Background/Objectives: Periodontitis is a chronic infectious inflammatory disorder that affects the supporting structures of the teeth. The gingival epithelium plays a crucial role as a physical and immunological barrier, producing pro-inflammatory cytokines in response to microbial pathogens. Modulation of gingival epithelial function has been proposed as a therapeutic strategy to prevent the progression of periodontal disease. Houttuynia cordata, a perennial herb traditionally used in Asian medicine, is recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties, with documented benefits in the cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems. However, its potential therapeutic role in oral pathologies, such as periodontitis, remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of H. cordata extract on interleukin (IL)-1β-stimulated primary gingival keratinocytes (PGKs) subjected to IL-1β-induced inflammatory stress, simulating the conditions encountered during orthodontic treatment. Methods: Inflammation was induced in PGKs using IL-1β, and the impact of H. cordata extract pretreatment was assessed using quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and immunoblotting. Results: H. cordata extract significantly downregulated the mRNA and protein expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, IL-8, and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 in IL-1β-stimulated PGKs without inducing cytotoxicity. Conclusions: These findings suggest that H. cordata holds promise as a preventive agent against periodontitis by attenuating inflammatory responses in gingival epithelial tissues. We believe that our findings will inform the development of prophylactic interventions to reduce periodontitis risk in patients undergoing orthodontic therapy. Full article

Forest ginseng (FG) is a rare medicinal and culinary plant in China, and its drying quality is heavily dependent on the drying method. This study investigated the effects of traditional hot air drying (HAD) and the self-developed negative-pressure circulating airflow-assisted desiccator drying (PCAD) method on the quality of FG using metabolomics and enzyme activity. The results revealed that the enzyme activities of dried FG were reduced considerably. PCAD preserved higher enzyme activity than HAD. Metabolomics data demonstrate that HAD promotes the formation of primary metabolites (amino acids, lipids, nucleotides, etc.), whereas PCAD promotes the formation of secondary metabolites (terpenoids, phenolic acids, etc.). A change-transformation network was built by combining the metabolites listed above and their biosynthetic pathways, and it was discovered that these biosynthetic pathways were primarily associated with the mevalonate (MVA) pathway, lipid metabolism, phenylpropane biosynthesis, and nucleotide metabolism. It is also believed that these findings are related to the chemical stimulation induced by thermal degradation and the ongoing catalysis of enzyme responses to drought stress. The facts presented above will give a scientific basis for the selection of FG drying processes, as well as helpful references for increasing the nutritional quality of processed FG. Full article

For mineral exploration, an increasing number of geophysical instruments have adopted unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as their carrier platforms. The effective fusion of multi-modal geophysical information will be conducive to further enhancing the reliability of exploration results. However, the integration degree of UAVs and geophysical equipment is still low, and the advantages of UAVs as robots have not been fully exploited. In addition, the existing fusion methods are still difficult to use to establish the spatial distribution model of ore-bearing rock. Therefore, we reviewed the development status of UAVs and the geophysical instruments. We believe that only by integrating the system, designing the observation plan in accordance with the requirements of the fusion method, and treating the hardware part as an external extension of the algorithm, can high-matching data be provided for fusion. Subsequently, we analyzed the progress of the fusion methods, leading us to believe that the cross-dimensional and cross-abstract-level issues are major challenges in the algorithm aspect. Meanwhile, the fusion should be carried out simultaneously with the generation of the ore-bearing rock model, that is, to establish an integrated system of fusion and generation. It is hoped that this research can promote the development of UAV-borne multi-modal observation technology. Full article

Factor analysis is a well-known statistical method to describe the variability of observed variables in terms of a smaller number of unobserved latent variables called factors. Even though latent factors are conceptually independent of each other, their influence on the observed variables is often joint and synergistic. We propose to quantify the synergy of the joint influence of factors on the observed variables using O-information, a recently introduced metric to assess high-order dependencies in complex systems; in the proposed framework, latent factors and observed variables are jointly analyzed in terms of their joint informational character. Two case studies are reported: analyzing resting fMRI data, we find that DMN and FP networks show the highest synergy, consistent with their crucial role in higher cognitive functions; concerning HeLa cells, we find that the most synergistic gene is STK-12 (AURKB), suggesting that this gene is involved in controlling the HeLa cell cycle. We believe that our approach, representing a bridge between factor analysis and the field of high-order interactions, will find wide application across several domains. Full article

