Facies-Controlled Sedimentary Distribution and Hydrocarbon Control of Lower Cretaceous Source Rocks in the Northern Persian Gulf

The two-phase source rocks deposited during the Lower Cretaceous in the Persian Gulf Basin play a pivotal role in the regional hydrocarbon system. However, previous studies have lacked a macroscopic perspective constrained by the Tethyan Ocean context, which has limited a deeper understanding of their developmental patterns and hydrocarbon control mechanisms. To address this issue, this study aims to clarify the spatiotemporal evolution of the two-phase source rocks and their hydrocarbon control effects, with a particular emphasis on the critical impact of terrestrial input on the quality improvement of source rocks. Unlike previous studies that relied on a single research method, this study employed a comprehensive approach, including time series analysis, sequence stratigraphy, lithofacies, well logging, well correlation, seismic data, and geochemical analysis, to systematically compare and analyze the depositional periods, distribution, and characteristics of the two-phase source rocks under different sedimentary facies in the region. The goal was to reveal the intrinsic relationship between the Neo-Tethyan Ocean context and regional sedimentary responses. The results indicate the following: (1) the late Tithonian–Berriasian and Aptian–Albian source rocks in the Northern Persian Gulf were deposited during periods of extensive marine transgression, closely aligning with the global Weissert and OAE1d anoxic events, reflecting the profound impact of global environmental changes on regional sedimentary processes; (2) in the early stages of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean, controlled by residual topography, the Late Tithonian–Berriasian source rocks exhibited a shelf–intrashelf basin facies association, with the intrashelf basin showing higher TOC, lower HI, and higher Ro values compared to the deep shelf facies, indicating more favorable conditions for organic matter enrichment; (3) with the opening and deepening of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean, the Aptian–Albian source rocks at the end of the Lower Cretaceous transitioned to a shelf–basin facies association, with the basin facies showing superior organic matter characteristics compared to the shelf facies; (4) the organic matter content, type, and thermal maturity of the two-phase source rocks are primarily controlled by sedimentary facies and terrestrial input, with the Aptian–Albian source rocks in areas with terrestrial input showing significantly better quality than those without, confirming the decisive role of terrestrial input in improving source rock quality. In summary, this study not only reveals the differences in the depositional environments and hydrocarbon control mechanisms of the two-phase source rocks, but also highlights the core role of terrestrial input in enhancing source rock quality. The findings provide a basis for facies selection in deep natural gas exploration in the Zagros Belt and shale oil exploration in the western Rub’ al-Khali Basin, offering systematic theoretical guidance and practical insights for hydrocarbon exploration in the Persian Gulf and broader tectonic domains. Coastal blue carbon ecosystems sequester carbon, storing it as plant biomass and particulate organic matter in sediments. Recent studies emphasize the importance of incorporating dissolved inorganic and organic forms into carbon assessments. As sediment-stored organic matter decomposes, it releases dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA), both of which are critical for regulating the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and thus carbon sequestration. This study investigated the role of benthic DIC and TA fluxes in carbon sequestration within seagrass meadows in Dongsha Island’s inner lagoon (IL) during the winter and summer seasons. Chamber incubation experiments revealed elevated benthic DIC and TA fluxes compared to global averages (107 ± 75.9 to 119 ± 144 vs. 1.3 ± 1.06 mmol m−2 d−1 for DIC, and 69.7 ± 40.7 to 75.8 ± 81.5 vs. 0.52 ± 0.43 mmol m−2 d−1 for TA). Despite DIC fluxes being approximately 1.5 times higher than TA fluxes, water pCO2 levels remained low (149 ± 26 to 156 ± 18 µatm). Mass balance calculations further indicated that benthic DIC was predominantly reabsorbed into plant biomass through photosynthesis (−135 to −128 mmol m−2 d−1). Conversely, TA accumulated in the water and was largely exported (−60.3 to −53.7 mmol m−2 d−1), demonstrating natural ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE). This study highlights the crucial role of IL seagrass meadows in coastal carbon sequestration through net autotrophy and carbonate dissolution. Future research should explore the global implications of these processes and assess the potential of natural OAE in other coastal blue carbon ecosystems. Full article

