This paper evaluates the performance of the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) technique within dense IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) network environments. As traditional CSMA/CA-based networks reach their scalability limits, this work investigates how OFDMA interacts with key MAC layer features, specifically frame aggregation (A-MPDU/A-MSDU) and Spatial Reuse (SR), using BSS Coloring and OBSS/PD thresholds. Through simulation-based analysis, the work demonstrates that OFDMA provides substantial scalability gains, with throughput improvements of up to 49% in Downlink (DL) and 70% in Uplink (UL), while effectively preventing delay escalation. However, the results also reveal that these benefits are highly sensitive to Resource Unit (RU) granularity and scheduler design. In scenarios with frame aggregation, legacy OFDM may still offer higher throughput, and the effectiveness of Spatial Reuse remains highly constrained in UL and DL-OFDMA due to protocol and power density limitations. The paper concludes that maximizing Wi-Fi 7 performance requires precise parameter tuning adjusted to specific traffic types, network topologies, and utilized mechanisms. Full article

UAV-Assisted Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (UAMANETs) provide flexible communication support in dynamic and infrastructure-limited environments. This paper studies a representative UAMANET architecture in which a subset of UAVs forms stable task clusters with ground nodes while simultaneously acting as relays in an airborne backbone network. To characterize the network capacity under contention-based medium access and multi-hop routing, we introduce Aggregate Multi-hop Information Efficiency (AMIE), a capacity-oriented metric that jointly accounts for MAC-layer contention, multi-hop routing, and end-to-end transmission reliability. Based on an IEEE 802.11p access model, we extend Bianchi’s CSMA/CA analytical framework to UAMANETs, enabling a quantitative characterization of how spectrum resource allocation affects AMIE through link activation probability, transmission interruption, and end-to-end hop count. Building on the derived analytical insights, we further develop a soft centralized resource management framework, in which an existing MSF-PSO algorithm is employed as a numerical solver to optimize resource allocation under implicit MAC-layer coupling constraints. Numerical results demonstrate that, compared with conventional IEEE 802.11p spectrum resource settings, the proposed framework can achieve substantial AMIE improvements under representative network configurations. In dense Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) environments, inter-network interference significantly degrades the reliability of medical data transmission. This paper proposes a novel MAC layer interference mitigation strategy that integrates interference-priority-weighted K-means++ clustering with graph-coloring-based time slot allocation. Unlike traditional coexistence schemes, our two-phase approach first partitions the network using a weighted metric combining physical distance and Interference Signal Strength (ISS), ensuring a balanced distribution of high-priority WBANs. Subsequently, we employ an enhanced Priority-Weighted Welch–Powell algorithm to assign collision-free time slots within each cluster. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed strategy outperforms IEEE 802.15.4, CSMA/CA, and random coloring benchmarks. It reduces inter-network interference by 26.7%, improves priority node distribution balance by 65.7%, and maintains a transmission success rate above 80% under high-load conditions. The proposed method offers a scalable and low-complexity solution for reliable vital sign monitoring in crowded healthcare scenarios. Full article

Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications are becoming the most important factor shaping network traffic. However, traditional controls developed for human-generated traffic are not able to cope with new demands. Thus, hybrid MAC protocols have been proposed to make use of the combined advantages of contention and reservation. Most of them are based on a contention stage (where a variant of CSMA/CA or ALOHA is used) followed by a reservation stage (e.g., TDMA or FDMA). In this paper, we introduce 2CA-R2, a hybrid MAC protocol for M2M communications intended to be used in the device domain. What distinguishes this proposal is that the contention stage is controlled by a conflict–resolution algorithm known as Adaptive-2C. The protocol was evaluated using a model based on a Markov chain and computer simulations. Its performance was compared with DCF, the MAC technique used in IEEE802.11 standards. Our results show significant improvements over DCF in various metrics of network performance across different traffic situations. We also evaluated the time the protocol takes to resolve an access conflict, and we observed substantial improvements in the number of stations that can be served with the same network resource (in some cases, around a 40% improvement). IEEE 802.11 is one of the most common medium access control (MAC) protocols used in wireless networks. The carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanisms in 802.11 have been designed under the assumption that all nodes in the network are cooperative and trustworthy. However, the potential for non-cooperative nodes exists, nodes that may purposefully misbehave in order to, for example, obtain extra bandwidth, conserve their resources, or disrupt network performance. This issue is further compounded when receivers such as Wi-Fi hotspots, normally trusted by other module nodes, also misbehave. Such issues, their detection, and mitigation have, we believe, not been sufficiently addressed in the literature. This research proposes a novel trust-incorporated MAC protocol (TMAC) which detects and mitigates complex node misbehavior for distributed network environments. TMAC introduces three main features into the original IEEE 802.11 protocol. First, each node assesses a trust level for their neighbors, establishing a verifiable backoff value generation mechanism with an incorporated trust model involving senders, receivers, and common neighbors. Second, TMAC uses a collaborative penalty scheme to penalize nodes that deviate from the IEEE 802.11 protocol. This feature removes the assumption of a trusted receiver. Third, a TMAC diagnosis mechanism is carried out for each distributed node periodically, to reassess neighbor status and to reclassify each based on their trust value. Simulation results in ns2 showed that TMAC is effective in diagnosing and starving selfish or misbehaving nodes in distributed wireless networks, improving the performance of trustworthy well-behaving nodes. The significant feature of TMAC is its ability to detect sender, receiver, and colluding node misbehavior at the MAC layer with a high level of accuracy, without the need to trust any of the communicating parties. A smart grid is a next-generation intelligent power grid that can maximize energy efficiency by monitoring power information in real time and by controlling the flow of power by introducing IT communication technology to the existing power grid. In order to apply a wireless communication network to a smart grid, it is necessary to be able to efficiently process large amounts of power-related data while enabling a high level of reliability and quality of service (QoS) support. In addition, international standards-based design is essential considering compatibility and scalability. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard is considered to be the most powerful communication method for processing data through the smart grid AMI. To reduce the energy consumption, as the duty cycle of the superframe increases, the probability of the congestion increases. However, this binary exponential algorithm in IEEE 802.15.4 standard does not account for the application of traffic characteristics that essentially negatively affect the smart grid network performances in terms of packet delivery ratio and time delay. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new transmission scheme to reduce performance degradation by excessive collisions in the content access period (CAP), when data transmission is performed in IEEE 802.15.4 applied to smart grids. In addition, we investigated the main research topics required when applying wireless networking technology to smart grids and suggested improvement measures. Simulation results showed that the proposed scheme increased the data delivery rate and reduced the latency, and it was confirmed that reliability was improved. Full article

Numerous Internet of Things (IoT) devices adopt the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which targets low data rate wireless networks. With the explosive growth in the use of IoT devices, it is essential to design effective and efficient channel access schemes for the 802.15.4 networks. In order to improve channel contention efficiency (CCE), which is defined as the number of times of successfully gaining the channel per unit of backoff time whereby throughput is improved, the scheme of enhancing channel contention efficiency (ECCE) has been proposed to jointly optimize the three key parameters of macMinBe, macMaxBe and macMaxCsmaBackoffs in the carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA-CA) mechanism in the 802.15.4 standard. A novel Markov chain was developed to model the CSMA-CA mechanism, which yielded the expected number of failures in gaining the channel, the expected number of backoff periods and the expected number of backoffs when a node intended to transmit a packet. These statistics resulted in CCE. An optimization problem that maximized the CCE with respect to the above-mentioned three key parameters was formulated. The solution to the optimization problem led to the optimal parameter values, which were applied in the ECCE scheme. The simulation results show that the proposed ECCE scheme outperformed the CSMA-CA mechanism in terms of CCE, delay and throughput. Full article

