Over the last forty years British Methodism has moved increasingly toward becoming an inclusive Church. Indeed, today, the concept of inclusion may accurately be described as a hallmark of British Methodism. However, while the Methodist Conference has formally identified principles governing its practice in this area there has been limited discussion as to how far these developments cohere with the church’s doctrinal standards which are officially related to John Wesley’s writings. This paper explores the continuity and discontinuity between Wesley’s theology and the commitment to inclusion characteristic of his spiritual descendants. In particular, it probes Wesley’s actual practice in relation to the admission and expulsion of members and evaluates whether or not his conception of holiness really serves as a warrant for the conception of inclusion, practically operative in contemporary British Methodism. In exploring these questions the paper explores whether or not John Wesley really was as Inclusive as contemporary British Methodists imagine. Full article

Theodore R. Weber, founding member and past president of the Society of Christian Ethics, developed a distinctive political theology based on John Wesley’s soteriology. Weber argued that a fully developed concept of the political image of God, which humans reflect in their social and institutional contexts, would move beyond the individualistic focus of Wesley’s ordo salutis, allowing Wesleyans a shared language to talk about political institutions and social ethics distinct from the order of preservation and order of creation approaches. Weber’s understanding of political sanctification, in which individuals and institutions contribute to God’s redemptive work of reconciliation, is a unique contribution to political theology. Weber argued that politics is part of discipleship but cautioned against attempts to Christianize society. His Wesleyan political theology provides parameters for faithful political action in refuting and working against a Christian Nationalist agenda in the United States of America. This article offers an appraisal of Weber’s Wesleyan political theology through an extensive review of his writings on the topic. The method engages in close textual readings of Weber’s publications, providing a clear synthesis of the major themes in his scholarly writings spanning over four decades. The purpose is to provide a cogent overview of Weber’s perspective and approach so that his legacy of writings may continue to inform new scholarly audiences. Full article

Background/Objectives: This study explored the associations of normal breast tissue characteristics on multiparametric MRI with clinical assessments of breast cancer risk in women with dense breasts. Methods: Women with dense breasts who underwent multiparametric MRI were included. Breast cancer risk was determined based on Tyrer–Cuzick (TC) lifetime risk scores, categorized as high (TC ≥ 20%) or low risk. Qualitative background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) assessment was obtained from imaging reports. Quantitative imaging markers were calculated, including median BPE, median apparent diffusion coefficient, and volume measures of the whole breast, fibroglandular tissue (FGT), blood vessels, and BPE regions. The associations between imaging markers and TC risk groups were evaluated using age-adjusted logistic regression and summarized by area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: Seventy-seven women were evaluated; a total of 20 (26%) were low risk, and 57 (74%) were high risk. After adjusting for age and multiple testing, BPE:breast ratio (adj. p = 0.037), FGT:breast ratio (adj. p = 0.046), and BPE:vessel ratio (adj. p = 0.037) were positively associated with risk, while qualitative BPE was not (adj. p = 0.11). Overall, risk categorizations based on imaging markers were concordant with TC score in up to 70% of women. Conclusions: In women with dense breasts, quantitative measures from multiparametric MRI (BPE:breast, FGT:breast, and BPE:vessel ratios) moderately discriminated high- and low-risk groups, warranting further investigation of their value to supplement conventional breast cancer risk assessment tools. One of the core sources for Christian justification or critique of social justice matters is the Bible. One would think that a leading historic Christian figure, like John Wesley, whose theology was closely bound to biblical interpretation, would have used the Bible extensively to argue against an important matter such as (anti-)slavery. However, we find that his argument lacks his usual biblical-centeredness. This article explores this phenomenon and attempts to understand Wesley’s reasoning and argument in light of his limited use of scripture in this instance. Full article

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology can be used to assess canopy height in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), but standardized data acquisition and processing guidelines are lacking. Accurate canopy height estimation is crucial in cotton for optimizing growth regulator application and maximizing yield. The main goal of this study was to determine the optimal unmanned aerial vehicle flight settings—altitude and speed—and assess specific processing parameters’ impact on data accuracy, processing time, and file size. Nine flight settings comprising three altitudes (12.2 m, 24.4 m, and 48.8 m) and three speeds (4.8 km/h, 9.6 km/h, and 14.4 km/h) were tested. LiDAR data were processed using DJI Terra software (v. 4.1.0), where two user-defined processing steps were examined: point-cloud thinning via grid size sub-sampling (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 cm) and slope classification (flat, gentle, and steep). The optimal flight altitude was 24.4 m, with no effect of flight speed. Grid sub-sampling up to 20 cm produced balanced accuracy, processing time, and file size. The choice of slope category had no significant effect on LiDAR-derived canopy height. These findings contribute to the development of standardized LiDAR data acquisition and processing guidelines for cotton to support crop management decision. Full article

