Background: In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, nursing students and educators are navigating an increasingly complex academic environment. The rigorous demands of nursing education, combined with diminished academic preparedness and growing mental health concerns, have heightened the need for effective wellness interventions. The SKY Happiness Retreat©, an evidence-based program incorporating breathwork, meditation, and mindfulness practices, offers a potential strategy to enhance student resilience and reduce stress. Purpose: This pilot study examined the impact of integrating the SKY Happiness Retreat© into a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. This study evaluated whether participation reduced perceived stress and improved students’ ability to manage stressful situations. Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest–post-test design was used with junior-level BSN students recruited through convenience sampling at a rural university. Participants completed a structured three-day retreat focused on breathwork, meditation, and mindfulness. Outcomes were measured using the Mood and Anxiety Symptom Questionnaire (Mini-MASQ), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). Results: Perceived stress significantly decreased following the intervention (PSS: pre M = 18.50, SD = 4.583; post M = 17.30, SD = 5.841; t(43) = 2.072, p = 0.022). General distress also significantly improved (Mini-MASQ: pre M = 15.51, SD = 6.535; post M = 12.82, SD = 5.118; t(44) = 3.941, p < 0.001). No significant changes were observed in anxious arousal or anhedonic depression. BRS scores demonstrated a modest increase in resilience. Conclusions: The SKY Happiness Retreat© shows promise as an experiential learning strategy within undergraduate nursing education. Findings suggest participation was associated with reductions in perceived stress and general distress while promoting resilience. Integrating evidence-based wellness programs into prelicensure nursing curricula may better prepare students to manage academic and professional stress. Larger, longitudinal studies are needed to evaluate long-term effectiveness. Full article

Prophylactic antibiotic use in intensive aquaculture promotes antimicrobial resistance, necessitating the development of microbial-based interventions. This study evaluated the individual, complementary, and synergistic effects of Bacillus subtilis natto (BSN) and Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) on the physiological performance and intestinal microecology of juvenile Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Over a 60-day trial, juveniles (initial weight: 5.81 ± 0.03 g) received a basal diet (CON) or a diet supplemented with 107 CFU/g of BSN, LP, or both (BSN + LP). The BSN + LP consortium elicited complementary improvements in final body weight (21.39 ± 0.75 g vs. 18.66 ± 0.44 g in CON) and feed conversion efficiency (p < 0.05). Transcriptomic analysis revealed synergistic upregulation of digestive proteases (trypsin, chymotrypsin). Notably, an in pro-inflammatory markers (IL-1β, TNF-α) was counterbalanced by substantial upregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, 5.65-fold; TGF-β1, 4.48-fold), suggesting the induction of mucosal tolerance rather than pathological enteritis. High-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing showed that the control cohort had a potential baseline microbial, characterized by a high relative abundance of Proteobacteria. BSN + LP administration significantly altered this microbial community into a fermentative eubiosis enriched in Firmicutes and Bacteroidota. Correlation network analyses confirmed negative interaction dynamics: increased abundance of Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, and Muribaculaceae was negatively correlated with baseline pathobiont abundance. These findings indicate that co-administration of BSN and LP hypothetically enhances metabolic energy harvest via short-chain fatty acid-producing taxa, strengthens the gut–immune axis, and competitively mitigates opportunistic pathogens. Background: Professional identity and ethical integrity are foundational to nursing practice and are shaped in part by educational experiences. This study evaluated an online Holocaust and genocide educational seminar delivered to fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students and explored how students linked seminar content to professional identity formation, ethical vigilance, and patient advocacy. Methods: We conducted a descriptive mixed-methods educational evaluation. Students completed an anonymous pre-seminar survey (demographics, motivations for studying nursing, self-identified desirable professional qualities, and self-rated knowledge of the Holocaust and other genocides) and an anonymous post-seminar feedback survey with four open-ended questions. Quantitative items were summarized descriptively; qualitative data were analyzed using inductive qualitative content analysis. Results: Of the 205 students who attended the seminar, 133 completed the pre-seminar survey, and 110 completed the post-seminar survey. Students reported high baseline knowledge of the Holocaust but limited knowledge of the Armenian and Rwandan genocides. The five themes that emerged are as follows: (1) ethical judgment and the influence of nurses; (2) patient advocacy and social justice; (3) the effect of historical