Due to globalization, companies are exposed to a culturally diversified workforce; therefore, great emphasis is placed on identifying the most effective leadership style that would be able to manage such a workforce. Although numerous studies have attempted to identify successful leadership styles in different cultural settings, none have focused on the perceptions of top managers who work in multinational corporations (MNCs) in culturally diversified surroundings. Thus, our research attempts to identify the most preferred leadership style and characteristics from the perspective of top managers in MNCs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The 13 leadership characteristics analyzed in this study were generated from the 21 characteristics found by Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) research. The participants, top managers in MNCs, needed to evaluate leadership styles by considering leadership characteristics. To ensure the objectiveness of the study, we analyzed their answers by applying the Fuzzy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method. The results indicated that the most preferred leadership characteristics were visionary, inspirational, collaborative team-oriented, and performance-oriented. Moreover, the transformational leadership style emerged as the most preferred leadership style. The study’s findings show that top managers believe that employees in MNCs in the UAE seek a leader with a vision who will inspire, motivate, and help them fulfill their true potential. Full article

Background: Kidney transplantation from a living donor is considered the most beneficial form of treatment for end-stage renal failure, which, in addition to providing patients with better treatment results, significantly improves their quality of life. Understanding factors that influence the willingness to donate kidneys to strangers is critical in promoting and expanding the living donor pool. When considering the decision to become an altruistic kidney donor, individuals must evaluate multiple factors, including the identity of the recipient and their own perceived level of safety. This study aimed to assess the willingness of dialysis center employees to act as living kidney donors for a stranger. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study from February 2023 to June 2024 among dialysis specialists across Poland. The study involved 1093 people (doctors and nurses). The study used our survey questionnaire and standardized tools. Results: Nurses (vs. physicians) and those who advocated the regulation of unspecified living kidney donation in Poland, did not believe in the risk of organ trafficking, and would donate a kidney to a husband/wife or friend and accept kidney transplantation from a husband/wife were more likely to donate a kidney to a stranger. Furthermore, respondents who accepted a loved one’s decision to donate a kidney to a stranger were significantly more willing to donate a kidney to such a person themselves. Perceived self-efficacy was positively associated with the willingness to donate a kidney to a stranger. Conclusions: Less than half of healthcare professionals supported unspecific living organ donation in Poland, and nurses were more willing to donate than physicians. The factors supporting the decision generally included knowledge about organ donation and transplantation, a lack of fear of organ trafficking, and attitudes towards donation. Full article

Proper subcellular localization is essential to exert the designated function of a protein, not only for endogenous proteins but also transgene-encoded proteins. Post-translational modification is a frequently used method to regulate the subcellular localization of a specific protein. While there are a number of tags that are widely used to direct the target protein to a specific location within a cell, these tags often fail to emulate the dynamics of protein trafficking, necessitating an alternative approach to the direct subcellular localization of transgene-encoded proteins. Here, we report the development of a new synthetic polypeptide protein tag comprised of ten amino acids, which promotes membrane localization of a target protein. This short synthetic peptide tag, named “Palmito-Tag”, induces ectopic palmitoylation on the cysteine residue within the tag, thereby promoting membrane localization of the target proteins without affecting their innate function. We show that the target proteins with the Palmito-Tag are incorporated into the membranous organelles within the cells, including the endosomes, as well as extracellular vesicles. Given the reversible nature of palmitoylation, the Palmito-Tag may allow us to shift the subcellular localization of the target protein in a context-dependent manner. With the advent of therapeutic applications of exosomes and other extracellular vesicles, we believe that the ability to reversibly modify a target protein and direct its deposition to the specific subcellular milieu will help us explore more effective venues to harness the potential of extracellular vesicle-based therapies. Certain industries will bear a disproportionate share of the burden of climate change. Climate change risk perceptions can impact workers’ mental health and well-being; increased climate change risk perceptions are also associated with more favourable adaptive attitudes. It is, therefore, important to understand whether climate risk perceptions differ across workers between industries. We conducted an online survey of British Columbians (16+) in 2021 using social media advertisements. Participants rated how likely they believed their industry (Natural Resources, Science, Art and Recreation, Education/Law/Government, Health, Management/Business, Manufacturing, Sales, Trades) would be affected by climate change (on a scale from “Very Unlikely” to “Very Likely”). Ordinal logistic regression examined the association between occupational category and perceived industry vulnerability, adjusting for socio-demographic factors. Among 877 participants, 66.1% of Natural Resources workers perceived it was very/somewhat likely that climate change would impact their industry; only those in Science (78.3%) and Art and Recreation (71.4%) occupations had higher percentages. In the adjusted model, compared to Natural Resources workers, respondents in other occupations, including those in Art and Recreation, Education/Law/Government, Management/Business, Manufacturing, Sales, and Trades, perceived significantly lower risk of climate change-related industry impacts. Industry-specific interventions are needed to increase awareness of and readiness for climate adaptation. Policymakers and industry leaders should prioritize sectoral differences when designing interventions to support climate resilience in the workforce. Full article

