This qualitative case study explores how two elementary classrooms of predominantly Pacific Islander students (the majority of whom identified as Native Hawaiian) worked toward developing their cultural competence through participation in an interdisciplinary classroom-based learning experience focused on Hawaiian culture-based STEAM and maker learning. Over a four-unit series focused on wildfire prevention, watersheds, and traditional mo‘olelo (storytelling), students engaged in collaborative, place-based learning. Findings reveal that cultural and academic competence were fostered through three primary mechanisms: integrating ancestral storytelling as a pedagogical tool; grounding academic content in hyper-localized ecological contexts; and navigating the “productive struggle” caused by the lack of any Pacific Island cultural representation in standard digital tools like Scratch and Canva. By adapting technologies to reflect their own identities, students simultaneously advanced their digital literacies and academic skills in science and language arts while honouring their heritage. This study underscores the importance of viewing cultural and STEAM learning as concurrent, mutually reinforcing processes. Our bounded case in particular highlights the possibility of how, when educators centre culture-based learning, classrooms can become spaces of cultural reclamation while supporting necessary academic competencies, helping to bridge the gap between student identity and the compulsory educational system. Research has examined the negative consequences of internalized weight bias on mental health (e.g., disordered eating, depression, anxiety). In South Korea’s patriarchal society, appearance rather than ability or talent is considered the principal determinant of a woman’s success, as evidenced by high rates of cosmetic surgery and anti-fat bias. Given strict appearance norms and pervasive weight stigma, we developed a Korean version of the Modified Weight Bias Internalization Scale (K-WBIS), examined its psychometric properties, and explored its associations with other established measures. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess the factor structure. An item was removed, and a revised 10-item one-factor model was estimated. The final model demonstrated an acceptable incremental model fit indices (CFI = 0.934, TLI = 0.909, SRMR = 0.047), although RMSEA remained elevated (RMSEA = 0.163). The 10-item K-WBIS demonstrated promising psychometric properties in a sample of South Korean adult women. Findings provide preliminary support for the K-WBIS and warrant further evaluation in larger and more diverse Korean-speaking populations. Full article

This study examines how mothers raising children with disabilities in American Samoa experience the processes of seeking diagnosis, navigating special education, and advocating for services within an insular rural context. American Samoa, an unincorporated U.S. territory located 2600 miles from Hawaiʻi with a population under 50,000, represents a case of what we term insular rurality—a condition in which the structural disadvantages of rurality are intensified by oceanic isolation, territorial governance, and colonial history. Data were collected through three focus groups with fifteen mothers whose children hold a range of disability diagnoses, with a card sort activity at the outset of each session serving as an idiographic anchor to protect individual voice within the group format. Analysis followed Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis adapted for focus groups (IPA-FG), proceeding from line-by-line exploratory noting through Personal Experiential Themes and Group Experiential Themes within each focus group case to cross-case convergence and divergence analysis, interpreted through the Fonofale model of Pacific wellness. Findings reveal two overarching themes: systemic invalidation, in which mothers encountered deficit-based assumptions, stagnant educational goals, and institutional disengagement; and parent peer support as the primary infrastructure, in which mothers became de facto experts, built community-driven solutions, and envisioned more inclusive futures. Technology emerged as a contradictory force—valuable for parent learning but largely ineffective for children’s remote therapy. These findings suggest how workforce shortages and geographic isolation create conditions in which maternal advocacy becomes a systems-level necessity rather than a personal choice. Implications for rural education policy, IDEA implementation in U.S. territories, and culturally grounded family support are discussed. Full article

Objective: Extending prior psychometric work with a Hawaiʻi-based college sample, this secondary cross-sectional study examined racial and gender group differences in mindfulness, engaged living, and psychological inflexibility within that same Hawaiʻi-based sample. Methods: Consistent with the grouping strategy used in that previous psychometric work, participants were categorized into 402 Asian American (263 women, 139 men), 260 White American (199 women, 61 men), and 406 combined All Others (301 women, 105 men) students, all recruited from a four-year public university in Hawaiʻi. After informed consent, participants voluntarily and anonymously completed an online survey containing self-report measures of interest. Results: Asian American students reported lower scores on measures of observing, describing, and non-judging facets of mindfulness than White American students. Men reported higher describing, non-distractibility, non-judging, and non-reacting scores than women, and White American men showed higher non-autopiloting than White American women. For engaged living and psychological inflexibility, White American students reported greater life fulfillment and lower psychological inflexibility than Asian American and All Others groups. Asian American women reported lower recognizing-values scores than White American women, and women overall endorsed greater psychological inflexibility than men. These differences, although statistically significant, were generally small and did not appear to be clinically meaningful. Associations among study variables as well as their roles in psychological distress were also examined within each racial group. Conclusions: Keeping several notable limitations in mind, this secondary cross-sectional investigation provided a preliminary examination of mindfulness, engaged living, and psychological inflexibility across racial and gender group categories, using methodological and psychometric decisions tailored to the present Hawaiʻi-based sample. We hope that our preliminary findings encourage further investigation in this domain. Full article

