Background and Aim: Pneumococcal pneumonia is a major cause of death globally, emphasizing the importance of vaccination, especially in low- and middle-income countries. In Iran, the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) is available exclusively through private healthcare systems, resulting in a lack of studies on the prevalence of Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) serotypes among vaccinated children. This research aimed to explore and compare the prevalence of nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage, serotype distribution, and antibiotic resistance patterns in healthy PCV13-vaccinated and -unvaccinated children. Methods: From August 2023 to November 2024, a multi-center, cross-sectional observational study was conducted in Tehran, Iran. This study included 204 nasopharyngeal samples collected from children aged from 18 to 59 months, involving both cases of children vaccinated with PCV13 and unvaccinated populations. S. pneumoniae was identified through a combination of culture methods and biochemical tests, confirmed by real-time PCR. Serotyping was achieved using cpsB sequencing, and the minimum inhibitory concentration method was employed to assess antibiotic resistance. Results: This study revealed similar S. pneumoniae carriage rates between PCV13-vaccinated and -unvaccinated Iranian children (20.6% vs. 21.6%). Serotypes 23F and 19F were prevalent in unvaccinated children, while 15B/15C was more prevalent in PCV13-vaccinated children. The included S. pneumoniae serotypes in PCV13 were detected more in the unvaccinated group. PCV13-vaccinated children exhibited no penicillin-resistant pneumococcal isolates, although four isolates were non-susceptible in unvaccinated children. Both groups showed substantial resistance to erythromycin and SXT. Previous respiratory infections, daycare attendance, residence in Tehran, and a history of antibiotic consumption increased the risk of pneumococcal carriage. Conclusions: PCV13 vaccination influences pneumococcal serotype distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility, although there was no significant difference regarding carriage rates between vaccinated and unvaccinated groups. These findings highlight the critical importance of vaccination in reducing invasive serotypes and antimicrobial resistance in children under five years old, emphasizing the importance of national PCV vaccination programs alongside continuous serotype surveillance. Heat-stress resilience is vital for poultry in tropical/subtropical regions where high temperatures impair productivity. Ake chickens, as the only naked-neck chicken breed in China, exhibit robust resistance to heat stress, but this breed lacks clarity in its genetic origins. This study utilized the next-generation sequencing data from 22 chicken breeds to conduct phylogenetic and population analyses. Gene flow analysis revealed a gene migration event from Iranian naked-neck chickens and Indian local breeds to Ake chickens, and population separation estimates suggested that the naked-neck gene was introduced to China around 500–600 years ago. NJ-tree, PCA, and population structure analyses showed that Ake chickens cluster with Yunnan native breeds, which diverged only 100–200 years ago. A selective sweep in the candidate region on chromosome 3 (97.0–97.37 Mb) showed elevated genetic differentiation (FST) and reduced nucleotide diversity (π) compared to the genome-wide average, indicating rapid fixation of the trait under natural/artificial selection. Demographic reconstruction indicated that the current effective size of Ake chickens is stable at 2000–3000 individuals. These findings deepen our understanding of Ake chicken evolution and provide valuable insights for conservation and the development of heat-stress-resistant poultry breeds. Full article

As global migration continues to expand, the diversity of migrant populations increases. This includes a growing number of highly educated individuals from lower-income countries who face significant economic and mental health challenges in attempting to integrate into new communities. Despite extensive education and experience, their expertise is often unrecognized, with many resorting to unskilled labor alternatives. While substantial research exists on the immigration experiences of physicians and nurses, little is known about other professionals, such as dentists. This case study seeks to gain an in-depth understanding of the post-migration experiences of Iranian-trained dentists in Canada, identifying barriers and facilitators to their successful integration. Using a qualitative approach, this study is based on eleven interviews with dentists trained in Iran who recently immigrated to Canada. Semi-structured interviews were conducted via Zoom in English. A thematic analysis was performed using the 2021 Dedoose software program. Barriers to successful integration