Dante and the Ecclesial Paradox: Rebuke, Reverence, and Redemption

In the past hundred years, three pontiffs have written apostolic letters to commemorate anniversaries relating to Dante: in 1921, Benedict XV marked the sixth centenary of the death of the great poet; in 1965, Paul VI judged it opportune to write on the occasion of the seventh centenary of his birth; and in 2021, Pope Francis added his voice to the numerous others wishing to honour the memory of the supreme Florentine poet on the seventh centenary of his death. Each letter is a product of its time: one hundred years ago, the Pope—still confined within the Vatican and refusing to recognise the Kingdom of Italy due to the Roman Question—addressed his text “to the beloved sons, professors and pupils of literary institutes and centres of higher learning within the Catholic world”; Paul VI, in full accord with the spirit of the Second Vatican Council and its vision of a Church seeking collaboration with the world, addressed his writing to Dante scholars more broadly, and within the same letter, together with other academic authorities, established the Chair of Dante Studies at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan; Pope Francis today, in his outward-facing style of evangelisation, challenges everyone to (re)read Dante, whose teaching remains relevant seven hundred years after his death. Despite the differing political contexts and ecclesial agendas, Benedict XV, Paul VI, and Pope Francis are united on one point: Dante is a Christian poet—critical of the Church, certainly, but loyal to his faith and desirous of a religious institution that is more serious and less corrupt. This brief study presents the homage which the Church, today, seven centuries later, renders to this Poet—now widely recognised as a passionate witness of an arduous and active faith, in pursuit of justice and freedom. Many contemporaries considered the crusader conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 as a significant moment in Salvation History. This article investigates how the reception of the Roman conquest of the city (70 CE) contributed to such an understanding. The important Benedictine exegete Rupert of Deutz (c. 1070–1129) refers to the Roman conquest in 79 passages within his opus, notably in his various biblical commentaries. This case study shows how the past event provided a rationale, exegetical and providential in nature, to understand three dimensions: (a) the role of the Jews, especially that it had been necessary to deprive them of the Holy Land; (b) the current situation of and purpose of Christians in the Holy Land; and (c) the End of Time, which was expected in Jerusalem, and which Rupert anchored already significantly in his own present. His commentary on John’s Revelation even asserted that the Roman conquest had opened the sixth of seven seals (Rev. 6:12). Therefore, the Apocalypse had been ongoing since 70 CE—but only in the Holy Land, a fact that made it necessary for Christians to travel there. The article thus demonstrates that biblical commentaries are potent sources for both crusade studies and historical research in general. Full article

Geoarchaeological work and excavations of the Helike Project over the last 30 years in the Helike coastal plain, Gulf of Corinth, have yielded abundant evidence on ancient settlements, as well as the surrounding landscape and environmental changes that resulted from geological phenomena and catastrophic events. The research methods applied by the Helike Project followed a multidisciplinary approach, including combined archaeological excavations and palaeoseismological trenching, geophysical prospection, archaeometric, environmental, and soil micromorphology analyses, and computer-based landscape modelling. A wealth of settlement remains that were unearthed across the plain, ranging in date from the Early Helladic period (3rd millennium BC) to the Late Antiquity (5th century AD), indicates that the ancient inhabitants of the area chose to always resettle in the area by adjusting their ways of living to the geomorphology and natural hazards, prevailing each time. Our results show that disasters in the area increased between the Geometric and Roman times due to severe earthquakes that occurred approximately every 300 years. In particular, archaeological and geological finds recovered from the Late Classical–Hellenistic Helike settlement, which was revived in the western part of the plain shortly after the disastrous 373 BC earthquake, have enriched our knowledge regarding the historical seismicity of the region and past human–environment relationships. For archaeological studies, the expected outcome of a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey is a series of time-slices (or depth-slices) that mark the position of buried structures at different depths. The clarity of these time-slices is strongly site-dependent and is particularly worsened in the presence of even small percentages of clay, which strongly attenuates the GPR signal. This is the condition affecting the Greek–Roman archaeological site of Tindari (Sicily, Italy). Here, we performed a multichannel GPR survey particularly focusing on a residential insula. In order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio, we tested two processing strategies: a conventional in-line stacking and a new concept of off-line stacking. This last was performed dividing spatially adjacent channels of the GPR multichannel system into groups and stacking the signals of each group at each specific location. We observed that off-line stacking improves the signal-to-noise ratio in 2D sections and time-slices quality. Comparisons showed that off-line stacking has a clear advantage over traditional in-line stacking, at least for the specific application reported in this paper. Off-line stacking of GPR multichannel systems is, therefore, simple but very effective in increasing the investigation depth, especially in challenging environments. Full article