and contemporary trauma on students’ learning experience; (4) genocide awareness and prevention; and (5) approaches to education and content presentation. Conclusions: Carefully facilitated Holocaust and genocide education, delivered through interactive online pedagogy and structured debriefing, may support late-stage nursing students’ reflection on ethical integrity and professional identity during the transition to professional practice. Biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma (BSNS) is a very rare, locally aggressive sarcoma arising in the sinonasal region, initially recognized as low-grade sinonasal sarcoma with neural and myogenic differentiation. Here, we report a case of BSNS extending into the intracranial and intraorbital regions, finally diagnosed by a break-apart fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay for rearrangements of PAX3. A 50-year-old woman presented with left diplopia and exophthalmos. CT and MRI revealed a large ethmoidal mass with intracranial and intraorbital extension. Since preoperative biopsy suggested a benign tumor, endoscopic endonasal resection was performed while preserving the anterior skull base and intraorbital structures. Postoperative histopathological diagnosis indicated synovial sarcoma, and proton beam therapy with adjuvant chemotherapy was subsequently administered. After treatment, FISH demonstrated rearrangements of PAX3 and MAML3 genes, leading to a revised diagnosis of BSNS, which typically does not require chemotherapy due to its non-metastatic behavior. Eleven years after treatment, the patient remains free of recurrence. Understanding BSNS is essential to avoid excessive intervention, and confirmation of PAX3 rearrangement by FISH or equivalent molecular testing is crucial for accurate diagnosis. Full article

Endometriosis has a significant impact on the social, psychological, psychosomatic, and physical aspects of women’s lives. There is increasing evidence that endometriosis has to be seen as a systemic and complex disorder with a multifactorial etiology, accompanied by numerous other pathologies, such as mental disorders and even cancer. Herein, we analyzed Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) and Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) generated from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD 2021), which are key metrics used to measure the worldwide impact of diseases. Besides, differential gene expression data generated from the Turku Endomet Database were calculated. Briefly, log2-transformed gene expression counts were investigated using linear modeling with the function expression ~ condition to generate log2 fold changes and p-values for each gene. This enabled a precise comparative analysis of mRNA expression levels between control endometrium and various endometriosis-affected tissues, including ovarian endometrioma, peritoneal lesions, and deep endometriosis. Expression patterns of specific genes related to pain and malignant turnover within endometriosis samples and controls have been analyzed. The identification of upregulated genes like FOS, DES, SIRT1, SBDS, SRF, SPN, P2RX1, TEAD3, and SLITRK3, alongside downregulated genes such as KIF22, KIF25, GAS2L2, and HINT3, highlights a broad transcriptional reprogramming within endometriotic tissues. The clustering analysis, which reveals pain-related genes (SRP14/BMF, GDAP1, MLLT10, BSN, and NGF), further solidifies the genetic basis for the chronic and often debilitating pain experienced by patients with endometriosis. In 2021, women with endometriosis experienced the highest rates of total YLDs at 19.98%, with anxiety contributing 17.21% and major depression 8.12%, equating to mean YLDs of 15–24 years. In conclusion, our findings reinforce the need for adopting a holistic, psychosomatic approach to managing endometriosis. The identified genetic markers related to pain provide a biological basis for the profound physical suffering. At the same time, the robust DALYs and YLDs data quantify the devastating impact on mental health, particularly highlighting the significant burden of depression and anxiety. Full article

Background: As the United States population becomes increasingly diverse, the representation of minorities in health professions is critical to addressing health disparities. Few investigations have been conducted among students enrolled in the first semester of the nursing program, a vulnerable and adjustment period for most nursing majors. Thus, this study examined the association between reading comprehension and science aptitude on student retention and standardized test scores. Method: A cross-sectional repeated measures study was conducted to investigate the outcomes from a compendium of programmatic interventions implemented among n = 80 nursing students enrolled in the first semester of a pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing program in one Hispanic-serving institution. These interventions included the Weaver™ reading online program, case studies, NCLEX-type practice tests, test-taking skills, and peer-mentoring. Data collection was conducted in Spring 2024. Multivariate statistical analysis was used to determine predictors associated with student retention and standardized test scores. An independent t-test was used to examine any significant difference in the reading comprehension level among the cohort’s participants. A qualitative