future integration with machine learning models. The implementation of twenty-eight machine learning presets for predicting qu, qt, and ALM demonstrated that the Matern 5/2 Gaussian Process Regression and the trilayered neural network are the most suitable algorithms, achieving R2 values higher than 0.987 in both the validation and testing stages. All grid faults can cause significant problems within the power grid, including disconnection or malfunctions of wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) connected to the power grid. This study proposes a comparative analysis of the fault ride-through capability of a WECS-based permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) system. To overcome these issues, active crowbar and capacitive bridge fault current limiter-based machine learning algorithm protection methods are implemented within the WECS system, both separately and in a hybrid. The regression approach is applied for the machine-side converter (MSC) and the grid side converter (GSC) controllers, which involve numerical data. The classification method is employed for protection system controllers, which work with data in distinct classes. These approaches are trained on historical data to predict the optimal control characteristics of the wind turbine system in real time, taking into account both fault and normal operating conditions. The neural network trilayered model has the lowest root mean squared error and mean squared error values, and it has the highest R-squared values. Therefore, the neural network trilayered model can accurately model the nonlinear relationships between its variables and demonstrates the best performance. The neural network trilayered model is selected for the MSC control system in this study. On the other hand, support vector machine regression is selected for the GSC controller due to its superior results. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed machine learning algorithm performance for WECS based on a PMSG is robustly utilized under different operating conditions during all grid faults. Due to rising concerns regarding the adulteration and mislabeling of honey, new directives at the European level encourage researchers to develop reliable honey authentication models based on rapid and cost-effective analytical techniques, such as vibrational spectroscopies. The present study discusses the identification of the main vibrational bands of the FT-Raman and ATR-IR spectra of the most consumed honey varieties in Transylvania: acacia, honeydew, and rapeseed, exposing the ways the spectral fingerprint differs based on the honey’s varietal-dependent composition. Additionally, a pilot study on honey authentication describes a new methodology of processing the combined vibrational data with the most efficient machine learning algorithms. By employing the proposed methodology, the developed model was capable of distinguishing honey produced in a narrow geographical region (Transylvania) with an accuracy of 85.2% and 93.8% on training and testing datasets when the Trilayered Neural Network algorithm was applied to the combined IR and Raman data. Moreover, acacia honey was differentiated against fifteen other sources with a 87% accuracy on training and testing datasets. The proposed methodology proved efficiency and can be further employed for label control and food safety enhancement. Full article

The modeling of pan evaporation (Ep) trends in Slovak river sub-basins was conducted using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques algorithms to accurately calculate evaporation rates based on daily climate data from 2010 to 2023 across eight sub-basins in the Slovak Republic. The AI modeling results reveal that the Bodrog, Hornád, Ipeľ, Morava, Slaná, and Váh river basins are experiencing increases in evaporation, while the Dunaj and Hron rivers show declining trends. This divergence may indicate varying ecological factors influencing the evaporation dynamics of each river. A comprehensive set of 28 machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models was employed, including ML techniques such as linear regression, tree-based, support vector machines (both with and without kernels), ensemble, and Gaussian process methods; as well as DL approaches like neural networks (narrow, medium, wide, bilayered, and trilayered). Among these, stepwise linear regression provided the most optimal fit. The minimum redundancy maximum relevance (mRMR) method was utilized for feature selection to balance relevance and redundancy effectively. The results suggest that emphasizing relative humidity (RH) and minimum temperature (tmin) significantly enhances accuracy, highlighting the critical roles of these factors in modeling pan evaporation trends. The results offer precise evaporation analyses to improve water management and lessen scarcity. Full article

The rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the advancement of 5G technology require strong cybersecurity measures within IoT frameworks. Traditional security methods are insufficient due to the wide variety and large number of IoT devices and their limited computational capabilities. With 5G enabling faster data transmission, security risks have increased, making effective protective measures essential. Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks present a significant threat to IoT security. In response, we have developed a new approach using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to identify and prevent XSS breaches in IoT systems over 5G networks. We significantly improved our model’s predictive performance by using filter and wrapper feature selection methods. We validated our approach using two datasets, NF-ToN-IoT-v2 and Edge-IIoTset, ensuring its strength and adaptability across different IoT environments. For the NF-ToN-IoT-v2 dataset with filter feature selection, our Bilayered Neural Network (2 × 10) achieved the highest accuracy of 99.84%. For the Edge-IIoTset dataset with filtered feature selection, the Trilayered Neural Network (3 × 10) achieved the best accuracy of 99.79%. We used ANOVA tests to address the sensitivity of neural network performance to initial conditions, confirming statistically significant improvements in detection accuracy. The ANOVA results validated the enhancements across different feature selection methods, demonstrating the consistency and reliability of our approach. Our method demonstrates outstanding accuracy and robustness, highlighting its potential as a reliable solution for enhancing IoT security in the era of 5G networks. Full article

The scientific community widely recognizes that the broad use of renewable energy sources in clean energy systems will become a substantial and common trend in the next decades. The most urgent matter that has to be addressed is how to enhance the amount of renewable energy integration into the system while ensuring system stability in the presence of sudden fluctuations in generation and system faults. This study introduces a methodology that may be applied to any power system to optimize the level of renewable energy sources (RESs) integration. The methodology relies on using a trilayered neural network (TNN), which is a model utilized in the field of artificial intelligence. In order to apply and analyze the outcomes of the proposed optimization technique, the Kundur power system is employed as a case study. The objective of this methodology is to enhance the operation dispatches of a power system to attain a higher level of renewable energy output, specifically photovoltaic (PV) generation, while maintaining the stability of the system. This would enhance the stakeholders’ or utility providers’ capacity to make well-informed judgments on operation dispatch processes. The findings of this study suggest that it is generally recommended to raise the dispatchable power values for the generators in the loading region and lower the dispatchable power values for the generators in the generating area. Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm disorder that is now becoming a significant healthcare challenge as it affects more and more people in developed countries. This paper proposes a novel approach for detecting this disease. For this purpose, we examined the ECG signal by detecting QRS complexes and then selecting 30 successive R-peaks and analyzing the atrial activity segment with a variety of indices, including the entropy change, the variance of the wavelet transform indices, and the distribution of energy in bands determined by the dual-Q tunable Q-factor wavelet transform and coefficients of the Hilbert transform of ensemble empirical mode decomposition. These transformations provided a vector of 21 features that characterized the relevant part of the electrocardiography signal. The MIT-BIH Atrial Fibrillation Database was used to evaluate the proposed method. Then, using the K-fold cross-validation method, the sets of features were fed into the LS-SVM and SVM classifiers and a trilayered neural network classifier. Training and test subsets were set up to avoid sampling from a single participant and to maintain the balance between classes. In addition, individual classification quality scores were analyzed for each signal to determine the dependencies of the classification quality on the subject. The results obtained during the testing procedure showed a sensitivity of 98.86%, a positive predictive value of 99.04%, and a classification accuracy of 98.95%. Full article

Cyst nematodes are plant parasitic nematodes infecting crops, causing extensive crop damage and annual losses, and affecting food production. The precise species identification is significant to initiate their control. The repeatable, less expensive, and less laborious distinguishing cyst nematode species using image processing and artificial intelligence can be advantageous. The objective of this study was to distinguish cyst nematodes belonging to the species Globodera pallida, Globodera rostochiensis, and Heterodera schachtii based on image parameters using artificial neural networks (ANN). The application of parameters selected from a set of 2172 textures of images in color channels L, a, b, X, Y, Z, R, G, B, V, U, and S to build classification models using a narrow neural network, medium neural network, wide neural network, trilayered neural network, WiSARD, multilayer perceptron, and RBF network is a great novelty of the present study. Algorithms allowed for distinguishing cyst nematode species with an average accuracy reaching 89.67% for a model developed using WiSARD. The highest correctness was obtained for H. schachtii and this species was distinguished from each other with the highest accuracy of 95–98% depending on the classifier. Whereas the highest number of misclassified cases occurred between G. pallida, G. rostochiensis belonging to the same genus Globodera. The developed procedure involving image parameters and artificial neural networks can be useful for non-destructive and objective distinguishing cyst nematode species. Full article