In the field of building archaeology, the analysis of wall surfaces represents a fundamental tool for the study of an architecture and its construction phases. In fact, masonry stores valuable information regarding not only used materials and construction techniques but also transformations happen over time for natural events or anthropic interventions. The traditional approach to the analysis of building materials is mainly based on direct observation and manual annotations based on orthophotos obtained through photogrammetric surveys. This process, while providing a high degree of accuracy and understanding, is extremely time- and resource-consuming. In addition, the lack of standardised procedures for the statistical analysis of measurements leads to data that are difficult to compare for different contexts. Time and subjectivity are ultimately the two main limitations that most hinder the diffusion of the mensiochronological approach and for this reason, the most recent artificial intelligence solutions for the segmentation and extraction of measurements of individual masonry components will be addressed. Finally, a workflow will be presented based on image segmentation using machine learning models and the automatic extraction and statistical analysis of measurements using a script designed specifically by the author for the mensiochronological analysis of Roman brick masonry. Türkiye represents an important biogeographic region connecting Southeast Europe with Southwest Asia, where pig domestication began in the western Palearctic. We studied the phylogenetic relationships and spatial distribution of new and published mitochondrial D-loop sequences of wild boars from Türkiye, other parts of the Middle East, and from around the world to understand migration patterns within Asia Minor and other parts of the Middle East as well as across the Bosphorus/Sea of Marmara/Dardanelles, a current migration barrier to Southwest Europe. Our phylogenetic (ML, BI) and spatial (Geneland) analyses revealed haplotypes both endemic to Anatolia and with a wider distribution in the Middle East as well as European (E1) lineages. The latter suggested possible rare immigration into Anatolia at present times and prehistorical/historical anthropogenic translocations of wild boars or pigs, such as during the pre-Hellenic, Roman, and Byzantine periods or during the European crusades, and subsequent introgression into Anatolian wild boars. Import of pigs with E1 haplotypes and introgression into wild boars during the medieval Empire of Trebizond particularly by Italian merchants or settlers, is also suggested. Anatolian lineages that may have formed the basis of the archaic domestication process of pigs in the western Palearctic are discussed. Full article

The liturgy of the Catholic Church adopts and reframes passages from Scripture in manifold ways. At times a passage is proclaimed or sung in the liturgy exactly as it appears in the Bible; at other times, a prayer or antiphon draws from one or more verses of the Scripture for inspiration. In order to demonstrate this twofold practice, this article presents a single example of a random day on the liturgical calendar, the Second Sunday of Lent. It will explore the uses of Scripture in the revised entrance and communion antiphons, the restoration of long-neglected ancient presidential prayers, the composition of a new collect and preface, the three-year cycle of readings, and the intersection of biblical references between the Roman Missal and the Liturgy of the Hours. By examining a single example, the reader will come to a deeper appreciation of the depth of the interplay between the Bible and liturgy on every day of the calendar. This article will cite the present and previous Roman Missals, the Roman Gradual, the context for the structure of the Lectionary for Mass on this day as the revisers conceived it, and unique features from the Liturgy of the Hours. It will also show how particular biblical references on one day reappear in other liturgical celebrations, expanding the reader’s appreciation of the specific application of biblical texts to a variety of liturgical events. The fourth-century historian Eusebius, bishop of Caesarea, lived during the anti-Christian persecutions of the Roman emperor Maximinus Daia and believed fervently that Jesus Christ would imminently return to alleviate the suffering of God’s people. When Constantine the Great became emperor and converted to Christianity, the bishop’s disposition towards the ‘last things’ or end times, known as eschatology, suddenly changed to a belief that God’s kingdom had already been inaugurated in this emperor’s reign. In this way, Eusebius conflated Church and Empire into a single organism governed by the emperor on behalf of Christ. This article demonstrates that this disposition in fact emerged from the bishop’s problematic Christology. Heretofore, the concept of the Logos had been applied to Son of God as creator of the world and who assumed human nature as Jesus. However, Eusebius’ disposition towards the Logos was subordinationist and dissociative, thus paving the way for him to depict the emperor as an agent of, and inhabited by, the Logos in the eschatological working out of earthly affairs from the vantage point of the city of Rome. Eusebius therefore essentially replaced Christ’s eschatological agency in the usurpation of the Church by the eternal city that was ultimately recapitulated within Constantine himself, even after the latter had died. Theaters in ancient Pompeii played a vital role in Roman entertainment, shaping the auditory experiences of spectators. This study examines the acoustic properties of the Amphitheater, the Grand Theater, and the Odeon using impulse response (IR) analysis to reconstruct their soundscapes. Next, the study considers the impact of typical musical instruments, vocal performances, and ambient sounds—such as gladiatorial combat—on these spaces’ acoustics. Findings reveal significant differences in reverberation times, sound clarity, and spatial characteristics, shaped by each theater’s design. These sites, preserved after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, provide a unique opportunity to analyze how architecture influenced sound propagation. The Amphitheater, with its vast open structure, enhanced large-scale events, while the Grand Theater’s semi-enclosed design balanced musical and theatrical performances. The Odeon, the most intimate of the three, prioritized speech clarity. These insights highlight how Roman architects engineered performance spaces to accommodate diverse entertainment forms. By combining acoustic measurements with historical context, this research offers a deeper understanding of ancient Pompeii’s soundscapes and the auditory experiences of its inhabitants and offers insights for composition and soundscape creations that take inspiration from these prominent historical architectural and cultural icons whilst exploring its potential within contemporary immersive listening practices. The Eastern Catholic Churches and the Restoration of Unity Theology

