Reconfigurable intelligent surface sensors (RISs) have emerged as a promising technology for enhancing wireless indoor localization by intelligently controlling signal propagation; however, extracting reliable localization fingerprints from RIS-assisted signals remains challenging due to multipath fading, environmental noise, and nonlinear spatial–temporal channel dynamics. To address this, we propose an Adaptive Dual-Reinforcement Learning-Hybrid Spatial–Temporal Network (ADRL-HSTNet) for RIS-assisted indoor localization. The framework utilizes dual-channel RSSI and phase measurements, followed by noise filtering, normalization, and sliding-window segmentation prior to feature extraction. It then constructs enhanced representations through handcrafted feature extraction and multi-branch processing, including patch-based features, wavelet-domain representations, statistical descriptors, and multi-level segmentation masks. These heterogeneous inputs are encoded using lightweight transformer-based encoders to capture multiscale dependencies. A first reinforcement learning selector adaptively weights the most informative feature branches to produce a fused representation, which is further processed by spatial and temporal transformer modules. Their outputs are adaptively combined via a second reinforcement learning selector to obtain robust localization embedding. The model jointly performs classification, coordinate regression, and uncertainty estimation end-to-end. Experimental results across multiple RIS configurations outperformed the KAN, LSTM-KAN, and RHL-Net (compared against the proposed ADRL-HSTNet) baselines, achieving accuracies of 83.33%, 75.22%, 93.33%, and 88.89%, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Indoor localization in GNSS-denied environments remains a significant challenge due to the low sampling frequency and high variability of wireless signal measurements. This paper presents a wireless communication-based indoor localization method that integrates Wi-Fi received signal strength indication (RSSI) measurements with optical initialization and inertial sensor fusion. The proposed approach eliminates the need for labor-intensive fingerprinting and specialized infrastructure by leveraging existing Wi-Fi networks. Optical pose estimation using ArUco markers provides accurate initial position and orientation, enabling alignment between sensor coordinate systems and reducing inertial drift. During tracking, inertial measurements compensate for motion between sparse Wi-Fi observations by virtually translating historical RSSI samples, allowing statistically consistent averaging and improved distance estimation. A simplified factor graph framework is employed to fuse heterogeneous measurements while maintaining computational efficiency suitable for real-time operation on mobile devices. Experimental validation using a robot-based ground-truth reference system demonstrates sub-meter localization accuracy with an average positioning error of approximately 0.40 m. The proposed method provides a low-cost and scalable solution for indoor positioning and navigation applications such as access-controlled environments, exhibitions, and large public venues. WiFi fingerprinting remains attractive for indoor localization because it reuses existing wireless infrastructure, yet RSSI fingerprints are high-dimensional, sparse, and often ambiguous across adjacent floors and building regions. This study develops a hybrid blended localization framework that combines multi-task learning with feature-space weighted k-nearest-neighbor refinement. A shared neural encoder predicts building labels, floor labels, and normalized coordinates from 520-dimensional WiFi fingerprints, and the learned embedding space is then used for semantically constrained WKNN correction. The final model is trained with AdamW, a learning rate of 8×104, batch size 512, and a joint loss over building classification, floor classification, and coordinate regression, without a learning-rate scheduler. Experiments on a public WiFi fingerprint dataset show that the hybrid model achieves the strongest overall localization robustness among the evaluated non-ensemble methods. On the official validation split, it obtains a mean localization error of 9.01, a median error of 6.25, and an RMSE of 12.95 in the dataset coordinate units. On the internal semantic validation split, it reaches 94.81% floor classification accuracy and 97.62% building classification accuracy. Floor-wise and building–floor analyses further show that the largest errors are concentrated in a small number of difficult semantic regions, especially the highest floor and sparsely constrained partitions. The rapid growth of large-scale Internet of Things (IoT) deployments in urban environments requires accurate and energy-efficient localization methods for low-power wireless devices. In long-range wide-area networks (LoRaWAN), traditional GPS-based positioning is often impractical due to energy consumption constraints and signal propagation challenges in urban areas. This study proposes a hybrid localization system that integrates weighted centroid localization (WCL) with a machine learning (ML) regression model to improve outdoor positioning accuracy. The proposed approach first estimates approximate transmitter coordinates using a physically grounded WCL method based on received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurements. These initial estimates are subsequently refined by ML models trained to learn nonlinear residual corrections. In addition to random partitioning, a spatial data splitting strategy is proposed and evaluated using a publicly available LoRaWAN dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that the hybrid WCL framework combined with a multilayer perceptron (MLP) significantly outperforms other ML models. The proposed method achieves a mean localization error of 160.47 m and a median error of 73.78 m. Compared to the baseline model, the integration of WCL reduces the mean localization error by approximately 29%, highlighting the effectiveness of