were categorized into two main themes: “socio-cultural” and “institutional” impediments. The findings show that participants faced significant challenges integrating into Canadian society. Beyond the many socio-cultural obstacles, the negative economic and mental health impacts of attempting to navigate the credential recognition system were substantial, largely due to what appears to be a systematic and institutionalized bias against foreign-trained individuals built into the credentialing system. As a result, their skills often remain underutilized, benefiting neither themselves nor their new country. Findings will inform policy and practice and propose practical recommendations that include reducing institutional barriers for credential assessment, providing mental health support, and offering financial support during assessment of international education. This paper examines the historical relationship between Shi’i jurisprudence and the Islamic Republic of Iran’s reproductive biopolitics. Using archival methods, the paper looks into the similarities and differences between religious interpretations and Iranian law. It then analyzes the implications of the recent ‘Family Protection and Youthful Population’ law, enacted in 2021 in response to fears of a looming ‘population crisis,’ and how it further restricts women’s access to abortion (care). The paper argues that reproductive policies are influenced not only by religious authorities and pronatalist patriarchal rationales but also by specific anxieties about a population crisis and decline considered a threat to the country’s national security. Reproductive policies exist within a moral framework at the intersection of demographic anxieties, biopolitics, and religious discourses that push women toward unpaid maternal labor and traditional gender roles. Predicting the Global Distribution of Nitraria L. Under Climate Change Based on Optimized MaxEnt Modeling

The genus of Nitraria L. are Tertiary-relict desert sand-fixing plants, which are an important forage and agricultural product, as well as an important source of medicinal and woody vegetable oil. In order to provide a theoretical basis for better protection and utilization of species in the Nitraria L., this study collected global distribution information within the Nitraria L., along with data on 29 environmental and climatic factors. The Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) model was used to simulate the globally suitable distribution areas for Nitraria L. The results showed that the mean AUC value was 0.897, the TSS average value was 0.913, and the model prediction results were excellent. UV-B seasonality (UVB-2), UV-B of the lowest month (UVB-4), precipitation of the warmest quarter (bio18), the DEM (Digital Elevation Model), and annual precipitation (bio12) were the key variables affecting the distribution area of Nitraria L, with contributions of 54.4%, 11.1%, 8.3%, 7.4%, and 4.1%, respectively. The Nitraria L. plants are currently found mainly in Central Asia, North Africa, the neighboring Middle East, and parts of southern Australia and Siberia. In future scenarios, except for a small expansion of the 2030s scenario model Nitraria L., the potential suitable distribution areas showed a decreasing trend. The contraction area is mainly concentrated in South Asia, such as Afghanistan and Pakistan, North Africa, Libya, as well as in areas of low suitability in northern Australia, where there was also significant shrinkage. The areas of expansion are mainly concentrated in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau to the Iranian plateau, and the Sahara Desert is also partly expanded. With rising Greenhouse gas concentrations, habitat fragmentation is becoming more severe. Center-of-mass migration results also suggest that the potential suitable area of Nitraria L. will shift northwestward in the future. This study can provide a theoretical basis for determining the scope of Nitraria L. habitat protection, population restoration, resource management and industrial development in local areas. Myrtus communis L. (Myrtaceae), widely valued for its aromatic leaves and essential oil, plays a significant role in traditional medicine and modern phytotherapy. The variability in its essential oil composition and bioactive compounds across different populations underscores its potential for novel therapeutic discoveries and agricultural utilization. This study aimed to evaluate the phytochemical diversity of 12 selected Iranian M. communis populations in their natural habitats. Leaf samples were collected in 2023 from these native habitats to assess various parameters, including phenolic compounds (total phenols and total flavonoids), antioxidant capacity, essential oil content, and essential oil composition. The results indicated significant variations in phenolic content and antioxidant capacity across the populations. The