Construction sites rely on erosion control practices to protect bare slopes and prevent soil loss. The effectiveness of certain erosion controls is often under-evaluated if they are not a part of a product evaluation program. Furthermore, erosion controls in general are not fully understood regarding how their performance can be affected by site specific variables, such as soil variations. This study used large-scale rainfall simulators to evaluate how a commonly used erosion control on construction sites, broadcasted straw mulch, performs on three common soil types in Alabama. The study at the Auburn University, Stormwater Research Facility (AU-SRF) used the industry standard testing method and three different soil types: sand, loam, and clay in accordance with ASTM D6459-19, the standard test method for testing rolled erosion control products’ (RECPs) performance in protecting hillslopes from rainfall-induced erosion. As required by ASTM D6459-19, the rainfall simulators simulated a storm of varying 20 min increments of 2 in./h (5.08 cm/h), 4 in./h (10.16 cm/h), and 6 in./h (15.24 cm/h). A total of nine bare soil tests on the 4:1 test plots was performed with an average total soil loss of 1977 lb (897 kg), 236.2 lb (107 kg), and 114.2 lb (51.8 kg) for sand, loam, and clay, respectively. The average erodibility K-factor for each soil type is calculated to be 0.37 (sand), 0.043 (loam), and 0.013 (clay). Nine straw tests were performed on the 4:1 plots, with an average total soil loss of 44.31 lb (20.1 kg), 6.74 lb (3.1 kg), and 17.13 lb (7.8 kg) for sand, loam, and clay, respectively. Straw testing indicated substantial soil loss reduction with average cover management C-factor values under the revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) method of 0.021, 0.047, and 0.193 for sand, loam, and clay applications, respectively. This variation in C-factor across the three soil types indicates that the single C-factor, often reported by product manufacturers, is not adequate to imply performance. Full article

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has evolved into numerous lineages with unique spike mutations and caused multiple epidemics domestically and globally. Although COVID-19 vaccines are available, new variants with the capacity for immune evasion continue to emerge. To understand and characterize the evolution of circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initiated the National SARS-CoV-2 Strain Surveillance (NS3) program and has received thousands of SARS-CoV-2 clinical specimens from across the nation as part of a genotype to phenotype characterization process. Focus reduction neutralization with various antisera was used to antigenically characterize 143 SARS-CoV-2 Delta, Mu and Omicron subvariants from selected clinical specimens received between May 2021 and February 2023, representing a total of 59 unique spike protein sequences. BA.4/5 subvariants BU.1, BQ.1.1, CR.1.1, CQ.2 and BA.4/5 + D420N + K444T; BA.2.75 subvariants BM.4.1.1, BA.2.75.2, CV.1; and recombinant Omicron variants XBF, XBB.1, XBB.1.5 showed the greatest escape from neutralizing antibodies when analyzed against post third-dose original monovalent vaccinee sera. Post fourth-dose bivalent vaccinee sera provided better protection against those subvariants, but substantial reductions in neutralization titers were still observed, especially among BA.4/5 subvariants with both an N-terminal domain (NTD) deletion and receptor binding domain (RBD) substitutions K444M + N460K and recombinant Omicron variants. This analysis demonstrated a framework for long-term systematic genotype to antigenic characterization of circulating and emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants in the U.S., which is critical to assessing their potential impact on the effectiveness of current vaccines and antigen recommendations for future updates. Clinicopathological presentations are critical for establishing a postoperative treatment regimen in Colorectal Cancer (CRC), although the prognostic value is low in Stage 2 CRC. We implemented a novel exploratory algorithm based on artificial intelligence (explainable artificial intelligence, XAI) that integrates mutational and clinical features to identify genomic signatures by repurposing the FoundationOne Companion Diagnostic (F1CDx) assay. The training data set (n = 378) consisted of subjects with recurrent and non-recurrent Stage 2 or 3 CRC retrieved from TCGA. Genomic signatures were built for identifying subgroups in Stage 2 and 3 CRC patients according to recurrence using genomic parameters and further associations with the clinical presentation. The summarization of the top-performing genomic signatures resulted in a 32-gene genomic signature that could predict tumor recurrence in CRC Stage 2 patients with high precision. The genomic signature was further validated using an independent dataset (n = 149), resulting in high-precision prognosis (AUC: 0.952; PPV = 0.974; NPV = 0.923). We anticipate that our genomic signatures and NCCN guidelines will improve recurrence predictions in CRC molecular stratification. Full article

