Graphene is the wonder material of the 21st century, promising cutting-edge advancements in material science with significant applications across all industries. This study investigates the use of a graphene-based nanomaterials (GBNs) ans trade-registered Hastalex®, as novel materials for surgical implants aimed at treating pelvic organ prolapse (POP). This study investigates the mechanical properties and physicochemical characteristics of the material, mainly focusing on its potential to address the limitations of existing polypropylene (PP) implants, which has been associated with numerous complications and banned across multiple countries. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) confirmed the bonding between functionalised graphene oxide (FGO) and the base polymer chain. Hastalex exhibited excellent mechanical properties with 58 N/mm2 maximum tensile strength at break and 701% elongation at break, whilst maintaining its shape with no plastic deformation. These results were comparable to that of sheep pelvic muscular tissue. Hastalex demonstrated its hydrophilic properties from contact angle measurements. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed a uniform plane with surface nanotopography, promoting cell-to-material interaction. The results confirmed the suitability of Hastalex in the development of a new pelvic membrane to treat POP. Full article

The ability of 2D hybrid structures formed by boron, nitrogen and carbon atoms (h-BNCs) to act as potential substrates for the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection of dioxin-like pollutants is theoretically analyzed. The strong confinement and high tunability of the electromagnetic response of the carbon nanostructures embedded within the h-BNC sheets point out that these hybrid structures could be promising for applications in optical spectroscopies, such as SERS. In this work, two model dioxin-like pollutants, TCDD and TCDF, and a model h-BNC surface composed of a carbon nanodisk of ninety-six atoms surrounded by a string of borazine rings, BNC96, are used to simulate the adsorption complexes and the static and pre-resonance Raman spectra of the adsorbed molecules. A high affinity of BNC96 for these pollutants is reflected by the large interaction energies obtained for the most stable stacking complexes, with dispersion being the most important contribution to their stability. The strong vibrational coupling of some active modes of TCDF and, specially, of TCDD causes the static Raman spectra to show a ”pure” chemical enhancement of one order of magnitude. On the other hand, due to the strong electromagnetic response of BNC96, confined within the carbon nanodisk, the pre-resonance Raman spectra obtained for TCDD and TCDF display large enhancement factors of 108 and 107, respectively. Promisingly, laser excitation wavelengths commonly used in SERS experiments also induce significant Raman enhancements of around 104 for the TCDD and TCDF signals. Both the strong confinement of the electromagnetic response within the carbon domains and the high modulation of the resonance wavelengths in the visible and/or UV region in h-BNCs should lead to a higher sensitivity than that of graphene and white graphene parent structures, thus overcoming one of the main disadvantages of using 2D substrates for SERS applications. Background: Polypropylene (PP) pelvic mesh is a synthetic mesh made of PP polymer used to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Its use has become highly controversial due to reports of serious complications. This research critically reviews the current management options for POP and PP mesh as a viable clinical application for the treatment of POP. The safety and suitability of PP material were rigorously studied and critically evaluated, with consideration to the mechanical and chemical properties of PP. We proposed the ideal properties of the ‘perfect’ synthetic pelvic mesh with emerging advanced materials. Methods: We performed a literature review using PubMed/Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library (Wiley) databases, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases, including the relevant keywords: pelvic organ prolapse (POP), polypropylene mesh, synthetic mesh, and mesh complications. Results: The results of this review found that although PP is nontoxic, its physical properties demonstrate a significant mismatch between its viscoelastic properties compared to the surrounding tissue, which is a likely cause of complications. In addition, a lack of integration of PP mesh into surrounding tissue over longer periods of follow up is another risk factor for irreversible complications. Conclusions: PP mesh has caused a rise in reports of complications involving chronic pain and mesh exposure. This is due to the mechanical and physicochemical properties of PP mesh. As a result, PP mesh for the treatment of POP has been banned in multiple countries, currently with no alternative available. We propose the development of a pelvic mesh using advanced materials including emerging graphene-based nanocomposite materials. Full article

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have adverse effects on the human health and ecosystem functioning. Graphene oxide (GO) has been developed to remove trace levels of POPs from wastewater samples. However, many questions involved in these processes are still unresolved (e.g., the role of π–π interaction, the effect of GO on the degradation of POPs, and so on). Revealing the microscopic interactions between GO and POPs is of benefit to resolve these questions. In the present study, a quantum chemical calculation was used to calculate the molecular doping and adsorption energy between eight representative POPs and GO. The influences of GO on the thermodynamic parameters, such as the Gibbs free energy and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gap, were also reported. We found the molecular doping is dependent on the species of POPs. The adsorption energy of the majority of POPs on GO is between 7 and 8 kJ/mol. Consequently, the GO may make degradation of POPs in wastewater more productive and lead to a change of kinetics of the degradation of POPs. Full article

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phenolic compounds had been widely recognized as priority organic pollutants in wastewater with toxic effects on both plants and animals. Thus, the remediation of these pollutants has been an active area of research in the field of environmental science and engineering. This review highlighted the advantage of adsorption technology in the removal of PAHs and phenols in wastewater. The literature presented on the applications of various porous carbon materials such as biochar, activated carbon (AC), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene as potential adsorbents for these pollutants has been critically reviewed and analyzed. Under similar conditions, the use of porous polymers such as Chitosan and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been well presented. The high adsorption capacities of advanced porous materials such as mesoporous silica and metal-organic frameworks have been considered and evaluated. The preference of these materials, higher adsorption efficiencies, mechanism of adsorptions, and possible challenges have been discussed. Recommendations have been proposed for commercialization, pilot, and industrial-scale applications of the studied adsorbents towards persistent organic pollutants (POPs) removal from wastewater. In this paper, we report the results of hydrogen adsorption properties of a new 2D carbon-based material, consisting of pentagons and octagons (Penta-Octa-Penta-graphene or POP-graphene), based on the Grand-Canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The new material exhibits a moderately higher gravimetric uptake at cryogenic temperatures (77 K), as compared to the regular graphene. We discuss the origin of the enhanced uptake of POP-graphene and offer a consistent explanation. Full article

On a long path of finding appropriate materials to store hydrogen, graphene and carbon nanotubes have drawn a lot of attention as potential storage materials. Their advantages lie at hand since those materials provide a large surface area (which can be used for physisorption), are cheap compared to metal hydrides, are abundant nearly everywhere, and most importantly, can increase safety to existing storage solutions. Therefore, a great variety of theoretical studies were employed to study those materials. After a benchmark study of different van-der-Waals corrections to Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA), the present Density Functional Theory (DFT) study employs Tkatchenko–Scheffler (TS) correction to study the influence of vacancy and Stone–Wales defects in graphene on the physisorption of the hydrogen molecule. Furthermore, we investigate a large-angle (1,0) grain boundary as well as the adsorption behaviour of Penta-Octa-Penta (POP)-graphene. Full article