incorporating physically interpretable priors into localization models. This paper presents an indoor self-localization framework for mobile robots, an essential component for automation in Industry 4.0 and smart environments. We evaluate a Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) fingerprinting technique utilizing Long-Range (LoRa) technology to overcome the challenges of congested indoor settings. To optimize communication parameters, the Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) was employed to select the most effective spreading factor, while the entropy of the RSSI database was calculated to verify fingerprint stability. For positional prediction, a Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network was developed to classify the location of the target within a grid-based experimental setup, featuring cells spaced 60 cm apart. The MLP achieved a validation accuracy of 91.8 percent during training and demonstrated high precision in classifying grid regions within a signal-dense environment. For scenarios where slow-moving robots (5 cm/s) are required, like radiation mapping, this method provide highly accurate high-level localization data.These results suggest that the proposed LoRa-MLP integration provides a robust, low-power solution for high-accuracy indoor positioning systems (IPSs) in modern industrial infrastructure. Indoor positioning in hospitals is challenging because global navigation satellite systems signals are unavailable and existing solutions struggle with complex indoor propagation and high maintenance requirements. Fingerprinting-based methods using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), or magnetic field depend on extensive site surveys, while time or angle-based systems such as ultra-wide band, angle of arrival, and Wi-Fi round trip time require additional infrastructure. Recent machine learning approaches improve performance but remain limited by Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) drift and unstable spatial representations. This study proposes an AI-generated spatial pattern matching framework that integrates an AI-based PDR model with BLE Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) to construct a user RSSI surface. Spatial similarity between user-generated patterns and the pre-built radio map is evaluated using Surface Correlation (SC), and a bi-directional candidate generation strategy with SC-based heading correction is employed to mitigate inertial drift. Experiments in a real hospital setting show that the proposed method achieves robust and accurate localization even in complex indoor environments where conventional fingerprinting and PDR techniques often fail. The results indicate that combining AI-driven inertial modeling with SC-based spatial pattern matching offers a practical and infrastructure-friendly solution for hospital indoor positioning. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) represent a paradigm shift in wireless communications, offering unprecedented control over electromagnetic wave propagation for next-generation 6G networks. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for high-precision indoor localization exploiting cooperative multi-RIS deployments. We introduce the adaptive multi-stage hybrid localization (AMSHL) algorithm, a novel approach that strategically combines fingerprinting-based and geometric time-difference-of-arrival (TDoA) methods through condition-aware adaptive fusion. The proposed framework employs a 4-RIS cooperative architecture with strategically positioned panels on room walls, enabling comprehensive spatial coverage and favorable geometric diversity. AMSHL incorporates five key innovations: (1) a hybrid fingerprint database combining received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and TDoA features for enhanced location distinctiveness; (2) a multi-stage cascaded refinement process progressing from coarse fingerprinting initialization through to iterative geometric optimization; (3) an adaptive fusion mechanism that dynamically adjusts algorithm weights based on real-time channel quality assessment including signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and geometric dilution of precision (GDOP); (4) a robust iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) solver with Huber M-estimation for outlier mitigation; and (5) Bayesian regularization incorporating fingerprinting estimates as informative priors. Comprehensive Monte Carlo simulations at 3.5 GHz carrier frequency with 400 MHz bandwidth demonstrate that AMSHL achieves a median localization error of 0.661 m, root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of 1.54 m, and mean-squared error (MSE) of 2.38 m2, with 87.5% probability of sub-2m accuracy, representing a 4.9× improvement over conventional hybrid fingerprinting in median error and a 7.1× reduction in MSE (from 16.83 m2 to 2.38 m2). An optional sigmoid-based fusion variant (AMSHL-S) further improves sub-2m accuracy to 89.4% by eliminating discrete switching artifacts. Furthermore, we provide theoretical analysis including Cramér–Rao lower bound (CRLB) derivation with an empirical MSE comparison to quantify the gap between practical algorithm performance and theoretical bounds (MSE-to-CRLB ratio of approximately 4.0×104), as well as a computational complexity assessment. All reported metrics have been cross-validated for internal consistency across formulas, tables, and textual descriptions; improvement factors and error statistics are verified against primary simulation outputs to ensure reproducibility. The complete simulation framework is made publicly available to facilitate reproducible research in RIS-aided positioning systems. Full article

