This narrative review explains the history of anaphylactic or hypersensitivity reactions, their connection to the cardiovascular system, and Kounis syndrome, which is linked to hypersensitivity. Additional subjects discussed include immunoglobulin E and serum tryptase, common pathways of allergic and nonallergic cardiovascular events, current perspectives on Kounis syndrome, allergic myocardial infarction, allergic angina, and the impact of COVID-19 and its vaccination on Kounis syndrome. Kounis syndrome is a distinct kind of acute vascular disease that affects the coronary, cerebral, mesenteric, peripheral, and venous systems. Kounis syndrome is currently used to describe coronary symptoms linked to disorders involving mast cell activation and inflammatory cell interactions, such as those involving T-lymphocytes and macrophages, which further induce allergic, hypersensitive, anaphylactic, or anaphylactic insults. Platelet activating factor, histamine, neutral proteases like tryptase and chymase, arachidonic acid products, and a range of cytokines and chemokines released during the activation process are among the inflammatory mediators that cause it. Proinflammatory cytokines are primarily produced by mast cells in COVID-19 infections. Mast cell-derived proteases and eosinophil-associated mediators are also more prevalent in the lung tissues and sera of COVID-19 patients. As a modern global threat to civilization, COVID-19 is linked to chemical patterns that can activate mast cells; therefore, allergic stimuli are usually the reason. Virus-associated molecular patterns can activate mast cells, but allergic triggers are typically the cause. By activating SARS-CoV-2 and other toll-like receptors, a variety of proinflammatory mediators, including IL-6 and IL-1β, are released, potentially contributing to the pathology of COVID-19. Background: MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein) plays an important role in early phases of atherogenesis as well as in plaque destabilization, which causes cardiovascular events to play an important role in low-grade inflammation. Obesity, particularly extreme obesity, is a pivotal risk factor for atherosclerosis and many other diseases. In the early stages, bariatric surgery might stop or slow atherogenesis by suppressing inflammation, but also in later stages, preventing plaque destabilization. The aim of this meta-analysis was to provide an answer as to whether bariatric surgery has a significant effect on circulating MCP-1 level or not. Methods: A systematic literature search in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science was performed from inception to 1 January 2022. Meta-analysis was performed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) V2 software. In order to heterogeneity compensation of studies in terms of study design and treatment duration, the characteristics of the studied populations random-effects model and the generic inverse variance weighting method were used. To investigate the relationship with the estimated effect size, a random-effect meta-regression model was used. To assess the exitance of publication bias in the meta-analysis, the funnel plot, Begg’s rank correlation, and Egger’s weighted regression tests were used. Results: Meta-analysis of 25 studies with 927 subjects included demonstrated a significant decrease of MCP-1 concentration after bariatric surgery. The data of meta-regression did not indicate any association between the alterations in body mass index (BMI) and absolute difference in MCP-1 levels, but a linear relationship between the changes in MCP-1 and length of follow-up was proven. Conclusions: Bariatric surgery significantly decreases MCP-1 concentration, but there was no association between the changes in BMI and absolute difference in MCP-1 levels before and after the surgery. Earlier research has suggested that the male reproductive system could be particularly vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection, and infections involving this novel disease not only pose serious health threats but could also cause male infertility. Data from multi-organ research during the recent outbreak indicate that male infertility might not be diagnosed as a possible consequence of COVID-19 infection. Several review papers have summarized the etiology factors on male fertility, but to date no review paper has been published defining the effect of COVID-19 infection on male fertility. Therefore, the aim of this study is to review the published scientific evidence regarding male fertility potential, the risk of infertility during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on the male reproductive system. The effects of COVID-19 infection and the subsequent vaccination on seminal fluid, sperm count, sperm motility, sperm morphology, sperm viability, testes and sex hormones are particularly reviewed. Background: Statins are the most widely used drugs for decreasing elevated serum LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and thus for the prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), but they have also some pleiotropic effects, including anti-inflammatory properties. Atherosclerosis is a low-grade inflammatory disease, and elevated ferritin is considered to be one of the markers of inflammation. Since the results of studies on the effects of statins on serum ferritin levels are conflicting, this meta-analysis was performed. Methods: A literature search was performed using major electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and ISI Web of Science) from inception up to 5 March 2022 to find studies evaluating the effect of different statins on serum ferritin levels. The effect size was determined using weighted mean differences (WMDs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: The meta-analysis of nine studies (1611 patients) analyzing the effects of statins on serum ferritin levels that were included showed a significant decrease in circulating ferritin levels caused by statins. The results did not suggest any significant association between the changes in concentrations of serum ferritin and the duration of treatment with statins. Conclusions: Statin therapy decreases the circulating concentrations of ferritin, which might be beneficial for the prevention and/or progression of ASCVD. This effect might be explained by the anti-inflammatory effects and maybe some other pleiotropic effects of statins and not by their lipid-lowering effects. Full article