The Church of Christ is unity in diversity. Around the great centers of diffusion, the rites have been gradually defined as “the liturgical, theological, spiritual and disciplinary patrimony, culture and circumstances of the history of a distinct people, by which its own manner of living the faith is manifested” (Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches can. 28 § 1). At the same time, the necessity of the existence of the sacred ministry for the celebration of the Eucharist and the Sacraments is the basis for the establishment of the hierarchy of bishoprics that are formed ontogenetically and diachronically around the primary diffusion center, recognized as the Mother Church or, starting from the IVth–Vth centuries, as the Patriarchates. The tensions between dissident factions culminated in the Ecclesiastical Schism of 1054, which separated Eastern Christianity from the Roman Church. The restoration of the unity of the Constantinopolitan Churches of Central and Eastern Europe began with the Union of Brest–Litovsk (1595–1596), which generated a process of gradual entry of the territories of the Eastern Churches into unity, in 1700 reaching Transylvania. The Greek Catholic Churches fought a pioneering struggle in asserting their own traditions in order to restore the unity of the Church. The Eastern churches that re-entered the unity of the Catholic Church faced a change of ecclesiological paradigm, being in a permanent struggle to preserve their own specificity and to affirm the unity. The signatories of the Union Acts rejected “the Uniatism” from the beginning, a fact accepted today within the theological dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches, the canonical evolution and the treatises of Greek–Catholic theology being the result of a process of experimentation “from within” of unity and catholicity in the context of the modern and contemporary era. The United Churches have paved the way for the restoration of unity between East and West, being obligated to grasp different forms of canonical manifestation of unity in the absence of a Patriarchate in communion with the Church of Rome, during which they offer a reflection that fully grows through a theology of restoring the unity of the Church, benefiting today from the ecclesiological paradigm shift of Vatican II and by the conceptual tools provided by the traditions and the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches. This study examines the Roman burgus and medieval lowland castle ‘Zullestein’ near Biblis (Bergstraße district/Hessen/Germany) and its surrounding fluvio-scape. The aim of the study is to reassess the appearance of the fortifications and the surrounding area at the confluence of the River Weschnitz and the River Rhine based on the excavation results from the 1970s and current geoarchaeological research on site. Our approach encompasses electrical resistivity tomography, direct push sensing, sediment coring and the use of a high-resolution digital elevation model in combination with historical depictions of the Zullestein site from the 17th century AD. The findings of this integrative approach indicate that the Roman fort was likely located at a secondary channel of the River Rhine. With the renewed occupation of the Zullestein site by Lorsch Abbey during Carolingian times and the expansion into a lowland castle in the 11th century, the site was now located at the Weschnitz mouth into the Rhine, likely as part of anthropogenic interventions related to the Weschnitz fluvioscape. Traces of the final phase of the castle at the time of the Thirty Years’ War can still be seen in the terrain today and their attribution to individual elements of the historical account can be confirmed by the geoarchaeological results. The combination of methods presented in this study is a suitable option if excavations are not possible. Full article