Khoraman population, used as a control, exhibited the highest levels of total phenols and flavonoids, followed by the Sar-sarab and Yazd populations, while the Poldokhtar and Kermanshah populations showed the lowest levels. Additionally, the Poldokhtar and Hormozgan populations demonstrated the highest antioxidant capacities. Essential oil content ranged from 0.480 to 1.478%, with the Khoraman and Padeghan populations having the highest percentages of 1.631 and 1.478%, respectively. GC/MS analysis identified 29 distinct compounds in the essential oils, with major components including 1,8-cineole (22.34 to 45.66%), α-pinene (19.25 to 35.96%), linalool (7.79 to 18.76%), and α-terpineol (5.26 to 9.17%). The myrtle populations were categorized into four groups: (1) Khoraman; (2) Shiraz and Yazd; (3) Ilam, Sar-sarab, Poldokhtar, and Padeghan; and (4) Khuzestan, Kerman, Kermanshah, Kohgiluyeh–Boyer–Ahmad, and Hormozgan. Domestication and selection significantly changed phenotypic traits in modern domestic animals. To identify the genomic regions associated with prolificacy in this study, 837 ewes from three Iranian indigenous sheep breeds, consisting of Baluchi, Lori-Bakhtiari, and Zandi uniparous breeds, and one Greek highly prolific dairy sheep, namely Chios, were genotyped using OvineSNP50K arrays. Statistical tests were then performed using different and complementary methods based on either site frequency (FST) and haplotype (hapFLK) between populations, followed by a pathway analysis of the genes contained in the selected regions. The results revealed that for the top 0.01 percentile of the obtained FST values, 16 genomic regions on chromosomes 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 16, 18, 19, and 20, and for hapFLK values, 3 regions located on chromosomes 3, 7, and 13, were under selection. A bioinformatic analysis of these genomic regions showed that these loci overlapped with potential candidate genes associated with prolificacy in sheep including GNAQ, COL5A2, COL3A1, HECW1, FBN1, COMMD3, RYR1, CCL28, SERPINA14, and HSPA2. These regions also overlapped with some quantitative trait loci (QTLs) linked to prolificacy traits, milk yield, and body weight. These findings suggest that future research could further link these genomic regions to prolificacy traits in sheep. Full article

Grey mould disease, caused by various Botrytis species, poses a significant threat to important plants worldwide. This study aimed to characterize Botrytis populations on strawberry and roses, economically relevant host plants, and raspberry, used as a representative of wild plants, in Iran. A total of 389 isolates were collected and analyzed based on morphological features and haplotyping using molecular markers, transposable elements (Boty and Flipper), and fungicide response. Moreover, 60 isolates were used for phylogenetic analysis based on the rpb2 gene, and 16 selected isolates from each clade were further characterized using the g3pdh, hsp60, and nep2 genes. The results revealed the presence of three distinct species, Botrytis cinerea, Botrytis sinoviticola, and Botrytis prunorum, among the sampled isolates. Additionally, this study reports for the first time the presence of B. sinoviticola on strawberry and isolates belonging to B. cinerea group S in Iran. These findings provide insights into the diversity and composition of Botrytis populations on Iranian host plants. Full article

Abiotic stressors such as cold temperatures have intensified due to climate change. Cold stress is a crucial factor that restricts the growth of barley in tropical and subtropical regions. Fast chlorophyll a-fluorescence induction (OJIP test) parameters are also used as biological markers for screening cultivars tolerant to abiotic stresses. Therefore, an experiment was conducted over three growing seasons in the research farm of Gonbad Kavous University to identify closely linked quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling OJIP test parameters under chilling stress, in the Iranian barley RILs population. For this study, the genome-wide composite interval mapping method was utilized to identify closely linked QTLs associated with OJIP test parameters under chilling stress conditions. Combined analysis of variance showed that the lines had significant differences (p < 0.05) in terms of OJIP test parameters, indicating genetic diversity among the lines. Also, Pearson correlation coefficients showed that grain yield had a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) with Fm, Fv, ABS/CSm, ETo/CSo, ETo/CSm, REo/CSo, REo/CSm, TRo/CSo and TRo/CSm parameters under chilling stress conditions. Cluster analysis using the WARD method identified 50 lines tolerant to chilling stress. A total of 48 stable and closely linked QTLs related to 12 OJIP test parameters were identified on seven barley chromosomes under chilling stress conditions. Full article