In the limited frequency spectrum shared by various wireless communication technologies, cross-technology interference is an important factor which determines communication performance. A variety of coexistence methods to reduce the impact of this interference have been studied, but most of them cannot explicitly coordinate the shared spectrum and are not practical. This paper presents an explicit coexistence mechanism using cross-technology communication among heterogeneous wireless technologies. This mimics “carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance” (CSMA/CA) via bidirectional cross-technology communication, which is called CTC-CSMA/CA. It allows communication between heterogeneous wireless technologies in order to achieve CSMA/CA. This accurately assigns required channel resources by directly sending and receiving feedback. CTC-CSMA/CA is a highly compatible technology because it does not require any modification to the IEEE 802.11 standard or any extra hardware. In addition, Zigbee can operate with a low duty cycle by synchronizing it to a periodic Wi-Fi beacon. We implemented CTC-CSMA/CA using a commodity Wi-Fi access point and a commercial Zigbee platform. Our experiments showed that the channels are coordinated more accurately by our method, which significantly improves Zigbee throughput, than by conventional schemes. We expect the proposed scheme to be an important application case in designing future cross-technology communication. Full article

One of the central communication infrastructures of the Internet of Things (IoT) is the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which defines Low Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (LR- WPAN). In order to share the medium fairly in a non-beacon-enabled mode, the standard uses Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA). The nature of connected objects with respect to various resource constraints makes them vulnerable to cyber attacks. One of the most aggressive DoS attacks is the greedy behaviour attack which aims to deprive legitimate nodes to access to the communication medium. The greedy or selfish node may violate the proper use of the CSMA/CA protocol, by tampering its parameters, in order to take as much bandwidth as possible on the network, and then monopolize access to the medium by depriving legitimate nodes of communication. Based on the analysis of the difference between parameters of greedy and legitimate nodes, we propose a method based on the threshold mechanism to identify greedy nodes. The simulation results show that the proposed mechanism provides a detection efficiency of 99.5%. Full article

Jamming attacks in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) scenarios are detrimental to the performance of these networks and affect the security and stability of the service perceived by users. Therefore, the evaluation of the effectiveness of smart environment platforms based on WSNs has to consider the system performance when data collection is executed under jamming attacks. In this work, we propose an experimental testbed to analyze the performance of a WSN using the IEEE 802.15.4 CSMA/CA unslotted mode under jamming attacks in terms of goodput, packet receive rate (PRR), and energy consumption to assess the risk for users and the network in the smart scenario. The experimental results show that constant and reactive jamming strategies severely impact the evaluated performance metrics and the variance’ of the received signal strength (RSS) for some signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) ranges. The measurements obtained using the experimental testbed were correlated with analytical models. The results show that in the presence of one interferer, for SINR values higher than 4.5 dB, the PRR is almost 0.99, and the goodput 3.05 Kbps, but the system performance is significantly degraded when the amount of interferers increases. Additionally, the energy efficiency associated with reactive strategies is superior to the constant attack strategy. Finally, based on the evaluated metrics and with the proposed experimental testbed, our findings offer a better understanding of jamming attacks on the sensor devices in real smart scenarios. Visible Light Communication (VLC) offers distinctive advantages over conventional radio frequency; wide unlicensed spectrum, resistance to electrometric interference and low susceptibility to security risks, are few to name. Excitingly, VLC becomes a cornerstone in several communication systems such as light fidelity, optical camera communication and the Internet of Radio Light. Most of these networks adopt the Carrier Sensing Multiple Access-Collision Avoidance (CSMA-CA) of IEEE 802.15.7, the official standard for the VLC, as a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol. Motivated by the crucial roles of MAC in shaping the performance of the VLC and the wide variety of operational conditions demanded by the enormous applications, this paper proposes a Modular Statistical Analytical Model (MSAM). The fundamental approach of MSAM is to segregate the interacting stochastic processes imposed by the CSMA-CA protocol into a set of its elementary subprocesses. The MSAM then synthesises these processes in such a way that quantifies their mutual dependency without making a strict assumption on their characteristics; thus, different operational conditions can be assessed without a need to reconstruct the model. Besides, MSAM employs the radiometry and photometry of VLC to derive mathematical expressions describing the hidden and exposed nodes from which the Imperfect Carrier Sensing (ICS) conditions are defined. The MSAM exploits statistical and queuing theorems to model a VLC as a network of G/G/1 queues from which several probability distributions, characterising the operations of VLC from different perspectives, are derived. Inter-departure, queuing, service time and successful service time are the main distributions in conjunction with throughput, total delay, probability of exposed and hidden node collisions, which are the main outputs of MSAM. Validation for the integrity of the MSAM under different scenarios is carried out by conducting a head-to-head comparison between its results and simulation outcomes. Full article