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health problem. CKD causes patients to be hospitalized for a longer time to treat the disease. The impact of the hospitalization brings major changes and affects the quality of life (QoL) of the patients. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of hospitalization on the QoL of patients with CKD. A cross-sectional study was conducted at the inpatient departments (IPDs) and outpatient departments (OPDs) of selected hospitals, in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia. The kidney disease quality of life (KDQOL) scale was used for the data collection and the findings were analyzed. The hospitalized patients had a poorer QoL than the OPD patients. The physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) mean scores were 52.82 ± 2.32 and 52.57 ± 2.93 in IPD patients, respectively, and 63.46 ± 3.65 and 66.39 ± 0.91 in OPD patients, respectively, which was significant (p < 0.0001). The QoL of patients decreased in the end stages of CKD. A significant association was observed between gender, occupation, smoking, and the stages of CKD with the QoL of the hospitalized patients. Measures must be taken to improve the QoL of these patients at all levels. Full article

While a large body of literature has shown the health problems of illicit drug use, research is needed on how substance abuse impacts DNA damage and contaminants in blood, especially given Pb-contaminated opium. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the levels of lead (Pb), 8-hydroxy di-guanine (8-oxo-Gua), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the blood serum of opium addicts and non-addict people. The current study is a case–control study with a cross-sectional design. A sample of 50 opium-addicted and non-addict adults were chosen for this study using convenience and random sampling methods. Participants were divided into two groups: addicts and non-addicts. The atomic absorption spectroscopy method was used to measure the quantity of Pb, and the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method was used to measure the amount of 8-oxo-Gua and MDA. The data were analyzed using an independent t-test. The results show that the amount of Pb in the blood serum of addicted women and men was higher than levels in non-addict men and women, for the study participants (p-value = 0.001). Blood levels were not significantly different between addicts and non-addicts for men or women for 8-oxo-Gua (p-value = 0.647 for women and p-value = 0.785 for men) and MDA (p-value = 0.867 for women and p-value = 0.995 for men). In general, addicts’ blood Pb levels were found to be substantially higher than those of normal non-addict persons in this pilot study. As a result, testing for blood Pb levels in addicts may be informative in instances when symptoms are inconclusive. Full article

Despite the ongoing vaccination efforts, there is still an urgent need for safe and effective treatments to help curb the debilitating effects of COVID-19 disease. This systematic review aimed to investigate the efficacy of supplemental curcumin treatment on clinical outcomes and inflammation-related biomarker profiles in COVID-19 patients. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE, ProQuest, and Ovid databases up to 30 June 2021 to find studies that assessed the effects of curcumin-related compounds in mild to severe COVID-19 patients. Six studies were identified which showed that curcumin supplementation led to a significant decrease in common symptoms, duration of hospitalization and deaths. In addition, all of these studies showed that the intervention led to amelioration of cytokine storm effects thought to be a driving force in severe COVID-19 cases. This was seen as a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in proinflammatory cytokines such as IL1β and IL6, with a concomitant significant (p < 0.05) increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-10, IL-35 and TGF-α. Taken together, these findings suggested that curcumin exerts its beneficial effects through at least partial restoration of pro-inflammatory/anti-inflammatory balance. In conclusion, curcumin supplementation may offer an efficacious and safe option for improving COVID-19 disease outcomes. We highlight the point that future clinical studies of COVID-19 disease should employ larger cohorts of patients in different clinical settings with standardized preparations of curcumin-related compounds. This article analyzes the manuscripts in the Matenadaran in Yerevan, Armenia that are ascribed to the Prophet Muḥammad and ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib and their translations into Farsi and Armenian. These important manuscripts have until now been neglected by scholars, and so we will here provide a general overview of them and how they were received by the Armenian Apostolic Church. I herein demonstrate how these documents were recognized by Muslim authorities, shedding light on how Muslim rulers managed the affairs of their Christian subjects. These documents, it would seem, also influenced the decrees of Muslim rulers to the Armenian Apostolic Church. Full article
