Crude protein (CP) in diets is essential for maintaining animal health and production performance. However, the protein requirements of Wanxi white geese during the laying period are not well understood. In this study, 120 one-year-old Wanxi white geese were selected and divided into three groups based on similar body weights, namely 14% CP, 15% CP, and 16% CP, with each group consisting of 40 animals. The feed was administered for 120 days. Compared with the 14% CP group, the 15% CP group showed a significant increase in the number of courtships and matings, a reduction in nesting frequency, an enhancement in the egg fertility, and an improvement in the nutritional components, and specific gravity of eggs. Additionally, the 16% CP group promoted the secretion of serum E2, LH, P4, and GnRH while inhibiting the secretion of LEP, compared with the 14% CP group. Taken together, it can be seen that a diet containing 15% CP can enhance the reproductive performance, egg fertility, and egg quality of Wanxi white geese. This study is the first to analyze the effects of different dietary CP levels on the reproductive performance and egg specific gravity of Wanxi white geese during the laying period, providing a theoretical basis for formulating feeding standards for this breed. Space particle radiation induces charging and discharging phenomena in spacecraft dielectric materials, leading to electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electromagnetic pulses (EMP), which pose significant risks to spacecraft electronic systems by causing interference and potential damage. Accurate and timely monitoring of these phenomena, combined with a comprehensive understanding of their underlying mechanisms, is critical for developing effective protection strategies against satellite charging effects. Addressing in-orbit monitoring requirements, this study proposes the design of a compact sleeve monopole antenna. Through simulations, the relationships between the antenna’s design parameters and its voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) are analyzed alongside its critical performance characteristics, including frequency band, gain, radiation pattern, and matching circuit. The proposed antenna demonstrates operation within a frequency range of (28.73–31.25) MHz (VSWR < 2), with a center frequency of 30 MHz and a relative bandwidth of 8.4%. Performance evaluations and simulation-based experiments reveal that the antenna can measure pulse signals with electric field strengths ranging from (−1000 to −80) V/m and (80 to 1000) V/m, centered at 25.47 MHz. It reliably monitors discharge pulses generated by electron irradiation on spacecraft-grade FR4 (Flame-Retardant 4) dielectric materials, providing technical support for the engineering application of discharge research in space environments. Nitrate is abundant in natural foods, especially plant-based foods, having the potential to enhance muscle function. However, its relationship with sarcopenia in the context of daily diet remains unexplored. This cohort study investigated the associations between dietary nitrate intake and sarcopenia, as well as related symptoms, using data including 28,229 participants with a mean follow-up of 9.37 years from the UK Biobank. Dietary nitrate intake was estimated using a comprehensive nitrate food database. Adjusted logistic regression models suggested potential inverse associations between total nitrate intake and risks of sarcopenia plus pre-sarcopenia (Sarc-Presarc), low hand grip strength (HGS), and low walking pace. Similar results were primarily observed for nitrate from plant-based foods. With higher intake, females appeared to have higher HGS and a decreased risk of Sarc-Presarc, while males exhibited a reduced risk of low walking pace. The inverse association between nitrate intake and low skeletal muscle mass index was more evident in individuals aged 65 and above. These associations seemed independent of antioxidants, though higher antioxidants might augment the protective effect against low walking pace. Mediation analyses indicated that protein homeostasis and blood pressure might mediate these associations. These findings suggested that a higher dietary nitrate intake from plant-based foods could contribute to sarcopenia prevention, though further research is needed to confirm these observations. The fabrication of micro-holes in hard-to-machine materials presents considerable challenges in precision machining. This study proposes a novel approach that employs high-strength micro-grinding tools with a central abrasive grain absence to create micro-holes through helical grinding. Due to the random distribution of abrasive grains, the absence of grains at the tool’s center becomes an inevitable technical challenge. This research examines the correlation between the diameter of the absence zone and the bottom morphology of the machined hole, highlighting the potential formation of disc-shaped or cylindrical residues. A model for predicting the height of the disc-shaped residues is developed, and the mechanisms governing their removal during grinding are further explored. The findings indicate that when a central grain absence exists, the first abrasive grain surrounding the absence zone, referred to as the inner-edge grain, is responsible for removing the disc-shaped residues. Based on these results, a novel 0.8 mm diameter micro-PCD milling–grinding tool with a central edge absence is designed, and experimental validation is performed using 65% SiCp/Al composite materials. The experimental results confirm that the central grain absence leads to the formation of disc-shaped residues at the bottom of the machined hole during helical grinding, and the morphology of the experimentally obtained residues aligns with the theoretical predictions and simulations. This study significantly advances micro-grinding wheel technology and provides a solid foundation for the precision machining of micro-holes in hard-to-machine materials. Full article

