Soil environmental quality in arid oases is crucial for regional ecological security but faces multi-source heavy metal (HM) contamination risks. This study aimed to (1) characterize the spatial distribution of soil HMs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, and Zn) in the Ka Shi gar oasis, Xinjiang, (2) quantify the driving effect of irrigation water, and (3) elucidate interactions between HMs, soil properties, and land use types. Using 591 soil and 12 irrigation water samples, spatial patterns were mapped via inverse distance weighting interpolation, with drivers and interactions analyzed through correlation and land use comparisons. Results revealed significant spatial heterogeneity in HMs with no consistent regional trend: As peaked in arable land (5.27–40.20 μg/g) influenced by parent material and agriculture, Cd posed high ecological risk in gardens (max 0.29 μg/g), and Zn reached exceptional levels (412.00 μg/g) in gardens linked to industry/fertilizers. Irrigation water impacts were HM-specific: water contributed to soil As enrichment, whereas high water Cr did not elevate soil Cr (indicating industrial dominance), and Cd/Cu showed no significant link. Interactions with soil properties were regulated by land use: in arable land, As correlated positively with EC/TN and negatively with pH; in gardens, HMs generally decreased with pH, enhancing mobility risk; in forests, SOM adsorption immobilized HMs; in construction land, Hg correlated with SOM/TP, suggesting industrial-organic synergy. This study advances understanding by demonstrating that HM enrichment arises from natural and anthropogenic factors, with the spatial heterogeneity of irrigation water’s driving effect critically regulated by land use type, providing a spatially explicit basis for targeted pollution control and sustainable oasis management. Wireless sensor networks have become a vital technology that is extensively applied across multiple industries, including agriculture, industrial operations, and smart cities, as well as residential smart homes and environmental monitoring systems. Security threats emerge in these systems through hidden routing-level attacks such as Wormhole and Sinkhole attacks. The aim of this research was to develop a methodology for detecting security incidents in WSNs by conducting real-time analysis of Wormhole and Sinkhole attacks. Furthermore, the paper proposes a novel detection methodology combined with architectural enhancements to improve network robustness, measured by hop counts, delays, false data ratios, and route integrity. A real-time WSN infrastructure was developed using ZigBee and Global System for Mobile Communications/General Packet Radio Service (GSM/GPRS) technologies. To realistically simulate Wormhole and Sinkhole attack scenarios and conduct evaluations, we developed a modular cyber–physical architecture that supports real-time monitoring, repeatability, and integration of ZigBee- and GSM/GPRS-based attacker nodes. During the experimentation, Wormhole attacks caused the hop count to decrease from 4 to 3, while the average delay increased by 40%, and false sensor readings were introduced in over 30% of cases. Additionally, Sinkhole attacks led to a 27% increase in traffic concentration at the malicious node, disrupting load balancing and route integrity. The proposed multi-stage methodology includes data collection, preprocessing, anomaly detection using the 3-sigma rule, and risk-based decision making. Simulation results demonstrated that the methodology successfully detected route shortening, packet loss, and data manipulation in real time. Thus, the integration of anomaly-based detection with ZigBee and GSM/GPRS enables a timely response to security threats in critical WSN deployments. Full article

Anomaly detection in industrial imaging is critical for ensuring quality and reliability in automated manufacturing processes. While recently several methods have been reported in the literature that have demonstrated impressive detection performance on standard benchmarks, they necessarily rely on computationally intensive CNN architectures and post-processing techniques, necessitating access to high-end GPU hardware and limiting practical deployment in resource-constrained settings. In this study, we introduce a novel anomaly detection framework that leverages feature maps from a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) backbone, MobileNetV2, and cascaded detection to achieve notable accuracy as well as computational efficiency. The core of our method consists of two main components. First is a PCA-based anomaly detection module that specifically exploits near-zero variance features. Contrary to traditional PCA methods, which tend to focus on the high-variance directions that encapsulate the dominant patterns in normal data, our approach demonstrates that the lower variance directions (which are typically ignored) form an approximate null space where normal samples project near zero. However, the anomalous samples, due to their inherent deviations from the norm, lead to projections with significantly higher magnitudes in this space. This insight not only enhances sensitivity to true anomalies but also reduces computational complexity by eliminating the need for operations such as matrix inversion or the calculation of Mahalanobis distances for correlated features otherwise needed when normal behavior is modeled as Gaussian