The high-rate biological contactor (HRBC) is an enhanced-primary, biosorption-based, carbon-diversion wastewater treatment process with short hydraulic retention time (HRT), short solids retention time (SRT), low dissolved oxygen (DO), and high food-to-microorganism ratio (F/M). This paper presents modifications to a commercial full-plant wastewater biodegradation model using extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in waste activated sludge (WAS) to simulate pilot test biosorption data. Bench-scale HRBC tests found that each mg of EPS as COD (CODEPS) biosorbed 1.02 mg sCOD contained in raw wastewater. The fraction of AS organics identified as EPS in terms of COD was 37% in a conventional AS (CAS), 33% in a trickling filter-solids contact (TF/SC), and 18% in a membrane bioreactor (MBR). The modeling process used stoichiometry equations to convert EPS from its constituent concentrations (carbohydrates, proteins, humic acids, uronic acids) into COD. The conversion did not alter the finding that the normalized total EPS showed a positive relationship with soluble chemical oxygen demand sCOD biosorption with a 0.91 coefficient of determination. The modified commercial biodegradation model gave a maximum error of −12.6% when simulating pilot-scale results, and 80% of all data points were less than ±10% error. The modified model predicted 16% sCOD biosorption by EPS using the design data for a full-scale HRBC facility currently under construction. Full article

Temperature affects the battery voltage response, and it is essential to take this influence into consideration for diagnosis purposes, as it could be misinterpreted for degradation. Temperature affects cell kinetics, and a good proxy to emulate this impact is to use electrode data at different C rates. This work further validates this concept by analyzing the relationship between temperature and rate at the electrode level for commercial graphite//LiFePO4 and (silicon, graphite)//LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cells. It will be shown that excellent emulation accuracy for both the voltage response and the capacity retention can be obtained for temperatures varying between −14 °C and 55 °C. Full article

Background: Delivering comprehensive cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment across Hawaiʻi and the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) is constrained by geographic isolation, oncology workforce shortages, and persistent cancer inequities. Objectives: The University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, partners with community healthcare systems to address cancer health disparities. Here, we describe an implementation-focused strategy initiated in December 2024 that is designed to improve equitable access to evidence-based oncology services across the catchment area. Approach: This program description integrates publicly available demographic and health system data and presents a structured implementation framework centered on (1) workforce development and oncology training pathways; (2) a statewide clinical oncology network supported by telehealth; (3) community-engaged screening and early detection outreach; and (4) strengthening clinical research and trial infrastructure with deliberate inclusion of underserved populations. Evaluation: We outline an evaluation framework incorporating process and outcome metrics spanning workforce capacity, screening participation, timeliness of care, clinical trial enrollment, and equity indicators stratified by county, island, and population group. Conclusions: This approach offers a scalable, implementation-oriented model for developing an academic oncology ecosystem that emphasizes measurement, accountability, and equity, with potential applicability to other geographically dispersed and ethnically diverse regions. A central goal of carbon (C) management and a critical outcome of sustainable land stewardship is reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture, forestry, and other land uses. Integrating GHG considerations into management can take many forms, but C credit markets are increasingly providing sources of private capital to offset the often high costs of stewardship. In Hawaiʻi, participation in voluntary C credit markets and the establishment of jurisdictional compliance C markets are constrained by a lack of institutional capacity, successful demonstrations, and high-quality data, making private capital for C market-based approaches in Hawaiʻi difficult to access. The State of Carbon in Hawaiʻi Hui (hui translates to partnership in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, the Hawaiian language) convened landowners, researchers, federal and state government professionals, and for-profit and not-for-profit organization staff to better understand limitations to implementing C management in Hawaiʻi. This paper describes why the State of Carbon in Hawaiʻi Hui was formed, how we planned for, hosted, and assessed the success of a C-focused summit, and what outcomes resulted from this process. A Pathway Forward document, a decision support tool, and this article are outcomes. These products will serve as resources for those considering Hawaiʻi-based forest C projects, as well as contributing towards the legislated goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Hawaiʻi. Our knowledge exchange process is readily replicable and can support a variety of efforts in environmental conservation and beyond. Full article