Helical grinding is crucial for manufacturing small holes in hard-to-machine composite ceramics. This study introduces a geometric model of undeformed chips to analyze the cutting characteristics of abrasive grains on both the bottom and side edges of the tool. It reveals for the first time that the distribution of cutting grains—pure bottom-edge, pure side-edge, and mixed-edge—is influenced by the tool diameter and eccentricity. A novel calculation method for the distribution range (Dp) of pure bottom-edge grains is proposed, demonstrating that using a tool diameter at or below two-thirds of the target hole diameter effectively eliminates pure bottom-edge grains, improving chip evacuation, reducing chip adhesion, and optimizing cutting performance. Experimental validation on small holes in SiCp/Al composites (65% volume fraction) confirmed these findings and provides practical guidance for optimizing cutting parameters and tool design. Heavy mental contamination in urban land is a serious environmental issue for large cities. Visible and near-infrared spectroscopy has been rapidly developed as a new method for estimating copper (Cu) levels, which is one of the heavy metals. Spectral pretreatment is essential for reducing noise and enhancing analysis. In the traditional method, the entire spectrum is uniformly pretreated. However, in reality, the influence of pretreatment on the spectrum may vary depending on the wavelengths. Limited research has been conducted on breaking down the entire spectrum into distinct parts for individualized pretreatment, an innovative method called piecewise pretreatment. This study gathered 250 topsoil samples (0–20 cm) in Shenzhen City, southwest China, and obtained their vis-NIR spectra (350–2500 nm) in the laboratory. This study divided the spectrum into three parts, each processed by six commonly used spectral pretreatments. The number of pretreated parts varied from 1 to 3, resulting in 342 PLSR models being built. Compared to the traditional method, piecewise pretreatment showed an increase in mean residual predictive deviation (RPD) from 1.55 to 1.71 and an increase in the percentage of positive outcomes in ∆RPD from 33.33% to 55.56%. Thus, we concluded that piecewise pretreatment generally outperforms the traditional method. Furthermore, piecewise pretreatment aims to choose the most effective pretreatment method for each part to optimize the Cu estimation model. Full article

This paper presents for the first time the results of marine gravity recovery using the ocean observation data acquired by Tiangong-2 interferometric imaging radar altimeter (TG2 InIRA) which demonstrate not only the balanced accuracies of the north and east components of deflection of the vertical (DOV) as envisaged, but also the improved spatial resolutions of DOV compared with that by conventional altimeters (CAs). Moreover, much higher measurement efficiency owing to the wide-swath capability and the great potential in accuracy improvement of marine gravity field are also demonstrated. TG2 InIRA adopts the interferometry with short baseline and takes small incidence angles, by which wide-swath sea surface height (SSH) can be measured with high accuracy. Gravity recovery experiments in the Western Pacific area are conducted to demonstrate the performance, advantages and capability of TG2 InIRA. SSH data processing algorithms and DOV calculation have been designed by taking the wide-swath feature into account, based on which, the gravity anomalies are then calculated using the inverse Vening Meinesz formula. The derived gravity anomalies are compared with both the published gravity models and the shipborne gravity measurements. The results show that the accuracy of TG2 InIRA is equivalent to, or even a little better than, that of CAs. The fused gravity result using equal TG2 InIRA data and CAs data performs better than those using TG2 InIRA data alone or CAs data alone. Due to the signal bandwidth of TG2 InIRA is only 40 MHz which is much smaller than that of CAs, much higher accuracy can be hopefully achieved for future missions if larger signal bandwidth is used. Background: Evidence in adults suggests that exposure to artificial light-at-night (ALAN) leads to obesity. However, little is known about whether this effect exists in children and adolescents. We aimed to investigate whether ALAN exposure was associated with overweight and obesity in school-aged children and adolescents and whether this association varied with socioeconomic status. Methods: Data on the height and weight of 129,500 children and adolescents aged 10–18 years from 72 cities were extracted from the 2014 Chinese National Survey on Students’ Constitution and Health (CNSSCH). The ALAN area percentage and average ALAN intensity were calculated using the Visible/Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite. The subjects were separated into three categories based on the cities’ gross domestic product per capita (GDPPC). A mixed-effect logistic regression model and generalized additive model (GAM) were utilized to evaluate the association between ALAN exposure and overweight and obesity in children and adolescents stratified by municipal GDPPC. Results: Both ALAN area (OR = 1.194, 95% CI: 1.175–1.212) and ALAN intensity (OR = 1.019, 95% CI: 1.017–1.020) were positively associated with overweight and obesity in children and adolescents, and the associations remained robust after adjusting for covariates. ORs for overweight and obesity and ALAN area decreased as GDPPC level increased (first tertile: OR = 1.457, 95% CI: 1.335–1.590; second tertile: OR = 1.350, 95% CI: 1.245–1.464; third tertile: OR = 1.100, 95% CI: 1.081–1.119). Similar results were observed for ALAN intensity. In the GAM models, thresholds existed in almost all these spline trends, indicating that ALAN might have a nonlinear association with overweight and obesity. Conclusions: ALAN contributed to the development of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents and this effect differed with GDPPC. Future longitudinal studies should confirm the causal relationship between ALAN and obesity. Moreover, reducing unnecessary exposure to artificial light at night may have beneficial implications for controlling childhood and adolescent obesity, particularly in low-income areas. Full article