investigation using thematic analysis was conducted to understand students’ experiences with the programmatic interventions. Results: Students’ baseline reding comprehension level was significantly associated with failure in the first semester of the nursing program (β = −0.815; SE = 0.349; Wald = 5.444; p < 0.05). End-of-term reading comprehension level was significantly associated with end-of-course HESI score in the Foundations in Nursing course (β = 26.768; SE = 10.049; Beta = 0.445; p < 0.05) while science GPA was significantly associated with end-of-course HESI score for Health Assessment (β = 3.022; SE = 1.315; Beta = 0.434; p < 0.05. Cohort retention was 75%. The independent t-test result indicated a significant difference in reading level was found between those who dropped out from the cohort (M = 4.23, SE = 0.173 and those who did not (M = 5.15, SE = 0.188), t (68) = −3.037, p < 0.01. A reading level of grade 10 and above was associated with student progression to the next semester (M = 10.16, SE = 0.375, t (70) = −0.560, p < 0.05. Although the participants found the reading comprehension modules tedious, test-taking strategies, applying the nursing process in case studies, and the expertise of a nurse educator, who understood the learning needs of first-semester students, were perceived as critical to academic success. Conclusions: Reading comprehension and science aptitude are essential to students’ early success in the nursing program. Addressing gaps in reading comprehension and science aptitude before admission to a nursing program would increase chances of success in the early stages of a nursing major. Full article

Obesity is an epidemic that currently impacts many nations. The persistence of this disease is shaped by both genetic and epigenetic factors that extend beyond calorie balance. Research in the past year has revealed that epigenetic and cellular memory within adipose tissue can predispose individuals to weight regain after initial fat loss, as shown by studies indicating persistent transcriptional and chromatin changes even after fat mass reduction. Independent studies also demonstrate long-lasting metabolic shifts, such as those triggered by glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor (GIPR)-induced thermogenesis and sarcolipin (SLN) stabilization that also support a form of “metabolic memory” that is associated with sustained weight loss. At the neural level, rare variants in synaptic genes like BSN (Bassoon presynaptic cytomatrix protein), a presynaptic scaffold protein, and APBA1 (amyloid beta precursor protein binding family A member 1), a neuronal adaptor involved in vesicular trafficking, disrupt communication in feeding circuits, elevating obesity risk and illustrating how synaptic integrity influences food intake regulation. Similarly, the spatial compartmentalization of metabolic signaling within neuronal cilia is emerging as crucial, with cilia-localized receptors G protein-coupled receptor 75 (GPR75) and G protein-coupled receptor 45 (GPR45) exerting opposing effects on energy balance and satiety. Meanwhile, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have advanced through larger, more diverse cohorts and better integration of environmental and biological data. These studies have identified novel obesity-related loci and demonstrated the value of polygenic risk scores (PRS) in predicting treatment responses. For example, genetic variants in GLP-1R (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor) and GIPR (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor) may modulate the effectiveness of incretin-based therapies, while PRS for satiation can help match individuals to the most appropriate anti-obesity medications. This review focuses on studies in the last two years that highlight how advances in obesity genetics are driving a shift toward more personalized and mechanism-based treatment strategies. Pulmonary dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI is clinically useful for assessing pulmonary perfusion, but its signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is limited. A self-supervised learning network-based plug-and-play (PnP) denoising model was developed to improve the image quality of pulmonary perfusion MRI. A dataset of patients with suspected pulmonary diseases was used. Asymmetric pixel-shuffle downsampling blind-spot network (AP-BSN) training inputs were two-dimensional background-subtracted perfusion images without clean ground truth. The AP-BSN is incorporated into a PnP model (PnP-BSN) for balancing noise control and image fidelity. Model performance was evaluated by SNR, sharpness, and overall image quality from two radiologists. The fractal dimension and k-means segmentation of the pulmonary perfusion images were calculated for comparing denoising performance. The model was trained on 29 patients and tested on 8 patients. The performance of PnP-BSN was compared to denoising convolutional neural network (DnCNN) and a Gaussian filter. PnP-BSN showed the highest reader scores in terms of SNR, sharpness, and overall image quality as scored by two radiologists. The expert scoring results for DnCNN, Gaussian, and PnP-BSN were 2.25 ± 0.65, 2.44 ± 0.73, and 3.56 ± 0.73 for SNR; 2.62 ± 0.52, 2.62 ± 0.52, and 3.38 ± 0.64 for sharpness; and 2.16 ± 0.33, 2.34 ± 0.42, and 3.53 ± 0.51 for overall image quality (p < 0.05 for all). PnP-BSN outperformed DnCNN and a Gaussian filter for denoising pulmonary perfusion MRI, which led to improved quantitative fractal analysis. Full article