Studies about the effects of SARS-CoV-2 on pregnant women and children born to positive women are controversial with regard to possible inner ear-related damage but most of them do not detect the involvement of this virus in auditory function. However, only a few studies on long-term effects on language development are currently available because of the recent onset of the pandemic. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on perceptual and expressive abilities and the emerging development of communication in young children. To this purpose, the MacArthur–Bates Communicative Development Inventory—Words and Gestures form (CDI-WG), was administered to parents. In total, 115 children whose mother was infected by SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy were enrolled in the study and evaluated at the Audiology Service of the Modena University Hospital. All children underwent Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) at birth: 114/115 had a “pass” result bilaterally, while 1 case had a unilateral “refer” result. Overall, 110/115 newborns (95.65%) underwent audiological evaluation between 10–18 months of age. In 5/110 patients (3.6%), the Pure Tone Average (PTA) result was equal to 35 dB; one case had a hearing threshold of around 50 dB due to a bilateral effusive otitis media. A notable finding was the percentage of children with tubal dysfunction in both evaluations, within 2 months of age and around 12 months of age. Most children revealed normal hearing. The CDI-WG was completed by 56/115 families. The rate of children below the fifth percentile was 8.9% for sentences understood, 12.5% for words understood, and 5.4% for words produced. Concerning CDI-Gestures, only 2 children (3.6%) were below the fifth percentile. A structured audiological follow-up in association with the evaluation of communication skills of children appears fundamental, particularly in the years of maximum neuroplasticity. Long-term studies are still necessary to evaluate the possible consequences of the pandemic. Full article

Background: In order to better understand the pathophysiology of surgically induced hearing loss after vestibular schwannoma (VS) surgery, we postoperatively analyzed the hearing status in a series of patients where hearing was at least partially preserved. Methods: Hearing was assessed through tonal audiometry, speech discrimination score, maximum word recognition score (dissyllabic word lists—MaxIS), otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), and auditory brainstem response (ABR). The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tumor characterization was also noted. Results: In a series of 24 patients operated on for VS over 5 years, depending on the results of this triple hearing exploration, we could identify, after surgery, patients with either a myelin alteration or partial damage to the acoustic fibers, others with a likely partial cochlear ischemia, and some with partial cochlear nerve ischemia. One case with persisting OAEs and no preoperative ABR recovered hearing and ABR after surgery. Long follow-up (73 ± 57 months) revealed a mean hearing loss of 30 ± 20 dB with a drastic drop of MaxIS. MRI revealed only 25% of fundus invasion. Conclusion: a precise analysis of hearing function, not only with classic audiometry but also with ABR and OEAs, allows for a better understanding of hearing damage in VS surgery. Full article

The oceanic anoxic events (OAEs) are characterized by enhanced accumulation of organic matter in marine sediments. However, there is still an ongoing debate regarding the interplay between production and preservation during these events. Moreover, few studies provide quantitative estimations of primary productivity and/or the amount of carbon preserved during the OAEs. Here, we used geochemical data from multiple wells located at the Espírito Santo Basin that cover the intervals of events OAE1d and OAE2 to provide quantitative estimates of preservation factors. Our results show enhanced preservation during OAEs compared to modern conditions and a stronger preservation during OAE1d compared to OAE2 in the Espírito Santo Basin. The amount of preserved carbon could reach up to 8.6% during OAE1d, depending on the productivity of the system. In addition, we show that such improvement in preservation is linked to the bottom water with low-O2 concentrations and not due to fast burial caused by high sedimentation rates. Our findings are extremally relevant for organic carbon and source rock modelling studies since model simulations need quantitative estimations. Full article