Urban overheating, intensified by climate change, poses a critical challenge in Central European cities, witnessing a rise in tropical days. Conventional mechanical cooling systems in buildings significantly contribute to carbon dioxide emissions, exacerbating global warming. In response, windcatchers—traditional Iranian natural cooling systems—emerge as a promising sustainable solution for contemporary architecture, even in non-arid climates. This research aims to evaluate windcatchers’ efficacy in improving building thermal comfort in Central European climates, focusing on Vienna’s urban environment. This study identifies optimal windcatcher designs by analyzing key variables: height variation, inlet dimensions, urban exposure, Building Management System (BMS) temperature thresholds, and integration with an earth tube system using Design Builder simulation software version 6. The findings reveal that a windcatcher standing at 2.5 m tall, with inlet dimensions of 0.9 m by 1.4 m, in an open, less densely populated urban setting, and with open valves when indoor temperatures surpass 22 °C, demonstrates the most effective reduction in cooling load. Moreover, both one-sided and two-sided windcatchers outperform conventional ventilation through openings. Additionally, combining a one-sided windcatcher with an earth tube system ensures efficient cooling even when exterior temperatures exceed 25 degrees Celsius. When augmented by a heat pump, this integrated system can provide heated ventilation. Full article

Mentalization, operationalized as reflective functioning (RF), is the ability to understand one’s own and another’s mental world implicitly or explicitly. RF is a newly discovered research field in Iran and is largely under-studied in Eastern cultures in general, underscoring the high need for cross-cultural studies in this field of research. A qualitative method was used to examine the ability to understand, process, and respond to high-arousal attachment situations in typical and clinical populations of Iranian children recruited from a Tehran primary school. A well-known semi-structured interview commonly used to assess RF in children was used to collect data. Required information on internalizing and externalizing symptoms, demographic information, and all formal diagnoses of children were collected by parents. The results indicated the identification of four different profiles of RF in children, one of which was adaptive, while the other three were maladaptive. Also, the results showed that typically developing children and those having a high social and economic status (SES) were characterized as having a more adaptive profile of RF, while children from the clinical population and those with a low SES reported a more maladaptive profile (passive mentalizing, helpless mentalizing, narcissistic mentalizing) of RF. The present study is an important step in increasing our understanding of the development of mentalization in children and has significant educational and clinical implications. Full article

Higher physical activity is generally associated with more favorable psychological functioning. However, the role of positive and negative affect in such associations is unclear. Accordingly, this cross-sectional study explored whether affect mediated the relationship of physical activity with psychological well-being (PWB) and psychological dysfunctioning (PD). Young Iranian adults (N = 200) completed self-rating questionnaires covering physical activity, positive and negative affect, and proxies of PWB and PD. Regression analyses indicated that higher physical activity levels and higher positive and lower negative affect predicted proxies of PWB. The same (albeit in the opposite direction) applied to proxies of PD. Structural equation modeling indicated that positive and negative affect mediated the relationship between physical activity and PWB/PD. Accordingly, change in affect might be an important mechanism behind the association of physical activity and PWB/PD. Future research should further explore this across target populations and cultural contexts. Longitudinal and/or experimental studies are needed to disentangle causality. Full article

