Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is a major insect pest of commercial fruit and a quarantine priority in the European Union (EU). This tephritid species was previously recorded in Austria, France, and Italy, with more recent detections in Greece. In 2023 and 2024, B. dorsalis adult males were captured by the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) using traps placed in community gardens and produce markets in Belgium. Morphological identification confirmed the specimens as B. dorsalis. Genomes of trapped adults were sequenced, as well as a historical set of B. dorsalis larvae intercepted by FASFC from imported fruit. A nuclear single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis revealed that three Belgian B. dorsalis adults originated from Africa, while eight others were of Asian origin. In contrast, almost all FASFC intercepted larvae had an African origin. A discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC) of the “Folmer” region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene largely confirmed the SNP analysis but also indicated that, in a few cases, mitonuclear discordance may confound origin tracing. To enable geographic origin tracing in a laboratory setting, a diagnostic set of nuclear SNPs was developed. The DAPC was also implemented in a streamlined R-script, allowing origin assignment using a mitochondrial COI barcode. To conclude, our study reveals independent occurrences of B. dorsalis in Belgium and provides important tools for origin tracing of this quarantine pest. Full article

Coastality, the degree to which a place or community is functionally, spatially, or symbolically oriented toward the ocean, has received limited attention in Ocean Literacy research. This study introduces perceived coastality as a youth-centered construct and develops the Coastality Gap Index (CGI), a spatial indicator measuring the divergence between students’ coastal-inland identity and their actual geographic proximity to the sea. A mixed-methods design was applied to data from 645 students aged 10–17 across 11 schools in five municipalities in Mallorca (Spain). The questionnaire explored emotional, cognitive, and experiential connections to the ocean, while K-means clustering identified perceptual profiles and GIS analysis examined their spatial distribution. Five distinct profiles emerged, ranging from students who perceive themselves as coastal with strong ocean ties, to others who live near the coast yet exhibit limited awareness or connection. The CGI revealed that 14 of 29 population centers studied were inland-oriented despite coastal proximity, with values ranging from −0.07 to +0.72. Notable disconnects occurred in municipalities like Manacor (CGI = 0.41) and Artà (CGI = 0.34), where majority of students identified as “inland” despite living within 13 km of the coast, well within the EU’s 20 km coastal belt definition. The perceptual typology and spatial indicator provide a transferable framework for rethinking blue education strategies and designing context-sensitive Ocean Literacy interventions that account for symbolic as well as geographic dimensions of marine identity. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the technological, environmental, economic, regulatory, and social dimensions shaping the development and operation of agricultural biogas plants. The paper adopts a primarily European perspective, reflecting the comparatively high share of agricultural inputs in anaerobic digestion (AD) across EU Member States, while drawing selective comparisons with global contexts to indicate where socio-geographical conditions may lead to different outcomes. It outlines core principles of the AD process and recent innovations—such as enzyme supplementation, microbial carriers, and multistage digestion systems—that enhance process efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The study emphasises substrate optimisation involving both crop- and livestock-derived materials, together with the critical management of water resources and digestate within a circular-economy framework to promote sustainability and minimise environmental risks. Economic viability, regulatory frameworks, and social dynamics are examined as key factors underpinning successful biogas implementation. The paper synthesises evidence on cost–benefit performance, investment drivers, regulatory challenges, and support mechanisms, alongside the importance of community engagement and participatory governance to mitigate land-use conflicts and ensure equitable rural development. Finally, it addresses persistent technical, institutional, environmental, and social barriers that constrain biogas deployment, underscoring the need for integrated solutions that combine technological advances with policy support and stakeholder cooperation. This analysis offers practical insights for advancing sustainable biogas use in agriculture, balancing energy production with environmental stewardship, food security, and rural equity. The review is based on literature identified in Scopus and Web of Science for 2007 to 2025 using predefined keyword sets and supplemented by EU policy and guidance documents and backward- and forward-citation searches. Non-food geographical indications (GIs) are emerging as strategic policy instruments in the European Union after Regulation (EU) 2023/2411 extended protection to craft and industrial products. While the literature on agri-food GIs is extensive, empirical and comparative evidence on non-food GIs remains scarce and fragmented. This study addresses this gap by constructing a harmonised dataset, combining 132 registered and 380 potential non-food GIs identified by EUIPO (512 in total across the EU). Using secondary institutional data, descriptive and comparative statistics, and a hierarchical clustering (Ward, squared Euclidean distance) on normalised indicators total GIs, GIs per million inhabitants (GI/POP), and GIs per € billion of GDP (GI/GDP), the analysis identifies three country typologies differing by scale and intensity. Results reveal a strong geographical concentration in Southern Europe