Light curve analysis of W UMa-type contact binary systems using MCMC or MC methods can be time-consuming, primarily because the repeated generation of synthetic light curves tends to be relatively slow during the fitting process. Although various approaches have been proposed to address this issue, their implementation is often challenging due to complexity or uncertain performance. In this study, we introduce the BSN application, whose name is taken from the BSN project. The application is designed for analyzing contact binary system light curves, supporting photometric data, and employing an MCMC algorithm for efficient parameter estimation. The BSN application generates synthetic light curves more than 40 times faster than PHOEBE during the MCMC fitting process. The BSN application enhances light curve analysis with an expanded feature set and a more intuitive interface while maintaining compliance with established scientific standards. In addition, we present the first light curve analyses of four contact binary systems based on the TESS data, utilizing the BSN application version 1.0. We also conducted a light curve analysis using the PHOEBE Python code and compared the resulting outputs. Two of the target systems exhibited asymmetries in the maxima of their light curves, which were appropriately modeled by introducing a cold starspot on one of the components. The estimated mass ratios of these total-eclipse systems place them within the category of low mass ratio contact binary stars. The estimation of the absolute parameters for the selected systems was carried out using the Pa empirical relationship. Based on the effective temperatures and masses of the components, three of the target systems were classified as A-subtype, while TIC 434222993 was identified as a W-subtype system. Full article

Cultured epidermal autografts (CEAs) serve as an alternative permanent skin replacement, though high costs often limit their use in resource-constrained settings and to life-saving cases. This case report presents the first documented cosmetic application of a modified CEA technique in a bodybuilder, demonstrating favorable aesthetic outcomes. A 28-year-old Black male with a 20% total body surface area burn sustained in a domestic fire exhibited superficial and deep partial-thickness burns to the face, arms, torso, and feet. Refusing grafts from visible donor sites, treatment using a low-cost modified CEA approach was employed to minimize donor site morbidity. Keratinocytes harvested from a groin biopsy were cultured on Cutimed Sorbact® (Essity AB, BSN Medical (Pty) Ltd., Pinetown, RSA) dressings with autogenous plasma and hydrogel supplementation and incubated at 37 °C for two weeks. Xenografts provided temporary coverage before CEA transplantation. Graft take was 85%, with minor (15%) loss at 21 days, requiring small autograft coverage. At two months, the Vancouver Scar Scale score was 4, indicating optimal pigmentation, smoother texture, and minimal scarring. These findings align with limited studies on CEAs for cosmetic applications, suggesting this cost-effective technique may broaden the scope of CEAs beyond life-saving interventions to include aesthetic reconstruction, reducing both donor site morbidity and scarring. This study compares the effects of adding Mo, Cu, and Sn elements on the decolorization performance of Fe77Si13B9M1 (M = Mo, Cu, or Sn) amorphous alloys. After the addition of Cu and Sn elements, the Fe-Si-B amorphous alloys generate three-dimensional (3D) petal-like nanostructured corrosion products during the decolorization process. These petal-like nanostructures possess a high specific surface area and excellent adsorption capacity, thereby effectively promoting the decolorization of dyes. Furthermore, the influence of Fe content variation on the decolorization performance of Fe77+xSi13−xB9Cu1 (x = 0, 2, or 4) and Fe77+xSi13−xB9Sn1 (x = 0, 2, or 4) alloys was investigated. The glass-forming ability of Fe77+xSi13−xB9Cu1 alloys decreases with increasing Fe content, leading to the precipitation of α-Fe crystalline phases starting from Fe79Si11B9Cu1. As the crystallinity increases, the decolorization performance of the alloys gradually deteriorates. In contrast, the Fe77+xSi13−xB9Sn1 alloys maintain their amorphous structure even with increasing Fe content, and their decolorization performance for Orange II improves accordingly. The high decolorization efficiency of FeSiBSn amorphous alloys for Orange II can be attributed to their unique self-refreshing properties. Full article