distribution. Second, our framework consists of a cascaded multi-stage decision process. Instead of combining features across layers, we treat the local features extracted from each layer as independent stages within a cascade. This cascading mechanism not only simplifies the computations at each stage by quickly eliminating clear cases but also progressively refines the anomaly decision, leading to enhanced overall accuracy. Experimental evaluations on MVTec and VisA benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed approach achieves superior anomaly detection performance (99.4% and 91.7% AUROC respectively) while maintaining a lower computational overhead compared to other methods. This framework provides a compelling solution for practical anomaly detection challenges in diverse application domains where competitive accuracy is needed at the expense of minimal hardware resources. This study investigates the production and economic feasibility of biochar for smallholder and family farms in Central Amazonia, with potential implications for other tropical regions. The costs of construction of a prototype mobile kiln and biochar production were evaluated, using small-sized biomass from acai (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) agro-industrial residues as feedstock. The biochar produced was characterised in terms of its liming capacity (calcium carbonate equivalence, CaCO3eq), nutrient content via organic fertilisation methods, and ash analysis by ICP-OES. Field trials with cowpea assessed economic outcomes, as well scenarios of fractional biochar application and cost comparison between biochar production in the prototype kiln and a traditional earth-brick kiln. The prototype kiln showed production costs of USD 0.87–2.06 kg−1, whereas traditional kiln significantly reduced costs (USD 0.03–0.08 kg−1). Biochar application alone increased cowpea revenue by 34%, while combining biochar and lime raised cowpea revenues by up to 84.6%. Owing to high input costs and the low value of the crop, the control treatment generated greater net revenue compared to treatments using lime alone. Moreover, biochar produced in traditional kilns provided a 94% increase in net revenue compared to liming. The estimated externalities indicated that carbon credits represented the most significant potential source of income (USD 2217 ha−1). Finally, fractional biochar application in ten years can retain over 97% of soil carbon content, demonstrating potential for sustainable agriculture and carbon sequestration and a potential further motivation for farmers if integrated into carbon markets. Public policies and technological adaptations are essential for facilitating biochar adoption by small-scale tropical farmers. Full article

Significant improvements in the forest-based industrial sector are expected due to increased digitalization; however, examples of practical implementations remain limited. This study explores the use of an automated algorithm to estimate truckload volumes based on 3D point cloud data acquired using two different LiDAR scanning platforms. This research compares the performance of a professional mobile laser scanning (MLS GeoSLAM) platform and a smartphone-based iPhone LiDAR system. A total of 48 truckloads were measured using a combination of manual, factory-based, and digital approaches. Accuracy was evaluated using standard error metrics, including the mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE), with manual or factory references used as benchmarks. The results showed a strong correlation and no significant differences between the algorithmic and manual measurements when using the MLS platform (MAE = 2.06 m3; RMSE = 2.46 m3). For the iPhone platform, the results showed higher deviations and significant overestimation compared to the factory reference (MAE = 3.29 m3; RMSE = 3.60 m3). Despite these differences, the iPhone platform offers real-time acquisition and low-cost deployment. These findings highlight the trade-offs between precision and operational efficiency and support the adoption of automated measurement tools in timber supply chains. Full article

Al-Mg-Si (6XXX) series aluminum alloys are widely applied in aerospace and transportation industries. However, exploring how varying compositions affect alloy properties and deformation mechanisms is often time-consuming and labor-intensive due to the complexity of the multicomponent composition space and the diversity of processing and heat treatments. This study, inspired by the Materials Genome Initiative, employs high-throughput experimentation—specifically the kinetic diffusion multiple (KDM) method—to systematically investigate how the pop-in effect, indentation size effect (ISE), and creep behavior vary with the composition of Al-Mg-Si alloys at room temperature. To this end, a 6016/Al-3Si/Al-1.2Mg/Al KDM material was designed and fabricated. After diffusion annealing at 530 °C for 72 h, two junction areas were formed with compositional and microstructural gradients extending over more than one thousand micrometers. Subsequent solution treatment (530 °C for 30 min) and artificial aging (185 °C for 20 min) were applied to simulate industrial processing conditions. Comprehensive characterization using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), nanoindentation with continuous stiffness measurement (CSM), and nanoindentation creep tests across these gradient regions revealed key insights. The results show that increasing Mg and Si content progressively suppresses the pop-in effect. When the alloy composition exceeds 1.0 wt.