Indoor localization finds wide-ranging applications in user navigation and intelligent building systems. Nevertheless, signal interference within complex indoor environments and challenges regarding localization generalization in multi-building and multi-floor scenarios have restricted the performance of traditional localization methods based on Wi-Fi fingerprinting. To tackle these issues, this paper presents the SE-MTCAELoc model, a multi-task convolutional autoencoder approach that integrates a squeeze-excitation (SE) attention mechanism for indoor positioning. Firstly, the method preprocesses Wi-Fi Received Signal Strength (RSSI) data. In the UJIIndoorLoc dataset, the 520-dimensional RSSI features are extended to 576 dimensions and reshaped into a 24 × 24 matrix. Meanwhile, Gaussian noise is introduced to enhance the robustness of the data. Subsequently, an integrated SE module combined with a convolutional autoencoder (CAE) is constructed. This module aggregates channel spatial information through squeezing operations and learns channel weights via excitation operations. It dynamically enhances key positioning features and suppresses noise. Finally, a multi-task learning architecture based on the SE-CAE encoder is established to jointly optimize building classification, floor classification, and coordinate regression tasks. Priority balancing is achieved using weighted losses (0.1 for building classification, 0.2 for floor classification, and 0.7 for coordinate regression). Experimental results on the UJIIndoorLoc dataset indicate that the accuracy of building classification reaches 99.57%, the accuracy of floor classification is 98.57%, and the mean absolute error (MAE) for coordinate regression is 5.23 m. Furthermore, the model demonstrates exceptional time efficiency. The cumulative training duration (including SE-CAE pre-training) is merely 9.83 min, with single-sample inference taking only 0.347 milliseconds, fully meeting the requirements of real-time indoor localization applications. On the TUT2018 dataset, the floor classification accuracy attains 98.13%, with an MAE of 6.16 m. These results suggest that the SE-MTCAELoc model can effectively enhance the localization accuracy and generalization ability in complex indoor scenarios and meet the localization requirements of multiple scenarios. Indoor WiFi fingerprint localization often suffers from abnormal fluctuations in received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurements and from the sensitivity of least-squares support vector machine (LSSVM) hyperparameters to local optima. To address these issues, this paper presents an improved end-to-end localization method that integrates fingerprint reconstruction with adaptive model optimization. First, a knowledge-enhanced anomaly detection and spatial fingerprint repair (KADSFR) model is used to enhance fingerprint database consistency by combining robust Mahalanobis distance, median absolute deviation, and local outlier factor for anomaly detection, followed by weighted k-nearest neighbors interpolation based on composite signal–physical distances. Then, an adaptive particle swarm optimization (APSO) scheme with stagnation detection and spatial exclusion mechanisms is employed to tune the LSSVM regularization coefficient and RBF kernel width under five-fold cross-validation. Experiments show that KADSFR improves fingerprint quality by approximately 10 percent, and the proposed method achieves an average error of 0.74 m, outperforming KNN, WKNN, LSSVM, and APSO-LSSVM by 63.5 percent, 62.8 percent, 34.5 percent, and 16.9 percent, respectively. The physical layer security of Internet of Things (IoT) networks has become increasingly important but also introduces major security vulnerabilities due to the open and shared nature of wireless channels. Therefore, authentication and authorization remain critical challenges. To address these issues, this paper proposes a lightweight hybrid authentication framework that integrates Extended Kalman Filter (EKF)-based signal refinement with machine learning (ML) classification to strengthen device trust verification at the physical layer. The framework operates across device, edge, and cloud tiers, utilizing real-time received signal strength indicator (RSSI), link quality indicator (LQI), temperature, and battery level to generate unique device fingerprints. The EKF minimizes environmental noise and extracts stable signal characteristics, while the XGBoost classifier provides adaptive and efficient authentication. Experimental results show that the proposed hybrid model achieves 99.56% accuracy, a 99.71% F1-score, and a very low false acceptance rate. These findings confirm that the EKF–ML integration enhances signal stability and resistance to spoofing, offering a secure and scalable authentication solution for IoT networks. Full article

Accurate indoor floor classification is essential for wireless positioning systems. However, the performance of conventional received signal strength indictor (RSSI)-based fingerprinting approaches is often limited by signal fluctuations and insufficient feature representation. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a heterogeneous graph neural network (GNN) framework that models WiFi signals using two types of nodes: reference points and Media Access Control (MAC) address. The edges between reference points and MAC addresses are weighted by normalized RSSI values, allowing the model to capture signal strength interactions and perform relation-aware message passing. Through this graph-based representation, the model can learn spatial and signal dependencies more effectively than conventional vector-based approaches. The proposed model was extensively evaluated under both benchmark and practical settings. On small-scale datasets, it achieved performance comparable to that of a conventional convolutional neural network trained on large-scale datasets, confirming its effectiveness with limited samples. In addition, the proposed model consistently outperformed other models under noisy conditions, achieving 93.88% accuracy on the widely used UJIIndoorLoc dataset and 97.3% accuracy in real-time experiments conducted at a test site. These values are significantly higher than those achieved using conventional machine learning (ML) baselines, highlighting the ability of the proposed model to handle real-world signal variations. These findings highlight that the heterogeneous GNN effectively captures spatial and signal-level dependencies, offering a robust and scalable solution for accurate indoor floor classification. Overall, this work presents a promising pathway for improving the performance and reliability of future wireless positioning systems. Full article

