Over three decades of research has been undertaken on point cloud registration algorithms, resulting in mature theoretical frameworks and methodologies. However, among the numerous registration techniques used, the impact of point cloud scanning quality on registration outcomes has rarely been addressed. In most engineering and industrial measurement applications, the accuracy and density of LiDAR point clouds are highly dependent on laser scanners, leading to significant variability that critically affects registration quality. Key factors influencing point cloud accuracy include scanning distance, incidence angle, and the surface characteristics of the target. Notably, in short-range scanning scenarios, incidence angle emerges as the dominant error source. Building on this insight, this study systematically investigates the relationship between scanning incidence angles and point cloud quality. We propose an incident-angle-dependent weighting function for point cloud observations, and further develop an improved weighted Iterative Closest Point (ICP) registration algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves approximately 30% higher registration accuracy compared to traditional ICP algorithms and a 10% improvement over Faro SCENE’s proprietary solution. This study examined the integraftion of airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)-based handheld LiDAR, and iPhone LiDAR to inspect forest road networks following forest operations. The goal is to overcome the challenges posed by dense canopy cover and ensure accurate and efficient data collection and mapping. Airborne data were collected using the DJI Matrice 300 RTK UAV equipped with a Zenmuse L2 LiDAR sensor, which achieved a high point density of 285 points/m2 at an altitude of 80 m. Ground-level data were collected using the BLK2GO handheld laser scanner (HPLS) with SLAM methods (LiDAR SLAM, Visual SLAM, Inertial Measurement Unit) and the iPhone 13 Pro Max LiDAR. Data processing included generating DEMs, DSMs, and True Digital Orthophotos (TDOMs) via DJI Terra, LiDAR360 V8, and Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS, with additional processing and merging using CloudCompare V2 and ArcGIS Pro 3.4.0. The pairwise comparison analysis between ALS data and each alternative method revealed notable differences in elevation, highlighting discrepancies between methods. ALS + iPhone demonstrated the smallest deviation from ALS (MAE = 0.011, RMSE = 0.011, RE = 0.003%) and HPLS the larger deviation from ALS (MAE = 0.507, RMSE = 0.542, RE = 0.123%). The findings highlight the potential of fusing point clouds from diverse platforms to enhance forest road mapping accuracy. However, the selection of technology should consider trade-offs among accuracy, cost, and operational constraints. Mobile LiDAR solutions, particularly the iPhone, offer promising low-cost alternatives for certain applications. Future research should explore real-time fusion workflows and strategies to improve the cost-effectiveness and scalability of multisensor approaches for forest road monitoring. Full article

Technological development has strongly impacted all processes related to the design, construction, and management of real estate assets. In fact, the introduction of the BIM approach has required the application of three-dimensional survey technologies, and in particular the use of LiDAR instruments, both in their static (TLS—terrestrial laser scanner) and dynamic (iMMS—indoor mobile mapping system) implementations. Operators and developers of LiDAR technologies, for the implementation of scan-to-BIM procedures, initially placed particular care on the 3D surveying accuracy obtainable from such tools. The incorporation of RGB sensors into these instruments has progressively expanded LiDAR-based applications from essential topographic surveying to geospatial applications, where the emphasis is no longer on the accurate three-dimensional reconstruction of buildings but on the capability to create three-dimensional image-based visualizations, such as virtual tours, which allow the recognition of assets located in every area of the buildings. Although much has been written about obtaining the best possible accuracy for extensive asset surveying of large-scale building complexes using iMMS systems, it is now essential to develop and define suitable procedures for controlling such kinds of surveying, targeted at specific geospatial applications. We especially address the design, field acquisition, quality control, and mass data management techniques that might be used in such complex environments. This work aims to contribute by defining the technical specifications for the implementation of geospatial mapping of vast asset survey activities involving significant building sites utilizing iMMS instrumentation. Three-dimensional models can also facilitate virtual tours, enable local measurements inside rooms, and particularly support the subsequent integration of self-locating image-based technologies that can efficiently perform field updates of surveyed databases. In recent decades, climate change has led to more frequent episodes of extreme rainfall, increasing the risk of river flooding. Streams and rivers characterized by short flow times are subject to