The representative media access control (MAC) mechanism of IEEE 802.11 is a distributed coordination function (DCF), which operates based on carrier-sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) with binary exponential backoff. The next amendment of IEEE 802.11 being developed for future Wi-Fi by the task group-be is called IEEE 802.11be, where the multi-link operation is mainly discussed when it comes to MAC layer operation. The multi-link operation discussed in IEEE 802.11be allows multi-link devices to establish multiple links and operate them simultaneously. Since the medium access on a link may affect the other links, and the conventional MAC mechanism has just taken account of a single link, the DCF should be used after careful consideration for multi-link operation. In this paper, we summarize the DCFs being reviewed to support the multi-radio multi-link operation in IEEE 802.11be and analyze their performance using the Markov chain model. Throughout the extensive performance evaluation, we summarize each MAC protocol’s pros and cons and discuss essential findings of the candidate MAC protocols. Full article

In this paper, the effect of channel conditions on the global behavior of a wireless Visible Light Communications (VLC) optical network are studied. It presents a system-level simulator that considers jointly a channel propagation model and the MAC mechanisms to have a realistic description of the network, even in situations where the emitted signal is heavily affected by reflections in any close surface or obstacle. The resulting platform also accurately evaluates both Line-Of-Sight (LOS) and Non-LOS (NLOS) contributions on each node and enables the effective use of Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) schemes as defined by IEEE 802.15.7r1 standard, as well as allows a correct evaluation of lifelike problems such as the effect of hidden nodes. This work shows the necessity of accurately modeling VLC MAC layer performances, taking also into account the physical nature of visible light propagation in indoor scenarios. Full article

As the reference communication standard of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the IEEE 802.15.4 standard has been adopted in various WSN-based applications. In many of these applications, one of the most common traffic pattern types is a periodic traffic patterns, however, the majority of existing analytical models target either saturated or unsaturated network traffic patterns. Furthermore, few of them can be directly extended to the periodic traffic scenario, since periodic traffic brings unstable load status to sensor nodes. To better characterize the WSNs with periodic traffic, we propose an accurate and scalable analytical framework for the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol. By formulating the relationship between clear channel assessment (CCA) and its successful probability from the perspective of channel state and node state, single node’s behavior and whole network’s performance under different network scales and traffic loads can be derived. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate the proposed framework in terms of both local statistics and overall statistics, and the results show that the model can represent the actual behavior and the real performance of both single node and whole network. Besides, as the simplified version of double CCAs mode (DS mode), single CCA mode (SS mode), is also analyzed with simple modifications on the proposed analytical framework. Combining the analytical framework with simulation results, the applicable network scenarios of two modes are also demonstrated respectively. Finally, an approximate distribution of one data packet’s backoff duration is proposed. With this approximate distribution, a conservative estimation of data packet’s average transmission latency in networks with given configurations can be easily carried out. Full article

The IEEE 802.15.6 standard has the potential to provide cost-effective and unobtrusive medical services to individuals with chronic health conditions. It is a low-power standard developed for wireless body area networks and enables wireless communication inside or near a human body. This standard utilizes a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol to improve network performance under different channel access priorities. However, the CSMA/CA proposed in the IEEE 802.15.6 standard has poor throughput performance and link reliability when some of the nodes deployed on a human body are hidden from each other. We employ the RTS/CTS scheme to solve hidden node problems in IEEE 802.15.6 networks over a lossy channel. To improve performance of the RTS/CTS scheme, we adjust transmission power levels of the nodes according to transmission failures. We estimate throughput and energy consumption of the proposed model by differentiating several parameters, such as contention window size, values of bit error ratios, number of nodes in different priority classes. The performance results are obtained through analytical approximations and simulations. We observe that the proposed model significantly improves performance of the IEEE 802.15.6 CSMA/CA by resolving hidden node problems. Full article