Purpose: This case study examines the anthropometric characteristics and body composition changes of a 41-year-old Cuban Greco-Roman 130 kg wrestler, a five-time Olympic gold medalist (2008–2024). To optimize his preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, another athlete participated in the qualifying process, allowing him to train without competition gear. Methods: The study monitored changes in body composition using anthropometry and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) at three key time points in 2024: January, June, and July. The final assessment occurred 25 days before the Olympic event, coinciding with the final phase of his preparation. Results: The analysis revealed a significant reduction in total body mass, from 150 kg in January to 138.5 kg in July, with fat mass decreasing from 37.06 kg (24.11%) to 29.7 kg (21.5%). Muscle mass decreased slightly (77.41 kg to 72.3 kg), while bone mass remained stable. The somatotype classification was endomorphic–mesomorphic at all assessments, with slight shifts in its components (4.6–10.4–0.1 in January to 4.4–10.3–0.1 in July), reflecting an improved muscle–fat ratio. Notably, hydration levels and cellular integrity remained stable, as indicated by BIVA analysis. Conclusions: This study provides insight into the anthropometric characteristics and body composition of an elite Greco-Roman wrestler, as well as the changes observed during his preparation for his final Olympic participation. These data serve as a valuable reference for wrestlers and sports professionals, highlighting the physical profile of one of the most emblematic figures in Olympic history. Full article

The Valley of Tammaro River lies between the regions of Molise and Campania in central southern Italy. The area has been inhabited since ancient times due to its fertile soil and plentiful water resources. The interest in this region is enhanced by the many urban centers and the isolated and rural building complexes that date back to the Samnite era and are connected by a road system that is still in use today. Saepinum, regarded as the symbol of Roman civilization in the Molise area (Italy), is one of these. Before becoming a Roman municipium and then a medieval and contemporary rural community, it was a Samnite trade forum and service center. A suburban villa belonging to the Gens Neratia, a family originally from the Roman municipality of Saepinum, is connected to it approximately 2 km northeast. Both sites were partially excavated, and much more can be learned from the material still available. To this end, geoelectrical studies using the tensor acquisition mode were used to conduct geophysical surveys in certain sectors. The data were processed using Data-Adaptive Probability-Based Electrical Resistivity Tomography, here adapted for the first time to Apparent Resistivity Tensor Analysis. The trace of the apparent resistivity tensor provides distortion-free maps and demonstrates that the anomalies are closely constrained on the source bodies. Full article

This paper reports the first evidence of the presence of the mineral tremolite asbestos in Roman building materials from the Micia archaeological site (Romania), thus contributing to the understanding of the implications of ancient building materials. The Micia archaeological site includes both a fort and a civilian Roman military settlement that was inhabited by both civilians and soldiers from various Roman troops. Over time, since the late 2nd century AD, the settlement has undergone significant reconstruction, especially after some fires. Tremolite asbestos is a non-flammable mineral that, due to its fibrous properties, was used in the past in building materials, although it poses health risks when inhaled. To highlight it, several advanced and highly sensitive scientific techniques are used in this work to discover the presence of tremolite asbestos and to examine its structure, composition, and morphology inside the investigated samples. Tremolite asbestos is typically white to gray or greenish in color, characterized by thin, needle-like fibers that can easily become airborne and inhaled. It is a crystalline mineral that usually forms long, straight, sharp fibers. Under high magnification in optical microscopy or in scanning electron microscope images, correlated with other performant analytical techniques (XRD, WDXRF, FTIR, Raman, BET, TGA), tremolite asbestos appears as elongated, slender fibers—often bundled or intertwined—with smooth or slightly striated surfaces. Flexible Glass: Myth and Photonic Technology

The recent fast advances in consumer electronics, especially in cell phones and displays, have led to the development of ultra-thin, hence flexible, glasses. Once available, such flexible glasses have proven to be of great interest and usefulness in other fields, too. Flexible photonics, for instance, has quickly taken advantage of this new material. At first sight, “flexible glass” appears to be an oxymoron. Glass is, by definition, fragile and highly breakable; its structure has puzzled scientists for decades, but it is evident that in most conditions it is a rigid material, so how can it bend? This possibility, however, has aroused the interest of artists and craftsmen since ancient times; thus, in Roman times the myth of flexible glass was born. Furthermore, the myth appeared again in the Middle Age, connected to a religious miracle. Today, however, flexible glass is no more a myth but a reality due to the fact that current technology permits us to produce micron-thick glass sheets, and any ultra-thin material can be bent. Flexibility is coming from the present capability to manufacture glass sheets at a tens of microns thickness coupled with the development of strengthening methods; it is also worth highlighting that, on the micrometric and nanometric scales, silicate glass presents plastic behavior. The most significant application area of flexible glass is consumer electronics, for the displays of smartphones and tablets, and for wearables, where flexibility and durability are crucial. Automotive and medical sectors are also gaining importance. A very relevant field, both for the market and the technological progress, is solar photovoltaics; mechanical flexibility and lightweight have allowed solar cells to evolve toward devices that possess the advantages of conformability, bendability, wearability, and moldability. The mature roll-to-roll manufacturing technology also allows for high-performance devices at a low cost. Here, a brief overview of the history of flexible glass and some examples of its application in solar photovoltaics are presented. Full article