rapid and impressive floods; for this reason, the modeling of their beds is of fundamental importance for the execution of hydraulic calculations capable of predicting the flow rates and identifying the points where floods may occur. In the context of studies conducted on three watercourses in Calabria (Italy), different survey and restitution techniques were used (aerial LiDAR, terrestrial laser scanner, GNSS, photogrammetry). By integrating these methodologies, multi-resolution models were generated, featuring a horizontal accuracy of ±16 cm and a vertical accuracy of ±15 cm. These models form the basis for the hydraulic calculations performed. The results demonstrate the feasibility of producing accurate models that are compatible with the memory and processing capabilities of modern computers. Furthermore, the technique set up and implemented for the refined representation of both the models and the effects predicted by hydraulic calculations in the event of exceptional rainfall (such as flow, speed, flooded areas, and critical points along riverbanks) serves as a valuable tool for improving hydrogeological planning, designing appropriate defense works, and preparing evacuation plans in case of emergency, all with the goal of mitigating hydrogeological risk. Thanks to light detection and ranging (LiDAR), unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) are able to detect different objects in their environment and measure the distance between them. This device gives the ability to see its surroundings in real time. However, the accuracy of LiDAR can be reduced, especially in rainy weather, fog, urban smog and the like. These factors can have disastrous consequences as they increase the errors in the vehicle’s control computer. The aim of this research was to determine the most appropriate LiDAR frequency for static objects, depending on the distance to them and the scanning frequency in different weather conditions; therefore, it is based on empiric data obtained by using the RoboPeak A1M8 LiDAR. The results obtained in rainy conditions are compared with the same ones in clear weather, using stochastic methods. A direct influence of both the frequencies used and the rain on the accuracy of the LiDAR measurements was found. The range measurement errors increase in rainy weather; as the scanning frequency increases, the results become more accurate but capture a smaller number of object points. The higher frequencies lead to about five times less error at the farthest distances compared to the lower frequencies. Full article

The rapid measurement of three-dimensional bridge geometric shapes is crucial for assessing construction quality and in-service structural conditions. Existing geometric shape measurement methods predominantly rely on traditional surveying instruments, which suffer from low efficiency and are limited to sparse point sampling. This study proposes a novel framework that utilizes an airborne LiDAR–camera fusion system for data acquisition, reconstructs high-precision 3D bridge models through real-time mapping, and automatically extracts structural geometric shapes using deep learning. The main contributions include the following: (1) A synchronized LiDAR–camera fusion system integrated with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and a microprocessor was developed, enabling the flexible and large-scale acquisition of bridge images and point clouds; (2) A multi-sensor fusion mapping method coupling visual-inertial odometry (VIO) and Li-DAR-inertial odometry (LIO) was implemented to construct 3D bridge point clouds in real time robustly; and (3) An instance segmentation network-based approach was proposed to detect key structural components in images, with detected geometric shapes projected from image coordinates to 3D space using LiDAR–camera calibration parameters, addressing challenges in automated large-scale point cloud analysis. The proposed method was validated through geometric shape measurements on a concrete arch bridge. The results demonstrate that compared to the oblique photogrammetry method, the proposed approach reduces errors by 77.13%, while its detection time accounts for 4.18% of that required by a stationary laser scanner and 0.29% of that needed for oblique photogrammetry. We applied UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) and ALS (Airborne Laser Scanning) remote sensing methods to identify terrain obstacles encountered during timber extraction in the skidding process with the aim of proposing accessibility solutions to the inner parts of forest stands using skidding trails. At the Vítovický žleb site, located east of Brno in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic, we analysed the accuracy of digital terrain models (DTMs) created from UAV LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), RGB (Red–Green–Blue) UAV, ALS data taken on site and publicly available LiDAR data DMR 5G (Digital Model of Relief of the Czech Republic, 5th Generation, based on airborne laser scanning, providing pre-classified ground points with an average density of 1 point/m2). UAV data were obtained using two types of drones: a DJI Mavic 2 mounted with an RGB photogrammetric camera and a GeoSLAM Horizon laser scanner on a DJI M600 Pro hexacopter. We