The Atlantic sharpnose (Rhizoprionodon terraenovae), blacknose (Carcharhinus acronotus), blacktip (Carcharhinus limbatus), and bonnethead (Sphyrna tiburo) sharks are commonly encountered large mobile consumers found in the estuaries along the western North Atlantic coast. The bulk of the dietary data for these species has been coarsely recorded at a broad taxonomic level (e.g., “teleost fish”). Here, we used DNA metabarcoding of fecal DNA collected using non-lethal cloacal swabs to identify the species of prey contributing to the diets of these shark species and measure the degree of trophic overlap. Samples were collected from 24 Atlantic sharpnose, 33 blacknose, six blacktip, and 17 bonnethead sharks in the summer of 2020. Based on previous dietary research on these shark species, we targeted teleost fishes and crustaceans using two previously published primer sets. From the 80 sharks sampled off the coast of North Carolina, we identified 38 prey taxa, with 82% classified to the species level and all assigned to at least the genus and family levels. The most common prey taxa found in the diet of the bonnethead was Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes sapidus; 44.75%, based on percent of occurrence) followed by penaeid shrimp (Penaeus spp.; 24.41%), mantis shrimp (Squilla empusa; 20.34%), and spot (Leiostomus xanthurus; 4.75%). Atlantic sharpnose and blacknose sharks had the largest Levin’s niche overlap, with both species relying on the same two most frequently consumed prey taxa: penaeid shrimp (Atlantic sharpnose: 33.33%, percent of occurrence, and blacknose: 34.78%) and spot (Atlantic sharpnose: 32.70% and blacknose: 22.32%). Bonnetheads and blacktips had the least amount of overlap between all shark species, where blacktips primarily consumed menhaden (Brevoortia spp.; 58.62%) and penaeid shrimp (26.44%). Our findings highlight the value of DNA metabarcoding in refining our understanding of predator diets, moving beyond broad taxonomic classifications to identify species-level prey associations and trophic interactions. As coastal habitats undergo increasing alteration due to anthropogenic impacts, such information is crucial for fisheries management, helping to identify key prey dependencies and anticipate potential ecosystem shifts. Seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri is under heavy capture-pressure in the western Atlantic, requiring periods of fishing suspension to protect the propagation of the species in the wild. This work aims to describe the stages of gonadal development and the ovaries of X. kroyeri in trawling in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean of Brazil associated with climatic characteristics of temperature and precipitation. In total, 3658 specimens were captured in monthly collections from March 2019 to February 2020. The female gonads were classified macroscopically and microscopically according to the maturation stage and correlated with precipitation and temperature data. Five stages of maturation were observed: immature, initial maturation, advanced maturation, mature, and spawned. The highest percentage of mature females was found in May and July, and the average size of the female cephalothorax at the first gonadal maturation was 1.7 cm. The recruitment period was observed in April, with more juveniles. Precipitation showed a negative correlation with the number of mature females. April, May, and July are essential for the life cycle of the X. kroyeri population on the coast of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The results suggest that the current closed season for the species should be reconsidered. Full article

The blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 is native to the western coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Although its arrival to the Mediterranean was probably due to ballast water, this species has several characteristics that have enabled it to successfully invade countless localities in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Little is known about its feeding habits and ecosystem impacts in the Mediterranean basin. This study aimed to provide information on the natural diet of C. sapidus by comparing the stomach contents of specimens caught in different seasons and habitats of the SE Iberian Peninsula (hypersaline waters in Mar Menor Lagoon and brackish waters in Guardamar Bay). This study also tested whether gender influences prey selection and if ovigerous females exhibit limited feeding activity. Regarding the frequency of occurrence, the results indicated that in Mar Menor Lagoon the most frequently consumed prey were Crustacea (60%), followed by fish (57%) and Mollusca (29%), whilst in Guardamar Bay, Mollusca (40%), sediment (32%), algae (24%) and Crustacea (24%) were dominant. It has been determined that this species predates heavily on Mediterranean shrimp Penaeus kerathurus, an economically important shrimp species in the lagoon area. Analysis using a generalised linear model indicated that sex, season and size class were factors that significantly influenced the stomach content weight. Furthermore, non-ovigerous females had significantly fuller stomachs than ovigerous individuals. Since the population of Callinectes sapidus tends to increase in the Mediterranean basin, monitoring of its feeding ecology is recommended to determine its impact on the ecosystem. Full article

Here, we confirm the presence of two species of caridean shrimps for the first time in Brazil: Latreutes parvulus and Ambidexter cochensis. During active samplings conducted in December 2023, April 2024 and September 2024 on the rocky shore of Prainha da USP (Ubatuba municipality, São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil), we captured five ovigerous females of L. parvulus and fifteen individuals of A. cochensis (five males, three non-ovigerous females and seven ovigerous females). All the females of L. parvulus exhibited eyestalks with small, truncated processes separating the cornea from the stalk, a unique feature of this species. On the other hand, all specimens of A. cochensis exhibited a unique combination of characteristics: a rostrum with an apex bifid, a stylocerite bearing a lateral spinule and a transverse row of setae between the anterior pair of spines, and three longitudinal rows of setae on the telson. Also, males of A. cochensis had the tip of their appendix masculina armed with four simple apical setae and another two setae positioned below them. All analyzed shrimps had fully developed gametes in their reproductive systems, indicating breeding populations in this area. This is the first record of L. parvulus on the Atlantic coast of South America and a new meridional distribution limit for A. cochensis. Full article

