This study presents a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Dissomphalus Ashmead (Hymenoptera, Bethylidae) in the southwestern Pacific, focusing on specimens from Fiji and the Solomon Islands. Dissomphalus is the most species-rich genus within Bethylidae, with a global distribution, yet it remains poorly documented in the Oceanian region. We examined 151 male specimens collected in these islands. As a result, we describe 27 new species, 25 from Fiji and 2 from the Solomon Islands. Diagnostic morphological features, detailed illustrations, and an identification key for all species are provided. These findings substantially expand the known diversity of Dissomphalus in Oceania. Our results underscore the importance of taxonomic research in underexplored regions and highlight the potential for high levels of species endemism in island ecosystems. This revision contributes to a better understanding of the genus’ biogeographical distribution and provides essential tools for future biodiversity assessments and conservation efforts in the southwestern Pacific. Cassava is the sixth most important food crop and is cultivated in more than 100 countries. The crop tolerates low soil fertility and drought, enabling it to play a role in climate adaptation strategies. Cassava generally requires careful preparation to remove toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) before its consumption, but HCN concentrations can vary considerably between varieties. Climate change and low inputs, particularly carbon and nutrients, affect agriculture in Pacific Island countries where cassava is commonly grown alongside traditional crops (e.g., taro). Despite increasing popularity in this region, there is limited experimental data about cassava crop management for different local varieties, their relative toxicity and nutritional value for human consumption, and their interaction with changing climate conditions. To help address this knowledge gap, three field experiments were conducted at the Koronivia Research Station of the Fiji Ministry of Agriculture. Two varieties of cassava with contrasting HCN content were planted at three different times coinciding with the start of the wet (September-October) or dry (April) seasons. A time series of measurements was conducted during the full 18-month or differing 6-month durations of each crop, based on destructive harvests and phenological observations. The former included determination of total biomass, HCN potential, carbon isotopes (δ13C), and elemental composition. Yield and nutritional value were significantly affected by variety and time of planting, and there were interactions between the two factors. Findings from this work will improve cassava management locally and will provide a valuable dataset for agronomic and biophysical model testing. Full article

With the increasing adoption of technologies such as mobile banking and blockchain, the banking sector in developing and emerging economies is experiencing both opportunities and challenges. This study examines the impact of FinTech on bank risk-taking and profitability in the small island economy of Fiji, spanning the period from 2000 to 2024. We employ a fixed-effects model and conduct robustness checks using random effects, pooled ordinary least squares (OLS), and the generalized method of moments (GMM) method, focusing on seven banks (five commercial banks and two non-bank financial institutions). Our analysis evaluates the effect of FinTech while controlling for other bank-specific factors that may influence risk-taking and profitability. The results indicate that FinTech development significantly reduces bank risk-taking and enhances profitability, suggesting a positive and substantial impact on financial performance and stability. The findings highlight the need for banks operating in Fiji and similar small economies to continue and expand their investments in FinTech innovations. Furthermore, the study suggests that regulatory bodies and policymakers should strengthen institutional and regulatory frameworks to support and guide FinTech’s evolution within the banking sector. Food security remains one of the most critical global challenges of the 21st century. Traditional tree crops domesticated by indigenous people have the potential to increase food security and improve the livelihoods of smallholders in developing countries. However, the nut characteristics of many traditional tree crop species in the tropics are poorly understood. In particular, physical and chemical characteristics are important to explore when selecting trees to commercialise. Three species, Barringtonia procera, B. edulis, and B. nova-hiberniae, have a long history of traditional use and domestication in Pacific Island countries. The aim of this study was to explore the physical and chemical characteristics of Barringtonia spp. in three Pacific countries: Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Fiji. There were significant differences in kernel weight, oil concentration, and fatty acid concentration among the countries. The kernel weight was significantly higher in Solomon Islands compared with those in Vanuatu and Fiji (9.65 g, 7.61 g, and 5.64 g, respectively). Average kernel weight in Fiji was well above 3 g, which indicated that processing could be commercially viable. The total oil concentration was significantly higher in Vanuatu and Solomon Islands than Fiji, with average concentrations of 38.96% in Solomon Islands, 47.11% in Vanuatu, and 26.20% in Fiji. Barringtonia spp. exhibited high concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids, similar to other tropical nuts, which suggests that it may be a potential healthy oil for human consumption. Notably, kernel size, oil concentration, and fatty acid composition varied geographically, potentially due to climatic differences and historical seed transfer. Our study demonstrated the potential of Barringtonia to be commercialised to enhance food and nutrition security and provide a guide for cultivar selection. Full article