Detecting image manipulation is essential for investigating the processing history of digital images. In this paper, a novel scheme is proposed to detect the use of low-pass filters in image processing. A new convolutional neural network with a reasonable size was designed to identify three types of low-pass filters. The learning experiences of the three solvers were combined to enhance the detection ability of the proposed approach. Global pooling layers were employed to protect the information loss between the convolutional layers, and a new global variance pooling layer was introduced to improve detection accuracy. The extracted features from the convolutional neural network were mapped to the frequency domain to enrich the feature set. A leaky Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) layer was discovered to perform better than the traditional ReLU layer. A tri-layered neural network classifier was employed to classify low-pass filters with various parameters into two, four, and ten classes. As detecting low-pass filtering is relatively easy on large-dimension images, the experimental environment was restricted to small images of 30 × 30 and 60 × 60 pixels. The proposed scheme achieved 80.12% and 90.65% detection accuracy on ten categories of images compressed with JPEG and a quality factor 75 on 30 × 30 and 60 × 60 images, respectively. Full article

The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices in the healthcare sector enables the new era of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). However, IoT devices are susceptible to various cybersecurity attacks and threats, which lead to negative consequences. Cyberattacks can damage not just the IoMT devices in use but also human life. Currently, several security solutions have been proposed to enhance the security of the IoMT, employing machine learning (ML) and blockchain. ML can be used to develop detection and classification methods to identify cyberattacks targeting IoMT devices in the healthcare sector. Furthermore, blockchain technology enables a decentralized approach to the healthcare system, eliminating some disadvantages of a centralized system, such as a single point of failure. This paper proposes a resilient security framework integrating a Tri-layered Neural Network (TNN) and blockchain technology in the healthcare domain. The TNN detects malicious data measured by medical sensors to find fraudulent data. As a result, cyberattacks are detected and discarded from the IoMT system before data is processed at the fog layer. Additionally, a blockchain network is used in the fog layer to ensure that the data is not altered, enhancing the integrity and privacy of the medical data. The experimental results show that the TNN and blockchain models produce the expected result. Furthermore, the accuracy of the TNN model reached 99.99% based on the F1-score accuracy metric. Lean and flexible manufacturing is a matter of necessity for the automotive industries today. Rising consumer expectations, higher raw material and processing costs, and dynamic market conditions are driving the auto sector to become smarter and agile. This paper presents a machine learning-based soft sensor approach for identification and prediction of lean manufacturing (LM) levels of auto industries based on their performances over multifarious flexibilities such as volume flexibility, routing flexibility, product flexibility, labour flexibility, machine flexibility, and material handling. This study was based on a database of lean manufacturing and associated flexibilities collected from 46 auto component enterprises located in the Pune region of Maharashtra State, India. As many as 29 different machine learning models belonging to seven architectures were explored to develop lean manufacturing soft sensors. These soft sensors were trained to classify the auto firms into high, medium or low levels of lean manufacturing based on their manufacturing flexibilities. The seven machine learning architectures included Decision Trees, Discriminants, Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbour (KNN), Ensembles, and Neural Networks (NN). The performances of all models were compared on the basis of their respective training, validation, testing accuracies, and computation timespans. Primary results indicate that the neural network architectures provided the best lean manufacturing predictions, followed by Trees, SVM, Ensembles, KNN, Naive Bayes, and Discriminants. The trilayered neural network architecture attained the highest testing prediction accuracy of 80%. The fine, medium, and coarse trees attained the testing accuracy of 60%, as did the quadratic and cubic SVMs, the wide and narrow neural networks, and the ensemble RUSBoosted trees. Remaining models obtained inferior testing accuracies. The best performing model was further analysed by scatter plots of predicted LM classes versus flexibilities, validation and testing confusion matrices, receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves, and the parallel coordinate plot for identifying manufacturing flexibility trends for the predicted LM levels. Thus, machine learning models can be used to create effective soft sensors that can predict the level of lean manufacturing of an enterprise based on the levels of its manufacturing flexibilities.