but also unexpectedly high intensity in smaller or mid-sized economies such as Portugal, Cyprus, and Slovenia. A forward-looking scenario analysis based on Cost of Non-Europe (CoNE) estimates suggests that the full implementation of the new Regulation could generate 284,000–338,000 new jobs and € 37–50 billion in additional intra-EU trade. The study contributes to EU policy debates by introducing comparative indicators (GI/POP, GI/GDP) as monitoring tools for evidence-based policymaking and by highlighting the role of non-food GIs as hybrid institutions connecting industrial competitiveness, cultural identity, and sustainability transitions. This study evaluates the impact of different territorial contexts on academic mobility within the framework of the Erasmus Programme, using data on Key Action 1 exchanges between 2015 and 2023. Using official EU datasets and a gravity model framework, the research investigates how economic performance, geographical distance, EU membership, AUF (Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie) regional affiliation, and state contiguity shape international academic flows. The research developed two gravity models: one aimed to measure the potential barriers to academic flows through a residuals analysis, and the second integrated territorial delineations as predictors. In both models, the core of the explanatory variable is formed by indicators describing the economic performance of states and the distance between countries. When applied, the models converge in emphasizing that the inclusion of states in different territorial configurations has a strong effect on the structuring of academic flows. This suggests that the Erasmus Programme exhibits trends of overconcentration of flows in a limited number of countries, questioning the need for a more polycentric strategy and a reshaping of the funding mechanisms. Even if the gravity models behave well, given the limited number of predictors, further studies may need to incorporate qualitative indicators for a more comprehensive evaluation of the interactions. Coastal public spaces in large Euro-Mediterranean cities represent critical zones of negotiation between land and sea, where ecological fragilities, infrastructural pressures and social demands intersect. Grounded in the concept of the urban amphibious, this study explores the spatial-functional complexity of city-sea interfaces through the development of CITI4SEA (City-Sea Interface Typological Indicators for Spatial-Ecological Assessment), an original multidimensional framework for the evaluation of coastal public spaces. The methodology builds on a geo-database of 149 coastal municipalities in eight EU Member States and applies a set of indicators to seven major cities (with populations over 500,000 and comprehensive port infrastructure). Through a structured evaluation grid applied to 23 coastal public spaces, the framework enables a cross-comparative analysis of spatial configurations, ecological qualities, and patterns of public use. Results reveal the emergence of transnational clusters based on shared planning logics and degrees of socio-environmental integration, rather than geographic proximity. The study also identifies asymmetries in accessibility, environmental performance and equipment provision. Beyond mapping spatial disparities, the contribution offers a replicable tool for assessing littoral transformations within the broader framework of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP), supporting context-specific strategies for resilient and inclusive coastal governance. This review explores the application of chemometric techniques for the authentication, characterization, and adulteration detection of Cypriot agri-food products registered under European Union quality schemes, including Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). Given the increasing global demand for premium and geographically linked food products, ensuring their authenticity and integrity has become critical. Although Halloumi cheese, wines, and Zivania are the most researched Cypriot products, additional studies are still needed. Chemometrics, when coupled with spectroscopy, offers robust analytical tools for distinguishing genuine products from their imitations by characterizing them. This review provides an overview of certified Cypriot products and focuses on published applications where chemometric approaches have been used to assess product origin, composition, and adulteration. The paper concludes with current challenges, methodological limitations, and future directions for expanding the role of chemometrics in food integrity verification within the context of EU geographical indications. The ‘Annurca’ apple, an EU Protected Geographical Indication product, undergoes a mandatory post-harvest reddening in the ‘melaio’. This traditional practice enhances color and aroma but initiates detrimental textural degradation, creating a paradox where key quality attributes develop in conflict. This study aimed to characterize the sensory evolution of ‘Annurca’ apples during extended cold storage and its impact on consumer preference. A cohort of 551 untrained consumers evaluated the sensory profile at seven time points over a 221-day cold storage period. Multivariate data analyses were employed to identify preference drivers and define consumer segments. Consumer overall liking and market acceptability followed a significant non-linear, U-shaped trajectory, declining from an initial high (89.4% acceptability) to a minimum at day 159 (46.6% acceptability), before partially recovering. This trend inversely correlated with a peak in perceived mealiness, while hardness and crunchiness remained stable. Juiciness and aroma intensity were consistently identified as powerful positive liking drivers, whereas mealiness was the most significant and consistent negative driver. Sweetness’s importance as a preference driver significantly increased over storage time. Cluster analysis on highly rated samples revealed three distinct consumer preference profiles, challenging the traditional notion of a single ideal ‘Annurca’ apple. This study deconstructs the ‘melaio’ paradox, demonstrating that sensory evolution is a dynamic process defined by a trade-off between flavor development and textural decay. The findings provide a data-driven framework for optimizing the commercial strategy for this unique PGI cultivar, suggesting the need to mitigate mealiness and develop targeted marketing strategies for distinct consumer segments. Background/Objectives: Forced degradation studies are critical for identifying potential degradation pathways of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), particularly under thermal stress. Due to their structural complexity and sensitivity to elevated temperatures, mAbs are prone to fragmentation, aggregation, and post-translational modifications. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the degradation profiles of biosimilar anti-VEGF mAb and its originator counterparts sourced from both the United States (U.S.) and the European Union (EU) under thermal stress conditions. To our knowledge, this represents one of the few studies conducting a direct head-to-head comparability assessment across biosimilar and two geographically sourced originators, integrating orthogonal analytical approaches. Methods: Biosimilar candidate and originator products (U.S. and EU) were incubated at 37 °C and 50 °C for 3, 7, and 14 days. Fragmentation profiles were assessed using validated non-reduced and reduced capillary electrophoresis–sodium dodecyl sulfate (CE-SDS) methods. Additionally, size-exclusion ultra-performance liquid chromatography (SE-UPLC) and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assays were performed on samples stressed for 14 days to provide deeper insights into degradation pathways. Results: Non-reduced CE-SDS analysis indicated a time- and temperature-dependent increase in low-molecular-weight fragments and a corresponding decrease in the intact form, with more pronounced effects observed at 50 °C. Reduced CE-SDS revealed a more rapid increase in total impurity levels at 50 °C, accompanied by a decrease in total light and heavy chain content. SE-UPLC showed enhanced aggregation under thermal stress, more pronounced at 50 °C. LC-MS/MS analysis identified increased asparagine deamidation in the PENNY peptide and pyroglutamic acid formation (pE) at the N-terminus of the heavy chain. Conclusions: The degradation profiles of the biosimilar and originator mAbs were highly comparable under thermal stress, with no significant qualitative differences detected. By applying a multi-tiered analytical characterization technique, this study provides a comprehensive comparability assessment that underscores the robustness of biosimilarity even under forced degradation conditions. Cheese production is an ancient practice that is associated with the food and cultural identity of different peoples. There are over 500 cheese types globally, including 207 with protected denomination of origin (PDO) and 70 with protected geographical indication (PGI) status in the European Union (EU). Each cheese has various biochemical compositions, production methods, and maturation environments. This study has provided a critical review of the environmental impacts of cheese production, focusing on energy consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and the integration of renewable energy sources as sustainable strategies for this sector. Based on case studies and life cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies, the analysis revealed significant variability in energy use (3.0 to 70.2 MJ/kg) and GHG emissions (up to 22.13 kg CO2 eq/kg), influenced by factors such as the cheese type, production complexity, system boundaries, and the technological or geographical context. Particular attention was given to heat treatment, refrigeration, and maturation processes, which contribute substantially to the overall energy footprint. The paper also discusses the methodological challenges in LCA studies, including the role of co-product allocation and database limitations. Finally, strategic renewable energy options, such as biogas recovery and solar thermal integration, are discussed as sustainable alternatives to reduce the environmental footprint of the dairy sector and support its sustainability. Effective monitoring and evaluation (M&E) are essential for ensuring that Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) contributes to the sustainable development of the blue economy while maintaining alignment with institutional frameworks. The study presented in this paper develops a stakeholder-driven M&E framework for sustainable MSP, emphasizing a participatory methodology to enhance the relevance and applicability of performance assessment. Using a structured mutual learning approach, the research engaged stakeholders in two iterative rounds: the first identified key strategic objectives for a sustainable blue economy through dialogue and a complementary questionnaire survey, while the second refined these into corresponding specific objectives. This process was applied in the context of a case study in Greece, where MSP implementation is shaped by national and EU regulatory frameworks and the socio-economic dynamics of the coastal and maritime sectors. The case study provided a practical testing ground for the proposed methodology, involving stakeholders from government, industry, and civil society to ensure a comprehensive perspective. The insights gained informed the design of a key performance indicator (KPI) framework, integrating qualitative and quantitative metrics tailored to the regional maritime governance landscape. These metrics were selected based on the SMARTIE (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound, Inclusive, Equitable) criteria and were clearly aligned with the established objectives. The frequency of measurements, appropriate data collection methods, and indicative data sources were also defined to provide a complete KPIs framework. This stakeholder-driven methodology strengthens the adaptive capacity of MSP by ensuring continuous assessment and revision aligned with sustainability objectives and facilitating