Examination of how terms such as culinary nutrition, culinary nutrition science, culinary medicine, culinary nutrition professional, culinary nutrition intervention, culinary nutrition activity, and culinary nutrition competency are used in practice, and the creation of consensus definitions will promote the consistent use of these terms across work areas and disciplines. Thirty leading practitioners, academics, and researchers in the fields of food and nutrition across Australia, the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia were approached by investigators via email to submit definitions of key terms using a Qualtrics survey link. Further participants were reached through snowball recruitment. Initial emails were sent in October and November 2021 with subsequent reminders between November 2021 and March 2022. Two researchers undertook content analysis of the text answers for each of the terms and generated definitions for discussion and consensus. Thirty-seven participants commenced the survey and twenty-three submitted one or more definitions. Agreed definitions fell into two categories: practice concepts and practitioners. Further discussion amongst investigators led to the creation of a visual map to demonstrate the interrelationship of terms. Culinary nutrition science underpins, and interprofessional collaboration characterizes practice in this area, however, further work is needed to define competencies and model best practice. Background and purpose: A bolus is required when treating scalp lesions with photon radiation therapy. Traditional bolus materials face several issues, including air gaps and setup difficulty due to irregular, convex scalp geometry. A 3D-milled bolus is custom-formed to match individual patient anatomy, allowing improved dose coverage and homogeneity. Here, we describe the creation process of a 3D-milled bolus and report the outcomes for patients with scalp malignancies treated with Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) utilizing a 3D-milled bolus. Materials and methods: Twenty-two patients treated from 2016 to 2022 using a 3D-milled bolus and VMAT were included. Histologies included squamous cell carcinoma (n = 14, 64%) and angiosarcoma (n = 8, 36%). A total of 7 (32%) patients were treated in the intact and 15 (68%) in the postoperative setting. The median prescription dose was 66.0 Gy (range: 60.0–69.96). Results: The target included the entire scalp for 8 (36%) patients; in the remaining 14 (64%), the median ratio of planning target volume to scalp volume was 35% (range: 25–90%). The median dose homogeneity index was 1.07 (range: 1.03–1.15). Six (27%) patients experienced acute grade 3 dermatitis and one (5%) patient experienced late grade 3 skin ulceration. With a median follow-up of 21.4 months (range: 4.0–75.4), the 18-month rates of locoregional control and overall survival were 75% and 79%, respectively. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first study to report the clinical outcomes for patients with scalp malignancies treated with the combination of VMAT and a 3D-milled bolus. This technique resulted in favorable clinical outcomes and an acceptable toxicity profile in comparison with historic controls and warrants further investigation in a larger prospective study. Culinary medicine (CM) addresses diseases through nutrition and culinary education. To promote access to educational material for people with diabetes and engagement in virtual classes, we created a virtual culinary medicine toolkit (VCMT) sensitive to literacy levels and language preferences. The VCMT was developed to accompany existing virtual CM programs and help improve participant interaction and retention, offering educational materials for providers and participants. The provider VCMT offers level-setting education to reduce mixed nutrition messaging, including educational resources discussing inclusive nutrition and mindful eating topics. Each handout has a QR code and link to engaging, animated videos that provide further explanation. The participant VCMT offers a range of fundamental cooking skill videos and infographics, including knife skills and preparing whole grains and healthy beverages. Participant handouts and animated videos, which are played during the virtual CM class, allow participants to learn more about diabetes management and food literacy topics, including interpreting nutrition labels, and are employed during a CM to facilitate discussion and reflection. The animated videos replace a traditional slide-based lecture, allowing space for patient-centered facilitated discussions during virtual cooking sessions. The VCMT could guide the development of virtual CM interventions to shift learning from lecture-based to patient-centered discussions via a visual and inclusive medium. Full article