achieved the best accuracy with UAV technologies, with an average deviation of 0.06 m, compared to 0.20 m and 0.71 m for ALS and DMR 5G, respectively. The RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) values further confirm the differences in accuracy, with UAV-based models reaching as low as 0.71 m compared to over 1.0 m for ALS and DMR 5G. The results demonstrated that UAVs are well-suited for detailed analysis of rugged terrain morphology and obstacle identification during timber extraction, potentially replacing physical terrain surveys for timber extraction planning. Meanwhile, ALS and DMR 5G data showed significant potential for use in planning the placement of skidding trails and determining the direction and length of timber extraction from logging sites to forest roads, primarily due to their ability to cover large areas effectively. Differences in the analysis results obtained using GIS (Geographic Information System) cost surface solutions applied to ALS and DMR 5G data DTMs were evident on logging sites with terrain obstacles, where the site-specific ALS data proved to be more precise. While DMR 5G is based on ALS data, its generalised nature results in lower accuracy, making site-specific ALS data preferable for analysing rugged terrain and planning timber extractions. However, DMR 5G remains suitable for use in more uniform terrain without obstacles. Thus, we recommend combining UAV and ALS technologies for terrain with obstacles, as we found this approach optimal for efficiently planning the logging-transport process. Full article

Determining the presence and abundance of uranium mineralization at legacy mine sites is important both for responsible environmental management and potential resource recovery. Technologies that can make such determinations quickly and at low costs are highly desirable. The current work focuses on demonstrating the use of simple handheld commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) devices for rapidly determining the presence and distribution of uranyl minerals within an abandoned copper–uranium mine. Specifically, this work demonstrates the use of a COTS iPhone 13 Pro smartphone with an inbuilt solid-state LiDAR (laser) scanner in combination with a handheld LED-based UV torch to conduct a rapid fluorescence imaging photogrammetry survey aimed at rapidly determining the distribution of uranyl minerals within an abandoned copper–uranium mine in the Sierra Ancha Wilderness Area, Gila County, Arizona, USA. Such a simple methodology, presented herein, can be used to quickly determine the distribution of uranyl minerals on exposed surfaces within the underground workings and provide an indication of the presence of primary uranium ore minerals buried within the surrounding rock. Quantifying forest structure to assess changing wildfire risk factors is critical as vulnerable areas require mitigation, management, and resource allocation strategies. Remote sensing offers the opportunity to accurately measure forest attributes without time-intensive field inventory campaigns. Here, we quantified forest canopy cover and individual tree metrics across 44 plots (20 m × 20 m) in oak woodlands and mixed-conifer forests in Northern California using structure-from-motion (SfM) 3D point clouds derived from unoccupied aerial systems (UAS) multispectral imagery. In addition, we compared UAS–SfM estimates with those derived using similar methods applied to Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) 3D point clouds as well as traditional ground-based measurements. Canopy cover estimates were similar across remote sensing (ALS, UAS-SfM) and ground-based approaches (r2 = 0.79, RMSE = 16.49%). Compared to ground-based approaches, UAS-SfM point clouds allowed for correct detection of 68% of trees and estimated tree heights were significantly correlated (r2 = 0.69, RMSE = 5.1 m). UAS-SfM was not able to estimate canopy base height due to its inability to penetrate dense canopies in these forests. Since canopy cover and individual tree heights were accurately estimated at the plot-scale in this unique bioregion with diverse topography and complex species composition, we recommend UAS-SfM as a viable approach and affordable solution to estimate these critical forest parameters for predictive wildfire modeling. In low-illumination environments, traditional traffic accident survey methods struggle to obtain high-quality data. This paper proposes a traffic accident reconstruction method utilizing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and auxiliary equipment. Firstly, a methodological framework for investigating traffic accidents under low-illumination conditions is developed. Accidents are classified based on the presence of obstructions, and corresponding investigation strategies are formulated. As for the unobstructed scene, a UAV-mounted LiDAR scans the accident site to generate a comprehensive point cloud model. In the partially obstructed scene, a ground-based mobile laser scanner complements the areas that are obscured or inaccessible to the UAV-mounted LiDAR. Subsequently, the collected point cloud data are processed with a multiscale voxel iteration method for down-sampling to determine optimal parameters. Then, the improved normal distributions