Among indoor positioning technologies, Wi-Fi fingerprinting using the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) is the most convenient and cost-effective method for indoor positioning. Instability and interference in wireless signal transmission cause significant variations in the RSSI, especially in a dynamic environment (DE). These factors hamper the accuracy of fingerprint-based indoor positioning system (IPSs), as these systems may struggle to reliably match observed signal patterns with stored fingerprints. Thus, ensuring positioning accuracy is critically important when designing and implementing Wi-Fi IPSs. Currently, there is a lack of surveys that provide a detailed and systematic analysis of the impact of DEs on the accuracy and reliability of Wi-Fi indoor positioning. This systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to examine three aspects of Wi-Fi indoor positioning based on the RSSI: the impact of a DE on indoor positioning accuracy, the importance of constructing radio maps for indoor localization, and the role of machine learning (ML)/deep learning (DL) models in predicting indoor position with minimal error despite the DE. This review was conducted according to a structured and well-defined methodology to search for and filter relevant studies on Wi-Fi indoor positioning using the RSSI. Through this systematic process, 128 papers (2018–2024) were identified as relevant and then extracted and thoroughly analyzed to effectively answer the specified research questions. Additionally, this review highlights gaps in existing research, suggests directions for future studies, and provides practical recommendations for enhancing Wi-Fi-based indoor positioning in DEs. Since GPS (Global Positioning System) cannot meet accuracy requirements indoors, indoor Location-Based Services (LBSs) have become increasingly important. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) offers cost and accuracy advantages. Typically, the position fingerprinting method is used for indoor positioning. However, due to irregular reflection and absorption, the indoor environment introduces various offsets in Bluetooth RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator). This study analyzed the RSSI space and proposed a pre-processing workflow to improve position estimation accuracy by correcting offsets in RSSI space for BLE fingerprinting methods using machine learning. Experiments performed using different position estimation methods showed that the corrected data achieved a 6% improvement over the filter-only result. This study also evaluated the effects of different pre-processing and post-processing filters on positioning accuracy. Experiments were also conducted using a published dataset and showed similar results. Full article

With the development of technologies and the growing need for accurate positioning inside buildings, the localization method based on Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) fingerprinting is becoming increasingly popular. Its popularity is explained by the relative simplicity of implementation, low cost and the ability to use existing wireless infrastructure. This review article covers all the key aspects of building such systems: from the wireless communication technology and the creation of a radiomap to data preprocessing methods and model training using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms. Specific recommendations are provided for each stage that can be useful for both researchers and practicing engineers. Particular attention is paid to such important issues as RSSI signal instability, the impact of multipath propagation, differences between devices and system scalability issues. In conclusion, the review highlights the most promising areas for further research. For smart cities, the approaches and recommendations presented in the review contribute to the development of urban services by combining indoor positioning systems with IoT platforms for automation, transport and energy management. In recent years, hidden IoT monitoring devices installed indoors have raised significant concerns about privacy breaches and other security threats. To address the challenges of detecting such devices, low positioning accuracy, and lengthy detection times, this paper proposes a hidden device detection and localization system that operates on the Android platform. This technology utilizes the Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) signals received by the detection terminal device to achieve the detection, classification, and localization of hidden IoT devices in unfamiliar environments. This technology integrates three key designs: (1) actively capturing the RSSI sequence of hidden devices by sending RTS frames and receiving CTS frames, which is used to generate device channel fingerprints and estimate the distance between hidden devices and detection terminals; (2) training an RSSI-based ranging model using the XGBoost algorithm, followed by multi-point localization for accurate positioning; (3) implementing augmented reality-based visual localization to support handheld detection terminals. This prototype system successfully achieves active data sniffing based on RTS/CTS and terminal localization based on the RSSI-based ranging model, effectively reducing signal acquisition time and improving localization accuracy. Real-world experiments show that the system can detect and locate hidden devices in unfamiliar environments, achieving an accuracy of 98.1% in classifying device types. The time required for detection and localization is approximately one-sixth of existing methods, with system runtime maintained within 5 min. The localization error is 0.77 m, a 48.7% improvement over existing methods with an average error of 1.5 m. Full article