The invasion of the golden mussel has resulted in considerable environmental and socioeconomic alterations, which present a considerable threat to the native biodiversity and sustainability of the region. Understanding the distribution and biological characteristics of this Asian mussel, as well as its interaction with human activities, is of the utmost importance to developing effective strategies for mitigating and preventing its further spread. This study examines the dispersal route and incidence of golden mussels, tracing their movement from initial populations in Argentina to their arrival in the São Francisco River Basin (SFR). The presence of the mussel was confirmed through an integrative assessment that included shell taxonomic analyses and mitochondrial DNA signatures. This assessment identified populations located 7.5 km from the river’s mouth, close to the Atlantic Ocean, in areas such as shrimp farms, artisanal ports, and marinas. The analysis of mitochondrial DNA revealed the presence of South-American-specific and shared ancestral haplotypes in the SFR, Grande River, and Argentina. These findings indicate that intracontinental colonization toward the northeast region of South America originated from Asian populations that entered South America via Argentina. The absence of Asian-specific signatures in the SFR, combined with a geomorphological structure unsuitable for large ports or transoceanic vessels, supports the hypothesis of the intracontinental dispersal of Limnoperna fortunei. Invasive alien species pose severe threats to global biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and socio-economic values, particularly in coastal and marine ecosystems. This study aimed to investigate the trophic interactions between alien species and native fauna in a Mediterranean coastal ecosystem. Notably, our research focused on the presence and ecological roles of the invasive Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) and the brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus) within the Vendicari Nature Reserve (VNR), a protected area on the southeastern coast of Sicily, Italy. Field observations, specimen collection, and interviews with local fishermen were conducted to assess the presence, distribution, and feeding habits of these species. The results revealed significant temporal shifts in the diet of C. sapidus, with a clear decrease in predation on the alien Penaeus aztecus (first observed in the VNR) over the study months. The presence of C. sapidus in the fishing area around the reserve has been detected for many years, while P. aztecus appears to have recently colonized the area. Additionally, photographic evidence documented the predation of C. sapidus by Octopus vulgaris, highlighting a potential adaptive feeding behavior by the common octopus in response to the abundance of this invasive crab. The integration of scientific research, local ecological knowledge, and community participation is essential for mitigating the impacts of biological invasions and preserving the biodiversity and ecological integrity of natural ecosystems. Shrimp shells are a key source of chitin, commonly extracted through chemical methods, which may cause minor molecular damage. Nowadays, there is great interest in achieving close to zero protein content in crude chitin in order to use it for high-end markets. Therefore, this study optimized the enzymatic deproteination using two commercial proteases (SEB Pro FL100 and Sea-B Zyme L200) for effective and fast removal of residual protein from Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) shell chitin for the first time. The protein content was determined using both the Kjeldahl method and amino acid analysis using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The performance of papain (Sea B Zyme L200) was superior to fungal protease (SEB Pro FL100) for this application, and it achieved residual protein content of 2.01%, while the calculated optimum for the latter enzyme was 6.18%. A model was developed using 24 factorial design, and it was predicted that the lowest residual protein content using fungal protease and papain could be achieved at the following conditions: a pH of 4.2 and 7, and an enzyme concentration of 4 and 1.5%, respectively. Thus, the low-protein content obtained using enzymatic deproteination could be an alternative approach to the traditional methods, indicating their potential to produce premium-quality chitin. The snow/pink crab (Chionoecetes opilio) and Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) are widely distributed in the North Atlantic Ocean. During processing/consumption, about 80% of the harvest is discarded as processing waste, which is a rich source of protein, chitin, minerals, and carotenoids. This study, for the first time, investigated the proximate composition and individual amino acids, minerals, and carotenoids from different body parts (carapace, shoulder, claw, tip, and leg) of snow crabs and shrimp shells. Shrimp proteins were found to be abundant and well-balanced in their amino acid composition. Compared to shrimp shells, a lower content of amino acids was found in the snow crab, depending on the part of the shell used. Moreover, crab shells, mainly crab claws, contained a higher (p < 0.05) level of chitin compared to shrimp shells. Seven micro-elements (Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Ba, and Ce) and six macro-elements (Ca, Na, K, Mg, P, and Sr) were identified using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Among them, calcium and iron were higher in crab carapaces (p < 0.05), followed by shrimp shells and other crab shell segments. Additionally, shrimp and crab carapaces contained a significant level of carotenoids, and these were mainly composed of astaxanthin and its mono- and diesters, along with zeaxanthin, astacene, canthaxanthin, and lutein. Thus, this investigation provides detailed information to allow upcycling of shellfish waste and addresses the knowledge gap concerning the availability of various nutrients in different crab sections and shrimp shells. Seafood Consumption Trends among U.S. Consumers: Influences of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) recommend twice-weekly consumption of seafood for health benefits, yet many U.S. consumers have historically fallen short of this target. The economic and societal impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic brought concern about further declines in seafood intake. This study evaluated the influence of COVID-19 on seafood intake among U.S. residents, toward understanding potential public health implications. A nationally representative cross-sectional survey of 1200 U.S. residents conducted in June 2021 evaluated the frequency and types of seafood consumed, and purchase methods used, before and during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results (weighted data) indicate most U.S. consumers (90%) eat seafood, yet only 19% meet the seafood DGA. The likelihood of meeting the DGA was higher among consumers who were Asian, Black, or Hispanic; older; unmarried; of higher income; familiar with the DGA; choosing seafood for health reasons; and living in Atlantic or Gulf coast states. During COVID-19, some increased seafood intake for health reasons (45%), while others reduced intake due to factors such as cost (29%), limited availability (16%), and challenges with preparation (11%). Fresh salmon (68%), frozen shrimp (59%), and cooked oysters (41%) were most frequently purchased by consumers of these foods. More consumers indicated purchasing wild salmon (62%), shrimp (44%), and oysters (51%) than farm-raised products, though many were unsure. Fewer consumers included seafood in online grocery orders (36%) than meal kit orders (61%) when using these services. Though many consumers continued to eat seafood despite decreased restaurant patronage, most did not reach the intake level needed to maximize health benefits. Educational and marketing efforts promoting the health benefits of seafood and the convenience of procurement via online purchase methods may encourage intake across demographic groups to benefit public health outcomes in the U.S. Full article