To map the genomic regions and control chlorophyll fluorescence attributes under normal, salinity-, and drought-stress conditions in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) at the seedling stage, an experiment was conducted in 2019–2020 using 106 F8 lines resulting from the cross between Badia × Kavir. Initially, the different chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were evaluated. Under drought stress, the highest decrease was related to REo/CSm (59.56%), and the highest increase was related to dV/dto (77.17%). Also, under salinity stress, the highest decrease was related to Fv/Fo (59.56%), and the highest increase was related to DIo/RC (77.17%). Linkage maps were prepared using 152 SSR polymorphic markers, 72 ISSR alleles, 7 IRAP alleles, 29 CAAT alleles, 27 Scot alleles, and 15 iPBS alleles. The obtained map accounted for 999.2 centi-Morgans (cM) of the barley genome length (92% of the whole barley genome). The results indicated the importance of chromosomes 3, 2, and 7 in controlling ABS/CSm, Area, ETo/CSm, Fm, Fv, and ETo/RC under drought stress. qEToRCD-7, as a major QTL, controlled 18.3% of ETo/RC phenotypic variation under drought stress. Under salinity stress, the regions of chromosomes 2 and 7 (102 cM and 126 cM) controlled the parameters ABS/CSo, Fm, Fo, Fv, TRo/SCo, Area, ETo/CSm, and ETo/CSo. The results showed that chlorophyll fluorescence is an important parameter in the study of drought and salinity effects on barley. This is the first report of the investigation of changes in the genetic structure of quantitative genes controlling the fluorescence parameters associated with barley response to drought and salinity stresses in the Iranian barley RILs population. According to the obtained results, it is possible to use HVPLASC1B and EBmac0713 in normal conditions, ISSR21-2 and ISSR30-4 in drought conditions, and Bmac0047, Scot5-B, CAAT6-C, and ISSR30iPBS2076-4 in saline stress conditions to select genotypes with higher photosynthetic capacity in marker-assisted selection programs. The gene pool of the East Caucasus, encompassing modern-day Azerbaijan and Dagestan populations, was studied alongside adjacent populations using 83 Y-chromosome SNP markers. The analysis of genetic distances among 18 populations (N = 2216) representing Nakh-Dagestani, Altaic, and Indo-European language families revealed the presence of three components (Steppe, Iranian, and Dagestani) that emerged in different historical periods. The Steppe component occurs only in Karanogais, indicating a recent medieval migration of Turkic-speaking nomads from the Eurasian steppe. The Iranian component is observed in Azerbaijanis, Dagestani Tabasarans, and all Iranian-speaking peoples of the Caucasus. The Dagestani component predominates in Dagestani-speaking populations, except for Tabasarans, and in Turkic-speaking Kumyks. Each component is associated with distinct Y-chromosome haplogroup complexes: the Steppe includes C-M217, N-LLY22g, R1b-M73, and R1a-M198; the Iranian includes J2-M172(×M67, M12) and R1b-M269; the Dagestani includes J1-Y3495 lineages. We propose J1-Y3495 haplogroup’s most common lineage originated in an autochthonous ancestral population in central Dagestan and splits up ~6 kya into J1-ZS3114 (Dargins, Laks, Lezgi-speaking populations) and J1-CTS1460 (Avar-Andi-Tsez linguistic group). Based on the archeological finds and DNA data, the analysis of J1-Y3495 phylogeography suggests the growth of the population in the territory of modern-day Dagestan that started in the Bronze Age, its further dispersal, and the microevolution of the diverged population. Although different worldviews have been presented to analyze the conservation behaviors of farmers, limited empirical evidence exists for the use of the economic man worldview to analyze farmers’ water conservation behaviors (WCBs). Therefore, the conceptualization of farmers’ water conservation behavioral intentions through the lens of this worldview was the primary objective of this survey. To this aim, the extended planned behavior theory (PBT), which is the main theory of the economic man worldview, was employed. The study population was 36183 Iranian farmers, 380 of whom were interviewed in-person in the form a cross-sectional survey research design. An estimation of sample size was performed via the Krejcie and Morgan Table. Moreover, the distribution of the sample size was carried out by a multi-stage random sampling method. Validity and reliability, which are undeniable features of questionnaires in social and psychological sciences, were examined using different quantitative and qualitative indices. The obtained results indicated that the effect of intention towards water conservation (IWC) on WCB was positive and significant. Therefore, this research supports the main assumption of the PBT and the economic man worldview. However, according to the results, the power of IWC’s effect on WCB is not very significant. In addition, the variance explanation of WCB as the fundamental dependent variable is not very high. It can be mentioned that the economic man worldview has a relative and moderate power to analyze the WCBs of farmers. Hence, it is suggested that some variables, including moral norms, environmental concerns, and environmental values, are used to develop and increase the explanatory power of the PBT in future studies. This study is the first study of the applicability of the economic man approach in analyzing farmers’ WCBs. It could be used to open a new research window for future and interested researchers to conduct successful interventions in the field of water conservation. Full article
