Agronomical Responses of Elite Winter Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Varieties in Phenotyping Experiments Under Continuous Water Withdrawal and Optimal Water Management in Greenhouses

Drought stress is a major environmental constraint that significantly reduces wheat productivity worldwide. In this study, seventeen wheat genotypes were evaluated under well-watered and drought-stressed conditions across two consecutive years (2023–2024) in a controlled greenhouse experiment. Twenty morphological and agronomic traits were recorded, and their responses to prolonged water limitation were assessed using multivariate statistical methods, including three-way ANOVA, principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis. Drought stress significantly decreased all traits except the harvest index (HI), with the most severe reductions observed in traits related to secondary spikes (e.g., grain weight reduced by 95%). The ANOVA results confirmed significant genotype × treatment (G × T) interactions for key agronomic traits, with the strongest effect observed for total grain weight (F = 7064.30, p < 0.001). A PCA reduced the 20 original variables to five principal components, explaining 87.2% of the total variance. These components reflected distinct trait groups associated with productivity, spike architecture, and development in phenology. Cluster analysis based on PCA scores grouped genotypes into three clusters with contrasting drought response profiles. A yield-based evaluation confirmed the cluster structure, distinguishing genotypes with a stable performance (average yield loss ~58%) from highly sensitive ones (~70% loss). Overall, the findings demonstrate that drought tolerance in wheat is governed by complex trait interactions. Integrating a trait-based multivariate analysis with a yield stability assessment enables the identification of genotypes with superior adaptation to water-limited environments, providing an excellent genotype background for future breeding efforts. This contribution aims to honour Guido Barbiellini’s profound interest in the interpretation and impact of quantum mechanics by examining the implications of the so-called before–before Experiment on quantum entanglement. This experiment was inspired by talks and discussions with John Bell at CERN. This was during the years when John and Guido co-worked, promoting the mission of the laboratory: “to advance the boundaries of human knowledge”. As the experiment uses measuring devices in motion, it can be considered a complement to entanglement experiments using stationary measuring devices, which have meanwhile been awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics. The before–before Experiment supports the idea that the quantum realm exists beyond space and time and that the quantum state is a real mental entity concerning choices. As it also leads us to a better understanding of the ‘quantum collapse’ and the measurement process, we pay homage to Guido’s work on detectors, such as his collaborations on the DELPHI experiment at CERN, on cosmic ray detection at the International Space Station, and gamma-ray astrophysics during a large NASA space mission. This paper discusses iconographic features of the deity or “demon” Medjed (Mḏd). The specific and unusual image of this character is only found during the 21st Dynasty and is unknown in the funerary art of the New Kingdom and Late Period. Only oneYe coffin and nine papyri are known in which the image of Medjed is depicted. Eight are in the context of Spell 17 of the Book of the Dead. In the text of Spell 17, Medjed is described in lines 71–72 of Grapow’s Urk. V Abschnitt 24. The “invisibility” of this “demon” is evidently the reason for his unusual iconography: Medjed has a conical shaped body, with human legs. Although he does not have a true head, his eyes are indicated, and he wears a belt. Equally the deity could be depicted as a figure covered entirely in a conical cover except for the eyes and feet, which are visible. This curious treatment can be understood as an attempt by Egyptian artists to depict an invisible being. Full article

Research on Pricing Strategies of Knowledge Payment Products Considering the Impact of Embedded Advertising Under the User-Generated Content Model

In UGC-based knowledge trading platforms, the abundance of personalized content often leads to varying quality levels. By incorporating embedded advertising, platforms can incentivize knowledge producers to produce high-quality content; however, the uncertainty in managing embedded advertisements increases the complexity of pricing knowledge products. This paper examines the impact of embedded advertising on the pricing of knowledge products, aims to maximize the profits of both knowledge producer and the platform. Based on Stackelberg game theory, two pricing decision models are developed under different advertising management modes: the platform-managed mode (where the platform determines the advertising intensity) and the advertiser-managed mode (where the advertiser determines the advertising intensity). The study analyzes the effects of UGC product quality, consumer sensitivity to advertising, and power structure on knowledge product pricing, and derives threshold conditions for optimal pricing. The results indicate that (1) When the quality of UGC knowledge product exceeds a certain threshold, platform-managed advertising becomes profitable. (2) Under the platform-managed mode, both the platform and knowledge producer can adopt price-increasing strategies to enhance profits. (3) Under the advertiser-managed mode, the platform can leverage differences in power structure to optimize revenue, while knowledge producer can actively enhance his pricing power to achieve mutual benefits with the platform. This study provides theoretical support and practical guidance for advertising cooperation mechanisms and pricing strategies for knowledge products in UGC-based knowledge trading platforms. Metro carriages, as enclosed transport microenvironments, have been understudied regarding pollution characteristics and health risks from ACs, especially during high-temperature summers that amplify exposure. This study applied NTS techniques for the first time across three major Chengdu metro lines, systematically identifying sixteen ACs, including hazardous species such as acetophenone, benzonitrile, and benzoic acid that are often overlooked in conventional BTEX-focused monitoring. The TAC concentration reached 41.40 ± 5.20 µg/m3, with half of the compounds exhibiting significant increases during peak commuting periods. Source apportionment using diagnostic ratios and PMF identified five major contributors: carriage material emissions (36.62%), human sources (22.50%), traffic exhaust infiltration (16.67%), organic solvents (16.55%), and industrial emissions (7.66%). Although both non-cancer (HI) and cancer (TCR) risks for all population groups were below international thresholds, summer tourists experienced higher exposure than daily commuters. Notably, child tourists showed the greatest vulnerability, with a TCR of 5.83 × 10−7, far exceeding that of commuting children (1.88 × 10−7). Benzene was the dominant contributor, accounting for over 50% of HI and 70% of TCR. This study presents the first integrated NTS and quantitative risk assessment to characterise ACs in summer metro environments, revealing a broader range of hazardous compounds beyond BTEX. It quantifies population-specific risks, highlights children’s heightened vulnerability. The findings fill critical gaps in ACs exposure and provide a scientific basis for improved air quality management and pollution mitigation strategies in urban rail transit systems. Full article