Reprogramming of fatty acid metabolism promotes cell growth and metastasis through a variety of processes that stimulate signaling molecules, energy storage, and membrane biosynthesis in endometrial cancer. Oleic acid is one of the most important monounsaturated fatty acids in the human body, which appears to have both pro- and anti-tumorigenic activities in various pre-clinical models. In this study, we evaluated the potential anti-tumor effects of oleic acid in endometrial cancer cells and the LKB1fl/flp53fl/fl mouse model of endometrial cancer. Oleic acid increased lipogenesis, inhibited cell proliferation, caused cell cycle G1 arrest, induced cellular stress and apoptosis, and suppressed invasion in endometrial cancer cells. Targeting of diacylglycerol acyltransferases 1 and 2 effectively increased the cytotoxicity of oleic acid. Moreover, oleic acid significantly increased the expression of wild-type PTEN, and knockdown of PTEN by shRNA partially reversed the anti-proliferative and anti-invasive effects of oleic acid. Inhibition of the AKT/mTOR pathway by ipatasertib effectively increased the anti-tumor activity of oleic acid in endometrial cancer cells. Oleic acid treatment (10 mg/kg, daily, oral) for four weeks significantly inhibited tumor growth by 52.1% in the LKB1fl/flp53fl/fl mice. Our findings demonstrated that oleic acid exhibited anti-tumorigenic activities, dependent on the PTEN/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, in endometrial cancer. Full article

The relationship between what and how individuals eat and their overall and long-term health is non-controversial. However, for decades, food and nutrition discussions have often been highly medicalized. Given the significant impact of poor nutrition on health, broader discussions about food should be integrated into routine patient history taking. We advocate for an expansion of the current, standard approach to patient history taking in order to include questions regarding patients’ ‘foodlife’ (total relationship to food) as a screening and baseline assessment tool for referrals. We propose that healthcare providers: (1) routinely engage with patients about their relationship to food, and (2) recognize that such dialogues extend beyond nutrition and lifestyle questions. Mirroring other recent revisions to medical history taking—such as exploring biopsychosocial risks—questions about food relationships and motivators of eating may be essential for optimal patient assessment and referrals. We draw on the novel tools of ‘foodlife’ ethnography (developed by co-author ethnographer J.J.L., and further refined in collaboration with the co-authors who contributed their clinical experiences as a former primary care physician (D.M.E.), registered dietitian (J.W.M.), and diabetologist (H.Z.)) to model a set of baseline questions for inclusion in routine clinical settings. Importantly, this broader cultural approach seeks to augment and enhance current food intake discussions used by registered dietitian nutritionists, endocrinologists, internists, and medical primary care providers for better baseline assessments and referrals. By bringing the significance of food into the domain of routine medical interviewing practices by a range of health professionals, we theorize that this approach can set a strong foundation of trust between patients and healthcare professionals, underscoring food’s vital role in patient-centered care. In this report, we establish a straightforward method for estimating the equilibrium constant for the creatine kinase reaction (CK Keq″) over wide but physiologically and experimentally relevant ranges of pH, Mg2+ and temperature. Our empirical formula for CK Keq″ is based on experimental measurements. It can be used to estimate [ADP] when [ADP] is below the resolution of experimental measurements, a typical situation because [ADP] is on the order of micromolar concentrations in living cells and may be much lower in many in vitro experiments. Accurate prediction of [ADP] is essential for in vivo studies of cellular energetics and metabolism and for in vitro studies of ATP-dependent enzyme function under near-physiological conditions. With [ADP], we were able to obtain improved estimates of ΔGATP, necessitating the reinvestigation of previously reported ADP- and ΔGATP-dependent processes. Application to actomyosin force generation in muscle provides support for the hypothesis that, when [Pi] varies and pH is not altered, the maximum Ca2+-activated isometric force depends on ΔGATP in both living and permeabilized muscle preparations. Further analysis of the pH studies introduces a novel hypothesis around the role of submicromolar ADP in force generation. Full article

The skin, the largest external organ, serves as the primary defensive barrier against various environmental factors such as ultraviolet exposure, pollution, dietary habits, pathogens, and chemical compounds. Consequently, the skin reflects our age through visible signs of aging, such as wrinkles, age spots, dullness, and sagging. This review explores the gender-related aspects of cutaneous aging and the associated dermatological conditions. It highlights the different manifestations of aging in females and males that become evident after the age of 12, emphasizing the susceptibility to conditions such as seborrheic eczema, acne, and rosacea. Treatment strategies often vary between genders due to these disparities. While men tend to experience accelerated skin aging, most anti-aging products and strategies primarily target females. However, there has been a recent shift in men’s priorities, leading to increased interest in maintaining a youthful appearance and seeking cosmetic treatments. The manuscript covers a comprehensive range of modern dermal anti-aging and rejuvenation procedures, including plastic surgery, bio-revitalization methods, lasers, microneedling, and topical treatments. Additionally, it explores promising natural and synthetic therapeutics for combating age-related skin changes. The focus is on understanding the physiological aspects of gender-related cutaneous structure and aging to guide effective and tailored approaches in dermatological practice. Full article