This scoping review examines the state of academic knowledge around gender and its role in Indigenous/traditional knowledge for food sustainability in Tonga, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Fiji. The different roles played by all genders—men, women and non-binary—in the Pacific Islands can contribute to climate adaptation and knowledge preservation for sustainable food production. The gender lens is especially relevant given the fact that women’s knowledge has, in recent years, been disregarded and marginalised as a consequence of colonial influences and increasing reliance on imported foods. We analysed 14 studies published in English between 2015 and 2024—six from refereed journal articles and eight from grey literature. Three themes emerged linking agriculture, gender and traditional knowledge, as follows: (1) there is a gendered division of labour and culturally defined roles between women and men, although the roles played by non-binary groups remain unclear; (2) intergenerational traditional knowledge transmission has declined; (3) climate change adaptation could be reinforced through passing on traditional knowledge. The findings demonstrate that gendered knowledge is distinct and complementary, and this knowledge should be integrated into Pacific agricultural production to achieve resilient and sustainable farming in the face of climate change. Indigenous forest foods have great potential to diversify cropping systems and increase food security and the resilience of food systems to climate change. Underutilised indigenous tree nuts in particular can provide health benefits to local communities and improve livelihoods when commercialised. However, for many tree nut species, there is little knowledge of important kernel characteristics. Kernel size and oil composition are important factors for commercialisation and health benefits, respectively. We assessed kernel attributes of Terminalia catappa L. (Combretaceae), a traditional forest food in the Pacific, in the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji. We assessed kernel mass and kernel-to-fruit mass ratio, explored the fatty acid profile of oil, and oil stability against oxidation using accelerated ageing at 45 °C for 21 days. The largest kernels were found in the Solomon Islands with an average mass of 1.66 g. Similarly, kernel-to-fruit mass ratios were higher in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu than in Fiji. Terminalia catappa contained higher concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids than saturated fatty acids. Among the unsaturated fatty acids, oleic acid and linoleic acid were the two most abundant. Kernels incubated at 45 °C exhibited significantly higher hexanal concentrations on day 7 compared to those on day 0 of incubation. This rapid oil oxidation may be associated with high unsaturated fatty acid concentrations in kernels. These findings may have implications for oil shelf life. Our study suggests T. catappa trees from the Solomon Islands exhibit desirable kernel characteristics that make them suitable for selection and commercialization. The commercialization of an underutilised forest food tree like T. catappa will enhance food and nutrition security for local communities. Full article

The kava beverage of the Pacific is known for its intoxicating, soothing and relaxing effects, attributed to a group of compounds (called kavalactones) produced by the kava plant. An unfavorable kavalactone profile, however, contributes to side effects, including hepatotoxicity. Therefore, the chemical quality of kava is of key importance for consumer safety. This work investigated the chemical quality of the kava cultivated on the Taveuni, Qamea, and Rabi Islands by quantifying the main kavalactones in the roots and rhizomes of eighty-eight kava plants using the HPLC method. It was concluded that the farmers in these regions almost exclusively grow classified noble kava cultivars with a favorable kavalactone profile; the total kavalactone concentration varies between 7.2–14.1 wt.% and 4.7–8.2 wt.% in the dried roots and rhizomes, respectively. Kavain is the major kavalactone component (27–34 wt.% of the total amount of kavalactones), followed by methysticin, yangonin, or dihydrokavain in the roots, and dihydrokavain or methysticin in the rhizomes, respectively. One unclassified non-noble cultivar, with elevated levels of non-desirable dihydrokavain, dihydromethysticin, and flavokavains, is also identified and characterized. Full article