Simultaneous aflatoxin (AFB1) and zearalenone (ZEN) contamination in agro-products have become widespread globally and have a toxic superposition effect. In the present study, we describe a highly sensitive and specific dual lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (dual test strip) for rapid and simultaneous detection of AFB1 and ZEN in food and feed samples based on respective monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Two immunogens AFB1-BSA (an AFB1 and bovine serum albumin (BSA) conjugate) and ZEN-BSA (a ZEN and BSA conjugate) were synthesized in oximation active ester (OAE) and amino glutaraldehyde (AGA). The molecular binding ratio of AFB1:BSA was 8.64:1, and that of ZEN:BSA was 17.2:1, identified by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and an ultraviolet spectrometer (UV). The hybridoma cell lines 2A11, 2F6, and 3G2 for AFB1 and 2B6, 4D9 for ZEN were filtered by an indirect non-competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (inELISA) and an indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (icELISA), respectively. As AFB1 mAb 2A11 and ZEN mAb 2B6 had the lowest 50% inhibitive concentration (IC50) and cross-reactivity (CR), they were selected for subsequent experiments. By systematically optimizing the preparation condition of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), AuNPs-labeled mAbs, and detection condition, the visual limit of detection (LOD) of the dual test strip was 1.0 μg/L for AFB1 and 5.0 μg/L for ZEN, whereas that of the test strip reader was 0.23 μg/L for AFB1 and 1.53 μg/L for ZEN. The high reproducibility and stability of the dual test were verified using mycotoxin-spiked samples. The dual test strips were highly specific and sensitive for AFB1 and ZEN, which were validated using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Thus, the proposed AFB1 and ZEN dual test strip is suitable for rapid and simultaneous detection of AFB1 and ZEN contamination in food and feed samples. Full article

Zearalenone (ZEN) contamination in food and feed is prevalent and has severe effects on humans and animals post-consumption. Therefore, a sensitive, specific, rapid, and reliable method for detecting a single residue of ZEN is necessary. This study aimed to establish a highly sensitive and specific ZEN monoclonal antibody (mAb) and an indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (icELISA) for the detection of ZEN residues in food and feed. The immunogen ZEN-BSA was synthesized via the amino glutaraldehyde (AGA) and amino diazotization (AD) methods and identified using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), a high-resolution mass spectrometer (HRMS), and an ultraviolet spectrometer (UV). The coating antigens ZEN-OVA were synthesized via the oxime active ester (OAE), formaldehyde (FA), 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDE), AGA, and AD methods. These methods were used to screen the best antibody/antigen combination of a heterologous icELISA. Balb/c mice were immunized with a low ZEN-BSA dose at long intervals and multiple sites. Suitable cell fusion mice and positive hybridoma cell lines were screened using a homologous indirect non-competitive ELISA (inELISA) and an icELISA. The ZEN mAbs were prepared by inducing ascites in vivo. The immunological characteristics of ZEN mAbs were then assessed. The standard curves of the icELISA for ZEN were constructed under optimal experimental conditions, and the performance of the icELISA was validated. The two ZEN-BSA immunogens (conjugation ratios, 11.6:1 (AGA) and 9.2:1 (AD)) were successfully synthesized. Four hybridoma cell lines (2B6, 4D9, 1A10, and 4G8) were filtered, of which 2B6 had the best sensitivity and specificity. The mAb 2B6-based icELISA was then developed. The limit of detection (LOD), the 50% inhibitive concentration (IC50), and the linear working range (IC20 to IC80) values of the icELISA were 0.76 μg/L, 8.69 μg/L, and 0.92–82.24 μg/L, respectively. The cross-reactivity (CR) of the icELISA with the other five analogs of ZEN was below 5%. Three samples were spiked with different concentrations of ZEN and detected using the icELISA. The average intra-assay recoveries, inter-assay recoveries, intra-assay coefficients of variations (CVs), and inter-assay CVs were 93.48–99.48%, 94.18–96.13%, 12.55–12.98%, and 12.53–13.58%, respectively. The icELISA was used to detect ZEN in various samples. The results were confirmed using high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) (correlation coefficient, 0.984). The proposed icELISA was highly sensitive, specific, rapid, and reliable for the detection of ZEN in food and feed samples. Full article