ex ante, intermediate, and ex post evaluations. The proposed framework is scalable and transferable, offering a systematic approach to improving policy coherence and decision-making across different geographic, administrative, and sectoral contexts, enabling sustainable governance and maritime governance. This paper investigates the dynamics of energy poverty across EU Member States from 2015 to 2023, a period characterized by economic recovery, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a significant energy crisis. Utilizing Eurostat EU-SILC data, the study analyzes trends in four key indicators: the inability to keep homes adequately warm, arrears on utility bills, housing cost overburden rate, and the at-risk-of-poverty rate. Data processing and trend analysis were performed using R and RStudio, while a k-means cluster analysis, executed in Python via Visual Studio Code, identified and compared distinct country groupings based on their energy poverty profiles in 2015 and 2023. The findings reveal a general improvement in energy poverty indicators across the EU until 2019, followed by a marked deterioration, particularly in energy affordability metrics post-2021 due to the energy crisis. This impact was observed to be distinct from general income poverty trends. While significant geographical disparities persist, with Southern and Eastern European countries often more vulnerable, the analysis also points to notable improvements in several Central and Eastern European nations. The cluster analysis, which identified eight clusters in 2015 and seven in 2023, suggests a degree of partial convergence. Key shifts include Poland’s transition to a lower-risk cluster and Spain’s move to a higher-risk group, while Southern Europe generally remains highly susceptible. Pakistan, a country with a rich cultural heritage and diverse products, enacted the Geographical Indications (Registration and Protection) Act 2020 to comply with the WTO’s TRIPS Agreement, which defines GIs as signs linking products to their geographic origin based on unique qualities or reputation. This legal framework aims to protect local products, promote exports, and drive economic growth. To date, Pakistan has 10 registered and 65 notified GIs. This study critically examines Pakistan’s GI framework, highlighting gaps in legislation, enforcement, institutional capacity, and stakeholder awareness. It assesses Pakistan’s alignment with international standards (e.g., the EU model) and explores how GIs can foster sustainable rural development, cultural preservation, and economic growth. As a governance tool, GIs ensure equitable benefit-sharing, enhance market competitiveness, and promote eco-friendly traditional practices. The findings reveal that addressing policy weaknesses and strengthening institutional mechanisms could unlock the full socio-economic potential of GIs, contributing to sustainable industrialization and rural uplift. Aligning Pakistan’s GI framework with global best practices would not only protect indigenous products but also boost their international recognition, reduce poverty, and advance sustainable development goals. Many developed countries face an increasing crisis of waste management, especially regarding inadequate disposal capacities and insufficient systems for waste sorting and recovery. These insufficiencies harmfully affect environmental quality, human health, and overall urban life. Waste management is largely linked with disposal, collection, and recycling. Instead of being a critical public utility, solid waste management often goes unnoticed—until it fails. The complete system failure can escalate into a global crisis. Italy presents a critical case to evaluate waste management’s role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, given the diversity of the country and its adherence to strict EU regulations. The country has taken important steps to adopt the principles of the circular economy, mainly through recycling and waste-to-energy initiatives. The Sustainable Development Goals are also linked to waste management, and there are specific goals with targets and indicators that focus on waste management outcomes. This paper has assessed the national achievement of Italy in waste management concerning the SDGs. SDGs 6, 7, 11, and 12, with a specific focus on the targets impacted by integrated waste management in Italy, are the focus of this paper, and the achievement of waste indicators under SDGs 6, 7, 11, and 12 is analyzed. The paper also assesses the relationship between social, economic, and geographical variables in the achievement of the mentioned SDGs, and also the impacts of the social, economic, and geographical contexts of inhabitants on the achievements of the SDGs. The paper has utilized the national dataset on SDGs and available data on socio-economic and geographic variables. The paper applied descriptive statistics, Pearson’s Correlation, Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR), and Elastic Net Regression, emphasizing the relationship between the waste indicators of SDGs and social, economic, and geographical factors. The paper resulted in a significant association between the outcomes of waste management indicators of SDGs and demographic variables. Full article

Investigating how systemic risk originates and spreads across the financial system poses an inherently compositional question, i.e., a question concerning the joint distribution of relative risk share across several interdependent contributors. To address this question, we propose a weighted compositional clustering approach aimed at tackling the trajectories and turning points of systemic risk in the Eurozone, from both a chronological and a geographical perspective. The cluster profiles emerging from our analysis indicate a progressive shift from Northern Europe towards the Euro-Mediterranean region in the coordinate center of systemic risk compositions. This shift matures as the outcome of complex interactions between core and peripheral EU countries that compositional methods have the merit of capturing and unifying in a self-contained multivariate framework.