transform (NDT) algorithm and different filtering algorithms are adopted to register the ground and air point clouds, and the optimal combination of algorithms is selected, thus, to reconstruct a high-precision 3D point cloud model of the accident scene. Finally, two nighttime traffic accident scenarios are conducted. DJI Zenmuse L1 UAV LiDAR system and EinScan Pro 2X mobile scanner are selected for survey reconstruction. In both experiments, the proposed method achieved RMSE values of 0.0427 m and 0.0451 m, outperforming traditional aerial photogrammetry-based modeling with RMSE values of 0.0466 m and 0.0581 m. The results demonstrate that this method can efficiently and accurately investigate low-illumination traffic accident scenes without being affected by obstructions, providing valuable technical support for refined traffic management and accident analysis. LiDAR is an active remote sensing technology widely used in forestry applications, such as forest resource surveys, tree information collection, and ecosystem monitoring. However, due to the resolution limitations of 3D-laser scanners and the canopy occlusion in forest environments, the tree point clouds obtained often have missing data. This can reduce the accuracy of individual tree segmentation, which subsequently affects the tree species classification. To address the issue, this study used point cloud data with RGB information collected by the UAV platform to improve tree species classification by completing the missing point clouds. Furthermore, the study also explored the effects of point cloud completion, feature selection, and classification methods on the results. Specifically, both a traditional geometric method and a deep learning-based method were used for point cloud completion, and their performance was compared. For the classification of tree species, five machine learning algorithms—Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN), Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA), and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN)—were utilized. This study also ranked the importance of features to assess the impact of different algorithms and features on classification accuracy. The results showed that the deep learning-based completion method provided the best performance (avgCD = 6.14; avgF1 = 0.85), generating more complete point clouds than the traditional method. On the other hand, compared with SVM and BPNN, RF showed better performance in dealing with multi-classification tasks with limited training samples (OA-87.41%, Kappa-0.85). Among the six dominant tree species, Pinus koraiensis had the highest classification accuracy (93.75%), while that of Juglans mandshurica was the lowest (82.05%). In addition, the vegetation index and the tree structure parameter accounted for 50% and 30%, respectively, in the top 10 features in terms of feature importance. The point cloud intensity also had a high contribution to the classification results, indicating that the lidar point cloud data can also be used as an important basis for tree species classification. Beach surface moisture (BSM) is crucial to studying coastal aeolian sand transport processes. However, traditional measurement techniques fail to accurately monitor moisture distribution with high spatiotemporal resolution. Remote sensing technologies have garnered widespread attention for providing rapid and non-contact moisture measurements, but a single method has inherent limitations. Passive remote sensing is challenged by complex beach illumination and sediment grain size variability. Active remote sensing represented by LiDAR (light detection and ranging) exhibits high sensitivity to moisture, but requires cumbersome intensity correction and may leave data holes in high-moisture areas. Using machine learning, this research proposes a BSM inversion method that fuses UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) orthophoto brightness with intensity recorded by TLSs (terrestrial laser scanners). First, a back propagation (BP) network rapidly corrects original intensity with in situ scanning data. Second, beach sand grain size is estimated based on the characteristics of the grain size distribution. Then, by applying nearest point matching, intensity and brightness data are fused at the point cloud level. Finally, a new BP network coupled with the fusion data and grain size information enables automatic brightness correction and BSM inversion. A field experiment at Baicheng Beach in Xiamen, China, confirms that this multi-source data fusion strategy effectively integrates key features from diverse sources, enhancing the BP network predictive performance. This method demonstrates robust predictive accuracy in complex beach environments, with an RMSE of 2.63% across 40 samples, efficiently producing high-resolution BSM maps that offer values in studying aeolian sand transport mechanisms. The Prambanan Temple cluster is a world heritage site that has significant value for humanity, a multiple zone cluster arrangement of highly ornamented towering temples, and a Hindu architectural pattern design. It lies near the Opak Fault, at the foothills of Mount Merapi, on an unstable ground layer, and is surrounded by human activities in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The