MicroRNA210 Suppresses Mitochondrial Metabolism and Promotes Microglial Activation in Neonatal Hypoxic–Ischemic Brain Injury

Neuroinflammation is the major contributor to the pathology of neonatal hypoxic–ischemic (HI) brain injury. Our previous studies have demonstrated that microRNA210 (miR210) inhibition with antisense locked nucleic acid (LNA) inhibitor mitigates neuroinflammation and provides neuroprotection after neonatal HI insult. However, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In the present study, using miR210 knockout (KO) mice and microglial cultures, we tested the hypothesis that miR210 promotes microglial activation and neuroinflammation through suppressing mitochondrial function in microglia after HI. Neonatal HI brain injury was conducted on postnatal day 9 (P9) wild-type (WT) and miR210 knockout (KO) mouse pups. We found that miR210 KO significantly reduced brain infarct size at 48 h and improved long-term locomotor functions assessed by an open field test three weeks after HI. Moreover, miR210 KO mice exhibited reduced IL1β levels, microglia activation and immune cell infiltration after HI. In addition, in vitro studies of microglia exposed to oxygen–glucose deprivation (OGD) revealed that miR210 inhibition with LNA reduced OGD-induced expression of Il1β and rescued OGD-mediated downregulation of mitochondrial iron–sulfur cluster assembly enzyme (ISCU) and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation activity. To validate the link between miR210 and microglia activation, isolated primary murine microglia were transfected with miR210 mimic or negative control. The results showed that miR210 mimic downregulated the expression of mitochondrial ISCU protein abundance and induced the expression of proinflammatory cytokines similar to the effect observed with ISCU silencing RNA. In summary, our results suggest that miR210 is a key regulator of microglial proinflammatory activation through reprogramming mitochondrial function in neonatal HI brain injury. Full article

Effects of Water Use Efficiency Combined with Advancements in Nitrogen and Soil Water Management for Sustainable Agriculture in the Loess Plateau, China

In China’s Loess Plateau, sustainable agricultural end products are affected by an insufficiency of water resources. Rising crop water use efficiency (WUE) through field management pattern improvement is a crucial plan of action to address this issue. However, there is no agreement among researchers on the most appropriate field management practices regarding WUE, which requires further integrated quantitative analysis. We conducted a meta-analysis by quantifying the effect of agricultural practices surrounding nitrogen (N) fertilizer management. The two experimental cultivars were Yunhan–20410 and Yunhan–618. The subplots included nitrogen 0 kg·ha−1 (N0), 90 kg·ha−1 (N90), 180 kg·ha−1 (N180), 210 kg·ha−1 (N210), and 240 kg·ha−1 (N240). Our results show that higher N rates (up to N210) enhanced water consumption during the node-flowering and flowering-maturity time periods. YH–618 showed higher water use during the sowing–greening and node-flowering periods but decreased use during the greening-node and flowering-maturity periods compared to YH–20410. The N210 treatment under YH–618 maximized water use efficiency (WUE). Increased N rates (N180–N210) decreased covering temperatures (Tmax, Tmin, Taver) during flowering, increasing the level of grain filling. Spike numbers rose with N application, with an off-peak at N210 for strong-gluten wheat. The 1000-grain weight was at first enhanced but decreased at the far end of N180–N210. YH–618 with N210 achieved a harvest index (HI) similar to that of YH–20410 with N180, while excessive N (N240) or water reduced the HI. Dry matter accumulation increased up to N210, resulting in earlier stabilization. Soil water consumption from wintering to jointing was strongly correlated with pre-flowering dry matter biological process and yield, while jointing–flowering water use was linked to post-flowering dry matter and spike numbers. Post-flowering dry matter accumulation was critical for yield, whereas spike numbers positively impacted yield but negatively affected 1000-grain weight. In conclusion, our results provide evidence for determining suitable integrated agricultural establishment strategies to ensure efficient water use and sustainable production in the Loess Plateau region. This mini-review traces the evolution of axion searches at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), beginning with the early proposal by Guido Barbiellini in 1982 and culminating in the recent advances of the NA62 and NA64 experiments. We discuss the experimental strategies employed in early beam dump searches, the current status of axion and axion-like particle (ALP) searches at the CERN SPS and future directions. This review serves as a tribute to Guido Barbiellini’s scientific legacy and his visionary contributions to this field. Full article

Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification is an important task in the field of remote sensing, with far-reaching practical significance. Most Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) only focus on local spatial features and ignore global spectral dependencies, making it difficult to completely extract spectral information in HSI. In contrast, Vision Transformers (ViTs) are widely used in HSI due to their superior feature extraction capabilities. However, existing Transformer models have challenges in achieving spectral–spatial feature fusion and maintaining local structural consistency, making it difficult to strike a balance between global modeling capabilities and local representation. To this end, we propose a Prompt-Gated Transformer with a Spatial–Spectral Enhancement (PGTSEFormer) network, which includes a Channel Hybrid Positional Attention Module (CHPA) and Prompt Cross-Former (PCFormer). The CHPA module adopts a dual-branch architecture to concurrently capture spectral and spatial positional attention, thereby enhancing the model’s discriminative capacity for complex feature categories through adaptive weight fusion. PCFormer introduces a Prompt-Gated mechanism and grouping strategy to effectively model cross-regional contextual information, while maintaining local consistency, which significantly enhances the ability for long-distance dependent modeling. Experiments were conducted on five HSI datasets and the results showed that overall accuracies of 97.91%, 98.74%, 99.48%, 99.18%, and 92.57% were obtained on the Indian pines, Salians, Botswana, WHU-Hi-LongKou, and WHU-Hi-HongHu datasets. This article investigates the role of space in the fiction of Jeffrey Eugenides, focusing on The Virgin Suicides (1993) and Middlesex (2002) through the lens of spatial theory. Drawing on key thinkers such as Henri Lefebvre, Michel Foucault, Edward Soja, Yi-Fu Tuan, and Doreen Massey, the study explores how Eugenides constructs spatial environments that not only frame but actively shape the identities, desires, and traumas of his characters. In The Virgin Suicides, suburban domestic spaces are shown to function as heterotopias—sites of surveillance, repression, and mythologized femininity—while Middlesex engages with transnational and urban spaces to narrate diasporic and intersex identity as dynamic, embodied, and liminal. The analysis reveals that Eugenides uses space as both a narrative device and a thematic concern to interrogate gender, memory, and power. Rather than passive backdrops, the novelistic spaces become charged arenas of conflict and transformation, reflecting and resisting dominant socio-cultural discourses. This study argues that space in Eugenides’ fiction operates as a critical register for understanding the politics of belonging and the production of subjectivity. By situating Eugenides within the broader field of literary spatiality, this article contributes to contemporary debates in literary geography, gender studies, and American fiction. Full article

Human cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis is a complex parasitic disease marked by dynamic host–parasite interactions and immunomodulation. Extracellular vesicles (EV) derived from immune cells have emerged as key mediators of intercellular communication and potential biomarkers in infectious diseases. In this study, we combined a modified lymphocyte proliferation assay with nano-flow cytometry to quantify and phenotype EV released by CD4+, CD8+, and CD14+ cells in PBMC cultures from CL patients at different clinical stages: before treatment (PBT), during treatment (PDT), and post-treatment (PET) with antimonial. Healthy individuals (HI) were included as physiological controls. Upon stimulation with L. (V.) braziliensis antigens, we observed a distinct modulation of EV subsets. In the PBT group, CD4+ and CD14+ EV were significantly reduced, while CD8+ EV remained elevated. During PDT and PET, EV concentrations were restored across all subsets. These findings suggest that L. (V.) braziliensis selectively modulates the release of immune cell–derived EV, possibly as an immune evasion mechanism. The restoration of EV release following antimonial therapy highlights their potential as sensitive biomarkers for disease activity and treatment monitoring. This study offers novel insights into the immunoregulatory roles of EV in CL and underscores their relevance in host–parasite interactions. Full article