The suicide rate in the U.S. has increased in the last two decades despite continued efforts to mitigate risks. This study explored potential variability in suicide rates by occupation in Hawaiʻi by analyzing 2430 death certificates from 2013 to 2023. Of these, 1988 suicide deaths occurred among individuals aged 20 to 64 years old, who constituted the study sample. Suicide death was identified using ICD-10 underlying cause of death codes X60–X84 and Y87. Occupations were coded using the 1990 Census Bureau classification scheme, and nearly all records included open-text occupation information, supplemented by business/industry descriptions. The numerator was calculated as the 11-year suicide total by occupation; the denominator was based on the annual PERWT population estimate (U.S. Census/IPUMS data) over the same 11-year period. The mean victim age was 41, and 78% were males, with notable variation by occupation. Occupations with the highest suicide rates included carpenters, construction, farmers and fishers, musicians and artists, as well as landscapers and groundskeepers, comparable to national and a few other state-specific reports. The findings are limited, constrained by potential confounding factors and the multi-factorial nature of risk of suicide, imprecise numerator and denominator match, as well as the influence of retirees in the computation of rates. The place and people of Waiʻanae, Hawaiʻi, are rich in connection with ʻāina (natural environment) and culture. Counter to this strengths-based approach, metrics and narratives imposed by outside systems assess many communities like ours as “sick”, “poor”, or “unwell”. This paper details our community’s approach to defining “well-being” around the values specific to our place, overseen by a council of community leaders with decades of experience supporting youth. The development was a mixed methods process including formal focus groups, informal community conversations, review of existing models, and collaboration with a professional artist. Centering community was the priority through each phase, engaging youth, parents, cultural practitioners, healthcare providers, and educators. Our community built the Kaiona Framework around the moʻolelo (traditional story) of Kaiona who helps the lost find home through empathy and compassion. Well-being is grounded in connection to, in relationship with, and in service to ʻāina. The child is at the center of our work, but inseparable from the family, community, and wider nation of people. Wellness comprises four values vital to our community: mauli ola, a balanced state of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and environmental health; waiwai, abundance and prosperity; pilina, mutually sustaining relationships; and ea, self-determination and agency. Protected area management plays a crucial role in conserving biodiversity, especially in areas where increasing demand for natural resources is associated with fast-growing human populations, such as West Africa. Investigating the perceptions of people with first-hand knowledge of protected area management provides important insights about biodiversity conservation, wildlife law enforcement, and human activities to inform adaptive management. Using 442 semi-structured interviews, we assessed the perceptions of park rangers and local residents in and around Fazao-Malfakassa National Park in Togo, West Africa, which was managed by the non-profit Franz Weber Foundation from 1990 to 2015, and since 2015 has been managed by the government of Togo. Both rangers and residents reported significant economic concerns following the park’s transfer from private to state management, with salary declines negatively affecting rangers and declines in community development projects and income-generating activities negatively affecting residents. Law enforcement capacity and resources also declined under state management, severely undermining the ability of rangers to curb illegal activities in the park, especially poaching and the destruction of trees to harvest wild honey and produce commercial charcoal. All rangers and most residents who had experience with both private and state park management preferred private management. There is an urgent need to increase surveillance and law enforcement capacity in the park to combat poaching and other illegal activities, and to engage local communities in the park’s long-term protection. To this end, rangers and residents are calling for change, and specifically recommend returning the park to competent private management to safeguard Togo’s last large refuge for nature and wildlife. Research examining the interaction between prayer and religious identity and its effect on prosocial behavior is limited. Drawing data from 1602 single Roman Catholics ages 12–39, this study examined the relationship among public prayer, private prayer, religious identity, and prosocial behaviors, emphasizing the moderating role of religious identity. Analyses revealed a positive association between public and private religious practices, religious identity, and prosocial behavior. Public prayer significantly predicted prosocial behavior, while private prayer and religious identity did not exhibit direct effects. Crucially, religious identity moderated the relationship between public prayer and prosocial behavior, as the positive influence of public prayer on prosocial behaviors was significant only at average to high levels of religious identity. No moderating effect was found for the interaction between private prayer and religious identity. These findings underscore the importance of private and public prayer and strong religious identity in fostering prosocial tendencies among Filipino Catholic youth. Full article