People, communities, and economies in small island developing states are extremely vulnerable to climate change, disasters, and other crises. Renewable energy can play an important part in building the resilience of these communities. Three case studies were conducted in Fiji (i.e., a grid-connected secondary school with roof-top solar PV and biogas, an off-grid community with solar home systems, and a farm that uses solar PV for irrigation) to demonstrate how renewable energy initiatives build community resilience. This study used the community resilience framework, RETScreen tool, information gathered from key informants’ interviews, and secondary data sources to conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses. It found that seven community assets, i.e., human, social, cultural, financial, natural, built, and political assets, are enhanced, leading to an increase in absorptive, adaptive, and transformative capacities for these communities. Furthermore, current research shows that human capital is one of the key instruments in the adoption of new innovative technologies. The results from this study can be used by decisionmakers to promote and implement similar technologies in communities, which not only provide clean electricity and clean cooking energy for climate change mitigation but also build community resilience. The Indo-West Pacific scombrid genus Rastrelliger Jordan & Starks is reviewed. Formerly, the genus was considered to contain three valid species, viz., R. brachysoma (Bleeker, 1851) known from the south-east coast of India to Samoa Islands; R. faughni Matsui, 1967 reported from the south-east coast of India to Fiji; and R. kanagurta (Cuvier, 1816), the most widespread species known from the east coast of Africa and the Persian/Arabian Gulf east to Tonga. Herein, R. chrysozonus (Rüppell, 1836), restricted to the Red Sea, is resurrected from the synonymy with R. kanagurta and both species are redescribed in detail, based on an integrative morphological and molecular assessment. Consequently, Scomber microlepidotus Rüppell, 1836 is moved from the synonymy with R. kanagurta to synonymy with R. chrysozonus. Rastrelliger chrysozonus differs from R. kanagurta primarily by a longer upper jaw. Rastrelliger brachysoma differs from the other three species by a deeper body, a deeper caudal peduncle, and a very long intestine. Rastrelliger faughni differs from the other three species in having a more slender body, usually X spines in the first dorsal fin (versus IX spines), shorter and fewer gill rakers, a shorter maxilla, and a shorter intestine. The phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial genes of all Rastrelliger species also demonstrated that R. chrysozonus forms a well divergent evolutionary lineage, with R. kanagurta being its closest relative. In addition to the redescriptions of R. chrysozonus and R. kanagurta, brief species accounts for R. brachysoma and R. faughni and the key to the four species are provided. Full article

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are natural hazards causing extensive damage to society, infrastructure, and the natural environment. Due to the multi-hazardous nature of TCs, comprehensive risk assessments are essential to understanding how to better prepare for potential impacts. This study develops an integrated methodology for TC multi-hazard risk assessment that utilises the following individual assessments of key TC risk components: a variable enhanced bathtub model (VeBTM) for storm surge-driven hazards, a random forest (RF) machine learning model for rainfall-induced flooding, and indicator-based indices for exposure and vulnerability assessments. To evaluate the methodology, the regions affected by TC Debbie (2017) for Queensland and TC Winston (2016) for Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu were used as proof-of-concept case studies. The results showed that areas with the highest risk of TC impacts were close to waterbodies, such as at the coastline and along riverine areas. For the Queensland study region, coastal populated areas showed levels of “high”, “very high”, and “extreme” risk, specifically in Bowen and East Mackay, driven by the social and infrastructural domains of TC risk components. For Viti Levu, areas classified with an “extreme” risk to TCs are primarily areas that experienced coastal inundation, with Lautoka and Vuda found to be especially at risk to TCs. Additionally, the Fiji case study was validated using post-disaster damage data, and a statistically significant correlation of 0.40 between TC Winston-attributed damage and each tikina’s overall risk was identified. Ultimately, this study serves as a prospective framework for assessing TC risk, capable of producing results that can assist decision-makers in developing targeted TC risk management and resilience strategies for disaster risk reduction. Objectives: This study aimed to assess salt and sugar-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours (KAB) of adults in the Central Division of Fiji. Methods: A randomised stratified sample of 700 adults were selected. Questions on salt and sugar-related KABs were developed. The survey took place from March to June 2022. For analyses, population and sample weights were applied, and differences between predefined subgroups (sex, age, ethnicity and area) were compared using weighted chi-square tests. Results: 534 adults participated (response rate 76%). Over 80% of participants (82% (95% CI 78.5 to 84.9%)) identified that consuming too much salt or salty sauce can lead to hypertension. More than 90% recognised that consuming too much sugar can lead to diabetes (92.3% (89.7 to 94.3%)). Approximately 80% of participants thought it was somewhat or very important to lower salt and sugar intake in their diet (79.8% (76.1 to 83.0) and 84.2% (80.8 to 87.1%), respectively). However, almost 40% reported adding salt or salty sauces when cooking (37.3% (32.7 to 42.2%)) and 65% (60.6 to 68.5%) adding sugar to drinks daily. Conclusions: Despite having positive knowledge and attitudes, many people reported behaviours likely to contribute to excess salt and sugar intake, highlighting the need for interventions that support behaviour change and the creation of healthier food environments. In this study, we apply a novel approach of portfolio diversification—the robust maximum diversified (RMD)—to a small and developing economy’s stock market. Using monthly returns data from August 2019 to May 2024 of 18/19 stocks listed on Fiji’s South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPX), we construct the RMD portfolio and simulate with additional constraints. To implement the RMD portfolio, we replace the covariance matrix with a matrix comprising unexplained variations. The RMD procedure diversifies weights, and not risks, hence we need to run a pairwise regression between two assets (stocks) and extract the R-square to create a P-matrix. We compute each asset’s beta using the market-weighted price index, and the CAPM to calculate market-adjusted returns. Next, together with other benchmark portfolios (1/N, minimum variance, market portfolio, semi-variance, maximum skewness, and the most diversified portfolio), we examine the expected returns against the risk-free (RF) rate. From the simulations, in terms of expected return, we note that eight portfolios perform up to the RF rate. Specifically, for returns between 4 and 5%, we find that max. RMD with positive Sharpe and Sortino (as constraints) and the most diversified portfolio offer comparable returns, although the latter has slightly lower standard deviation and downside volatility and contains 94% of all the stocks. Portfolios with returns between 5% and the RF rate are the minimum-variance, the semi-variance, and the max. RMD with positive Sharpe; the latter coincides with the RF rate and contains the most (94%) stocks compared to the other two. An investor with a diversification objective, some risk tolerance and return preference up to the RF rate can consider the max. RMD with positive Sharpe. However, depending on the level of risk-averseness, the minimum-variance or the semi-variance portfolio can be considered, with the latter having lower downside volatility. Two portfolios offer returns above the RF rate—the market portfolio (max. Sharpe) and the maximum Sortino. Although the latter has the highest return, this portfolio is the least diversified and has the largest standard deviation and downside volatility. To achieve diversification and returns above the RF rate, the market portfolio should be considered. Full article