%, the pop-in events are nearly eliminated due to strong interactions between solute atoms and mobile dislocations. In addition, adjustments in the ISE enabled rapid evaluation of the strengthening contributions from Mg and Si in the microscale compositional array, demonstrating that the optimum strengthening occurs when the Mg-to-Si atomic ratio is approximately 1 under a fixed total alloy content. Furthermore, analysis of the creep stress exponent and activation volume indicated that dislocation motion is the dominant creep mechanism. Overall, this enhanced KDM method proves to be an effective conceptual tool for accelerating the study of composition–deformation relationships in Al-Mg-Si alloys. Full article

Based on a comprehensive review of the current research status of ecological compensation both domestically and internationally, combined with field survey data, this study delves into the issue of multi-stakeholder participation in the ecological compensation mechanisms of the Xin’an River Basin. This research reveals that the joint participation of multiple stakeholders is crucial to achieving the goals of ecological compensation in river basins. The government plays a significant role in macro-guidance, financial support, policy guarantees, supervision, and management. It promotes the comprehensive implementation of ecological environmental protection by formulating relevant laws and regulations, guiding the public to participate in ecological conservation, and supervising and punishing pollution behaviors. The public, serving as the main force, forms strong awareness and behavioral habits of ecological protection through active participation in environmental protection, monitoring, and feedback. As participants, enterprises contribute to industrial transformation and green development by improving resource utilization efficiency, reducing pollution emissions, promoting green industries, and participating in ecological restoration projects. Scientific research institutions, as technology enablers, have effectively enhanced governance efficiency through technological research and innovation, ecosystem value accounting to provide decision-making support, and public education. Social organizations, as facilitators, have injected vitality and innovation into watershed governance by extensively mobilizing social forces and building multi-party collaboration platforms. Communities, as supporters, have transformed ecological value into economic benefits by developing characteristic industries such as eco-agriculture and eco-tourism. Based on the above findings, further recommendations are proposed to mobilize the enthusiasm of upstream communities and encourage their participation in ecological compensation, promote the market-oriented operation of ecological compensation mechanisms, strengthen cross-regional cooperation to establish joint mechanisms, enhance supervision and evaluation, and establish a sound benefit-sharing mechanism. These recommendations provide theoretical support and practical references for ecological compensation worldwide. Full article

Smart cities are technologically advanced urban environments where interconnected systems and data-driven technologies enhance public service delivery and quality of life. These cities rely on information and communication technologies, the Internet of Things, big data, cloud computing, and other Industry 4.0 tools to support efficient city management and foster citizen engagement. Often referred to as digital cities, they integrate intelligent infrastructures and real-time data analytics to improve mobility, security, and sustainability. Ubiquitous sensors, paired with Artificial Intelligence, enable cities to monitor infrastructure, respond to residents’ needs, and optimize urban conditions dynamically. Given the increasing significance of Industry 4.0 in urban development, this study adopts a bibliometric approach to systematically review the application of these technologies within smart cities. Utilizing major academic databases such as Scopus and Web of Science the research aims to identify the primary Industry 4.0 technologies implemented in smart cities, assess their impact on infrastructure, economic systems, and urban communities, and explore the challenges and benefits associated with their integration. The bibliometric analysis included publications from 2016 to 2023, since the emergence of urban researchers’ interest in the technologies of the new industrial revolution. The task is to contribute to a deeper understanding of how smart cities evolve through the adoption of advanced technological frameworks. Research indicates that IoT and AI are the most commonly used tools in urban spaces, particularly in smart mobility and smart environments. Full article