There is a lack of studies comparing PE teachers’ reflections on the role of sport in different regions. Using Kirk’s conceptualization of the role of sport, this qualitative comparative study aimed to explore and compare fifth-grade physical education (PE) teachers’ perceptions and experiences related to PE teaching in Finland and in the Kurdistan region of Iraq (KRI). In-depth interviews were conducted with eight Finnish and six KRI teachers, and the data were analyzed using the NVivo qualitative analysis program. The results showed that the Finnish teachers’ reflections were classified into four themes: joy and competence rather than sport, sport and curriculum, the status of sport in society and prerequisites for physical activities and sport. The KRI teachers’ reflections were also classified into four themes: sport as an aim in PE, the teacher as a model and leader of the sport, sport raising one’s status and PE being not only about sport. The role of sport in PE was recognized by teachers from both regions, although from different perspectives. The Finnish teachers made a clear distinction between PE and sport. The KRI teachers perceived PE and sport almost as one, in the belief that PE primarily teaches pupils about sport and that sport itself is a central goal. Both groups of teachers aimed to enhance their pupils’ well-being and encourage a physically active lifestyle through PE. The KRI teachers believed that engaging students in sports would promote these aims, whereas Finnish teachers saw sport as just one of many components needed to achieve these objectives. The Finnish teachers emphasized the national PE curriculum guiding their work, while the KRI teachers had no standardized PE curriculum in primary school. This comparative study highlights the importance of implementing a well-structured PE curriculum in primary schools in the KRI. Further studies should examine how the implementation of such a curriculum will affect KRI teachers’ teaching and the role of sport in PE. Full article

Axis definition plays a key role in the establishment of animal body plans, both in normal development and regeneration. The cnidarian Hydra can re-establish its simple body plan when regenerating from a random cell aggregate or a sufficiently small tissue fragment. At the beginning of regeneration, a hollow cellular spheroid forms, which then undergoes symmetry breaking and de novo body axis definition. In the past, we have published related work in a physics journal, which is difficult to read for scientists from other disciplines. Here, we review our work for readers not so familiar with this type of approach at a level that requires very little knowledge in mathematics. At the same time, we present a few aspects of Hydra biology that we believe to be linked to our work. These biological aspects may be of interest to physicists or members of related disciplines to better understand our approach. The proposed theoretical model is based on fluctuations of gene expression that are triggered by mechanical signaling, leading to increasingly large groups of cells acting in sync. With a single free parameter, the model quantitatively reproduces the experimentally observed expression pattern of the gene ks1, a marker for ‘head forming potential’. We observed that Hydra positions its axis as a function of a weak temperature gradient, but in a non-intuitive way. Supposing that a large fluctuation including ks1 expression is locked to define the head position, the model reproduces this behavior as well—without further changes. We explain why we believe that the proposed fluctuation-based symmetry breaking process agrees well with recent experimental findings where actin filament organization or anisotropic mechanical stimulation act as axis-positioning events. The model suggests that the Hydra spheroid exhibits huge sensitivity to external perturbations that will eventually position the axis. Full article

The simulation of wind power, electricity load, and natural gas prices will allow commodity traders to see the future movement of prices in a more probabilistic manner. The ability to observe possible paths for wind power, electricity load, and natural gas prices enables traders to obtain valuable insights for placing their trades on electricity prices. Since the above processes involve a seasonality factor, the seasonality component was modeled using a truncated Fourier series, and the random component was modeled using stochastic differential equations (SDE). It is evident from the literature that all the above processes are mean-reverting processes; thus, three mean-reverting Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU) processes were considered the model for wind power, the electricity load, and natural gas prices. Industry experts believe there is a correlation between wind power, the electricity load, and natural gas prices. For example, when wind power is higher and the electricity load is lower, natural gas prices are relatively low. The novelty of this study is the incorporation of the correlation structure between processes into the mean-reverting OU process using a copula function. Thus, the study utilized a vine copula and integrated it into the simulation. The study was conducted for the Texas energy market and used daily time scales for the simulations, and it was able to conclude that the proposed novel mean-reverting OU process outperforms the classical mean-reverting process in the case of wind power and the electricity load. The radical-mediated intramolecular translocation of cyano groups has been recognized as a useful tool for the site-selective functionalization of organic molecules. The process is believed to proceed through the addition of an in situ-generated carbon-centered radical to the nitrile triple bond, followed by the β-scission of the resulting cyclic iminyl radical intermediate to relocate the cyano group and produce a more stable carbon radical for further elaboration. Beginning in the early 1960s and continuing for the next forty years, the research in this particular area has seen a surge of growth during the past two decades with advancements in radical chemistry and photocatalysis. The present article attempts to conduct a comprehensive review of existing studies on this topic by covering the literature from 1961 to 2025. The procedures developed for the purpose are grouped and discussed in four sections according to the strategies used to generate the initial carbon radicals, which include (i) hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT), (ii) radical addition to the π system, (iii) halogen-atom transfer (XAT), and (iv) the homolytic fission of a C-C single bond. In each section, a specific emphasis will be placed on reaction conditions, substrate scopes, and mechanisms. Full article