Determinants of Bank Profitability—Do Institutions, Globalization, and Global Uncertainty Matter for Banks in Island Economies? The Case of Fiji

The objective of this study is to examine the influences of institutions, globalization, and world uncertainty on bank profitability in small developing economies. Consequently, we emphasize the significance of both bank-specific and other external factors influencing bank profitability. The empirical estimation is based on seven banks in Fiji—a small island economy—over the period 2000–2021. Together with bank-specific and macro factors, we account for institutions, globalization, and world uncertainty in analyzing the determinants of bank profitability. The study uses the fixed-effect estimation method. From the results, we observe that bank-specific variables, like the net interest margin, non-interest income, bank size, and capital adequacy ratio, are positively associated with bank profitability. Non-performing loans and credit risk are negatively associated with bank profitability. Macro variables, such as real GDP growth and remittances, have positive effects on bank profitability. Institutional factors, such as government effectiveness and voice and accountability, are positively associated with bank profitability. Regarding globalization, we find that it supports bank profitability. Global uncertainty and the Global Financial Crisis (2007–2008) are positively associated with profitability, whereas the global pandemic (COVID-19) is negatively associated. This study underscores the need to analyze the bank performance with factors beyond those reported in financial statements to derive a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the complex nature of banking operations. School Electricity Consumption in a Small Island Country: The Case of Fiji

Electricity consumption in buildings is one of the major causes of energy usage and knowledge of this can help building owners and users increase energy efficiency and conservation efforts. For Pacific Island countries, building electricity demand data is not readily accessible or available for constructing models to predict electricity demand. This paper starts to fill this gap by studying the case of schools in Fiji. The aim of the paper is to assess the factors affecting electricity demand for grid-connected Fijian schools and use this assessment to build mathematical models (multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN)) to predict electricity consumption. The average grid-connected electricity demand in kWh/year was 1411 for early childhood education schools, 5403 for primary schools, and 23,895 for secondary schools. For predicting electricity demand (ED) for all grid-connected schools, the stepwise MLR model shows that taking logarithm transformations on both the dependent variable and independent variables (number of students, lights, and air conditioning systems) yields statistically significant independent variables with an R2 value of 73.3% and RMSE of 0.2248. To improve the predicting performance, ANN models were constructed on both the natural form of variables and transformed variables. The optimum ANN model had an R2 value of 95.3% and an RMSE of 59.4 kWh/year. The findings of this study can assist schools in putting measures in place to reduce their electricity demand, associated costs, and carbon footprint, as well as help government ministries make better-informed policies. A geophysical method, electrical resistivity tomography, was applied to identify potential groundwater-bearing zones around Nubutautau village on Viti Levu island, Fiji. Apparent resistivity data of the subsurface were collected through an electrode assembly along survey lines by injecting current into the subsurface using an ABEM Terrameter LS2. The apparent resistivity data were inverted using Res2DINVx64 software to produce the final electrical resistivity through an iterative process to compare the resistivity of layers and draw analogical hydrogeological results. Analysis revealed the presence of two potential groundwater-bearing zones as potential targets for future drilling. The two targets indicated the presence of potentially saturated vertical fractures through which infiltrating rainwater percolates through the volcanic rock towards a deeper basal aquifer. The identification of the two potential targets demonstrated great potential of this geophysical technique to effectively inform drilling operations. A scientific approach can increase the successful delivery of water security interventions in remote, drought-prone communities of the Pacific. Full article