Live coral cover is a key indicator of coral reef composition, health, and functioning. Airborne imaging spectroscopy provides verifiably accurate estimates of live coral cover to seawater depths of 25 m, yet satellite-based approaches have not achieved the same level of performance. The new Tanager-1 satellite carries a high-fidelity imaging spectrometer in sun-synchronous Earth orbit, providing an opportunity to transition from airborne to spaceborne imaging of live corals and other benthic constituents. We coordinated overpasses of Tanager-1 and Global Airborne Observatory (GAO) imaging spectrometer measurements of coral reef to a depth of 25 m in Hawaiʻi. Tanager-1 has a spatial resolution of 30 m, while the GAO data were collected at 2 m resolution, requiring detailed modeling to simulate 30 m data for subsequent comparison to the satellite data. At 30 m resolution, the two sensors generated similar geographic patterns of live coral, macroalgal, and sand cover. Field validation indicated similar precision and accuracy of live coral cover estimates, and the ratio of live coral to macroalgal cover proved similar between sensors. Overall results indicate that live coral cover can be mapped with high-fidelity imaging spectroscopy from Earth orbit. With the advent of more spaceborne imaging spectrometers, a new era of live coral monitoring will be possible, filling a critical gap for repeated assessments of reef compositional change at a global level. The recent review by Veron et al. (2025) posits that quantitative genomic evidence used to understand coral evolution should be secondary to species hypotheses derived from expert opinion based on field experience. The authors argue that morphological “biological entities” should take precedence over molecular evidence when conflicts arise. This perspective required the rejection of extensive, independent molecular datasets that have progressively converged on a robust evolutionary framework for reef corals. Here, we reaffirm how prioritising subjective visual assessments over quantitative genetic and genomic data is methodologically unsound and scientifically regressive. We reject the framing of this perspective as “morphology versus molecules”. Rather, it is a fundamental divergence between two opposing philosophies: a static system anchored in non-reproducible expert judgement, and an integrative framework where genetic data provide the necessary independent test of morphological hypotheses. We show how a reliance on “field entities” obscures true morphological patterns by failing to distinguish between phenotypic plasticity, convergence, and evolutionary divergence. Effective taxonomy requires species hypotheses to be testable, and to stand or fall on the strength of reproducible evidence. Such a framework does not replace morphology; it validates it by providing an explicit, testable basis for evaluating morphological hypotheses. The integration of testable, reproducible molecular analysis with other lines of evidence including morphology is the benchmark of modern taxonomy across all Kingdoms of Life. We address the logical inconsistencies in the general arguments put forward by Veron et al. (2025) and refute their specific rejection of recent Acropora species-level revision with reproducible data. Full article

(1) Background: Wound healing is a highly coordinated process encompassing hemostasis, inflammation, angiogenesis, keratinocyte migration, collagen deposition, and extracellular matrix remodeling. Successful repair also requires adequate nutrient and oxygen delivery through a well-developed vascular supply. Disruption of these processes can occur through aberrations in diverse biological pathways, including extracellular matrix organization, cellular adhesions, angiogenesis, and immune regulation. (2) Methods: We reviewed mechanisms of impaired tissue repair in monogenic disorders by focusing on three categories—connective tissue, hematological/immunological, and aging-related disorders—to illustrate how single-gene defects disrupt inflammation, cellular proliferation, and matrix remodeling. Additionally, we reviewed various polygenic disorders—chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and obesity—to contrast complex multifactorial pathologies with single-gene defects. (3) Results: This review establishes that genetic impediments, despite their distinct etiologies, monogenic and polygenic disorders share critical downstream failures in the wound healing cascade. While monogenic diseases illustrate direct causal links between specific protein deficits and repair failure, polygenic diseases demonstrate how multifactorial stressors overwhelm the body’s regenerative capacity. (4) Conclusions: This review synthesizes current evidence on both monogenic diseases and polygenic contributions to impaired wound healing. These findings highlight that genetic susceptibility is a decisive factor in the ability to restore tissue homeostasis. This underscores the profound impact of genetic background on the efficacy of hemostasis, inflammation, and remodeling. Full article