Background/Objectives: Prior studies have shown that most students seeking entry into a nursing program (also known as pre-nursing students) do not make it into the nursing profession, mostly due to failing one or more science courses in their first year of college. These students give up on nursing, dropping out of college or changing to a less challenging major. Objectives: We aimed to determine the effect of a living learning community (LLC) on the retention and success of students seeking entry into a Baccalaureate Science Nursing (BSN) program. Methods: The aim of this descriptive, prospective cohort project was to improve student retention and success by creating a living–learning community (LLC) for first-year students preparing to apply to a BSN program. The effectiveness of this intervention was determined by comparing retention and success for those in the LLC with those who were not in the LLC over a period of 4 years. Results: Fewer students in the LLC dropped out of or failed college (21% vs. 33%), fewer changed majors (24% vs. 27%), and more were ultimately admitted to the BSN program (42% vs. 36%) during their 3rd year of college. Of those not admitted within the study’s timeframe, there were more students still preparing to apply to a BSN program than those not in the LLC (13% vs. 3%). Regarding minority outcomes, fewer LLC underrepresented minority (URM) students dropped out of college or failed (29% vs. 43%), but more of them changed majors and remained in college, working towards a college degree in another field of study (43% vs. 29%). There was no apparent effect of participation in the LLC program on minority student nursing program admission success. An equal percentage (29%) of minority students from the LLC group and the non-LLC group were admitted to the BSN program during this study. Conclusions: The limitations affecting this study include the prohibition of large face-to-face gatherings during the initial part of this study and the lingering effects of the pandemic and infection control efforts on student learning outcomes. As reported in prior research, first-year nursing students have a high risk of failing or dropping out of college. However, the students who were able to participate in the LLC demonstrated better student outcomes than those who did not, resulting in more students who were able to move towards their goal of becoming a nurse. Building information modeling (BIM) is increasingly used during the conceptual design phase, which focuses on simulations such as energy usage analysis and comfort levels, like temperature and lighting conditions, to enhance user experience and well-being, which are key factors for meeting Sustainable Development Goal 3. This study employs a systematic literature review and an e-Delphi survey to explore how a pre-occupancy evaluation integrated within BIM frameworks addresses affective responses and suggests ways to improve design decisions that align with the UN’s sustainable development goals. The study identified a research gap in how BIM evaluations are conducted during the conceptual design stage, including crucial sensory aspects for human well-being. The research suggests incorporating evidence-based design instruments like body sensor networks (BSN) and immersive virtual reality and methods like neurophenomenology to enhance the assessment of user interactions in the design process. Prioritizing the human-centered design approach right from the start can facilitate the integration of innovative workflows into architecture, engineering, and construction practices. Overcoming resistance to these workflows and methodologies is essential for advancing BIM’s role in fostering spatial environments that support health, well-being, and positive affective experiences. Background: Biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma (BSNS) is a low-grade tumor of the sinonasal tract with frequent extension to the orbit and skull base. Due to its rare incidence and recent histopathological and molecular characterization, little data are available in regard to its natural history, treatment and surveillance protocol. Methods: A comprehensive literature review in Embase online electronic databases on BSNS was made. The analyzed factors included the patients’ sex and age, presenting symptoms and signs, anatomical origin and pattern of growth of the tumor, immunohistochemical and molecular features, time to treatment, type of treatment, surgical approach, extent of resection, peri- and post-operative complications, adjuvant therapies, clinical outcome, recurrence and overall survival rates. Results: This literature review involved 34 studies for an overall series of 149 cases of BSNS. The female (66.9%) and middle-aged populations (median 54.88 years old) were mainly affected. The most frequent clinical onset was nasal obstruction (81%), followed by facial discomfort (44%), epistaxis (15.5%) and ocular impairment (14.3%). Ethmoid sinus (67.8%) and nasal cavity (45.4%) were the most common anatomical site of tumor origin, while an extension to the orbit and skull base was registered in 28.7% and 24.5% of cases. Surgery was the main treatment, especially in the form of endoscopic endonasal approach (56.9%), and allowed for gross total resection in 79% of cases. The recurrence rate was 26.2%; three cases of tumor-related death were reported. Median follow-up was 4.6 years. Conclusions: Biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma is a rare and unique tumoral entity in terms of biological and clinical behavior. Based on the current knowledge, surgery plays the leading role in treatment, accounting for gross total tumor resection in most cases, allowing for clinical symptom and sign resolution and presenting a low rate of perioperative complications. The type of approach and the aim of surgery should be assessed case by case according to patient and pathology features and the surgeon’s experience, as well as the aim of the treatment. Further studies including large surgical series and with long follow-up are required to define prognostic factors and guidelines of treatment for this peculiar pathological entity. Full article