Fritillaria unibracteata is a rare and endangered medicinal plant in the Liliaceae family, whose bulbs have been used in traditional Chinese traditional medicine for over 2000 years. The mevalonate (MVA) pathway is involved in the growth, development, response to environmental stress, and active ingredient production of plants; however, the functional characterization of MVA-pathway genes in the Liliaceae family remains poorly documented. In this study, an Acetyl-CoA C-acetyltransferase gene (FuAACT) was first cloned from F. unibracteata. It exhibited structural features of the thiolase family and showed the highest sequence identity with the Dioscorea cayenensis homolog. The Km, Vmax, and Kcat of the recombinant FuAACT were determined to be 3.035 ± 0.215 μM, 0.128 ± 0.0058 μmol/(min·mg), and 1.275 ± 0.0575 min−1, respectively. The optimal catalytic conditions for FuAACT were ascertained to be 30 °C and pH 8.9. It was stable below 50 °C. His361 was confirmed to be a key amino acid residue to enzymatic catalysis by site-directed mutagenesis. Subsequent subcellular localization experiments demonstrated that FuAACT was localized in chloroplasts and cytoplasm. FuAACT-overexpressing transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana plants showed higher drought tolerance than wild-type plants. This phenotypic difference was corroborated by significant differences in seed germination rate, lateral root number, plant height, and leaf number (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the FuAACT transgenic plants resulted in the formation of a more developed fibrous root system. These results indicated that the FuAACT gene revealed substantial biological activity in vitro and in vivo, hopefully providing the basis for its further research and application in liliaceous ornamental and medicinal plants. The study of historical monuments within both architectural and literary frameworks reveals a dynamic interplay between scientific observation and artistic interpretation—a vital characteristic of travel writing/the travelogue. This approach, exemplified by British traveler and writer Henry Finnis Blosse Lynch (1862–1913), reflects how factual detail and creative representation are seamlessly integrated in depictions of sites, landscapes, and cultural scenes. This case study highlights Lynch as a pioneering explorer who authored the first comprehensive volume on Armenian architecture and as a writer who vividly portrayed Armenian monuments through both verbal description and photographic imagery, becoming the first traveler to document such sites using photography. Additionally, this paper emphasizes the significance of Lynch’s detailed accounts of architectural monuments, churches, monasteries, cities, villages, populations, religious communities, and educational institutions in vivid language. The careful study of his work can contribute meaningfully to the investigation of the travelogue as a literary genre and to the preservation and protection of the architectural heritage of historical and contemporary Armenia, particularly in regions facing cultural or political threats. Background: More than 1500 genes are associated with developmental delay and intellectual disability, with variants in many of these genes contributing to a shared phenotype. The discovery of variants of uncertain significance (VUS) found in these genes during genetic testing can lead to ambiguity and further delay in diagnosis and medical management. Phenotyping, additional genetic testing, and functional studies can all add valuable information to help reclassify these variants. Here we demonstrate the clinical utility of epigenetic signatures in prioritizing variants of uncertain significance in genes associated with developmental delay (DD) and intellectual disability (ID). Methods: Genome sequencing was performed in a male with developmental delay. He was found to have VUSs in both PHF6 and DDB1 genes, linked with Börjeson–Forssman–Lehmann syndrome (BFLS) and White–Kernohan syndrome (WHIKERS), respectively. These two disorders share a similar phenotype but have distinct inheritance patterns and molecular pathogenic mechanisms. DNA methylation profiling (DNAm) of whole blood was performed using the clinically validated EpiSign assay. Results: The proband’s methylation profile demonstrated a strong correlation with the BFLS methylation signature, supporting the PHF6 variant as a likely cause of his neurodevelopmental disorder. Conclusions: Epigenetic testing for disorders with distinct methylation patterns can provide diagnostic utility when a patient presents with variants of uncertain significance in genes associated with developmental delay. Epigenetic signatures can also guide genetic counselling and family planning. Full article

This article investigates the paradox of disappearance as both an aesthetic and a political phenomenon. Taking inspiration from Radiohead’s song “How to Disappear Completely,” it argues that aesthetic representations of disappearance never achieve total erasure; instead, they give rise to new forms of visibility. A true aesthetics of disappearance does not exist. Through case studies such as H.G. Wells’s The Invisible Man and Guy Debord’s Society of the Spectacle, the article demonstrates that disappearance is always mediated: the invisible man becomes hyper-visible through his clothing, bandages, and mask, while the spectacle conceals marginalized lives only to expose them through mechanisms of institutional control (e.g., prisons, medical facilities, schools—as analyzed in Michel Foucault’s work). An investigation of the “novel of the institution” (Campe), especially as it appears in the works of Franz Kafka and Robert Walser, eventually explores the nexus between aesthetic representation and institutionalized forms of coerced visibility. Ultimately, the essay argues that disappearance, as an aesthetic and political event, destabilizes regimes of visibility—not by erasure alone, but by exposing the fragility of appearance itself. The tension between opacity and exposure suggests that resistance lies not in pure absence but in subverting the very mechanisms of representation. Full article