Shrimp feed formulations have moved towards less fish meal and more of the readily available and cheaper plant proteins. To counteract the lower attractiveness and palatability of plant proteins, feeds are supplemented with ingredients known to have chemoattractive properties that will increase feed intake. This study investigated the putative chemoattractive effect of Calanus finmarchicus hydrolysate, when used as a dietary supplement in shrimp feeds. C. finmarchicus is a zooplankton species native to the northern Atlantic Ocean and is a novel and sustainable raw material for shrimp feed products. Diet attractiveness was evaluated in a 24-day feeding trial with whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) by measuring the intake of 12 diets with various levels of fish meal, calanus hydrolysate, and krill (Euphausia superba) meal. Higher inclusion rates of both ingredients resulted in increased feed intake, and supplementing the high fish meal diet with calanus hydrolysate gave a statistically significant higher feed intake. Low molecular weight peptides, chemoattractive amino acids, and the water-soluble nature of the hydrolysate could explain the chemoattractive properties observed in the study. Full article

Comparing co-occurring species may provide insights into how aspects of ecology may play a role in influencing their microbial communities. During the 2019 commercial shrimp trawl season off coastal Georgia, swabs of skin, gills, cloaca, and gut were taken for three species of batoids (Butterfly Ray, Bluntnose Stingray, and Atlantic Stingray) and one shark species (Atlantic Sharpnose) for high-throughput sequencing of the V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. White muscle was analyzed for stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) to evaluate potential niche overlap in these four sympatric mesopredators. Significant differences were found in both δ13C and δ15N signatures across species, suggesting a degree of resource partitioning. When examined within tissue type, the host species had a weak effect on β-diversity for cloaca and skin, with no differences found for gill and gut samples. However, network analysis metrics demonstrated a stronger species-specific effect and distinct microbial community relationships were apparent between the shark and batoids, with the former having tighter networks for both internally- and externally-influenced tissues (gut/cloaca and skin/gills, respectively). Despite overlapping habitat use, species’ microbiomes differed in their organizational structuring that paralleled differences in stable isotope results, suggesting a mediating role of species-specific ecology on bacterial microbiomes. A new species of the rare shrimp genus Bresilia is described and illustrated from shallow-water lava tubes in Cabo Verde. Characteristics differentiating the new species from its three known Atlantic congeners are listed and discussed. Scanning electron images (SEM) are provided of the peculiar chela ornamentation of the first pereiopod in the genus. Full article

Synalpheopsis gen. nov. is established for a remarkable new alpheid species, Synalpheopsis laureae sp. nov., presently known only from the male holotype collected at 111–162 m east of La Désirade, Guadeloupe, Lesser Antilles. Synalpheopsis gen. nov. peculiarly combines features of two genera, Alpheopsis Coutière, 1897 and Synalpheus Spence Bate, 1888; however, it is presumably closer to the former genus. The new genus is characterised by the moderately developed orbital hoods, well-developed rostrum and orbital teeth, sixth pleonite without articulated flap, tip of the third maxilliped with crown of spiniform setae, chelipeds with two strong teeth on distolateral margin and lacking snapping mechanism on finger cutting edges, and gill formula without mastigobranchs and setobranchs.