In the present study, an L-shaped multi-walled structure of NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) was fabricated by using the wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) method on a titanium substrate. The present study aims to investigate the fabricated structure for microstructure, macrostructure, and mechanical properties. The 40 layers of L-shaped structure were successfully fabricated at optimized parameters of wire feed speed at 6 m/min, travel speed at 12 mm/s, and voltage at 20 V. The macrographs demonstrated the continuous bonding among the layers with complete fusion. The microstructure in the area between the two middle layers has exhibited a mixture of columnar grains (both coarse and fine), interspersed with dendritic colonies. The microstructure in the topmost layers has exhibited finer colonial structures in relatively greater numbers. The microhardness (MH) test has shown the average values of 283.2 ± 3.67 HV and 371.1 ± 5.81 HV at the bottom and topmost layers, respectively. A tensile test was conducted for specimens extracted from deposition and build directions, which showed consistent mechanical behavior. For the deposition direction, the average ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (EL) were obtained as 831 ± 22.91 MPa and 14.32 ± 0.55%, respectively, while the build direction has shown average UTS and EL values of 774 ± 6.56 MPa and 14.16 ± 0.21%, respectively. The elongation exceeding 10% in all samples suggests that the fabricated structure demonstrates properties comparable to those of wrought metal. Fractography of all tensile specimens has shown good ductility and toughness. Lastly, a differential scanning calorimetry test was carried out to assess the retention of shape memory effect for the fabricated structure. Background/Aim: Dental treatment is typically performed under general anesthesia for children who have difficulty cooperating, as well as for those with mental or physical disabilities requiring special care. This study aims to categorize and evaluate the systemic disease or syndrome status, age, and gender of children who require dental treatment under general anesthesia. Materials and Methods: In this study, the ages, sexes, disabilities (if any), and systemic diseases of patients requiring dental treatment under general anesthesia (GA) between the ages of 1 and 15 were analyzed. The patients were categorized based on having difficulties cooperating or having mental or physical disabilities that require special care. Results: In this study, data from 1666 patients were examined. A total of 955 patients (57.32%) were male, while 711 (42.67%) were female. Overall, 232 (13.9%) patients with disabilities or systemic diseases visited the clinic, including 49 who had epilepsy (2.9%), the highest number among the systemic disease group. This finding was statistically significant in the 4–6 age group (p < 0.00). Conclusions: Among patients with special needs, epilepsy emerged as a disorder that requires the most dental treatment. We believe that providing dental treatment for children with neurological diseases, such as epilepsy, in a fully equipped operating room will be beneficial in managing complications that may arise during treatment. Examining the Branching Patterns of the Hepatis Portae Vena with Computed Tomography Images

Background/Objectives: The present study aimed to examine the branching pattern images of the Hepatis Portae Vena (HPV), which is one of the vascular structures of the liver, with Computed Tomography (CT), and to uncover the surgical and radiological importance of the variations. Methods: The HPV branching patterns on CT images of healthy liver of 996 individuals (47.8% male, 52.2% female) between the ages of 20 and 59 were evaluated according to previously determined definitions. The division of the main branch of the HPV into ramus (r.), dexter, and r. sinister and the later division of r. dexter into r. anterior and r. posterior branches were called Type I-a, other main branch variations were called Type II-a, Type III-a, and Type IV-a, and the r. dexter variations were called Type V-b, Type VI-b, Type VII-b, and Type VIII-b. Also, all individuals in the present study were examined under four age groups as 20–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, and the data were analyzed in the SPSS 21 software. Results: Type I-a (73.1%) was detected most frequently in all individuals, but Type VI-b (0.1%) and Type VII-b (0.1%) were detected least frequently. Following Type I-a, Type II-a (10.6%), Type III-a (8.2%), and Type V-b (5.5%) were detected, respectively. No statistically significant differences were detected between gender and age groups in terms of the frequency of HPV types (p > 0.05). Conclusions: We believe that accurate knowledge and definition of HPV anatomy will guide liver surgeries and interventional radiology, which are the cornerstones of the treatment of liver diseases.