site’s vulnerability implies the necessity of 3D digital documentation for its conservation, but its complexity poses difficulties. This work aimed to address this challenge by introducing the utilization of architectural pattern design (APD) to guide multi-sensor line-ups for documentation. First, APDs were established from the literature to derive the associated multiple detail levels; then, multiple sensors and modes of light detection and ranging (Lidar) scanners and photogrammetry were utilized according to their detail requirements and, finally, point cloud data were processed, integrated, assessed, and validated by the proof of the existence of an APD. The internal and external qualities of each sensor result showed the millimeter- to centimeter-range root mean squared error, with the terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) having the best accuracy, followed by aerial close-range and terrestrial-mode photogrammetry and nadiral Lidar and photogrammetry. Two relative cloud distance analyses of every point cloud model to the reference model (TLS) returned the millimeter and centimeter ranges of the mean distance values. Furthermore, visually, every point cloud model from each sensor successfully complemented each other. Therefore, we can conclude that our approach is promising for complex heritage documentation. These results provide a solid foundation for future analyses, particularly in assessing structural vulnerabilities and informing conservation strategies. Full article

The presence of sufficient natural regeneration in mature forests is regarded as a pivotal criterion for their future stability, ensuring seamless reforestation following final harvesting operations or forest calamities. Consequently, forest regeneration is typically quantified as part of forest inventories to monitor its occurrence and development over time. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology, particularly ground-based LiDAR, has emerged as a powerful tool for assessing typical forest inventory parameters, providing high-resolution, three-dimensional data on the forest structure. Therefore, it is logical to attempt a LiDAR-based quantification of forest regeneration, which could greatly enhance area-wide monitoring, further supporting sustainable forest management through data-driven decision making. However, examples in the literature are relatively sparse, with most relevant studies focusing on an indirect quantification of understory density from airborne LiDAR data (ALS). The objective of this study is to develop an accurate and reliable method for estimating regeneration coverage from data obtained through personal laser scanning (PLS). To this end, 19 forest inventory plots were scanned with both a personal and a high-resolution terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) for reference purposes. The voxelated point clouds obtained from the personal laser scanner were converted into raster images, providing either the canopy height, the total number of filled voxels (containing at least one LiDAR point), or the ratio of filled voxels to the total number of voxels. Local maxima in these raster images, assumed to be likely to contain tree saplings, were then used as seed points for a raster-based tree segmentation, which was employed to derive the final regeneration coverage estimate. The results showed that the estimates differed from the reference in a range of approximately −10 to +10 percentage points, with an average deviation of around 0 percentage points. In contrast, visually estimated regeneration coverages on the same forest plots deviated from the reference by between −20 and +30 percentage points, approximately −2 percentage points on average. These findings highlight the potential of PLS data for automated forest regeneration quantification, which could be further expanded to include a broader range of data collected during LiDAR-based forest inventory campaigns. Nowadays, driving simulation devices represent a continuously evolving and developing area in the world of virtual reality. One of the fundamental elements in the design of driving software is the track model. This work aims to study the use of advanced technologies for the three-dimensional modeling of a racing track in a driving simulator. Specifically, it employs the LiDAR methodology to acquire the three-dimensional coordinates of a 1 km long circuit located on the Fisciano campus of the University of Salerno. The purpose of this work is to explain and present a novel track acquisition and modeling methodology within the realm of simulated driving reality. Following the study, the Virtual Reality Laboratory’s driving simulator at the Department of Industrial Engineering conducted tests to validate the proposed circuit model. The test rides analyzed the realism of the driving experience, thereby validating the proposed track model. This phase was complemented by a series of proposals for possible future developments in the field of three-dimensional modeling applied to driving simulation and beyond. In the end, the 3D model obtained demonstrated the high definition of the acquired result and the speed with which multiple data were obtained simultaneously, thanks to the laser scanner used.