Interpretations of sea-level changes over geological time are mainly based on analyses of sediments deposited within stable platforms. One of the criteria for recognizing these changes is the composition of skeleton-bearing protists living in environments close to the shoreline and on the continental shelf. It can be assumed that the source of information about sea-level changes may also be found in assemblages of microfossils redeposited from the shelf to the marginal ocean basin. With such an assumption, this article presents an interpretation of changes in marine plankton communities (radiolarians and planktonic foraminifera), which during late Albian–middle Cenomanian were redeposited with carbonate mud by gravity currents from the peri-Tethyan shelf to the northern, marginal Silesian Basin of the Western Tethys. Planktonic biota identified in sediments deposited by gravity flows and those found in hemipelagic shales separating them, indicate that their composition may be correlated with eustatic changes in the sea level from the late Albian (KAl8) to middle Cenomanian (KCe3). This study aimed to detect and monitor total Zearalenone (ZEN) and its five homologs (ZENs) in cereals and feed. The monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) with a high affinity and broad class specificity against ZENs were prepared, and the conditions of a heterologous indirect competitive ELISA (icELISA) were preliminarily optimized based on the ZEN mAbs. The immunogen ZEN-BSA was synthesized using the oxime active ester method (OAE) and identified using infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV). The coating antigen ZEN-OVA was obtained via the 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether method (BDE). Balb/c mice were immunized using a high ZEN-BSA dose with long intervals and at multiple sites. A heterologous indirect non-competitive ELISA (inELISA) and an icELISA were used to screen the suitable cell fusion mice and positive hybridoma cell lines. The ZEN mAbs were prepared by inducing ascites in vivo. The standard curve was established, and the sensitivity and specificity of the ZEN mAbs were determined under the optimized icELISA conditions. ZEN-BSA was successfully synthesized at a conjugation ratio of 17.2:1 (ZEN: BSA). Three hybridoma cell lines, 2D7, 3C2, and 4A10, were filtered, and their mAbs corresponded to an IgG1 isotype with a κ light chain. The mAbs titers were between (2.56 to 5.12) × 102 in supernatants and (1.28 to 5.12) × 105 in the ascites. Besides, the 50% inhibitive concentration (IC50) values were from 18.65 to 31.92 μg/L in the supernatants and 18.12 to 31.46 μg/L in the ascites. The affinity constant (Ka) of all of the mAbs was between 4.15 × 109 and 6.54 × 109 L/mol. The IC50 values of mAb 2D7 for ZEN, α-ZEL, β-ZEL, α-ZAL, β-ZAL and ZAN were 17.23, 16.71, 18.27, 16.39, 20.36 and 15.01 μg/L, and their cross-reactivities (CRs, %) were 100%, 103.11%, 94.31%, 105.13%, 84.63%, and 114.79%, respectively, under the optimized icELISA conditions. The limit of detection (LOD) for ZEN was 0.64 μg/L, and its linear working range was between 1.03 and 288.55 μg/L. The mAbs preparation and the optimization of icELISA conditions promote the potential development of a rapid test ELISA kit, providing an alternative method for detecting ZEN and its homologs in cereals and feed. (1) Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of hearing loss in school-age children from rural and urban areas of mid-eastern Poland using standard audiological tests—pure tone audiometry (PTA), impedance audiometry (IA), and otoacoustic emissions (OAEs). (2) Methods: Data were collected from a group of 250 children aged 8 to 13, made up of 122 children from urban areas and 128 children from rural areas of mid-eastern Poland. Hearing was assessed in each of the subjects by means of PTA, IA (tympanometry), and transient-evoked OAEs (TEOAEs). Otoscopy was also performed. (3) Results: There were significantly fewer abnormal results in children from urban than rural areas: they were, respectively, 10.1% and 23.1% for IA, 3% and 9.7% for PTA, and 17.3% and 31.8% for TEOAEs. For hearing-impaired ears in rural areas (failed TEOAE), hearing thresholds were, on average, 11.5 dB higher at 0.5 kHz than for children in urban areas. Comparison of each PTA result with the corresponding IA showed that all cases of hearing loss were related to malfunction of the middle ear. (4) Conclusions: The results of all three hearing tests were significantly worse in children from rural areas compared to those from urban areas. This indicates that audiological healthcare in rural areas needs improvement and that universal hearing screening programs for school-age children would be helpful. Full article