We performed this study to investigate the association between sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption and male pattern hair loss (MPHL) in young men. We conducted this cross-sectional study from January to April 2022 in mainland China. Young people aged 18–45 years (n = 1951) were recruited from 31 provinces in China. We used a self-reported online survey for data collection. We explored the associations between the amount/frequency of SSB consumption and MPHL by using a binary logistic regression model, with adjustments for sociodemographic, hair status, dietary intake, lifestyle, and psychological factors. Among the 1028 participants (27.8 ± 7.2 years) in the final analysis, we found that high SSB consumption is associated with a higher risk of MPHL. We recommend more support to decrease SSB consumption among young people to minimize negative health outcomes. Full article

Background: Seasonal influenza may overlap with the COVID-19 pandemic, and children are one of the priority populations for influenza vaccination in China, yet vaccine coverage has been low. This study aimed to investigate the extent of parental influenza vaccine hesitancy (IVH) and to explore the associated factors. Methods: The study was conducted in Shanghai, China, from 1 June 2022 to 31 July 2022, using an anonymous questionnaire to survey a random sample of parents of children aged six months to 14 years. Binary logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with IVH. Results: Of the 5016 parents, 34.05% had IVH. Multivariate analysis showed that after adjustment for non-modifiable markers (i.e., sociodemographic, health status, and past vaccination status), being affected by negative influenza vaccine news and having higher “complacency” were positively associated with parental IVH. Higher knowledge of influenza vaccination, being recommended by healthcare workers (HCWs), people around having a positive attitude toward influenza vaccine and having higher levels of “confidence” and “convenience” were negatively associated with parental IVH. Conclusions: In China, public health education aimed at modifying vaccination-related attitudes and beliefs, as well as knowledge and societal influences, could help reduce influenza vaccination hesitancy. Along with the increasing number of prefabricated buildings being constructed in China each year, the incident rate of hoisting operations has been continuously rising. In order to improve construction safety in hoisting operations of prefabricated buildings, this paper analyzes the construction workers’ unsafe behaviors using the Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) method. A questionnaire survey and a literature review were first performed to gather information on safety risks and influencing factors during each stage of hoisting operations, and the survey results were statistically analyzed using the SPSS software. Next, HAZOP was applied to identify the deviation and change of the unsafe behaviors as well as their causes, consequences, and countermeasures. Finally, a case study was presented to verify the effectiveness of the countermeasures through a comparison and evaluation method from experimental economics. This paper demonstrates the use of HAZOP to analyze construction workers’ unsafe behaviors in hoisting operations of prefabricated buildings, and effective countermeasures in each stage of hoisting operations are proposed to mitigate unsafe behaviors. This paper therefore provides an innovative method and a theoretical foundation for reducing unsafe behaviors in hoisting operations of prefabricated buildings and serves as a reference for decision-making for hoisting safety policies in prefabricated construction projects. Electric vehicles are regarded as a significant way to mitigate the global energy crisis and the environmental pollution problem. Motor control is a very important part for electric vehicles. As for hardware, a motor controller usually has components such as a power module, microprocessor unit, IGBT driver, sensors, and resolver-to-digital convertor. As for software, a field-oriented control (FOC) with space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) is a popular method, while model predictive control (MPC) has recently shown great potential in motor drives. In this paper, both FOC and MPC are discussed and the performances are compared based on experiments. As the implementation is on a digital processor, the discretization and normalization are addressed, and the flux observer and speed estimation are discussed. Some practical issues for implementation are also talked about, such as field weakening control, overmodulation, etc. This paper focuses on how to implement the improved motor control for electric vehicles as industrial applications. The steady-state torque performances of this motor controller are verified by motor test-bench experiments. MPC shows as good performance as FOC in these experiments. Full article