Understanding human behavior is crucial for accurately predicting Electricity Load Demand (ELD), as daily habits and routines directly influence electricity consumption patterns across temporal and spatial domains. Two approaches for representing human mobility are explored: (i) incorporating location-based Human Dynamics (HD) data, and (ii) leveraging electricity consumption data from different contract types—Low Voltage (LV) for residential areas and High Voltage (HV) for industrial and office spaces. This study investigates which of these representations allows deep learning models to better capture the influence of human mobility on LV consumption. Focusing on mesh-level predictions, our experiments demonstrate that combining LV and HV data can reduce the spatiotemporal prediction error (STPE) of LV consumption by an average of 13.37%. Similarly, integrating HD data with LV can achieve a 14.3% average reduction in STPE for sufficiently large areas. While combining all three—LV, HV, and HD—can improve consistency across different areas, it does not universally lower the overall prediction error. Importantly, these experiments suggest that HV data provides more reliable results across various configurations, particularly in urban regions with strong business activity. In contrast, HD data is more effective for widespread regions characterized by significant human movement or densely populated areas. This study highlights the complementary roles of HV and HD data in improving spatiotemporal LV consumption predictions and offers valuable insights into tailoring feature selection based on area characteristics and forecasting objectives. Transportation is often cited as a significant barrier to healthcare access by Veterans, particularly those from minority groups, who have disabilities, or live in rural areas. Autonomous shuttles (AS) offer a potential solution, yet limited research has explored Veterans’ experiences with this technology. This study qualitatively investigated Veterans’ lived experiences with AS through focus groups, enrolling participants aged 18+ from Gainesville, The Villages, and Lake Nona, Florida. Via a directed content analysis, six key themes were identified: Perceived Benefits, Safety, Experience with Autonomous Vehicles (AV), AS Experience, AV Adoption, and Perception Change. Among 26 participants (aged 30–85; 77% men; 88% urban residents), prominent themes included Safety (n = 161), Perceived Benefits (n = 153), and AS Experience (n = 118), with predominantly positive counts in all themes except AS Experience. Participants acknowledged safety advantages and multitasking potential of AS over human-operated vehicles while recommending improvements to the shuttle’s slow speed, availability and convenience. While the AS ride was positively received overall, some participants noted issues with comfort and braking, emphasizing the need for further technological enhancements. Real-world exposure to AS appeared to influence acceptance positively, offering insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders aiming to optimize AS deployment for mobility-vulnerable Veterans. Petrochemical complexes are spatially expansive and host diverse emission sources, making accurate monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) challenging using conventional two-dimensional methods. This study introduces Mobile-extraction Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (Me-DOAS), a real-time, three-dimensional remote sensing technique for assessing benzene emissions in the Ulsan petrochemical complex, South Korea. A vehicle-mounted Me-DOAS system conducted monthly measurements throughout 2024, capturing data during four daily intervals to evaluate diurnal variation. Routes included perimeter loops and grid-based transects within core industrial zones. The highest benzene concentrations were observed in February (mean: 64.28 ± 194.69 µg/m3; geometric mean: 5.13 µg/m3), with exceedances of the national annual standard (5 µg/m3) in several months. Notably, nighttime and early morning sessions showed elevated levels, suggesting contributions from nocturnal operations and meteorological conditions such as atmospheric inversion. A total of 179 exceedances (≥30 µg/m3) were identified, predominantly in zones with benzene-handling activities. Correlation analysis revealed a significant relationship between high concentrations and specific emission sources. These results demonstrate the utility of Me-DOAS in capturing spatiotemporal emission dynamics and support its application in exposure risk assessment and industrial emission control. Spatiotemporal Analysis of BTEX and PM Using Me-DOAS and GIS in Busan’s Industrial Complexes

Rapid industrialization and urbanization have progressed in Korea, yet public attention to hazardous pollutants emitted from industrial complexes remains limited. With the increasing coexistence of industrial and residential areas, there is a growing need for real-time monitoring and management plans that account for the rapid dispersion of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). In this study, we conducted spatiotemporal data collection and analysis for the first time in Korea using real-time measurements obtained through mobile extractive differential optical absorption spectroscopy (Me-DOAS) mounted on a solar occultation flux (SOF) vehicle. The measurements were conducted in the Saha Sinpyeong–Janglim Industrial Complex in Busan, which comprises the Sasang Industrial Complex and the Sinpyeong–Janglim Industrial Complex. BTEX compounds were selected as target volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and real-time measurements of both BTEX and fine particulate matter (PM) were conducted simultaneously. Correlation analysis revealed a strong relationship between PM10 and PM2.5 (r = 0.848–0.894), indicating shared sources. In Sasang, BTEX levels were associated with traffic and localized facilities, while in Saha Sinpyeong–Janglim, the concentrations were more influenced by industrial zoning and wind patterns. Notably, inter-compound correlations such as benzene–m-xylene and p-xylene–toluene suggested possible co-emission sources. This study proposes a GIS-based, three-dimensional air quality management approach that integrates variables such as traffic volume, wind direction, and speed through real-time measurements. The findings are expected to inform effective pollution control strategies and future environmental management plans for industrial complexes. Full article