This paper presents a novel RF small-signal equivalent circuit model and parameter extraction for 3 nm nanosheet gate-all-around field effect transistor (GAAFET). The extrinsic parasitic effect induced by ground-signal-ground (GSG) layout is evaluated by 3D full-wave electromagnetic simulation, and an improved five-step analytical parameter extraction method is proposed for such extrinsic GSG layout. The model parameters for the intrinsic device are analytically determined with the help of nonlinear rational function fitting. The accuracy of the proposed extraction method was confirmed via comparisons between device simulator and electromagnetic simulator with frequency responses up to 300 GHz. Excellent agreement is obtained between the simulated and modeled S-parameters, and the calculated error is lower than 2.689% for the extrinsic layout, and 0.897% for the intrinsic device in the whole frequency range among multi-bias points. Effects of LPS on the Secretion of Gonadotrophin Hormones and Expression of Genes in the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Ovary (HPG) Axis in Laying Yangzhou Geese

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from gram-negative bacteria was found to be involved in the decrease in laying performance in goose flocks with high stocking density during summer months. LPS injection delayed the increase in the laying rate and altered hierarchical follicle morphology. While there is evidence that LPS exerts suppressive effects on goose reproduction, the time course effects of LPS on the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary (HPG) axis remain elusive. In this study, we investigated the expression of genes in the HPG axis and the plasma gonadotrophin hormone concentrations in breeding geese at 0, 6, 12, 24, and 36 h after intravenous injection with LPS. The results showed that LPS treatment enhanced and suppressed expression of hypothalamic gonadotropin-inhibiting hormone (GnIH) and gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) mRNA, respectively, and similar effects were observed on the mRNA expression of their receptors, GnIHR and GnRHR, in the pituitary. LPS treatment transiently increased follicle FSHβ mRNA expression at 12 h and exerted no significant effect on LHβ mRNA expression in the pituitary. Regardless of the expression of FSHβ and LHβ, plasma follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were significantly increased during 24–36 h after LPS treatment. In the ovary, StAR and Cyp11a1 were mainly expressed in the granulosa layer (GL) of hierarchical follicles, while Cyp17a1 and Cyp19a1 were mainly expressed in white follicles (WFs) and yellowish follicles (YFs), and to a lesser extent in the theca layer (TL). After LPS treatment, the mRNA levels of Cyp11a1 in the GLs, Cyp17a1 in the WFs and TL, and Cyp19a1 in the WFs, YFs, and TL were significantly decreased. However, LPS treatment transiently upregulated StAR expression at 12 h. These results indicate that the exposure of laying geese to LPS may impair the HPG axis and disturb ovarian steroidogenesis. Our research provides new insights into reproductive dysfunction caused by LPS and the immune challenge in birds. Full article

Objectives: To evaluate a policy-based intervention to increase seasonal-influenza-vaccination coverage in healthcare workers in Xining, a city in Western China. Methods: From October 2018 to March 2019, we implemented a free vaccination policy in healthcare workers in Xining. A face-to-face interview with the head of the infection control department and an online survey for medical staff in four tertiary medical facilities was conducted to understand both the implementation of the free policy and influenza vaccination coverage. Possible factors for influenza vaccination among healthcare workers (physician, nurses working on the front-line, HCWs) were investigated by multivariate-logistic regression. Results: Coverage in two hospitals that implemented the free vaccination policy was 30.5% and 25.9%, respectively, which was statistically different to hospitals that did not implement the free policy (7.2% and 8.7%, respectively) (χ2 = 332.56, p < 0.0001). Among vaccinated healthcare workers, 65.5% and 48.6% reported their main reasons for vaccination were a convenient vaccination service and awareness of the free vaccination policy. The reasons for not being vaccinated among the 3389 unvaccinated healthcare workers included: the inconvenient vaccination service (33.8%), believing vaccination was unnecessary (29.7%), concerns about adverse reactions to the vaccine (28.8%), and having to pay for the vaccine (25.6%). Conclusions: Implementing the free vaccination policy, combined with improving the accessibility of the vaccination service, increased seasonal-influenza vaccination-coverage in healthcare workers in Xining.