Society’s adaptation to shared mobility services is a growing topic that requires detailed understanding of the local circumstances of potential and current users. This paper focuses on analyzing barriers to the adoption of urban bike-sharing systems in post-industrial cities, using a case study of the Silesian agglomeration in Poland. Methodologically, the article integrates quantitative survey methods with multivariate statistical analysis to analyze the demographic, socioeconomic, and motivational factors that underline the adoption of shared micromobility. The study highlights a detailed segmentation of users by income, age, professional status, and gender, as well as the observation of profound disparities in access and perceived usefulness. Of note is the study’s identification of a highly concentrated segment of young, low-income users (mostly students), which largely accounts for the general perception of economic and infrastructural barriers. These include the use of factor analysis and regression to plot the interaction patterns between individual user characteristics and certain system-level constraints, such as cost, infrastructure coverage, weather, and health. The study’s findings prioritize problem-specific interventions in urban mobility planning: bridging equity gaps between user groups. This research contributes to the current literature by providing detailed insights into the heterogeneity of user mobility behavior, offering evidence-based recommendations for inclusive and adaptive options for shared transportation infrastructure in a changing urban context. Radio frequency (RF)-based wireless systems are broadly used in communication systems such as mobile networks, satellite links, and monitoring applications. These systems offer outstanding advantages over wired systems, particularly in terms of ease of installation. However, researchers are looking for safer alternatives as a result of worries about possible health problems connected to high-frequency radiofrequency transmission. Using the visible light spectrum is one promising approach; three cutting-edge technologies are emerging in this regard: Optical Camera Communication (OCC), Light Fidelity (Li-Fi), and Visible Light Communication (VLC). In this paper, we propose a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) modulation technology for Internet of Things (IoT) applications, utilizing an LED array and time-domain on-off keying (OOK). The proposed system is compatible with both rolling shutter and global shutter cameras, including commercially available models such as CCTV, webcams, and smart cameras, commonly deployed in buildings and industrial environments. Despite the compact size of the LED array, we demonstrate that, by optimizing parameters such as exposure time, camera focal length, and channel coding, our system can achieve up to 20 communication links over a 20 m distance with low bit error rate. This paper proposes a low-latency and scalable architecture for Edge-Enabled Digital Twin networked control systems (E-DTNCS) aimed at multi-robot collision avoidance and remote control in dynamic and latency-sensitive environments. Traditional approaches, which rely on centralized cloud processing or direct sensor-to-controller communication, are inherently limited by excessive network latency, bandwidth bottlenecks, and a lack of predictive decision-making, thus constraining their effectiveness in real-time multi-agent systems. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel framework that seamlessly integrates edge computing with digital twin (DT) technology. By performing localized preprocessing at the edge, the system extracts semantically rich features from raw sensor data streams, reducing the transmission overhead of the original data. This shift from raw data to feature-based communication significantly alleviates network congestion and enhances system responsiveness. The DT layer leverages these extracted features to maintain high-fidelity synchronization with physical robots and to execute predictive models for proactive collision avoidance. To empirically validate the framework, a real-world testbed was developed, and extensive experiments were conducted with multiple mobile robots. The results revealed a substantial reduction in collision rates when DT was deployed, and further improvements were observed with E-DTNCS integration due to significantly reduced latency. These findings confirm the system’s enhanced responsiveness and its effectiveness in handling real-time control tasks. The proposed framework demonstrates the potential of combining edge intelligence with DT-driven control in advancing the reliability, scalability, and real-time performance of multi-robot systems for industrial automation and mission-critical cyber-physical applications.
